Hello Readers 120 years is a long time. It’s fair to say that no-one still living is that old. If they were, they’d have seen the tail end of the Industrial Revolution; perhaps taken tea with Queen Victoria; maybe sailed aboard and survived the Titanic; watched a little man with a funny moustache at the movies (Hitler/ Chaplin) and seen computers, which began life as the size of planets, eventually reduce to something so small you can carry it in your pocket.

spoke about his lowliness when playing rugby in his family. Roger Dakin was, as usual on form and very topical with his jokes on the anniversary of his unwanted Hockey goal keeping world record of letting 17 in against Germany in 1974. The funds raised for Wolverhampton will be used to rebuild the clubhouse which dates back to the 1960’s and long before Mini/Junior rugby existed. The clubhouse is too small now when there are lots of children using the facility on a Sunday morning. Scott Quinnell (Guest speaker)
Wolverhampton Rugby Club held its 4th annual Sportsman’s Lunch on Friday 13th June 2014. The event was again sponsored by Tile Choice and they were joined by Dudley Motor Company this year. The event grows ever more popular and sold out about three months in advance. Companies such as George Green, FBC Manby Bowdler, Liverpool Victoria Insurance and Barclays Corporate Bank attended with the aim of raising money for the Wolverhampton clubhouse redevelopment, Bag4Sport, Spinal Research and two midlands charities supporting blind children. For a change, the event was blessed with a hot and sunny day which made for a marvellous atmosphere in the marquee. A total of 495 people were first moved by 04

The Local Property Market by Nick Berriman In recent months I have gone on at length about the way that politicians and bank officials seem to be in denial that the whole country is not experiencing the same price rises as London and the South East and I also have talked about the way (unjustified in my eyes) that estate agents have such a bad name. This month I intend to address the problems people beyond the first flush of youth (I would not dare to call them old or elderly!) experience as they find it necessary to down size for whatever reason. There is a very old and very true mantra that if you do have to downsize you should do it while you can and not leave it until you have to. Leave it too long and it becomes much more stressful and physically more difficult. Sometimes stairs become more difficult and single storey living seems preferable. Perhaps the garden starts to be a problem and for those who have always kept an immaculate garden seeing it become gradually less immaculate is hard to live with. Maybe the existing property is just too big to look after or the reason could be financial. Downsizing and taking some of the equity out of the property can mean more funds available for holidays or leisure activities. Perhaps the pension needs supplementing or the family need some help. 08
There can be a multiplicity of reasons and I thought it might be helpful to explore some of the alternatives available. There are several warden assisted apartments in the area. Penn Road, Corfton Drive and Hayward Drive spring to mind and there is a possibility of a development in the heart of Tettenhall by the brand leader of retirement properties in the foreseeable future. There is then the development of cottage style properties in High Grove, Wood Road, Tettenhall which are on two storeys and have lovely grounds. There is also a small number of apartments there. All the above are designed specifically for older people and are equipped accordingly. There are many blocks of apartments in most parts of the area. Many on Tettenhall Road, in Tettenhall Village, Tettenhall Wood, at the Wergs, at Compton, near Chapel Ash and in Finchfield to name but a few. If flat dwelling is not the answer then there are many bungalows around. Most of the bungalows were built in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but not too many since as they tend to take up more plot space than houses on two floors and are therefore less popular with developers. There are one, two and three bedroom bungalows in all areas. Perks and Sidebotham were well known builders and built a design of three bedroom bungalows in Tettenhall, Tettenhall Wood and Wightwick. McLeans built in Compton, Finchfield and also in Codsall and Albrighton.
In addition there are many individual bungalows in all areas. So whatever your choice there are many options to suit all needs both for couples or for single occupation. Do you want to be on one floor or two? How many bedrooms do you need? Do you need a lift if on two floors? Do you want your own garden or communal grounds? Do you need warden assistance? Do you need a garage? Do you need to be able to walk to the shops? These are all questions you need to answer in order to refine your search and I end this section where I began in saying do it when you can and do not wait until you have to. Finally a few words about the current state of the local market. It continues to be active with May sales being up to target and June promising well but still none of the price explosion we keep reading about. Prices only go up when there is competition and that comes when demand exceeds supply. A look in any agents window shows that there is a ready choice of available properties and there is not the shortage required to force prices up. The good news continues to be that there is more interest being shown and there are more sales. This is being written as England have just lost to Uruguay in the World Cop so hopefully the resultant national sense of mourning and depression will not affect the property market ! wolverhampton west magazine

In Season… Amidst the hustle and bustle of the Ideal Home Show, Gregg Wallace is making sure he’s keeping the punters entertained in his ‘Gregg Wallace Restaurant’. We quizzed the MasterChef host about his love of food, and what he gets up to when he’s not facing a dinner plate. Gregg Wallace is best known for co-hosting MasterChef and Celebrity MasterChef series on the BBC, alongside fellow foodie John Torode. The pair have worked up an appetite for pushing chefs to their absolute extremes over the years, and their high-pressure challenges have produced equally spectacular and disastrous results. Of course, Wallace’s no-nonsense, gregarious approach to judging in the kitchen has made him a bit of a fans’ favourite. There must have been plenty of great moments from the series. What have been the best memories? “I think aside from some fantastic dishes, what really stands out with MasterChef is the travelling we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy. We’ve been to some amazing places. Amongst my favourites I think are Thailand and India, where there is such a strong food culture and yet so different to our own.”
chips have gone and the noodles have taken over. I reckon that will continue and I think we will take on more and more influences, especially I think the healthier cuisines.” Starting his life as a greengrocer, Wallace knows the ins and outs of healthy, fresh and seasonal produce. As we enter spring, what are his tips for finding the best vegetables? “We are now at one of the most exciting times of the year for fresh produce, which you can pick up at the old-fashioned greengrocers. The first of the broad beans, the start of the runner beans and spring peas are all coming through. There’s the first of the Cornish new potatoes too, and the Jersey new potatoes are just around the corner. And, of course, the ultimate in luxury vegetables: asparagus!” Aside from his love of vegetables, Wallace has another very well known food romance, perhaps even more deeply rooted. “I do love puddings. Not desserts… desserts is a French word. In this country we have puddings, Sir.” With a huge grin across his face, he tells us, “I love them because they’re so unnecessary; they are purely an indulgence.
They’re a present to ourselves and that why I love them. And when Britain was in the culinary wilderness of cuisine with the rest of Europe laughing at us, we were still world leaders in the big, thick, sticky sweet puddings. We do it very well.” Outside of talking about, and sampling, plenty of amazing food, how does he escape the culinary world? “MasterChef takes up a lot of my life, but when I’m not doing that my favourite pastime, funnily enough, is fitness and gym work. I’m in the gym six days a week, sometimes twice a day. People don’t realise that I’m also a qualified rugby coach and I absolutely love my rugby. Another thing people don’t realise about me is I’m a very keen amateur historian, so my house is stacked full of reference books. All those things, and I love my children – I’m a single parent and I love spending time with them. It keeps me busy, and busy is good!”
That said, the emergence of an incredibly rich, vibrant and varied culinary offering in Britain is something, undoubtedly, to be proud of. Does Gregg feel the diversity of food will continue to expand or have we reached a peak? “We are very fortunate in this country to have such a broad range of food available to us. In London, especially, it’s an incredible offering. I can only think of one comparable city, really, and that’s New York. We have such cultural diversity and that is expressed brilliantly in a huge number of eateries. What does surprise me, and it’s happened in the past five years or so, is that Asian food has become our takeaway or cheap lunch of choice. I think that fish and

Starting and finishing in West Park in Wolverhampton there are events to suit all ages and all abilities. Entries are coming in via the website, post and Runners World. We would like people to also get sponsorship for the charities. In any case all of the entry fees go to the charities.
The 20K cycle ride is aimed at families and enthusiasts alike. This year we are delighted to announce the addition of a new Sponsor Cousins Furniture. The cycle ride has now been named as the Cousins’ 20K cycle ride. These activities are a great way to get out and enjoy

Local Girls Run the Manchester Marathon for Compton Hospice
Celebrating 20 Years as CAMEO Ladies From left, Vice Chairman Pamela Lane and Chairman Jane Emery cut the cake.
Michelle & Sharon Caldwell presenting cheque to Sue Chance from Compton Hospice
Chairman Jane Emery welcomed members in June to the Patsull Park Hotel, to enjoy a two course lunch followed by entertainment with Lisa Jayne (Old Time Music Hall) to celebrate 20 years as CAMEO Ladies.
18
The theme of coffee and cream was used in a beautiful cake decorated with the logo of CAMEO. Each member enjoyed a slice at the end of the meal served with coffee.
Two girls from Telford completed their first ever marathon in April. Sharon and Michelle Caldwell trained for months to get fit enough to complete the gruelling circuit and apart from their blistered feet came through it relatively unscathed!
Members were delighted to take home a potted cream rose as a memento of the occasion.
Sharon said “despite all the training it was a lot tougher than we thought. What kept us going was the fact that we were running
for such a worthy cause. We are so proud of our achievement, not just to complete the marathon but we’re really chuffed that we managed to raise £850 for Compton Hospice. Michelle added “We would like to personally thank all of the businesses and individuals who generously sponsored us, without them we wouldn’t be as proud as we both are”.

How about a staycation
this s u mmer ? areas, just like you would on a traditional holiday. This makes all the difference between a staycation and just a week hanging around the house. Set your budget and splurge where you can guilt free!
Lose yourself No need to wait till your summer hols to tackle War & Peace. On your staycation, you have the luxury of time to sit back, relax, and immerse yourself in a fab book. Whether that’s a good old trashy novel, educational text or a self-help title, your staycation is your chance to lose yourself in a good book.
Make a home spa night
The ‘staycation’ is back in favour!
to cost the earth. So, work out how much you’ve got to spend for your staycation and set a daily budget.
The rising cost of living, increased holiday costs and the crackdown on children having term-time holidays are all taking their toll on where we decide to holiday. Travelling to a tropical resort isn’t your only holiday option. This summer how about considering a “staycation” instead and unwind within (or just outside) your own four walls.
Create a plan
Let’s put the world on hold! Set the date and time for your staycation Give your staycation a start and end date, otherwise you run the risk of feeling like it’s just another week of endless chores and jobs. The idea of a staycation is to have a holiday at home! So, coordinate your calendars, book time off work and settle on specific days you can officially be on staycation.
Staycation budget Chances are, one big reason for planning a staycation rather than a holiday abroad is that cash is short. Good news: You can take a staycation for next to nothing. An evening at your local pub, inexpensive red wine and pizza at home or a picnic to your local National Trust Estate doesn’t have 20

Here’s a taster: ‘You can’t copy Shrewsbury with its higgledypiggledy streets with names you want to say out loud, like Bear Steps, Wyle Cop and Grope Lane. A river that scoops up the town in a loop. Burger and fries in a medieval cellar. Two bridges, each with a different nationality. Wonky buildings left, right and centre. A cappuccino and a bike to go.
Monkey Business By Rob Taylor “Daddy, who is that old man high up on that stone?” asks the inquisitive little scamp, clutching his favourite soft toy monkey. “He’s sitting in his chair reading like granddad does. Is he tired?” adds the youngster in earnest. “Probably, yeah”, comes the reply from his father, with all the paternal interest of a male lion after mating. It’s a sad indictment on modern parents in general, but more specifically it’s shocking because today I’m in Shrewsbury and the ‘old man’ in question is Charles Darwin; someone I’d venture to say is well worth talking about; especially since in his child’s choice of toy there is available to him a segue so apt it screams out to even the most unintelligent parent.
But discounting quantum leaps forward in mankind’s understanding of itself, little has changed in the quaint little medieval market town that Darwin called home. Apart from the Charles Darwin Shopping Arcade. And Quantum Leap, a 12 metre-high sculpture unveiled in 2009 to commemorate Darwin’s bicentenary in Mardol Quay Gardens. And, well, you get the gist. Always a popular tourist hotspot, Shrewsbury welcomes thousands of visitors each year and that’s not surprising, given the creative copy you find on the town’s official tourist website.
‘Bread, still warm, made with flour from a water mill a few miles away. Mick Jagger and Margaret Thatcher watching from a 1500s building. A new £10 Museum & Art Gallery in a Victorian Market Hall. A blockbuster in a Tudor cinema. The world’s tallest town crier. 921 years of wine buffs. Three million blooms in a quarry.’ Why include the above, you may wonder. Well, because, there’s a feeling well known to every writer and it’s that someone else before them - alive or usually dead - has said it better; more succinctly, more incisively or more emphatically. After all, didn’t Darwin publish his theory jointly with Alfred Russel Wallace? Some even say it was Wallace who was more integral to the theory than the great man himself. Heretics even assert that Darwin modified his assertions to fall into line with him. So maybe it was ultimately wisdom, and not ignorance, which saw the aforementioned father steer clear of the whole subject.
Oh well. It’s a good job that Darwin’s dad, Erasmus - a prominent scientist himself - bothered to teach old Charlie a thing or two or else our understanding of where we all came from would be about as developed as this little boy’s is. Undoubtedly Shrewsbury’s most famous son - he was born in The Mount in the Frankwell area of the town in 1809 - Darwin’s likeness sits outside the building - now Shrewsbury Town Hall - which was to him Shrewsbury School, the seat of his education. But, of course, nothing he learned there, under the tutelage of Samuel Butler, or from his father can take the credit for his startling theory of evolution.

20 - 30 minutes
METHOD FIRST JOB: Place the potatoes on a tray and bake in the oven for around 30 - 40 minutes ready to add to the salad a bit later on. MEAT: Ask your butcher for a boned, well-trimmed of fat and sinew and butterflied leg of lamb. Once you get it home get a small sharp knife and start making small cuts in the flesh all over the leg. Peel the garlic bulbs and set one bulb of cloves aside for later. Thinly slice the cloves of garlic and insert them into the slits you have cut into the meat. Now rub the spice mix well into the meat and drizzle with oil rubbing all over the meat. Place into a plastic tray and wrap tightly with cling film. Put into fridge for up to 2 days. This needs to be at room temperature before you cook it so if its for lunch take it out the fridge in the morning(8am). Once on the BBQ allow to cook for about 17 minutes each side, take off the grill and leave to rest for about 20 minutes, allowing you to finish preparing the rest of the food. SALAD: Trim the broccoli and blanch for 2 minutes. Grill the broccoli before you cook the meat on the bbq. Pour 100ml of oil into a frying pan and add thinly sliced garlic and chillies then fry on 26

a low heat for about 12 minutes until soft but not too coloured. Once the broccoli is charred place into a bowl and pour over the garlic and chilli oil. Cut the potatoes in half and mix through the broccoli then season with sea salt and black pepper. DIP: Empty the yoghurt into a bowl, pour in 2 tbsp of mint sauce and grated cucumber, season with salt and pepper to serve. SERVING SUGGESTION: Once your meat has rested fully, carve it and present on a platter in front of your guests with the broccoli salad, watercress salad, hummus and tzatziki dip in bowls. Now grill the flat breads for 30 seconds and serve. To eat spread the hummus over the bread, add a little watercress salad then the meat and now a little tzatziki on the top and fold the flat breads and serve with the broccoli salad on the side. www.facebook.com/takefood www.instagram.com/mikewhitehurst_takefood www.twitter.com/takefood mike@takefood.co.uk www.takefood.co.uk

Three Pines Building Contractors: Built on Solid Foundations Top Wolverhamptonbased building contractor Three Pines has been in business since 1960. Since then the firm has laid down solid foundations in both the commercial and domestic sector, working with prominent clients like BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Caterpillar and Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. But that doesn’t mean they are too big to come and work for you. It’s a classic case of ‘no job being too big or small’ as owner and Managing Director Alan Bradshaw, explains: “Whether you require refurbishment, extensions or a new build, Three Pines has the skills and expertise to handle your project from planning through to completion. “We’ll undertake the smallest of maintenance work right up to the large contracts required for big business.” And the company has been busy making some changes
at its headquarters in Cullwick Street, Wolverhampton too: “We’ve recently added an extension to our offices, to make room for a brand new estimating department and board room, as well as a purpose-built space for our potential and existing clients.” The changes have coincided with the company’s Contracts Manager, Neil Lerigo, joining Alan and Louise Bradshaw and Graham Haughton as company directors. “Neil has worked for Three Pines for nearly 5 years and we’re delighted that he is now on-board as a director.” If you’re keen to start making some changes at your home or business, then it’s time to contact the Three Pines team: “We’ll give assistance throughout the whole process, we can help you to find a qualified architect to draw up building plans and offer guidance when applying for planning permission.”
“We are completely considerate of the care and understanding needed when working on projects in both domestic and commercial sectors.” You can also be reassured that the tradesmen working for you will be well-known to the company, as many have been working for the long-established family-run business for their entire career. Plus, there will be no hidden costs: “We’ll give you an accurate quote and that is the price you pay. If you have a change of mind during the build we will advise you of any price increases before changes are implemented. ” Over the years Three Pines has grown considerably in both the size and scope of its workforce and operation. The attainment of CHAS accreditation was a major boost for the company and is added to the membership of Constructionline, Federation of Master Builders and National Federation of Builders. Exciting plans are underway though, as the company has teamed-up with Hovi Developments, to undertake a new joint venture into residential development, details of that will soon be revealed: “We hope that the partnership will lead to many exciting new build ventures,” adds Alan.

Kitchens in Wolverhampton will never be the same again
UK’S LARGEST KITCHEN FACELIFT RETAILER
OPENS ON THE TETTENHALL ROAD Wolverhampton local, Richard Foster, has recently opened his Dream Doors showroom on The Tettenhall Road in Newbridge. And he already has an order book full of customers, all impressed by the franchised company’s time and moneysaving kitchen makeover service. A customer who had her kitchen doors and drawers swapped in a single day gave a glowing testimonial on the independent consumer monitoring website, Checkatrade, commenting: “We’re over the moon with the service and work done. We can’t speak highly enough of them. We’ve never been so pleased with the quality, standard and service provided from any trader before.” Another customer in Wolverhampton who chose the same simple door replacement service gave Dream Doors top marks, writing: “The fitting was very good. Great customer service as well. I have already recommended them.”
30
Dream Doors was established in Hampshire in 1999 and now has more than 50 locallyowned franchised showrooms throughout the country. Richard’s showroom – which has taken just six months to open – is the first to cover the WV postcode area. An experienced retailer in his own right before joining Dream Doors, Richard says that, as a franchise, the company offers something other kitchen operators can’t. “I’ve visited plenty of businesses in my time, and this is definitely the most professional and wellrun franchise I’ve ever seen,” he says. “It offers the best of both worlds for customers; they’re buying from a national brand that’s won numerous awards and built a fantastic reputation, but they’re also dealing with a local
BEFORE
business owner who has their own reputation and livelihood at stake.” Made-to-measure and manufactured in the UK, all Dream Doors kitchen doors and drawers are fitted in a single day. It’s a convenient solution that leaves kitchens looking like new, but without the stress and upheaval of a full refurbishment. Most customers also choose new worktops and a sink, and while that might take an extra day, it is still at least half the cost of a comparable new kitchen. Dream Doors also supplies appliances from the best manufacturers and some of the most innovative storage solutions on the market, all making the best use of space in the kitchen. Richard offers a free guarantee on the doors and installation and asks for just a 50 percent deposit, only collecting the balance when customers are completely satisfied. Dragon Boats at Himley Park
A beautiful day dawned on 18th May 2014 with wall to wall sunshine and a light breeze for the 14th Annual Running of the Dragon Boat Challenge organised by the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton on the great pool at Himley Park. From early morning, Rotarian helpers together with the first competitors began to arrive. Barbeques were set up and lit and soon the smell of bacon and sausages cooking was drifting across the sundrenched park. The Great Pool was mirror-like except where a pair of swans with there cygnets were creating a few ripples when the fair and side stalls began to arrive. By 10.00am the competitors paddock area was bustling. All of the 21 entrants had arrived and registered their Dragon Boat crew members. The Dragon Boat company team were set up and ready to start the heats on schedule at 10.15am.
together with members of the public who came along to watch the fun and take advantage of the free parking concession for the day kindly granted by the Himley Park management, began to arrive in droves and the smell of the bacon cooking on the barbeques increased in its intensity. The car park crew of Rotarians by this time were under extreme pressure to deal with and direct the arriving cars which numbered in excess of 1500 by the end of the day. The crews each competed in three heats with the 12 most rapid going forward to compete in the six boat semi-finals’ before the six boat final. The crew named Jonars Ark from UTC Aerospace emerged from the final as winners of this years Dragon Boat challenge in a time of 1 min 16.64 seconds.
Second were MOOG Vulcan, another aerospace crew and third the convenience store crew from Rippleglen. The trophy for boat crewed by a team from a school was taken by Wednesfield High who were just outside the top three in fourth place. In addition to the racing, the 5000 plus spectators who turned out to enjoy the fun were able to enjoy the fair and stalls in the glorious sunshine of the afternoon, and participate in the raffle for a signed Albion or Wolves shirt. Luckily the Albion shirt was won by an Albion supporter from Wordsley, and the Wolves shirt by Rotary Club member Dr Richard Walton. At the end of the day, many crews expressed that they had had a truly wonderful time, and would return next year to compete in the challenge which is to be held on 17th May 2015.
Soon after the heats started, family and friends of crew members

It is hard to believe that over a year has gone by since Interiors@ No72 opened in Tettenhall Wood.
Although Cora Turner-Collis, the owner, has been in business for 20 years she explains “it has been like starting a new business as I have been able to source so many more suppliers, ranges and products than when I was working from an industrial unit”.
Cora also offers an interior design service to plan ‘the whole look’ which is tailored to each individual’s tastes and needs. Katie has recently joined the team. She has a degree in textiles so is also able to advise and help clients make the right choices.
The makeover of the old Bird in Hand pub has transformed the premises from a tired 50’s built pub to a destination showroom for interiors as well as the coffee shop and hairdressers. Cora has been told by several customers in the shop that they think she has raised the house prices in Tettenhall Wood!
The Virgo team love a challenge and will spend time to source unusual items for clients or create bespoke products. They can provide for both commercial and domestic environments in both traditional and contemporary styles. All work is designed, made and fitted giving a fully inclusive service.

Virus Warning
PC Support & Service
A malicious virus known as Gameover Zeus has been infecting computers worldwide. This one captures information from users logging into secure websites such as online banking, enabling the people behind it to steal money. If it can’t find such information it encrypts all files such as documents and photos, then locks the computer and asks for a sum of money to unlock the data.
While this virus is not too difficult to remove, once the data has been encrypted it is impossible to decrypt, making documents and photos useless. Police forces from different countries have combined to thwart the virus in the short term but fear it will return soon. To prevent getting caught out make sure your anti-virus is up to date with the latest definitions, your operating system has all the latest critical updates and of course make sure any important files are kept elsewhere as a backup.

Traditional lighting has been the incandescent light bulbs that have been around for over 100 years that have changed very little, lasting up to 1000 hours, and are being gradually phased out as part of a worldwide attempt to conserve energy.

The halogen lamp works on the same principle as incandescent bulbs, but with the halogen gas it increases the intensity of white light as opposed to a yellow glow associated with the incandescent bulb and also increases the life of the lamp which last typically 2000 hours. There are at present lower energy alternatives available, namely CFL’s, Compact Fluorescent Lights that use less electricity and will last 6 - 10,000 hours. LED light bulbs are different to traditional incandescent bulbs in the way they produce light. The incandescent light bulbs pass electricity through a filament, whilst LEDs produces its light through a semiconductor that emits light energy when an electrical current is passed through it. This way of producing light is also different from regular energy saving bulbs which pass energy through mercury vapour to create UV light, which is then absorbed by a phosphor coating inside the lamp causing it to glow. Why you need to switch to led light bulbs: • Savings of around 80% on electricity charges compared to incandescent bulbs.
• Full brightness instantly with no warm up time and no flicker when dimmed.
• Savings of 75% compared to halogen lamps.
• LEDs contain no mercury or any other harmful substances.
• Reduces maintenance costs and bulb replacement as LED lamps last up to 50 times longer than incandescent lighting and 3 to 5 times longer than fluorescent lighting. • LED bulbs are energy efficient with an incandescent light bulb losing 80% of its energy to heat, leaving only 20% for light and operate at 10-20 percent of the power needed for incandescent bulbs of an equal brightness. • LEDs produce very little heat and run cool, which reduces fire hazard. • Remain silent with no annoying and distracting noises. 42
• LED light bulbs produce no ultraviolet (UV) or infrared (IR) radiation. • LED are tougher than CFLs, more durable and much harder to break. • Environmentally friendly. • Up to 5 years warranty. LED has transformed the traditional lighting market with the development by the electronic/ semiconductor industry with proven cost savings, reduced carbon emissions and short pay back periods and with the added benefit of enhancing your green credentials. wolverhampton west magazine

Summer Gardening Hanging Baskets need watering daily and liquid feeding weekly even with the slow release fertilizers added to composts; you’ll see the extra benefits from a bit of liquid feed. If you’re going on holiday, it’s advisable to get someone to water your tubs and baskets while you’re away. Indoor plants can be stood on capillary matting – the other end is put into a container full of water and the plants will take up the water as they need it. Make sure to wet the matting first. Stake and tie in taller herbaceous plants before they get too tall and floppy to manage. Dead heading as flowers finish will often encourage a plant to produce another

flourish of flowers after the main flowers have finished. Make the most of a warm sunny day and pull or hoe up any weeds still lurking in your borders. Woolly Aphid is a pest of fruit trees that is getting very common. It appears as fluffy white cotton wool like patches on stems. Use Provado Ultimate Bug Killer as a control, but follow the directions as there is a minimum harvest interval. After the damp weather of May there are a lot of slugs about. Use pellets, the new wool based ‘Slug Gone’ or liquid Slug killer. Since the chemical control for leatherjackets has been withdrawn from sale, control of this rapidly spreading pest is difficult. Often the presence of starlings and thrushes on the lawn can indicate grubs in the ground. The
only product that can give some control is a biological nematode, which is purchased online. It must be applied as soon as you receive it as it’s a living organism. Use a very fine netting (Mosquitoplast) to cover cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and other particularly susceptible vegetables against flies, pigeons and butterflies. Harvest peas and runner beans regularly whilst they are young and tender, freeze any spares for home grown vegetables during the winter months. If you want Hyacinths in flower for Christmas, plant them in September. Use a compost specifically for bulbs as it will contain charcoal to keep the soil sweet.

How Good Design can keep you Gardening Through Retirement by Andi Way from Boningale Garden Creations First, I would think about what changes can be made to your garden to make it easier to look after in the long-term – this is likely to be much more affordable than you think (especially when you take into consideration the costs of hiring a gardener every week or fortnight). Any good garden designer will discuss in depth with you about your likes/ dislikes, will consider your lifestyle and if you have any mobility issues or conditions that are likely to make some tasks in the garden more difficult. We talk to lots of people in this situation, and we’ve created all sorts of different designs which suit their own lifestyles – there are many design techniques we can use. Raised beds can be a good idea because you not only get all the colour and scent of the borders, but you will also be able to maintain them without bending down. We can look at the type of planting you have and
put together a new scheme that doesn’t require so much regular attention. Could you replace the steps? How about installing wider paths? These are great ideas for anyone who wants easy access outside. And look at the lawn. A lawn is a lovely thing to have in a garden but it does require a lot of mowing in the summer months. Talk to a designer about how low maintenance surfaces, including paving or gravel, could add an elegant touch to your outdoor space without losing any of the charm that a lawn can bring. Gardening is such a good way to keep fit and active that if you introduce design changes to your favourite outdoor space, you will be able to spend many more years planting and enjoying it. If you need further inspiration come and see us at the Shrewsbury Flower Show on the 8th-9th August. Also look out for the date of Boningale Nurseries Annual Plant Sale in September at www.boningale.co.uk
If you love your garden, you’ve probably spent many years nurturing the borders, getting it to look just-so all year round. All that mowing, digging, trimming – it’s a labour of love. But as the years roll by – those gardens we have lavished so much care and attention on can get quite difficult to maintain. While your first thought might be to hire a gardener to do the heavy jobs, there is another way – a way that can help you continue to enjoy gardening.

Italian Lakes Lake Garda is the biggest and most spectacular of the Italian Lakes, with plenty of resorts from which to choose. Each resort has its own individual character and atmosphere, set in stunning scenery, and access to the other fantastic lakeside villages by frequent boat and hydrofoil services. So how do you decide where to go? Here’s a few pointers in a nutshell
Bardolino An attractive, lively town on the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda with a pretty harbour. The traffic free centre offer good bars and cafés, excellent restaurants, smart shops and often live music.
Garda On the Eastern shore of Lake Garda where the lake broadens and the scenery becomes gentle with a backdrop of hills covered by olive groves, cypress trees and the famous Valpolicella vineyards.
Malcesine On the north-eastern shores, this lovely town tumbles picturesquely down cobbled streets to the crystal water’s edge, overlooked on a sheer rock face by the magnificent 13th century castle. The cable car to the top of Monte Baldo offers stunning views and opens up a walker’s paradise.
52
Sirmione The glorious peninsula of Sirmione stretches out from the southern shore of Lake Garda. This beautiful old town comes complete with the 13th century Scaligeri castle and its fascinating inland dock, and a panoramic walk along the shore takes you past bathing beaches to the tip of the peninsula where there’s an ancient Roman Palace and the Grottos of Catullo. Italian cuisine might mean certain other things to lesser mortals, but forget the pasta, the pizza, the cheeses, the wine, the aperitifs and the rest… to the discerning palate it means just one thing - ice cream!!! You will find a “gelateria” (crudely, an ice cream shop) in every resort selling dollops and dollops of “gelato” (low butterfat ice cream). In Sirmione in Via Vittoiro Emanuele, there are ice cream stalls on either side with literally hundreds of different flavours on display. As well as the perennial favourites, these include Amarena (cherry flavoured with really juicy cherries), spicy chocolate and chilli, the kiddie-friendly “Puffo” (which means Smurf in Italian and is bubblegum flavoured and coloured bright blue) and even Gorgonzola! The gelateria Scaligeri in Sirmione have been serving up delicious ice cream since 1948!
Riva
Bardolino Wine Festival 2nd - 6th October 2014
Dramatically situated on the mountainous northern tip of the lake, Riva boasts superb scenery, elegant parks and a long lakeside promenade. Riva has many fine buildings, especially around the colourful Piazza, and the fantastic 12th Century La Rocca castle, which dominates the waterfront.
Every year the famous wine-making town of Bardolino celebrates the new harvest of the grapes that contribute to the delicious red wine which can be drunk alongside the famous food stalls that provide typical snacks of the region such as Risotto, different varieties of pasta and sauces,

September is festival season throughout the alpine regions of Austria, as villages celebrate the annual “Almabtrieb”. This wonderful traditional festival literally means “driving down the mountain” and celebrates the end of the summer when the cows are led down the mountain to the valley and their stables for the winter. The sound of cowbells echo through the valley as hundreds of cows pass through the villages, highly decorated in traditional costume. Alongside the “Cow Train” procession are village fetes and celebrations throughout the mountains - quite a spectacle to see and take part in. The Almabtrieb event happens at the end of September, usually between 16th - 30th September. In each village, there is live music and dancing, handicraft stalls and plenty of schnapps and local food to go round. The day starts around 10am with the parade lasting until lunchtime. After lunch the party starts and festivities continue into the evening. It is a wonderful day out for all ages too, usually with plenty of games and activities for the kids. The size of the celebration and the date varies between villages.

Current pupils also praise the music school. John, a guitar student is amongst many of the school’s fans. “M2K Music School is a fantastic teaching centre” he begins, “It is refreshing to find staff who are enthusiastic, committed and clearly love what they do. Comics not always a Laughing Matter A collection of over 2,000 comics and examples of pulp literature sold for a massive £49,860.47* when it went under the hammer at Cuttlestones last month. With the majority of examples dating from the golden - silver age of comic books (1930s – 1960s) and with heavyweight names including DC, Marvel well represented alongside more obscure and now defunct names such as Charlton, ACG and Tower comics, the lots bought comic collectors out in force. With lots selling worldwide via telephone, live internet and commission bids as well as to a strong representation of collectors in the room Cuttlestones once again lived up to its reputation as ‘the local auction house with the global reach’. Within comics, superheroes ruled the day with highlights including Lot 127 - a collection of Silver Age Marvel Comics ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ comic books which sold for £847 to an internet bidder; Lot 129 - a 1962
58
Marvel Comics ‘X-Men’ #1 Comic Book which fetched £907.50, selling to a bidder in the room; and Lot 132 – a collection of Marvel Comics’ Silver Age ‘The Avengers’ comic books, which triggered an online bidding war to achieve £1,210. The Pulp Magazines and Cult Literature section also provided two particularly impressive ‘star lots’. Lot 352, a collection of 1930s-1940s ‘Horror Stories’ Pulp Magazines published by ‘A Quality Publication’, achieved £3,509, whilst Lot 335 – a collection by the same publisher, also dating from the 1930s-40s and entitled ‘The Spider’ sold for £1,936. Auction room manager, Tom Waldron says: “We’re delighted with the result. They caused a real media spin before the sale which helped alert collectors the world over to the
fact that we had some very rare and special comics and pulp literature editions amongst this collection.” And it wasn’t just the classic superhero comics that performed well in this sale - achieving a combined £22,140.58. The cult literature and pulp magazines section amassed an impressive £24,923.58 while the graphic novels contingent fetched a total of £2,796.31.

Eating Out - Al Fresco Eating out is one of the supreme pleasures of life today. Normally of course it means heading for some well recommended pub or restaurant where the food is great, the wine beyond fine and the ambience well-appointed and comfortable in the extreme. However summer is surely here and eating out takes on a whole new meaning. Hotels and restaurants these days are more than happy to provide comfortable seating arrangements outdoors. The best will have courtyards where the breeze whispers amongst pots of flowers spreading their heavenly scents wafting around the tables. Many of course will not have private courts beautifully appointed for
Tapas available from the Kingfisher
elegant dining. Many will follow the continental fashion of placing the tables outside the premises on the pavements where in true cosmopolitan style; one may feast on some of the best foods available in the district.
Truly we have become a nation of al fresco diners. But is the food any different in these outdoor ‘dining rooms‘? Well it depends. Gastro pubs will serve a whole range of meals from both traditional and special summer-time menus – Mediterranean style tapas, salads and grills, pies and pastas, barbecued meats and delicious dishes from all over the world. In other establishments, traditional dishes are still much in evidence. Don’t overlook the drinks though. What better on a hot summer’s day than an icy glass of white wine, sparkling or still? Or, if you prefer, a glass or two of the coldest lagers and beers will wash down those delicious meals in no uncertain way. One of the best things about eating outdoors is the way your food comes untouched by the
scents and odours of the other meals on the menu. You taste the full and delicate best of each meat, each vegetable, and each sauce. Nothing but the fresh, open air is there to adulterate it. Of course some establishments specialise in barbecue cooking. Then of course you get the fulsome flavour of the smoky cooking which naturally adds to the assault on your taste buds. Few surely, can resist the smell of fresh cooked burgers, sizzling sausages and charcoal grilled meats and fish? If you feel like eating out this summer, you can be sure the choice is large and varied. But do make sure that eating out means just that. Take advantage of the weather, the hospitality and the advantages of enjoying a perfect meal in the best of all surroundings, the great British outdoors!
Tapas available from the Kingfisher
Pubs too these days are run in a much easier fashion than was once the case and whole families are more than welcome to sample the hospitality of the house indoors. But pub gardens and cleared car parks are also pressed into use for the pleasure of their patrons. Long gone are the hard, uncompromising wooden benches that were once the only form of outdoor seating provided. Mine host now welcomes guests to elegant tables, comfortable chairs and pretty umbrellas and shades to protect diners from the heat of the sun. 62

The Shrewsbury Arms, Albrighton By Rachel Sabin Having worked in Albrighton during my student years, I knew a little of the history of ‘The Shrew’ and was intrigued to see what it had become. I therefore jumped at the opportunity to review this tastefully refurbished pub and restaurant. Upon arrival at The Shrewsbury Arms, my partner Will and I were pleased to note that there were extensive parking facilities. We were also immediately in awe of the beauty of the Tudor building which gleamed in the sunlight on the sunny June evening. As the weather was glorious that day, the beer garden was also being put to good use! On entry to the building we were guided to the extensively stocked bar. As I drew the short straw and was driving that night, I stuck to the orange juice, but Will was pleased that Doom Bar beer was on draught. Described by Will as a ‘nice drop’, it helped to create the feel of a traditional English pub.
64
When we were shown to the restaurant area, we were both blown away by what we saw. From elegant chandeliers to detailed artwork, the room would not have felt out of place in a stately home. Looking out of the window we had unbeatable views of Albrighton High Street and the magnificent St. Mary’s Church. Taking a seat we were offered a choice of two menus, the a la carte menu, and as it was a Thursday, the Pie Night menu. This is soon to become Thursday Tapas Night, a sharing meal at two for £8. Other nights on offer at The Shrewsbury Arms include Friday Fish and Fizz (an additional fish menu plus discount off Prosecco and Champagne) and All Day Sunday Roasts. There is also a midweek lunch club with great offers available. After a tough choice, we both decided to go with the a la carte menu, to truly experience what the restaurant had to offer. It took us a while to ponder the menu with starter options ranging from Deep Fried Brie (£4.75) to Pan Fried King Scallops (£7.50). Will eventually
chose Soup of the Day (£4.75) which on that day was cauliflower, whilst I opted for Duck Spring Rolls with Hoi Sin Dip (£5.25). Both starters were received very well and I can definitely say that the spring rolls were better than any I have ever had from a Chinese restaurant For the main course, there were options of light bites, sharing platters or full main courses. Having trained hard to develop our eating skills on a cruise the previous weekend, we both chose to go for a full main course. But which one to choose? With choices ranging from the traditional locally produced Walter Smith Sausages and Mash (£9.95) to the more flamboyant Half Lobster Thermidor (£19.75) there is certainly a meal to suit every appetite. After a long deliberation, I settled upon the New York Style Chicken (£12.00), whilst Will decided to have the Aged Angus Beef Burger (£10.50). The first thing we noticed when the food arrived was how beautifully it was presented. Each item of food had its own place on the plate, or board, in the case of Will’s burger. The New York
wolverhampton west magazine
Chicken surpassed any I had had before as instead of simply being chicken with barbecue sauce, as you often find, the tender chicken breasts, wrapped in bacon, were stuffed with cheese which added an extra element to the meal. The chunky Cajun wedges were the perfect accompaniment to the meal and full of flavour. After all that food we were too stuffed to be able to move. However upon seeing the dessert menu, we decided to power through and make it to the finish line. Our first decision was whether to have individual
desserts (£5.25 each) or to have an Assiette of Desserts to share (£10.50). As one of us would end up having the ‘bigger half’ we decided that individual ones were surely the safest option, with Will choosing the Chocolate Brownie, whilst I chose the Summer Berry Panacotta, which was light and wonderfully delicious, especially with the white chocolate and strawberry smoothie which accompanied it. Will simply described the brownie as ‘the
best he had ever tasted’ which is high praise indeed as such compliments are usually reserved only for his Mom’s baking! As we waddled home, full with good food, we felt we had had a superb meal in a relaxing yet elegant setting suitable for diners of all ages and tastes. We certainly will be recommending The Shrewsbury Arms to all our friends. The pub now has a new lease of life and a bright future ahead.

Food Fit for a King - The King’s Repose By Helen Taylor
Keen curry fans fond of “popping out for an Indian” will love The Kings Repose, Featherstone. The restaurant has long been a favourite with locals, but over the years has become a hotspot for curry connoisseurs too, who’re willing to travel far and wide to get a taste of the delicious authentic Indian cuisine that’s on offer. It’s my first visit tonight though, and first impressions couldn’t be better. Situated just off New Road, the historic barn that houses the business is surrounded by
68
mature trees and looks idyllic in the summer sunshine. Are they oak trees? I wonder immediately as I step out of the car. You see, I’ve heard all about the interesting history of the building before arriving, and I’m keen to share the story with my good friend Vicky as we wander inside. The building’s roots involve one of the area’s favourite stories: namely King Charles II’s predilection for climbing trees, then hiding from Parliamentarians, while on the run from the Battle of Worcester. In fact it is thought to be in this very barn where Charles is rumoured to have surreptitiously camped out with his bodyguards, before leaving in disguise and under cover of
darkness for Liverpool. Needless to say the restaurant’s name owes in no small part to this story. Inside the theme continues to this effect, with a rustic charm atypical of many Indian restaurants. Exposed beams look down over the bar area, character portraits of Charles II and Oliver Cromwell adorn the walls and there’s an eclectic mix of unique objects and antique swords; with restaurant seating located on the upper level. A uniquely characterful ambience indeed. My friend, Vicky, and I are quickly seated on this busy Wednesday night by restaurant manager, Monser, who is both welcoming and informative.
wolverhampton west magazine
In fact it’s very clear that such attentive service is key to the restaurant’s success. The staff are obviously devoted to attending to every one of their customers’ needs and excel at their duties.
Sitting comfortably, we look over the menu and decided that we can’t resist ordering several poppadoms - served with a delicious selection of pickles and chutneys - and our starters.
My dish is flavoursome, tasty and delicious; it is without doubt the finest vegetable korma I’ve ever had, and I’ve eaten plenty. Vicky’s aromatic plate of barbecued chicken - cooked with green chilli and spices from the Bengal - wafts towards me alluringly from across
the table; she assures me that it is delectable and at the very least a match for my korma. To finish we choose Lemon Sorbet (£3.95) - a natural sorbet contained within its own fruit and Mango-based Kulfi Indian Ice Cream (£2.50), both of which clean the palate effectively and provide a delightfully sweet note on which to end. It’s certainly no exaggeration to say that Vicky and I were treated like royalty at the King’s Repose.
Soaking up the surroundings that have given us plenty to talk about - and catching-up we get hungrily tuck-in to our poppadoms. Having happily eaten every last crumb we see the arrival of the starters, Stuffed Pepper (£4.50) and Murgh Tikka (£3.50). Impressed by the fastidious attention to presentation and generous portion size, we can’t wait to try our selections. The pepper is perfectly cooked and filled with mouth-watering spicy vegetables, which are offset nicely by the accompanying bed of cool, crisp salad. Vicky is delighted that the chicken is “light, full of flavour and tantalising to the taste buds.” A good start - now for the main event: Vegetable Korma (£6.95) and Bengali Murgh Rezalla (£8.95), which both arrive promptly.

action. After the fantastic Family Fun Day, there are three midweek evening fixtures to enjoy before the racecourse’s feature raceday of 2014 on Friday 29 August.
Wolverhampton Racecourse
Invests In New Racing Surface Wolverhampton Racecourse is soon to be leading the way in racing innovation when they begin racing on a Tapeta surface in August, marking them as the first British racecourse to do so. Racing has been staged on all-weather surfaces at Wolverhampton since 1993, having first raced on a Fibresand track, followed by a resurfacing in 2004 to Polytrack. Wolverhampton follows in the footsteps of first class racecourses around the world that have staged racing on a Tapeta surface, including Golden Gate Fields in California, Presque Isle Downs in Pennsylvania, and most notably, Meydan Racecourse in Dubai.
Racing returns on Monday 11 August, which is the racecourse’s annual Family Fun Day. Mike the Knight and his wizard-in-training sister Evie will be appearing at intervals throughout the day, along with racecourse mascot Freddie Furlong. There will be free entertainment for the children to enjoy and exhilarating allweather racing for the adults. Accompanied under 18s are admitted free to the racecourse, and adult admission tickets can be bought for just ten pounds. There are five fixtures at the racecourse throughout August upon the racecourse’s return to
The racecourse is preparing for the most popular event in its history, when international reggae stars UB40, who originated in Birmingham, will be performing live after an evening race meeting. The date forms part of the band’s biggest UK tour for over three years. Most notably known for number 1 hits such as “Red Red Wine”, “Kingston Town” and “(I Can’t Help) Falling in Love With You”, the multi-platinum selling UB40 will be performing their well known and loved classics, intertwined with a few of the songs from their new album. UB40 begin the live music evenings at the racecourse, which run through the autumn and winter, featuring many racecourse favourites, such as Badness, Soul’d Out and Hipster, as well as a few racecourse debutants, including a Rolling Stones tribute, Wham/George Michael tribute and performing outdoors after racing on Ladies’ Evening (Saturday 6 September), boy band FATE. The racecourse has a fantastic reputation for offering superb Saturday evening entertainment, to enjoy with friends, family or colleagues, accompanied by a range of dining experiences.
The process began after Wolverhampton’s final spring fixture on Tuesday 29 April, since then, the former racing surface has been removed, essential maintenance to the track has taken place, and the laying of the new Tapeta surface begins imminently. Not too dissimilar from Polytrack, the racing surface will be made up of components including; sand, fibre, rubber and wax. Protect Your Hair This Summer
Photograph Courtesy of Penneys
By Helen Taylor It’s great for us to be outdoors, enjoying the sunshine, but it’s not so good for our hair. The combination of heat, sun and swimming can really have a negative effect on our tresses, leaving them looking dull, dry and frazzled. But don’t let that ruin your summer holiday; instead follow our tips and your keep hair looking thoroughly gorgeous. 1. Before you depart for your vacation, visit your hairdresser for a good trim. It’s best to remove any dry, split ends before you hit the beach to ensure your hair remains in tip-top condition. 2. When you’re relaxing by the pool, slather a leave-in conditioner onto your hair. This will help to protect against damage from the sun and will leave your locks looking thoroughly shiny, as the heat makes the product even more effective. 3. Always rinse your tresses with fresh water after swimming in the sea or pool. Both salt and chlorine dry hair out. 4. Keep hair up and covered as much as possible in the daytime. 5. Treat your locks to a few drops of a leave-in conditioning hair oil before bed. No More Bad Hair Days - Color Wow at Michelle Lawley Hair There’s nothing more annoying than finding those telltale signs of root re-growth only a few weeks after you’ve had your hair coloured. Fortunately, Michelle Lawley has got a great solution that’s ready and waiting at her Tettenhallbased salon, she explains: “Color Wow is a unique product; it’s a powder compound that adheres 78
to hair to effectively cover-up unsightly root re-growth. It’s not sticky or oily and doesn’t dry or dull hair. As it’s water resistant, the results last from shampoo to shampoo and enable you to carry out all your usual activities.” “It’s really easy for you to apply to dry hair at home using the specially designed brush applicator and
there’s no mess. With Color Wow you can rest assured that you’ll never have to worry about those grey hairs showing up again.” “We’ve got six different colours to choose from at the salon and each are priced at £28.50. You can paint them on as highlights, as well as using them for a block colour effect.” wolverhampton west magazine

Possibly the most significant advance in sculpting the perfect ‘Me’ Secretly we all want to be different to what Mother Nature dispensed – maybe younger, taller, shorter or with less excess in the places we cleverly try to disguise. But perhaps most of all, we desire to be as near to the perfect “Me” we could envisage. Much of what our DNA dictates we cannot change. And for the majority, we are just not ready for what full-blown, clever plastic surgery procedures can achieve.
For years, those who required body contouring bought into the liposuction dream, parting with millions of pounds for liposculpture or suction-assisted lipectomy procedures. The surgery permanently removed fat cells, allowing people to be thin without tortuous exercise regimes and low-fat, low taste diets. But what if the same results could be achieved without such an invasive procedure and at a fraction of the cost of a full surgical operation? Year on year medical science has invaded the beauty market, but a recent development is setting the bar for body contouring at a new level – without the painful discomfort of traditional lipo treatments. This innovation – 3D-lipo – offers a revolutionary fat reduction treatment and it’s available at Medi Visage, basted in Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton. This month, articles in The Daily Express, The Express online and OK! Magazine have ensured that the message about this treatment is ‘out there’ and the response for treatment has been staggering. Medi Visage business partner, Bibi Dodd, says: “We’re all set to go with this revolutionary piece of equipment. I’ve seen staggering results in skin tone and fat reduction and it doesn’t involve the normal rigour of exercise.” High profile fans of 3D-lipo have included Coleen Rooney, Liverpudlian wife of Wayne Rooney. Following the birth of her second child she decided on a helping hand from a beauty clinic to get back into shape. The therapy combines Cavitation (the use of ultrasound) which

converts fat cells into liquid that is then naturally drained by the body’s own filtration system, as well as a body sculpting treatment called Cryolipolysis, where fat cells are literally frozen away. Unlike other lipo offerings that utilise Diode Laser (I-Lipo, Strawberry and Laser Lipo) this new technology “physically destroys the fat cells.” The advantage of this is that the client is not required to exercise post treatment in order to metabolise the released fat. “Added to this, with the combination of radio frequency and 3D-dermology, clients are able to combine an effective skin tightening application for both face and body and also target the dreaded cellulite,” says Bibi. Partnering Bibi in the Medi Visage venture are established Wolverhampton implant dentist Jonathon Pugh BDS MSc (Implant Dentistry), Maxillofacial surgeon Mr Khaleeq-Ur-Rehman BDS, FDSRCPS, MBChB, MRCS (Gen Surg), FRCS (OMFS) and consultant dermatologist Dr Hamdi Hamad. The surgical team will offer a full body dermatological approach to patients and will, among other procedures, address anti-wrinkle facial aesthetics, skin cancer screening (including tissue biopsies), and the removal of moles, skin tags and basal-cell carcinoma (BCC). The most popular treatments in 2013 were: Bare Minerals makeup and strip lashes, Shellac nails, face and body art and, towards the end of the weekend, Elemis massage and facials. I have attended V Festival as a music lover for more years than I can remember. So, I’m going to let you in on my secret beauty

must-haves to keep you looking and feeling gorgeous all weekend. As we can’t all stay in the Glam camping area - which is like a home from home with clean beds, showers, toilets, restaurants and even a phone charger - make sure you don’t leave home without the following: • Hand sanitizer • Face/body wipes • Sunscreen - minimum factor 30 • Vaseline • Dry Shampoo • Water • Moisturiser • Toothpaste/mouthwash • Nail polish • Tinted moisturiser or tan for face
Try to buy as much as you can in mini sizes, as you only want a little bag for daytime. We put a festival survival bag together for our clients with travel sizes and samples so they can have their favourite brands with them at all times. This year’s festival trends include: bright neon nails, natural tanned skin - with hippie flowers and face art - as well as feathers, flower garlands and scarves for hair.

Look Beautiful on the Beach By Helen Taylor You’ve been toning up and getting into shape for months, ready to flaunt your bikini body on the beach. So, now your vacation is just around the corner, it’s time to consider planning your holiday beauty routine. As great as the long hot days are, they can really take their toll on your skin, so it’s important to maintain good beauty habits while you’re away to ensure that you’ll look thoroughly gorgeous when you come back.
Faking It Before you get to your sun-soaked holiday destination, you’ll need to be suitably tanned, so head to the shops and get your hands on a bottle of fake tan that will leave your skin looking beachready in no time. Here’s how to apply your product for a perfect, even, natural-looking result: 1. Thorough exfoliation is key to creating the right base, and it’s best done the night before. 2. Allow 24 hours between waxing and tanning to avoid those annoying dark dots that emerge as a result of the product building up in open follicles. 3. Be really generous with your moisturiser and make sure that it’s fragrance and colour free. Put plenty on your knees, elbows and wrists. 4. Grab a pair of latex gloves, squeeze a dollop of fake tan on to your hand and then work quickly and methodically, covering every inch of your skin evenly. Remember to include your armpits, toes and the backs of your ankles.
84
Photograph Courtesy of Next’
Smooth Skin 1. Don’t forget to cleanse, tone and moisturise. Keeping up with those beauty rituals will keep your skin looking hydrated and flawless. 2. Regularly apply and re-apply sunscreen. Ensuring that your entire body is protected against damaging UV rays is a must. Use a high factor, and remember to re-apply after swimming. Don’t forget to protect your lips too; use a nourishing balm that contains a sun-block. 3. Keep thoroughly hydrated by drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, more if you’re out in the hot sun for long periods of time. 4. Wear a large hat on the beach. Not only will you look chic, you’ll also be protecting the delicate skin on your face too. 5. Always apply after-sun lotion. A long day on the beach calls
for plenty of after-sun when you get back to the hotel.
Fresh Make-Up 1. Keep make-up light in the day by swapping a full-coverage foundation with a tinted moisturiser. Cover imperfections with a little concealer. 2. Wear one coat of quality water-proof mascara on your top lashes for definition. Better still; arrange a trip to your beauty salon for an eyelash and eyebrow tint before you jet off. 3. Sweep a peachy coloured blush over your cheeks for a flattering look. Peach tones look fabulous with bronzed skin and are a much better alternative to pink hues which only serve to add more redness to already flushed cheeks.

A course of 8 treatments is recommended over 4 weeks with 2 treatments per week.

How Parkside Dentists are making a Perfect Impression with their Patients If you’re looking for a new dentist, chances are you are seeking a complete dental experience rather than just someone to fix and maintain teeth. The notion of ‘going to the dentist’ as just a necessary part of wellbeing is changing as practices embrace a more accessible and friendly approach. During the last decade the emergence of boutique clinics, dental social media posting and regular advertising campaign challenges us to actually “enjoy a new kind of dentistry” has seen a radical modernisation of the profession. And this emerging trend, linked to strident advances in science, medicine and technology, are raising the bar to new heights in selling private dentistry care plans. The ultimate fusion of enlightened medical disciplines and modern materials and therapies, has now opened up a huge palette of options in every-day dental practice. Central to its commitment to remain in the vanguard of innovation, Parkside Dental Practice in Wolverhampton, has recently appointed a new principal, who has enjoyed an international stage for his pioneering research work. Carl Horton BDs MSc Periodontology (GDC 71768) has taken conference platforms at San Francisco, Gothenburg and Athens, sharing his finding on periodontology – the study of the supporting structures of teeth and how to treat the diseases that can affect them. A dental implant surgeon with the Jon Pugh Dental marque, Carl will spend the majority of his time at the Park Road West practice, but will continue his work at Total Implant Solutions in Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton.
Carl Horton BDs MSc Periodontology – on the cusp of dental evolution
“Parkside has some excellent dentists, a reputation second to none for its orthodontic work and a great ethos for patient care,” says Carl. “Joining the team is an exciting opportunity to engage more with families in the community and be relevant in what we do and communicate for seniors, families, young adults, teenagers and children,” he adds. But “experience” dentistry is not just about new, key appointments and a great care ethos; it’s about having the best possible medical kit to ensure excellent clinical outcomes.
Adds Carl: “We remain on the cusp of dental evolution at Parkside, but I believe that dental care is not just about the clinical excellence we deliver and the equipment that helps make it happen. It’s about embracing patients as individuals and adopting an holistic approach to their care. “For the time they share with us I will endeavor to change their preconceptions of dentistry forever,” he adds. The iTero inter-oral scanner in use at the Parkside practice
To this end, Parkside has installed the latest inter-oral digital scanner. For the orthodontic and general dentistry teams the iTero scanner provides precise mapping of the mouth without the need for uncomfortable, impression material. It’s empowering for patients as they get to see a 3-D image of their mouth on screen. it enables a better platform for dentists to explain procedures and provides a perfect ‘map’ for iTero-synchronised laboratories to make precise-fitting crowns, bridges and braces. The patient experience in non-invasive and painless.

Now Jan is Picture Perfect with Her New Look “I wouldn’t have my picture taken,” she confesses. “I know it seems strange, but I did not want to spoil the day for my son. That’s the way I felt. I’d taken some lovely clothes, the setting was lovely and you couldn’t have wished for better . . . the people, ceremony in the pagoda, the beach bungalow where we stayed and the way the locals were so friendly. “But my teeth were a mess. When I smiled you couldn’t see any of my teeth and I was so embarrassed. I not only spoke with my hand in front of my mouth, I ate like that too,” Jan, from Kidderminster, recalls. As the groom’s mum, the focus of attention was emotionally crippling. Now in her 60s, Jan’s troubles began some 40 years ago. Suffering with a gum disorder, her dentist carried out a full clearance. Jan tolerated a catalogue of denture prescriptions that never “felt comfortable or looked right” and for 15 years her food choices were seriously compromised. “I couldn’t eat apples, pears, or steak, my gums were always sore and I couldn’t chew properly,” she adds. Jan’s self-esteem hit rock bottom until she saw an article in a newspaper about Steven Burchell’s work at the Denture Clinic. Following treatment, Jan is confident and loves her new look. “On the picture from the wedding my face seems so small, but my whole appearance has changed since meeting Steven,” she adds. Jan, who found a new confidence and new look at the Denture Clinic
Camera-shy because of failing teeth, images of a dream wedding are missing a mum’s proud smile. The sun shone, the sea was as blue as the cloudless sky and a small, family group celebrated a wedding on the shoreline of paradise. With the warm, golden sand beneath their feet, they toasted the happy couple and made memories that would last lifetimes. Runaway Bay, one of the jewels of the Caribbean, had it all – magic, romance, a spectacular setting and the ultimate backdrop for wedding album pictures – and there were plenty to be taken.
Steven CDT DipRCS (Eng) says: “Jan came to me with dentures that were not really helping her. She had a lot of gum and bone erosion and her dentures were not stable. “She was not a suitable candidate for implant-retained over-dentures to address the stabilisation issues, so we made her some high-quality, traditional dentures, ensuring a precise fit with the cutting-edge technology we have at the clinic. The outcome is remarkable.” Says Jan: “I’m planning to go back to Runaway Bay with my husband in 2016 for our 50th wedding anniversary and guess who won’t be frightened to have her picture taken?”
But one person was noticeably absent from the captured images of the smiles, laughter and celebrations. Only a single frame – a group shot – featured the groom’s proud mum. Jan had travelled more than 4,600 miles to embrace the Big Day moment with five others in the wedding party, but in her own words, “I didn’t feel right.” Everything was perfect and “it was a lovely, lovely day,” but Jan deliberately melted into the background every time the cameras clicked. 96

Loose Dentures: Suction Could be the Solution A CUTTING-EDGE development to help resolve the stability problems faced by thousands of denture wearers is being offered by the Denture Clinic. Steven Burchell Dip CDT RCS(Eng) GDC108353, who heads the teams at his North Street practice in Dudley, and at Total Implant Solutions clinic in Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, says the invention has the potential to resolve all-toocommon denture stability issues.
Prosthetics are held in place by tiny valve-operated suction devices which are built into the prescription. A clever diaphragm principle, triggered by bite pressure on patients’ gums, creates a ‘sucking’ vacuum between the soft-tissue mouth lining and the prosthetic. Steven, whose clinics attracts patients from as far as Spain, the Isle of Skye and the Isle of Anglesey, says: “In recent times we have seen, what I can describe only as strident clinical advances, with implant-retained over-dentures, ‘teeth-in-a-day’ implant procedures and suction solution dentures, all coming into main-stream dentistry. “We also have clever injection moulding technology which allows excellent fitting outcomes and our clinical solutions have never been so appealing.
Steven Burchell Dip CDT RCS(Eng) – strident advances in clinical solutions
“Implant dentistry as a resolve for stabilisation issues is not suitable for everyone, neither is it all patients’ first preference. The Ultra Suction prosthetics system offers a possible clinical alternative.
The Ultra Suction system – another option to secure both top and lower dentures
“The beauty of this affordable technology is that it can deliver for the right patient excellent denture-retainer qualities without the invasive clinical procedures required for implant work.” Steven adds: “The device can be mounted on upper or lower teeth and because of its efficiency allows us to consider a reduction in the size of the acrylic ‘plate’ which can improve speech and taste.” The Denture Clinic can also be found at Wolverhampton, Kidderminster and Bearwood. All consultations are complementary.

When most people are asked if they have heard of a healthcare benefit plan most will simply answer with a no. However, benefit plans have been around since the 1870s and were developed from the hospital contributory scheme which was formerly known as the Saturday Fund or cash plans. A healthcare benefits plan is an insurance product that allows an individual to receive cash back on healthcare bills, such as, receiving an eye test and ordering prescription glasses. The idea of a benefit plan is to help make every day health treatments affordable and easily accessible. Most people assume that they can manage
‘normal’ healthcare costs, but if you are paying out regularly for optical or dental treatments the cost eventually adds up. Unlike private medical insurance (PMI), a healthcare benefit plan is an inexpensive way of looking after your health and finances. These plans are becoming vastly popular within the corporate market; as employers are opting to use these plans as an extra incentive for their employees. There are many plans to choose from which cover individuals, families, seniors and the corporate market. Paycare has been providing healthcare cover since 1874 and offers a range of plans to support its customer’s needs. A typical Paycare Plan protects you against the costs of Dental, Optical, Chiropody, Specialist Consultations
99
No medical is required to join
99
Premiums do not increase with age
99
There are no claims related charges
99
Claim settlement is quick and easy
99
Policies are pay-monthly schemes so you can cancel at anytime (no contract involved)
So let’s get down to the nitty-gritty… and how a cash plan works? The procedure to register with a healthcare benefit provider is much simpler and faster than PMI or other medical insurances; as there are less joining restrictions. Each healthcare benefits plan differs on what healthcare benefits are covered, the maximum amount you can claim per treatment, and the annual limit payout. Once you have selected the right policy and level of cover for you – you will be asked to declare any pre-existing medical conditions. There is usually a short qualifying period before you can submit any claims. Once you are set up, you can arrange a healthcare treatment covered by your policy, attend and pay for the treatment as normal, then send the valid receipt of treatment along with a claim form to your benefit plan provider and reclaim the money spent (up to your annual limit payout). Claims are usually settled within 48 hours of the provider receiving the claim form which means you are never left out of pocket for long.

Local Opticians Celebrates 20 Years in Business Practices to raise funds for charity to mark the occasion They also held a very successful open afternoon at the Compton practice. “As a local independent business, we are incredibly proud to be going strong after 20 years” said Tracey Taylor, Partner and Optometrist at Taylor Biddle Opticians. “Since opening the business, we have strived to offer our patients the very best eye care and continue to invest in the latest eye care advancements and technology. The anniversary prize draw was our way of saying thank you to our wonderful patients who have shown us loyalty and support since we opened in June 1994. We are also looking forward to raising money for two fantastic causes at the same time.” Taylor Biddle Opticians continually expand their range of eye care services. The Anterior Eye Clinic has proven to be very successful with dry eye sufferers. Optometrist Rosie Birhah who specialises in dry eye treatment uses the latest video microscopy scan to tailor her assessments and treatments to a particular patient’s needs and the results have been very positive. An Intuitive Colorimeter is the latest addition to their visual dyslexia assessment tools. It is a scientifically proven method of assessing the optimum coloured lenses required by some children and adults who struggle to read. It also been proven to relieve some cases of migraine.
L/R: Olha Lac, Libby Eaton, Mayor of Wolverhampton Councillor Milkinder Jaspal, Tracey Taylor
Taylor Biddle Opticians, who have practices in Compton and Wombourne celebrated 20 years in business in June. To mark the occasion, they are raising money for two charities. The Motor Neurone Disease Association was chosen by the staff as a charity that is very close to their hearts. The other is the Premature Baby Unit at New Cross Hospital who provided wonderful care to Partner’s Olha Lac’s son when he was born at only 23 weeks. They are aiming to raise at least £1500 for these two worthwhile causes. 102
To raise the money, one pound from every OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan taken between 1st June and 30 November 2014 will be donated by the practices. OCT is a revolutionary piece of diagnostic equipment that can detect a number of key eye conditions such as glaucoma, age related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy at the very early stages. Taylor Biddle Opticians thanked patients for their support with a free anniversary prize draw and gave away 20 brilliant gifts donated by their eye care suppliers and local businesses.
Olha Lac, who specialises in visual dyslexia says: “During the last three years our treatment has helped many children to achieve their best educationally and grow in confidence in their ability. I am very excited about our new addition and have no doubt that Colorimetry will help to achieve even greater results”. In May, the (then) mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Milkinder Jaspal visited the Compton practice. The Mayor works as a Governance Consultant which involves working in the education sector. Having seen the benefits of having the symptoms of dyslexia treated at the earliest possible age, he felt that it would greatly help a child grow in confidence and further develop a child to their full potential. wolverhampton west magazine

Tennis Club Going Strong After 90 Years! Linden Lea Tennis Club was founded in 1924 and has been a valued facility in south-west Wolverhampton for the past 90 years. The original courts were replaced by the Linden Lea housing estate in 1980 and the club has continued at Compton Park since 1988. This year the club is moving to a new purpose-built facility adjacent to the Wolves Indoor Academy. It is anticipated that the new clubhouse and three all-weather floodlit tennis courts will be completed by August of this year. This considerable financial investment has been funded by Wolves FC as part of their agreement with the tennis club and Wolverhampton City Council. 104
Linden Lea is a friendly club with sessions where members mix in on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings. In addition the club encourages members to play more competitive tennis by entering Men’s and Ladies’ teams in the South Staffs Leagues. The club has a resident coach who offers coaching on an individual or group basis. Linden Lea has a good social network whose activities include monthly lunches, club tournaments, a concert group, occasional quiz evenings and groups enjoying walking and golf. The Linden Lea Tennis Club has around 100 members and is keen to increase its membership prior to the move to its new site. The club is currently offering supervised tennis for
juniors attending senior schools on Saturdays from 10.30 to 12.00. The annual subscription this year for new members is only £45 and £15 for juniors. The club will be having Open Days for juniors and seniors. What are Powers of Attorney? How vitally important are they? There are two kinds of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA), one that deals with your Property & Financial Affairs and one that deals with your Health and Welfare.
Office of the Public Guardian, before they can be used by your Attorneys. Although we all tend to think of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney documents as useful for later life, it’s important to think what would happen NOW if you were unfortunate enough to have an accident or serious illness.
These are critical legal documents enabling you to give legal authority to an “Attorney” or “Attorneys” so that they can make decisions on your behalf, when you are not in a position to do so yourself, for example following an accident, stroke or the onset of dementia.
Don’t let that happen… protect your family… contact LaterLifeProtection
How would you cope if your joint bank account was frozen? What happens if you don’t have an LPA?
Can anyone say that they will never be involved in an accident? The property and affairs LPA will enable your Attorneys to do things like draw your pension or pay your bills. The health and welfare LPA enables your Attorneys to make decisions related to your health and personal welfare, for example what sort of care you receive. Both types of LPA must be registered with the
have to be submitted to the Court every 12 months and financial decisions are NOT carried out by close family or friends.
If you lose the capacity to be able to make your own decisions then your personal affairs will become the responsibility of the Office of the Public Guardian. In these cases a person’s affairs are placed under the jurisdiction of the Court who appoints a Deputy to act on your behalf and the Deputy is answerable to the Court. This can be an expensive route as Court approval is required for any act to be carried out, accounts

Ball Joint Pain in the Lesser toes - Morton’s Neuroma/Syndrome? Nerves that transmit messages to the brain from the toes pass between the metatarsal bones (long ones behind the toes). Excessive pronation (rolling in of the foot) or if the arch in your foot is weak, will cause the metatarsal bones to move closer together, and to pinch the nerve causing it to become inflamed. This is most likely to happen between the 3rd and 4th bones causing a pain or numb sensation on the inside of the two toes that the nerve comes from. Often a shooting sharp pain can also be experienced. Sometimes it is caused by a neuroma or benign tumour on the plantar digital nerves (situated in the web between the toes). It may develop due to ill fitting shoes which press against the nerve. The condition is made worse by athletes who spin on the ball of their foot such as golfers and tennis players. The pinched nerve causes pain or numbness on the sides of the toes nearest to the nerve.
What are the symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma? Pain on one side of a toe and the adjacent side of the next toe. Pain when you squeeze the foot. Pain if you press between the bones. A Mulder’s click may be heard/felt.

Act early to ensure your future is taken care of...
Nearly 3,000 people are estimated to be living with dementia in Wolverhampton. Over the next 20 years, that number is expected to increase by approximately 44 per cent to 4,430 people. The vast majority of the approximately 75 people per year expected to be newly diagnosed over the next two decades will not have made plans for their future care, and indeed where that care should be given. However according to FBC Manby Bowdler Partner Julie Burn, putting a Lasting Power of Attorney in place earlier rather than later can ensure that intended wishes are carried out, and enforced by law. Mrs Burn said a recent court ruling could give hope to people living with dementia who wish to remain in their own home. The Court of Protection decision in
the case of dementia campaigner Manuela Sykes has seen the 89-year-old leave a care home to return to the flat where she had lived for 60 years. “This case emphasises the importance of making ones wishes known before illness strikes. Manuela Sykes was a long standing campaigner for better treatment for dementia sufferers. When she was diagnosed with the illness herself, she made a Lasting Power of Attorney and set out that she wished to remain in her own home for as long as possible. “She was admitted to a nursing home in December 2012, when the local authority decided she was unable to take care of herself. But thanks to having her wishes set out in the Lasting Power of Attorney, she will now be returning home for a trial period, after the Court of Protection ruled that all viable options should be explored to satisfy her wishes,” said Mrs Burn. Westminster City Council had argued that it could not afford the cost of dedicated 24-hour care for the 89-year-old, but accepted the court’s decision and

is working with her representatives during the trial period. The Court of Protection is responsible for managing the affairs of people who have become mentally incapable, but by making a Lasting Power of Attorney – known as LPAs – people can appoint someone to look after their financial and health affairs in the event of incapacity. Mrs Burn said: “Putting an LPA in place when you’re fit and healthy avoids the delay, stress and expense for relatives in having to refer to the Court of Protection later on. Early action is important though, as an LPA is only valid if the person is capable of understanding what they are signing and its consequences. “LPAs tend to be thought of as being for older people, but they can be just as important when you are younger – for example, if someone is involved in an accident which leaves them incapable of managing their affairs.” The LPA must then be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used.

Education and Schooling by David Williams
As another school year draws to a close, it’s time to reflect on the successes and achievements of the past twelve months and turn our attention to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The Summer Term at Tettenhall College has afforded me lots of variety in my role as Headmaster. One minute I’m addressing an audience of more than 600 guests at our Annual Prize Giving, the next I’m reading fairytales to Reception children. In May we welcomed hundreds of visitors from the local community to our annual Bluebell Walk. Thankfully, the weather was kind to us and gave everyone the chance to explore our beautiful grounds at their very best. Along with our Gala Ball, a Charity Fashion Show, Prize Giving, and Sports Day it has been an exceptionally busy term for staff, pupils and parents alike. Finally this week, our end of year musical The Wiz, was enjoyed by record numbers and once again demonstrated not only the outstanding talents of our pupils, but also the hard work and commitment that goes on behind
112
the scenes from staff and parents to ensure that these annual musicals are a resounding success. However, amid all the excitement and activity, it can be easy to forget that summer can be an anxious time for some pupils and their families as they await their GCSE and A Level results. We help prepare our pupils for these exams by giving them additional revision support through supervised study, often extended beyond the school day until 6pm. It’s a new initiative, which has proved very popular. We are also fortunate that as a boarding school, we can offer flexi-boarding to allow pupils to come and stay during exams and were able to hold additional revision classes throughout this term. While we actively encourage independent study, revising alone can be an isolating experience. By offering supervised study in our library, we are on hand if pupils need us and can give them extra guidance to get the most out of their revision time. Yet it is also important to recognise that it can be a big step for pupils to go from being taught and guided at school to having autonomy over their study methods. Equally, we ensure our Upper Sixth pupils
have developed this skill to prepare them for higher education. Tettenhall College examination pupils have worked extremely hard, supported by dedicated staff whose pastoral care is outstanding. They deserve to do well and I am confident that a successful future lies ahead for them all even in these highly competitive times. Whilst exams are incredibly important, they are not our only measure of success. We are committed to helping young people develop into well-rounded individuals, whose lessons and positive experiences at school will serve them well for the rest of their lives and we believe that it is vital that academic achievement goes hand in hand with personal development. Of course learning is not just confined to term-time. The summer holidays, though criticised by some for being too long, can also be beneficial and rewarding. Yes, it is important to have some well-earned “downtime”, however there are a myriad of opportunities out there to ensure learning is a constant part of young people’s lives. Whether travelling to other countries as part of a family holiday, some wider reading or trying new leisure pursuits, it is important to keep our children’s brains active and learning should never stop.

Wolverhampton Grand Theatre 1894-2014 Celebrating 120 Years of Theatre Wolverhampton Grand Theatre will be celebrating 120 years of Theatre this December; we caught up with Chief Executive Peter Cutchie who gave us a brief history of the theatre. Following on from a long tradition of theatres in Wolverhampton stretching back to 1750; in December 1894 the Grand Theatre opened on Lichfield Street to popular acclaim. Before the doors even opened a contemporary reporter noted that ‘for those of us who have watched the red brick shell rapidly overhaul and outgrow the surrounding scaffolding, this is truly a grand theatre.’
116
Replacing the Theatre Royal – the site of which became the Central Library - it was built to complement the newly opened Victoria Hotel (the Britannia) next door. What made the Grand all the more remarkable was the speed with which it was built. From the laying of the foundation stone by Mrs C. T. Mander, Mayoress of Wolverhampton on June 28 1894 barely six months elapsed before a 2,151 capacity audience was seated in the auditorium to enjoy the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company perform Gilbert & Sullivan’s, Utopia Limited. The Grand Theatre is one of eminent Victorian theatre architect, C J Phipp’s, most enduring, intimate and beautiful creations. In this 120th year it is only right to celebrate the ongoing success of the Grand and acknowledge the debt owed to its staff, past and present, for their hard work and loyalty to the theatre. It is also important to acknowledge the commitment, especially in terms of voluntary effort or financial support of its Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Grand, our Sponsors, Business Club members, stakeholders especially Wolverhampton City Council and last but most importantly YOU the patron. Nest season kicks off with the smash hit show Dirty Dancing, the stage version of the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers classic musical film, Top Hat, a number of major dramas including two visits from the National Theatre, some exciting one night variety shows, performances from our local operatic societies and dance showcases from a range of very talented local children. Of course it would not be a complete season without the highlight for many, of any Grand Theatre year, our annual pantomime Cinderella starring Julian Clary. The existence of the Grand Theatre is strongly supported by all those who recognise the value a vibrant theatre brings not only to the cultural life of Wolverhampton citizens but also the very important

Antiques Extravaganza In Riverside Mill “The range of items on sale is vast, catering for all kinds of tastes and budgets – and that’s why the Old Mill is so popular. “People come here to browse and buy from all over the country, often spending hours here and having a break in our award winning tearooms, which opens for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. Some people stay all day!
John & Denis Ridgway
Any seeker of vintage treasures would do well to visit Bridgnorth’s Old Mill Antiques Centre housed in an historic seed mill on the banks of the River Severn. The centre has been open for 18 years and is as popular today as it was when it opened in 1996 – when literally thousands of visitors poured through the doors during the opening weekend. The Old Mill is one of the biggest antiques centres in the country,
offering four floors of displays and stands featuring literally something for everyone. Traders from all over the UK and Europe sell their wares at the centre and it has continued to flourish at all times, despite occasional downturns in the antiques market. “We have always been successful and managed to weather difficult times within the industry,” says Old Mill co-director Denis Ridgway. “We try to appeal to everyone, not just the informed antiques collector. Our view is that antiques and collectables are of general appeal and can be displayed in any home – whether period or contemporary. “You don’t have to be wealthy to collect and appreciate antiques, there are many items available at very affordable prices.” The choice at the Old Mill is tremendously varied. Jewellery, porcelain, militaria, pop ephemera, watercolours, oil paintings, prints, vintage furniture, silver, musical instruments – the list just goes on and on.
“We’re always busy, especially at weekends and during bank holidays. I think part of the attraction is that people can browse at their leisure and buy if they wish, there is no pressure from our sales team – they are just on hand to help and advise if called upon.” The Old Mill also sells a range of reproduction furniture, including pine and oak refectory tables made to measure, and period items include church pews, desks, dining tables and chairs, chaises, beds, day beds, wardrobes, armoires and cupboards. “Vintage furniture is lovely but sometimes the chairs in particular are not practical for everyday use in modern times – we’re a little heavier today than we were centuries ago,” says Denis. “Reproduction furniture provides all the old-fashioned charm and style with a more robust approach, plus sizes can be tailored to modern rooms – what worked in a Georgian mansion would not fit easily into the average home today!” The Old Mill is open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm. Parking is free and a UK-wide delivery service is available.
Jewellery on sale includes a fantastic selection of engagement rings (both period and reproduction), costume jewellery and crystal, and ranges in price from just a few pounds right up to several thousand for items featuring precious stones. “We have 80 dealers operating at the Old Mill, from as far afield as Brussels and Berlin,” says Denis. 118

Stranded Near Stourport By Rob Taylor goods, literally helping to drive forward the Industrial Revolution. The canal linked the River Severn with the Mersey and Trent making the town one of the busiest inland ports in the Midlands. So, very quickly five canal basins were built and the town expanded at a fantastic rate, with iron foundries, tan mills, carpet mills, barge and boat building yards all springing up. But then just like global economies, after the boom came the bust. First came the Worcester and Birmingham Canal in 1815. Bad news. Then came the railway. Worse news. So very quickly the town, which had emerged from virtually nothing like a volcano creating new land and life, was in decline. The canals were seldom used and left to rot.
I’m bathed in the glow of car tail-lights. The road is jammed-up as far as the eye can see. Nothing is moving faster than a snail on Valium. Who’s to blame, I wonder? The local council for allowing the commencement of yet more interminable road works? In which case, that’d be Worcestershire County Council, since I’m on the A449 in their neck of the woods. Or should it be the lacklustre labourers, who are cack-handedly vomiting Tarmacadam into holes at a speed more consistent with the pace of life in the Cotswolds?
while I write and that’s always hard because; firstly, I’m a man and cannot multi-task in the least bit and, secondly, because I’m teasing out a solution to this country’s transportation woes. And here it is: canals. Why not float all freight down the canal network, thus taking it off the roads, freeing them up immediately for people like me who have places to visit, like, Stourport-on-Severn. Or Stourport, for the lazier among you. Way back when, in days of sepia and before Black and White TV even, Stourport was - following the completion of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal in 1772 - integral in the transportation of
Recently however the canal basins have been restored to their former Georgian glory, creating a top attraction for some of the many tourists who today see the town as a quaint oasis of picturesque tranquility, far from the grime of the grubby Black Country. There are now many pubs, cafes and restaurants to enjoy while observing the hundreds of narrow boats plodding aimlessly up and down the locks. Leisure time is always best served slow, and I’m sure my plan to return trade to the canals and keep Britain on the go wouldn’t sit too well with recreational boaters on the barges, but, hey, that’s progress for you. It is always scary at the time; much better in retrospect.
Maybe it’s the fault of the Bank Holiday trekker, who has decided now is a good time to collect all his earthly possessions into an ageing, decrepit fibreglass hulk, before cheerily pottering off into the countryside for a week of walking, sitting, staring and using chemical toilets? Well it turns out, after eventually - by some miraculous hand of divine providence - the culprit crawls into a lay-by to allow traffic to flow once more, it’s the fault of a HGV. A lorry carrying heavy steel cargo. You may at this point be wondering why I am lumbering along at a speed comparable to said lorry, well, it’s because I’m thinking 120

Ascot Ladies’ Day Wolverhampton Rugby Club Hip Hooray! The sun put his hat on and came out to play at Wolverhampton Rugby Club, but was put firmly in the shade by the lovely ladies that attended the twelve annual Ascot Ladies’ Day event organised by Ken Clive. The day raises money for the Rotary Club which donates the profits from the day to local charities in the area. The theme for the event was “Lest We Forget” to commemorate the 1914-18 centenary anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War with each table being decorated with a beautiful poppy display designed by Ann Reymond Florist of Pattingham. All the ladies looked splendid in their summer outfits, hats and fascinators and were determined to have a grand time by looking good and betting big! The guests were entertained with a jazz band on stage as the first of many Champagne corks went pop for the pre meal drinks before taking their seats in the sumptuous marquee. The wine flowed as everyone

enjoyed the three course meal provided by Plyvine catering, and the conversation became more animated as the girls disagreed with the boys about who was going win the big race; the horse with best form or the jockey on number 9 because his colours were nice and he had a cute smile? The money went on the lot with the house bookie taking all bets. Brian & Sam Saunders Brian and Sam Saunders knew they wouldn’t be able to attend Wolverhampton Rugby Club’s Ladies Day this year, as they’d be travelling back home from their holiday when the event was taking place. We managed to take a picture of the glamorous couple though, before they headed off to the Royal Enclosure at Ascot. Brian told us that it was a great day - the weather was kind to them and watching the horse racing was exciting and thrilling. Unfortunately though, Brian didn’t back a winner!

PGA Professional at Patshull Park Hotel, Golf & Country Club
Golf Tips from Richard Bissell
This month we are looking at fairway bunker shots.
A lot of golfers find this one of the most challenging shots in golf. For a lot of people the real problem is actually being able to hit the ball far enough. The first thing to assess is the face of the bunker. Many golfers get too greedy and try to use too straight a faced club. You must pick a club with enough loft to escape from the bunker. (pic 1) The golden rule is at least get it out of the bunker. Key fundamentals = correct loft + solid contact.
1. SET UP Take a solid stance with your feet but do NOT bury your feet in the sand as you would do for a greenside bunker shot Grip down the club by about one inch as we need to take the ball clean from the sand. (pic 2) Ball position should be in the middle of the stance to ensure clean contact.
1
Align the club to your selected target but open up your stance very slightly which will in effect add a little bit of loft to the club.
2. SWING During the swing it is important to keep your height. Any dipping and it is likely to result in too much sand taken and a fat shot. Swing nice and easy. If you try and hit it too hard there is a possibility that your feet will move in the sand resulting in too much sand taken and a fat shot.
Happy Golfing

Stop Your Money Vanishing Into Thin Air Over time, air-con gas gradually depletes causing the engine to work harder which will result in using more fuel. That’s the message from HiQ Wolverhampton’s owner, Simon Bennett, as he advises motorists to get their air-con systems regularly checked to avoid paying out elsewhere. An estimated ten per cent of air-con gas depletes from the system every year causing it to become less effective which will increase fuel consumption. Though most manufacturers suggest replacing the gas and lubricant every two years, Simon insists that a yearly check will see motorists saving money at the pump. He said: “Fuel prices are at an all-time high and while motorists are looking for ways in which to save, we recognise many aren’t aware that having air-con systems checked is one of them. “As a rule, air-con systems are not checked during an average service so we advise motorists have regular check-ups and keep the air-con in frequent use throughout the year to keep the components lubricated. Simon added: “It is around this time of year when we always see an increase in problems,
often because motorists haven’t used their air-con systems for at least six months. “Like anything car related a poor performing system or accessory will lead to problems, which many motorists don’t appreciate.” HiQ advises that air-con systems need to be serviced every two years for optimum performance with a recharge gas top up service once per annum. HiQ Wolverhampton are offering a top up service for just £45 to keep air-con functioning to maximum efficiency. The system operating pressure will also be checked and gas and lubricant are added to the correct level.

Recently we have invested a lot of money in tooling to remove seized or broken injectors in M9R engines fitted in Trafic, Vivaro & Primastar vans in order to save our customers expensive repair bills. The seizing of these injectors is due to water ingress from poor sealing of the scuttle panel from factory. This water sits on top of the rocker cover which houses the injectors and over time the water penetrates the wells where the injectors sit. Corrosions then occurs which in turn short circuits the injector(s) causing misfires and cutting out issues. The problematic injectors(s) become an issue to remove due to the amount of corrosion they have suffered. We have seen many garages and customers incurring costs of £1000’s due to snapped injectors which have resulted in damaged cylinder heads and even worse complete engine replacements.
We can also carry out any other repair work to these M9R engines such as timing chain replacements and engine re-builds. Don’t risk the chance of costly repairs such as a replacement cylinder head or engine by attempting removal without the correct tools or knowledge, call the experts.
At present we have a 100% success rate. We will also seal the scuttle panel after the repair free of charge to prevent any further ingress of water. 138

The Citigo is extremely fuel-efficient, capable of delivering up to 68.9mpg, according to EU test figures, with an emissions level as low as 95g/km. Despite its compact design, the car is surprisingly roomy, with folding back seats that significantly increase the storage space. It is also packed with great features, such as an infotainment system that combines satellite navigation, Bluetooth and a multimedia player. This comes as standard on the Elegance model and as an optional extra on the S and SE.
Trust Group Wolverhampton is helping the economic recovery by offering the brand new award-winning Skoda Citigo from just £119.00 a month.

The offer forms part of Skoda’s “Three Big Reasons” promotion, which combines low monthly payments with two other attractions – three years’ interestfree credit and three years’ free servicing.
Trust Group Wolverhampton currently has Skoda Citigos available to test-drive. To make an appointment, call 01902 907070.

The New C-Class Estate As Multifaceted As Modern Life Stuttgart – With the new Estate model Mercedes-Benz will expand the C-Class family starting in September 2014. The Estate has a clear, emotionalsporty design, innovative technology, variability and a cargo volume greater than its predecessor. Its high-class, sophisticated interior makes modern luxury tangible with design highlights. With these qualities the Estate reinforces its reputation as a multifaceted lifestyle vehicle - outstanding for everyday use. In addition, with its many new assistance systems it not only offers the highest standards of safety, but thanks to intelligent lightweight construction, exceptional aerodynamics and new economical engines it also sets new efficiency benchmarks in its segment. The Estate model provides the stage for the world premiere of the Mercedes connect me services, which, among other things, make it possible to connect to the vehicle from anywhere at any time and retrieve the current fuel level online. Dynamic and of high value The new C-Class sets visual highlights with a modern, dynamic design that at the same time exudes sensuous clarity, arouses emotions and encompasses high-tech in perfect fashion. It is a vehicle focused on a high level of utility and functionality, yet still incorporates a high-quality interior, which was been adopted from the Saloon. With straightforward sportiness, flowing lines and highgrade luxury materials, it creates a modern, luxurious and at the same time sporty ambience. In addition to the base model, there are also three 142
distinct design and equipment lines each for the exterior and interior.
Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive: the intelligent car
Touchpad and head-up display
It is the declared aim of MercedesBenz to make the highest standard of safety available to everyone. For this reason the Estate adopts almost all the new assistance systems from the S- and E-Class, which have been enhanced with significant functions. The assistance systems increase both comfort and safety. MercedesBenz calls this Intelligent Drive.
The touchpad in the new C-Class Estate developed by MercedesBenz marks an evolutionary step. As on a smartphone, all the head-unit functions can be operated using finger gestures. The 65 x 45 millimetre control surface of the touchpad is built into the handrest on the central control panel and bordered by a highquality metal support – a design feature with a high-tech feel which exudes luxury at the same time. A head-up display is also a new feature in the C-Class Estate. As in a jet fighter, it projects important information directly into the driver’s field of vision, ensuring that there is less distraction from the road ahead. The system informs about vehicle speed, signed speed limits, navigation instructions and Distronic messages. Choose your own driving experience In the new C-Class Estate the driver can determine the desired driving programme at the push of a button. Depending on the equipment level, the driver can choose from various preconfigured drive programmes and one which the driver can design personally to a large extent. The following characteristics are available: “Comfort”, “ECO”, “Sport” and “Sport+”. The additional “Individual” option enables drivers to configure their vehicle to suit their own preferences. As is customary, the new C-Class is also available with 4MATIC all-wheel drive.
COMAND Online with hotspot functionality COMAND Online not only offers a larger display with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels and a special bonded glass cover such as is familiar from consumer devices like the iPhone® or iPad. It also enables digital TV/ radio reception and offers fast harddisc navigation, automatic tailback avoidance via up-to-date and accurate “Live Traffic Information”, an integrated WLAN hotspot functionality and the Linguatronic voice-operated control system. General Manager of MercedesBenz of Wolverhampton, Peter Smith, added “The team here at Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton were really impressed when the new C-Class Saloon first arrived in the showroom and now we have the new C-Class Estate to look forward to. The new C-Class Estate has certainly added a different dimension to the new C-Class range, and has a certain style about it that not many other models on the road at the moment can boast of. If you would like any further information on our new C-Class range, please contact one of the team on 01902 427897.” wolverhampton west magazine

The first-ever
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer sees BMW for the first time expand its portfolio to introduce front-wheel drive and three cylinder engines in the model lineup. Following on from the coupé as the second member of the new BMW 2 Series range, the Active Tourer combines dynamism, style, elegance and practicality in one cleverly packaged car. New lightweight turbocharged engines with three and four cylinders, a comprehensive package of BMW EfficientDynamics measures and the extensive connectivity provided by BMW ConnectedDrive are all elements in a driving experience that allows sporty performance and incredible efficiency. Stylish design, premium cabin and innovative packaging Practical shouldn’t mean prosaic: while the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is uniquely versatile it is also distinctively styled. From the low-rise double kidney grille, which is positioned lower than the headlights, a feature normally only found on BMW coupés, to the steeply raked windscreen and clearly defined and sculpted bonnet, the
BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has a low-slung, sporty appearance. Balance, as always in a BMW, is key and the short overhangs are classic BMW styling cues while the long wheelbase, wedge profile, L-shaped rear lights, crisp contours and eye-catching swage lines give the car great impact and athletic appearance. Despite the compact exterior dimensions, the interior is light and surprisingly spacious, with comfortable seating for five people. A large glass area ensures the cabin is light and airy throughout – an effect further enhanced by the optional panoramic roof and by the A-pillar triangle window, both of which also improve all-round visibility. Handling: comfortable ride with agile handling For the first time BMW has introduced front-wheel drive into its model range, but in order to do so, and retain the sporty characteristics necessary in every one of its cars, it chose to start with a blank sheet of paper. The result is a new, state-of-the-art, front-wheel drive system on the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer that balances comfort and agility – both key requirements of customers in the segment, but rarely met in other vehicles.
Two new engines: innovative three-cylinder petrol and lightweight diesel The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has innovative all-new transverse engines, perfectly matched to the space-efficient concept of the car. The new BMW 218i Active Tourer is powered by an all-new three-cylinder engine. This ultra-low-friction, all-aluminium core engine is part of a newly developed modular family comprising light weight, high-performance and fuel-efficiency, equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The result is CO2 emissions of only 115g/km, yet peak power of 136hp. The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer • Functionality with agility: clever packaging and new chassis innovations • Space for five occupants and huge load carrying ability • Two new engines from launch including innovative three-cylinder petrol • CO2 emissions from only 109g/km thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics On sale from September 27th, starting from less than £23,000 OTR.
