Introducing internationally recognised dental implant surgeon Jonathon Pugh BDS MSc Wolverhampton based dental implant surgeon Jonathon Pugh BDS MSc is recognised as an international expert in the patient-centric care of people who have lost or who are losing their teeth. Jon was born and educated in Birmingham, graduating from the University of Birmingham in 1987 with honours and a distinction in clinical dentistry. His MSc in implant dentistry was completed at Warwick University, again with distinction, and he has been placing and restoring dental implants for over 27 years. He moved to Wolverhampton in 1991 and has focused his practice here. He currently operates at the Parkdale Dental and Implant Clinic. Due to Jon’s extensive experience the Clinic is recognised as a centre of excellence. Jon has recently attended an alignment meeting and alumni event for Pro Arch Centres of excellence in Lisbon, Portugal. The alignment meeting was hosted by Professor Joao Carames of the Instituto de Implantologia whilst the alumni meeting was hosted by Straumann a world leading implant company Jon has worked with his entire professional career.

All aspects of treatment are undertaken at the Clinic but Jon’s main area of interest is in helping people through the process of tooth loss to rehabilitation with implant borne replacement teeth. This process involves the placement of multiple Straumann implants with or without immediate loading. Which means, that if certain criteria are met, new fixed replacement teeth can be fitted in a day.

If you’re considering dental implants or are having issues with uncomfortable or misfitting dentures, please contact the Parkdale Dental & Implant Clinic.

you find me in a cheerful mood. now that the clocks have shifted forward, life is in full swing. talk of forthcoming holidays, barbecues and festivals has me readying an editor’s letter dripping with energy and vitality because after six years in this chair at tvl hQ i feel entitled. this is, after all, a sizeable 132-page edition with a fabulous new-look front cover. so here’s a sunny preview of what’s in store for this edition. look inside to find all the usual suspects: everything home and garden; where to eat (big nudge in the direction of halfpenny green vineyards’ food festival in June); where to be entertained (Casino 36 or Wolverhampton racecourse anyone?) and where to visit when you’re not looking to travel too far (the ‘discover dudley’ initiative wants us to celebrate local attractions like Black Country living museum, himley hall and why wouldn’t we?).

Three Pines

The experts in construction There’s always an exciting new project on the horizon for Wolverhampton’s premier building contractors, Three Pines. Working with public, domestic and commercial clients across the country, the company has long been known for its outstanding new build, extension, restoration and renovation works, that’s why Three Pine’s clients won’t trust anyone else to take care of their project. Starting life in 1961, the family-run business – that’s owned and managed by Company Director, Alan Bradshaw - has flourished over the years and has become one of the most trusted names in the construction industry. Boasting a highly trained, multi-skilled team of expert tradespeople, Three Pines is proud to have a diverse and vast portfolio of work that has seen the company complete small domestic jobs alongside massive contracts issued by some of the biggest names in business.

New bathroom installed

unoccupied until the Three Pines team began work transforming the building into flats and a café, alongside erecting some new builds on the site.” Other recent projects have seen the team undertaking work at H R Owen Aston Martin’s luxury showroom in Cheltenham and embarking on yet another job for the Ministry Of Defence at its large army reserve centre in Cobridge. With such a prolific portfolio and enormously positive impact that runs throughout the construction industry, it’s not surprising that Alan’s contribution has been officially recognised by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). Keen to present Alan with their new Lifetime Achievement Award – which was added to the ever popular Master Builder Awards to mark their 75th anniversary in 2017 - the federation were delighted to give Alan the coveted prize.

Bishop Percy’s House

And, there’s a particularly exciting project that Three Pines has just completed, as Alan explains: “We were delighted to be contracted to undertake works at Bridgnorth’s oldest and most beautiful building, Bishop Percy’s House, which was built back in 1580. The building is Grade 1 listed and has massive historic importance in the town and we were thrilled to be able to breathe new life into it.”

As involved as ever in the trade, Alan will still get his hands dirty on site: “Ever since my teens I wanted to be in construction. I still want to be in construction and I’m still passionate about building,” adds Alan. So, whatever you’ve got planned for your home or business, contact the Three Pines team today to make your plans a reality.

The impressive black and white timbered building is thought to have been built in 1580 as a commercial premises and residential home by Mr Richard Forster and was originally known as ‘Forster’s Folly”. Surviving Bridgnorth’s great fire in April 1646 – which was started by the Royalist garrison of the castle during the Civil War – the building has been home to many colourful characters over the years, including its namesake, Bishop Thomas Percy, who was born in 1729 at the property and went on to become the Bishop of Dromore. Most recently the building housed the Bridgnorth Boy’s Club from the 1940’s until 2003, before remaining 04

ROMAN BATHROOMS turn functional and everyday INTO

stunning and modern

Pat and Mark decided to improve their home after 35 years of marriage and when the last of their four children left home. “We decided it was finally our time,” says Pat. “The house was paid for but some of the rooms were tired, so we decided to make a few changes whilst we were still young enough to enjoy them.”

The couple now have their three refurbished rooms to enjoy. Each one is based around a neutral palette, with its own individual touches to make them stand out. From the marbled tiles to the panelled ceilings, they’re modern and timeless. And most importantly, somewhere that will see Pat and Mark well into the future. “We couldn’t be happier,” Pat says.

The couple refurbished the en-suite; the family bathroom and the downstairs cloakroom, turning them from functional and everyday, into stunning and individual rooms that anyone would be happy to spend time in. Pat was looking for a professional one-stop shop solution, from design to installation, the perfect brief for Roman Bathrooms! We provided a detailed survey and all-encompassing quote, to ensure no nasty surprises at the end. Pat was particularly impressed not only with the quality of the workmanship but the workmen’s tidiness! “There was no skip on the drive – they cleared away every day,” says Pat, “We couldn’t believe it!” 06

Do you Dream

of retiring?

I meet many clients, some new, some longstanding and apart from the few that live to work and never see themselves not working, the vast majority would love to be in a position to finish work and enjoy life. How do you know when you have enough money to retire? Most people, whilst they are working, are far too busy to work out how much money they need to live on and more importantly what they want to do with their lives. I have in the last week had two clients suffer adversity; one client who was 71 years of age and still working sadly passed away (he had been telling me for the last 6 years he was going to retire) and another who retired in December aged 60 has suffered a major stroke. Life is so short and I am constantly reminded of this which makes my 16

job so fulfilling when I can make a difference to someone’s life. A great example of this is another one of my clients who has just called to see me to review his finances. Keith first came to see me back in 2010 when he was 58 years old. At the time he was in remission from prostate cancer and wanted to ensure his retirement benefits were protected.

personal contribution of £12,000 meaning a grand total of £501,527 was paid into his pension. When considering transfers we also compare the benefits being given up with what it would cost to purchase an annuity on the open market as this then gives us an investment yield that needs to be achieved in order to match the benefits.

We carried out a full review and in total Keith had 4 pensions all with different providers although his main pension was a preserved final salary pension with Hansons.

In this case the yield required was 9.96% - way above what we would consider achievable. However, when looking at the benefits payable while in the scheme, on Keith’s death there was no spouse’s benefit which in effect meant the scheme died with him.

The pension he was entitled to on his 65th birthday was just in excess of £17,000 per annum and the transfer value was £219,000. In addition to this his other pensions gave him a total transfer value of £489,527. In 2015 Keith made a

Now throughout his working career Keith has always been in a senior managerial role and his wife who has supported him throughout means she is totally reliant upon Keith’s pension. If he were to die first she could not

afford to support herself without inheriting some form of pension.

– let’s hope that continues next year in the Premiership!

After careful consideration we transferred all his pension benefits into a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) which gave him control and peace of mind that should he die his wife will receive 100% of his pension benefits tax free.

For anyone with preserved final salary pension benefits: we are holding seminars throughout the year all over the Midlands if you are interested in attending. If you would like to attend just visit our website www.midlandifa.co.uk where you can find further details.

The reason I am telling you this is because when Keith came in to see me this morning he had finally set a retirement date of 22nd June this year and no-one is happier than me. Did he make the right decision transferring back in 2010? Keith thinks so as his pension is now worth £770,900 giving him an annualised return of 7.3% which, although less than what was required to purchase an annuity, Keith has no intention of doing that as he would prefer to control what benefits he takes and when he takes them. The other advantage he has is that he does not require all of his tax free cash so he has the flexibility to take what he wants when he needs it thus giving him freedom to spend his savings which are on deposit attracting very little interest, knowing that cash is accessible as and when required. This summer Keith will now spend his time with his 4 year old grandson giving him memories that will last a lifetime. It does also give him more time to follow his passion which is going to all the Wolves matches both home and away, which this year has been very enjoyable and successful www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

in 3 categories at this year’s Tile Association Awards 2018

traders who can complete the job if you prefer.”

A TTA Award is an outstanding symbol of excellence and the annual event is a fantastic networking opportunity for all involved in tiles and tiling. There were 16 award categories to enter, including Excellence in Multiple Retailing, Excellence in Marketing and Best E-Commerce Website. Plans are well in hand for the Gala Dinner which will host over 700 people and presentations on Friday 18th May at the St. Johns Hotel in Solihull, and as a finalist, Tile Choice looks forward, as a local Wolverhampton-based company, to being recognised amongst its peers. As the largest independent tile retailer in the country, Tile Choice has become known for its industryleading service, products and designs. Established in 1991, Tile Choice quickly established an excellent reputation and impressive customer base, which saw the business expand rapidly across the local area and beyond. Now boasting an impressive 17 individually designed stores throughout the West and East Midlands areas, plus a new store opening in Worcester this summer, the business continues to go from strength to strength. Marketing Director, Lee Rudkin explains: “We pride ourselves on the excellent service and quality products we offer our customers. Every member of the Tile Choice team is expertly trained and able to help customers find the right products for them, as well as giving practical advice on how to plan and measure a room for tiling.” 20

And it’s this emphasis on staff training that really sets the company apart from the competition. “The key to customer satisfaction is ensuring that our staff are trained in all aspects of the tile industry, so that they can properly advise the customer and meet their needs.” The company even employs mystery shoppers to visit their stores a couple of times a month to ensure that standards remain as high as possible. Quality runs throughout the company and that’s why clients can rest assured that they’re buying excellent products, even though the prices are kept impressively low. “We buy direct from leading manufacturers and because we buy in massive quantities we’re able to keep prices low for our customers.” Tile Choice holds over £5million’ worth of stock at its centralised 30,000 square foot warehouse and distribution centre. “Clients can rest assured that we will never run out of stock and that we always have the most up-to-date choice of products.” The business works hard to stay ahead when it comes to trends and always ensures that its showrooms are packed with the latest designs. “Porcelain wood-effect tiles are really popular at the moment as well as vintage-looking tiles with Victorian-inspired designs.”

Customer orders are quickly dealt with via the company’s warehouse, which offers support to stores, allowing customer orders to be picked out on the same day and dispatched quickly nationwide. “We have our own vehicle fleet to service stores on a daily basis, along with a customer delivery service that’s available via every store.” The company’s high standards have even been officially recognised in the industry. “We have previously won awards three out of four years running at The Tile Association (TTA) awards, which is an excellent accolade in the industry.” Tile Choice also works closely with its local community, helping to raise money for charity and sponsoring Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, Wolverhampton Rugby Club and Walsall Football Club. “Giving something back to the local community is really important to us; we get involved with a lot of charity events and sponsor our local teams.” The business was even on-hand to help out several local families who appeared on BBC’s hit show DIY SOS, when it supplied tiles so that their home renovations could be completed by the show.

And the company’s extensive and diverse ranges meet the needs of both domestic clients and the trade alike.

So, if you are looking for an up-tothe-minute design for your kitchen, bathroom or en-suite; a traditional style or contemporary design for your lounge, hallway or conservatory, Tile Choice will meet your every requirement at exceptional prices.

Woodrobes

Woodrobes’ excellent reputation for high quality bespoke bedroom furniture and excellent customer service has paid dividends over the past 12 months.

Nestled in Mill Street, Kidderminster the company has expanded its staffing levels and increased its range of products significantly. There was already an unrivalled choice of styles, designs and colours but over the past few months three totally new designs have been added to the range of available products, all very contemporary and superbly stylish. In terms of finishes and colours the inclusion of new shades and textures is a never-ending process as there are so many vinyl finishes entering the market. This is where Woodrobes keeps one step ahead of the competition with a program of constant development to bring the very latest ideas to customers. Manager Les Wood has a well laid development plan, as he explains:

large amount of time sifting through them before deciding which would really appeal to our customers. “We have just released our new brochure for 2018 and once again it has increased in size to accommodate new products. Many companies release generic brochures but ours is specifically tailored to our products and always features installations we have completed throughout the year, not unrealistic studio set bedrooms, which is appreciated by our customers.

“Bedrooms and especially bespoke bedrooms is a very competitive area of the fitted furniture market. We are fortunate that our schedule allows us to plan ahead, not just for ongoing jobs, but our long-term goals and objectives which are to constantly be at the forefront of the marketplace.

“One of the main indicators that we are doing things correctly is the number of repeat orders we receive once one bedroom is finished, also the number of recommendations from existing customers. This is one of the most heartening parts of the business. When your customers are so satisfied they will recommend you to their friends and family.

“There are dozens of new designs and hundreds of finishes and colours released each year and we spent a

“Our showroom has recently received a significant update with all three major displays now featuring

new colours and finishes. Being able to display our designs and installation work is an excellent boost for the business. Customers know instantly the quality of product and finish they will receive in their own homes. “We have a constant desire to be the best as a company and supply our customers with the best bedrooms on the marketplace. All our staff have the same work ethic and the showroom staff in particular, demonstrate their vast product knowledge on a daily basis. “The cycle is never-ending but we strive to provide the best bespoke bedrooms with the widest choice available always coupled with our outstanding customer service.” Woodrobes is open six days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm and welcomes customers who simply want to chat and browse to gain an appreciation of our products and staff while enjoying a cup of coffee. rfc so, here we are at the end of the 2017/2018 season and there is only one more rugby game of note that you might all like to be involved in.

Traditionally our Fourth team known as the “Greyhounds” and our Fifth team known as “The Grasshoppers“ challenge one another every year in “The Clash of the Titans”. This year’s date is Friday May 11th with a kick-off at 7.00pm. Every year money is raised for a nominated charity and this year the beneficiary will be “Mind”, the mental health charity. Entrance on the evening is £5.00 each with children free. Do come along and support the charity and watch this action packed game. The pace of the game may not be very fast as several veterans will be on the pitch, not necessarily for the full eighty minutes! The good news on the pitch is that Stourbridge Lions have held their own in Midlands One West and it looks as though two other local sides, Old Halesonians through relegation and Droitwich through

promotion will be joining them next season. The First XV have met their early season aspirations with a top five finish and have attracted several new players for next year. They will also be looking forward to new opponents next year, Preston Grasshoppers, Fylde and local rivals Birmingham and Solihull. Thoughts are well advanced for pre-season with a game booked at Dings Crusaders in Bristol on Saturday August 18th. Our Mini and Junior sides seemed to spend all of April either hosting festivals or travelling to and enjoying festivals at other clubs and especially over the May Bank Holiday weekend. They will be looking to recruit more players next year though not quite as young as the toddler pictured here. We have just finished the busiest weekend of the year with 1400 local professionals enjoying Friday 4th May with our guest speakers Bill Beaumont, David Gower and John Peters and a lively evening at the Royal Ball on the Saturday dancing to the “One Stop Boogie Band“ all in a 65 metre marquee. On Sunday 6th May we concentrated on our adopted charity for the year. In conjunction with the “Opening Boundaries” charity all proceeds went to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the whole day was endorsed by West Midlands Police under the title “I support Tackling Knife Crime”. The event featured rugby in the afternoon with local players taking part and there

were opportunities to engage with representatives from Opening Boundaries, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and West Midlands Police, who are devoted to reduce either the carrying or use of knives in the community through the criminal justice system. Our local MP Margot James is seen here with Farah Ahmed of “Opening Boundaries” endorsing the day when it was announced back in November. And just to prove that we can get involved in other sports we hold our Annual Golf Day for The Lombard Trophy at Stourbridge Golf Club on May 11th. So that’s it for this season and by the time we come round to the July edition there will be plenty more news of next season. All our function rooms are available for weddings and parties. Please contact our hospitality Manager Donna Tromans on 01384 395000.

Rudells’ rare and priceless gem,

Liz Baggott “I’ve always had a love of jewellery, especially coloured stones and so having the opportunity to work amongst - and learn about - such beautiful items was really thrilling.”

Working alongside Mr and Mrs Rudell, Liz learned on the job, gaining valuable experience in both product knowledge and sales. “Mrs Rudell made selling look easy. She was glamorous, charming and had an excellent relationship with her customers - she somehow knew exactly what they were looking for. She was a real inspiration to me.”

Mr Justin Rudell and his wife Etta

With a reputation that sparkles brighter than its glittering window displays, Rudells is a name that’s synonymous with quality. Established in 1938, the prestigious jewellers started life as a leatherware and fancy goods retailer before becoming the muchloved store it is today.

In fact, if you ask any member of the Wolverhampton team they’ll tell you that amongst the dazzling jewels, prestigious timepieces and luxury gifts is a unique and multi-faceted gem: Liz Baggott.

Providing only the finest quality luxury goods and offering exceptional customer service has earned the business a fiercely loyal client base at both Wolverhampton and Harborne branches.

“Rudells always had a somewhat magical appeal. I remember coming into town with my mother as a child and visiting Beatties before crossing over the road to have a peak in Rudells’ window,” says Liz.

Complete with a dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate team, Rudells treats clients to a customer service experience that’s far superior to the competition. And, leading the way when it comes to service is one very special team member who has spent her 45 year-long career delighting clients – and their loved ones - at the family-run business.

An integral part of the team since 1973, Liz has long been an inspiration to colleagues and a favourite with clients and has been instrumental in ensuring the growth and success of the business over the decades.

Before joining the business, Liz trained at college to become a home economist and began her working life for Kenwood, demonstrating around the country. But, she was always drawn to the jewellery trade.

At a time when women’s roles revolved around the home and most young women aspired only to become a good housewife, Liz knew it wasn’t the future she wanted. “I wasn’t interested in getting married and staying at home; I wanted to work and I adored my job at Rudells.” Looking suitably glamorous in her role has been a priority for Liz, and so, inspired by Mrs Rudell, she has always ensured that her wardrobe is filled with the finest brands. Over the years Liz has enjoyed various aspects of the trade, that have taken her outside of the showroom. One such trip was a visit to Antwerp for a course on diamond grading. “The diamond buying experience is incredible; being able to sit down and spend time inspecting each stone is amazing.” As the store’s Fope Ambassador, Liz has also travelled to Italy to pay a visit to the headquarters of the prestigious company. “I’m a massive fan of Fope jewellery, their designs are absolutely exquisite.”

“We have a great time together and lots of laughs. We often get together outside of work to enjoy a night out – my colleagues certainly keep me young!” Keen to celebrate Liz’s milestone, the Rudell team organised a special surprise celebration for her at The Mount Hotel. “It was a really wonderful gesture and I was delighted to celebrate my 45th year at Rudells with the team.” It’s not the first time that Liz has been treated to a party though; she also marked her 25th and 35th anniversaries with a celebration too. And, with no plans to retire any time soon, a 55th anniversary could well be on the cards in the future. In fact, there has been much cause for celebration at Rudells in 2018, with the store marking its 80th year in business in February and being shortlisted in multiple categories for the 2018 UK Jewellery Awards, which include ‘Employer of the Year’, ‘Independent Retailer of the Year’, ‘Watch Sales of the Year’ and ‘Sales Team of the Year’. It’s sharing in each other’s accomplishments and enjoying group success that makes the Rudells team great. And for Liz, being a part of the team is exactly where she wants to be.

Liz in the showroom with Director Sioux Jones and MD Jon Weston

“I’ve always known what I’ve wanted from life and I’ve always done it, I don’t settle for second best. As far as I’m concerned, I was made for Rudells and Rudells was made for me,” adds Liz.

Liz’s customers trust in her judgement implicitly when it comes to finding that all-important gift for a loved one. “I always ask men who are buying a gift for their partner to describe the lady, that way I can get a pretty clear idea of the sort of thing she’ll love.” And Liz gets it right every time. “There’s a real satisfaction in knowing that a customer is happy because it’s so important for them to leave the store feeling completely satisfied with their purchase.” There’s undoubtedly a special connection between Liz and her customers and just like her mentor Mrs Rudell, Liz knows how to find the right piece for the right person, “I’ve developed such a close bond with my clients over the years and have felt really privileged to be a part of their life. I’ve seen their families grow and it’s lovely to now be serving their grandchildren, decades after they first came to me.” Liz has plenty of praise for the current management team at the store: “Our Directors - Jon Weston and Sioux Jones - do an amazing job. In a world where online sales are taking business away from the high street, they’ve worked tirelessly to ensure the business remains as successful as ever.” And Sioux and Liz share a very close bond: “Sioux and I are great friends and kindred spirits.” With extensive product knowledge, an undeniable passion for jewellery and an innate ability to sell, it’s no surprise that Liz is admired by her colleagues. But, there isn’t just admiration shared between Liz and the team, there’s also true friendship. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Garden

V i e w Ground Control By Rachael Leverton

You can’t go wrong with a geranium. They grow well where other plants struggle, particularly those shady areas, or parts of the garden with poor soil. And they are so useful - they provide hundreds of pretty flowers and also smother the ground with a welter of leaves that prevent weeds from taking hold. Don’t confuse these hardy geraniums with the tender bedding plants with the horseshoe leafmarkings. They may be commonly called geraniums but they are in fact pelargoniums and not hardy so would perish in a hard frost. True geraniums are as tough as old boots. There are loads to choose from offering a wide range of colours and habits. If you want a carpet of tiny pale pink saucer flowers try Geranium sanguineum striatum. It’s great for growing in the crevices of a garden path, or even in a shallow tub or sink where its finely cut leaves show off the flowers to their best advantage. Geranium macrorrhizum is probably the most reliable ground cover of them all. It creates a

38

low dense mass of aromatic hairy leaves about 30cm / 12 inches high. The flowers open in late spring and there are varieties in white, pale pink or magenta. These are followed by bright red seedheads providing interest well into the autumn. Propagation is ridiculously easy. Simply rip up a clump of the thick creeping stems and push them into the ground where you want them to establish. Make sure they don’t dry out and you can be assured of success. If you’d like a plant with a bit of height go for Geranium psilostemon. This grows to about 1.5m / 5 feet. It has deep magent flowers with a black eye, and is a great self-seeder. If you struggle with a patch of denser shade I can recommend the blue-flowered Geranium himalayense, and also ‘Johnson’s Blue’. Both will form clumps about 30cm / 12 inches high. Whether you have a new garden which needs to be filled with colour, or an established garden with a few bald patches, plant hardy geraniums and you won’t be disappointed.

The growing season

has arrived

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

Easter was early this year, making us think that the season is further advanced than it actually is. Cold nights in April and May can soon set back tender plants that are put out too soon. There’s plenty to plant out and do in the vegetable plot at the moment. Plant smaller quantities little and often to keep a steady supply of veg for the kitchen. Most garden centres sell packs of vegetable plants so it’s easy to plant out a few every fortnight as well as sowing seeds of radish, spring onions and basil, little and often. Cover fruit bushes with netting to stop the birds picking your fruit before you do. Spray fruit trees before flowers open and after fruit has set to keep bugs under control. Provado Fruit and Veg Bug Killer is a good insecticide, but unfortunately fungicides for edible crops have been removed from the market. Keep bushes watered where possible if it’s dry to discourage mildews and clear up any diseased foliage when seen. Tomato, Cucumber and Pepper plants should not be planted outside until the end of May and when inside need some heat at night if temperatures are dropping low. Watch out for slug damage on young herbaceous plants, and summer bedding such as Marigolds. Use slug pellets or one of the natural controls that are available. ‘Slug Gone’ is a relatively new product that is made from

42

sheep’s wool, it’s sold in pellet form which you put round the base of plants and once dampened its small fibres act as an irritant to slugs. Many herbaceous plants flower in their first year and there’s always a good selection available on our outdoor tables. The first batch of West Country Lupins should be ready now, with their many vibrant colours they make a delightful splash of colour, along with the hardy Geraniums and the coloured leaves of the Heuchera. Summer bedding can be planted outside from the end of May onwards, so long as we aren’t getting any late frosts. Antirrhinums, Asters and Lobelia first, leaving Marigolds, Begonias, Impatiens and Geraniums until the beginning of June if necessary. Water well

to get established, then, feed fortnightly and dead head regularly. As the weather improves the grass will start growing and need cutting. Do a light cut first, gradually reducing the mower height over several cuts. There’s plenty of moss in lawns again this year and MO Bacter organic moss treatment is the ideal product to use against it. It can be applied to your lawn any time from March through to September, it contains an organic fertiliser that releases over a 3 month period which digests the moss, greens the lawn and improves the soil. It leaves no unsightly black patches and scarifying is not necessary. An added bonus is that if you accidently get in on your borders it won’t harm the plants in them either.

if you are thinking of getting your garden professionally designed this summer, what should you be looking out for when choosing a landscape company? We ask Andi Way, Garden Designer at the award-winning Boningale Garden Creations for his advice and tips.

What makes a good garden designer? A good garden designer has to be in tune with the customer – and gaining trust is absolutely vital. This means spending time with them to ascertain exactly how they want to use the garden and what it is they want to achieve within their budget.

What should people look for if they want to use a garden design company?

Do some digging! Before signing on the dotted line, ask to speak to previous customers and check to see if it is a member of the Association of Professional Landscapers – this will give you added assurance of quality and guarantee of service. We’ve been an accredited member of the APL for many years, which ensures our processes and standards meet the industry’s guidelines.

Will they help us choose the best hard landscaping materials? Materials are one of the most important components in the design (and budget) and with so many options, from slate, block paving and brick to concrete and gravel – not forgetting natural materials like

hedging and trees - to choose from, it may feel overwhelming. A good company will advise on the pros and cons of each type of material taking into account the design brief, surrounding landscape as well as a home’s architectural style.

Where can we get inspiration from? Visiting National Trust gardens is a great way to pick up ideas. You don’t have to have a large garden to be able to inject some of the design styles that are used in Trust Gardens. It’s about honing the idea and having the imagination to see how they could work in a domestic environment.

A DAY IN THE LIFE…

ever wondered what it’s like to work in a busy veterinary practice? One of Blacks Vets’ Client & Pet Care Advisors talks us through her day. point of contact for clients and patients attending the practice, so I’m delighted to be able to show you around! One of my favourite things about my role is that no two days are ever the same, but here’s an insight into some of the things my team and I are involved in on a daily basis.

7.45am

Annette Brierley, Blacks Vets

By Annette Brierley, CPCA at Blacks Vets, Dudley

hi, i’m annette and i am one of the Client & Pet Care advisors here at Blacks vets in dudley. I love my job, based front-ofhouse at our accredited Veterinary Hospital. It’s my job to be the first

46

The early shift team arrive at the practice and begin getting ready for the first patients of the day. This is usually pets coming in for surgical procedures so we make sure that water bowls are taken off the floor and that treats are well out of sight. We get our Reception area ready by switching on the computers, opening the Pharmacy and ensuring that the waiting area is clean and tidy. Our hospital is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year so there is always a team here caring for poorly pets and one of our talented vets is always on call. We pride ourselves on never outsourcing care and our hospital

is equipped to deal with a variety of emergency and routine procedures.

9.00am At this time, the first consultations of the day begin and our patients start to come through the door. We know that for some, a trip to the vets can be a nerve wracking experience so our role is to make patients and clients alike feel calm and welcomed. Many pets visit us for routine treatment such as vaccination boosters. Bringing your pet in when they are well can really help them become accustomed to visiting the vets as this builds association with a positive experience. With your permission, we will always offer fuss and treats once their appointment has been completed. However, if a pet is very poorly, we find quiet space for them to wait and try to ensure that they are seen as quickly as possible to minimise distress.

11.00am A large proportion of our time is spent on the phone so excellent

proved. Microchipping is now a legal requirement for dogs, but we would encourage owners of all outdoor pets to consider having this done. Cats, rabbits and tortoises all go missing too! communication skills are a must. Many clients ring for advice when they are worried and we take calls throughout the day where we give guidance on the best course of action, making space in the schedule as necessary if urgent care is required. We also manage our referral case load. At Blacks, we are fortunate to have several vets who are certificate holders which means they have additional expertise in areas such as cardiology, dermatology and orthopaedic surgery. Many local practices refer patients to us for challenging or unusual cases.

1.00pm It’s not uncommon for a member of the public to bring in a stray pet that they have found. Our front-of-house team scan pets for microchips and reunite them with their owners if a chip is found, the owner’s contact details are current and identity can be

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

3.00pm Throughout the day as consultations complete, we dispense medication from our in-house pharmacy and make sure clients understand how and when to administer. We check that all routine appointments are booked in for members of Protect My Pet Club, our brilliant pet healthcare plan that looks after pets and pockets! This is an easy way to stay on top of essential healthcare and covers flea and worming treatment, boosters and regular health checks as well as discounts on routine procedures such as neutering, microchipping and some dental work. You can find out more information on our website www.blacksvets.co.uk or feel free to pop in and have a chat with one of our friendly team.

5.00pm Oops! Little accidents happen throughout the day so a fair amount of time is spent clearing up

whenever an unscheduled toilet trip takes place! This is often the case when our youngest patients visit us to take advantage of our popular Pet Starter Pack. New puppies, kittens and bunnies can all benefit from primary vaccinations, first flea and worm treatment, a microchip, an initial health check, a bag of Royal Canin food and 4 weeks’ pet insurance, all for just £50! Getting to cuddle all those fur babies has got to be one of the best parts of my job and the CPCA team love meeting your new family members.

7.00pm Our last appointment is 7.00pm and the evening team handover to the night-shift team who provide ongoing and emergency care overnight. I have a real sense of job satisfaction knowing that we’re making a positive difference to the lives of Black Country pets and love meeting new people and supporting them through their pet-owning journey. We are always on the lookout for dedicated and friendly CPCA’s so if you have a passion for pets and would like the opportunity to join the Blacks family, email your CV to penelopefox@blacksvets.co.uk

kinver rotary Club More than 300 trees planted south staffs M.P. and secretary of state for defence, gavin Williamson, picked up a spade alongside pupils from Brindley heath Junior school in kinver who took part in a worldwide tree planting operation organised by rotary international.

The original idea, from Rotary International’s current president, was designed to increase worldwide recognition of the movement while, at the same time, making a significant contribution to the green environment of the planet. The club gained the support of Brindley Heath Junior School in

Kinver and drew up a planting scheme which involved National Trust volunteers who demonstrated planting techniques to the pupils. The cost of the trees has been taken from the funds put aside for a worthy cause following a charity garden party in 2016 at the home of a friend of the Kinver club.

More than 300 ash, beech and spruce trees were planted in Kingsford Lane Country Park, part of Kinver Edge, as part of the Rotary scheme to plant more than 1.2 million trees across the continents – one for each member of the organisation. The Rotary Club of Kinver has a membership of 45 but has agreed with the National Trust to plant 300 of the broadleaved species as part of the Trust’s Woodland Trust initiative.

Compton launches bold new strategy to address fear and revolutionise palliative care services. • Compton Care is one of the first in the UK to remove ‘hospice’ from its name – challenging fear and misconceptions surrounding its services • Organisation is breaking down early care access barriers for patients and loved ones • Plans include a £2.5m investment in a Care Coordination Centre Wolverhampton-based care provider Compton Care, formerly known as Compton Hospice, launched a new strategy and identity on Wednesday 11th April aimed at revolutionising the way in which people with complex and incurable conditions are cared for, after research found that people are fearful of accessing its services. The charity carried out patient, staff and supporter and sector research which found that a large number of people associate the word ‘hospice’ 52

with being ‘a place you go to die’. In turn, this negative perception has contributed to people often becoming fearful of accessing care from Compton, as well as healthcare professionals making referrals only in the final weeks or days of a person’s life. Moving forward as Compton Care, the organisation’s new strategy, which includes a multi-million-pound investment in better coordination of patient care, will aim to ensure the care it provides is accessible to people much earlier and for longer. The move will bolster Compton’s service delivery at its sites and in the community for patients and their loved ones across Wolverhampton, the Black Country, Staffordshire and Shropshire. Claire Marshall, Chief Executive of Compton Care, said: “Our new clinical strategy and brand marks an exciting step for Compton – one that continues to put the patient at the heart of care delivery. Our research with patients, families and supporters highlighted key challenges surrounding town & village life magazine | may/june 2018

access to hospice care – namely fear about who we are and what being referred to us means.

with the healthcare economy and third sector to ensure that the patient is always at the centre of delivery.

“We’re on a mission to remove this fear and break down barriers to service access to ensure more patients get referred to us earlier, so we can treat them sooner and help them live better lives.”

In-line with the new strategy Compton is also revealing its new name as Compton Care – a new identity to reflect its changing approach and future direction. It is one of the UK’s first to remove ‘hospice’ completely from its identity, with the aim of removing fear, challenging misconceptions and ensuring more patients and their relatives get the care needed to live better lives, earlier on.

The new strategy, which includes a £2.5m investment into its Care Coordination Centre – supported by £1.5m of funding from ex-Goodyear workers, is focused on ensuring that patients are referred into its care earlier on, allowing for better complex condition management and improved quality of life. Compton will achieve this by better integrating its own services, while adopting a partnership approach

Davenport House

Standing proudly amid acres of rolling parkland, Davenport House has been part of the Shropshire countryside for centuries. In more recent times, this country house in picturesque Worfield has been a romantic and elegant setting for weddings and the latest custodians, Elizabeth and Joseph, have made it their mission to take Davenport House to the next level. Dating back to 1726, this Georgian mansion was once the home of William Davenport and comes with a history of love. Following a forbidden romance, William married Jane Bromley and their grandson, Henry, commissioned Francis Smith to design Davenport House as we know it today. Full of traditional grandeur and character, this remarkable house has recently undergone an incredible transformation to make it one of the standout wedding venues in the area. Since taking charge of this stunning setting, Elizabeth and Joseph have worked tirelessly to renovate each aspect of Davenport House. The Great Hall, a spectacular setting for wedding ceremonies at the front of the house, features cool grey walls that highlight the house’s past while providing a contemporary

58

accompaniment to the impressive painting and intricate plasterwork. The Drawing Room has had its elegance fully restored, combining an authentic feel with exquisite views of the venue’s tranquil grounds and hidden garden. The old stables are just a few steps from the front door and now provide the perfect space to prepare before tying the knot. The cast iron hay racks remain, but sit alongside comfy sofas, a well-equipped kitchen, plenty of mirrors and everything that a couple could need in the build-up to their ceremony. The grounds also hold a handful of private and peaceful cottages that will offer guests a wonderful night’s stay after the celebrations have drawn to a close. A wander up the ornate staircase reveals a collection of beautifully furnished bedrooms, each with their own style and unique features. Huge beds, inviting sofas and chic décor make each one a joy to spend the night in. With views over the idyllic pond and secluded grounds, they sum up everything that makes Davenport House a truly special wedding venue. a Busy summer ahead at

halfpenny green Wi n e e s t a t e The last few years have seen some huge projects take place at south staffordshire’s very own vineyard, including a multifloor extension to the shop, WiLd Zoological Park in the on-site Craft Centre, and an extension to the restaurant’s main dining area. This means that summer 2018 will be the busiest ever for the lively site near Wombourne, and will be packed with attractions for the whole family! The crowning event comes in the form of Halfpenny Green’s third annual Food & Wine Festival, which takes place on Saturday 9th June. Featuring food and drink stalls (and plenty of samples, of course), a barbecue, and live music throughout the day, it’s set to be a fantastic day. And best of all, it’s free to attend! For those more interested in learning about the exciting world of English wine, Halfpenny Green runs tours and tastings throughout the summer months. Available on selected dates (by booking only), guests are taken to see the vines and the winery, learn about how Halfpenny Green’s wines are made, and indulge in an all-important wine tasting! All of this is followed by a two course meal, and represents great value at just £24.95 per person – gift vouchers are also available to purchase from the on-site shop! Once you’ve sampled some of the Estate’s internationally award-winning English 60

wines – now stocked in Waitrose and Marks and Spencer – the on-site shop should be your next port of call. Set across three floors, with panoramic views of the South Staffordshire countryside, the authentic converted barn stocks a range of traditional produce - such as jams, preserves and chutneys – plus fresh cheeses and olives at the deli counter, and, best of all, there’s an entire floor dedicated to alcohol! As well as stocking Halfpenny Green’s own range of still and sparkling wines, the appropriately named Wine Loft is home to a range of beers, ciders and spirits, plus over 80 artisan British gins! Whether you’re shopping for a gift, or just for your own palate,

the knowledgeable staff are always happy to help, and even host wine and gin tastings by booking throughout the year! At £19.95 and £25.00 per person respectively, either experience makes for a fantastic gift (again, vouchers for sale in the shop), or just an excuse to learn more about some excellent British drinks! If drinks aren’t your thing, or you fancy indulging your stomach too, the Wine Estate is home to a restaurant and tearooms, open for lunch seven days a week. Recently refurbished to include a light and airy dining area and brand new service counter, the restaurant serves up a range of delicious homemade produce, all cooked fresh to order by a dedicated team of chefs. Featuring a classic menu, daily specials, light bites, cakes and drinks - and even traditional High Teas (available by booking only) - there’s something to suit everyone’s appetite. This summer there’s never been a better time to visit your local vineyard – Halfpenny Green Wine Estate! A l l ab out the exp erience Horizons Restaurant is the jewel in the crown at Wolverhampton Racecourse. Set over three tiers, the panoramic viewing from the restaurant offers guests the chance of a great lunch or dinner to enjoy in style and luxury. The wine lists are carefully selected and the menus are an exquisite mix of dishes produced with locally sourced ingredients.

Wolverhampton Racecourse is one of the UK’s busiest racecourses, set within 22 acres of beautiful parkland; it provides a fantastic vantage point and environment for cheering on the horses. In 2018, Wolverhampton Racecourse will stage 80 meetings, so there is plenty of horse racing for you to take in. Wolverhampton Racecourse holds both afternoon but predominately evening racing, famous for its Saturday nights throughout the autumn and winter. It is an extremely popular venue for individuals of all ages with a well renowned reputation for racing all year round and highly anticipated events, including live music performances and feature days out. Racing began in Wolverhampton in 1825 and moved to the current racecourse site in 1888, the first race meeting being held on 13 August. We are proud that in 1994, HRH Queen Elizabeth II re-

opened the new Wolverhampton Racecourse. We now welcome over 120,000 visitors each year to Wolverhampton Racecourse, who each enjoy an exhilarating and memorable experience. Arena Racing Company now own Wolverhampton along with 15 other racecourses in the UK, making Wolverhampton part of the biggest racecourse group in UK. After hosting UB40, Madness and The Human League in recent years the racecourse is playing host to Ocean Colour Scene on 31st August 2018 and Brit award winners the Kaiser Chiefs are also performing live after racing on Ladies’ Day, Saturday 1st September 2018. The day promises to be another spectacular event, with competitions for the Best Ladies Outfit and Hats with a full card of racing.

In addition to racing, Wolverhampton Racecourse offers a number of excellent facilities which are ideal for conducting your business requirements. The Racecourse boasts an enviable reputation as one of the leading event venues within the West Midlands area, popular for weddings, conferences, exhibitions and outdoor events. The racecourse is able to cater for a wide range of specifications, whilst ensuring your needs are fulfilled with great precision within professional and relaxed surroundings. The on-site recently refurbished Holiday Inn Hotel is well-placed to provide a peaceful night’s sleep once you have enjoyed your evening of hospitality at the racecourse or busy day in conference. More than just a racecourse, the venue, with its range of suites, indoor space and vast outdoor areas, really is a venue for all occasions.

past and present ComBine

for a midweek treat

By John Nash

There’s a clever restaurant juggling act in appealing to a discerning international audience while simultaneously celebrating the colourful heritage of good old-fashioned Black Country grub. Badly executed, it’s guaranteed to be a car crash in the making, but there’s a lesson in success to be found at Faraday’s Restaurant at Brierley Hill’s Copthorne Hotel. It’s a place where the past and present can collide in a dining experience that, if you wish, the taste buds get a flavour of yesteryear. Along with the popular gourmet burgers, steak selection and the predictable fish, chicken and spice appeal, the menu offers a ‘Taste of the Black Country’. I applaud the sense of humour and gentle irony that along with the ‘hardcore’ pork meatballs with black pudding - a tasty take on the region’s beloved faggot - we find chicken balti suet pudding with roasted masala vegetables. Quite what my miner grandfather would have made of that, I can’t imagine, but Asian cuisine has a respectably large chapter in the region’s emerging tastes for whole variety of food. For reasons I’ve never been able to fathom, I’ve always felt slightly uncomfortable dining out at hotels when not a paying guest. I get the feeling of being an interloper and dropping into a place where I don’t wholly belong… memories of being schooled in the art of under-age drinking in a backstreet Netherton pub by non-other than a team captain

in the Methodists’ Table Tennis Temperance League, loom large. My initial apprehensions were quickly allayed when I turned up at Faraday’s. It’s relaxed, the staff are attentive and friendly and it doesn’t exude that slightly stiff, aloof atmosphere of some contemporary four-star competition. Eating out is not just about the food - I foolishly always have high expectations - it’s also about service. Our waitress was excellent and clearly a real asset to the Millennium Hotel chain. Personable, happy to oblige and interested in us having a good experience, she carried out her job faultlessly. Always tempted by fishy dishes, I ordered the tandoori crab fishcakes (£7.00) for starters and my guest, the country coarse pate with plum and apple chutney and toasted onion bread. The fishcakes were served with mango chutney and raita. Two nicely crisp cakes were dished up and the spice additions didn’t swamp

the taste of crab. Dressed with a generous helping of watercress, the chutney and yoghurt-based sauce combined well. Gill’s coarse pate was nearing a hock texture with a bacon-like crust, but the taste won lots of praise. The unusual addition of onion bread was also a nice touch. Surprisingly light, the dish had that Dickensian ‘Oliver Twist’ appeal… ‘Please, sir, I want some more.’ For mains, I favoured the Copthorne pork meatballs (£12.00), stuffed with black pudding and cheese, served with mustard mash, green vegetables and mustard gravy, while Gill ordered the slow cooked lamb (£16.00) with picked tomatoes, sweet potato puree and rocket oil. I can’t honestly imagine the meatballs of gourmet history in the Black Country being so exotic, but there was more than

MERRY HILL 66

town & village life magazine | may/june 2018

a nod at that great local staple of faggots, mushy peas and mash. The meal captured the essence of hearty, comfort food of a bygone time and it would be easy to imagine it being served to hardy metal bashers and miners who helped shape the black by day, black by night region. Frankly, I loved every bit of this fare. The meatballs were rich in taste with

the black pudding punching through with its distinct flavour. The mash was just perfect, all that wholegrain mustard adding an appetising tangy dynamic. What more can a Black Country ‘bloke ask for? With a shared cabbage, leeks and peas (£4.00) side dish I ate my meal with a childlike enthusiasm. Gill’s lamb rump - she doesn’t like it too pink - came out perfectly cooked and she raved about the sweet potato puree. A world apart from my traditionally inspired regional dish, she enjoyed every mouthful.

Washed down with a couple of glasses of Pinot grigio, the meal out made for a welcome mid-week treat. Faradays Restaurant, The Copthorne Hotel, The Waterfront, Level Street, Brierley Hill, West Midlands DY5 1UR. For table reservations please call 01384 482882. www.milleniumhotels.com

On the desserts menu I was tempted with the plum, apple and ginger crumble served with vanilla ice cream. The fruit was not over-cooked, the apple was easily defined, and the crumble not soggy. A man, I suspect with simple tastes, this evergreen recipe never fails to hit the spot for me. Gill’s lemon tart with raspberry sorbet (£6.00) was also well received - light and refreshing.

and help make a dream come true Wolverhampton based children’s charity Promise Dreams are absolutely delighted to be announcing the return of their biggest single fundraising event - Walk for Dreams 2018! You may well have heard the team on Signal’s 107 talking about this year’s event and seen the banner going up around the city! Sunday 1st July will see walkers, family and friends return to the grounds of Himley Cricket Club in Dudley in their thousands to set off on a 9 mile walk to Wolverhampton Racecourse. On arrival, after registration, walkers will be given a warm up to ensure they’re ready for the off and a fullon party atmosphere awaits them at the Racecourse with music, bouncy castles, face painting, refreshments and, most importantly, somewhere to rest your weary feet. As in previous years entry to Walk for Dreams is totally free but walkers are encouraged to get sponsored or fundraise in whatever way they can as this will enable Promise Dreams to raise even more special smiles. There will also be “I walked the walk” t-shirts on sale

at both the start and finish venues for participants of the event. The team at Promise Dreams are hugely grateful to their key partners in this project who, through their generosity, will ensure that every penny raised from the walk will go directly to the families that the charity works to support. This money will make a real difference to some very special children and help to create memories that will be treasured for a lifetime. To sign up or find out more about Walk for Dreams simply visit

www.walkfordreams.co.uk and complete the online registration page. You can sign up individually or as a team so why not recruit as many of your friends and colleagues as you can and then see who can raise the most sponsorship. The website shows the different

amounts in relation to different dream requests so you could even set yourselves a group target and know that you’ll be fulfilling a dream through all your hard work. For a small charity like Promise Dreams volunteer support at a big event like this is crucial so if you would like to help out on the day then you can also register on the same website to volunteer at this event. Promise Dreams are committed to helping seriously and terminally ill children and their families see their precious dreams become reality. Talks Holidays

Summer holiday season is just around the corner and here at Town & Village Life Magazine we can’t wait to pack our bags, hit the beach and top-up our tans. That’s why when it was time to catch up with celebrity hairdresser, Royston Blythe, conversation quickly moved away from hair and on to holidays… so, here’s Royston’s guide to his – and Nick’s – favourite sun-soaked destinations, to get you in the holiday mood too.

together, Nick and I used to holiday on the French Riviera three times a year. Even now, we still love everything about it - St Tropez, Cannes, Monaco, there are so many incredible places to visit and the food, well, it’s amazing! Our favourite restaurant is La Colombe d’Or but really, wherever you go, the quality and choice of food is fabulous. The sense of style and elegance, the chic French boutiques: we love to shop and La

Croisette, Cannes its sheer heaven - luxury shopping at its finest.

TVL: Favourite long haul destination? Royston: We love Dubai and try to jet off there at least once a year - it’s a perfect holiday destination. Nick and I still work full time in our salons, so a seven night stay at the Burj Al Arab is the ultimate opportunity for us

TVL: What’s your best holiday ever? Royston: Our love affair with the Cotes Du Jour dates back many years. When we first got 72

brilliant time and I can’t recommend it enough.

TVL: What’s it like holidaying with the Wards?

to get some much-needed rest and relaxation. Dubai has got it all; opulent hotels, incredible weather, outstanding shopping and amazing beaches. Plus, there’s always plenty to do, whether you’re in rest-mode or party-mode. It’s most definitely an exotic ‘London-By-The-Sea’, last year we had a real giggle out there with The Real Housewives Of Cheshire girls when they were celebrating Stacy Forcey’s 40th birthday, but whether you go with friends or alone, it’s definitely a place to visit.

TVL: Where do you head for a short city break? Royston: It has to Marbs, last summer we headed to Puerto Banus as often as possible. There’s a fun atmosphere, plenty of sunshine, great people, amazing restaurants and of course, Nikki Beach – a great favourite of ours. Plus, it’s so easy to get there, you can check into East Midlands Airport at 5pm on a Saturday and by 11 pm you’re out on The Port – which is ideal for us. In fact, we love it there so much that we decided to treat the entire Royston Blythe team - 27 of us in total - to a celebration weekend for the Red Closing Party at Nikki Beach. We had a www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Royston: It’s always a fabulous, happy, lively family holiday. Daytime is spent by the pool or on the beach having fun with the girls and evenings are huge family dinners and then perhaps partying with Darby and Taylor into the early hours. We all love to shop, so we make sure we squeeze in a few visits to our favourite shopping haunts.

TVL: Any holiday disasters over the years? Royston: Not really, we’re very careful when we book our holidays and generally do lots of research, as well as asking for recommendations from friends. If there was ever a time when we really didn’t like the accommodation or the destination, we’d just relocate or hop on a plane back to the UK. Life’s too short!

We do everything together and always have fun and a laugh wherever we are - even an argument will turn into laughter.

TVL: What’s your favourite thing about coming home? Royston: Seeing Ruby, our poodle, and our little pussy cat, Frankie. They’re adorable and it’s always lovely to come home and have a good cuddle with them both. The next best thing is heading out for some good wholesome food at the Red Cow at Ackleton. Sue and Clive are the proprietors and their service is unbeatable, plus there’s always a really welcoming atmosphere at the restaurant too.

TVL: When your holiday is just around the corner, how do you prepare? Royston: For me, a good spray tan is a perfect thing to get you in the mood for sunshine. I never shop before a holiday as I love to shop whilst I’m there: I need to leave as much room in my suitcase as possible for the journey home.

TVL: What’s your must-pack travel essential? Royston: That would most definitely be Nick; no holiday would be complete without him.

If you’re not happy with how straight your teeth are, we can help. The most common way to correct crooked teeth is fixed brackets or removable aligners, Invisalign. Is teeth straightening right for me? Orthodontics can provide remarkable results, helping with oral hygiene, and giving patients the confidence to smile. Having your teeth straightened need not be an unsightly, painful or lengthy treatment. There are two options Removable Braces or Fixed Braces.

Removable option: Invisalign. Our removable option clear, custom-made removable aligners such as Invisalign are almost invisible. We can scan your teeth with our ITero Scanner to show you how your teeth can look straight with the simulation program. Once you proceed with Invisalign we will then produce a clin check for you. This shows you how each of your teeth move to produce your straight smile.

New strength and resilience massage at

Wollaston Beauty Clinic

Now that summer is here, there has never been a better time to treat your body to a luxurious and indulgent massage from luxury spa brand, ESPA.

Pampering both body and mind, the new ‘Strength and Resilience’ massage promises amazing results. As Jenny Birch explains: “This new signature treatment takes its inspiration from the Painted Lady butterfly and reflects its life journey.” The treatment starts with the client inhaling pure aromatherapeutic formulas of eucalyptus and menthol, before enjoying the warmth and softness of their very own cocoon. “Through swaddling with stimulating acupressure points up and down your body, gentle strokes and stretches become progressively swifter and more pressure is applied as the massage progresses.” Next, feet are in for a real treat: “The wonderful reflex zone foot massage stimulates major organs - together with a scalp massage - to balance both your body and mind. This is followed by a really invigorating back massage, which serves as a wake up call for clients.” Unlike treatments that soothe you into a slumber, the back massage is both rejuvenating and invigorating. “Knots in shoulders get ironed out and at the end you’ll feel really refreshed; it’s 80 minutes of pure bliss.” But, don’t just take our word for it, because there have

84

been plenty of delighted clients at the salon: “I’m so impressed with this massage,” says Wollaston Beauty Clinic’s client, Janet Smith. “I’d been having physiotherapy and was quite stressed before I had my massage, but after my treatment my body felt relieved of tension and my mind clear and balanced. The combination of having my feet, head and neck cared for at the same time felt amazing, and the deep breathing settled my anxiety. The pain relief in my joints and muscles continued into the following weeks as I used both the Fitness Shower Oil and the Muscle Balm Rescue. I would totally recommend this massage to anyone, it’s amazing.” • Somewhere between the gold of Morocco and the green of England, a Painted Lady butterfly emerges from her cocoon, and stretches into her new wings, ready to face her onward journey. Inspired by the resilience of the Painted Lady butterfly, this treatment brings clarity to the mind and boosts energy levels. Emerge ready to face life’s unexpected journeys.

From now until the end of June Town & Village Life readers can get 25% off a Strength & Resilience Massage. Normally priced at £80 you can get this all-embracing massage for only £60. Also on offer with 25% off and priced at £60 is our brand new 80 minute Deep Tissue Massage. A classic full body massage, suitable for men and woman alike. If treatments aren’t your thing then consider ESPA’S brand new Muscle Rescue Balm, £30 for 70g, which you apply to muscles before and/or after exercise, massaging into your legs with upward movements, and going round and round arms, neck and shoulders. This aromatherapeutic blend of pepper and eucalyptus, clove bud and West Indian bay oils will also focus your mind and clear your sinuses. Or perhaps ESPA’S Fitness Shower Oil, a beautifully rich, naturally foaming oil to cleanse and soothe body and mind. The team at Wollaston Beauty Clinic are all expertly trained and are very confident in helping you to select the correct product and treatment for you whatever the time of year so why not call in or book today?

Find your new season look aT 88

town & village life magazine | may/june 2018

Summer is almost here and there’s never been a better time to update your style with an amazing new cut and colour look. Whether you’ve got a style in mind or are unsure of where to start, you’ll want to hear what the experts at award-winning salon, Royston Blythe, have to say before you book your appointment. So, to bring you all the advice that you need, we caught-up with Nick.

Tailor trends to you

“A classic bob never goes too far from the radar and this season we love the longer length bob that is super versatile, multifunctional and can be adapted to suit every occasion. “To keep a look personalised to you, ask for soft layers that will frame your face and add a modern twist using colour - your hairdresser should tailor your colour to ensure you achieve a unique look. This season’s ‘Lob’ calls for tousled texture. “The end result will be determined by the colour you choose. For those who like their hair to make a statement, consider icy platinum tones – think Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley at the Tom Ford Show - or strong global colours. If you wish for a more subtle look, speak with your colourist about how they can incorporate soft tones using babylights or a root stretch technique - Alexa Chung’s a fan.”

Passionate about creating looks to suit the individual, Nick believes that every trend and fashion-focussed look should be completely tailored to suit you. As he explains:

Opt for a crop

“You can adapt your look to reflect a seasonal trend but it is most important to remember that you need to create a look that is completely suited to enhancing your personal features and complementing your sense of style.

“Katie Holmes has very recently revolutionised her look for spring and hit the front page headlines after ditching her classic bob for a quirky, super-short pixie crop. Indeed, the power of a hair transformation can be incredible, so it’s important to visit a hairdressing specialist that can use expert colouring and faceshaping techniques to ensure that your new short hairstyle will enhance your best features.

“Never assume that just because a colour or style looks good on the catwalk or the celebrity of the moment that it is going to look as good on you. You need professional advice from specialists who are trained to help you look the best version of yourself.” And a good haircut can have amazing results: “We love to embrace the individual features, complexions, personalities and desires of all our clients and then create a bespoke cut and colour.”

Mid-length is the new long For spring/summer 2018 midlength styles are a must. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Whatever your age, your face shape and your style, there is a short elfin-like crop to suit you. Here’s how to find it:

“Texture, sweeping fringes and soft, face-framing layers will keep your style looking ultra-feminine and flattering. High impact blondes and statement reds are a perfect match with an iconic pixie crop, and this season there is an abundance of beautiful and striking blonde tones to choose from.”

Time for some TLC If your hair is in need of some TLC head straight to the salon. “An in-salon treatment will serve to nourish, hydrate and condition

your hair, ready for the summer months that are fast approaching. “Olaplex is an amazing treatment that can be added on to your colour treatment or used alone. It repairs the bonds within the hair shaft and the result is super shiny, silky tresses.”

Turn up the volume Hair extensions don’t just add length, they can be used to create a voluminous look and, they offer colour without chemicals too. “We love Rapture’s tape-in hair extensions as they’re quick and easy to fit and cause absolutely no damage to the hair.”

Make an investment Look after your new look with the help of some fabulous products. “When you visit your hairdresser for a beautiful colour, it’s very important that you invest in prescribed home care products that will ensure your hair colour is long-lasting, protected and able to keep your locks wellnourished,” adds Nick. So, why not say goodbye to tired tresses and hello to luxurious locks with the help of the Royston Blythe team this summer?

Styling You founder Libby Walton, is ready and waiting to help. With an eye for style, a passion for fashion and years of styling experience - not to mention multiple industry qualifications – Libby has long been helping both ladies and gents find an amazing new look. “Ever since I can remember I’ve been asked by family and friends for advice on what to wear, calling on me to help them look and feel their best whatever the occasion” says Libby. After a career in various sales and marketing roles, Libby went on to retrain as a personal stylist and image consultant in London, before setting-up her own business, Styling You, in 2011. “I’m a fully qualified personal stylist and image consultant, and since starting the business

seven years ago I’ve worked with men and women of all ages.” Despite Libby’s obvious love of clothes, her real passion is helping her clients to build their confidence and rediscover their individual style. “It is incredibly rewarding to see how my clients are completely transformed after I’ve styled them. Not only do they look amazing, but their self-image and confidence is massively boosted too.” And, Libby quickly establishes a rapport with her clients thanks to her friendly disposition. “I work with men and women who sometimes only see what is wrong with them. My job is to teach them to see what is right and embrace what they love about themselves.” We’ve all agonised over what to wear at times but for some women – and men - it can become an everyday struggle.

“At certain times in your life it’s easy to feel really down about your appearance, maybe following a relationship breakdown or after having children and finding clothes that really suit you can give you just the boost that you need.” Of course, there are plenty of other reasons to treat yourself to a personal styling session too. “With the right advice you can find your show stopping look for that all-important special occasion, find your everyday look or even dress for success at work.” And, Libby even offers a dedicated styling service for brides-to-be which caters for the entire wedding party. Libby’s styling sessions begin in her client’s home where she takes time to establish their ‘wardrobe personality’. “There are a lot of factors to consider initially, such as the client’s body shape, lifestyle and budget.” Keen to find the clothes that suit the individual, Libby works hard to tailor a look that’s perfect for them.

Her services include an in-depth ‘Colour Analysis’ which provides her clients with a useful tool in finding colours that are incredibly flattering, whist eliminating the ones that aren’t. “People are always amazed by the results of my colour analysis; it’s the session that has the biggest impact on my clients. Once they’ve had it done they have the confidence to know exactly which colours to choose whenever they go shopping in the future. It’s a real investment.” Taking into consideration your hair, eye and skin colour Libby provides you with a comprehensive guide of your very own ‘wow colours,’ along with a fabric swatch complete with each hue that’s right for you. “Many of us have a wardrobe that’s filled with unworn items and often that’s because we’ve bought impulse buys that just aren’t the right colour or shape.” As part of her ‘Wardrobe Detox’ service Libby sorts through your wardrobe to style outfits for you, advises you which clothes you should be wearing – as well as those you shouldn’t – and provides you with a

wardrobe ‘wish list’ of the items she thinks are missing, enabling you to create that go to capsule wardrobe. “The wish list often includes classic pieces like a white shirt, a pencil skirt and a flattering pair of jeans.” If you want Libby to help you find those must-haves then she is more than happy to hit the shops and do the hard work so that you don’t have to. “When the wish list has been completed I already know my client really well, so it’s easy for me to go shopping with them or for them to find the pieces that they need.” When she’s not busy with clients though, Libby is teaching students how to ‘dress for success’ at schools and colleges across the Midlands at dedicated style workshops. “There are so many facets to the work that I do and I really enjoy working with both new and returning clients,” adds Libby. Whatever the job, there’s no doubt that Libby will be delighting someone with an amazing wardrobe transformation.

So, if you think it’s time for a change why not let Libby style your amazing new look and create a versatile wardrobe that’s perfect for you. t: 07398 762447 e: libbystyleyou@gmail.com w: www.stylingyou.co.uk Follow me on twitter @libbystyleyou www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

great looking legs fOr The suMMer if you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort.

If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal.

VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.

During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.

Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and women being affected equally.

Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For further information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk

Protect your eyes this summer Spending time outdoors can be a great way to unwind during the longer summer days; be it on holiday on the beach, walking, sight-seeing or just spending more time in the garden. We all know that our skin can burn in the sun, yet it is estimated that around 50% of people don’t protect their eyes by wearing sunglasses. (Even though our eyes are up to ten times more sensitive to ultraviolet rays than skin). UV is in the invisible part of the light spectrum therefore we can’t see it or feel it, but prolonged exposure has been linked to a range of vision problems such as cataract, pinguecula- harmless but unsightly yellow fatty deposits in the white of the eye, eyelid skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma and development of macular degeneration. It is especially important to protect children’s eyes. Because of larger pupils and clearer lenses, they are more susceptible to sun damage. Plus, despite children generally spending more time outdoors than adults, 70% of them still don’t wear sunglasses in the sun.

Therefore when choosing sunglasses make sure that they carry a CE mark (a European standard of UV protection) or UV 400 sign. Photochromic lenses offer great sun protection as they darken to a sunglasses tint when exposed to sunlight absorbing 100% of UV and return to a clear state when indoors, which means that you only need one pair- convenient for holidays and sightseeing trips. Maui Jim sunglasses use supreme polarised technology which goes beyond shielding your eyes from glare and harmful UV to reveal and enhance the world’s true vivid colours in amazing detail. A wide range of lens finishes are available, such as Blue, Green, Rose mirror as well as more traditional grey and brown.

Even glasses with clear lenses can offer protection from UV eye damage. In fact, dark lenses which do not offer a sufficient level of UV protection can be more damaging because they cause the eye’s pupils to dilate providing a bigger window to allow UV in than if you had no sunglasses on.

1/2 price polarised sunglasses Offer valid with premium lenses, T&Cs apply, offer ends 30th June 2018 (selected ranges only)

Proud to Boast!

WORKING WITH ONE OF THE WORLD’S FOREMOST INJECTABLE SURGEONS For several years now, The Cottage Surgery has been working in partnership with one of the world’s foremost Injectable Surgeons, Mr Ash Labib. He is known in the UK for being at the ‘very cutting edge’ of providers of Injectable Medical Aesthetic Treatments. Surgeon Ash Labib is the UK Ambassador for Allergan, the originator and exclusive supplier of the genuine ‘Botox’ product. Used for medical treatments such as Hyperhidrosis, (excessive sweating), Migraine control, and the reduction of spasms in children Botox is now widely known as a way to reduce the signs of ageing. It was Ash Labib’s day job as the E.N.T. Surgeon at two of the Midlands’ premier NHS Hospitals, Russell’s Hall and New Cross, that inspired him to develop the use of Dermal Fillers, (another essential tool in the battle against the signs of ageing), for a very different treatment. Along with a very select few, Ash has developed the use of Dermal Fillers to provide Rhinoplasty (Nose jobs to you and me) and nasal Reconstruction. This pioneering new treatment can amazingly be completed in your lunch hour! Ash Labib does of course, utilise dermal fillers in the more traditional sense, i.e. filling those lines that occur through the natural ageing process, or to reduce scars left by acne, accidents or childhood diseases such as Chicken Pox. It is experience gained as a surgeon in the E.N.T. field that has led him

to develop nasal reconstruction without the need of a scalpel.

friends, family and work colleagues, but even strangers in the street.

Many people are unhappy with their nose shape, either being ‘born with it’ or, because of an accident, or illness. In any event, how we look, can have an effect on how others perceive us.

Using Ash’s non-invasive techniques, there are very rarely any telltale signs, and there’s no need to take time away from work. Many patients really value this ultimately discreet way of achieving their goal.

The usual remedy was to ‘go under the knife’ and undertake invasive surgery. Not only does this traditional surgical intervention require the essential use of a general anaesthetic with the usual risks this entails, but also several weeks away from work or from social commitments. It also results in very obvious and substantial bruising with the possibility of scarring, temporary or otherwise, post treatment aftercare, and sometimes the need for additional corrective surgery. All invasive surgery carries with it the risk of infection as we all now know with the rise of super bugs such as Clostridium Difficile, (known as C-Diff in the press/media) however good the surgical resources are. Ash’s skills in utilising dermal fillers in place of the scalpel usually remove ALL of the above downsides. Very often Ash can provide the desired aesthetic results in under half an hour, and virtually always within the time we take for our lunch break. Genuinely, a good percentage of his patient’s leave his treatment room and go straight back to work. Some patients not only choose to use Ash’s filler-based expertise to avoid the above issues, but also because they feel embarrassed by their desire to remodel this important facial feature. They know the associated bruising will be evidence of surgery, to not only

The Cottage Surgery offers Ash’s services because they are aware that his skills in the use of both wrinkle relaxing injections and Dermal Fillers is second to none in the UK. Ash’s skill was initially brought to the attention of the Surgery through his international training and teaching business, where he is able to spread the word on his development of filler-based Rhinoplasty. The Surgery is confident that you can benefit from his 22 years of E.N.T. experience, years of Medical Aesthetic injectable treatment development, and innate understanding of his patients’ requirements. “Amazingly, due to our special partnership with Surgeon Ash, we are able to offer entirely FREE CONSULTATIONS, for his patients, during which you will be medically assessed by him and be able to tell him of your aesthetic concerns. Please also note that all consultations held at The Cottage Surgery come with no obligation to have treatments following your consultation, and are also entirely free of charge. Worthwhile peace-of-mind. We do ask for a small deposit to advance book and secure your consultation, but this is returned directly to you on the day.” To book a free and no obligation consultation with Ash Labib, call us on 01384 940497 or visit our website www.cottage-surgery.co.uk

Before and after pictures of one of Ash's patients - without the use of a scalpel! “Ash, I came to see you after I had Rhinoplasty 10 years ago, abroad. I was very unhappy with the results. But when you performed the non-surgical Rhinoplasty on my nose, it was an amazing result which has changed my nose on the outside to my desired shape, and gave me all the confidence and reassurance from the inside as well! I thank you so much for the revolutionary treatment.” Chris

Turn back the clock on ageing skin, or simply maintain your youthful glow, with

The Luminaire Clinic more than 10 years ago and is now in its third generation.

“This advanced technology enables us to gently target heat energy deep into the structural layers of the skin to kick-start the body’s healing response, which in turn naturally increases collagen levels in the tissue,” explains Hayley. It’s this increase in collagen that results in a younger, more refreshed appearance where the signs of ageing are reduced.

Netta and Hayley Hubball

If you want to turn the clock back on those tell-tale signs of ageing or simply make your skin look amazing, then a visit to The Luminaire Clinic is a must. Specialists in non-surgical and natural skin tightening and lifting treatments, the Tettenhallbased business brings the latest and best skincare technology to Wolverhampton. As co-owner, Netta Hubball explains: “We’re really proud of the highend treatments that we offer our clients here at Luminaire. We’re a nurse-led clinic and the technology that we use is the same as you’d find in London’s Harley Street but at a fraction of the cost.” And, there’s no compromise on the delivery, because Netta – and her daughter, co-owner Hayley Hubball, are both highly trained and passionate about the services they provide. “Hayley and I, along with the rest of the Luminaire team, work to only the highest possible standards in every aspect of the business.” With a shared love of beauty, Netta and Hayley researched the marketplace carefully before establishing the business to 100

ensure that they could bring their clients something really special. Realising that through their partnership they were able to understand the skincare needs of both mature and young people, the mother and daughter team soon discovered they could bring treatments to the clinic that catered for both age groups. “I understand what more mature women want when it comes to fighting the signs of ageing and Hayley – who’s 21 – is in-tune with what people of her generation look for in terms of non-surgical treatments.” That’s why Netta and Hayley make the perfect team.

“As collagen increases there’s a natural lifting and tightening of the skin, which serves to provide the results that have delighted our clients.” Invested in ensuring that its patients get the best results, the clinic uses only the very latest technology when delivering its treatments. “There are other companies out there that are offering similar treatments to ours, but often they cut corners when it comes to delivering the required number of shots to achieve maximum effects.” Luminaire however, deliver the best, both in terms of service and product. “We guarantee that our intensive treatment is second-to-none, that’s why we will not compromise on any aspect to compete with cheaper alternatives.”

“We have both undergone extensive training at one of the country’s most respected skincare institutions, The Skin Repair Clinic. And, although our business is our own, we work closely with the clinic – that has locations in London’s Harley Street, Birmingham and Bristol - to bring clients the most up-to-date technology.” When it comes to treatments, The Luminaire Clinic’s clients have achieved amazing results with their High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) skin treatment, a FDA-approved technology that was brought to the UK from America by The Skin Repair Group town & village life magazine | may/june 2018

And, there’s another amazing treatment on offer at Luminaire too: “Collagen Induction Therapy – also known as Micro-needling - is our other speciality. It’s amazing at dealing with skin issues like acne scarring, wrinkles, stretch marks, pigmentation and cellulite.” A special device, called the Innopen (the latest technology available), works to stimulate growth factors and promote the production of collagen and elastin by creating tiny punctures in the skin. “This process creates a natural healing response within the skin, resulting in a significant improvement to the texture and tone of the skin, as well as new firmness and a reduction in scars, pore size and stretch marks.” Many clients at Luminaire are now enjoying beautiful skin after completing their course of treatment. “For the very best outcome it’s important to follow the recommended course of sessions.”

It’s not just locals that are benefitting from what Luminaire have to offer though as many clients are travelling from outside of the city to treat their skin to one of the clinic’s amazing treatments. And, that’s a real testament to just how exceptional both the clinic’s treatments and service really are. “We provide a free consultation for all of our clients when they come to the clinic and we give a full explanation of the expectations from treatment. We then book our client’s appointment to fit in with their busy schedules.” Each treatment package at Luminaire includes an extensive aftercare service and the team don’t spare any expense when it comes to spending time with their clients. “We’re always available to talk our clients through the treatments and answer their questions. We want them to have a full understanding of how the treatments work and how they’ll be delivered.”

There’s a specialist organic skincare range available at the clinic that complements the treatments by serving to rejuvenate and boost the skin’s repair cycle. “Excitingly we’re working in collaboration with an organic skincare developer to provide our clients with salon grade products that are packed with vitamins and nutrients.” And, there’s been plenty of positive feedback: “Clients that are using the range have absolutely loved the results and have said that their skin has shown huge signs of improvement.” When you begin your treatment with Luminaire you can rest assured that you’ll be enjoying real value-for-money. “Our prices are higher compared to those of run-of-the-mill beauty services, like facials, because you get so much more. A facial makes your skin feel great for 24 hours, whereas our treatments’ effects may be slower to start but can last for up to three years,” says Netta. Indeed, when you choose The Luminaire Clinic you’re making an investment in your skin. “We’re passionate about making our clients look – and feel amazing – and we’re committed to bringing cutting edge technology to our clinic, so that our clients can enjoy having fabulous skin, adds Hayley.” So, why not make your skin look amazing too? Staff Show Their True Mettle In

Wolf Run Charity Challenge

West Midlands Hospital staff showed their true mettle by completing a Wolf Run challenge to raise £750 for charity. Intrepid employees from different departments teamed up for the muddy event on Sunday 8th April to support the mental health charity - Dudley MIND. The Wolf Run took place at Welsh Road Farm in Warwickshire and was a combination of mud runs, trail runs and obstacle runs. The hardcore 10 kilometre run took place across raw, natural terrain including open ground, lakes, woodland and thick mud and was a test of physical and mental strength and stamina. Team members included Quality Improvement Manager Tania Peters, Engineer Dave Watts, Housekeeping Team Leader Julie Carter, Physiotherapy Lead Helen Hunt and Private Patient Co-ordinator Kerry Williams. MIND is a mental health charity that helps thousands of people

every year and West Midlands Hospital is supporting the local branch, Dudley MIND, to help local people who use the services that Dudley MIND provide.

Kerry Williams said: “The Wolf Run was an incredible experience and one I’ll never forget. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done.”

Every year, one in four people experience a mental health problem and hundreds of thousands of people are still struggling with an issue.

Julie Carter said: “We wanted to do something different this year to support a very worthy local cause.

The group, wearing West Midlands Hospital team t-shirts, gave it their all on the day and are now looking to enter other Wolf Runs in the future.

“Our engineer Dave Watts has taken part in a number of Wolf Runs before and he suggested it as a fun event to take part in and raise money at the same time. “The event was absolutely amazing and I’m so glad we’ve done it. As a team we all feel an enormous sense of achievement and are really pleased to support Dudley MIND at the same time. “I’d like to say a big thankyou to all the staff who have donated generously to the cause and to people who supported us on the day.” West Midlands Hospital, based in Halesowen, is a private hospital and provides services and treatments for private patients, insured patients and those referred through the NHS. It specialises in a range of surgeries including Cosmetic Surgery, orthopaedic procedures, foot and ankle surgery, general surgery and gynaecology.

Can you believe it?

When you are delivered into this world, you arrive with only two fears - being dropped and loud noises. Every other belief or fear is created by your experience of the world around you and the people in it. You create your own world by the one you grow up in during your early years. If you were nurtured and loved, with lots of physical affection and support, you will, most probably, be someone who enjoys and requires the same behaviour in your own relationships. However, if your early years were without love and affection, you may have a very different view of how to conduct your relationships today.

Being aware of our beliefs is key to creating change. If you want to change something that you do, understand where that behaviour came from. For example, I often have clients who struggle with believing in their own self worth. When we start to look at their childhood, often a lack of affection or an unkind comment is the root of the problem. If someone in authority – a teacher or parent etc - keeps telling you you’re stupid, you will eventually believe them!

resource. A word of warning though! If you want to delve into the past, do it with a positive intention. Look at incidents that were a problem and see where you feel the lesson may be. Avoid blaming anyone – including yourself – and be aware of getting emotionally upset or angry. This is an exercise in positive gain. Imagine being a stranger, watching the experience, without knowing whom the people are, or what is happening. What do you think is going on? Write down your thoughts, as if you knew nothing about the situation. Now see the problem with the experience and emotional intelligence you have today. What would you advise a close friend about what has happened? Finally, what is the belief you have about this situation? Is it really as you originally thought? Whose beliefs are they – yours or someone else’s?

By looking to the past for clues to present behaviour, you have a powerful

“If you think your life has lost its sparkle, or you feel something is missing, maybe there is something holding you back, stopping you from seeing things clearly. If this is you, it may help to share that with someone and get tools and techniques to make the changes you didn’t feel capable of doing on your own. I specialise in helping people clear personal blocks and issues that stop them from living a life of fun and fearlessness.” Sue Wilkinson

revealed that the cartilage in his left knee was completely worn and he suggested a total knee replacement.

He added: “West Midlands Hospital is a fantastic private hospital and the care you receive is top class...

Thomas, of Kingswinford said: “I didn’t stop playing golf but my knee was becoming more and more of a problem and it was painful at work too.

“This was my first visit but I’m looking at having my right knee done as well so the hospital would definitely be my first choice for future surgery.”

“So I decided to have the left knee done and it was the best thing I’ve ever done. My quality of life has improved massively.”

Thomas is swinging a club much more freely after a total knee replacement at West Midlands Hospital. The 67-year-old had struggled with his left knee for over two years but he continued to battle through the pain barrier at home and at work.

Thomas is fully enjoying his weekly games of golf at local golf clubs which include Chesterton Valley Golf Club and Halfpenny Green Golf Club.

But when it started to affect his mobility and the pain was keeping him awake at night he went to see his GP for an X-Ray.

He said: “I haven’t been playing golf all that long but I love the game and since the operation walking and playing feels so much better.

Thomas was referred to see West Midlands Hospital hip and knee specialist Mr Matthew Waites who

“I can also flex my knees more when I’m addressing the ball which wasn’t comfortable before the surgery.”

Thomas Scott is full of praise for West Midlands Hospital following his knee surgery

Implant Retained Dentures Say goodbye to denture adhesives, sore spots and embarrassing moments with implant retained dentures that have a bite comparable to natural teeth. Dental implants will hold your dentures firmly in place. An implant-retained denture is a type of over-denture that is retained by attachments to implants. A regular denture rests on the gums, and is not retained by implants, this is why they can move easily and rub. Dental Implants can be used for all kinds of restorations. At Halfway House we use implants as a substitute for the root portions of your missing teeth. As a biocompatible material, the implant will gently fuse with your jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. This makes your dentures a more natural part of you. With a more secure fit, you can talk, eat and laugh freely without having to worry about what your dentures are doing.

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Advantages of implant retained dentures include: • Less denture base covering the roof of your mouth • A stable and secure fit of your dentures to your gums - no more embarrassing moments caused by loose dentures • Improved taste and speech with less denture base • A bite comparable to your own natural teeth • Markedly improves your ability to chew with greater enjoyment of food • Improved digestion and well being • No more pressure points or sore spots • Implants help to maintain your facial structures by preserving the remaining bone in your jaws. • Minimises wrinkles around the mouth by restoring lost lip-support. A lower denture may only need two conventional implants to give a completely life-changing transformation to your ability to chew foods, and smile with confidence. An alternative to this is four ‘mini’ implants – this requires very minimal surgery, and in many cases your current denture can be attached to these immediately. It is amazing to see the transformation we can produce at Halfway House in just ninety minutes of treatment, and only fifteen to twenty minutes of this is actual surgery!

Problems: • Lower teeth missing or failing: • Remaining teeth unable to support a denture or bridge. • Loose, uncomfortable, or poorly fitting denture. Solutions: Implants supporting a denture: • A cost-effective way of replacing many missing teeth • Can be removed for cleaning. • Very secure but still allows some movement during normal chewing. Alternatives: Complete conventional denture: • Lack of confidence and comfort due to limitation in what can be eaten. • Possible impairment of eating, speech, or confidence. • The pressure from an unsupported conventional denture during chewing reduces the blood supply to the gums and contributes to accelerated bone shrinkage. • Dentures will need to be regularly relined and replaced every few years.

neW partnership

launch brings together health-driven services Paycare has welcomed the first four organisations to its new signposting service aimed at enhancing its Policyholders’ wellbeing from head to toe. The not-for-profit has launched its latest initiative, Paycare Partners, a brand new service aimed at bringing together like-minded businesses to cover the core aspects of health and wellbeing including leisure and culture, financial and legal, and personal development. The service has seen Paycare partner with organisations whose values align with its own, including Medstars, an online platform aimed at making it easier to find regulated and proven medical specialists,

helping Paycare’s Policyholders find the right solution the first time. Paycare Partners has also welcomed on board PG Mutual, an ethical income protection specialist designed to provide financial support in the event of an illness or injury, and Cornish Mutual which is offering the personal and straight-forward service of Affiliate Home Insurance. Wolverhampton Grand Theatre is also on board and able to offer Policyholders in the region exclusive discounts to shows including ballet, opera, musicals, and concerts.

Anthony Burns, Commercial Director at Paycare, explained: “Whilst Health Cash Plans are at the very core of our business, we’re about so much more and are committed to helping individuals benefit from optimum health and wellbeing on a wider scale – whether it’s financial, family or fitness-related. “We recognised that finding a service via Google is hard work, especially when you don’t have any prior knowledge of an organisation or what it stands for. We launched Paycare Partners as a resource tool for Policyholders which they can use to find vital services which fall outside of our remit, but which our Partner organisations can absolutely help with – and whose values align with our very own.” Existing Paycare Policyholders can get in touch with any of its partner organisations directly via its website www.paycare.org.

Higgs’ ‘Peakys’ take on Peaks

An intrepid group of legal professionals are taking on the daunting National Three Peaks Challenge this summer to raise much needed funds for Dudley Mind. The 10 colleagues from Black Country law firm Higgs & Sons have dubbed themselves ‘The Peaky Climbers’, in a nod to popular BBC gangster drama Peaky Blinders which filmed many of its scenes at The Black Country Living Museum. Katie Willems, a Solicitor in the Corporate Team at Higgs, said the challenge to raise funds for Dudley Mind - Higgs’ Charity of the Year - had attracted volunteers from across the Team. 112

“There are lawyers, non-lawyers and Partners taking part. We have set ourselves a target of £3,500 which is quite steep (excuse the pun) – but probably reflects how deep we need to dig to complete the challenge!” The Peaky Climbers will attempt to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon all within the space of 24 hours on July 6 and 7. They are currently in training for the task, and aiming to complete as many training sessions together as a team. Training is being held across the Midlands at locations including the Long Mynd, Castleton and the Malvern Hills. Katie added: “If anyone is able to donate to help us reach our fundraising goal for this fantastic cause, please visit: https:// localgiving.org/fundraising/ peakyclimbers/ . On behalf of the whole team, thank you very much in anticipation of your generosity and support.”

Dudley Mind is a local mental health charity that aims to improve and promote recovery and wellbeing for people in the Dudley borough affected by poor mental health. Higgs & Sons’ extensive CSR programme supports a range of projects throughout the region each year. As well as selecting a dedicated charity of the year, Higgs’ employees also provide hands on support to many other organisations, committing time and resources in support of the work they do within the Black Country and the wider West Midlands. www.higgsandsons.co.uk www.dudleymind.org.uk

Switching your ISA

is easy, so why don’t more people do it? Are people missing out by not switching their ISA? It’s possibly a perception that there are 100 forms or a list of hoops that must be jumped through before your ISA could be considered for transfer from one provider to another. That’s a myth! In the most part, a couple of short forms are all it takes and the provider you are transferring to takes care of everything, they even contact the existing provider. Dudley Building Society requests are progressed within 24 hours from receipt so it won’t be long until the transfer is complete and you are ready to continue to save in the 18/19 tax year. The range of ISAs available across the market provides many choices for individuals with different financial circumstances, so no one should be afraid to go and discuss the possibilities with their local bank or building society. In most cases, and especially in that of Dudley Building Society, there are friendly, knowledgeable advisers who are on hand and happy to discuss what accounts may be best suited to someone’s specific saving requirements. The Society’s ISA range includes a 45 day notice, one and five year fixed, instant access and junior account options as well as loyalty ISAs for existing Society members.

From Success to Success

This year the Newbridge achievements have been outstanding. Not only have we been ranked 14th in the country by the Sunday Times Independent Prep Schools league tables but we have seen unprecedented success in senior school entrances and performing arts.

Eleven at Eleven Plus We are pleased to share Newbridge Preparatory School’s successful year at Eleven Plus. Eleven girls have been offered places by the Wrekin and Wolverhampton Consortium; securing places at Wolverhampton Girls’ High School and Newport Girls’ High School for September 2018. The girls scored very highly, one girl scoring 397 and the average score of the eleven girls was 350; statistically much higher than the lowest entry score. Over the past three years our success rate of places offered in the year has averaged around 50%. However, this year our success rate on maintained Grammar School and High School www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

offers is, an unprecedented, 85%. This is astounding given that, statistically based on the number of girls who apply from Newbridge and the number of places on offer, we should achieve less than one place. Congratulations to you all!

Senior Independent School Offers and Scholarships Nine of the thirteen girls also applied for independent school places with 100% success rate. The nine girls have been offered 18 places at a variety of local independent schools including Wolverhampton Grammar School (7 places), St. Dominic’s Grammar School (5 places), King Edward VI High School for Girls, Edgbaston (3 places), Shrewsbury High School (1 place), Tettenhall College (1 place) and Wrekin College (1 place). Collectively, the girls have secured six scholarships: • King Edward VI High School for Girls, Edgbaston - Two Academic Scholarships • St Dominic’s Grammar School Two Performing Arts Scholarship • Shrewsbury High School - Music and Academic Scholarship

Choices All that remains now is for the girls and their parents to make their choices from the options they have created. We are so very proud of each and every one of our thirteen Year Six girls. I know we will find the right school for each of you as individuals.

Dudley Festival of Dance, Drama and Music All of the girls in Upper School have the opportunity to perform at the Dudley Festival of Dance, Drama and Music. This year they achieved ten firsts, ten seconds and four third places in drama. There were additional firsts in music classes for senior strings, piano and voice. The School Senior Recorder Group also achieved a first place in Recorder Consort Class securing Newbridge 15 first places in the festival. To read more about the school please visit the school website (www.newbridgeprepschool. org.uk) and take the opportunity to read our ‘Excellent’ (Ofsted equivalent – Outstanding) ISI Inspection report at www. isi.net/school/newbridgepreparatory-school-6725 . 117

A NEW SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step

That single step was an email from former student Professor Keith Morrison (OW 1967) who contacted the School about a year ago hoping to start a discussion about teaching, learning and modern education. The email evolved to a Skype call between Kathy Crewe-Read and staff from St Paul’s School, Macau and the first flicker of a shared journey emerged.

Discipline), Carmen Yu (School Counsellor) and Manel Machado (Head of IT services) have enjoyed a reciprocal visit to Wolverhampton Grammar School and students from both schools are getting very excited about the prospects for gap year placements, student and staff exchanges and much more. Like Wolverhampton Grammar School, St Paul’s have won many awards for their visionary approach to education. The use of digital technology is firmly

embedded in their day-to-day school life, to the extent that they have been ‘paperless’ for some five years. St Paul’s want to learn much from us including how we teach creative disciplines such as Art, how everyone in our School has the responsibility for pastoral support and how teachers use different techniques in the classroom to get students to better engage in lessons. Watch out for more news about this emerging partnership.

Wolverhampton Grammar School and St Paul’s School have almost 6000 miles between them, but what we lack in proximity, we more than make up for in shared ideas and values. A delegation of staff from Wolverhampton Grammar School went to Macau in January and discovered many areas where we might profitably work together. Staff from St Paul’s, including Father Dr Alejandro Salcedo Garcia (the Head), Philip Lai (Head of Curriculum), Joyce Lam (Head of 118

St i l l Sw i n g i n g

Mark Twain said when reading his obituary, “reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated.”

By Rob Taylor

Remember this the next time someone asserts: ‘golf is dead.’ The game may be in the rough when compared to the heady days back when Tiger Woods was in his pomp, but dead? I don’t think so. Strictly speaking, participation rates are down a touch nationwide and so too are viewing figures and, yes, Nike and Adidas no longer make golf clubs, but, as ever, much of this hysteria is driven by ignorance of context. Such statistics are wielded like a toddler playing with a loaded gun, delivered by pundits with an axe to grind. Golf is a sport to be enjoyed by everyone. Like so many other

sports today it is in the throes of coping with a seismic change: how to keep pace with our high-speed society, how to marry the principles of the old school with the needs of the new. Undoubtedly the game has a broad appeal on a number of levels: it’s a highly sociable and competitive game with a handicap system designed to allow players of mixed abilities to play together. It’s a pastime that should appeal to all generations. If there’s any issue at all it is in the struggle to attract, and retain, significant numbers of young people. It would therefore be more accurate to say that the problem is not golf itself — a very hard game that I have tried (and failed) to play many times – but the way that its traditional format impedes the fast flow of modern life; that, and the way it has been characterised for generations. Much has been and is being done by the sport’s governing bodies to combat this issue. The Golf Express initiative recognises that in modern life there’s rarely time

122

for the four hours needed to play an 18-hole game. It aims to create greater availability of 9-hole golf and other short formats and since its trial in Staffordshire in 2016 it has gone from strength to strength. The ‘Get into Golf’ website shows a sport determined to embrace the youth of today – as well many other groups of society who fear the game is not for them. Its message attacks the notion that golf is elitist and difficult to break into and is at pains to point out that it’s not just for “middleaged men in plaid trousers.” However, inevitably, an image problem pervades. But frankly, this is more the fault of the general public, not keeping up with the status quo and unwittingly reinforcing stereotypes at every turn. The sport itself is doing its best to evolve, bending over backwards to accommodate millennials at more or less every opportunity. Peel away the materialistic differences and nothing separates

town & village life magazine | may/june 2018

a 17-year-old from a 70-year-old. Bottom line: they both love the game. After years of denying this most clubs have taken notice and lightened up a little on some of their rules, some progressive clubs even see the value of having a youth representative on their committee. Furthermore, prohibitive cost is another issue where great improvements have been made: tiered memberships based on age and reduced green fees for the under-25s are gathering speed.

www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Clubs are also starting to ask: is there good Wi-Fi throughout? Does the kitchen consider what the young members want to eat? Can we cater better for the immediacy of modern life? Not everyone wants to book a tee time weeks’ in advance. They want to look out the window, see good weather, text a pal and go and play immediately. The Golf Foundation promotes junior golf and the charity can help clubs connect with schools. England Golf has also played a key

role in the initiative and its county development officer’s work with clubs to provide ideas on junior participation and membership. This is another solid sign that the game is looking to future-proof itself. In fact far from hearing its death knell I’d say that the sport seems to have all of its bases covered. So there you have it, if anything, golf is about to find its sweet spot between past, present and future and it’ll be swinging for many more years to come.

123

Enville Golf Club

Whether you’re looking for a change or starting from scratch, finding that extra touch of quality when choosing a golf club is essential. Get it right and you’ll be hooked for life, get it wrong and you’ll lose interest. So whether you’re keen to play more golf, find better golf courses, superior practice facilities, or even a great social scene, look no further than Enville Golf Club. Dubbed by some enthusiastic players as South Staffordshire’s ‘best kept secret’, it’s easy to see why the club has garnered a strong reputation as being one of the best in the county. Only half an hour from Bridgnorth and an even shorter drive from Stourbridge, the complex, which was established in 1935, boasts two wonderful eighteen-hole golf courses and extensive practice facilities. Both are a great challenge to play (the Highgate course has a par of 72 and a Standard Scratch of 73 and the Lodge course has a par and Standard Scratch of 71) and provide an idyllic environment, 124

combining rich heathland and testing tree-lined fairways. A lot of emphasis has been placed on the putting surface, with surfaces that are fast and smooth with subtle contours. Most importantly of all, Enville Golf Club has the virtue of offering year-round golf because of the well-drained sandy subsoil. Beyond this however, the club has a support network in place to make sure every golfer gets maximum satisfaction both on and off the course. “We strive to ensure that members, visitors and guests have a fantastic golfing experience with us.” “Our staff in the Pro Shop and bar, our caterers and office staff, will do everything they can to ensure your time with us is memorable,” says Heather Mulley, Club Manager.

patio offers the perfect place to relax and discuss the game of the day. With a wide range of local ales and beers including the locally brewed award-winning Enville Ale, as well as a daily food and dining service led by Chef Kellie Clutton, to be enjoyed in the 100-seater dining room you’ll be spoilt for choice. That is, of course, providing you make the right choice and visit Enville Golf Club for yourself, because sometimes the best plan of action is to start again – whatever your handicap, whatever your age, whatever your personality. Enville Golf Club is a club that caters for the ever-evolving golfer. In short, it is undoubtedly the club for you.

Mini Magic By Rob Taylor

First of all let’s take care of the elephant in the room: the Union Jack taillights. Love them or hate them, you’re going to notice them. Is the idea kitsch and inadvertently flagging up well-worn stereotypes about Germany’s sense of humour (or lack thereof) or instead is it another piece of Cool Britannia? Frankly, who cares? Especially about what French buyers will think. The new Mini is a car first and foremost. It has taillights that glow red because British law dictates it must. Whether they flash our national anthem via Morse code on the stroke of the hour to the accompaniment of Big Ben-like tolling doesn’t interest me and neither should it you. Here’s what you really want to know about the 2018 Swindon stalwart: The mark III Mini Hatch and Hatch Convertible in three and five-door configurations have been given a mid-life upgrade. New technology, cutting-edge connectivity, standard-fit front and rear (!) LED lights across the range and a dual-clutch automatic gearbox are just some of the standout features in the newly launched range. The changes are focused on driver appeal and core new 128

technologies, including MINI Connected Concierge services, wireless smartphone charging, as well as first-in-class options such as new anti-dazzle adaptive Matrix headlights that in effect allow drivers to use always high-beam without bothering other road users. Available also is some astonishing personalisation options. As part of the extensive Mini Yours customisation service, buyers can have individual parts inside and out, showing their favourite designs or even their name. But consider the residuals, youngsters (and, believe me, it will be young people who will enjoy this novelty most): go for this and you’ll only ever be able to sell your car on to a British bloke called ‘Barry’. Very little has changed mechanically and I can see why: because there really is no pressing need. The range seems already capable of selling itself so clearly now with added trinkets, this facelift will only improve upon the Mini appeal and cars will still be flying out of showrooms nationwide. Even an incremental price hike, which now sees the range start at just over £14,500, will do nothing to dull the brand. Again, apart from a new badge, three additional paint options, alloy wheel designs and exterior

upgrades everything is quite evolutionary and not in the least bit revolutionary. Inside the car, a 6.5-inch touchscreen has been fitted as standard along with USB and Bluetooth connectivity and a multifunction steering wheel. This touchscreen comes with MINI Navigation with Apple Car Play and MINI Connected Services with Real Time Traffic Information. A wireless smartphone charger also makes an appearance and there is an extended range of leather trim, new interior backlit surfaces and colour lines. Select the new interior style ‘Piano Black’ cabin and buyers can have an illuminated Union Jack on the passenger-side dashboard, too. For me it’s all getting a bit too personal at Mini these days. The range boasts outstanding class and peerless brand snobbery and the raft of new changes will undoubtedly only serve to reaffirm it as the premium small car to own. But, to paraphrase Basil Fawlty: don’t mention the taillights. I mentioned them once but I think I got away with it.
