From the EDITOR

It’s 2021 and – my goodness – I’m very glad it is. After a year fraught with adversity and fear it is with enormous relief that I can bring to you an editor’s letter filled with hope and expectation.

Now we have a vaccine life can and will get better. Yes, much uncertainty still remains – with Brexit’s ultimate outcome unsure at the time of writing and the enormously tricky vaccine roll-out still ahead – however, you find me in jubilant mood. We’ve all learned so much about what it is that matters most in life, learned firsthand how it is through togetherness that we endure the toughest times. A cheerful, simple and, of course, responsible Christmas - which was way better than I’d expected - again reminds me of how the smallest things deliver the biggest pay-off. Who knows, we may one day soon be able to enjoy a holiday, or two, in due course. I know I’m aching for one. But now is the time for some muchdeserved routine and contentment, never before have so many of us been so deserving of it. So here it begins for you, with Wolverhampton West’s friendly amble through your local neighbourhood. If 2020 taught nothing else, it’s that we need to look after it – and each other. We want to thank our advertisers for supporting the magazine throughout this difficult time. Without them we would not be publishing and delivering a magazine through your door. Just as importantly, a big thank you to you, the readers, for using the reputable advertisers 06

we feature inside these pages. More than ever before everything ‘local’ is important – as Nick and Royston, from celebrity hairdressers Royston Blythe, make abundantly clear in their forthcoming article.

Running with the theme of keeping things closer to home is our special feature on kitchens. Often considered the hub of the home, it seems that the once cluttered and cramped room that everyone tried to escape from after a messy cook-off, is today more designer than ever before. In a wider context too, never before have our homes taken on such significance

in our lives, so if you’re still deciding what to do, we have plenty of ideas and services which you’ll find useful, both inside the house and out. And if you are on the cusp of moving out, you’ll find just what you’re looking for inside this edition, whether it be advice on equity release or a very real, home from home… Willows Care Home. Seeing how staff kept residents cheerful and safe throughout their toughest ever year is quite remarkable, as are the countless stories of innovative fundraising and the general commitment to helping others that course through our many articles – which include Paycare and Willows Dental. And, of course, the local charities – like Promise Dreams and the Rotary Club – who offer so much selflessness and can-do spirit. For moving of another kind, see Berriman Eaton’s shockingly successful annual review – even

our prognosticating columnist Nick Berriman didn’t see 2020 coming!

With so much being so different right now you may have thought I’d forgotten that a new year traditionally begins with a ‘health push’. In fact, many of you couch potatoes may well have breathed a sigh of relief, but – watch out – here it comes. We’ve got loads about exercise - gyms, individual personal training, tennis, golf – new hairstyles, dieting – it’s Veganuary, don’t you know? –, skincare advice from Deborah Mitchell’s Heaven and other generic goodies guaranteed to ease what ails you after the excess of Christmas. Not yet ready to get your head in gear? Then read on about newlylaunched business, From Our Kitchen; the food experts who guarantee your stomach a good time. And remember not to scrimp on a good night’s sleep too: see Dreamland for beds and more. Now let the routine continue with even more normality (told you it was the year for it) with a gentle mention of Valentine’s Day and Rudell the jewellers – see our big splash about the new Patek Philippe in-store experience – and Henns. Side note: both jewellers exist for all other occasions too, not just February 14th. And then it’s time to round things off with nothing less than 15 pages featuring some of, if not all of, the best schools and nurseries in the local area. And there we have it: job done. All that’s left is to wish every one of you a heartfelt, happy and healthy New Year!

Keep warm this winter with underfloor heating about making your home a warm sanctuary from the outside world.

K

eep warm this winter with an underfloor heating system in your home: the modern way to heat your home from the ground up with a warm gentle heat that will be evenly distributed throughout the room. Hotspots and therefore cooler areas are often created with conventional central heating systems, this is not the case with an underfloor heating system where a real cosy feel throughout the room is guaranteed. The temperature is dropping making now the ideal time to think

08

At Tile Choice we have a large range of underfloor heating systems available offering you affordability and excellent long-term product satisfaction. We supply systems from Warmup, the industry-leading and best-selling manufacturer of underfloor heating systems, with also an alternative lower cost brand, Superheat, available. Catering for a range of budgets and applications means you can find the perfect underfloor heating system for your home here at Tile Choice. Recent years have seen an increase in the types of underfloor heating systems available meaning they are now suitable for installation under a number of different flooring bases including both hard and soft flooring options. The versatility in types of system available mean you can install underfloor heating throughout

the home with kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms, bedrooms etc all benefiting from the beautifully gentle heat created, ensuring you have warm toes even in the coldest of days. We believe an underfloor heating system is the perfect addition to a tiled floor. The heat radiates across the tiles giving a beautifully warm feeling underfoot and ensuring the home feels cosy all year round. This in addition to the existing benefits of a tiled floor such as long-term durability and ease of maintenance makes a tiled floor the ultimate choice for luxurious style within the home. Underfloor heating systems have often been seen as a luxury reserved for high end establishments, however the affordability of the modern system makes them an option for all homes, adding a touch of luxury without breaking the bank. wolverhampton west magazine

Update your lighting

During the dark days and long nights of winter we rely on artificial lighting for both function and a sense of comfort and vitality. Now’s the time to assess what works in your home and plan any necessary improvements.

Plan lighting as early as Possible A good time to upgrade lighting is when redecorating, especially if replastering. Consider adding wall lights above the living room seating in the living room for greater flexibility or mounted either side of a bed to free up bedside table space. Other options are a row of lights over the dining table, a picture light above a painting or photograph, or spotlights above your home-office desk.

light in layers ‘Layer’ lighting from several different sources and directions for both practicality and aesthetics. Professionals think of four types of lighting: general, task, accent and atmosphere, and you can mix several types in each room using a combination of ceiling lights and pendants, wall washers, floor or table lamps, and special shelf or picture lights.

It is easy to introduce flexibility using floor and table lamps for better illumination at mid and higher levels around the room.

get the best bulbs Choose modern LED energysaving bulbs – although expensive initially, they are cheap to run and should last for years. For a warm, welcoming light, look for bulbs marked around 2,700K. For brightness, consider lumens (lm) rather than wattage – use around 470lm as the equivalent to a 40w bulb, or around 800lm for a 60w bulb. Note that dimmer switches make all lighting schemes more versatile but it can be trickier to dim LEDs, so consult your electrician if you’re unsure.

energy efficiency of LED means that cordless, battery-powered lights can be placed almost anywhere. Meanwhile, ‘smart’ lights that wake you up, turn on as you walk into a room or change colour in time to your music are pretty standard now, and can be controlled via an app, a remote control or even voice commands. Futuristic innovations include lighting that supports bio-rhythms via adjustable light levels and light panels that look like skylights to bring ‘daylight’ into windowless areas. What else will new technology bring? One thing’s for sure: the future’s bright. ONE cordless LED table lamp in gold

A Passion

for House Plants Create a beautiful indoor garden in any room. House plants look amazing, adding colour, pattern, texture, interesting forms and a feeling of vibrancy. They can fill a dull corner, provide soft screening and help dampen noise. The Royal Horticultural Society reports that indoor plants have been shown to lower blood pressure and reduce fatigue and headache. Intriguingly, patients in hospital rooms containing plants report decreased post-operative pain. The psychological benefits include the satisfaction of nurturing a small seedling to a healthy, mature plant, as well as the pleasure of watering, misting and pruning, while the RHS says that house plants have been shown to reduce stress levels, improve mood, increase productivity and potentially lengthen attention span. Plants make us feel good.

What plants to choose? Select plants suited to homes, where it is shadier and temperature fluctuations are

greater than in their normal habitat. Good examples include the spider plant, the Boston fern, several varieties of dracaena, Sansevieria trifasciata, rubber plants (ficus elastica), peace lilies (spathiphyllum), aspidistra and ivy. Succulents and cacti tend to be relatively easy to care for and come in a range of shapes and sizes. For fashion followers, the most-discussed plants on Reddit in 2020 included the pothos, monstera, philodendron, calathea, hoya and peperomia. On the other hand, the world’s most Instagrammed houseplants include the Swiss cheese plant (monstera deliciosa), fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata), Chinese money plant, snake plant and money tree.

Where to put your house plants Generally plants need good light (but not bright, direct sunlight) and should be away from heat sources, draughts and cold. Darker rooms like bathrooms need shade-tolerant plants. Provide a stable, waterproof base, and keep harmful plants away from children and pets. Huge statement plants look incredible in hallways, living rooms or dining room corners, or group several plants together for a similar effect. Place

smaller plants on tables or use tall planters, or put a row of small plants on a mantelpiece, shelf or window ledge, or dot them among books and vases in a bookcase. Hang them from the ceiling, stage them in steps, or pop them on wall racks. Grouping in odd numbers looks best, and a range of widths and heights looks relaxed. Opt for varying shades of leaf colours or try a more regulated appearance, and contrast leaf shapes for natural variety.

What’s on trend for 2021? Whatever your style - whether you’re after a sleek, clutter-free family bathroom or a splash of hotel chic, if you’re planning to refresh your bathroom, Carvers has got it covered! From statement baths to spacesaving storage, Carvers is on hand with a host of inspiration! Refreshing a bathroom doesn’t always require a total overhaul, it can be as simple as swapping the basin, changing the taps or even looking at some new lighting. With 2020 behind us, we take a look forward to the exciting new bathroom trends that await us in 2021!

Pastel colours

While vibrant colours were previously in vogue for making a statement, pastels and dusky tones have quickly gained momentum for creating a soft and inviting touch to bathrooms. Add pastels to your colour palette quickly and easily through your choice of tiles or wall colours.

Black Accents

The industrial theme has been popular for a while and is set to continue into 2021. The trend for thin, black metal frames, especially when used to frame glass, plus black taps and accessories, help deliver genuine urban appeal with a softer edge.

Spa like Sanctuaries

From scented candles and aromas to wooden accessories and natural plants, there is a host of ways to create your very own spa

retreat at home to destress and unwind. Choosing calm and neutral colours is a great way to bring a sense of zen into your bathroom and create your own oasis.

Muted tones

The most popular choice of bathroom colours are the neutrals, whites and greys, however for 2021 we will see more introduction of muted tones, such as sage green, dusty rose, beige and stone. These colourful accents can be incorporated through furniture, statement walls and accessories. Whatever option you choose, it’s often the accessories and other all-important finishing touches that really bring the dream to life.

Black accents have real kerb appeal and are set to be a popular trend for 2021

Flooring, paint and lighting solutions, which all add unique touches to your bathroom project, are all available from Carvers, along with the Tile Choice showroom for floor and wall tiles, Dixons for all your decorating needs and Rayton Electrical for all your lighting solutions. AL1251 Carasara Chandelier

Chandeliers are the traditional light fitting for a bedroom, whether it be simple or extravagant the fitting is a focal point of the room. If you want to bring a classic look to your room, simply use chandeliers. They offer a touch that other lights do not. They can either be modern, crystal or sleek. Just match your chandelier with existing décor of your room and you’re done.

Pendant Lights

1184003 Astro Pendant

The new trend with bedroom ceiling lights is to have hanging pendant lights over your bedside cabinets rather than table lamps or wall lights. Most individuals are opting for this trend and finishing the look off by accompanying the bedside pendant lights with a matching pendant in the centre of the bedroom.

Flush Mounts and SemiFlush Mount Lights Want to create a cosy feel in your bedroom, then flush and semi-flush ceiling lights are perfect for small rooms with low ceilings. Apart from brightening up and decorating your space, they make it functional.

Pargeters Furniture New Year: New Furniture Styles “Sometimes an established business and single store furniture shop can be deemed to be more expensive to buy from than larger group stores. “But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop at Pargeters, very often we are cheaper and will price-match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible prices combined with the highest standard of customer service.” Unlike their competitors, the staff at Pargeters aren’t on commission, which means their focus is entirely on helping you make the purchase that’s right for you – if, of course, you decide to buy from the company.

I

s the New Year calling for you to update, improve or redesign your home interior? If so, you’ll be keen to find a selection of quality and contemporary furniture to complete the new look at Pargeters. With over three floors, packed with modern designs from leading British brands, there will be plenty to suit every home interior style. The family-run store has recently undertaken a route in specialist upholstery, meaning the business itself no longer sells bedroom furniture, curtains and beds. As a result, there is a brand-new department that specialises in Sherborne lift and rise beds, reclining chairs - which are all exempt from VAT - as well as sofas to match.

“We don’t sell ‘add-ons’ – like finance or insurance, which some companies use to boost their profits.” The company even offers FREE DELIVERY within a 50-mile radius and will also take your old items away free of charge. So, whatever you’ve got in mind for your home interior this new year, Pargeters will be able to help you on your way to a fantastic new style! You can also rest assured that your safety is our top priority during COVID-19, with vigilant protective measures and clear, outlined guidelines to customers and staff.

With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit. In fact, customers at Pargeters are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains:

PARGETERS SOCIAL DISTANCING MEASURES We are offering customers the opportunity to shop safely on their own or with family members. The showroom will be limiting customers at any one time. The current social distancing guidelines will be adhered to at all times. Staff will be available to assist you and answer any questions while following the current guidelines. Personal Protective Equipment will be used in the showroom by all staff. If you wish to book an appointment please call 01384 394176 to book your preferred time at the showroom between the hours of 9am and 4pm Monday to Saturday. BLACK COUNTRY

THE

by Rob Taylor

It’s always a challenge to write about something when no-one can agree upon not only where it is but, to some extent, what it is as well. Although undoubtedly in the middle of England, the Black Country is just such a topic. It is a region so richly unique that it still promotes fierce debate even to this day about not only where exactly it got its name from but where exactly it begins and ends.

DUDLEY CASTLE

BLACK COUNTRY LIVING MUSEUM

And when the government did step in to officially define the region, it only made things worse. Today the Black Country is described, by the government, as being most of the four Metropolitan District Council areas of Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton. Many will agree that the term ‘Black Country’ is most often used as a marketing tool to help sell and promote the West Midlands to the rest of the country. However, the true reality of the region is that it has no borders and is instead defined by people, dialect, geology, culture and industry. It is easy to see why so many have struggled to grasp something so nebulous, especially when its name is most likely very literal: likely 50

arriving in the mid-nineteenth century, it derives from the black smoke that was released by the many thousands of ironworking foundries and forges in the area. Charles Dickens wrote in his 1841 novel The Old Curiosity Shop that the area’s factories “poured out their plague of smoke, obscured the light, and made foul the melancholy air.” JRR Tolkien - who was brought up in the West Midlands and no doubt mined here for inspiration for the fictional Mordor, which means ‘black land’, for his Lord

of the Rings trilogy - referred often to the intensity of manufacturing in the Black Country and its effect on the landscape and its people. And so what is – roughly – the geographical area in question? Arguably it encompasses the area where the relatively shallow, 30ft thick ‘South Staffordshire’ coal seam comes to HIMLEY HALL

DUNCAN EDWARDS

TITANIC ANCHOR

the surface – and so pertains to West Bromwich, Oldbury, Blackheath, Cradley Heath, Old Hill, Bilston, Dudley, Tipton, Wednesfield and parts of Halesowen, Wednesbury and Walsall. Said to be the thickest layer of coal in Britain, it makes the soil in these places quite black. Baggeridge Colliery, near Sedgley, was said to mark the most northern edge, where the coal seam reached the surface. It was the last remaining pit in the Black Country until it closed in 1968. Dudley is generally regarded as the “capital” of the Black Country, and so some say that the Black Country is anywhere within a five-mile radius of Dudley Castle, but this is far too neat and simple a solution. It’s far easier to list famous people from the area: they include Lenny Henry, Beverley Knight, Noddy Holder, Julie Walters and Robert Plant. The Black Country is described by history as a grim place, with dirty,

soot-coated buildings and filthy streams with no fish; a lack of trees and few birds. TS Eliot’s poem, The Wasteland, probably didn’t sell well in these parts; the region was for many decades a blackened wilderness, scarred by spoil heaps and smoking furnaces. Even before the Industrial Revolution, the area was known for its industry based on the local coal and iron ore. Local weapons maker Dud Dudley was one of the first people to use coal to smelt iron ore. In 1862, Elihu Burritt, the American consul in Birmingham, gave inspiration for what today adorns the region’s flag, when he said the region was “black by day and red by night”. As for the chains on the flag… well, Netherton did manufacture anchors and chains for the Titanic. With so much history coursing through the region it’s no wonder Black Country folk are keen to retain their local identity and dialect and distinguish themselves

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

from Birmingham. And so am I, because on many occasions, whenever I’ve been in London, I’ve been referred to as a “Peaky Blinder”. And – since I hail from Wolverhampton - I certainly do not belong to the Birmingham tribe who refer to Black Country people as “Yam Yams”, because they often say ‘yow am’ or ‘yow’m’ instead of ‘you are.’ However, I’ve since learned that according to traditional definitions Wolverhampton, Stourbridge and Smethwick do not belong in the Black Country, so where does this leave me – and indeed many of you readers? Deep in an identity crisis, I suppose…

Imagine... …no money worries… …enough financial security for a happy and fulfilled retirement… …the holiday of a lifetime... …being able to help your children buy their first house… …that new kitchen, bathroom or extension… …a forever home that’s just how you’ve always wanted it… All of these things could be achievable with an Equity Release mortgage with the help of Legacy Financial Services

E

quity release mortgages are not just for the elderly...accessibility to these products starts from just 55 years of age! It’s a great product that can help to ease the financial stresses of later life. You can use the equity tied up in your home and take a cash amount to suit your needs without having to sell your property and without facing the upheaval of moving into a smaller property. It’s become a popular way for homeowners to release the funds needed to have a worry-free retirement. Alternatively, you could opt to use the money for repaying debts such as an Interest Only mortgage, maybe you want to help your children get on the property ladder, help to fund home improvements such as a new kitchen or conservatory, or simply enjoy your retirement... just imagine that Caribbean cruise,

the road trip around America or that once-in-a-lifetime trip to Australia or New Zealand! Mr E, aged 60, from Wolverhampton, has done just that and has recently taken advantage of an equity release product to help him modernise, renovate and future-proof his house. He has no children and lives on his own but with the maintenance and upkeep of the property getting too much for him financially, he decided the time was right to make the equity in his property work for him. Why be asset rich and cash poor and struggle to fund the jobs you need doing when you’re, metaphorically speaking, sitting on all that equity? He’s taken a modest £25000 from his property at a rate of just 2.43% with a very well-known financial institution...that’s an amazing deal and nowhere near as expensive as people think it would be!!! He’s already appointed a builder to knock down and rebuild his old

leaking garage; the plasterer has given him a quote for re-plastering the kitchen and utility; the decorator has been around to price up for redecoration throughout; he’s had three quotes for new windows and a porch, and chosen the company he wants to use; and, the block paving on his driveway is being cleaned, repaired and extended to cover the whole of his frontage. None of these jobs would have been possible if he hadn’t taken out an equity release mortgage... his income and age precluded him from getting a conventional mortgage; a low income also meant his affordability was insufficient for a personal loan and his savings simply did not stretch to cover all of the jobs he wanted to do. Once all of the work is completed, he’ll have a home he can, once again, be proud of and be happy in the knowledge that he is on top of the maintenance and upkeep of his property, and the best news is, as he gets older, if he requires additional funds to do other jobs at a later date, he can have a

“drawdown” facility that allows him access to future funds, albeit at the going rate at that time. So, for Mr E. this was a fantastic way of achieving what he wanted. Imagine how this could work for you...refurbish, redecorate, extend or modernise your home... give your children some of the inheritance that they will ultimately receive, at a time that benefits them and you get to see the happiness that could bring, book that holiday of a lifetime and enjoy the benefits of 1st class travel and accommodation, pay off all of those debts that may keep you awake at night, imagine not having the worry of paying off the Interest Only mortgage, especially when you thought your only option was to sell the family home. Legacy Financial Services is an appointed representative of PRIMIS Mortgage Network, one of the largest mortgage networks in the country with an exemplary track record for advising clients. As with everything in life, if you’re amongst the best you have more opportunities and choice. This works for our clients too, in that we can offer clients lots of options and choice in terms of lender, products and rates.

We help you choose which product is right for your circumstances whether that is a lifetime mortgage or a home reversion plan. You can choose to release a single lump sum or decide to take separate smaller amounts as and when you need to. You can choose to make repayments if you want to (this would mean a larger inheritance for your children) but if you decide not to, well that’s acceptable too and the interest is simply “rolled-up” and becomes payable upon your death or if you vacate the property to move into a care home, for example. Legacy Financial Services is a member of the Equity Release Council and this membership offers you, as a client, security in knowing that we must follow a strict code of conduct. Clients have a “No Negative Equity Guarantee” meaning that you’ll never owe more than your house is worth and you also have the right to live in your home for life or until you move into permanent care. It’s always best to discuss your situation and circumstances with a qualified advisor to see what the right course of action is for you. If you require more information please call Legacy Financial Services and speak to the local advisor for

the Midlands, Karl Smith, who will be happy to discuss your requirements and arrange a home visit to assess your circumstances and explain your choices and the options available to you. If you don’t think you’re at that stage just yet and if you’re merely seeking some initial information, feel free to call us for an informal chat. We also offer help with other later life planning needs such as Wills, Lasting Power of Attorney, Property Trusts and Funeral Planning.

Club of The City of Wolverhampton

Joint action to repair the damage from Covid-19 The morning of 23rd March brought with it a new experience for everyone - lockdown. In defence against the global Coronavirus pandemic, a strict regime was introduced to curb the spread of infection. Shops were closed, except for those selling essentials and supermarket shelves were quickly stripped of those essentials. Pubs, clubs and restaurants were closed. Hairdressers put away their scissors and tattooists their needles. Theatres and

cinemas brought down the curtain, as other social gatherings were cancelled. Sport was abandoned, while an hour of exercise became almost mandatory. City centres were deserted - in all, the nation virtually ground to a halt. The elderly were classified as “vulnerable”, while others were “shielded”. We were urged to cover our faces and to work at home wherever possible. “Stay at home - wash your hands - protect the NHS” became the universal credo. The impact of all of this on many aspects of everyday life has been profound and amongst those to suffer were voluntary and charitable organisations. Many smaller groups not only found their income disappearing, but also lost volunteer helpers, who were shielded or vulnerable and were confined to their homes. Just to compound the difficulties, many organisations were engaged in activities where demand for their help was greater than normal, precisely because of the impact of the pandemic. In a normal year the Rotary Club of The City of Wolverhampton raises and distributes £50,000, but two of its major fund-raising events fell victim to the restrictions and could not take place, dramatically reducing the available funds. Club President, Brian Bailey, observes: “It has been a matter of concern to us that this year our ability to support organisations which play such a vital role within our community is severely reduced. Even worse, this is at a time when events have conspired to make the demands upon these groups even greater. In these challenging circumstances we are delighted to be able to introduce a Small Grants Scheme, which we hope will go some way to making good some of the damage. The scheme has been developed in conjunction with the James Beattie Charitable Trust, whose involvement has been very significant, and to whom we are very much indebted”. The Small Grants Scheme will make financial help available to local groups in order to provide much needed support to sustain their work, which has a vital place in community life in the city. Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise groups, working in local communities to help people of all ages to overcome problems arising from deprivation, poverty, disability and lack of opportunity, will be able to apply for grants of between £250 and £750. Full information on eligibility and the factors which will be considered in awarding grants can be obtained from on the Club’s website www.rotaryclubwolverhampton.co.uk, and applications can be lodged from 20th January onwards. The closing date for completed applications will be 10th March.

dental

We at Willows Dental love nothing more than being able to help others and we strive to do this in many ways. One of them is working closely with the Tettenhall Round Table. The Tettenhall Table is an association which both Neel and the Willows Dental team have been honoured to support over many years. The Round Table established in 1956 and has been a source of both fellowship and fundraising ever since. Membership to the association is open to all men between the ages of 18 and 45 in the both UK and Ireland. They provide their members with a selection of social and community service related opportunities and projects. The objectives of the association are the encouragement of high ethical standards in commercial life, the promotion of fellowship amongst young professional and business men, and to “empower each individual to make a positive impact at home, work and in his community”. But more than that, and most importantly, they raise considerable funds for local charities and causes each year. The social aspect of round table is very important as they undertake local activities such as Go Karting, Axe Throwing and even tried Medieval Combat! Social

bonding and mutual support of members is an important ethos. Every year the Round Table takes an international trip with their members and have been to some of the most beautiful and cultural cities in the world such as Milan, Riga, Madrid and even Chernobyl. Overall the Round Table is about having fun, making new friends and trying something new all for good causes. The Tettenhall Round Table raises their funds to give to local charities by running and participating in long standing events such as the Tettenhall Town Fete, Santa Sleigh runs and also annually hosting a field next to the Cosford Air Show. The funds generated have helped support many local charities such as New Cross Hospital. The Table have also heavily contributed to acquiring multiple defibrillators for Compton, Tettenhall & Tettenhall Wood as well helping to replace a stolen unit in Kingswinford. It is lovely to be able to help fund these projects which give so much benefit to the community. Neel has been a member of the Table for a number of years and will continue to be an important part of its organisation. Neel has run stalls at the local fete as well as promoting the Annual Ball. In 2020 during the COVID pandemic Willows Dental itself helped as much as it could by donating hundreds of Dental Care Packs to those in need, both staff and patients at New Cross Hospital, trying to support those on the front line through difficult times. We at the Willows are all about having fun, but most importantly about giving back to families in the local area and helping where we can. It’s been a tough year and we enjoy supporting local organisations and innovative projects within our community.

TEAMWORK

makes the dream work Black Country Firewood would like to wish all of their customers a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Well, what a year 2020 has been! If there is one lesson to be learnt this year it’s the importance of team work. All of our team have worked incredibly hard to meet demand as well as abiding by the ever-changing Covid -19 guidelines.

Black Country Firewood Dream Team

Dan joined the team in January 2019, initially to help with the completion of the purpose-built firewood shed but has been here ever since. In between firewood deliveries, he manages and services all of the plant, machinery and vehicles so that everything runs smoothly. Paul and George, who started work at Black Country Firewood in Autumn 2019, at this time of year are based predominately in the Firewood Centre. Despite a slight age gap, Paul an ex-serviceman and George who will be turning 18 next year, both work like two well oiled cogs! Their roles involve preparing deliveries, production of kindling and serving customers who have placed orders through our click and collect service. They also keep the place clean and tidy which keeps the rest of us in check!

In November, Ed joined the team as a relief delivery driver so we now have three trucks delivering, six days a week. This additional driver has allowed us to extend our delivery radius to areas such as Bourneville, Walsall, and Quinton. An extra pair of hands has also meant that Rich can concentrate on answering the phone, organising deliveries (which is a lot easier said than done!), and answering any customer enquiries. We pride ourselves on being able to deliver to the majority of our customers within 2-3 days. This year, Rich celebrates his 10th year with us. Anything he doesn’t know about firewood isn’t worth knowing!

Promise Dreams

Christmas Bauble Campaign Just like many organisations Promise Dreams has seriously been affected by the coronavirus. Charity trustee Suresh Bawa said: “We are now open a few hours a week and are desperately trying to raise funds for our beautiful children. “With no possibility of any fundraising activity in the near future, in November we launched our Christmas Bauble campaign and with the help of The Mount Hotel, Tettenhall and the generosity of our supporters managed to raise an amazing £5,500. “In return for a minimum donation of £10, messages went on our special tree for everyone to see in time for Christmas. “The money raised helped 5 beautiful children and their families realise their dream and we cannot thank you enough. “One family needed our help really quickly as, sadly mom has just been diagnosed with a terminal illness also! They just wanted to go to Centre Parcs to have some quality time together, while they still could and thanks to the generosity of our amazing supporter Dan Gellini, whose son Max we helped a few years ago, they will get their dream. “We know everyone is struggling in these strange times, and are not certain of our future. “2021 still holds a degree of uncertainty for our charity.

Mount Hotel MD Scott Bernard with Promise Dreams trustee Suresh Bawa

Our fundraising activity has taken a stall due to the fact we can no longer have any public gatherings, in 2020 we lost over eight events that we would normally hold. Our fundraising total is down by over 80%. “It’s vital that we collectively carry on supporting the families UK-wide. “So, we do what we can and we ask businesses and individuals to help us in any way that they can.

“We celebrate 21 years in 2021 for promise dreams, and whist 2020 was very difficult we are optimistic that we can return to our fundraising activities. “We would like to thank everyone that has supported us last year and we look forward to getting back to the new normal this year. We are always humbled by the support we receive and recognise in these tough times it means so much more.”

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU Why it’s the right time to deep clean your home Made a New Year’s resolution to eat better, or exercise more? Studies have proven that a neat and tidy home encourages these good habits. We’re not saying a ‘deep clean’ will make you go for a jog every night, but it might just help! An intensive clean should happen once a year. Moving furniture to dust behind, washing down woodwork, tops of kitchen cupboards and taking off the shower head to remove limescale. This intense maintenance should set your home up to be easier to look after daily and can even make a room look brighter. Says Charmaine Nicolson, owner of Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton, “Deep cleaning the whole house can seem a daunting undertaking, so it might be best to start with one room. Work from ceiling to floor, so nothing gets missed and work your way around the room in one direction. As well

as cleaning, use this as an opportunity to organise; a place for everything really is the way to be less stressed. Throw out rubbish, group like with like and maybe buy some simple storage solutions, like boxes for a shelf, or a drawer organiser for small items. But the effort is well worth it. None of us have been able to go away much in the last year, but treating your home to a deep clean can make it feel like a hotel, as you move from room to room.” At Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton, our trained teams of professional housekeepers can treat your whole house to a deep clean.

A New Year, A New Season

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

wrapped round tree stems, this can be kept on all year round to catch any pests climbing up the tree.

H

appy New Year to everyone, here’s hoping that 2021 is a much better year than 2020 and we can look forward to seeing everyone without restrictions. Seed potatoes usually arrive at the start of the New Year, weather permitting. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow shoots to form), egg trays are ideal for this, place them in a light, cool and frost-free environment. You can start seed potatoes growing in pots inside as early as you like, so long as they are protected from any frosts we may have. If you haven’t used winter wash on your fruit trees yet, do so on a mild day before the buds start to burst, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees. Make sure you have a grease band

If the weathers fine and frost free, get out into the garden to finish any clearing up jobs that weren’t done at the end of 2020, especially tidying up leaves and debris. This will help to prevent disease from spreading and removes hiding places for slugs and snails. If the snow and hard frosts do arrive make sure vulnerable plants – Hebe, Phormium, Cordyline, Palms and Tree Ferns are covered with fleece. Remember to make sure outdoor taps are lagged and covered over in the winter to prevent any cracking and leaks caused by freezing. Whilst you have very little in your greenhouse, January and February are the ideal times to turn it out, wash it down and disinfect it. Only wash glass down on a mild day to avoid cracking cold panes of glass. Having a clean greenhouse at the beginning of the season ensures that seeds and plants get off to a good start. If you want to start something off early in the greenhouse try sowing some sweet pea seeds in a cool environment. Use a seed compost and sow them into peat pots, 2 to 3 seeds per pot. When they’re ready for planting out the roots will have grown through the pot and it’s then very easy to just pop the plant into the ground or a container. Plug plants will be available around the beginning of March, but they will need heat to start with. Grow them in the house to get a head start, but remember you need to take note of the weather conditions and not be in a rush to put tender plants out before May time.

Don’t forget our feathered friends, especially if the weather is poor – we’ve always got peanuts, seed, mealworms, fat balls and feeders in stock. Clean off bird tables regularly and remember to put out fresh water daily. 72

PAYCARE IN THE COMMUNITY

january/ february 2021

KEEP THE COMMuNITY SuPPORT GOING

SAYS PAYCARE TEAM Carry on supporting the community where you can – that was the message from Paycare as the team looked back over the past year. While 2020 has proved difficult in terms of volunteering, they are hoping to keep community spirit alive and well as we enter the new year.

CEO Kevin Rogers said: “Giving back to the community is at the heart of everything we do at Paycare, and while volunteering has been tricky with the Covid-19 restrictions in place for much of the year, we have done our best to help out where we can. We have continued supporting causes we had existing links with, and reached out to other charities who were particularly in need of help during the pandemic.” The team wore purple for International Women’s Day (just before the first lockdown) in aid of The Haven – as well as continuing

their sponsorship of the charity’s domestic abuse live chat.

They fought to reduce period poverty by distributing sanitary products intended for the Molineux toilets to local charities while the stadium was closed to fans, donated food parcels to organisations such as The Good Shepherd, won the Beacon Centre’s Corporate Volunteer of the Year Award, and launched a public vote to share out £3,000 between three exceptionally deserving charities. Paycare has continued its sponsorship of various community and professional sports teams, including Motherwell FC, Bilston Town Football Club kit, and Darlaston Town (1874) FC. And they also supported good causes over Christmas with donations to food banks and charities, sponsorship of five hampers sent by Nant Ltd

to their care home customers, and sponsorship of a day in the Compton Care Advent Calendar. Kevin added: “I’d love to remind everyone that it’s not just about giving money – supporting the community can be something as simple as supporting a small local business, doing some shopping for an elderly neighbour, phoning vulnerable residents for a chat, or offering whatever skills you have – for example if you have business experience that might be useful to a charity. “A huge thank you to our Policyholders, Partners and of course the Paycare team for their unwavering support of our community work – we are hoping restrictions will ease in 2021 and we can get back out there and continue giving our time to the causes dear to our hearts.”

CO-WORKING SPACE SET TO LAuNCH

IN WOLVERHAMPTON A co-working space for small businesses and freelancers is set to launch in Wolverhampton in the new year.

Wolverhampton Cricket Club is offering office and meeting rooms at its Tettenhall base after joining forces with The Wheelhouse – an innovative team already running multiple locations across the country. There will be 14 desk spaces and 2 meeting rooms – all compliant with current Covid restrictions available to book by members who sign up to join The Wheelhouse. The project has been part-funded by Paycare – who have sponsored the club for the past two years – in order to benefit the many employees unable to use their normal working locations, as well as start-ups looking for an affordable space to work and network with other companies in the region. Mike Elphick, Chairman of Wolverhampton Cricket Club, said with experience of running a Covidsafe environment during the summer cricket season and limited uses mid-week, the club was the ideal venue to host the new space. “It’s ideal for those living nearby who don’t want to travel into Birmingham or other locations anymore – they can simply come to Tettenhall, reduce their commute time and park for free. It’s a unique business venue and of course there’s lot of outdoor space which people can enjoy on their breaks too.” Alex Lloyd Davies, Managing Director of The Wheelhouse, said they wanted to help small

businesses, freelancers and entrepreneurs flourish. “We do this by providing local, friendly coworking and meeting rooms around the UK, often in partnership with community groups. So, we are thrilled to be partnering with Wolverhampton Cricket Club.” Paycare CEO Kevin Rogers added: “There are lots of people who have now been working from home since last March, and we know the toll this can take on their wellbeing. Being able to network with and chat to others – from a safe distance of course – can have such a positive impact on your working day, and that’s why we are thrilled to support the co-working space at the Cricket Club. “For many, that distinction between work and family life which working from a location outside of their own home can bring will make a real difference. Packing your bag at the end of the working day and travelling home acts as a real marker, hopefully enabling those who make use of the co-working desks to feel present at home with their loved ones and enjoy some welldeserved downtime in the evenings and at weekends. There is also, of course, the positive environmental impact if more people are working closer to where they live, minimising the miles they drive each day.” To find out more, arrange a look around or for a free trial day, simply email: hello@thewheelhouses.com or call 01902 902310.

How to take part

IN Veganuary

this year Founded in 2014, Veganuary is an initiative that encourages people across the world to try veganism in January. Here, we look at the reasons to take part and how to survive a month – or more – without meat and dairy.

V

eganism has ballooned in recent years, with a record 400,000 people signing up to the Veganuary movement in 2020. Documentaries like ‘What the Health’, ‘Cowspiracy’ and David Attenborough’s ‘A Life on Our Planet’ have helped drive the trend, all of which shed light on the benefits of a vegan diet for our health and for the planet.

What is veganism and why should you try it? A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, eggs and even honey in favour of plants and plant-based products. In short, a vegan lifestyle is one that tries, as much as possible, to exist without harming animals. The benefits of adopting a more plant-based diet are numerous. David Attenborough said himself that our planet simply cannot sustain seven billion meat eaters, and scientists have claimed that eating large amounts of meat and dairy is linked to several health conditions too. When done correctly, it’s possible to get all the nutrients you need from a totally plant-based diet. It

can also help you lose weight and introduce you to more fruits, vegetables, seeds and grains that you wouldn’t normally incorporate into your weekly shop. Veganism may not be for everyone, but even just trying it for a month will reduce your carbon footprint and may encourage you to eat less meat and dairy in the future.

The big question: how? Supermarkets, cafes and restaurants have been filling their shelves and kitchens with tasty meat and dairy substitutes over the last couple of years, meaning finding something you like is easier than ever. Book shops and the internet are packed full of tasty recipes, and if you sign up to Veganuary you’ll receive weekly tips and recipes to keep you on track. Seitan, Quorn and tofu are fantastic substitutes for meat and can be used to create plant-based versions of your favourite dishes. They’re all easy to cook, packed with healthy plant proteins and have a very convincing meat-like texture. Supermarkets are now filled with a huge array of plantbased milks, including soy, oat, almond and coconut, and a huge variety of vegan cheeses too. Although they won’t taste exactly like the real deal, they’re close enough – and delicious in their own right! Eating out is also easier than ever, with more and more restaurants adding vegan options to their menus every year.

What about your health? Contrary to popular belief, you can get all the nutrients your body needs from eating a varied and balanced vegan diet. The only vitamin that’s difficult to find is Vitamin B-12, but thankfully many cereals, soy milks – and even Marmite – are fortified with this essential vitamin. Eat your five-a-day, pack lots of protein-rich beans and pulses into your diet, and get your calcium and iron from green, leafy vegetables and wholemeal bread. If you find it difficult to cram everything in, supplements are an option and the Veganuary website has plenty of nutrition tips for going vegan the right way.

Amazing transformations for men and women at the Hair Regrowth Clinic The team at Wolverhampton’s Hair Regrowth Clinic know all too well the negative impact thinning hair can have on your life and that’s why they’re passionate about helping their clients to do something about it. As Director, Sabrina Kaur explains:

and friends. We soon realised that we should set up our own business and so we undertook the relevant courses and training to ensure we could offer the best treatments for our clients.”

“My husband Sandesh was only 36 when he started losing his hair and he just wasn’t ready to accept going bald. So, I started researching treatments that could help.”

AN INTRODUCTORY 6 MONTH TREATMENT PACKAGE

At only £995* (*Terms and conditions apply)

We are following the current government guidelines to protect the wellbeing of clients and our staff. All clients must ensure they come with a face mask.

Sabrina found that Dermaroller - a form of microdermabrasion traditionally used on the face – can be extended to the scalp and so she began using the device at a setting of 1mm alongside a Minoxidil treatment. “Following intensive research I then discovered light therapy which I factored into the regime and the results were incredible.” Three months later Sandesh’s hair was growing back where it was previously lost. “Everyone was amazed by the results and I began treating family

From their dedicated clinic the couple have been able not only to make a difference to hair loss suffered on the scalp but also for eyebrows and beards too, which offers a fantastic alternative to microblading. “As an Optometrist my husband comes from a medical background and although I’ve always worked in the legal sector we have both qualified in the treatments we provide,” adds Sabrina.

So, don’t put up with thinning hair any longer, simply contact the experts at the clinic today to begin your own hair transformation.

New Eyewear Styling Service Taylor Biddle Opticians has launched a brandnew Eyewear Styling Service for customers at both Compton and Wombourne practices following recent training, as Eyewear Stylists, with the Eyewear Styling Academy. This individually dedicated consultation service offers a unique and bespoke styling consultation to help discover perfect eyewear to suit both optical and style needs.

Glasses are not just a functional visual aid; they are an extension of you and often the first thing people notice about you. We all have our own style when it comes to clothing and accessories, and our glasses should be included in this. We wouldn’t wear the same pair of shoes for every occasion, so why wear the same pair of glasses?

Our whole team have become experts in eyewear styling, and we are able to offer this bespoke, brand new styling consultation service to existing and new customers. Clients of all ages, gender and style preference will now be able to find their perfect and most suitable eyewear in our practices.”

Our head stylist, Hollie Goodreid, and the team have been trained in individual colour analysis, colour psychology, facial and features analysis, style personality and eyewear selection. This will enable all our clients to feel assured they are being given an unparalleled consultation service to find perfect eyewear.

Head stylist Hollie says: ”Wearing the right frame can make a huge difference to the way we feel about ourselves. Especially now, in these strange times when we are wearing a mask that covers most of our face, glasses are a way of showing our identity and style.

Director Olha Lac said: ‘’From our experience, we have often found that clients find choosing eyewear a difficult, sometimes daunting, and stressful experience. With this in mind, we have invested in a process to help clients discover and select eyewear which they not only feel comfortable in but are delighted to be wearing!

“Some of us are involved in more zoom calls where what you are wearing isn’t so noticeable, but one thing very visible are your glasses. The majority of job interviews and meetings are currently conducted via zoom, so wearing that power suit that makes you confident and professional isn’t very effective, but you can still present yourself in this way with the right frame, and one that helps make you feel your most confident.”

Eyewear Styling Consultations need be booked in advance so please contact us now! 96

2020 - what a year it was. A year most of us would prefer not to remember.

B

ut it was also a year for people to make time for the things they never used to. We saw a big surge in exercise journeys, people going for runs with their hour a day exercise allowance, or just general exploring of the great outdoors. All of which have an impact on our feet. Here at Foot Therapy we have our foot on the gas and it’s business as usual. And although our feet are probably going to be covered for the most of winter, it’s still important to

keep them in tip top condition (in preparation for those summer holidays pending!) Our 30 minute Chiropody treatment will do just that starting by soaking your feet in a warm herbal footbath to soften the nails and skin. Our Podiatrists will then cut and file the nails, remove any excess hard skin and deal with any other ailments you may have (i.e. corns). The treatment will be finished off with a lathering of cream to keep those feet feeling soft and luxurious.

They’ll also provide advice where and when required - think of it as an MOT for your feet! Whatever your concern is with your feet, whether it be from general maintenance, to verrucas, to foot pain - why not give us a call - after all, our feet do carry us through life!

ACING LOCKDOWN… WITH WOLVERHAMPTON LAWN TENNIS & SQUASH CLUB

ABILITY TO ADAPT STAY HEALTHY STAY ACTIVE STAY IN A ROUTINE Since the second lockdown here at WLTSC we have had to adapt, using social media daily to interact and keep the club community strong.

We created an online fitness Facebook page free for all members to access all the usual classes (11 + per week), all at the same times with the goal of staying in a routine. We also utilised our amazing rackets coaching team, who put together weekly videos with racket skills/challenges for our members from adults right through to TOTs tennis (Under 6’s). We have such a wide demographic at WLTSC, and we are proud to say we did our best to reach all of them on a weekly basis. In total we achieved 68 activity sessions over lockdown comprising of Tennis, Squash, Fitness, Yoga and Pilates with 17 weekly sessions.

(Online – coach introduction)

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Furthermore, introducing weekly roundup newsletters to keep communicating with our members. As well as social media support. This is

something we strive to continue, consider and implement.

MAKING THE MOST OF WORKING FROM HOME… New Member Richard McGovern: “I’ve been working from home like many others since the start of March 2020. I was beginning to get a bit fed up. So, I arranged to have a look round WLTSC. I was welcomed by Neil and the staff and straight away I could sense the great atmosphere of the club. 3 months later, each week I am playing tennis, doing several gym sessions and classes. I’d really recommend joining WLTSC. A special thanks go out to Neil, Foggy and the Energize fitness team and all the staff and members at the club for making me so welcome.”

And

breathe… Aromatherapy has been used for centuries to help people de-stress, unwind and get a better night’s sleep. (All benefits that most of us could probably do with after what 2020 threw at us!).

I

f you’re trying to focus on wellbeing this year, our simple DIY bath and body oil deserves a place on your to-do list.

Relaxing bath and body oil First off, you’re going to need a base or carrier oil, such as

By Kate Duggan

jojoba or sweet almond oil. These are suitable for all skin types, very moisturising and packed with antioxidants. Pour the carrier oil into a bottle. Ideally use an amber coloured, rather than clear, bottle. The oil will then stay fresh for longer as it’ll have greater protection from light. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil and geranium essential oil to the bottle. As a rough guide, you’ll need around fifteen drops of essential oil for each 30ml of carrier oil. Lavender and geranium are a match made in heaven. Together, they can help to promote a feeling of calm and relaxation. Ideally, leave your bath and body oil to ‘brew’ for forty-eight hours before using it. Then just add a splash of the oil to your bath, or massage it into your skin. It should keep fresh for a few months as long as you store it out of direct sunlight. If you’re making it for a gift, don’t forget

to write the ingredients and directions on a sticky label or tag.

Fragrance combinations Not keen on lavender? Other scents that promote relaxation include bergamot, nutmeg, palmarosa, ylangylang and frankincense. Or if you want an energy boost, try citrusy aromas such as grapefruit, lemon, sweet orange, lemongrass and lime, or warm, spicy ones such as cinnamon, clove and cypress. Why not experiment with a few different essential oils to see which combinations you like best? (Try the blends out in an oil burner by adding a few drops to water and lighting a candle underneath).

Comforting face mask While the following recipe from Green People doesn’t include aromatherapy oils, the fragrance from the honey and lemon is both comforting and refreshing. The mask helps to nourish and soften dry skin. It won’t keep for long, so use it as soon as you’ve made it. It should prove a welcome treat after a stressful day. Mash half a medium-sized avocado, and mix it with one tablespoon of Manuka honey and one teaspoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Massage the mixture into your face and neck. Then lie back and relax for fifteen to twenty minutes, before rinsing the mask off with warm water.

Safety tips To avoid irritation and other side effects, don’t apply undiluted essential oils directly to your skin. When you’re diluting them in oil, keep them under 3% of the total mix. Some essential oils are not recommended during pregnancy, so do check the bottle. 108

Ten things you can do today to give you peace of mind tomorrow The Covid-19 pandemic has taught all of us that we never know what’s around the corner. It has shown that lives can change in an instant and highlighted the importance of making sure we have all thought about what the future might bring and put in place appropriate measures to safeguard our assets and ensure they are passed on to the people we choose.

on your behalf if you become unable to do so yourself and can prove invaluable to people of all ages.

There are two types of LPA – one covering property and financial affairs and one covering health and welfare issues.

4.

Make a General Power of Attorney

A General Power of Attorney is a good short-term document to allow someone to act on your behalf whilst you retain your mental capacity but are otherwise incapacitated. This might be because you are shielding, caring for a loved-one in lockdown or self-isolating. It comes into effect as soon as it is signed.

Will Jones, an associate in the Wills, Probate and Lifetime Planning Team at award-winning law firm FBC Manby Bowdler in Wolverhampton, outlines ten things you can do now to give you peace of mind for the future – whatever it might bring.

112

1.

Review your current arrangements

There has never been a better time than now to check that the arrangements you have in place are still up-to-date, meet your wishes and protect your assets. If they don’t, then it’s time to update them.

2.

Make a will

A will remains the most certain way of ensuring that your estate – your assets and possessions – goes to the people you want after your death. It means that your wishes become legally binding and prevents the vast majority of disputes over your estate.

3.

Make a Lasting Power of Attorney

A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) allows you to nominate someone to make decisions

5.

Advance Decision – A living will

An Advance Decision – sometimes referred to as a Living Will – allows you to set out how you wish to be treated or cared for should you become very ill in a legally-binding document. It needs careful consideration when being drawn up to ensure it does not come into conflict with any LPA.

6.

Tax planning

We strongly advise people to get sound legal advice on tax planning and Inheritance Tax. Good legal advice can show you how to alter the structure of your will, or use lifetime tax planning processes, to allow as much of your money as possible to go where you want it to.

7.

Putting all your affairs in order

This is a good time to collate all the documentation your family may need when you are no longer with them, put in place arrangements for passing on undrawn pensions and review your investments and life insurance. Your solicitor

can talk through all of these important matters with you. 8.

Create an ICE document

This is an easy way to let your loved ones know where to find things In Case of Emergency (ICE). You can use it to tell them who your solicitor, accountant and financial advisers are and where to find important documents.

9.

Talk to your family

It’s easy to put off conversations about what might happen in the future, but they really do help everyone. Just speaking to your family about your wishes and the steps you have taken to put them into place can be immensely reassuring for everybody.

10. Get legal advice

This is far too important an area to cut corners. There may be any number of websites offering cheap wills and online deals, but you want to know that everything has been done by the book and is legally secure. Good legal advice – from respected, experienced law firms such as FBC Manby Bowdler – does just that and can ensure that your wishes are followed to the letter. What better way to enjoy real peace of mind?

For help and advice on any of these issues, Will Jones can be contacted at 01902 392404 or by email at will.jones@fbcmb.co.uk

The InadverTenT ImplIcaTIons

of a Will The recent case in the Court of Protection Re FSS –v- LMS (by her Litigation Friend, the Official Solicitor to the Senior Courts) and others [2020] EWCOP 52 highlights the need not only to have a valid Will in place but to also ensure the implications of a Will are fully considered at the outset. The case concerned a young lady aged 21 with Sotos Syndrome, a significant degree of Autism and mild learning disabilities. She attended a specialist residential college for young people with learning disabilities. In September 2019 she had capacity to execute a Lasting Power of Attorney appointing her parents as Attorneys however in July 2020 she was assessed as lacking capacity to make financial decisions. She received means tested benefits and her placement at the specialist residential college was funded by the Local Authority with the residential component also means tested. Her Grandfather passed away leaving her an inheritance of approximately £170,000.00 subject to her attaining the age of 25 years. This inheritance was not placed into a Trust for her benefit but was left to her by way of an absolute gift. As such, it meant that upon her attaining the required age of 25 years in the future, the capital inheritance would preclude her from continuing to receive her means tested benefits and assistance. An application was made under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to place the inheritance into a Disabled Persons Trust to be held by her parents for her benefit. If allowed the proposed Deed of Variation would allow her to continue to

receive means tested benefits and also allow her inheritance to be ring fenced and used separately for her benefit. The Official Solicitor disputed the proposal and contended that if the inheritance was placed into the proposed Disabled Persons Trust this would constitute a deliberate deprivation of capital under welfare legislation thus meaning she would still not be entitled to means tested benefits. The Mental Capacity Act 2005 Section 18(1)(h) specifically empowers the Court to settle property of a person who lacks capacity to do so. Although the Court of Protection did not have jurisdiction to determine whether she would be entitled to means tested benefits and funding going forward, the Court allowed the application on the basis that the proposed Deed should be authorised as it would better effect her Grandfather’s intentions that his Will would financially benefit her, only for those intentions to not be accurately reflected in the drafting of his Will. Furthermore it was concluded that it did not offend public policy to authorise a Disabled Persons Trust that had the effect of maintaining her entitlement to means tested benefits as this was not the operative purpose of the proposed Deed and was not the Court’s motive in authorising it. The Court of Protection rescued this beneficiary from the inadequate drafting of the Will. If a Will can be varied to maintain eligibility to benefits, disappointed beneficiaries may look to the Court of Protection in the future to increase tax efficiency, to prevent gifts from failing or to correct other losses deriving from

poor Will drafting. Practitioners therefore now have a new avenue of relief to consider when advising beneficiaries adversely affected by the negligent drafting of a Will where those beneficiaries fall within the jurisdiction of the Court of Protection. Nevertheless the relief afforded required an application to the Court which was both costly and time consuming, and which could have been avoided if the full implications of the terms of the Will had been considered in the Will preparation process.

The case highlights the forethought required when preparing a Will and the need to plan beyond merely who you wish to benefit; consideration should also be given to the implications of inheritance to ensure loved ones benefit as intended. Tracey and the Specialist Private Client Team at Rees Page Solicitors can guide you through the complexities of preparing a Will in a straightforward and friendly manner. Pathways to Success

When we welcome new families to Tettenhall College, I am always reminded of how much we have to tell them. It is a real highlight of my day when I have the opportunity to talk about this wonderful school, its heritage and the careful and very deliberate combination of pursuing excellence and personal care, absolutely at the same time. Despite the challenges that 2020 has thrown at the world, and perhaps indeed because of these, I have been so pleased to welcome an increasing number of parents who are keen to consider Tettenhall College for their children. Many tell me how they have heard about our consistent and

determined mission to teach and educate throughout lockdowns and restrictions. They have heard great things about our teachers providing daily face to face remote learning and, as soon as we could possibly and safely do it, getting our young learners back in the classroom where they have remained with a full and expansive timetable. My team and I here at Tettenhall College have ambitious plans for 2021 and beyond; these are already underway. Our Senior School pupils are already experiencing the new and refreshed Scholarship Programme that ensures that scholarship in all its forms is accessible to every pupil, whether they have received a formal award or are working towards that level. Whilst our facilities are truly excellent and our school site is outstanding, we are continuing to invest in upgrading further areas to meet the demands of modern independent schooling. Early in 2021 work will begin on a highgrade project in School House, where common room spaces, co-curricular facilities, boarding facilities for full-time, weekly and flexi boarders, will all be developed. Senior School pupils are also taking their first steps on the Pathways Programme, offering enhanced career development opportunities, life skills and a focus on life after school, whether at the best universities or beyond.

There has never been a better time to get in touch and start a conversation with us about you, your family and your ambitions. With options to suit all circumstances, both day and boarding, we are confident that there is a tailored package to suit you. Personal virtual tours 118

are currently available, as are one to one meetings with myself.

We have two Entrance Assessment events taking place at the beginning of the year. Our Entrance Assessment for Y7 – Y9 takes place on Saturday 23rd January 2021, with scholarship assessments being completed during the week prior to this. Our Sixth Form Entrance Assessment will take place on Saturday 27th February, with our scholarship assessments taking place that week. So, please do contact us, let’s start a conversation. I can assure you of a very warm welcome and a commitment to high and shared ambitions. Mr Christopher McAllister Headmaster

NATIONALLY AWARD WINNING EDUCATION SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2020 THE SUNDAY TIMES

Creating Choice at 11 Plus As a Preparatory School, preparing girls for a variety of Senior School Entrance Examinations is an integral part of our curriculum. We prepare the girls for both selective and non-selective senior schools which are either fee-paying or state funded. We assist parents to choose from the range of senior schools available and enable each girl to find the very best senior school for her as an individual. We consider that it is only when your daughter reaches Year Six that the time has come to begin the decision-making process about which senior school will be right for her. When your daughter reaches ten or eleven years old, you will be aware of how she has developed and will be in a position to select a senior school that is best suited to her personality, interests and academic abilities. Newbridge Preparatory School as a ‘Standalone’ Prep School

offers each girl an educational experience which prepares her for her transition into the most suitable senior school for herself as an individual. We provide an education perfectly balanced, offering a rich and diverse curriculum of academic work, music, the arts and sport. Newbridge Preparatory School is highly successful in helping our girls gain entry to a wide variety of senior schools – schools that are looking for evidence of a high standard of all-round academic potential and achievement. Your daughter at eleven years old will be a very different person from when she walks through our doors for the first time at two years old. We will use our experience to help you choose a senior school that suits her. We will then do everything possible to help her gain a place. We equip our girls with the necessary skills and qualities that

will help them to become achievers, not only in senior school but in later life too. We are laying the right foundations for successful careers and positive futures.

The Future Newbridge offers stability and certainty in what seems to be a constantly changing world; this is reflected in the number of parents choosing Newbridge for their child’s education. We offer a positive, nurturing family environment based on traditional values. We are an aspirational school; one which respects 80+ years of heritage and continues to maintain its own unique identity as a small, caring prep school – we offer pastoral care for the whole family like nowhere else. You only have to set foot in the door to feel the warmth and happiness.

Come and visit us Please do not just take our word for it. Read our ‘Excellent’ 2016 inspection report (www.isi.net/schools/6725) or better still come and visit us – as every day is an open day. GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Centenary Celebrations Continue The garden has been funded by the generous donations of friends and family, who have sponsored 1 of the 100 trees to commemorate the Centenary year. A limited-edition school scarf has also been designed as pupils proudly showcase the Dominican history. Following regulations, we also look forward to welcoming back local clubs for their training sessions with our new state of the art cricket pitch and nets. To ensure St. Dominic’s remains as inclusive and accessible as possible, enquire about our new fee structure for 2021 entry. Key entry points into the school will have a reduced fee. Years 7 and 12 will cost an annual starting fee of only £8000. The Reception class will stand respectively at £5500 annually and Year 1, at £5750. For those considering an in year transfer, enquire now for availability.

As we bound into the New Year, the feeling of family and community is stronger than ever at St. Dominic’s Grammar School. The school has successfully adapted to a new way of life during these challenging circumstances. Miss Hovland, Head of Preparatory School says, ‘I’ve always greeted every child in the morning as they skip to school. It is so important, especially with our younger Reception children that they have a familiar, friendly face welcoming them.’

As the school steadily expands, early registration is advisable. Following COVID regulations, St. Dominic’s will be holding their Whole School Open Morning on Saturday 6th March 2021. Do come and experience first-hand the warm, family environment as you tour the school, view our new facilities and meet our experienced teachers. If you are unable to attend our Open Day, please contact our Admissions Secretary to arrange an alternative time on (01902) 850428 or via email: secretary@stdominicsgrammarschool.co.uk

Remote teaching via Microsoft Teams is in place to ensure all students – from as young as 4 years of age - continue their schooling without interruption, should it arise. St. Dominic’s Centenary celebrations will bring the exciting development of a new garden at the centre of the Preparatory School. The garden will highlight the school’s ethos: to encourage growth in mind, body and spirit. It will also promote outdoor learning as pupils will be able to grow their own food; the fully equipped food technology room and brand-new science lab will directly access the garden allowing for fresh food preparation and investigation.

Birchfield School looking to future with new investment Birchfield School will be welcoming children up to the age of 16 from September 2021, with extended and improved facilities following a £500,000 investment. The school, which currently educates boys and girls from ages four to 13, has become part of the St Philips Education group, and coowner of the group, Gary Hartland, said pupils, parents and staff could look forward to a bright future. He said: “We are delighted to be providing a sound financial platform for the Headmistress and her staff to continue offering excellent education across academic, sporting and so many other areas of school life. “We are passionate about providing the very best facilities for pupils, and will be undertaking a major

improvement programme, with the initial investment being in the region of £500,000. “These are exciting times and we very much look forward to working with Mrs Morris and her team to enhance the educational opportunities for pupils both now and in the future.” Already a range of changes are underway, the main innovation being the launch of an extension to the senior school department. From September 2021, Birchfield School will welcome pupils in Year 9 - building upon its reputation for educating boys and girls from four to 13, and will offer a three-year GCSE programme for pupils up to the age of 16. Headmistress, Sarah Morris, said the senior part of the school would be housed in the traditional setting of the main school house, with modern facilities combined with impressive outdoor sporting facilities.

on with us at the school they love so much for their ongoing education. “We are proud of our independent status, and the opportunity for pupils to continue their education up to Year 11 and GCSE allows the school to draw upon its subject specialists to build upon further success.” The school will continue to prepare pupils for 11+ entrance to the grammar schools, as well as offering tailored learning for Common Entrance and Scholarship to prestigious local and national senior schools at 13+, where pupils have been awarded 41 scholarships in the last three years alone. As part of the school’s development, minibus routes will be on offer across Tettenhall, Codsall, Telford and Newport.

She said: “We will see investment in so many areas of school life, adding to our already highly-respected educational provision, and allowing our pupils the opportunity to stay

A helping hand

at Christmas... asked our school community to lend a hand – to make Christmas a little easier for families in our local area.” The ‘Wish list’ contained many of the everyday essentials that the Food Bank supplies to families throughout the year. At Christmas, however, the demand is always greater than the supply. The list was compiled in conjunction with the Food Banks and Baby Bank to ensure that the school donated items needed most urgently.

A Shropshire school joined forces with Telford Foodbanks and Babybank before Christmas to help families in need.

“Whilst for many of us 2020 was a challenge, for some people in our local area it was both heartbreaking and tragic with loss of family, income, businesses, and even their homes.

Old Hall School in Wellington teamed up with those working in the community to create a wish-list of items that they hoped would make a big difference during the festive season and were needed urgently.

“Christmas brings with it many pressures for families – the expectations, the desire not to disappoint and the worry about costs in the New Year. For this reason, Rev Lee Plummer, the newly appointed Wrekin Old Hall Trust chaplain, and myself

Families from the school were encouraged to make donations from the list in a Covid-Safe way.

The list included non-perishable food items, toiletries, nappies and wipes together with infant milk. “Our Year 5 pupils took the lead in promoting this venture as part of their current Religious Studies unit of work,” added Mrs Stevens. “Once we had received all the donations Rev Plummer and myself delivered the boxes to Telford Crisis Support who liaised with all the Food Banks to ensure that the goods were directed to where the need was greatest. “We are so grateful to all the Old Hall families who donated so generously to this appeal and helped those who needed it.”

They could be ordered from home online and the donations were delivered directly to school which handed them over to be used where they were most needed. There was a phenomenal response from parents and staff to the appeal resulting in a large number of items being donated. “As we headed towards Christmas 2020, I think we all appreciated that the festive season this year would be one like no other,“ said Sue Stevens, Head of Religious Studies at Old Hall School.

2021 Motoring Preview

We’re all keen to put 2020 firmly into the rear-

Touch control system and the availability of new next generation digital OLED rear lighting.

what the new year has in store. As ever SUVs

Tech may be high on our wish list at the moment, but what about those discerning few who ache for style and individuality? As ever, Alfa Romeo has answers: this time, in the shape of the stunning Tonale.

view mirror and now’s the time to showcase remain top of the tree in sales, so here’s the low-down on three of 2021’s tastiest motors.

Leading the way is Audi’s new SQ5 Sportback, an all-new coupe-SUV which is based on the larger Q5. Competition in this increasingly

popular market will come from BMW’s X4 and

Mercedes’ GLC Coupé but Audi can handle it. Up front they’ll be a choice of a 2 litre four-cylinder diesel engine with mild-hybrid assistance, a 2

litre petrol, as well as a 342bhp 3 litre V6 diesel. This spring the SQ5 will be offered in two formats – SQ5 TDI and SQ5 TDI Vorsprung – the latter

featuring a particularly comprehensive selection

of indulgences and practical driver aids. Prices will

start at just shy of £60K and then skyrocket through

a host of options. Highlights include the introduction to the cabin of the latest Audi touchscreen MMI

What is underneath a mere Jeep Renegade, the Tonale will be the first Alfa Romeo to be sold with plug-in hybrid power. Its turbocharged 1.3 litre petrol engine and electric motor will produce less than 50g/km of Co2 emissions. It will have an electric-only range of more than 30 miles and prices are expected to start around £30,000. Soon after launch other versions of the Tonale will use petrol and diesel engines and they’ll be a firebreathing Quadrifoglio performance version too. Competing with market sector favourites such as the Volvo XC40 and Range Rover Evoque, the Tonale will have its work cut out when it lands in the summer. Alfa is betting big that the ace up its sleeve will be the plug-in hybrid system - which

will offer three driving modes: Advanced (which uses electric power for as long as possible), Dual Power (which makes the most of both sources to serve up optimum performance) and Natural (which keeps fuel economy in mind) - whereas for many it’ll be purely and simply about how it looks. After all, when isn’t it when it comes to Alfa? One marque that can never be accused of lagging behind in that department is Jaguar: and in the case of forthcoming E-Pace update, things are no different. Jaguar’s smallest SUV only went on sale in 2018, so this is a very early update. However, improved safety and driver assistance systems will be the main focus, as well as a few visual

changes to bring it into line with the recently refreshed XE saloon and F Type. Lots more connectivity is promised – most of which will run through an intuitive new Pivi Pro infotainment system – and a few Plug-in and mild Hybrid engines too. A new three cylinder petrol PHEV will offer an all-electric range of over 30 miles and will be able to charge from 0-80 percent in around 30 minutes. Another useful feature of the E-Pace will be its occupant wellbeing system, which filters ultrafine particles and allergens to give improved cabin air quality. Prices will start at around £33,000 when it goes on sale early in the year. by Rob Taylor

Friends of Bantock and BUGs News Bantock has really proved its worth since Covid-19 struck with so many choosing it for regular outdoor exercise during lockdown. Sadly, restrictions over recent months have really held us up with regard to fundraising activities but thankfully Bantock inspired two local residents to compile books of verses they’d written during this period, with proceeds from sales being donated to us. We are indebted to them both, and look forward to this new year when we will be able to make

use of the money raised, by putting into practice plans for the gardens and park. If you would like to join us by becoming members, your annual subscription of £10 individual membership, £15 for a household, will be put to good use, enabling us to add to the facilities and attraction of this lovely place. Last year we purchased additional picnic benches and replanted beds within the rose garden. Our proposals for this year will be outlined in the next newsletter which will be sent out to members in spring.

For membership: Email: bantockfriends@virginmedia.com or telephone FoB secretary: 01902 331272

Registered Charity No 1065808

If gardening or litter-picking is your interest we shall be looking for BUG volunteers when activities can fully restart. For details on becoming members or volunteers see below. We’d love to hear from you.

To volunteer with the BUGs: Telephone Val: 01902 342715 or Roger: 01902 341930

Copies of one of the booklets based on Bantock in Lockdown are still available. To purchase one, a fitting keepsake of this strange time, call 01902 342715. £2 a copy which includes free local hand delivery, or plus £1 p&p further afield.
