We have something to admit to you... for the last 15 years, we’ve had an unfair advantage! It’s not that we open later than everyone else so we can fit around you - although we do! It’s not that we offer every aspect of dentistry under one roof - although we do! It’s not that we offer 0% on our treatments - although we do!

Willows Dental & Implant Centre

Dental Tourism Dental tourism is starting to become more popular. I understand it, get a holiday to Thailand, Turkey or Budapest and have a brilliant white smile at the end of it. It can be a very attractive proposition. And don’t worry this isn’t one of those articles that I put out to convince people it’s a bad thing. We have seen some clients who have had some fantastic work done abroad; unfortunately we’ve also seen the flip side with dental work that has not gone so great. Really, the point of this article was to to say we’re here to help.

A lot of practices, in fact most, turn away clients that have had work done abroad. We at Willows Dental & Implant Centre have set up a network of translators that can communicate with clinics across the world to find out what treatment has been done and with what materials and suppliers. So if you’ve had some work done abroad and perhaps it’s not going as well as you were promised or you’d just like some maintenance, we’re here to help.

usually isn’t too much of a problem to put things right, but if you need to see that Dentist again, is this going to be difficult to return to that country? What is quality of the Lab Technicians work? In dentistry the Dentist prepares the teeth or places the implants, but the Lab ceramicist makes the veneers or the crowns to go in the implants. As you may notice on some of the popular reality shows, sometimes the smile makeovers carried out are not in keeping with the face. The ceramicists we use try to keep the teeth in beautiful harmony with the face, to make sure you continue to have the confidence to eat, smile, kiss and connect for many years to come. Our point is whatever happens we are here to help, as we have helped thousands of clients. If you would like any advice or to book in to have anything checked, just give us a call. Our team are ready to help.

If a client is dead set on going abroad for their dental treatment, we’d ask our clients to simply think ahead. Have you had enough time to think about your treatment? If you have a plane to catch and a tight schedule, it would make sense to be wary about being pressured into committing to treatments before you feel ready. Holidays come and go but the effects of dental treatment stick around for a lot longer. Have you been able to ask questions? Most dentists are really good at communicating with clients about treatments and different options; we even have Treatment Coordinators for this here at the Willows. If you don’t feel you can ask questions, or that you are getting answers that satisfy your needs, you should be able to have a second opinion. Don’t be afraid to ask for one. What happens if things don’t work out? Dentistry is as much of an art as it is a science. No matter how skilled a Dentist is, sometimes things don’t go as planned. It

FROM THE EDITOR Received wisdom suggests that a spring editor’s letter should be full of references to frolicking bunnies, new-born-at-Easter chicks and lots of talk about the clocks going forward, as well as the thinlyveiled threat of a bit of proper sunshine. A Design Led Family Bathroom in Halesowen Creating a new bathroom can be something that many competent DIYers want to take on for themselves but there are many benefits to working with an independent retailer, as the experience of Neil and Sue from Halesowen illustrates. Neil had previously undertaken work in the family home but when it came to updating the bathroom, he chose to visit the showroom, wanting to benefit from some new design ideas. “I was not disappointed by my visit to Roman Bathrooms. The showroom has a selection of lovely displays with plenty of the latest and most innovative products,” says Neil. “Sue and I were impressed with the design ideas that Caroline and Claire presented, which included special design touches that we would never have thought of, and their experience was evident in the design options they presented.” The couple wanted to update the room, replacing the bath with a modern shower to make it feel more spacious. We chose wall-hung fixtures to help create a feeling of space and a neutral colour scheme, to keep it looking crisp and clean. Recessed shelving provides space for essentials, without them cluttering the space, and the addition of strategically placed lighting adds ambiance. “We love the lighting,” says Neil. ”We can control just how much light we want to add, with alcove lights and spotlights and the high-tech mirror has surround lights that can also be adjusted. “The quality of all the new products is perfect and the installation team were very professional. They kept us informed of progress and made suggestions along the way, which have enhanced the design. “We are delighted and feel we have gained so much more by working with Roman Bathrooms, we would definitely recommend Roman Bathrooms to others.” 08 8

The children from Belarus at Wyre Forest Canoe Club.

This is a completely voluntarily run organisation which has been bringing children to the local area for the past 26 years.

The people of Chernobyl were exposed to radioactivity 90 times greater than the Hiroshima bomb. According to the UN, there is now a real threat to the gene pool of Belarus with second generation children even more likely to suffer side effects. It is currently estimated that it will take up to 400 years to rid Belarus of the bulk of the contamination but some areas will remain contaminated for up to 24,000 years.

facIng tax Increases

I have a great number of clients who have, over the years, purchased property to let and to maximise returns through gearing taken a buy to let mortgage. This was a great way to hold a property portfolio as all mortgage interest payments were tax deductible. However, in 2016, we saw the implementation of some new tax rules that meant over the next four years, the amount of mortgage interest which could be offset from rental profit reduces. In this current tax year (2019/2020), landlords can offset 25 per cent of their mortgage interest from their rental profit. From April 2020, this reduces to zero. There is a tax credit relief available based on basic rate tax however landlords will have to pay income tax on all of the rental income 18

they receive meaning that many of them will pay more tax.

payments and still yield a generous profit to the landlord.

This new tax rule is going to change the landscape of the buy-to-let market.

A private landlord would typically complete a tax return each year and on it they would detail the income from their property portfolio and then detail all of their expenditures such as management fees and repairs, along with other expenses including the mortgage interest.

How it normally works For example, let’s say a landlord has five properties in their buy-to-let portfolio. The properties are worth about £700,000 in total however there are 5 lots of £100,000 interest-only mortgages, a total of £500,000. Let’s say the interest rate on each buy-to-let mortgage is 3%. The total interest-only mortgage payments each month would be £1,249 or £14,988 each year. Let’s say the income received on each property is £600 each month - in total this is £3,000 each month or £36,000 each year. Clearly we can see that despite the large amount of mortgage debt and mortgage payments that need to be paid, the rental income will fund these mortgage

Income tax on the rental income profit is then charged at the normal rate of income tax. But as you can guess, from April 2020, many private landlords with buy-to-let mortgages will simply pay more income tax on their rental income. With this same example, let’s say the interest charged on those buyto-let properties goes up to 6%. (I would imagine most people reading this would have experienced paying something close to that rate at some point in the past). In my example scenario, the mortgage interest payments would increase to £2,501 each month or £30,012 each year.

town & village life magazine | march/april 2020

This scenario looks a lot less attractive for a landlord. If they cannot offset interest-only mortgage payments from their rental income profit, this will result in significantly lower returns and then they will inevitably have to consider alternative options.

How will landlords adapt? Let’s say a landlord runs their property business through a company rather than as a private venture; would these new tax changes I mentioned above apply? The answer is no.

On the flip side companies do not have a capital gains tax (CGT) allowance so, when the property is eventually sold, corporation tax is paid on all the gain whereas individuals have an annual allowance this year of £12,000 so a couple owning a property jointly can make a gain of £24,000 with zero tax liability. My opinion is that for many years property has been seen by many as the “go to” investment however moving forward I no longer think this will be the case.

If a company owns the property portfolio then the tax which is paid on the profit of the business is corporation tax. At the moment, the corporation tax rate is 19% however this is going to drop to 17% in the next tax year (2019/2020) making the idea of holding properties within a limited company or specifically a SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) quite attractive. This is because a lot less tax will need to be paid which means a much greater net profit. I must caveat that any landlords who do decide to move their private property portfolio across to a SPV would need to take proper advice because there are lots of implications to consider including stamp duty, lending criteria for new mortgages and various other considerations. That said, at face value, it feels like these tax changes will nudge many landlords to move across to this type of model going forward. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

N.D.Walters

The Carpet and Flooring Experts Behind the small exterior of Sedgley-based carpet and flooring specialists, N.D. Walters, lies a vast 6,000 square foot warehouse that’s filled with the best brands in carpets and flooring, as well as an extensive range of budget designs. As owner, Nick Walters, explains:

And, there’s something to suit every home décor at the showroom:

“We supply all types of carpets, laminates, vinyls and rugs. We have a fantastic selection of Karndean, Amtico, Furlong, Quick-Step and V4 Wood flooring to choose from, as well as carpet ranges from leading manufacturers like, Axminster, Brintons, Greendale and Adams Carpets.”

“We cater for all styles and tastes - we have very traditional designs, as well as the most up-to-date and fashionable ranges.” There’s also an impressive selection of rugs to choose from too.

In fact, the family-run company has an impressive dedicated Karndean showroom: “We’re a Platinum retailer for Karndean and our extensive recently refurbished showroom is second in size only to Karndean’s itself.”

All of the company’s products are extremely competitively priced, as the business works closely with the Greendale Group, which is the largest carpet and flooring buying company in the UK. “Being a member of Greendale means that we can offer a huge range of products, but still compete in terms of price too, passing the savings on to the customer.” And there are always bargains to be had: “We have a lot of end-of-roll stock available all the time, so there are plenty of exciting prices to be found in store.”

20

“Rugs instantly give the home a really cosy and comfortable feel and can complete the look of your room perfectly.”

Earning an excellent reputation in the industry – and celebrating 43 years in business this year – N.D. Walters has become the premier choice for homeowners and commercial clients alike, who are looking for superior products and service. “We’ve got years of experience in the trade, as well as an expertly trained team, so we can offer our customers plenty of advice. We also have our very own team of expert fitters who take care of installation.”

The company also offer free home consultations and come highly recommended by the Carpet Foundation - an independent organisation who monitor and check on carpet retailers to ensure standards of quality and service. “We carry out a lot of insurance work across the entire West Midlands region and complete jobs for many different organisations – and completed a project at Himley Hall.” And N.D. Walters has also been featured on both DIY SOS and Cowboy Builders where they helped out two families by supplying the flooring that made their home transformation complete.

So, if you haven’t visited before, be sure to make a trip to N.D. Walters before you begin any home improvements this Spring - it’ll be well worth your while.

AWNINGS

Awnings can add shade for you both inside and out.

Their advantages are that they can, firstly, look so good when looking out from the inside of your home, and secondly shelter you from direct sunlight when sitting out on the patio. Under an awning you can also sit out in your garden when the weather is not quite so clement, so you can enjoy your garden all year round. Awnings can be tailor-made to suit your individual needs. Specialist companies will make them up to measure, usually of resin bonded acrylic which is fade-resistant and UV protected, in an enormous range of colours and modern patterns. Frames are made from rustfree, powder coated aluminium, which provides maintenancefree supports. They also come with the latest in remote control technology, so you are able to adjust your awning from your lounger. Awnings can be supplied with automatic sun and wind sensors so that

provided they have the correct tools and assistance with lifting.

Awnings can come with a range of night lights so you can enjoy a pleasant evening sitting outdoors, and these can also be operated from your remote control.

Most householders elect to have their new awning professionally installed. Depending on the property, it is normally recommended that the awning be at least 500mm wider on each side than the area to be shaded, with as deep a projection as possible. Awnings can be installed at almost any point but consideration must be given to the fact that you will want to walk underneath and allowances must be made for the opening of doors and windows when the awing is extended. It is recommended the awning is fitted at least 2.5 metres above ground level, the front when extended should be 2.0m from the ground.

It is advisable to have your awning professionally measured and installed. However there are DIY factory direct awnings available which can be installed by the buyer in a matter of a few hours,

Most manufacturers have a range of conservatory awnings, but their suitability will depend on the style of your conservatory. As the blind is fitted above the conservatory roof the noise from rain is greatly reduced and in summer provides a cooler shaded area in your conservatory.

Some awning manufacturers offer a 5 year guarantee on those they install and purchase prices are very competitive. If you haven’t before considered such a feature for your home, contact your local supplier and find out the unquestionable advantages of a patio or conservatory awning. town & village life magazine | march/april 2020

Pa r g e t e r s New furniture styles for spring If you’re busy updating, improving or redesigning your home interior this spring, you’ll no doubt be keen to find a selection of quality and contemporary furniture to complete the new look. And, there’s no better place to start your search than with a visit to Pargeters extensive showroom, that’s located in Stourbridge’s High Street. Displaying modern designs, from leading British brands, over three floors, there are looks to suit every home interior style. And, what’s more there’s an incredible 25% off most leading brands as part of the company’s amazing spring event. As Miles explains: “We have got lots of fantastic new displays at the showroom, ready for the new season, and we’re delighted to be able to offer our customers a substantial discount.” A change in direction has taken place over the last five years at the family-run store, which has

seen the business focusing on being an upholstery specialist that no longer sells bedroom furniture, curtains and carpets. Now instead, there is a brandnew department that specialises in Sherborne lift and rise beds, reclining chairs - which are all exempt from VAT - as well as sofas to match. With all of this and more you’re sure to find outstanding designs and style at affordable prices when you pay a visit. In fact, customers at Pargeters are always surprised by the independent stores’ low prices, as Miles explains: “Sometimes an established business and single store furniture shop can be deemed to be more expensive to buy from than larger group stores.

“But I can assure you that it won’t cost you to shop at Pargeters, very often we are cheaper and will price match the leading brands. We pride ourselves on offering the lowest possible prices combined with the highest standard of customer service.” Indeed, the store is renowned for its exceptional service and that’s why it has remained a firm favourite with locals, ever since its doors first opened over 90 years ago. Unlike their competitors, the staff at Pargeters aren’t on commission, which means their focus is entirely on helping you make the purchase that’s right for you – if, of course, you decide to buy from the company. “We don’t sell ‘add-ons’ – like finance or insurance, which some companies use to boost their profits,” adds Miles.

The company offers free delivery within a 50 mile radius and will also take your old items away free of charge. So, whatever you’ve got in mind for your home interior this spring, make it look amazing with the addition of a quality buy from Pargeters. 30

We look forward to some prolonged rain free days to allow these pitches to dry out. Two consecutive weekends were a washout in February. On the field the First XV are now on target to finish in the top half of National Two North and the Lions are just keeping free of the drop zone in their hard fought Midlands One West League. Two of their remaining matches are on a Friday night. The first away against Droitwich on March 20th and the second on 27th March at home against local rivals and league leaders Dudley Kingswinford. On the representative front we are hosting the British Police against the Royal Navy on April 1st. Paramount in our thoughts at the moment are the arrangements for our mid-May marquee weekend. On Friday May 15th we will be hosting our Corporate Lunch for about 1500 guests and on the Saturday our extravaganza May Ball. This year’s speakers at the lunch are John Inverdale the multi-sport commentator and pundit who is just completing his thirty third year of Five and Six Nations Rugby for the BBC and has spent a similar amount of time at Esher Rugby Club both as player, committee man, official and bartender. His foundation helps to fund research into the causes of MND and investigating potential cures and makes grants to sufferers of MND to enable them to live as full a life as possible. Brilliant bathrooms at Brierley Hill Bathrooms Whether you want your bathroom to be a haven of relaxation or simply a well-designed functional space, there’s no doubt that you’ll find the design that’s perfect for you at Brierley Hill Bath Warehouse. Established over twenty years ago, the business - that’s based close to both the Merry Hill Centre and Dudley town centre - has long been supplying and fitting bathrooms across the local area. Meeting the needs of both domestic and commercial clients alike, Brierley Hill Bath Warehouse has established a loyal client base and built an excellent reputation in the industry over the years. From an impressive showroom, that’s complete with products from leading brands like Simpsons, Clearwater and RAK Ceramics, the team are able to offer their customers an extensive range of suites that suit all budgets. Owner, Alec Price explains: “We’ve got something for every budget - whether it’s £4,950 or £34,000. There’s plenty of fitted bathroom furniture to take a look at in our showroom, as well as shower cubicles of all different sizes, and lots of bathroom accessories.” As well as selling direct from their showroom, Alec and his team offer a full design and fitting service for clients.

“Our team of expert fitters take care of all aspects of installation, from stripping out the old bathroom to plastering, tiling and of course, installing the new suite.” On average the fitting process takes between one and two weeks: “With one fitter the job will usually take two weeks to complete or with two fitters working the time frame can usually be halved to one week.” All of Brierley Hill Bath Warehouse’s fitters are highly skilled and experienced and complete every job to only the highest standards.

“We ensure excellent standards in everything we do and customer satisfaction is really important to us. Unlike many other businesses we don’t ask for any deposits upfront, we ask that our customers pay when the job is complete.” The company also has a unique safety treatment that will guard against any slips in the shower. “Some shower trays, baths and tiles can be extremely slippery, that’s why we have our Slip Not treatment available for those who are concerned about themselves or a relative having a fall in the shower.” Slip Not treatments can be used on any new or existing bath or shower tray in your home and are virtually invisible. When applied to a shower tray, bath or floor tiles, the Slip Not treatment provides a protective layer that helps to reduce the risk of injury from slips and falls. “We have done many Slip Not treatments in private homes as well as businesses, like retirement and nursing homes, schools, hotels and clinics.” So, whether you’re looking to find out more about protecting your loved ones in the shower or treating yourself to a brand new bathroom, Brierley Hill Bathrooms has got it all.

Preparation: 20 mins

Method

Cooking time: 3 hours

Heat the oven to 150C/fan 130C/gas 2.

Serves: 4-6

Heat a little of the oil in a large oven-proof pan.

Stew Ingredients

Lightly flour the pieces of braising steak and fry in small batches until well browned. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate.

2 tbsp oil 1kg braising steak, cut into large pieces 2 tbsp plain flour, well seasoned 3 onions, sliced 500ml Guinness 2 sprigs thyme

Dumpling Ingredients 75g butter, frozen and grated, or 75g suet 150g self-raising flour 1 small onion, grated 2 sprigs of thyme, leaves stripped and chopped Water for mixing

36

Add the onions to the pan and fry on a fairly high heat until they soften and tinge brown at the edges. Pour the Guinness into the pan, letting it bubble up, then return the meat to the pan along with the thyme. Cover the pan and transfer to the oven for 2-2 1/2 hours or until tender. The sauce will sweeten and thicken during the cooking time. Make the dumplings (towards the end of the cooking time) by mixing the grated butter or suet, flour, onion and thyme together and season well. Gradually add water to the dry ingredients until you have a soft dough. Divide into 12 balls. Place the dumplings on top of the casserole and return it to the oven, uncovered, for 25 minutes. Serve with shredded Savoy cabbage.

WORLD RENOWNED CARTOON ARTIST WAS BLACK COUNTRY’S BEST KEPT SECRET New book looks at the life of Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg, cartoon illustrator behind Korky the Cat and Desperate Dan. If you grew up in the 50’s or 60’s, then chances are that receiving your favourite comic was a weekly highlight. The Dandy, Beano and The Topper ranked amongst the most popular and were all produced by publishing house, DC Thomson. It may come as a surprise to know that one of Thomson’s premier artists lived and worked quietly in Langley, throughout his prolific career. Acknowledged by comic book aficionados as one of the greatest comic artists the UK has produced, a new book celebrating the life and work of Charlie Grigg has been published by Dr Brian Dakin and the Grigg family.

Dr Brian Dakin

40

Charlie Grigg, known to his friends as Chas, was the cartoon artist who drew legends such as Korky the Cat, Desperate Dan, Splodge, Foxy, Willy Nilly and The Red Wrecker amongst many others. Born and bred in the Black Country, Charlie’s flair for drawing became apparent at an early age and his passion for art stayed with him as he grew and left school to work in engineering. The book charts how he was encouraged by his wife Marge, to take the leap into full-time cartoon artistry at the age of 34. He continued to draw for DC Thomson for over 20 years, producing many of The Dandy’s summer and Christmas annual covers. It is estimated that in his lifetime, he produced over 10,000 illustrations and 1000 covers for

The Dandy alone. When he retired in 1983, he turned his hand to illustrating some of the famous ‘saucy seaside’ postcards found in souvenir shops up and down the British coastline. Produced by publishing company Bamforth, many a seaside holiday wouldn’t be complete without sending one of these iconic cards home and they are now collector’s items. In 2013, Charlie passed away at the age of 97. In his final years, he unfortunately suffered with dementia and although he may have struggled to recognise friends and family, he could still reproduce his famous illustrations perfectly. His work has inspired local poets, song writers and artists and a retrospective of his work was held at Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery. A Blue Plaque now adorns the school he attended as an infant in Rood End. A quiet and modest man, his family know that he would be a little shy but very proud that his work is finally receiving the recognition it deserves. The Life of Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg, The Black Country’s Best Kept Secret is 160 pages packed with anecdotes and memories from Charlie’s family and friends and also features his life story in his own words. It costs just £10 +PP with all proceeds going to The Alzheimer’s Society and other local dementia charities. It is available to order from www.charliegrigg.com.

Willows Dental Reaching New Heights As part of Willows Dental Charity and Community Program, Kirun, one of Willows long standing Dentists has visited Nepal, famous for its Himalayan Mountains for two weeks. Kirun made the amazing decision to travel to the Shree Mahendra High School, Neelkantha in the Dhading district. After studying for so long to get where she is today, and coming from a community who place a strong emphasis on serving and helping others, Kirun felt that doing this was one of many ways to give back. This was something Kirun has always wanted to do, an opportunity to provide healthcare to others less fortunate than ourselves in the UK, and to be

able to use her skills to assist others in need. Kirun also felt that this provided the opportunity to challenge herself and experience a different way of life. The trip was undertaken by the Oral Care for Developing Countries project. Due to the horrendous weather conditions, the roads leading towards the school where Kirun and the rest of the dental team were going to be located were severely damaged, this meant the route had to be taken on foot which ended in an incredibly difficult trek that took hours and hours! Due to the horrific damage to the roads, it was impossible for Kirun and the team to stay at a local B&B approximately 1 hour away as planned. Therefore, half of the team slept in the school library and the other half slept in tents on the school playground. Throughout their stay in Nepal, the team faced many challenging and upsetting scenarios. On day four, a heavily pregnant woman had walked for miles to reach Kirun, requiring urgent help as she was suffering with a severe dental abscess and was in extreme pain. This caused a lot of distress for the people who had been patiently waiting for days to be seen, as people were desperate to get to the front of the queue knowing their opportunity was coming to an end. On another day, the team travelled to a local family to treat their father who has been paralysed for 30 years, unable to leave his home. They performed an extraction whilst the patient lay on the ground on his stomach (the only position he was able to keep), next to a Buffalo! That evening, the family bought fresh buffalo milk to the camp as they were so grateful for the teams help. During Kirun’s stay in Nepal, she had the amazing opportunity to mentor Nepali dental students

44

and newly qualified Dentists – who acted as the team’s translators. They were also accompanied by three professional trekking guides who set up tents for the camp, kept a close watch on the team and cooked some of the best food Kirun has ever tasted in her life.

Throughout Kirun’s stay, the camp treated over 1,250 patients!! The team had originally set out to only see pupils of the school however; this turned into their families, the staff, and anyone else who turned up in desperate need of help. People were travelling from other villages as the news of the incredible team’s arrival had spread fast. Kirun saw how refined sugar is creeping its way in diets everywhere, not just in the West and the devastating effects this has on the mouths of children all over the globe. This really was the experience of a lifetime and Kirun would thoroughly encourage others to try something similar if they are able to, as this experience will show anyone the local community in a way that a hotel never could.

Dudley South Ladies Luncheon Club At the February meeting Chairman Ann Rogers welcomed 36 members for a 3-course lunch, the AGM and to hear speaker Mr. Vincent Raymond Barker talking about “Two French Ladies”. The AGM gave the Chairman the opportunity to thank the committee for their hard work and members who had donated flowers, said Grace and Vote of Thanks and hoped that 2020 would start the process of putting the Great back into Great Britain. Mr. Barker, a retired French teacher, wore his beret to give atmosphere to his talk about two special French ladies, namely Juliette Greco and Odile Lewis. Juliette, now in her 90s, had been a famous singer and actress and he illustrated this with slides and recordings of her songs. Her life had been very colourful, with a mother who worked for the French Resistance and was arrested, forcing Juliette and her sister to flee to Paris where they lived in poverty until the end of the war. Thankfully her talents led to her starring in both French and English films. Odile Lewis however was not famous but remarkably her sister and her survived alone in a remote farmhouse during the occupation. Her father was in security which enabled her to meet the Queen in France and again on a royal visit to Wolverhampton. She is still alive and lives in Penn, Wolverhampton.

The new speaker programme had been completed and would be issued in March when Dr. Kate Round will talk about the role of women in the glass industry, and in April Mr. Keith Cheetham will explain what the Black Country has to offer as a tourist destination. Names are now being taken for a coach outing to Trentham Gardens in May and a visit to the Mayor of Dudley’s Parlour in April. Meetings are held on the second Friday each month 12pm for 12.30pm at The Lodge, Wellington Road, Dudley. Visitors are most welcome and can attend 3 times before deciding to join. a real garden centre for real gardeners

Prepare for the growing season

Beware of sharp frosts in March and April that will spoil vulnerable plants and soft shoots – have some fleece handy and check the weather forecasts, if we’re likely to get a frost put the fleece over the tops of plants to protect them. open start spraying them fortnightly against black spot, mildew and aphids, best control is achieved by using two different products alternatively, so pests don’t build up a resistance to one particular chemical.

Dead head spring flowering bulbs as they finish, particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on and top dress with fertiliser, they’ll send the food back to the bulb and you’ll get a better display of flowers next year. Snowdrops can be split at this time of year into smaller clumps. Remember to dead head spring flowering bedding plants as well to encourage more flowers. Pansies in particular are a cold weather plant and the mild wet weather during the latter part of December did them no favours. Black spots on the leaves are a symptom of this mild weather. Remove as much as possible and keep plants on the dry side if you can. As the spores can lie dormant in the ground avoid planting pansies/ violas in the same position for 12 months. Plants can be sprayed with systemic fungicide to discourage disease spread. Many of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up – Lilies and Gladioli. Always

plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Lilies, especially Tree Lilies benefit from being started off in pots and planted outside once growing strongly. They don’t reach their full potential in height for a couple of years but are well worth the wait. Dahlias can be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse.

With so much damp weather over the last few months there’s going to be plenty of moss in lawns. We have in stock MO Bacter which is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns. This feeds the lawn over a 12 week period and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil and which when added to fertiliser will consume material like thatch and moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment. Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Plant your first and second early potatoes, followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears.

Rose pruning should be finished now, once the new growth has several sets of complete leaves

Recently, the company worked with Garden Designer, Jo Hobbs (no relation to Richard) to create a dream garden design for Hagley-based client, Sue Mcfarling.

This was a fantastic project to design and work on. It started as a totally blank canvas, which can be a tricky starting point but Sue wanted something with real impact and was totally receptive to my ideas. Richard and Duncan are brilliant at turning my designs into reality and this has been a great three way collaboration with them and Sue. I’m thrilled with the finished garden and more importantly Sue is too. And, Sue was thrilled with her new garden, as she explains: Jo Hobbs, my garden designer recommended Evenfield Ltd to construct my dream garden. Richard and his team worked tirelessly on this project, sorting out any teething troubles a new build can create quickly and efficiently, nothing was too much trouble.

So, whatever you’ve got planned, give the expert team at Evenfield a call today. • Landscape, Design and Build • Groundworks and Construction • Paving and Driveways • Fencing and Gates • Tree Work and Ground Clearance For further details please call: Richard on: 01746 781209 M: 07813 811 501 E: richard@evenfield.co.uk www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

service franchised companies simply cannot replicate.” Utilising their in-depth knowledge, the gardening experts at Michelle’s Garden Care provide seasonal lawn treatment plans which promote green, healthy lawn growth. “We use professional fertilisers, equipment and treatment and each aspect is carried out at the optimum time of the year for superb grass health and colour.” And, the company tackle moss and weed issues too: “Moss is caused by a combination of moisture in your lawn and weak grass. AFTER

Whatever the job, the team use the best equipment and work hard to ensure a fantastic result for every client. “We get great satisfaction in lawn renovations – transforming neglected lawns in poor health to lush green lawns for families to enjoy,” adds Michelle. Although it’s all too easy to neglect the health of your lawn with a little help from Michelle’s Garden Care you can give it a new lease of life. So, why not contact the team today?

State-ofthe-art technology comes to Blacks Vets, Dudley

Dr Girish Thakral tells us how Blacks Vets are making further investment in first class care, with the addition of a new CT scanner.

When it comes to your pet’s healthcare, the team at Blacks Vets are committed to providing a first-class service. We know that when we treat a pet, we look after a much-loved family member and their comfort and care is always our number one priority. We are therefore delighted to announce that from Summer this year, our Accredited Veterinary Hospital in Dudley, will be equipped with an on-site CT scanner, providing some of the latest imaging technology available today. CT is an abbreviation of Computed Tomography and is ranked as one of the most significant medical diagnostic developments of the last 50 years. Whilst both X-ray and CT scanning take pictures of internal body structures, with X-ray, the structures overlap. CT scanning takes pictures using multiple planes to create a cross sectional effect which helps vets easily identify different tissue types. In short, CT scanning provides far more detailed imagery than X-ray which makes diagnosis more accurate and reduces the need for exploratory surgery.

64

town & village life magazine | march/april 2020

There are numerous benefits to having this technology on-site. Primarily, it means that pets can be scanned quickly and without the need to transport them to another site when they are unwell or injured. The process is also very effective at detecting subtle lesions and tumors which improves outcomes for serious diseases such as cancer. Orthopaedic procedures benefit enormously from CT scanning thanks to the heightened detail they provide which is often not as easy to detect with conventional X-ray. The process also lends itself well to cases where pets have swallowed

something they shouldn’t have, making the identification and location of foreign bodies, easier to determine. When we can plan our surgical approach in advance through examination of clear imagery, we also minimise surgical time and risk. We are pleased to confirm that we will also be accepting referrals from other practices, meaning that pets from across the region can benefit from having this facility within close proximity. Fast and informed diagnosis improves outcomes for all kinds of medical issues and we are extremely proud to be able to offer this service to Black Country pets.

Protect your car with a parking post from Profence

There’s been a rise in car thefts from driveways in recent years and so, protecting your vehicle has never been more important. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to deter thieves and make sure that your car stays on your driveway, as Shane Gamble explains: “Here at Profence we’re really pleased to be able to offer our customers a range of parking posts which will serve to protect their vehicle” Although Profence are fencing experts they also install bollards for both domestic and commercial clients so moving into parking posts was a natural progression. “There are many options when it comes to parking posts: there are posts that fold down, lift out and also push into the ground and we supply and install them all.” Whatever your requirements the Profence team can help you find the parking post that best suits your needs. “A small driveway will only need one post located behind the vehicle whereas a larger driveway will need several posts strategically placed for proper protection.” 68

Installing a post is a really simple way to give you peace-of-mind, whether your leaving your car on your driveway overnight or whilst you’re away on holiday. “There is no doubt that a parking post is a real deterrent to thieves because it shows that the homeowner takes security seriously and is doing what they can to safeguard their vehicle frombeing targeted.” Of course, the presence of a post also ensures your driveway is kept clear: “Posts can be used to keep parking spaces free too, which is particularly useful for our commercial clients.” Whatever the client’s requirements the Profence team are always onhand to offer help and advice. “We help our clients find the solution that’s right for them so that they can protect their vehicle,” adds Shane.

So, whatever car you drive make sure that it is protected this New Year with the help of a parking post from Profence.

PAYCARE IN THE COMMUNITY

HigH Praises

The winners (photo courtesy of Express & Star)

Thanks to Paycare’s recent support of the Express & Star’s award scheme, the team had the honour of sharing much-deserved recognition with two hugely inspirational people for their continued work to help others. The Heroes Awards 2019 took place at Marston’s House on Thursday 16th January where Paycare was joined by all the award winners, guests, and fellow sponsors including McDonald’s, WHP, HomeServe, Marston’s and the Mander Centre. Anthony Burns, Commercial Director at Paycare (formerly Patient’s Aid Association) had the pleasure of presenting Ambassador of the Year and the Hero of the NHS award. He said: “We were honoured to have supported the Heroes Awards 2019 and were blown away with the quality of the entries we received.

“We had the opportunity to learn about so many special individuals who go above and beyond in our communities each and every day, so to pick just two winners was incredibly tough.” After sifting through so many deserved entries, it was 13-year-old Louis Johnson who was crowned our very deserved Ambassador of the Year. Since the age of just five, Louis has fundraised over £25,000 for charities in the region such as Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, the Steve Bull Foundation, Mary Stevens Hospice and Cry Wolves, including £9,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We were also thrilled to recognise Andrea Bexton as our Hero of the NHS for her work as a Sister in the Neonatal Ward of New Cross Hospital. After experiencing two pregnancy losses, a baby boy who was born prematurely weighing just under

2lbs, and a little girl who also had complications, she decided that her purpose was to work in the neonatal department to help other families and babies in times of difficulty. Andrea commented on her win: “I wanted to give something back and I’ve been through quite a lot – but I’ve got my dream job now. It’s nice to see the babies go home with their parents. And it’s wonderful to get this award, it’s really nice. All the hard work has paid off.” Being part of the Express & Star Heroes Awards was hugely rewarding and we were thrilled to sing the praises to all of those who deserve every ounce of recognition. We’re ecstatic for Andrea and Louis, as well as for all the other winners who were recognised on the night — we wish them all the very best in the months and years to come!

In 2019, Anne Smith, Policy Administrator at Paycare, put her MyGiving fund towards her fundraising for The Alzheimer’s Society which saw her raise a total of £2,190.41. She also used her two days of volunteering to support The Beacon Centre for the Blind. Following the launch of its staff charity initiative last year, Paycare is calling all good causes in the region who need help to get in touch. Its MyGiving scheme sees each staff member provided with £250 which they can either donate directly to charity or use to amplify one of their own fundraising initiatives such as a marathon or skydive — helping them to make an even bigger difference.

“Which is why we’d like to invite any local causes, projects or charities in need of support to get in touch. While some of our team have causes they’d like to support due to having personal experiences with them, others may luckily have not been touched by a particular issue and so we’d like to know more about what people are doing to help others in our county.

She said: “It’s been a wonderful initiative, and although we’re all already part of Paycare’s commitment to giving back, it just strengthens our individual sense of purpose at work. I can’t wait to plan my volunteering days and MyGiving fund for this year, and look forward to seeing what the rest of the team will be doing!” To share details about your work and how the Paycare team may be able to help you, please contact marketing@paycare.org.

In addition, each team member is provided with two extra days of annual leave each year for the sole purpose of volunteering for their chosen charity. Kevin Rogers, CEO of Paycare, explained: “Since we launched our MyGiving initiative in April 2019 we’ve raised over £17,000 for a wide range of causes close to our team’s hearts. This year, we want to beat this figure but also widen our reach by seeking new charities to support. www.twitter.com/MyPaycare/ www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

THE PERFECT COUNTRY HAVEN AWAY FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE... If you’re looking for the perfect place to stay in the Black Country then you’ll be delighted to find New Wood Farm. Located in Stourton - just outside of Wollaston – New Wood Farm boasts two beautifully renovated self-catering cottages that lie in a tranquil and picturesque countryside setting that’s within easy reach of Stourbridge, Kingswinford and Kinver. The converted farm buildings have been designed to offer guests a cosy ‘home from home’ and have been lovingly restored by owners Linda and Mick Thornton, who were keen to retain their original character whilst creating a stylish and modern interior. Welcoming visitors from all over the world, the couple have long been ensuring that their guests enjoy a wonderful stay. As Linda explains: “We have been hosting the barn for over 20 years and have had guests stay with us from as far away as Australia and America, as well as from all over the UK. We also have a lot of local people stay with us too.” Holiday makers, business people, those visiting relatives and local people needing a place to stay in between a house move, renovation works or even to recuperate after surgery - have all enjoyed what New Wood has to offer. “There are plenty of different reasons why guests choose to stay with us at New Wood but we hope that the reason they return time and time again is

because of the enjoyable stay they’ve had.” The Barn sleeps four people and has two bathrooms and The Stable provides accommodation for two. “The Barn and The Stable both benefit from a wood burning stove, comfy leather sofas and a large TV.” There’s also parking available for up to three cars and free WIFI. “Our gates open onto a bridle path that leads down to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire canal, with no passing traffic which is great for walkers and cyclists.” Linda and Mick have worked hard to pay attention to those little details that make all the difference; there are flower boxes and planters outside the cottages, as well as a very unique addition in The Barn. “We’ve got a Wurlitzer juke box containing many vinyl records from the 1960’s and 1970’s in The Barn that many of our guests love,” adds Linda. With so much to offer, it’s no surprise that guests at New Wood Farm can’t wait to book their next stay.

something for everyone at halfpenny green wine estate If you think that Halfpenny Green Wine Estate is a destination that’s just for wine lovers, then think again. There’s an amazing day out waiting for all of the family in the picturesque surroundings of acres of beautiful South Staffordshire countryside, as our feature writer Helen Taylor discovered one sunny Sunday afternoon. I’d been trying to find the perfect birthday gift for a special friend all morning when I drove down Tom Lane - on my way to Telford - and stumbled across Halfpenny Green Wine Estate.

I’d passed the vineyard plenty of times before but never taken the time to drive up and see just what was on offer. And, I was so glad that I did. Within minutes of entering the estate’s fabulous shop and deli - which is stocked full of delicious culinary treats from leading suppliers, as well as freshly prepared meals made onsite by the vineyard’s own chefs - I’d soon filled a basket full of mouth-watering buys that would delight any foodie. Making my way up to the Wine Loft, still in search of that special gift, I found a bottle of the estate’s own Sparkling Rose and discovered that the label could be personalised for my own message, and what’s more, that my haul of tempting treats could be turned into a special hamper. The estate’s own gift vouchers completed the present perfectly and so, I turned my attention to finding something special for myself.

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

I picked up a selection of bottles of the most popular wines: a delightful Penny Red, Penny Black, English Rose and Black Country Gold – each of which offers excellent value for money at just £9.50.

Alongside award-winning wines, there is a fabulous selection of gin, whisky and rum and there’s also a specially designed outside space that is perfect for tastings. The Wine Loft’s newly-built balcony offers guests a space to sit back and relax and take-in the fabulous views of the vineyards, whilst sampling the estate’s finest wines. Unsurprisingly the Wine Loft is a favourite with connoisseurs and in addition to tastings, guided tours are available, as 77

well as a special educational course which is run by the estate’s own Wine and Spirit Education Trust accredited expert, Helen Farquharson, for those keen to learn more about wine. With lunchtime fast approaching the enticing smell of Sunday dinner led me to the estate’s restaurant where I found a menu that had something for everyone: a choice of roasts, sandwiches, salads, paninis and homemade burgers. So, I called my partner to tell him to bring the kids and join me for lunch.

Everything at the restaurant is freshly prepared using locally-sourced products and ingredients and the menu is changed seasonally. The food was quite simply delicious and the estate’s ‘Long Acre’ dry white, complemented it perfectly. The restaurant is also the setting for the vineyard’s ever-popular Vintage High Tea which is available seven days a week (subject to booking) and there’s a weekday menu made-up of lunchtime classics and modern favourites - cooked freshly to order - served between 12:00 and 3.30 Monday – Saturday.

There’s also a dedicated function room ‘The Wine House’ which is housed next door to the winery, which can be hired for all-manner of private functions.

After relaxing for a while in front of the restaurant’s log burner, we decided to head outdoors and wander around the estate’s Craft Centre, which features 15 independent businesses which each offer something different: there’s everything from gifts and crafts, candle and glassmaking to an on-site beautician, photographer and dog groomer. Not to mention the centre’s own blacksmith who draws crowds when showing off his skills.

www.halfpennygreen.co.uk

And then, there’s the Wild Zoological Park which proved to be a very unexpected and exciting treat for my two kids. The park boasts an array of animals: lizards, snakes, spiders, crocodiles, parrots, vultures, meerkats and marmosets, to name just a few, and the whole experience serves to educate visitors about animals and highlight the importance of conservation. My kids thought it was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed it too.

Look and feel amazing with Celluform Fat Dissolving at Symétrie Celluform is an injectable used to reduce localised fat and cellulite designed to contour and erase small areas like the double chin and the jowls area. Celluform fat dissolving treatment improves skin elasticity. It is injected into fatty areas where they liquefy fat cells, destroying them permanently. The breakdown of these fat cells occurs over several weeks postinjection and can deliver excellent results that really make a difference. Call 01384 886 646 to arrange your FREE consultation.

Symétrie is a professional aesthetic clinic, based in Stourbridge, that offers a full range of nurse administered treatments with an emphasis on making only natural-looking changes, you can rest assured that when you leave the clinic you’ll still look like you, only an improved and more confident version of yourself.

We’re passionate about helping women – and men – restore their confidence making subtle aesthetic changes that have a dramatic impact. Clinic owner, Tracy Butler has extensive medical experience and started her career as a nurse before moving into the aesthetics industry. “We pride ourselves on the quality and professional service that we offer. We are not pushy, we don’t adopt a ‘sales’ approach, we’re simply

passionate about what we do,” explains Tracy. “There is a full one hour consultation available for our clients and I work hard to thoroughly explain each procedure that I carry out at every stage.” Everything at Symétrie is designed around the client and Tracy listens intently to their requests. “Everything we do is carefully considered, it’s a process and it isn’t rushed. For example, if a client is having lip fillers, I’ll talk them through every step as I carry out the procedure. I will encourage the client to look in the mirror midway through treatment to reassure them, and this

preserve their individuality.” It’s not just women that benefit, plenty of men visit the clinic for treatments too. “Thanks to my many years of experience and extensive training I’ve got an excellent understanding of the difference between treating men and women. It really is essential to understand the differences between male and female faces for the best results.”

For our readers flirting with the idea of changing or upgrading their hairstyle, what is your advice? Take your time and don’t rush into something radical overnight. Do some research and make sure you find a fabulous hairdresser with a great reputation. Our team are all trained by myself, Royston and our in-house Education Managers and they also attend lots of external courses and fashion events. They lead the way with the very latest trends and techniques and whether you’re wanting a daring short hairstyle, an incredible bob, you want to transform your long hair or to add hair extensions, you can always find a specialist at Royston Blythe. Come in and enjoy a consultation with us, we will guide your new look with our knowledge, inspiration and expertise.

How do we find inspiration? Enjoy browsing magazines and scrolling through Instagram for inspiration and create yourself a mood board on your phone that you can share with your hairdresser during your consultation. We regularly have new clients in our salon who have stopped people on the street to find out who their hairdresser is - so never be afraid to give someone a huge compliment….if you love their hair, tell them and ask them who cut or coloured it!

Short and medium length hairstyles are in the spotlight this year, do you have any favourites? The best haircut is the one that looks and feels good on you! I love those classic and iconic pixies (think Twiggy in the ’60s and Halle Berrie’s 90’s trademark style) with a modern and tailored twist. They can be adapted to complement the individual face-shape, they’re timeless and can work for any age. A well-cut pixie would be feminine yet strong and long enough at the front and on top so it remains super versatile and so that it can be styled so differently for every occasion. Shorter length bobs that really frame the face and highlight bone structure can be striking and are a favourite at Royston Blythe. Kaia Gerber (daughter of Julia Roberts) looks

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

fabulous with her new jaw-grazing bob that has a slight undercut crop and Bella Hadid’s blunt, chin-grazing super90’s bob that she revealed for the Vogue Fashion Festival in Paris is a stunner. A slightly longer shoulder-length bob (think J-Lo’s new super blunt version) is ideal for those who are wishing to gradually switch to a shorter style. What to consider when changing your hairstyle Colour me beautiful A fabulous cut is only as good as the colour and condition of your hair. Whether you want a statement platinum, a glossy chocolate or a soft and subtle balayage, clever colour placement and carefully chosen tones that complement your complexion are a must. The colour specialists at Royston Blythe tailor and personalise every colour for each individual client and offer you lots of inspiration during an in-depth consultation.

Style like a pro If you want your new hairstyle to look good in between your salon visits, you need to take some expert advice from your hairdresser on how to style and which products to use at home. Auto book Be prepared to visit your stylist regularly for trims that will keep your hair healthy. Healthy, well-cut hair (whatever the length) is so much easier to manage and style and gives the wow factor.

So, whether you’re ready to take inspiration from the Glossy Posse (Eva Mendes is the latest in a long line of A-listers who have chosen to abandon their long signature waves for a short, chic bob) or you still need some convincing, it’s time you checked in with the stylists and colourists at Royston Blythe for some expert advice and a stunning new look.

Euphoria Hair Finding the perfect look for you

From left to right: Debbie Shaw, Natalie Shaw, Danielle Shaw.

The friendly team at Euphoria Hair love nothing more than making their clients look and feel amazing, as salon owner, Debbie Shaw explains:

And, if you’re looking for a stylist to make your dream style a reality for your big day, then look no further than Euphoria.

Using leading salon brands, like Fudge, MUK, Joico, Moroccan Oil and GHD, the team keep their client’s locks looking healthy and shiny.

“From classic updos to boho down dos, we’ll create the perfect wedding hairstyle for both the bride and bridal party and we’re always happy to travel to the venue - we love seeing everything come together on the day.” Training is an integral part of life at the salon and so, models are always required:

And, the salon’s stylists pride themselves on listening to their clients to thoroughly understand their needs before finding the style that’ll suit their lifestyle.

“The condition of our client’s hair is always our priority and we offer two treatments which help to keep hair looking healthy. The first can be added to a colour service to strengthen and protect hair bonds and the second is a 25 minute four step treatment which reconstructs, strengthens and repairs.” For those looking to add length and thickness, the salon also specialises in hair extensions.

Established in 2011 by Debbie and her two daughters Natalie and Danielle, the Stourbridge-based salon has earned an excellent reputation and plenty of loyal regular customers who trust the team to keep their hair looking fabulous.

“We use a luxury brand called Spectrum One Extensions which offer a huge range of colours and allow clients to curl, straighten or colour their new locks. Following an in-depth consultation we can create the look our client desires.”

“Our clients are greeted by a friendly face as soon as they step through the door and we make sure that they feel totally relaxed and at-home throughout their entire visit.”

100

“All of our team specialise in different cutting and colouring techniques and everything is tailored to the individual.”

“We want our apprentices to gain valuable experience and develop their skills at our salon and so, we invite models to join us and enjoy being a part of the learning process,” adds Debbie. Whatever your style you can trust the Euphoria team to make you look amazing this spring, so why not book an appointment today?

HOW TO GET THE PERFECT LOOK WITH NATURAL FILLERS, MICROBLADING & FACE FREEZING Believing beauty totally comes from within, if we feel beautiful we become beautiful. Deborah has strived her whole career to create and find perfect treatments to achieve this, such as the Bee Sting Facial using her DEBORAH MITCHELL

patented natural form of Botulism Toxin, ABEETOXIN®. Offering natural fillers with Heaven’s unique techniques, treatments and products was the ‘natural’ step forward to offer a full medi-spa experience. “Whatever treatment I’m carrying out, I am always incredibly mindful to make sure that the results are completely naturallooking.

“I have dedicated my life to creating revolutionary skincare treatments which have

‘I work with many celebrities and high-profile people and they don’t want a dramatically different look straight away, so I’ve really been able to hone my skill-set making results really natural.”

“To get the best from your fillers you need to look at the rest of the face and make sure that the skin is looked after and refined. Our clients have found that they’ve had longer lasting results from their fillers when using our Age Defiance cream, which also removes spots, scars and lines.”

town & village life magazine | march/april 2020

“People are increasingly worried about the shape of their facial features and fillers are a massively effective tool in making a real difference. Although I am primarily a holistic therapist I want to bring my clients all treatments that will make them look and feel their best.” And, Deborah is fully qualified to perform the treatment after achieving the highest possible accreditation from the UK’s leading training school: “I’m thrilled to be able to offer fillers which create a really natural and flattering look, no matter where they are being injected and my clients have been amazed by how just a small amount of filler can enhance their entire face.”

AFTER

BEFORE (Lips)

YOUR LIPS: YOU MIGHT WANT ONLY A LITTLE BIT BIGGER OR MORE, ALL IS POSSIBLE. Deborah also uses fillers to perform treatments which offer clients a real alternative to surgery:

“Using fillers I’m able to offer treatments like ‘Russian Lips’ and ‘Twinkle Nose’ as well as non-surgical face-lifts. I can also use the fillers to change features that clients are unhappy with, like a hook nose, as well as being able to use fat removal injections to reduce unwanted fat in the cheeks and jaw line.”

“When this lovely client walks in to my clinic I think, ok, how do I make her look even better, I ask her what does she not like about herself. She replies ‘chip monk cheeks”. “So I use a very small amount of natural filler on top of the cheek bone, a touch on the chin and add a

twinkle nose. Then she asked can she have a little in her lips”. “With the results my client cried and said she now sees her daughter looking back at her not her mother”. Cost for this treatment can start from as little as £100.

SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP AND MICROBLADING: With a comprehensive menu of the latest semi-permanent treatments you can leave it to the talented team to create a look that perfectly suits you. Heaven Founder Deborah Mitchell was one of the first in the industry to introduce semipermanent makeup techniques, first appearing on television 30 years ago to show her expertise. She is also renowned for her expert eyebrow microblading. “The key to successful semi-permanent is to ensure it looks as natural as possible,” she explains. “We are not here to offer someone a false look – it’s about enhancing your already beautiful features“. ‘You can have natural looking eye-liner and lip liner that will make you look younger and feel more confident. With microblading I’ll even leave the odd eye brow hair slightly out of place so even I can’t tell that they’ve been done.” One of the most innovative treatments offered is the Heaven Skin Blush which allows colour to be applied under the skin – this can be done with either foundation or blusher to create natural-looking highlights, remove pigmentation and camouflage defects. 104

AFTER

“We are able to match the skin tone so it looks as natural as possible, and it means you don’t need to wear heavy makeup,” Deborah explains. “We use a device with tiny needles to apply the colour and over time it can actually help to improve skin texture and tone.”

Using natural, results-driven ingredients work in synergy with our highly trained Angels giving our clients the very best techniques in hands on therapy, medi spa and filler treatments. “I always strive to make my clients feel perfect, this comes from not always feeling so myself, either my skin had acne and then later the scars to the my body being unshapely after having the children, to then the lines, wrinkles and pigmentation”. “My new treatments and machines are cutting edge. Heaven medi spa is bringing these treatments together with the very best results and highly trained staff who will advise our clients what is perfect for them. I want my customers who enjoy Heaven Skincare products such as my HERO product the Bee Venom Mask to have the ultimate smooth skin and the best treatments I can offer”.

THE BEE STING FACIAL: BEFORE Cheek filler & Bee Sting Facial

The ultra relaxing treatment has been specially created with a host of natural and organic ingredients – including the potent bee venom – and is designed to increase collagen and reduce sun damage and pigmentation. This, combined with Deborah’s own massage techniques, gives an antiageing effect, and the instant results leave you looking and feeling radiant. “One of the things I love most about what I do is helping my clients to feel

Protect your child’s future vision Experts warn that by 2050, half of the world’s population (a staggering 5 billion people) are expected to be short sighted. More intense education and a lack of time spent outdoors is leading to an explosion in the condition. There is, as yet, no cure for myopia. The physical change of the elongated eyeball cannot be reversed (even laser-eye surgery can’t do this). People with myopia have an increased chance of developing serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma and retinal detachment in later life. The higher the myopia the greater the risk.

How can contact lenses for children help to preserve their vision? Thankfully, you can do more than correct their vision with glasses or contacts now - you can actually slow the progression of their myopia! How? There are 2 options: EyeDream Ortho K lenses or MiSight contact lenses, both of which are available at Taylor Biddle Opticians and are suitable for children aged 8 upwards.

Here’s how each work:

wearing contacts or glasses. In addition to providing vision correction, these lenses have also been shown to slow down the progression of myopia in children. They are safe to use, as they are only worn in the home at night, under parental supervision and are arguably as comfortable as wearing normal soft contact lenses.

MiSight MiSight soft contact lenses are worn during the day. They will correct your child’s vision in the same way as glasses do, but also signal to the eye to stop growing longer — as elongation of the eye is what results in myopia. You may be concerned about how your child will cope with wearing them but in our experience, we find children quickly adapt to wearing them as they are easy to use and provide a high level of comfort.

These revolutionary Myopia Control contact lenses offer more than vision correction – they ensure that your child’s eye health and vision is being protected as much as possible by reducing the risks associated with advanced myopia.

EyeDream Ortho K As with MiSight contacts, Ortho K contacts also provide vision correction, but these are rigid lenses which are worn overnight while your child sleeps. They imperceptibly flatten the surface of the cornea, which is what results in crystal clear vision the very next morning. Your child can then go about their day seeing clearly without 108

To find out if your child could benefit from either EyeDream or MiSight lenses, we need to start by doing an NHS comprehensive examination, so we can determine their latest prescription and check their eye health. Simply book an appointment for your child at our Compton or Wombourne branch and our experienced optometrists will also be happy to answer all of your questions about myopia control.

Hearing and vision are important for our health and wellbeing, though we don’t often think of our senses in this way. The Hearing Care Partnership together with Taylor Biddle Opticians have given their guide to building health across our lifespan through better hearing and vision.

What is healthy ageing? The World Health Organization defines it as “the ability to grow, learn and make decisions, to stay active. To be and do what you value throughout your life.” Different things affect our ability to age well, including our genes, our lifestyle, our location and our relationships with friends and family. It’s true that some of the choices we make in early life can alter the course of our later life, like how much we exercised and what we ate. But it’s never too late to make a positive change.

• Stay connected: Do things that give you joy and meaning, whether that’s playing tennis, taking up photography, or visiting places you love. All of these things help you to feel more positive. • Check your hearing and vision: People who look after their hearing and vision by getting expert advice and the right treatment, stay more active mentally and physically. By looking after our eyes and ears, we can be ready for whatever comes our way. Seeing things more clearly. Hearing and being heard. And enjoying more of the people and things that we love.

Staying connected Our eyes and ears are essential to healthy ageing. That’s because our hearing and vision are central to maintaining active social lives. While we may notice changes in our vision, it can be harder to detect – or come to terms with – the changes in our hearing. You may not notice changes in your hearing yourself. Instead, those closest to you will likely spot the signs first. So, what are the warning signs of hearing loss? • You might start watching TV at a volume that is louder than usual. • You might find it harder to hear what’s being said when there’s lots of background noise (for example in a busy café, restaurant, or meeting). This can lead to you withdrawing from conversations as you struggle to hear. • You need to concentrate more to understand certain voices (especially soft or low ones). • You find it challenging to hear over the phone. If you have noticed any of these in your day to day life, come and have a Free Hearing Assessment. Call us today on 0800 52 00 546.

So how can I look after my senses for longer? It’s never too late to make changes to the way you live. Here’s some tips to get you started.

The Audiology Service at Taylor Biddle Opticians is led by Helen Barton, who is dedicated to helping people live their lives to the full. She is driven to help each individual make the most of their hearing, to facilitate healthy ageing. “I have a passion for providing excellent customer care and I know that the key to this is good communication and listening skills. Working with The Hearing Care Partnership allows me the time I need to spend with each patient to ensure their care is tailored to them as an individual and to their lifestyle. Keep life in full colour with The Hearing Care Partnership and Taylor Biddle Opticians. Book a FREE hearing health check today on 0800 52 00 546 or visit www.thcp.co.uk/booking

• Stay active: Just 30 minutes of activity a day can help promote mobility and health in later life. What counts as ‘activity’? Anything that raises your heart rate until you feel slightly out of breath. 110

GET GREAT LOOKING LEGS For tHe SuMMer If you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. Having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling

women being affected equally. If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal.

people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort. VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.

During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.

Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and

The adorable youngsters can now be seen in Realm of the Lions on the four-mile safari drive-through. Wolverhampton’s best kept secret… Prep School Of The Year (Sunday Times) of seven, admits most pupils on a first-come, first-served basis which was another influential factor in the decision to name Newbridge the top Independent Preparatory School Of The year. Alastair McCall, Editor of Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide, said: “Newbridge is an educational gem, a precious find for the 150 children lucky enough to go there.

The Sunday Times Independent Preparatory School Of TheYear 2020. Newbridge Preparatory School was named The Sunday Times Independent Preparatory School Of The Year 2020 – an outstanding achievement for any school – but for a small, nonselective school in Wolverhampton this is remarkable! How lovely that Wolverhampton is placed so highly on the UK’s Educational map. National League Tables The Sunday Times Parent Power article releases the UK’s national league tables. The rankings make use of the most recent public examination results. For senior schools, they include A-level,

GCSE, while junior school rankings draw on SATs taken in Year Six. Newbridge’s performance in the league table bears out the holistic approach of the school; which has finished in the top 20 six times in the past eight years; since the school has been under the leadership of Headmistress Mrs Sarah Fisher. Results from the new Key Stage 2 SATs (standard assessment tests) last year have propelled it to second place this year, its highest ever ranking. Pupils attained a scaled score of 113 for reading (where 100 is the expected level of achievement by the age of 11). For grammar, punctuation and spelling the level was 116, and in maths it was 114. Independent Preparatory School Of The Year 2020 The top scoring schools across the country are reviewed by a panel at The Times. The review includes inspection reports, website and social media. They are looking at the education beyond the academic as that has already been proven by the league tables. The Editor of The Sunday Times selects the winner of the award. Newbridge, which is co-educational until the age

“It manages to pull off the notable feat of achieving outstanding academic results (bettered by just four schools in England across the state and independent sectors) alongside developing the wider interests of its pupils - or allowing the children to have time for a childhood, to use the words of its excellent Headmistress Sarah Fisher.” “The school may have non-selective entry but by the time the girls leave at 11 they are much in demand across the best state and independent schools in the West Midlands. If ever the quality of education on offer here was a “best kept secret”, this award should ensure that is not the case for very much longer.” What an honour for a small school based outside of London – putting Wolverhampton firmly on the educational map of the UK!
