from the editor while helping residents access reputable, local businesses.
Spring is a hopeful season, a time for new life, new beginnings: a perfect time to start looking forward. But for now let me take you on a trip back down Memory Lane, because this bumper edition marks the sixth anniversary of Town and Village Life magazine. Following hot on the heels of sister publication Wolverhampton West magazine (which started nearly eight years ago), TVL began with Sales Director Gisella Wiley and I looking to expand our success into new territory. As a Stourbridge boy, born and bred, this magazine has taken me back to home turf. Right from our early days, starting out once again from scratch, we were determined to build as formidable a reputation as that we’d already earned in the Wolverhampton area: for delivering fine editorial content

Learning from past experiences and making good use of our team from Wolverhampton West – talented writers, tireless delivery agents from M I Distribution and graphic design from Ed Wilde and team at Studio 28 (our thanks go out to you all) – we take great pride in attending to a wide spectrum of business: local, national and global. We are always happy to help local companies flourish and enjoy many longstanding relationships with the local business community. After all, we’re a local business ourselves and recognise the need to look after our own. Our prices are always affordable and give advertisers the opportunity to book long term, loyalty is always rewarded. The team and I are always looking ahead for stories to fill up our pages, so if you’ve got a charity event or a local story please get in touch at info@ townandvillagelifemag.co.uk. We’d love to hear from you. But in the meantime let us help you look forward, to transition into the new season. It’s time for a recharge and what better time than during National Bed Month. This March the bed specialists at Dreamland Brierley Hill will teach you the art of getting a good night’s sleep – just make sure you don’t ruin all their hard work by watching the latest touring performance from acclaimed horror author AG Smith the night before. Spooky stuff to scare the pants off everyone is always guaranteed. Now’s the time to get into your garden, because the clocks go forward this month, so we’ve got everything you need from top tips to top suppliers – even if you’re not green fingered there are specialists from Boningale and Lealans Garden Centre who’ll help you out.
If you really hate dirt under your fingernails but love to see flowers aplenty, check out leading artificial flower supplier Country Baskets in Lye near Stourbridge. And if the weather warms up you may fancy hopping into a Jacuzzi hot tub from Webbs Garden Centre. A clean break from winter woes we can guarantee – unless it snows in May! Home improvement is another big deal right now, so we’ve got fireplaces, furniture, curtains, all types of flooring, blinds, kitchens, bathrooms, built-in bedroom wardrobes, windows and doors, fencing, and lighting – plus the tradesmen to do the heavy lifting.
When it comes to fashion (including the quirky and off-beat – like dress agency Tiger Lily in Kingswinford), hair, beauty, health and well-being we’ve got it covered as well – 34 pages of all your favourites. There are competitions galore from The Grand Theatre, West Midland Safari Park, Wombourne Tandoori, and Wollaston Beauty Clinic; a food review at The Cowshed and some tasty news about Halfpenny Green Vineyards’ new dining space; an exclusive Lexus NX review from Lexus Wolverhampton; news from Porsche Wolverhampton; and the very best way to stay ahead of traffic congestion frustration: Signature luxury car service. Beyond this we’ll tell you how to choose a top independent school for your child; how to grab an early pension with Midland Independent Financial and maximise your ISA allowance at Dudley Building Society. It was Jeweller Rudells’ 80th anniversary bash at their Harborne and Wolverhampton branches, see our Social Scene pages. There’s really nowhere better to visit than Rudells to get back into mum’s good books if you forgot Mother’s Day. Just – whatever you do – don’t forget that Easter is early in April this year. Spring is in the air so let’s embrace it.

ROMAN BATHROOMS
TWO EN-SUITES
SAME PRODUCTS, DIFFERENT STYLE
Roman Bathrooms pride themselves on their ability to create unique designs which is illustrated so well by these two en-suite projects. Mrs Simpson was looking to refurbish two ensuites for her daughter and son. Neither room
was especially spacious but Roman Bathrooms has created two different designs that reflect the personalities of each young adult. Using the same products but with different colours and textures, the two rooms are great examples of what can be done with a small space. Both have a spacious shower and plenty of storage. A neutral colour theme and the use of mirrors keeps both rooms light and airy and with tiles on the floor and the walls they are also easy to clean.
“We are all delighted with the new bathrooms,” says Carol. “Caroline has made both rooms look much larger than they are and created light filled spaces that are a pleasure to be in.” “I have loved working with Roman Bathrooms. The service is so professional from beginning to end. It was important to me not to have to manage a stream of independent traders. With Roman Bathrooms I know that if something goes wrong, or if something needs fixing over time, I only have to make one call which is fantastic.”

Interior design trends
2018 By Julia Kendell as interior design spokesperson for The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show
Bedrooms “The focus for the year ahead will be on functionality in the bedroom. For those who want to create more open space, it’s best to consider taking your clothing and storage out of this room to ensure a calm and relaxing place to relax and sleep. Consider converting an underused spare bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe.” “In addition, beds are viewed as the most important item in the bedroom as they contribute significantly to sleeping quality. Invest in a good quality mattress; it’s important to check if it can provide long-term care for the back and provide you with a good night’s sleep. Also, to wake up rested, a dark environment helps boost sleeping quality, so the choice of curtains or blinds is vital.” “Advances in sleep technology have developed to allow homeowners bespoke solutions to ensure a great night’s sleep. The latest ‘antigravity’ mattresses give the body an opportunity to heal overnight with no stressful strain on any joint. Skimping on comfort is a false economy and has a detrimental effect on all areas of life.”
Bathrooms “With life increasingly fast-paced, creating a spa-like retreat in the bathroom is high on the wish list for many. Pinterest has reported a 269 per cent increase in ‘spa bathroom’ searches in the past 12 months alone. To create a restful and recharging environment, plan a large bath for leisurely soaks and always try for comfort before purchase. A neutral scheme with natural materials such as marble or textural slate are a key theme for 2018. Ensure adequate storage to ensure a restful, uncluttered environment and upgrade the lighting to a dimmable circuit. Integral speakers in the bathroom will contribute to the bathing experience.”
Kitchens “Many self-builders have included a secondary ‘practical’ kitchen in recent years and this trend is likely to spiral further. Separating the real functional area from the show/theatre kitchen proves to be useful, as the house owner can leave the dirty dishes, trash
and everything else that comes with preparing a meal in the secondary kitchen, while enjoying a hassle-free social experience with friends in the main area, where cooking skills can shine.” “For 2018 materials and textures are key with combinations of gloss cabinetry and natural timber, matt door finishes and terrazzo tiling or two colours of cabinetry to add interest to a functional space. After many years of neutral kitchens, forest green, peacock blue and this year’s Pantone colour of the year, ultraviolet, will be showing up in design-led kitchens.”
Living room “For those with the space, a separate TV/cinema room is the antidote to the all-consuming, massive TVs overtaking any social interaction. This creates a calming area within the living room for good old-fashioned conversation by the fireplace. “ “Technology has again provided a solution for the aesthetics when incorporating a TV in a living room. Mirrored TVs look like elegant framed mirrors when the TV is off and instantly become highresolution screens when required.” “In addition, statement art is replacing gallery-style walls with super-sized images, providing a clean and powerful aesthetic.” Julia also suggests that, above everything, an interior should have soul, balance and feel comfortable to live in, tailored to each person’s liking. More important than following fashion is to decorate your own home with pieces and materials that make you feel good.

client that we recently acquired, who fortunately happened to discuss with her neighbour the options, or more to the point the lack of options she had with her preserved final salary pension benefits held by Sainsbury’s. Her neighbour recommended that she speak to myself which she duly did. It transpired that she was approaching her 55th birthday and in desperate need of some tax free cash so she had contacted Sainsbury’s and they told her that yes she could take her tax free cash however she would be heavily penalised for doing so and also, once she took her tax free cash, her pension income would start. The benefits payable from Sainsbury’s on her 55th birthday were tax free cash of £24,832.60 and a pension for life of £3,724.89 p.a. which she would have to take if she wanted to access her tax free cash. This was considerably less than what she would get once she reached her 65th birthday as her projected pension benefits at that time would be tax free cash of £63,524.00 and a pension of £9,528.00 p.a. Alternatively, she was offered a pension transfer value of £191,362.57 which, when compared to what she would have if she took her tax free cash of £24,832.60 and a pension for life of £3,724.89 per annum, made a transfer highly favourable. By transferring she had access to tax free cash immediately, in excess of £45,000 and, more importantly, she can leave the balance invested and take an income when she does eventually retire. She was glad to hear that she did not have to take all of her tax-free cash in one go, and loved the fact that she could take what she needed now and then access the rest as required. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
I must add at this point that if this client was not looking to take benefits immediately, my advice would certainly have been that she remain in the scheme as the transfer value being offered was not sufficient to warrant transferring. To put this into perspective the second client I want to look at first requested a transfer value 3 years ago and was offered £123,000 - a figure way below what we thought represented fair value. We then diarised this and the following year the transfer value came back at £127,000 and 12 months later £134,000. Compare this with the transfer value she has just received which is £204,000 - a significant increase and now we are looking at fair value. The motto of this is that whilst transfer values look great it is not always preferable to move away from a guaranteed scheme unless it is right for you.

Dudley in Old Advertisements written a number of other books about villages in South Staffordshire. According to Paul, “Over the course of the nineteenth century, there were many thousands of advertisements in directories and newspapers. They can be interesting to look at on their own, but what I’ve tried to do is combine them with details from other sources, so readers can get a better idea of the people behind the advertisements. The result is a tiny ‘potted history’ for each ad”. The book covers manufacturers, shops, pubs, trades and professions, and gives an insight
into the huge range of items which were made and sold right in the heart of the town. It also reveals how family members worked together, the surprising extent of bankruptcy and how external factors could have serious consequences upon livelihoods. A glimpse into the homes and workplaces of business people in the town also shows how they moved around and often dabbled in other trades. The book is available at Saturday Books on Tower Street in Dudley, or online at lulu.com/spotlight/ books_by_paul_robinson.
A new history book about Dudley takes a different look back at businesses and individuals in the town during the Victorian era. Rather than old photographs, ‘Dudley in Old Advertisements’ features dozens of ads from the period, with interesting details about the individuals involved and the products they made or sold. This is the second book about the town published by local history writer Paul Robinson, who has also

The importance
of a good night’s sleep
20
We spend about a third of our lives in bed so if we live until 75 we’ll have been asleep for 25 years! We all know that a good night’s sleep is important but how much sleep do we really need and why do we do it?
sleep we should get because we’re all different. Providing you’re not regularly trying to get through your life on two or three hours a night (unless you’re a new mother in which case you have our sympathy) it’s important not to get too hung up on the quantity of your sleep but instead focus on the quality.
The question of why we sleep is actually quite mysterious. In simple terms it’s a daily extended bout of rest where we lay down with our eyes closed. But there’s more to sleep than meets the eye.
• Comfortable temperature (16-18C)
During this time, our bodies replenish energy stores and make vital repairs, while our minds organise and store the memories from the day before. The amount of sleep we need depends on our age, sex, health and other factors, and our sleep cycles change as we grow older.
• A large bed - Buy the largest you can accommodate
Most of us know (or think we do) that we should get ‘8 hours sleep a night’ but in fact there is no magic number for how much
• Quiet - you can buy soft earplugs if noise is a problem though some people sleep better with white noise in the background.
The perfect sleep environment • Fresh air circulating but no draughts. • Dark - try using blackout blinds or an eye mask.
• A quality mattress - try out lots and buy the best you can afford. • Ban technology - The blue light emitted by screens is hazardous to good quality sleep.
• Routine - A regular bedtime routine is an important cue to help us fall asleep. Think about the bath, book, and bed routine we often establish for our children. You can use essential oils, a good book and a warm milky drink. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and screen use too close to bedtime, and never go to bed on an argument! Dreamland, based in Brierley Hill is an independent family-run business and has been the home of luxury beds, bed frames and headboards for more than 40 years and over the decades has earned an enviable reputation in the trade. The friendly and knowledgeable team understand the importance of a good night’s sleep, that’s why they’re keen to help their customers find the right bed for them. Why not pop along to Dreamland, 23 Mill Street, Brierley Hill, DY5 2RG where Mike Brown and his trained team are able to offer impartial advice to make sure you find the perfect bed. www.dreamlandbedding.co.uk.

Off the field the focus is very much on the established May Weekend of Friday the 4th through to Sunday the 6th when we host a Corporate Lunch, our May Ball and a charity day in aid of “Tackling Knife Crime”. The May Ball on Saturday 5th will feature the “One Stop Boogie” band and will be themed as “The Royal Ball”, the celebration that HRH Harry and Meghan wish they could have. The Vodka Luge is on ice, so it looks as though it will be another sell out night.
Now is the time of year that there is a double focus at Stourton Park.
The guest speakers at Friday’s Corporate Lunch are Bill Beaumont CBE, the Chairman of World Rugby and past England captain, David Gower OBE, the elegant left hander and past England captain, Squadron Leader John Peters, the RAF Tornado pilot who was shot down, captured and tortured in the first Gulf War. Our Master of Ceremonies will be the ex-British Lion John Bentley and Philip Serrell will be auctioning the range of sporting prizes on the day. Last year the day attracted over 1400 guests and at the time of writing we are well on the way to equalling that number.
Obviously all rugby activity is paramount as the end of the league season approaches, whether that be for the 1st XV battling for honours in National Two North or newly promoted Stourbridge Lions as they adjust to the standards of Midlands One West against local teams like Bridgnorth and Dudley Kingswinford, who were a couple of seasons ago playing the First XV. More about the playing side later.
We are very proud of our RFUfunded artificial grass pitch which has now been in use for four months. It has been especially useful during the bleak mid-winter for all age groups when some of our grass pitches have been waterlogged and it has already been used by local rugby clubs like Kidderminster and Bridgnorth, Birmingham Medics, King Edwards College and Bromsgrove and

Solihull schools. Over the weekend of February 23rd to February 25th we were privileged to host a National Development weekend for England Under 18 players from all over the country and to witness many who will ultimately be wearing the full England shirt. In the leagues the Lions are holding their own and after last weekend’s loss away at Hereford now sit comfortably mid-table in sixth place. Lighting your home:
Accent Lighting: The most creative way of lighting, but not exactly for functional use. This type of light highlights key features to create drama and visual interest. For example, towards an item of furniture or a wall, hanging through the creation of contrasts in light and shadow. Wall washers and directional spotlights work with miniature decorative lamps to break up the uniformity of a room’s ambient lighting and add extra depth.
Why is it so important? Lighting has its own role to play in our daily lives, when it comes to decorating your home. With just the flick of a switch, you can change the whole atmosphere of a room. Before creating a lighting plan, it’s vital to know how light works in each room and what purpose it will carry. Task Lighting: Gives off a bright, focused light to one area or work
surface. It helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, preparing, and cooking food etc. Kitchens are the ideal place for task lighting as recessed downlights, LED strips and under-cupboard fittings can be placed for direct light to food prep areas. Another ideal place for task lighting is the study, created with desk lamps to help with reading or working. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eye strain. Ambient Lighting: provides an area with overall illumination. Perhaps the most basic form of lighting, and one you’d expect to see in most homes. It imitates the effects of natural light, without glare and at a comfortable level. Ambience is achieved with most ceiling and wall fittings.

RECIPE
Vanilla Panna Cotta with Raspberry Sauce
Preparation time: 1-2 hours Cooking time: 10-20 minutes Servings:
To serve
METHOD 1.
To make the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft.
2.
Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod, scraped seeds and sugar into a heavybottomed pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard.
3.
Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan. Remove from the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved.
4 INGREDIENTS For the panna cotta • 3 gelatine leaves • 250ml/9fl oz milk • 250ml/9fl oz double cream • 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out • 25g/1oz sugar For the sauce • 175g/6oz sugar
4.
Divide the mixture between four pretty glass serving bowls and set aside to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set.
5.
To make the sauce place the sugar, water and the splash
• 175ml/6fl oz water • Splash raspberry, cherry or blackcurrant liqueur • 350g/12oz raspberries 36
of liqueur into a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved.
• Sprigs of fresh mint and blueberries (optional) 6.
Remove the pan from the heat and add the raspberries. Use a hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Pass it through a sieve to remove the seeds.
7.
To serve, pour the sauce over the panna cotta and garnish with the blueberries and a sprig of mint.
Alternative serving method: Pour the panna cotta mix into oiled moulds rather than serving dishes, and set in the fridge as before. Blitz half the raspberries into the sauce and strain through the sieve, then stir in the remaining raspberries. When the panna cotta are set, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn the panna cotta out on to a plate, spoon over the sauce and decorate with blueberries and mint.

Kinver Rotary Club To plant 300 additional trees Kingsford Lane Country Park is soon to have more than 300 additional ash, beech and spruce trees as part of a worldwide scheme by the Rotary movement to plant more than 1.2 million trees across the continents – one for each member of the organisation. Although the Rotary Club of Kinver has a membership of 45 the club has agreed with the National Trust to plant 300 of the broadleaved species as part of the Trust’s Woodland Trust initiative. The original idea from Rotary International’s current president
38
was designed to increase worldwide recognition of the movement while, at the same time, making a significant contribution to the green environment of the planet.
Rotarian Nick Geoghegan who is heading the project for the club with National Trust Manager Helen Selkirk
The club has gained the support of Brindley Heath Junior School in Kinver and is currently compiling a planting scheme which will involve National Trust volunteers who will demonstrate planting techniques to the pupils. South Staffs M.P. Gavin Williamson has expressed his support for the project and expects to pick up a spade at one of the planting days. The cost of the trees has been taken from the funds put aside for a worthy cause following a charity garden party at the home of a friend of the Kinver club in 2016.

What’s new in 2018 at
West Midland
SafarI & LEISURE PARK ARRIVING SPRING 2018
WMSP.CO.UK Spring Grove, Bewdley, Worcs, DY12 1LF
Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year. The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit – Ice Age which is due to arrive in spring.
Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paraceratherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall – a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.
The Park has also teamed up with award-winning studio Aardman for their prehistoric comedy movie, Early Man. Fans of the film will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of parts of the set used in the movie inside
the ‘Early Man Secret Cave’, which will be at the Park until Easter. Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feet-tall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drivethrough is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild.
West Midland Safari Park opens daily for its summer season from 10 February 2018. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and tickets are available from the park’s website at www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone on 01299 402114. You can find out more on the safari park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook. com/WestMidSafari.
We have teamed up with West Midland Safari & Leisure Park to give you the chance to win free admission tickets. The tickets entitle a family of four to visit on one occasion up to 9th November 2018. Theme Park rides not included.

Trust the Experts at
PEJ Construction Services And, the assurances don’t end there as PEJ are fully insured – with 10million pounds Public Liability insurance – and offers a 10 year guarantee on its work. Providing customers with a quality and efficient service as well as competitive prices is a must for PEJ. “Every member of our team is experienced as well as CPCS and CSCS accredited. Each job that we undertake is completed on time and with a quality finish and we also ensure that our prices are competitive.” In fact, the company has been transforming tired, cracked and crumbling driveways for more than a decade.
If you’re planning on making any changes to your property it’s essential to find a company that you can trust to carry out the work. Tipton-based driveway experts, PEJ Construction Services, are well aware of just how important it is for homeowners to enjoy complete peace-of-mind, and so they’re pleased to announce that they’ve joined the elite FairTrades register trustmark - a government-backed endorsement of reputable businesses. Clients of PEJ already know that the company offer an unbeatable service, that’s why the business has earned an excellent reputation in the trade and won contracts with some of the biggest names in the construction industry. For those who are new to the company though, they can rest assured that PEJ has passed extensive vetting procedures put 44
in place by FairTrades before being accepted as a member. As Director, Pete Woodbine explains: “We’re really pleased to be FairTrades registered and to have met every one of the criteria.” Businesses applying for registration are thoroughly investigated by the organisation and must have been trading for more than a year. They are also subjected to financial and legal checks as well as reference checks from previous customers. “All aspects of our service to customers are looked into and we’re scored on factors like quality of workmanship, timeliness, value-for-money and courtesy.” And, the checks don’t finish when membership begins; FairTrades members are monitored throughout their membership to ensure that they continue to meet the high standards laid out by the organisation. “The aim of FairTrades and its ‘Scales of Justice’ logo is to give the customer peace-of-mind and to take the worry out of finding a reputable home improvement contractor.”
“We’ve worked with homeowners across the Midlands giving properties of all sizes a fantastic new look by resurfacing and laying driveways, building new patios, adding new extensions, landscaping gardens and undertaking a full range of groundworks.” Unlike many other companies, PEJ has its own specialist vehicles and equipment which allows for a highly efficient service. And, when the job’s done the company clears the site and recycles any leftover materials. So, it’s no surprise that PEJ has been employed to undertake groundworks on new build sites for construction industry giants like Persimmon Homes, IB Construction, MG Development, Tattenhall Homes and Maythorn Construction. It’s not just the big jobs that PEJ complete though, the team are always happy to undertake small projects and even offer clients the option to spread the costs of work with interest-free credit. “Our clients have been really impressed with the work we’ve done for them and many have recommended us to their friends and family,” adds Pete. So, there’s no excuse to put up with a shabby driveway any longer, call the experts at PEJ and transform the look of your property today.

WALPURGISNACHT
Three chilling tales, one terrifying night Alan Birch who plays The Librarian in the show
In October 2016 a packed house at Stourbridge’s Bonded Warehouse watched the premiere performance of A G Smith’s ‘An Evening of Delectable Terror,’ a chilling series of ghost stories performed by Alan Birch. The show received a five star press review and left audiences shell-shocked and clamouring for more. Since then ‘An Evening of Delectable Terror’ has toured extensively, including a sold out run of performances in Birmingham and London and has been given outstanding reviews by BBC Dragon’s Den star Piers Linney, best-selling authors Robin Jarvis, Miranda Dickinson and Ian Thornton and Legendary Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant who came to see the show twice.
As A G Smith explained: “I met Alan Birch on the set of the film ‘Inspector Drake’ and we became friends, discovering that we had a mutual love of horror stories. Alan has famously played the comedy character of Inspector Drake on stage and film for many years to great acclaim. Alan came to see one of my readings and we began talking about the idea of turning the stories in to a more theatrical experience. As a writer this was a dream come true. I do not have any of the skills that Alan possesses as an actor, so to see my words performed so brilliantly on stage is an absolute honour.” The success of ‘An Evening of Delectable Terror’ has meant increased interest from venues to book the next performance, so in 2018 Alan Birch will star in a brand new production called ‘Walpurgisnacht.’ “Walpurgisnacht features three new horror stories by A G Smith that all take place over the evening of April 30th. There is something here for every lover of horror as the stories explore themes of witchcraft, monsters and ghost stories. Anyone who saw us on tour in 2017 will have an idea of what to expect, but for those of you who are new to the shows all I can say is be prepared for scares aplenty. People will be screaming and jumping out of their seats. This is not a show for the faint-hearted and we would certainly not recommend it to be seen by children.”
‘Walpurgisnacht’ will premiere at the legendary Katie Fitzgerald’s in Stourbridge on Thursday April 26th and begin a tour in Autumn 2018 which will take it back to Birmingham and London. The premiere is expected to sell out so people are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment. To obtain tickets please call Weeping Bank Productions on: 07798 914579. For anyone who missed the chance to see last year’s ‘An Evening of Delectable Terror’ there are still two opportunities to catch the show: Saturday March 10th at 7.30pm at Bodenham Arboretum in Kidderminster (this show will include a meal). Tickets priced at £15 (+ booking fee), call 01562 852444 to reserve tickets. Saturday September 29th at the Tudor House Museum in Worcester. Tickets (£10) call 01562 852444 to reserve tickets. For more information about the shows and to see 2018 tour dates please visit: www. weepingbankproductions. co.uk. You can also visit their Facebook page (search for Weeping Bank) or follow them on Twitter: @WeepingBank For more information about A G Smith’s work please follow the author on Twitter @harvesterOTnow
Kinver author A G Smith has been entertaining audiences throughout Staffordshire with readings of his ghost stories for several years but it wasn’t until he met Alan Birch that the idea of turning his stories into a more theatrical reading became a possibility. 50

Spring is in the air Thinking about welcoming a new pet into your home? Then read on…
By Tracey Tripicchio, Senior Registered Veterinary Nurse, Blacks Vets.
As the ground begins to thaw and our thoughts turn towards warmer days, many of us find an extra spring in our step as we contemplate our plans for when the lighter, brighter weather arrives. Here at Blacks Vets, it’s at this time of year that we start to see an increase in the number of young pets coming through our doors, as clients old and new welcome a furry addition to their families. It’s an exciting time and also an important one, as routines established now can have a significant impact on how easily a pet adapts to their new life. Here are our top tips for helping your new arrival settle in.
1. Make time Preparing to bring a new pet home is very much like preparing to bring a baby home, with the same careful considerations applying regarding care and routine. Above all, choosing a time when you are freely available should be at the top of your list so that you can be there for your pet as much as possible in the early days. If possible, book time off work and try to ensure that other people who will be involved in your pet’s care can be
around too. This helps familiarity and trust to build quickly and can make for a more harmonious journey in the long term.
2. Slowly does it It can be an overwhelming experience for a new pet to arrive at their new home, particularly for a young animal that has only just left its mother and litter mates. Although it can be tempting to bubble over with excitement, try to keep calm and quiet for the first few days as your pet adjusts to their new surroundings and family. Keep music and TV noise low and ask children to be considerate when playing near to their pet. Younger children may benefit from having another distraction, such as a new toy, so that they do not focus solely on their animal and unintentionally cause distress.
3. Keep it familiar For puppies, kittens and rabbits, providing the breeder with an old piece of clothing that you have worn means that your smell can be introduced to the new arrival before you bring them home and may help combat anxiety on arrival. You can also consider asking the breeder for a little of their bedding to bring back with you so that you can add it to their new bed, crate or hutch to promote familiarity. Don’t be tempted to give your pet the run of your whole house to begin with, instead concentrate on just one room at a time so that confidence builds up gradually.
4. Vital early care It’s important to register your new pet with a reputable vet as soon as possible in order to administer necessary vaccinations and check the overall health of your new four-legged friend. Here at Blacks, we understand that a new pet at home can be an expensive time and so created our fantastic Pet Starter

5. Getting out and about As the weeks progress, you should start to see your new pet’s confidence grow and will be able to introduce more new experiences to them. Once your puppy or kitten has been microchipped, vaccinated and treated for worms and fleas, you can start to plan to take them outdoors. For kittens this generally happens at around 6 months old, but for puppies this is only once immunity has developed. Ask your vet for individual guidance on this. Bunnies generally receive their first vaccination at 10 weeks old with immunity developing within 3 weeks. For puppy owners, we offer monthly Puppy Parties where dogs
www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
under 16 weeks old can safely meet with other puppies to play games and have fun learning to socialise with other canines. Visit www.blacksvets.co.uk and click on What’s On to find out more. Our Puppy Party page also features a useful socialisation tick sheet with suggestions for people, places and situations to introduce pups to before they are 20 weeks old.
At Blacks, our vets and veterinary nurses are mines of information when it comes to advising on all aspects of pet care and are delighted to help you with any queries you may have along your pet parenting journey. We look forward to welcoming you and your new addition to one of our five Black Country branches very soon! www.blacksvets.co.uk

Prepare for the growing season
Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton
The weather should become milder as we move through March so it is the perfect time to get back out into the garden and start preparing for the season ahead. Weed and clean borders, then apply a general-purpose fertiliser before you add any mulches of compost or well rotted manure. If you have any lime hating (ericaceous) plants, such plants as Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azalea, make sure you use an ericaceous fertiliser as they require extra trace elements. Dead head bulbs particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on to send nutrients back to the bulb and top dress with fertiliser. This should give you a good display of flowers next year. Many of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up
– Lilies, Canna, Pineapple flower and Summer Snowflakes. Always plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Lilies, especially the newer Tree Lilies benefit from being started off in pots and planted outside once growing strongly. Dahlias should be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse. As the weather becomes increasingly mild, thoughts start turning to the lawn. We recommend that you use MO Bacter to help control moss. This is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns, which now carries the RHS logo on the bag. It feeds the lawn over a 12-week period
and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil, which is added to an organic fertiliser, which digests the moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment. Aerate the lawn with a fork or spikes on shoes to improve drainage. Any bare patches can then be reseeded. Feed regularly throughout the growing season. Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Sow your first and second early potatoes followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears.

THE NATURAL BENEFITS OF HEDGING A key role for a garden designer is to advise on what kind of materials and plants are appropriate for your garden, and an element that shouldn’t be overlooked is the boundary or internal screening. The most commonly used options are wooden fences or trellis screens however, walls, railings and hedging can also be a good alternative. Wherever possible I like to explore the possibility of using a suitable hedge, evergreen, semi evergreen or deciduous because it can create a really beautiful garden backdrop, while also offering protection from the elements, privacy and habitat for wildlife, not to mention security.
on the style of garden you wish to create, a hedge can be used in many ways; to provide a warm natural atmosphere in a country garden, soften the surroundings of a city garden or add structure to a modern garden. A hedge can also be a useful screen for those areas you might want to hide from view in your garden. Plus, what many people don’t realise is that you can buy hedging in all growth forms, from 1 year old whips that are about as thick as a pencil up to a fully mature 2.0 meter hedge in a choice of varieties according to your garden aspect
Natural hedging also suits properties of all ages and size, creating both a traditional or contemporary style. Dependent
and soil condition. Available varieties include native, exotic, flowering, ever-green and fruit bearing. In terms of upkeep (one of the biggest questions), all hedging will require some form of maintenance, at the very least pruning, but it will depend on the varieties you choose (and for me a twice yearly clip outweighs the chore and expense of painting a fence). Our advice would be to do your research before you buy or contact our award-winning garden design team for help.
The best time to plant hedging The optimum hedge planting season runs from November through to March/April, at this time of year you can also buy your hedging plants more cost effectively as bare root or rootballed, depending on the variety and the size you are looking for. Containerised options are also available year round.

Welcoming visitors from all over the world, the couple have long been ensuring that their guests enjoy a wonderful stay.

Located in Stourton - just outside of Wollaston – New Wood Farm boasts two beautifully renovated self-catering cottages that lie in a tranquil and picturesque countryside setting that’s within
As Linda explains: “We have been hosting the barn for over 20 years and have had guests stay with us from as far away as Australia and America, as well as from all over the UK. We also have a lot of local people stay with us too.” Holiday makers, business people, those visiting relatives and local people needing a place to stay in between a house move, renovation works or even to recuperate after surgery - have all enjoyed what New Wood has to offer. “There are plenty of different reasons why guests choose to stay with us at New Wood but we hope that the reason they return time and time again is because of the enjoyable stay they’ve had.” The Barn sleeps four people and has two bathrooms and The Stable provides accommodation for two.

With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that guests at New Wood Farm can’t wait to book their next stay.

Smarty Pants & Lola-Belle’s Day nurseries with a difference
Every parent wants the best for their child, that’s why when it comes to selecting a day nursery finding an organisation that offers stimulating care in a safe environment is a must. Whether your little one is as young as six weeks old or almost school age, you can trust that when they attend Smarty Pants or Lola-Belle’s nurseries they’ll be in the hands of a highly trained team who are passionate about enabling children to express their own imagination, in becoming confident young people. As Company Director, Lydia Browning explains: “Providing the highest standards in childcare has always been my number one priority. I have always loved working with children ever since I left school and became a nursery nurse.” With many years of experience in childcare working in various day nurseries, on the children’s ward at Russell’s Hall Hospital
and at Alexandra High School, Lydia boasted an impressive background long before she opened her award-winning nurseries and gained her BA hons degree in Early Years Education. “We opened our first Smarty Pants nursery in Tipton back in 2007 and we quickly became very busy. We had 150 children on our waiting list, that’s why we decided to open our second nursery, LolaBelle’s, two years later in Tipton.” Named after Lydia’s daughter, Lola-Belle, the nursery proved equally successful as Smarty Pants. “In 2017 we won a tender with Sandwell Council to set up our third nursery, Smarty Pants at Lightwoods House.” And Lydia was awarded a second tender which enabled her to take over the running of the nursery based at Halesowen Family Centre in Lye. Each nursery has earned an excellent reputation and Lydia’s achievements have been recognised with a catalogue of awards, which include the ‘Management Award’ from Platinum Training, the ‘Business Management Award’ from Sandwell Council – which Lydia won in 2008, 2010, 2015 and 2017 and the ‘Practitioner of the Year Award’ 2012.
Company Director, Lydia Browning
62
In addition, staff member Lisa Hickman also won the
‘Practitioner of the Year Award’ in 2016 and both Smarty Pants and Lola-Belle’s were awarded a certificate of recognition for their involvement in the REAL project to raise the standards of literacy for children in 2016. Lola-Belle’s also picked-up the ‘Parents as Partners in Early Years Award’ from Sandwell Council in 2017. And that’s not all. “We’re really proud that our nurseries have been awarded ‘Millie’s Mark’, a quality mark for nurseries where all of our employees are trained in paediatric first aid. The mark was awarded in May 2017 by the National Day Nurseries Association and Millie’s Trust.” The team at Lydia’s nurseries aren’t just highly trained; they’re also passionate about children and eager to make their time at the nursery amazing. “We all work really hard to ensure that every child’s time spent with us is special.” Lydia’s own children, LolaBelle and James both attended the nurseries. “My own children enjoyed their time at our nursery and as a mother I understand just how important it is to know that your child is in a great environment,” adds Lydia. So, why not let your little one start their own adventure at Smarty Pants or Lola-Belle’s?

In more recent times, this country house in picturesque Worfield has been a romantic and elegant setting for weddings and the latest custodians, Elizabeth and Joseph, have made it their mission to take Davenport House to the next level. Dating back to 1726, this Georgian mansion was once the home of William Davenport and comes with a history of love. Following a forbidden romance, William married Jane Bromley and their grandson, Henry, commissioned Francis Smith to design Davenport House as we know it today. Full of traditional grandeur and character, this remarkable house has recently undergone an incredible transformation to make it one of the standout wedding venues in the area. Since taking charge of this stunning setting, Elizabeth and Joseph have worked tirelessly to renovate each aspect of Davenport House. The Great Hall, a spectacular setting for wedding ceremonies at the front of the house, features cool grey walls that highlight the house’s past while providing a contemporary

accompaniment to the impressive painting and intricate plasterwork. The Drawing Room has had its elegance fully restored, combining an authentic feel with exquisite views of the venue’s tranquil grounds and hidden garden. The old stables are just a few steps from the front door and now provide the perfect space to prepare before tying the knot. The cast iron hay racks remain, but sit alongside comfy sofas, a well-equipped kitchen, plenty of mirrors and everything that a couple could need in the build-up to their ceremony. The grounds also hold a handful of private and peaceful cottages that will offer guests a wonderful night’s stay after the celebrations have drawn to a close. A wander up the ornate staircase reveals a collection of beautifully furnished bedrooms, each with their own style and unique features. Huge beds, inviting sofas and chic décor make each one a joy to spend the night in. With views over the idyllic pond and secluded grounds, they sum up everything that makes Davenport House a truly special wedding venue. The Cowshed
P a ttin g h a m
By Rob Taylor It’s hard to know where to start with this place. To say that it’s hard to find and hidden away is silly in a digital age where even my Granny has a smartphone. To call it Pattingham’s best kept secret is to overplay my hand: a lot of people know about – and love – The Cowshed. So instead I’ll say this: The Cowshed deserves its formidable reputation for fine food.
with an icy chill in the air we hustle towards the entrance. Despite a substantial dining area outside, no one dares to brave the dank February weather. I don’t blame them. Our previous visit to The Cowshed happened to coincide with one of the hottest days of 2017: that evening we languished outside for some time
after our meal, basking in the warmth of the setting sun while sipping from as much of the restaurant’s top notch selection of wines, beers, spirits and liqueurs from around the world as was responsibly possible. As ever we are given a friendly welcome from owner Will Guy and escorted to our table. Occupying a
True to its name, it stands on the site of the former Clive Farm Dairy on Clive Road. In order to find the restaurant my partner Nicola and I veer off a quiet country lane, drive beneath a brick archway and into a courtyard where there is ample parking. The car park is level and you can park really close to the door. Darkness has already descended upon us and 74
town & village life magazine | march/april 2018
choice corner position, we set about checking out the sympathetically restored restaurant space. A wellexecuted mix of contemporary meets trad-rural is my best effort. It’s kinda rustic. An intimate number of tables sit beneath some fantastic exposed ceiling beams. There’s quirkiness on the walls in the way of cartoon cows yet, refreshingly, the restaurant isn’t trying too hard to be hip. Music is chilled – I think I heard Frank Sinatra. We’re among the first to arrive (the restaurant opens tonight at 6.30pm) but we don’t feel awkward or out of place. Even though it’s a Wednesday night, I’m convinced the place will soon start to fill up – and it certainly does! Many diners come and go as we eat our way through three courses, which gives a pleasant buzz to the place. We order drinks, then we receive The Cowshed’s customary complimentary cups of soup – tonight it’s ‘Broccoli and Stilton’. Now I can’t speak for my girlfriend Nicola (who had already ordered soup for her starter!), but I appreciate this delicate amuse bouche. As well as this we both appreciate the subtle, faintly romantic ambience afforded to us by the lowlighting and overall snugness of the place. It’s interesting how the shifting seasons can create an entirely different mood: neither of us can remember quite the same cosiness on our last visit, which I can only attribute to the inclement conditions outside. Seasons, of course, matter a great deal to the kitchen in a restaurant such as this. Head chef Joe Whitehouse creates imaginative, modern British dishes, bursting with locally sourced ingredients all year round, but on the menu right now there’s much in the way of what I’d call hearty wintry favourites. ‘Roasted parsnip and apple soup with parsnip crisps and crispy croutons’ (£5.50) is Nicola’s choice; I go for ‘Breaded brie with cranberry compote’ (£6.50). My brie has been heated to optimum consistency, like creeping lava it makes its way from inside its breaded shell. The compote offsets its savoury flavour well and fizzes on my palate. Nicola’s soup balances its flavours well and is generously thick. And I should know: I couldn’t resist a taste. Service flows well, our waitress clearly knows the menu well and nothing is too much trouble. There’s a good amount of time between www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
each course, we never feel like we’re waiting for anything for too long. The mains arrive and it’s soon safe to say that our high expectations and fond memories from our previous visit have certainly been exceeded. Nicola receives a substantial prime cut of ‘8oz English fillet steak (£26.95) served with hand-cut chips, roasted vine tomatoes, pan fried mushrooms, crispy onion rings and a peppercorn sauce. Having it served medium rare, she tells me, is an excellent choice because it allows the meat to be loaded with flavour. ‘Pan roasted Gressingham duck breast with dauphinoise potatoes, braised red cabbage and a rich port jus (£19.25) is my choice. I’m not disappointed: in fact suffice it to say that this dish is a triumph of textures and flavour, a show of bravura from a well-oiled kitchen team. Expertly seasoned and cooked, the meat is tender and
flavoursome without being overegged. The almost caramelised red cabbage is amazing too. To round things off, we try ‘Cowshed cherry and amaretto cheesecake with cherry crumble ice cream’ (£6.50) and ‘Cowshed rich chocolate tart with salted caramel ice cream’ (£6.50), both of which go down well. Every plate, every morsel, every mouthful at The Cowshed is thoughtful, made with love and care, seasoned and flavoured to perfection, and presented like a piece of art. It is one of the best meals I have eaten – ever. The Cowshed Restaurant, Clive Farm, Pattingham, Wolverhampton WV6 7DU. For table bookings please call 01902 701888. www.thecowshedrestaurant.co.uk

Proud to Boast!
WORKING WITH ONE OF THE WORLD’S FOREMOST INJECTABLE SURGEONS For several years now, The Cottage Surgery has been working in partnership with one of the world’s foremost Injectable Surgeons, Mr Ash Labib. He is known in the UK for being at the ‘very cutting edge’ of providers of Injectable Medical Aesthetic Treatments. Surgeon Ash Labib is the UK Ambassador for Allergan, the originator and exclusive supplier of the genuine ‘Botox’ product. Used for medical treatments such as Hyperhidrosis, (excessive sweating), Migraine control, and the reduction of spasms in children Botox is now widely known as a way to reduce the signs of ageing. It was Ash Labib’s day job as the E.N.T. Surgeon at two of the Midlands’ premier NHS Hospitals, Russell’s Hall and New Cross, that inspired him to develop the use of Dermal Fillers, (another essential tool in the battle against the signs of ageing), for a very different treatment. Along with a very select few, Ash has developed the use of Dermal Fillers to provide Rhinoplasty (Nose jobs to you and me) and nasal Reconstruction. This pioneering new treatment can amazingly be completed in your lunch hour! Ash Labib does of course, utilise dermal fillers in the more traditional sense, i.e. filling those lines that occur through the natural ageing process, or to reduce scars left by acne, accidents or childhood diseases such as Chicken Pox. It is experience gained as a surgeon in the E.N.T. field that has led him
to develop nasal reconstruction without the need of a scalpel.
friends, family and work colleagues, but even strangers in the street.
Many people are unhappy with their nose shape, either being ‘born with it’ or, because of an accident, or illness. In any event, how we look, can have an effect on how others perceive us.
Using Ash’s non-invasive techniques, there are very rarely any telltale signs, and there’s no need to take time away from work. Many patients really value this ultimately discreet way of achieving their goal.
The usual remedy was to ‘go under the knife’ and undertake invasive surgery. Not only does this traditional surgical intervention require the essential use of a general anaesthetic with the usual risks this entails, but also several weeks away from work or from social commitments. It also results in very obvious and substantial bruising with the possibility of scarring, temporary or otherwise, post treatment aftercare, and sometimes the need for additional corrective surgery. All invasive surgery carries with it the risk of infection as we all now know with the rise of super bugs such as Clostridium Difficile, (known as C-Diff in the press/media) however good the surgical resources are. Ash’s skills in utilising dermal fillers in place of the scalpel usually remove ALL of the above downsides. Very often Ash can provide the desired aesthetic results in under half an hour, and virtually always within the time we take for our lunch break. Genuinely, a good percentage of his patient’s leave his treatment room and go straight back to work. Some patients not only choose to use Ash’s filler-based expertise to avoid the above issues, but also because they feel embarrassed by their desire to remodel this important facial feature. They know the associated bruising will be evidence of surgery, to not only
The Cottage Surgery offers Ash’s services because they are aware that his skills in the use of both wrinkle relaxing injections and Dermal Fillers is second to none in the UK. Ash’s skill was initially brought to the attention of the Surgery through his international training and teaching business, where he is able to spread the word on his development of filler-based Rhinoplasty. The Surgery is confident that you can benefit from his 22 years of E.N.T. experience, years of Medical Aesthetic injectable treatment development, and innate understanding of his patients’ requirements. “Amazingly, due to our special partnership with Surgeon Ash, we are able to offer entirely FREE CONSULTATIONS, for his patients, during which you will be medically assessed by him and be able to tell him of your aesthetic concerns. Please also note that all consultations held at The Cottage Surgery come with no obligation to have treatments following your consultation, and are also entirely free of charge. Worthwhile peace-of-mind. We do ask for a small deposit to advance book and secure your consultation, but this is returned directly to you on the day.” To book a free and no obligation consultation with Ash Labib, call us on 01384 940497 or visit our website www.cottage-surgery.co.uk
Before and after pictures of one of Ash's patients - without the use of a scalpel! “Ash, I came to see you after I had Rhinoplasty 10 years ago, abroad. I was very unhappy with the results. But when you performed the non-surgical Rhinoplasty on my nose, it was an amazing result which has changed my nose on the outside to my desired shape, and gave me all the confidence and reassurance from the inside as well! I thank you so much for the revolutionary treatment.” Chris

Is my vision good enough for driving? Studies suggest that up to one in five middle aged drivers are taking to the road knowing their eyesight is not as good as it should be.
Even a small prescription with a good quality antireflective coating or specific glare reducing lenses, such as EnRoute, can make night driving much more comfortable. Designed specifically for motorists these lenses, either single vision or varifocal, have specifically developed glare filters and optional contrast enhancing filters to significantly reduce glare from oncoming traffic and enhance contrast in low light conditions, like rain and fog.
It is just common sense to ensure that your eyesight is good enough to enable you to drive safely. If it isn’t, you may be compromising your insurance and potentially breaking the law.
Polarised sunglasses, such as Maui Jim or Ray Ban are fabulous as they instantly eliminate the glare of the sunlight reflected off the road, giving you better visibility.
The DVLA will allow you to drive up to any age, provided that you still have good enough reaction times and clear eyesight. Even those with glaucoma or cataracts won’t necessarily have a problem if the two eyes together give good enough clarity and a wide field of vision. To meet the most basic DVLA standard for driving, you must be able to read a modern number plate from 20 metres. However, regular eye tests are crucial to ensure that the full standard is being met.
At Taylor Biddle, you will find a huge selection of stylish eyewear and lenses to suit all budgets and our dispensing team will spend however long it takes and provide valuable advice to help you to make the right choice.
For older drivers, it is vital to ensure that your glasses or contact lenses are up to date and it’s a good idea to have a spare pair of glasses in your vehicle too. In France and other countries, for example, a driver must have a spare pair in the car by law! Night driving is certainly more demanding than driving during the day, particularly for older drivers who are still legal to drive without glasses, but struggle with glare at night.

Great looking legs for the summer If you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. Having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort.
If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal.
VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.
During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.
Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and women being affected equally.
Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For further information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk

A mAnuAl of YoU!
When you buy a piece of electrical equipment, it comes with a manual to explain what it is, how to use the controls, how to get the best from it and, possibly more important, what NOT to do with it!
In short - a manual of them.
Unfortunately, the most unique piece of electrical equipment you will ever use, never came with a manual or care instructions – your brain. You have had to muddle along through life, picking up hints and tips along the way, and working out for yourself how to use this intricate machine. If that wasn’t bad enough, it comes with a couple of comedians called conscious mind and unconscious mind; they’re a hoot when they get going! How different would your life be, if you had a manual of YOU? It would explain about why you do the things you do, behave the way you behave and how to make changes to improve your life. When I take on a coaching client, this is exactly what we create together. I work with that person to help them ask questions of themselves that will root out the behaviours, thoughts and beliefs that are deep seated within their system. It’s a fascinating journey for both of us; I never know quite what we will discover. It’s a journey that often contains light bulb moments and tears; joy as well as sadness.
If you have been reading previous articles, coaching may not have been something that you recognised as part of my job. When I work with someone who has an issue, it’s often more involved than just one thing. If it has been impacting on those around them, my client may need some help to recognise this and how to repair situations or relationships that the issue had made difficult. It’s also worth mentioning that coaching isn’t just for professionals and business people. If you want to learn something new, you find a teacher or expert to show you what to do. If life isn’t working for you, you feel stuck, bored or without purpose, exploring opportunities with an expert is just good old common sense! A great tool for looking at different aspects of your life is called The Wheel of Life. It’s a classic coaching tool and you can find lots of examples on Google. If your not sure if it’s the right one, just email me (contacts below) and I will send you a PDF you can use.
As the name suggests, it’s a wheel, with different sections. Name your sections to suit the areas of life that are relevant to you; Home, Work, Family, Social etc and don’t forget to put YOU in a section! Number the spokes 1 – 10, with ten (rim of wheel) being very happy and 1 (centre point) being not good at all. Give thought to each section and how you feel about this part of your life. Draw a line in each section at the level you feel is appropriate. When you have filled all sections, join them up, how bumpy is your life? This highlights areas to improve and areas that are ok. If you want to use this as a guide to creating a better life, choose only two areas at a time, or you will overwhelm yourself and give up.
“If you think your life has lost its sparkle, or you feel something is missing, maybe there is something holding you back, stopping you from seeing things clearly. If this is you, it may help to share that with someone and get tools and techniques to make the changes you didn’t feel capable of doing on your own. I specialise in helping people clear personal blocks and issues that stop them from living a life of fun and fearlessness.” Sue Wilkinson
What do I do? I work with issues that stem from unconscious habits and behaviours. I coach my clients through processes that help them find a solution and guide them towards a brighter future.

INSURED PATIENT HITS THE BULLSEYE
W I T H C ATA R A C T S U R G E R Y
A delighted West Midlands Hospital patient has used her private health insurance to hit the bullseye for the eye surgery she needed. Gwen Herbert visited the private hospital for cataract surgery in both eyes and used her insurance to help fund the treatment. The 87-year-old was made aware of the need for surgery following a visit to her local optician. She was able to get an appointment for surgery quickly with eye specialist Mr Velota Sung after the hospital and consultant were put forward as one of the options by her insurance company Bupa. Gwen has visited West Midlands Hospital previously for treatments so had no hesitation in returning for the eye surgery she needed. Bupa is one of the leading healthcare specialists and provides private healthcare insurance for patients up and down the UK. Gwen of Kingswinford, said: “The hospital is like a second home for me and I know a lot of the staff so as soon as Bupa gave Gwen Herbert used her private health insurance for cataract surgery in both eyes.
West Midlands Hospital offers a range of eye treatments, including cataract surgery. Herbert used her private health insurance for cataract surgery in both eyes.
me a choice, there was only one place I wanted to go for surgery. “I’ve been paying into my health insurance since I was 50 so it’s approaching 40 years now since I started. “I thought about cancelling it at one point but my husband told me to carry on paying for it because I never knew when I might need it. “I’ve used my insurance at West Midlands Hospital a few times before so it has always been very useful and this latest time when I’ve needed the cataracts procedures has been no different.” West Midlands Hospital, based in Halesowen, offers a wide variety of treatments including Cosmetic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Eye Surgery and Spinal Surgery. There are many benefits to insured patients including fast and flexible appointment times, a consultant who stays with the patient throughout the course of treatment and singe en-suite rooms.

Individual pre-assessments and priority discharge are also beneficial to patients who use their insurance. Gwen visited the hospital on separate occasions for the cataract surgery on both eyes and stayed on the hospital ward for a night after the operations to give her time to recover before returning home. She says she would have no hesitation in recommending the hospital and private health insurance to other patients. She said: “West Midlands Hospital is a first-class hospital and service and I feel it has been a privilege to be treated there as an insured patient. The surgery and whole process all went very smoothly. “I stayed overnight after the operations and the staff couldn’t do enough for me. They are like friends to me and the consultant was excellent too. There is no other place I would rather go to.”

M i n d, B o dy a n d S o u l Exercise – some love it, some loathe it, and to some it’s a necessary task. But exactly how does exercise make us healthy – not just from a physical perspective, but mentally and emotionally too? Paycare, a not-for-profit Health Cash Plan provider based in Wolverhampton, is passionate about supporting those across the region to benefit from optimum health and wellbeing in all areas. And with research suggesting that many adults spend more than seven hours a day sitting down either at work, on transport, or in their leisure time, the organisation has put together some valuable practical advice and guidance on the subject of exercise… 1. Reduces Likelihood of Major Illnesses | It can reduce our risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer by up to 50%! And, it can lower the risk of premature death by up to 30%. (1) 2. Improves our Bone and Muscle Strength | Being physically active (and this can be as simple as walking) can improve our bone and muscle strength, and as a result, reduces the risk of falls and fractures, protects against osteoarthritis, as well as acting as a pain relief for musculoskeletal disorders. 3. Makes us Feel Happy | Exercising has been shown to increase concentrations of the chemical norepinephrine in the body – which moderates the brain’s response to stress. 4. Prevents Dementia | All forms of physical exercise boost the chemicals in the brain that support and prevent degradation of the hippocampus. In fact, researchers (2) have found that walking for just 20 minutes a day boosts memory and improves overall brain function. 5. Provides a Better Night’s Sleep | Exercising can make us physically worn-out in the short-term, but you’ll benefit from a much deeper night’s sleep – and feel well-rested 110
so that you’re alert and raring to go the next morning! 6. Helps us Become More Focused | A study by the University of Bristol (3) found that employees who exercised before work or at lunchtime were more motivated and were able to deal with stress more effectively. 7. Helps Us Lose Weight | There are links between the carrying of excess weight and the onset of type 2 diabetes, development of heart conditions and other serious illnesses, not to mention increased pressures on our joints and bones. Exercising pumps more oxygen into our blood, with our hearts in particular one of the best recipients. Kevin Rogers, CEO of Paycare, explained: “These are just a few of the benefits that exercise can bring to our health - emotionally, physically and mentally. Whether you’re currently sedentary and want to get more active, or you currently indulge in regular exercise but want to improve your fitness level, there’s no time like the present to start making a positive difference. “We also know that while this all sounds great, our lives are very busy and often see us pulled in many different directions – whether it’s work, children, family, or emergencies. And, it isn’t usually at the top of our list of priorities either, so it’s no wonder that many of us struggle to fit it in amongst our other commitments.”
• Do some sit-ups, a plank, or tricep dips on the sofa while the adverts are on the TV • At work, stand up every hour and walk around the office (and see colleagues face-to-face!) • Encourage ‘walking meetings’ at work • Walk up and down the stairs 10 times – just because! • Park the car further away than you normally would • Whilst cooking or waiting for the microwave to ping, do some jumping jacks, lunges, or jog on the spot • While the kettle is boiling, why not add some squats? • Add a stability ball to your desk chair (it’ll strengthen your core muscles) • Take calls standing up The Paycare team has developed a guide focused on the benefits of walking – if you fancy a free copy, please email marketing@paycare.org (1) NHS Live Well | https://www.nhs.uk/ Livewell/fitness/Pages/whybeactive.aspx (2) Journal of Alzheimer’s disease (3) Bristol Study | http://www.bristol. ac.uk/news/2008/6063.html

Switching your ISA is easy, so why don’t more people do it? Are people missing out by not switching their ISA? We swap our car and home insurance every year, and even our current accounts can be switched within 7 days – so why does the 5th April (end of the tax year for permitted ISA subscriptions) not make it in to our diaries? It’s possibly a perception that there are 100 forms or a list of hoops that must be jumped through before your ISA could be considered for transfer from one provider to another. That’s a myth! In the most part, a couple of short forms are all it takes and the provider you are transferring to takes care of everything, they even contact the existing provider. Dudley Building Society requests are progressed within 24 hours from receipt so it won’t be long until the transfer is complete and you are ready to continue to save in the 18/19 tax year. The range of ISAs available across the market provide many choices for individuals with different financial circumstances, so no one should be afraid to go and discuss the possibilities with their local bank or building society. In most cases, and especially in that of Dudley Building Society, there are friendly, knowledgeable advisers that are on hand and happy to discuss what accounts may be best suited to someone’s specific saving requirements. The Society’s ISA range includes a 45 day notice, one and five year fixed, instant access and junior account options as well as loyalty ISAs for existing Society members.
ISA Application and ISA Transfer Authority forms can be downloaded at www.dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk/savings If you would like some more information on the above you can speak to one of our friendly Customer Service Advisers at Dudley Building Society on 01384 231414 or visit dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk

Instantly recognisable from his role on the Channel 4 show First Dates, the suave Frenchman is renowned for his commitment to customer care and the importance of service to every business, not just the hospitality industry.
“Fred Sirieix is the epitome of excellent customer care, a quality on which we pride ourselves here at Higgs, as it is integral to all that we do.
Fred told Higgs he is looking forward to sharing his service experiences with them. “The organisations out there that are achieving and sustaining growth year after year are those that have placed customer service at the heart of their strategic plans. “It is service, and the relationship it allows them to build with their 114
“I look forward to helping you to inspire your people to the best possible client service.” Paul Hunt, Managing Partner at Higgs & Sons, said it was a hugely exciting new relationship for Higgs.
“Putting our clients at the heart of everything is extremely important to us, and we hope that Fred’s insight and experience will help us maintain our reputation for first class standards of customer care.
Later this year Fred will deliver a service masterclass at Higgs’ Waterfront Business Park headquarters in the heart of the Black Country, entitled ‘What does good service look like?’ Paul Hunt added: “Good customer service is the lifeblood of any business and we are excited to have Fred on board to help us enhance our customer journey.” Fred is General Manager of the Michelin Star restaurant Galvin at Windows at the London Hilton Park Lane, and has recently published a book, Secret Service, which lifts the lid on the restaurant world.
“Never a firm to simply stand still and always seeking a point of difference, we also hope that working with Fred shows Higgs & Sons for the firm we are: individual, independent, trendsetting.” town & village life magazine | march/april 2018

Grammar School
Few things play a bigger part in a school’s success than its staff, and Wolverhampton Grammar School’s wide range of initiatives to improve staff development and opportunities are truly impressive. Projects include a fund to support postgraduate training, research grants for teachers and a review of staff engagement in all strategic planning, as well as new CPD opportunities to help early career development, and media and external relations training. Comments in the latest staff survey demonstrate how this has paid off: “When you have a young family and spend most of your time at work, it’s important to enjoy coming into work, find your role rewarding and see you can make a difference”; “this is the best school I have ever worked in”; and “the environment we

work in is first rate and I believe the senior team will take the school to even greater heights”. This was just one area where Wolverhampton showed TES judges it could meet the criteria of “demonstrating excellence in strategy and direction”. Low student fees, an excellent ISI inspection report, the depth of community outreach and the achievement of pupils all confirmed this senior leadership team as a worthy winner. Kathy Crewe-Read, Head of Wolverhampton Grammar School comments “The work of a great School has been recognised by TES. To be selected as the best of the best by our peers and industry experts is a great testament to the hard work and commitment of every member of our community.” Philip Sims, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Wolverhampton Grammar School added “For me, there is an undoubted link between being judged “excellent” in all categories of the School’s activities by the Independent Schools Inspectorate last year and our Senior Management Team being recognised as the best team nationally by the Times Educational
has won ‘Senior leadership team of the year’ at the prestigious Tes Independent School Awards
Supplement this year. Our Head and her team illustrate outstanding leadership every day, ensuring that we provide the very best education for all our Students.” The TES judges said: “This was a category with a number of really creative strategic initiatives from a wide variety of schools in different contexts. The judges chose Wolverhampton Grammar School because it was clear that a closely knit team was addressing with real care many aspects of school life which directly impacted on the experience of teachers. “The personal, and apparently voluntary, testimonials from staff about their love of working in the school were also significant in the judges’ choice.” Winners attended a black-tie event at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, hosted by author, broadcaster, actor and entertainer Gyles Brandreth, where more than 400 attendees celebrated all that is outstanding in independent schools. As a Preparatory School, preparing girls for a variety of senior school entrance examinations is always an integral part of our curriculum. In Upper School, we prepare the girls for both selective and nonselective senior schools which are either fee paying or state funded. In addition, we aim to assist parents to choose from the range of senior schools available and find the school which will enable each girl to find the very best senior school for her as an individual. We consider that it is only when your daughter reaches Year Six that the time has come to begin the decision making process about which senior school will be right for her. When your daughter reaches www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
ten or eleven years old, you will be aware of how she has developed and will be in a position to select a senior school that is best suited to her personality, interests and academic abilities. Parents who choose ‘all through’ schools (2 years old to 18 years old or 7 years old to 18 years old) are essentially making this decision many years earlier than necessary; when no parent can foretell how their child will develop. (Without a ‘prep’ school in the area, the boys, are sadly, are not as fortunate as the girls and therefore have no option but to make this decision earlier at the end of Year Two—and we are here to support with this too.) ‘Creating Choice at 11+’ is not just an advertising slogan or strap line. From April in Year Five through to March in Year Six and beyond if necessary, we work closely with pupils and parents to make this a reality. For example,
we must offer our congratulations to Sachkirat Bhambra who has recently heard that she has been offered a joint Music and Academic Scholarship for Shrewsbury High School. This is in addition to her offer of places at St Dominic’s Grammar School (Performing Arts Scholarship awarded), King Edward VI High School Edgbaston and Wolverhampton Grammar School. She has also received letters from Queen Mary’s, Newport Girl’s High School, Wolverhampton Girl’s High School and Birmingham Grammar Schools Consortium indicating that her scores in both 11+ exams suggest that she should consider entry into a ‘state grammar school’ as an option. This is very impressive - I think Sachkirat and her parents will have a very difficult decision to make in March – spoilt for choice! 119

Sasha (3rd from right) with the friendly Lexus team
A clean machine
from Lexus Wolverhampton As the motor industry comes to terms with Government plans to steer drivers away from dirty diesels, Rob Taylor drives the new Lexus NX at Lexus Wolverhampton – a vehicle you just can’t buy with a diesel engine – and learns the meaning of the Japanese word, ‘Omotenashi’.
Happily NOx is no issue for the new NX and I’m very glad about this because, without being in any way eco-militant, I am vaguely interested in its impact upon our nation’s health. Where NOx is very bad, the NX is very good: it does without the piety of parent company Toyota’s
Prius and yet it is just as noble in its design ethos and execution. A self-charging hybrid battery allied to a 2.5 litre petrol engine forms the basis of the Lexus Hybrid Drive, which is – in this case four wheel drive, but available as front wheel drive too – able to offer drivers a
It’s refreshing to drive a vehicle that is unblemished by the noxious stigma of diesel. Ever since news broke of Volkswagen’s ‘defeat device’ scandal, diesel cars have been in the spotlight and it turns out that despite New Labour’s assurances back in 2001, the millions of oil burners on our roads are still parping out all kinds of evil. Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are chief among culprits. 122

brand almost always being top in ‘driver satisfaction’ surveys, by the countess awards it has won over the last 25 years and by my own experiences at Lexus Wolverhampton.
smooth, quiet power delivery that is particularly user-friendly in and around town. Capable of running at times entirely on electric power, the NX sometimes consumes no petrol and produces zero emissions at all. Of course when you do need to put the hammer down and scoot out of trouble, the CVT transmission facilitates easy progress to petrol power and official emission numbers are very encouraging at 121g/km. Company car users should take note of this. The NX is an accomplished cruiser that suffers little in the way of wind or tyre noise; it copes ably with corners despite its high rideheight and is serenely comfortable across every surface. I’m sure it would be decent off-road as well although I’d be loathe to take it to a field for fear of tarnishing the handsome paintjob and posh alloys. Where the NX really shines is where most of us want it: inside. The bold and daring cockpit is leagues above even this most expensive NX Hybrid 300H Premier VVT-I 4WD’s £46,040 price tag. I’ve driven Maserati’s with cheaper interiors. Like any Apple store, it’s a case of one premium product bumping up against another – Mark Levinson sound system with 14 speakers, a Head-up Display system etc – because the NX Premier is the ultimate NX for looks, refinement and comfort.
driving aids make this vehicle really stand out, even amid stiff German competition. There’s lots of good stuff as-standard lower down the range as well, starting at an entry level of just under £35,000. This is not a German car where everything comes as an optional extra, even the air in the tyres. There’s much in the way of style too: angular creases and slashes provide rakish good looks which, unusually, don’t impact upon space inside because despite the sloping roofline headroom is ample. I really like this car: it’s not expensive even though it feels it, it’s frugal (average fuel consumption is listed at 54.3 mpg combined) and yet frivolous (who doesn’t love Head-up displays?!). In fact you might even say that it is the premier choice in a world over-stuffed with preening SUV contenders. And there’s more: ‘Omotenashi’, in fact. What’s that? In a nutshell it means that when you buy a Lexus you’re treated like family. This rapport between customer and dealer is supported by the
From the moment you enter the gleaming, modern Bilston Roadshowroom, you breathe in a friendly atmosphere, alive with expert support and knowledge, as well as a palpable buzz about the brand. Every one of the team here is clearly passionate about their work and their place within the Lexus family. They enthuse about Lexus in a way that is almost infectious. And no one brims with more passion than General Sales Manager, Sacha Noble: his encyclopaedic knowledge of Lexus is matched only by his enthusiasm to build and maintain a strong bond with both his customers and the community. He tells me about one customer who just recently returned to Lexus after a long stint away from the brand. It turns out that he was persuaded back into the fold shortly after Sacha took over at Lexus Wolverhampton. By what you wonder? Well, essentially by Sacha and his team. As I’ve always believed: people buy cars, but people also ‘buy’ people…. their personalities, their charisma. And with so much on display here, I’m sure there’ll be many, many more sales to come. The NX may be a powerful advocate for Lexus, but the folks at Lexus Wolverhampton go one better. Lexus Wolverhampton, Bilston Road, Wolverhampton WV2 2QE. Porsche Centre Wolverhampton
Wins ‘New Retailer of the Year’ at Industry Awards
Steph McGovern, BBC presenter Business and Finance, Simon Priest, Principal Porsche Centre, Mark Gow, Sales Director, DSG Finance.
Local Porsche retailer Porsche Centre Wolverhampton was last night named ‘New Retailer of the Year’ at the Automotive Management (AM) Awards. Recognising best practice across the automotive industry, the awards are held annually and attract a high calibre of entry.
Undoubtedly the cars are the stellar stars of the landmark showrooms, but their defining clean-line elegance is reflected in the prestigious build project and its distinctive architectural design. It is a place to browse at leisure without the irritating trespass of sales people. “You’ll not find any of my sales executives chasing after customers in the showroom. It doesn’t work like that here. No-one gets jumped on. If they need help, customers are introduced to a sales executive. It’s a very relaxed customer experience,” says Simon.
The centre, that has floor space for 30 cars in the showroom and room for more than 100 outside, offers a Direct Dialogue analysis bay where owners can receive on-the-spot diagnosis by a trained Porsche technician prior to any necessary work being undertaken, a 16-bay workshop and dedicated MoT bay. In addition, there is a service loan fleet, and local collection and delivery of cars needing service and repairs. Porsche Centre Wolverhampton opened in April 2016 and just 12 months later was one of the most successful Porsche Centres in the network, and currently celebrates a more than 95% customer satisfaction rate in both sales and service thanks to a hardworking and dedicated team.
Porsche Team, Wolverhampton
The team attended a glittering black-tie awards ceremony, where they were awarded for their hard work and a successful first year of trading. Centre Principal Simon Priest commented: “We’re all over the moon to have won the New Retailer of the Year category. I’m so proud of the team at Wolverhampton and the incredible hard work they’ve put in to make the centre a success and it’s fantastic that the industry has recognised that too. We all had a great night and look forward to another year of delivering top service for our customers.” 124

to prove that you don’t need to buy BMW to get driving excitement from your family-friendly crossover.
This is no mean feat as only rarely can a manufacturer drop a new model without it falling short in some way – big or small. As with smartphones, there’s always an update or two before we see a bona fide contender, ready to take on the established order. And because car development takes place so painfully slowly in this super-quickfast digital age we’re usually left waiting for years before we can buy the product we’ve wanted all along.
Unsurprisingly the F-Pace is rearwheel-drive for most of the time (unless you want a four-wheeldrive set-up, and even then it’ll operate only on a part-time basis) and that explains the fun factor. It won’t win any drag races, nor will it take corners like a Premiership footballer but it will impress with how – even with the most limp-wristed lump beneath the bonnet – it moves its 1.7 tonnes of bulk around towns and cities.
Yet here’s Jaguar’s F-Pace, fresh out of the box, and already a big hit. To put it into perspective, BMW has been tinkering with its X5 for nearly 20 years and it’s still not as good. Even Volvo’s XC90 needs to watch out. I’m sure sister company Land Rover has helped Jaguar a lot, after all this rough and tumble division has been giving us highriding 4x4s for millennia. However, they definitely haven’t helped out with the styling of the F-Pace or with the interior. The Jaguar is hugely good looking, boasts a classy cabin, and goes a long way
You can get into one of these for just over £35,000; then go all the way north of £70,000. Engines range from this, the most sensible – and popular – choice for UK roads, the 237 bhp 2.0 litre diesel, up to a fruity supercharged 375 bhp V6 petrol. Pulling power is ample across all options although diesel still does it best in most cases due to some hefty torque numbers and this, when allied to the real-world prospect of getting over 35 mpg at the pumps, should prove persuasive despite growing anti-diesel sentiment.
The interior is largely faultless. Classy materials and easy-tooperate buttons are mated with a bright, airy cabin that can comfortably carry five adults. The cutting edge InControl Pro infotainment system can be optioned with a large 10” touchscreen which functions much like an iPad. It’s intuitive and pretty responsive, and with its ‘dual-view screen’, driver and passenger can each watch different functions at the same time (satnav for one, TV for the other). Big on boot space as well – bigger even than Jaguar’s XF Sportbrake – the F-Pace is an enormously practical and stylish modern day tool. It looks vaguely hostile from the front with its big grille; its coupe-like side profile and F-Type-inspired tail-lights set it apart from Germanic ubiquity. With seats this comfy, and a Cathedralquiet ride, you’ll almost never feel fatigued at the wheel, nor ever will you ever wonder if you made the right decision by buying British. Overall it’s a winner – and first time out of the gate too. Already its rivals are struggling to keep pace.
