We have something to admit to you... for the last 15 years, we’ve had an unfair advantage! It’s not that we open later than everyone else so we can fit around you - although we do! Willows Dental & Implant Centre
Dental Tourism Dental tourism is starting to become more popular. I understand it, get a holiday to Thailand, Turkey or Budapest and have a brilliant white smile at the end of it. It can be a very attractive proposition. And don’t worry this isn’t one of those articles that I put out to convince people it’s a bad thing. We have seen some clients who have had some fantastic work done abroad; unfortunately we’ve also seen the flip side with dental work that has not gone so great. Really, the point of this article was to to say we’re here to help.

A lot of practices, in fact most, turn away clients that have had work done abroad. We at Willows Dental & Implant Centre have set up a network of translators that can communicate with clinics across the world to find out what treatment has been done and with what materials and suppliers. So if you’ve had some work done abroad and perhaps it’s not going as well as you were promised or you’d just like some maintenance, we’re here to help.
usually isn’t too much of a problem to put things right, but if you need to see that Dentist again, is this going to be difficult to return to that country? What is quality of the Lab Technicians work? In dentistry the Dentist prepares the teeth or places the implants, but the Lab ceramicist makes the veneers or the crowns to go in the implants. As you may notice on some of the popular reality shows, sometimes the smile makeovers carried out are not in keeping with the face. The ceramicists we use try to keep the teeth in beautiful harmony with the face, to make sure you continue to have the confidence to eat, smile, kiss and connect for many years to come. Our point is whatever happens we are here to help, as we have helped thousands of clients. If you would like any advice or to book in to have anything checked, just give us a call. Our team are ready to help.
If a client is dead set on going abroad for their dental treatment, we’d ask our clients to simply think ahead. Have you had enough time to think about your treatment? If you have a plane to catch and a tight schedule, it would make sense to be wary about being pressured into committing to treatments before you feel ready. Holidays come and go but the effects of dental treatment stick around for a lot longer. Have you been able to ask questions? Most dentists are really good at communicating with clients about treatments and different options; we even have Treatment Coordinators for this here at the Willows. If you don’t feel you can ask questions, or that you are getting answers that satisfy your needs, you should be able to have a second opinion. Don’t be afraid to ask for one. What happens if things don’t work out? Dentistry is as much of an art as it is a science. No matter how skilled a Dentist is, sometimes things don’t go as planned. It

FROM THE EDITOR
Received wisdom suggests that a spring editor’s letter should be full of references to frolicking bunnies, new-born-at-Easter chicks and lots of talk about the clocks going forward, as well as the thinly-veiled threat of a bit of proper sunshine. Don’t worry, we will get to that, but first, bear with me. Let’s first put the grim stuff well and truly behind us. More received wisdom for you: you should feed a cold and starve a fever, but it’ll take a lot more than that to defeat the Coronavirus. Although it’s worth keeping in mind that boring, old, regular influenza kills masses more worldwide each year and there’s barely a word of coverage about that in the media. So, I’d sleep easy. OK, next on my to-do list is Brexit. It’s officially over and done with: finally. Yes, on January 31st our nation let out a collective sigh of relief. Some of us partied, even. Plastic Union Jack flag sales reached World Cuplevels. Now comes the long road ahead: Prime Minister Boris Johnson warns us that there may be “bumps in the road”. There certainly will. There will certainly be a surplus of pro-active - if empty - buzzwords and phrases knocking around in the year to come as well: “unleash the full potential of the UK” is my favourite so far. And now to Mother Nature, who has unleashed upon us Storm Ciara, quickly followed by Storm Dennis, since I last wrote. Hitting huge swathes of the UK, felling trees and submerging villages, this terrible twosome still has some parts of the country underwater, with others resembling a quagmire. This is another warning from history that our flood defences are woefully inadequate.
If that’s enough of a recap for you, it’s time to point us towards the light of the coming season, to look forward to all that my favourite time of the year has to offer. There’s bags of stuff inside to tempt you out of hibernation and into better weather but if you’re still shy, start off inside in your home - with a good old-fashioned spring clean. Three top companies are among our advertisers - Bright & Beautiful, RC Cleaning and Touch Dry – and every one of them offers its customers a spotless reputation for squeaky-clean service. Then you can turn to our feature on the latest in kitchen trends for inspiration for your next home improvement, whether you are moving or staying put this year. Home improvement never seems to fall out of fashion. Cast your eye over our retrospective article on our favourite estate agents, Berriman Eaton. And after reading our feature on home security, you’ll surely want to check out the protection on offer from local firms, SGS and Profence. With Mother’s Day, Easter, a later than usual (because of VE Day’s 75th anniversary) May Day Bank Holiday, the clocks moving forward and WWFC and my beloved West Brom on the cusp of another stellar season, there’s plenty of reasons 06
to head outdoors to some of the many places we have showcased in our Eating Out and Entertainment sections. We have also a vibrant Health and Beauty section with everything you need to help banish winter blues: because spring isn’t just a time for refreshing your home. It’s time for you to take centre stage, so catch-up with Nick at Royston Blythe for the latest hair trends; try on for size fashion from Aristocats and Number Seven. And then when you’re looking a million dollars, strike it lucky by entering one of our amazing competitions. We’ve got three for you in this edition: from The Grand, Wolverhampton Racecourse and West Midland Safari Park. If you’re anything like me, after the recent atrocious weather, you’ll be looking forward to finding a golf course near you that’s not underwater. Whether you’re an ultra-competitive scratch player, dying to scratch that itch, or a more relaxed recreational player in it for exercise and to socialise, be sure to see what our local golf clubs have to offer. And then get on your bike over to our page on former World champion cyclist and recent octogenarian Hugh Porter’s 80 for 80 charity challenge. And after life in the fast lane, it’s over to tranquillity and restfulness at Willows Care home for a lesson in what this fine, family-run business has to offer older folk in the area. Then check out a fact-packed and stimulating Education section, full of the best and brightest. I look forward to much brightness in the sunny months to come. See you in May…

WORLD RENOWNED CARTOON ARTIST WAS BLACK COUNTRY’S BEST KEPT SECRET New book looks at the life of Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg, cartoon illustrator behind Korky the Cat and Desperate Dan. If you grew up in the 50’s or 60’s, then chances are that receiving your favourite comic was a weekly highlight. The Dandy, Beano and The Topper ranked amongst the most popular and were all produced by publishing house, DC Thomson. It may come as a surprise to know that one of Thomson’s premier artists lived and worked quietly in Langley, throughout his prolific career. Acknowledged by comic book aficionados as one of the greatest comic artists the UK has produced, a new book celebrating the life and work of Charlie Grigg has been published by Dr Brian Dakin and the Grigg family.
Dr Brian Dakin

Charlie Grigg, known to his friends as Chas, was the cartoon artist who drew legends such as Korky the Cat, Desperate Dan, Splodge, Foxy, Willy Nilly and The Red Wrecker amongst many others. Born and bred in the Black Country, Charlie’s flair for drawing became apparent at an early age and his passion for art stayed with him as he grew and left school to work in engineering. The book charts how he was encouraged by his wife Marge, to take the leap into full-time cartoon artistry at the age of 34. He continued to draw for DC Thomson for over 20 years, producing many of The Dandy’s summer and Christmas annual covers. It is estimated that in his lifetime, he produced over 10,000 illustrations and 1000 covers for
The Dandy alone. When he retired in 1983, he turned his hand to illustrating some of the famous ‘saucy seaside’ postcards found in souvenir shops up and down the British coastline. Produced by publishing company Bamforth, many a seaside holiday wouldn’t be complete without sending one of these iconic cards home and they are now collector’s items. In 2013, Charlie passed away at the age of 97. In his final years, he unfortunately suffered with dementia and although he may have struggled to recognise friends and family, he could still reproduce his famous illustrations perfectly. His work has inspired local poets, song writers and artists and a retrospective of his work was held at Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery. A Blue Plaque now adorns the school he attended as an infant in Rood End. A quiet and modest man, his family know that he would be a little shy but very proud that his work is finally receiving the recognition it deserves. The Life of Charlie ‘Chas’ Grigg, The Black Country’s Best Kept Secret is 160 pages packed with anecdotes and memories from Charlie’s family and friends and also features his life story in his own words. It costs just £10 +PP with all proceeds going to The Alzheimer’s Society and other local dementia charities. It is available to order from www.charliegrigg.com.

facIng tax Increases
I have a great number of clients who have, over the years, purchased property to let and to maximise returns through gearing taken a buy to let mortgage. This was a great way to hold a property portfolio as all mortgage interest payments were tax deductible. However, in 2016, we saw the implementation of some new tax rules that meant over the next four years, the amount of mortgage interest which could be offset from rental profit reduces. In this current tax year (2019/2020), landlords can offset 25 per cent of their mortgage interest from their rental profit. From April 2020, this reduces to zero. There is a tax credit relief available based on basic rate tax however landlords will have to pay income tax on all of the rental income 14
they receive meaning that many of them will pay more tax.
payments and still yield a generous profit to the landlord.
This new tax rule is going to change the landscape of the buy-to-let market.
A private landlord would typically complete a tax return each year and on it they would detail the income from their property portfolio and then detail all of their expenditures such as management fees and repairs, along with other expenses including the mortgage interest.
How it normally works For example, let’s say a landlord has five properties in their buy-to-let portfolio. The properties are worth about £700,000 in total however there are 5 lots of £100,000 interest-only mortgages, a total of £500,000. Let’s say the interest rate on each buy-to-let mortgage is 3%. The total interest-only mortgage payments each month would be £1,249 or £14,988 each year. Let’s say the income received on each property is £600 each month - in total this is £3,000 each month or £36,000 each year. Clearly we can see that despite the large amount of mortgage debt and mortgage payments that need to be paid, the rental income will fund these mortgage
Income tax on the rental income profit is then charged at the normal rate of income tax. But as you can guess, from April 2020, many private landlords with buy-to-let mortgages will simply pay more income tax on their rental income. With this same example, let’s say the interest charged on those buyto-let properties goes up to 6%. (I would imagine most people reading this would have experienced paying something close to that rate at some point in the past). In my example scenario, the mortgage interest payments would increase to £2,501 each month or £30,012 each year. wolverhampton west magazine
This scenario looks a lot less attractive for a landlord. If they cannot offset interest-only mortgage payments from their rental income profit, this will result in significantly lower returns and then they will inevitably have to consider alternative options.
How will landlords adapt? Let’s say a landlord runs their property business through a company rather than as a private venture; would these new tax changes I mentioned above apply? The answer is no.
On the flip side companies do not have a capital gains tax (CGT) allowance so, when the property is eventually sold, corporation tax is paid on all the gain whereas individuals have an annual allowance this year of £12,000 so a couple owning a property jointly can make a gain of £24,000 with zero tax liability. My opinion is that for many years property has been seen by many as the “go to” investment however moving forward I no longer think this will be the case.
If a company owns the property portfolio then the tax which is paid on the profit of the business is corporation tax. At the moment, the corporation tax rate is 19% however this is going to drop to 17% in the next tax year (2019/2020) making the idea of holding properties within a limited company or specifically a SPV (Special Purpose Vehicle) quite attractive. This is because a lot less tax will need to be paid which means a much greater net profit. I must caveat that any landlords who do decide to move their private property portfolio across to a SPV would need to take proper advice because there are lots of implications to consider including stamp duty, lending criteria for new mortgages and various other considerations. That said, at face value, it feels like these tax changes will nudge many landlords to move across to this type of model going forward. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Wolverhampton West
41 CLUB
By Nick Berriman
As I write the first Wolverhampton West 41 Club article of the year it is a great time to reflect on the achievements of our club in its first nine months of existence since its formation and subsequent Charter Night in March 2019. Having taken the decision to start a new 41 Club the first question that we had to ask was ‘Would we attract any members?’. Fortunately, the answer was a resounding ‘Yes’ and under the
chairmanship of Andy Timbrell the club is establishing a solid membership base of around twenty friends and colleagues and we are seeing healthy numbers attending our meetings. The origins of our new club lie in Wolverhampton Round Table 17 and for those who are not aware of Round Table and 41 Clubs, Round Table is an association that was created in 1927 and is, essentially, an environment for professional men to meet, socialise, network, have fun and raise money for charity. Wolverhampton Round Table is one of the oldest in the world, being the 17th Club to form an organisation that now boasts 35,000 members in 60 different countries. And 41 Club? That became the association to continue
the socialising, charitable work and fellowship once you were too old for Round Table! The highlight of the year was having the opportunity to share in a superb night, organised by Gerry Hobbs of Tettenhall 41 Club, to celebrate the 90th Charter Night of Wolverhampton Round Table 17. Eighty members, past and present, of Round Table were there and Wolverhampton 41 Club and the 41 Club of Wolverhampton West enjoyed the company of past-Tablers from Seisdon, Lichfield, Willenhall and Tettenhall among others and the memories flowed thick and fast. The year was rounded off by our Christmas Sleigh week. Traditionally conducted by Wolverhampton Round Table it was a joint event this year. Visiting local schools and many areas within Perton, Pattingham and Codsall it is was great fun and a good way to boost the coffers for charity with almost £3,000 being raised.
As a very young club we are still finding our feet and I look forward to keeping you updated in the months to come about our progress and hopeful success. If anyone is interested in finding out more about what we do please feel free to contact me at nick.berriman@berrimaneaton.co.uk for a chat!

Hugh Porter’s
80 for 80 challenge Over 60 cyclists took to the track on Sunday 26 January at WV Active Aldersley to complete Hugh Porter’s 80 for 80 Challenge. The multi-world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist completed 80 laps in 90 minutes along with the cyclists he invited to join him for his birthday challenge. Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Claire Darke, dropped the flag to mark the start of the event before taking to the track on her own bike to complete some of the 80 laps. The aim of the challenge, which was held to celebrate Hugh’s 80th birthday, was to raise money for Compton Care. Approximately £6,450 has been raised for the local charity where he is a patron, and there is still more to come in. Whilst the action was taking place on the track, a 90-minute outdoor spin class was held in the grandstand for WV Active customers and members of the public to get involved.
20
Taking part in the outdoor spin class were three of City of Wolverhampton Council’s directors, Deputy Chief Executive, Mark Taylor, Director of City Environment, Ross Cook and Director of Public Health, John Denley. Councillor Steve Evans, cabinet member for city environment, was there to support the event and said: “The event was absolutely fantastic and there was a great atmosphere in the stadium. “Well done to all of those who took part in the cycle and the outdoor spin class; we’re honoured to have
been involved in the event and to host it at one of our leisure centres. “I’d also like to thank Hugh and everyone else involved for putting on such a unique event to raise a substantial amount of money for Compton Care.” The Just Giving page for the event remains open for donations: www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/hugh-porter80 To find out more information about WV Active, visit www.wvactive.com

All Aboard the Rotary Shelter Bus! A unique solution to rough sleeping.
The sight of folk sleeping rough in the streets of Wolverhampton is becoming more commonplace. Nationwide, according to figures released by the charity Shelter, more than 300,000 people – equivalent to one in every 200 - are officially recorded as homeless or living in inadequate homes. This figure is drawn from official Government data and Freedom of Information returns. Although rough sleepers are the more visible end of homelessness, it is estimated that 60% of those who are homeless do not actually show up on official figures. This is especially true for single people who, despite holding down a job, for a variety of reasons have no home of their own. In Wolverhampton, Rotary has decided to give a boost to the work of our local homeless charities, Enterprise Homes and The Good Shepherd, by trying to make a difference in a unique way – a mobile hostel, using a bus! The bus has been donated by National Express and, as a result of an enthusiastic drive by members of the Birmingham Breakfast Rotary Club, backed by Wolverhampton’s 5 Rotary clubs, funds have been raised to pay for its conversion into a sleeping accommodation unit. It is capable of providing beds for 10 people in sleeping pods, together with a kitchen, consulting room, two shower/toilet facilities and a dining area. Rotary in Wolverhampton
has been closely involved with fundraising and the conversion of the bus and it has now been donated to the local homeless charities, who will be fully responsible for its operation. Rotary will continue to raise funds to support the on-going operation of the bus, but, says Richard Green, of the Rotary Club of Wolverhampton, “It is vital that we hand over the responsibility for the well-being and safeguarding of the boarders to the professionals of Enterprise Homes and The Good Shepherd, who are qualified to give the highest standards of care.” The bus will drive around the City – about 30 miles every day – and when a rough sleeper is seen, the bus will stop and the volunteers on board will chat to the homeless person and offer them accommodation and food for the night. Using the consulting room, while the bus is stationery, the volunteers will discuss ways of arranging employment, permanent accommodation and general care resources. At the end of its run, the bus will go to the new Good Shepherd Centre at 65 Waterloo Road, and be securely parked up for the night. The rough sleepers will make their own way to the Centre to take up the free accommodation and hot meals provided. Under each individual sleeping pod, there is a small cage for dogs, which many of the rough sleepers have, to spend the night on board as well.
There are 5 Rotary clubs in the city: Wolverhampton, Wednesfield, Tettenhall, Bilston and Wolverhampton West, and Wolverhampton St. Georges, each meeting at different times in the week. For details contact www.wolves.rotary@gmail.com 24

The Friends of Bantock House Museum & Park It is thought by many people that little gardening needs to be done in winter, but experienced Registered Charity gardeners know No 1065808 that nothing could be further from the truth. Here at Bantock the BUGs (Bantock User Group) team had a very busy February involved in various projects. Early in the month help was given to the Rangers in clearing part of the wildlife pond to ensure that it continues to provide a healthy environment for its inhabitants and those around it. Fortunately the date chosen for that task turned out to be a calm and sunny day so team members didn’t mind too much getting slightly damp.
The plants for this project had been purchased using money awarded to the Park from Ward Funds.
Their next session was spent filling gaps and generally filling out the longer edible hedgerow across the park, and planting 6 fruit trees within it. Saplings were also planted in the shorter hedge, although the waterlogged ground there had forestalled plans to plant further fruit trees along it.
If you would like to support either or both groups please call 01902 331272 or email bantockfriends@virginmedia.com to become members and help fund projects within the house and park or 01902 342715/341930 to join the BUGs team in their monthly gardening and litter-picks.

The last session of the month saw them replanting two rose beds within the Rose Garden, the plants having been purchased from funds raised by the Friends of Bantock

FOLLOWING YOUR DREAMS ONE MAN’S QUEST TO BECOME A PUBLISHED AUTHOR Eddie Johnson is, on the surface, just a regular guy, flick forward a few pages and you can see his advert for domestic appliance repairs, but his deepest desire has always been to be an author. About forty years ago Paul Weller produced ‘That’s Entertainment.’ It wasn’t immediately released as a single and only ever peaked at number 21. Eddie had many groups of friends. Some liked bands such as AC/DC, Iron Maiden, and Motorhead, others preferred Madness, The Specials, The Beat etc, his loyalties were often tested. Back then he was the rarest of breeds, a skinhead, moon stomping, heavy metal, headbanger. His hair was cropped short, his jeans held up with unnecessary braces, but he also rode motorbikes and wore leathers. The Jam were a million miles from either of his tastes. The poet John Lydgate wrote it, President Lincoln quoted it, “You can’t please all of the people all of the time.” Regardless, one day whilst relaxing at his best friend’s house, Eddie heard the lyrics to That’s Entertainment and they stuck with him. Being with this very friend at this very moment, was, as would be the case on many occasions, pivotal. The last verse of the Weller masterpiece reverberated around his head and he calmly said: “Dave… If ever I finally write a book, that’s what the title will be!”
Incidentally, according to Weller himself, the lyrics were written in about 10 minutes whilst drunk after getting home late one night. Contrary to this Eddie’s book took many years to start and nearly as many to complete. In 2006 inexplicably he started to experience multiple repetitive dreams. After years of dreaming about writing, ironically his own dreams were now to become the subject matter. As the project grew and his desire to be published evolved, he soon found that getting literary representation for his ideas was very difficult. It seems that, whether your book is good or bad is largely an irrelevance. Getting noticed is the key. So, whilst continuing to seek representation he chose to take a different route to market. His path lay between agent driven traditional publishing and the modern route of self-publishing. Forty years in the making it is now a dream realised. Part two is expected to be released in the next few months. Find Part One which is out now on Amazon. Search by title or go via www.edjpublishing.com The Foreword is by TV’s Nick Hancock. If you like the book please leave positive feedback to help Eddie promote the title further.
His friend Dave smiled and simply said: “I hope you do mate... That will be entertainment.” And so the line “Two lovers missing the tranquillity of solitude,” thirty seven years later morphed to eventually become the title: Breaking the Tranquillity of Solitude.

Lightly flour the pieces of braising steak and fry in small batches until well browned. Remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a plate.
2 tbsp oil 1kg braising steak, cut into large pieces 2 tbsp plain flour, well seasoned 3 onions, sliced 500ml Guinness 2 sprigs thyme
Dumpling Ingredients 75g butter, frozen and grated, or 75g suet 150g self-raising flour 1 small onion, grated 2 sprigs of thyme, leaves stripped and chopped Water for mixing

The sauce will sweeten and thicken during the cooking time. Make the dumplings (towards the end of the cooking time) by mixing the grated butter or suet, flour, onion and thyme together and season well. Willows Dental Reaching New Heights As part of Willows Dental Charity and Community Program, Kirun, one of Willows long standing Dentists has visited Nepal, famous for its Himalayan Mountains for two weeks. Kirun made the amazing decision to travel to the Shree Mahendra High School, Neelkantha in the Dhading district. After studying for so long to get where she is today, and coming from a community who place a strong emphasis on serving and helping others, Kirun felt that doing this was one of many ways to give back. This was something Kirun has always wanted to do, an opportunity to provide healthcare to others less fortunate than ourselves in the UK, and to be
able to use her skills to assist others in need. Kirun also felt that this provided the opportunity to challenge herself and experience a different way of life. The trip was undertaken by the Oral Care for Developing Countries project. Due to the horrendous weather conditions, the roads leading towards the school where Kirun and the rest of the dental team were going to be located were severely damaged, this meant the route had to be taken on foot which ended in an incredibly difficult trek that took hours and hours! Due to the horrific damage to the roads, it was impossible for Kirun and the team to stay at a local B&B approximately 1 hour away as planned. Therefore, half of the team slept in the school library and the other half slept in tents on the school playground. Throughout their stay in Nepal, the team faced many challenging and upsetting scenarios. On day four, a heavily pregnant woman had walked for miles to reach Kirun, requiring urgent help as she was suffering with a severe dental abscess and was in extreme pain. This caused a lot of distress for the people who had been patiently waiting for days to be seen, as people were desperate to get to the front of the queue knowing their opportunity was coming to an end. On another day, the team travelled to a local family to treat their father who has been paralysed for 30 years, unable to leave his home. They performed an extraction whilst the patient lay on the ground on his stomach (the only position he was able to keep), next to a Buffalo! That evening, the family bought fresh buffalo milk to the camp as they were so grateful for the teams help. During Kirun’s stay in Nepal, she had the amazing opportunity to mentor Nepali dental students
42
and newly qualified Dentists – who acted as the team’s translators. They were also accompanied by three professional trekking guides who set up tents for the camp, kept a close watch on the team and cooked some of the best food Kirun has ever tasted in her life.
Throughout Kirun’s stay, the camp treated over 1,250 patients!! The team had originally set out to only see pupils of the school however; this turned into their families, the staff, and anyone else who turned up in desperate need of help. People were travelling from other villages as the news of the incredible team’s arrival had spread fast. Kirun saw how refined sugar is creeping its way in diets everywhere, not just in the West and the devastating effects this has on the mouths of children all over the globe. This really was the experience of a lifetime and Kirun would thoroughly encourage others to try something similar if they are able to, as this experience will show anyone the local community in a way that a hotel never could. wolverhampton west magazine

What’s cooking in 2020: Top kitchen trends this year
By Chelsea Watkiss
Does your kitchen interior need a kick into the new decade? Now that we’re recovered from the festive season and winter blues, it’s time to give our space a little TLC. Whether it’s a subtle lick of paint or a full overhaul, here are this year’s hottest new styles to tempt your kitchen with.
Sustainable materials With environmentally conscious resolutions coming out top this year, it’s no surprise that this year’s kitchen trend follows in suit. The start of 2020 has seen a huge demand for upcycled and reclaimed wood - with interior now favouring homely, softer tones as opposed to the bolder, darker hues that have shaded in previous years. From concrete cupboards to matte stone worktops, it’s certainly decided that interior design and the environment are going to be friends this decade.
Seeking ways to improve energy usage? Have a look at the Everhot cooking range sold locally in Wombourne’s Flaming Fires. These products top the market for economic efficiency, having been specifically designed to run on renewable energy. Speaking of 2020 being a greener year… Dulux has named ‘soft green’ for its chosen 2020 Colour of the Year. In recent years, dark blue and navy were the hype, however this new decade has brought it’s own new palette to refresh your kitchen. From Forest to Olive, Mint to Sage; it seems all shades of
44
wolverhampton west magazine
the colour are making a statement entrance to interior this season. If darker green is more up your street, pairing it with white marble and lighter worktops will work wonders to help bounce the light around the room.
Two-tone schemes This new decade is set to be full of varied dynamics and kitchen interior couldn’t agree more. 2020 will see a scrap of safe, matching tones in exchange for the daring burst of a two-tone aesthetic. Deep, dark units teamed with lighter shades elsewhere will inject character and depth to any space. Or, for a more adventurous approach, patterned wallpaper will add a unique juxtaposition to matching cabinets. From mixing textures and styles, there really is no end to the possibilities of incorporating this trend.
Make a bold finish with brass Interior experts have predicted a huge rise in warming tones for 2020 - with industrial brass set to make a bold stamp on the year. This rich colour is ideal for enhancing on-trend greens and blues. Whether it’s off-setting stormy shades or adding contrast to a calm complex, brass will add a contemporary edge to any kitchen. Interesting statement taps, hinges, knobs and handles are also rising in popularity, giving the perfect excuse to incorporate brass without having to revamp the whole kitchen. Sometimes it’s the finishing touches which make the biggest impression!

Estate Agency? Nick – The complete lack of necessity for individuals operating within the industry to be qualified continues to frighten me. Legislation to require estate agents to be qualified should be put into place immediately – we all hear too many stories of cowboys and malpractice. Something to sort the wheat from the chaff would be good. Caroline – It is always frustrating that a sale can fall apart just because a buyer or a seller changes their mind about a sale / purchase just because of a whim or a fancy, despite the fact that the innocent party may have incurred substantial costs. I appreciate that it is an impossible task in some respects, but I would love to see a system put into place that delivers more certainty to the process once a sale has been agreed.

Home Security By Rob Taylor
Just how secure is your home? It’s a question which seems to keep few of us awake at night. What to do at work in the morning and other lifestyle pressures seem to take precedence except for the occasional mind-wander onto the subject – usually after we’re prompted by a news report or word reaching us about a spate of break-ins in the neighbourhood. Regrettably what spurs most of us into action is the stark reality facing victims after their private sanctuary is violated in the worst way. They say an Englishman’s home is his castle, so isn’t it about time to fortify your defences against the dangers we all face on a constant basis? Isn’t it time to stop thinking about home improvements and soft furnishing until we get our house in order? Simple and relatively cost-effective measures such as installing outdoor security lights, using gravel instead of tarmac, keeping hiding spots behind bushes and walls to a minimum and locking tools and ladders away in a secure spot all help. Another must-have for any concerned homeowner right now ought to be installing anti-snap, anti-bump and anti-drill AAA rated locks. A recent survey of 1,000 UK adults carried out by LED Hut found a total of 69 per cent of Brits fear they will be burgled, but few are active in taking steps to ease peace-of50
mind. Common measures taken range from old chestnuts such as leaving lights and the TV on, closing curtains and run on to employing the latest burglar alarms and CCTV surveillance. However technology brings with it some problems: despite 28 per cent of those surveyed investing in a security gadget to feel safe, only 65 per cent know how to use them and one in three forget to set them properly. This is a fatal flaw that can undermine everything, as Wolverhampton-based security experts SGS warn: “People tend to neglect their alarm systems when they find that they require regular maintenance to keep them functioning efficiently, “says Company Director, Simon Gennard. Alarms that go untested and may not work can affect insurance cover also. “We offer maintenance agreements which provide real value for money and reward our customer’s loyalty.” So the message is clear: use the experts – especially if you are in a high-risk area. Unfortunately, Wolverhampton occupied an unenviable 4th spot
in a recent nationwide list from Choosemycar of where motorists are most likely to have their vehicle stolen or broken into. A total of 3,440 car crimes took place over the past 12 months in Wolverhampton. Of those, 774 involved car theft. And thefts from home driveways figure heavily. But there are steps you can take to prevent yourself from becoming a statistic and Profence has the answer in the form of parking posts. The experienced local firm supplies and installs many elegant solutions – there are posts that fold down, lift out and also push into the ground – to help deter thieves, making sure your car remains exactly where you park it. In a world on the brink of a smart-technology takeover and all of the incumbent risks posed to privacy and security from faceless multinational companies and underground hackers, it’s refreshing to get to grips with some timehonoured simplicity in home security. So take action today. wolverhampton west magazine

WASHERWISE
EXPERT APPLIANCE REPAIRS There’s nothing more frustrating than finding that a previously trusty domestic appliance won’t work anymore. However, before you start looking for an expensive new replacement, why not try giving Washer-Wise, a call first? With over 3 decades of experience in the trade, they are the ones to call. Company owner, Eddie Johnson carries out repairs to washing machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers, electric cookers and various other selected items. Washer-wise also supply white goods if yours is physically not repairable or financially not sensible to be repaired. The company was originally established in North Staffordshire in 1995. Eddie bought the company from its original owner when he retired due to ill health. He continues to look after the existing customers, but has concentrated on developing the brand in the mid to South Staffs area. The company quickly became established locally here as Eddie lives in the area. Washer-wise now has an excellent reputation, working mainly across the Wolverhampton and Stafford areas. As Eddie explains: “We obviously charge for our services, but customer satisfaction is the priority, not profit. Our work comes mostly as recommendation from previously happy customers and we always try

to ensure that we provide our best possible service for everyone. We carry out repairs to virtually any make or model of appliance ranging from the likes of Hoover, Hotpoint, Beko and Bosch, right through to the more prestigious brands such as Siemens or Miele.” The Washer-Wise motto is: ‘Fast friendly service at prices you can afford’ and as stated Eddie tries to ensure that every one of his customers benefits from an efficient and cost effective repair to their faulty appliance, where possible, but if things are not viable to be fixed, he says:
“We strive to mend our customer’s appliances, but if a repair is not viable we also offer a very competitive replacement service.” Taking the stress out of the new purchase process – and often saving you pounds in the process – Eddie sources the new appliance, takes care of delivery, installation and even removes the old machine. “When replacing appliances the product range includes nearly every brand available, sourced to suit the individual requirements of the customer. The products are delivered and installed normally within a few days of the initial instruction.” Thanks to his committed approach Eddie has earned a wealth of loyal customers, who are keen to share their positive feedback, as can be seen on the washer-wise website pages, along with lots of other interesting articles.

Dirty fascias, grimy conservatories and blocked gutters don’t just look unattractive; they also devalue your property. That’s why it’s important to regularly treat your home to a professional clean.
“Well maintained gutters are essential, that’s why it’s so important to have them regularly cleaned out to keep them working effectively. Installing Hedgehog Gutter Guards prevents gutters from blocking.”
Fortunately, the team at RC Cleaning are ready and waiting to transform your home.
Many homeowners have benefited from Richard’s cleaning services since he started the company in 2009.
As owner, Richard Cotterill explains: “We undertake all aspects of exterior cleaning from top to bottom. We clean roofs, fascias, soffits, inside and outside of gutters, window frames and sills, garage doors, porches, conservatories and orangeries.” And the company also install Hedgehog Gutter Guards: “Many homeowners don’t realise just

Protect your car with a parking post from Profence
There’s been a rise in car thefts from driveways in recent years and so, protecting your vehicle has never been more important. Fortunately, there’s an easy way to deter thieves and make sure that your car stays on your driveway, as Shane Gamble explains: “Here at Profence we’re really pleased to be able to offer our customers a range of parking posts which will serve to protect their vehicle” Although Profence are fencing experts they also install bollards for both domestic and commercial clients so moving into parking posts was a natural progression. “There are many options when it comes to parking posts: there are posts that fold down, lift out and also push into the ground and we supply and install them all.” Whatever your requirements the Profence team can help you find the parking post that best suits your needs. “A small driveway will only need one post located behind the vehicle whereas a larger driveway will need several posts strategically placed for proper protection.” 56
Installing a post is a really simple way to give you peace-of-mind, whether your leaving your car on your driveway overnight or whilst you’re away on holiday. “There is no doubt that a parking post is a real deterrent to thieves because it shows that the homeowner takes security seriously and is doing what they can to safeguard their vehicle frombeing targeted.” Of course, the presence of a post also ensures your driveway is kept clear: “Posts can be used to keep parking spaces free too, which is particularly useful for our commercial clients.” Whatever the client’s requirements the Profence team are always onhand to offer help and advice. “We help our clients find the solution that’s right for them so that they can protect their vehicle,” adds Shane.
So, whatever car you drive make sure that it is protected this New Year with the help of a parking post from Profence.

Prepare for the growing season
Beware of sharp frosts in March and April that will spoil vulnerable plants and soft shoots – have some fleece handy and check the weather forecasts, if we’re likely to get a frost put the fleece over the tops of plants to protect them. open start spraying them fortnightly against black spot, mildew and aphids, best control is achieved by using two different products alternatively, so pests don’t build up a resistance to one particular chemical.
Dead head spring flowering bulbs as they finish, particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on and top dress with fertiliser, they’ll send the food back to the bulb and you’ll get a better display of flowers next year. Snowdrops can be split at this time of year into smaller clumps. Remember to dead head spring flowering bedding plants as well to encourage more flowers. Pansies in particular are a cold weather plant and the mild wet weather during the latter part of December did them no favours. Black spots on the leaves are a symptom of this mild weather. Remove as much as possible and keep plants on the dry side if you can. As the spores can lie dormant in the ground avoid planting pansies/ violas in the same position for 12 months. Plants can be sprayed with systemic fungicide to discourage disease spread. Many of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up – Lilies and Gladioli. Always
plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Lilies, especially Tree Lilies benefit from being started off in pots and planted outside once growing strongly. They don’t reach their full potential in height for a couple of years but are well worth the wait. Dahlias can be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse.
With so much damp weather over the last few months there’s going to be plenty of moss in lawns. We have in stock MO Bacter which is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns. This feeds the lawn over a 12 week period and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil and which when added to fertiliser will consume material like thatch and moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment. Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Plant your first and second early potatoes, followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears.
Rose pruning should be finished now, once the new growth has several sets of complete leaves

“We had the opportunity to learn about so many special individuals who go above and beyond in our communities each and every day, so to pick just two winners was incredibly tough.” After sifting through so many deserved entries, it was 13-year-old Louis Johnson who was crowned our very deserved Ambassador of the Year. Since the age of just five, Louis has fundraised over £25,000 for charities in the region such as Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, the Steve Bull Foundation, Mary Stevens Hospice and Cry Wolves, including £9,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. We were also thrilled to recognise Andrea Bexton as our Hero of the NHS for her work as a Sister in the Neonatal Ward of New Cross Hospital. After experiencing two pregnancy losses, a baby boy who was born prematurely weighing just under
2lbs, and a little girl who also had complications, she decided that her purpose was to work in the neonatal department to help other families and babies in times of difficulty. Andrea commented on her win: “I wanted to give something back and I’ve been through quite a lot – but I’ve got my dream job now. It’s nice to see the babies go home with their parents. And it’s wonderful to get this award, it’s really nice. All the hard work has paid off.” Being part of the Express & Star Heroes Awards was hugely rewarding and we were thrilled to sing the praises to all of those who deserve every ounce of recognition. We’re ecstatic for Andrea and Louis, as well as for all the other winners who were recognised on the night — we wish them all the very best in the months and years to come!

Following the launch of its staff charity initiative last year, Paycare is calling all good causes in the region who need help to get in touch. Its MyGiving scheme sees each staff member provided with £250 which they can either donate directly to charity or use to amplify one of their own fundraising initiatives such as a marathon or skydive — helping them to make an even bigger difference.
“Which is why we’d like to invite any local causes, projects or charities in need of support to get in touch. While some of our team have causes they’d like to support due to having personal experiences with them, others may luckily have not been touched by a particular issue and so we’d like to know more about what people are doing to help others in our county.

A care home with a difference Life at The Willows Care Home is built around making every day extra special. Whether it’s enjoying a day out in the home’s mini bus, an extended visit from family and friends or even a Classic Car Show, for residents at Codsall’s long established care home there’s always something new to experience. As owner, Peter Goss explains: “We’re passionate about enabling residents to live the best life possible and so we are always working to promote and encourage activity, which is essential for a healthy mind and body.” And, there’s always something happening at The Willows: “We have regular visits from many different entertainers and activity providers, from armchair exercise classes, singers and dancers, exotic animals, as well as visiting theatre groups and of course, there are the regular
64
trips to local places, like garden centres, the cinema, RAF Cosford Museum and even the Air Show but also simple activities such as a walk to Costa for a coffee and cake.” Peter and Ruth Goss took over the care home in October 2018, and with the home manager, Kerry Roberts, have brought a unique approach to the home which has enriched resident’s lives. “We want to create a real ‘home from home’ for our residents, a welcoming place for their family and friends to come and visit - whatever their age. We are a family-run care home and we know just how important family is.” And, that’s why Peter and Kerry have constructed a programme of events which involves residents’ interests and preferences and serves to bring residents together with their family and friends:
wolverhampton west magazine
“We have held some great events since we took ownership of the home. Our classic car show which took place in our grounds last summer - was a fantastic success. Elvis is a favourite for some of our residents and so we arranged a tribute act to perform for them too. We have plans to host similar events this summer and build on last years success.” There are no visiting limitations for resident’s family and friends and there is even a dedicated children’s play area on-site for the younger generation to enjoy. Care staff also ensure there is never a dull moment at The Willows and spend time with residents playing games and puzzles or just simply having a friendly chat. We have a new activities co-ordinator starting who was voted ‘Carer of the Year’ in 2019 and is heavily involved in the local community and fundraising. With strong roots in the local community, Peter sources most of the ingredients for The Willow’s home-cooked meals from local suppliers such as ‘Pete’s Produce’.
“We pride ourselves on the high-quality and nutritious meals that we serve our residents and we’re always keen to support the local area because our community is very important to us.” Every resident is treated as an individual at The Willows and a care plan is constructed for each resident’s own needs and according to their own choices. And, input from families and friends is encouraged every step of the way. “We place strong emphasis on hygiene, nutrition and independence and our highly skilled staff work to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. And, we’re proud to offer specialist full time dementia care,” adds Peter. Spring clean
your home
with Bright and Beautiful January is considered the best time to make significant lifestyle changes, but, if you haven’t felt motivated, there may be good reason for this. In colder climes, spring is the time of renewal and change, as the weather starts to warm up and sunshine makes us feel more energetic. The first week of Lent is known as Clean Week, where it is traditional to clean the house from top to bottom. In Persian culture, the term khaneh
tekani translates literally, as “shaking the house”! On a more practical level, March was considered to be the month when warmer weather arrived; just right for flinging open the windows to let in the fresh air. Charmaine Nicolson, Director of Bright and Beautiful Wolverhampton says “When the first rays of sun emerge, our phones ring more, as the sunshine lights up people’s homes and they realise that they might need our help, after the long winter! As a professional housekeeping company, we understand that foundations are important, which is why we perform a spring clean, or deep clean for all our clients on the first visit, to clean
their home, from tops of kitchen cupboards, to pulling out sofas and washing down woodwork. It’s not uncommon for our clients to tell us that it feels like their home has been decorated. We also only use the best, eco friendly products, so as well as being kind to your home, we are kind to the wider environment. This ‘spring clean’ gets everyone’s service off to the best start, meaning future visits are about maintaining these standards.” Need regular help, or even just a moving house spring clean, then give Charmaine a call on 01902 290290, or email wolverhampton@ brightandbeautifulhome.com

POPULAR CHILDREN’S MARKET RETURNS… This April Penkridge Market will be holding another fantastic Children’s Market, giving you the opportunity to sell all of your unwanted items; find fantastic bargains, plus give the kids a great day out at the same time. The Market, which will take place on Sunday the 26th April, will be entirely dedicated to children, with stalls selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children entertained, with a petting farm, donkey rides, taster sessions,
fairground, free craft area and much, much more. The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for adults, it’s a great, affordable day out for all the family.
Over 60 stall holders are expected, selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to handmade wooden toys, knitted items and personalised gifts. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market, making it a fun day out whatever the weather. There will be lots of animals for the children to meet, with ‘Farm on Wheels’ providing a petting farm and giving children the opportunity to bottle feed their lambs. Lower Drayton Farm will also be bringing
along a tractor for children to sit on, as well as animals to feed. Kate Kingsley, who was the brainchild behind the event said: “We had a fantastic response to the event last year, with thousands of people attending and commenting on how much they enjoyed the day. I think parents really value the fact that they can pick up incredible bargains and keep the children amused at the same time. It also gives parents the opportunity to sell their nearly new children’s clothes, toys and equipment without commission, and with a stall only costing £12, they can hopefully make a great profit.”

dining out FOOD
The Oakley Arms
By Helen Taylor If you’re local to Brewood then you’ll already know that to enjoy amazing food, a fine selection of drinks and a fantastic dining experience there is only one place to visit, The Oakley Arms. And, if you’re not local, then it is time to discover just what the fabulous country pub has to offer, which is exactly what I did when I treated myself to a well-deserved Saturday night out with my partner Matt. Making our way through the pretty village of Brewood, we headed a short distance outside of the centre before pulling up at the pub. Despite it still being fairly early when we arrived, the car park was already busy, and, it would soon become clear why.
72
Stepping inside we were met by the warmth of a roaring open fire which was the perfect welcome on a bitterly cold February night. Heading straight to the bar, we passed plenty of happy-looking diners who were enjoying all manner of delicious-looking dishes. With a bar stocked full of fine wines, spirits and beers, there were plenty of tipples to choose from. With a glass of wine in hand, we were led to our table by bar manager Tom and sat down to take a look at the restaurant’s impressive menu. Admiring the beautiful decor, which exudes country charm, I glanced outside and was amazed to see a lake set within stunning grounds and
wolverhampton west magazine
a pretty stone terrace that undoubtedly provides the perfect outdoor seating area in the summer months. Despite the lovely view outdoors our attention quickly turned back to the menu which was complete with a selection of mouth-watering starters and delicious-sounding main courses. Rooted in modern British cooking but with an exotic twist, the seasonal menu has something for everyone and is supported by a wine list offering quality yet affordable selections. To start, Matt chose ‘pan seared scallops with caramelised parsnip puree, crispy pancetta, chestnuts and apple gel’ £11.95. I adore halloumi so, unsurprisingly, I opted for the ‘halloumi fries with sweet chilli sauce’ £5.25. Beautifully presented, each starter combined a delightful blend of flavours which proved to be the perfect introduction for the courses to follow. Our waitress, Yas worked hard to ensure that our every need was met as we eagerly awaited our main course choices: ‘deep fried cod in beer batter with chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce’ £14.25 and my selection, ‘wild mushroom tortellini with baby leek, king oyster mushroom and Madeira broth’ £13.95. Again, the presentation was excellent and the portion size generous. The quality of the ingredients was clear, as was the undeniable skill of the chef. All conversation was fixed solely on the food and we couldn’t stop enthusing about every bite. Once our plates were well and truly cleared we moved on to dessert. Of course, our expectations were now incredibly high and our selections didn’t disappoint. Matt couldn’t resist the ‘lemon tart with fresh raspberries and Chantilly cream’ £6.25, for me the ‘dark chocolate and praline torte with boozy cherries and cherry sorbet’ £6.75 was impossible to refuse.
Savouring every delicious mouthful we finished off the delightful desserts and agreed that The Oakley Arms was undoubtedly our new favourite restaurant. And, judging by the almost full restaurant it seemed that there were plenty of other diners who shared our view. Soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying a couple more drinks before leaving, we couldn’t help but make plans to visit again next weekend so that we could enjoy the whole experience all over again.

something for everyone at halfpenny green wine estate If you think that Halfpenny Green Wine Estate is a destination that’s just for wine lovers, then think again. There’s an amazing day out waiting for all of the family in the picturesque surroundings of acres of beautiful South Staffordshire countryside, as our feature writer Helen Taylor discovered one sunny Sunday afternoon. I’d been trying to find the perfect birthday gift for a special friend all morning when I drove down Tom Lane - on my way to Telford - and stumbled across Halfpenny Green Wine Estate.
80
A family business, established in 1983, Halfpenny Green Wine Estate has 30 acreswolverhampton of vines managed by Martin, which produce award-winning wines, crafted by his son Clive. The acclaimed shop, restaurant, deli and tea room are run by Clive’s wife Lisa, and offer a great day out for visitors.
west magazine
I’d passed the vineyard plenty of times before but never taken the time to drive up and see just what was on offer. And, I was so glad that I did. Within minutes of entering the estate’s fabulous shop and deli - which is stocked full of delicious culinary treats from leading suppliers, as well as freshly prepared meals made onsite by the vineyard’s own chefs - I’d soon filled a basket full of mouth-watering buys that would delight any foodie. Making my way up to the Wine Loft, still in search of that special gift, I found a bottle of the estate’s own Sparkling Rose and discovered that the label could be personalised for my own message, and what’s more, that my haul of tempting treats could be turned into a special hamper.
I picked up a selection of bottles of the most popular wines: a delightful Penny Red, Penny Black, English Rose and Black Country Gold – each of which offers excellent value for money at just £9.50.
The estate’s own gift vouchers completed the present perfectly and so, I turned my attention to finding something special for myself.
www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk
Alongside award-winning wines, there is a fabulous selection of gin, whisky and rum and there’s also a specially designed outside space that is perfect for tastings. The Wine Loft’s newly-built balcony offers guests a space to sit back and relax and take-in the fabulous views of the vineyards, whilst sampling the estate’s finest wines. Unsurprisingly the Wine Loft is a favourite with connoisseurs and in addition to tastings, guided tours are available, as 81
well as a special educational course which is run by the estate’s own Wine and Spirit Education Trust accredited expert, Helen Farquharson, for those keen to learn more about wine. With lunchtime fast approaching the enticing smell of Sunday dinner led me to the estate’s restaurant where I found a menu that had something for everyone: a choice of roasts, sandwiches, salads, paninis and homemade burgers. So, I called my partner to tell him to bring the kids and join me for lunch.
Everything at the restaurant is freshly prepared using locally-sourced products and ingredients and the menu is changed seasonally. The food was quite simply delicious and the estate’s ‘Long Acre’ dry white, complemented it perfectly. The restaurant is also the setting for the vineyard’s ever-popular Vintage High Tea which is available seven days a week (subject to booking) and there’s a weekday menu made-up of lunchtime classics and modern favourites - cooked freshly to order - served between 12:00 and 3.30 Monday – Saturday.
There’s also a dedicated function room ‘The Wine House’ which is housed next door to the winery, which can be hired for all-manner of private functions.
After relaxing for a while in front of the restaurant’s log burner, we decided to head outdoors and wander around the estate’s Craft Centre, which features 15 independent businesses which each offer something different: there’s everything from gifts and crafts, candle and glassmaking to an on-site beautician, photographer and dog groomer. Not to mention the centre’s own blacksmith who draws crowds when showing off his skills.
www.halfpennygreen.co.uk
And then, there’s the Wild Zoological Park which proved to be a very unexpected and exciting treat for my two kids. The park boasts an array of animals: lizards, snakes, spiders, crocodiles, parrots, vultures, meerkats and marmosets, to name just a few, and the whole experience serves to educate visitors about animals and highlight the importance of conservation. My kids thought it was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed it too.

For our readers flirting with the idea of changing or upgrading their hairstyle, what is your advice? Take your time and don’t rush into something radical overnight. Do some research and make sure you find a fabulous hairdresser with a great reputation. Our team are all trained by myself, Royston and our in-house Education Managers and they also attend lots of external courses and fashion events. They lead the way with the very latest trends and techniques and whether you’re wanting a daring short hairstyle, an incredible bob, you want to transform your long hair or to add hair extensions, you can always find a specialist at Royston Blythe. Come in and enjoy a consultation with us, we will guide your new look with our knowledge, inspiration and expertise.
How do we find inspiration? Enjoy browsing magazines and scrolling through Instagram for inspiration and create yourself a mood board on your phone that you can share with your hairdresser during your consultation. We regularly have new clients in our salon who have stopped people on the street to find out who their hairdresser is - so never be afraid to give someone a huge compliment….if you love their hair, tell them and ask them who cut or coloured it!
Short and medium length hairstyles are in the spotlight this year, do you have any favourites? The best haircut is the one that looks and feels good on you! I love those classic and iconic pixies (think Twiggy in the ’60s and Halle Berrie’s 90’s trademark style) with a modern and tailored twist. They can be adapted to complement the individual face-shape, they’re timeless and can work for any age. A well-cut pixie would be feminine yet strong and long enough at the front and on top so it remains super versatile and so that it can be styled so differently for every occasion. Shorter length bobs that really frame the face and highlight bone structure can be striking and are a favourite at Royston Blythe. Kaia Gerber (daughter of Julia Roberts) looks

fabulous with her new jaw-grazing bob that has a slight undercut crop and Bella Hadid’s blunt, chin-grazing super90’s bob that she revealed for the Vogue Fashion Festival in Paris is a stunner. A slightly longer shoulder-length bob (think J-Lo’s new super blunt version) is ideal for those who are wishing to gradually switch to a shorter style. What to consider when changing your hairstyle Colour me beautiful A fabulous cut is only as good as the colour and condition of your hair. Whether you want a statement platinum, a glossy chocolate or a soft and subtle balayage, clever colour placement and carefully chosen tones that complement your complexion are a must. The colour specialists at Royston Blythe tailor and personalise every colour for each individual client and offer you lots of inspiration during an in-depth consultation.
Style like a pro If you want your new hairstyle to look good in between your salon visits, you need to take some expert advice from your hairdresser on how to style and which products to use at home. Auto book Be prepared to visit your stylist regularly for trims that will keep your hair healthy. Healthy, well-cut hair (whatever the length) is so much easier to manage and style and gives the wow factor.
So, whether you’re ready to take inspiration from the Glossy Posse (Eva Mendes is the latest in a long line of A-listers who have chosen to abandon their long signature waves for a short, chic bob) or you still need some convincing, it’s time you checked in with the stylists and colourists at Royston Blythe for some expert advice and a stunning new look.

HOW TO GET THE PERFECT LOOK WITH NATURAL FILLERS, MICROBLADING & FACE FREEZING Believing beauty totally comes from within, if we feel beautiful we become beautiful. Deborah has strived her whole career to create and find perfect treatments to achieve this, such as the Bee Sting Facial using her DEBORAH MITCHELL
patented natural form of Botulism Toxin, ABEETOXIN®. Offering natural fillers with Heaven’s unique techniques, treatments and products was the ‘natural’ step forward to offer a full medi-spa experience. “Whatever treatment I’m carrying out, I am always incredibly mindful to make sure that the results are completely naturallooking.

“To get the best from your fillers you need to look at the rest of the face and make sure that the skin is looked after and refined. Our clients have found that they’ve had longer lasting results from their fillers when using our Age Defiance cream, which also removes spots, scars and lines.”

“People are increasingly worried about the shape of their facial features and fillers are a massively effective tool in making a real difference. Although I am primarily a holistic therapist I want to bring my clients all treatments that will make them look and feel their best.” And, Deborah is fully qualified to perform the treatment after achieving the highest possible accreditation from the UK’s leading training school: “I’m thrilled to be able to offer fillers which create a really natural and flattering look, no matter where they are being injected and my clients have been amazed by how just a small amount of filler can enhance their entire face.”

I can also use the fillers to change features that clients are unhappy with, like a hook nose, as well as being able to use fat removal injections to reduce unwanted fat in the cheeks and jaw line.”

“When this lovely client walks in to my clinic I think, ok, how do I make her look even better, I ask her what does she not like about herself. She replies ‘chip monk cheeks”. “So I use a very small amount of natural filler on top of the cheek bone, a touch on the chin and add a

SEMI-PERMANENT MAKEUP AND MICROBLADING: With a comprehensive menu of the latest semi-permanent treatments you can leave it to the talented team to create a look that perfectly suits you. Heaven Founder Deborah Mitchell was one of the first in the industry to introduce semipermanent makeup techniques, first appearing on television 30 years ago to show her expertise. She is also renowned for her expert eyebrow microblading. “The key to successful semi-permanent is to ensure it looks as natural as possible,” she explains. “We are not here to offer someone a false look – it’s about enhancing your already beautiful features“. ‘You can have natural looking eye-liner and lip liner that will make you look younger and feel more confident. With microblading I’ll even leave the odd eye brow hair slightly out of place so even I can’t tell that they’ve been done.” One of the most innovative treatments offered is the Heaven Skin Blush which allows colour to be applied under the skin – this can be done with either foundation or blusher to create natural-looking highlights, remove pigmentation and camouflage defects. 92

“We are able to match the skin tone so it looks as natural as possible, and it means you don’t need to wear heavy makeup,” Deborah explains. “We use a device with tiny needles to apply the colour and over time it can actually help to improve skin texture and tone.”

Using natural, results-driven ingredients work in synergy with our highly trained Angels giving our clients the very best techniques in hands on therapy, medi spa and filler treatments. “I always strive to make my clients feel perfect, this comes from not always feeling so myself, either my skin had acne and then later the scars to the my body being unshapely after having the children, to then the lines, wrinkles and pigmentation”. “My new treatments and machines are cutting edge. Heaven medi spa is bringing these treatments together with the very best results and highly trained staff who will advise our clients what is perfect for them. I want my customers who enjoy Heaven Skincare products such as my HERO product the Bee Venom Mask to have the ultimate smooth skin and the best treatments I can offer”.

Protect your child’s future vision Experts warn that by 2050, half of the world’s population (a staggering 5 billion people) are expected to be short sighted. More intense education and a lack of time spent outdoors is leading to an explosion in the condition. There is, as yet, no cure for myopia. The physical change of the elongated eyeball cannot be reversed (even laser-eye surgery can’t do this). People with myopia have an increased chance of developing serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma and retinal detachment in later life. The higher the myopia the greater the risk.
How can contact lenses for children help to preserve their vision? Thankfully, you can do more than correct their vision with glasses or contacts now - you can actually slow the progression of their myopia! How? There are 2 options: EyeDream Ortho K lenses or MiSight contact lenses, both of which are available at Taylor Biddle Opticians and are suitable for children aged 8 upwards.
Here’s how each work: MiSight MiSight soft contact lenses are worn during the day. They will correct your child’s vision in the same way as glasses do, but also signal to the eye to stop growing longer — as elongation of the eye is what results in myopia. You may be concerned about how your child will cope with wearing them but in our experience, we find children quickly adapt to wearing them as they are easy to use and provide a high level of comfort.
EyeDream Ortho K As with MiSight contacts, Ortho K contacts also provide vision correction, but these are rigid lenses which are worn overnight while your child sleeps. They imperceptibly flatten the surface of the cornea, which is what results in crystal clear vision the very next morning. Your child can then go about their day seeing clearly without 104
wearing contacts or glasses. In addition to providing vision correction, these lenses have also been shown to slow down the progression of myopia in children. They are safe to use, as they are only worn in the home at night, under parental supervision and are arguably as comfortable as wearing normal soft contact lenses. These revolutionary Myopia Control contact lenses offer more than vision correction – they ensure that your child’s eye health and vision is being protected as much as possible by reducing the risks associated with advanced myopia. To find out if your child could benefit from either EyeDream or MiSight lenses, we need to start by doing an NHS comprehensive examination, so we can determine their latest prescription and check their eye health. Simply book an appointment for your child at our Compton or Wombourne branch and our experienced optometrists will also be happy to answer all of your questions about myopia control. wolverhampton west magazine

Hearing and vision are important for our health and wellbeing, though we don’t often think of our senses in this way. The Hearing Care Partnership together with Taylor Biddle Opticians have given their guide to building health across our lifespan through better hearing and vision.
What is healthy ageing? The World Health Organization defines it as “the ability to grow, learn and make decisions, to stay active. To be and do what you value throughout your life.” Different things affect our ability to age well, including our genes, our lifestyle, our location and our relationships with friends and family. It’s true that some of the choices we make in early life can alter the course of our later life, like how much we exercised and what we ate. But it’s never too late to make a positive change.
• Stay connected: Do things that give you joy and meaning, whether that’s playing tennis, taking up photography, or visiting places you love. All of these things help you to feel more positive. • Check your hearing and vision: People who look after their hearing and vision by getting expert advice and the right treatment, stay more active mentally and physically. By looking after our eyes and ears, we can be ready for whatever comes our way. Seeing things more clearly. Hearing and being heard. And enjoying more of the people and things that we love.
Staying connected Our eyes and ears are essential to healthy ageing. That’s because our hearing and vision are central to maintaining active social lives. While we may notice changes in our vision, it can be harder to detect – or come to terms with – the changes in our hearing. You may not notice changes in your hearing yourself. Instead, those closest to you will likely spot the signs first. So, what are the warning signs of hearing loss? • You might start watching TV at a volume that is louder than usual. • You might find it harder to hear what’s being said when there’s lots of background noise (for example in a busy café, restaurant, or meeting). This can lead to you withdrawing from conversations as you struggle to hear. • You need to concentrate more to understand certain voices (especially soft or low ones). • You find it challenging to hear over the phone. If you have noticed any of these in your day to day life, come and have a Free Hearing Assessment. Call us today on 0800 52 00 546.
So how can I look after my senses for longer? It’s never too late to make changes to the way you live. Here’s some tips to get you started.
The Audiology Service at Taylor Biddle Opticians is led by Helen Barton, who is dedicated to helping people live their lives to the full. She is driven to help each individual make the most of their hearing, to facilitate healthy ageing. “I have a passion for providing excellent customer care and I know that the key to this is good communication and listening skills. Working with The Hearing Care Partnership allows me the time I need to spend with each patient to ensure their care is tailored to them as an individual and to their lifestyle. Keep life in full colour with The Hearing Care Partnership and Taylor Biddle Opticians. Book a FREE hearing health check today on 0800 52 00 546 or visit www.thcp.co.uk/booking
• Stay active: Just 30 minutes of activity a day can help promote mobility and health in later life. What counts as ‘activity’? Anything that raises your heart rate until you feel slightly out of breath. 106

Keep your feet happy! Everyone wants their feet looking great for the summer! However, some people have nail conditions that prevent them from wearing open shoes. Nail Fungus is a common condition that begins as a white or yellow spot under the tip of your toenail, as it goes deeper it may cause your nail to discolour, thicken and crumble on the edge. It may go on to affect the other nails. Having done our research we are pleased to offer a new treatment that will be with us in early May to help any of our patients that are left with a damaged nail.
Wilde Pedique is a wonderful way of improving the look of a thickened, damaged or fungal nail. It is a temporary measure lasting between four weeks to four months offering partial or complete nail reconstruction. The odourless, flexible resin will not discolour
and comes in six shades to tone to the original nail colour. Once applied, it grows with the natural nail and just requires refilling every 4/6 weeks until the nail is grown fully. It is suitable for anyone with nail conditions such as mycosis (fungal nails), trauma, onychauxis (thickened nails) etc. LCN Wilde Pedique can even be used with anti-fungal treatments and after nail surgery once the site is healed. Nails varnish can be applied and removed without damaging the nail and the nail can be cut and filed. Why not book yourself in and get those feet summer ready!

“Cataracts are treated by removing the damaged lens, which is used to focus the light on the retina, and replacing it with a synthetic one. Cataract removal is a safe microsurgical procedure and is usually carried out using a technique called phacoemulsification. The vast majority of patients opt for a local anaesthetic, which means that they are awake for the whole procedure. Some patients choose additional sedation and a rare few choose general anaesthetic, which takes a while longer to recover from.” “Whilst many people are squeamish about eye surgery, it helps to know what is involved. I perform most of my cataract operations under topical anaesthesia by just using special drops to numb the eye – no need for needles or injections. First the pupil is dilated with drops. After anaesthetic drops, we make a small incision in the eye about 2.5mm wide. An ultrasonic probe is used to break up and emulsify the cataract. The soft tissue is then sucked out via the probe. Finally I insert a synthetic lens with a strength customised for the patient using the biometrical measurement of their eye. It is very rewarding to see my cataract patients being able to return to the hobbies and activities they enjoy.”

What does
a hip replacement operation involve? Hip replacement is a very successful operation. Last year in the UK, nearly 90000 hip replacements were undertaken with the average age of the patient being sixty-eight years old. The main reason for having this operation is unrelenting pain around the hip joint (specifically; groin, thigh & buttock). Often patients have had pain for many years, but have coped with it, using painkillers when necessary. However, as time passes the pain becomes more intrusive and starts to affect important aspects of patients’ lives. Patients complain that walking distance is limited, they struggle to walk around a supermarket and pain at night affects their sleeping pattern. The predominant cause of the pain is arthritis, which is a destructive disease of bony joints. In mechanical terms the hip joint is a simple ‘ball and socket’ joint, supported by a surrounding capsule and muscles, which allow it to move. Figures 1 & 2 highlight the differences between a patient who has healthy pain free hips and a patient whose hips are severely worn out and painful respectively. In the healthy hips, there is a gap between the ball and socket which is filled with a spongy lining, but in the arthritic hips the spongy lining has eroded away and the ball and socket have become misshapen causing pain when the joint moves.
Figure 2; Worn out hips.
To relieve the pain, it is necessary to completely replace both the ball and socket. In figure 3, you can see both hips have been replaced. Power instruments are used to re-shape the socket to allow a hemispherical socket to be inserted into the pelvis. The ‘ball’ part of the joint, needs to be fitted onto the top of a metal stem which is inserted into the thigh bone and fixed in the bone with cement.
Figure 3; Both hips have been replaced.
Figure 1; Healthy hips.
The operation takes just over an hour and the average hospital stay is three nights. Anyone for tennis?
and Lynn have also now joined WLTSC, making use of the gym and as well as some Dad-againstDaughter tennis matches! And tennis is just a part of the overall offering at WLTSC.
Liz, who started playing tennis at the age of five, began as a mini red player to move through to now be part of the girls’ squads, entering LTA competitions and also helping as a volunteer with the Saturday squads at the club.
As the weather starts to become more amenable, and the grass court season and Wimbledon looms more into view, the sport of tennis often returns to the forefront of the public consciousness.
Already 2020 has seen the club host a hugely successful Kick Start programme of a week-long schedule of fitness classes and dietary advice, and several successful tennis and squash competitions.
Want to know
more?
“I like keeping active and fun, and interacting with other people, so I really enjoy playing tennis,” says Liz.
And, whilst tennis is played all the year around at WLTSC, both indoors and out, the sport’s popularity does improve when there is a bit of sunshine on the back whilst delivering that pivotal second serve! The beauty of tennis is that it is open to players of all ages and abilities, so whilst WLTSC has a very successful performance programme for young talent, the club plays host to a whole variety of standards. There is also, as seen by the example of 12-year-old Liz
Collinswood, plenty of opportunity to make progress from first picking up a racket upwards.

“I also enjoy volunteering to help the coaches – I want to be a teacher when I am older and this means I can play more tennis and hit with the children to help them get better. “It is a really friendly club with a nice atmosphere where everyone is welcoming and people will always say hello!” Even better for Liz is that her parents Darren

DIY probate -
Is It Worth It?
As part of the HM Courts & Tribunals Service Reform Programme to modernise courts and tribunals, the probate service is becoming a digitally-enabled national service. Moving forward probate will be handled by Courts & Tribunals Service Centres which has led to the closure of all probate subregistries and associated public counters. With the changes implemented to centralise and modernise the way in which Probate is obtained, it may be seen as an opportune time to attempt to deal with a probate application yourself but this isn’t always as straight forward as it may seem. An increasing number of people are risking costly litigation due to the perception that dealing with an estate without professional advice will save money in fees but this is often a false economy leading to significant problems later on.
Potential pitfalls and problems When someone dies they will either pass away testate (leaving a Will) or intestate (without leaving a Will). If there is a Will, the executors named are responsible for dealing with the estate administration and will need to satisfy themselves that the Will is a valid Will. There are a number of factors that can invalidate a Will that people are often unaware of, such as marriage after the execution of a Will or problems with the execution itself. If a Will
is found to be invalid it could have serious implications for the beneficiaries which could cost a significant sum to resolve. If there is no Will then a set of rules called the Intestacy Rules will apply and determine who is able to administer the estate and how the estate is distributed. One role of the executor is to ensure the terms of the Will are carried out correctly. An executor therefore needs to understand the effect of each clause of the Will and any associated implications in respect of tax and inheritance. Even small estates can be complicated and if a Will contains a trust there are strict rules to be followed in administering a trust correctly such as potential registration of the trust at HM Revenue & Customs. Often trusts are included in a Will for protective purposes and if a trust is not set up and administered properly there may be adverse consequences for the beneficiaries. The person authorised to deal with the estate needs to compile information in respect of all the estate assets and liabilities. This time consuming task can often appear daunting but in order for the size of the estate to be determined and declared accurately, it is essential the information obtained is accurate and reported to HM Revenue & Customs using the correct forms. Depending on the value of the estate inheritance tax may be due; if this is the case it should be paid by the end of the sixth month after the person’s death. If any tax due is not paid within this timeframe HM Revenue & Customs will charge interest and personal representatives could
find themselves criticised by the beneficiaries of the estate for any such late payment. The role of a personal representative can often be onerous, time consuming and is an unpaid task. There can be personal liability for any mistakes made which cause a loss to the estate. Special care also needs to be taken if there are any doubts as to the solvency of an estate.
Do I need a Solicitor? Probate remains a complex area of law and not seeking advice is no defence if things go wrong. Professional fees in administering an estate are paid from the estate assets and seeking timely professional advice will give you the peace of mind that the estate has been dealt with correctly therefore protecting you in the future.
Tracey and the specialist Private Client team at Rees Page Solicitors can guide you through the complexities of estate administration and explain the options available to you. We are happy to see you at our office or at your home and will ensure the estate administration is handled correctly and efficiently. Contact Tracey on:.

New bill to shake-up
UK marriage laws The film Marriage Story makes an Oscarwinning drama out of an American divorce. But changes on the way to the law in this country mean real-life separation should not have to be so difficult, says FBC Manby Bowdler family law solicitor Kate Rowley.
The Oscar-winning success of the film Marriage Story – about an American couple going through a protracted divorce – has once again highlighted the difficulties involved in any marriage break down. Actress Laura Dern picked up the best supporting actress Oscar for her role as family lawyer Nora Fanshaw in the Netflixproduced movie about a couple in the throes of separation. The couple – played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson – initially agree to an amicable separation, but after communication breaks down they eventually end up in court with Dern playing the role of a hard-nosed US divorce lawyer trying to get the best-possible financial settlement for her client. It makes for a terrific on-screen drama although the kind of combative court room scenes you see in the film are rare in the UK. And there’s certainly more than a degree of truth in its portrayal of the US legal system. But for couples watching in this country, where moves to no-fault divorce are already under way, the lessons to be drawn are somewhat different.
120
start the divorce process by having to assign blame for the breakdown of a marriage. This is something the Family Law team at FBC Manby Bowdler has been campaigning for a number of years. Blame is almost inevitably built in to the current system. At the moment one spouse must allege adultery, unreasonable behaviour by the other or else wait two years to start divorce proceedings. All three options invariably lead to both sides becoming polarised and focusing on the mistakes of the past rather than how they can move on to a better future. Alongside this, until divorce proceedings are begun, financial issues cannot be resolved with any finality so often people have no choice but to get started immediately. Under the new laws now finally beginning their progress through Parliament, it will be enough for one spouse to say that the marriage has broken down irretrievably without attributing blame to the other’s behaviour. The changes will also stop one partner refusing a divorce if the other one wants one, although defended divorce is very rare. Our belief is that these new laws will make it easier for people to work together at the end of a marriage to reach an outcome which is best for all parties. We know from experience that in most cases there is fault on both sides and starting a divorce by assigning blame is unhelpful.
The Divorce, Dissolution and Separation Bill entered Parliament on 7 January and promises to deliver the biggest shakeup to marriage laws in this country for half a century.
A ‘no-fault’ system will, by its very nature, help focus minds on the outcome of the divorce rather than looking backwards and playing the blame game over just what went wrong and who did what to whom. If children are involved, this can only help the separating parents to work together to care for their children at a difficult time.
The idea of no-fault divorce is that couples will no longer
Lawyers will have a crucial role to play in helping couples reach the
best conclusion to their divorce under the new system. Unlike in the film, we do not focus on winning or losing but on reaching the best outcome for our clients. Often that means compromise and taking a pragmatic view of a situation. Rather than unnecessarily heightening conflict, we usually encourage clients to look at the bigger picture and focus on what really matters. When we no longer have to assign blame, we will be able improve our work to ensure the process is less confrontational, less protracted and less painful. And whilst that may not necessarily make the sort of Oscar-winning drama portrayed in Marriage Story, it has to be a truly positive outcome for people trying to negotiate their own real-life divorce. Kate is experienced in all aspects of family law including, divorce, children issues and ancillary relief. She deals with the preparation of documents, briefing counsel, attending court, attending client meetings and generally assisting the Family Department on all matters. been meeting each member of staff individually, to explore their ambitions for the school and how they can best be realised. I am confident in the drive and determination they have to help every pupil achieve their best. Our pupils are always at the heart of everything that we do. It is the girls and boys who make the College, not the buildings they live and study in. They are the reason we are all here.
Welcoming the new decade of education at Tettenhall College, the Governors are pleased to have appointed a new Headmaster, Mr Chris McAllister, to lead the school. Mr McAllister’s teaching career started at a Senior Secondary school in West Africa, teaching English to local children. Moving back to England, his previous roles include Academic Head of Department at Cheadle Hulme School and varied teaching roles at other national establishments, until his most recent five year tenure, as Deputy Head at Mount St Mary’s College, Sheffield. A letter from Mr McAllister: “As the end of the first half of term
approaches, I am reflecting on the excitement and enthusiasm this New Year has brought. It has been a new beginning in so many ways. The opportunity to meet as many pupils, parents and colleagues as possible, as early as possible, has been a privilege. I count myself very fortunate to have such a dedicated and committed parent body as I have found at the College. This, I witnessed, at the evenings of the Prep School and Senior School Parent Forums. I have always believed that a school is at its best when the links between pupils, teachers and parents are at their strongest. This relationship is at the heart of Tettenhall College. It is part of what forms the College’s unique character. As Headmaster, I am also incredibly fortunate to have a team of colleagues who are so generous with their time and spirit, as well as ambitious for their students. I have

In such picturesque and historic surroundings, our heritage shapes the present, and what we do with the present, carves our future. It has been a privilege to meet every pupil, one to one, and to be working with these fine young people. A school, after all, is its people. The rhythm of the academic calendar is like the seasons of the year. Spring is almost upon us, the days are getting lighter, the pace is quickening towards examinations. From the boarding houses to the playing fields, the classroom to the swimming pool, the sense of purpose is clear in our young learners and their teachers. The goal is to succeed as people, as well as succeeding in their studies. I very much look forward to the opportunity to show you, first hand, all that Tettenhall College has to offer your child at our ‘All School Open Day’ on 10th of March. Please do contact our Admissions department to register your interest and attendance. I look forward to meeting you.”

Wolverhampton’s best kept secret… Prep School Of The Year (Sunday Times) of seven, admits most pupils on a first-come, first-served basis which was another influential factor in the decision to name Newbridge the top Independent Preparatory School Of The year. Alastair McCall, Editor of Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide, said: “Newbridge is an educational gem, a precious find for the 150 children lucky enough to go there.
The Sunday Times Independent Preparatory School Of TheYear 2020. Newbridge Preparatory School was named The Sunday Times Independent Preparatory School Of The Year 2020 – an outstanding achievement for any school – but for a small, nonselective school in Wolverhampton this is remarkable! How lovely that Wolverhampton is placed so highly on the UK’s Educational map. National League Tables The Sunday Times Parent Power article releases the UK’s national league tables. The rankings make use of the most recent public examination results. For senior schools, they include A-level,
GCSE, while junior school rankings draw on SATs taken in Year Six. Newbridge’s performance in the league table bears out the holistic approach of the school; which has finished in the top 20 six times in the past eight years; since the school has been under the leadership of Headmistress Mrs Sarah Fisher. Results from the new Key Stage 2 SATs (standard assessment tests) last year have propelled it to second place this year, its highest ever ranking. Pupils attained a scaled score of 113 for reading (where 100 is the expected level of achievement by the age of 11). For grammar, punctuation and spelling the level was 116, and in maths it was 114. Independent Preparatory School Of The Year 2020 The top scoring schools across the country are reviewed by a panel at The Times. The review includes inspection reports, website and social media. They are looking at the education beyond the academic as that has already been proven by the league tables. The Editor of The Sunday Times selects the winner of the award. Newbridge, which is co-educational until the age
“It manages to pull off the notable feat of achieving outstanding academic results (bettered by just four schools in England across the state and independent sectors) alongside developing the wider interests of its pupils - or allowing the children to have time for a childhood, to use the words of its excellent Headmistress Sarah Fisher.” “The school may have non-selective entry but by the time the girls leave at 11 they are much in demand across the best state and independent schools in the West Midlands. If ever the quality of education on offer here was a “best kept secret”, this award should ensure that is not the case for very much longer.” What an honour for a small school based outside of London – putting Wolverhampton firmly on the educational map of the UK!

BIRCHFIELD SCHOOL Shropshire
Ensuring the Library is the Cultural Hub of the School by Sarah Morris, Headmistress at Birchfield Preparatory School, Albrighton Libraries have a duty to be the cultural hub of the school. Within its walls children are exposed to art, culture and the nature of different perspectives and perceptions through the pages of a humble book. I like to think of the library as a window to the world, where the blinds are never down to withhold an opportunity for a new and inspiring view.
Creating ‘Casual Discovery’ Allowing children to browse in the school library and pick up a title that takes their fancy gives control to the child and allows them to ‘test drive’ a suitable book with no risk. Children often choose based on the attractiveness of the book cover and the library provides them with a low risk ‘change of mind’ opportunity. Allowing safe casual discovery within a structured framework is the key to success and highly motivated young readers. There is a great feeling of satisfaction when I hear
a pupil recommending a book they have ‘discovered’ to another child, or giving a short verbal review.
Building Personal Growth and Responsibility The school library is the perfect breeding ground for a positive personal growth and responsibility. In our school library we run a dual responsibility system, in which our pupils not only run the library at break and lunchtimes, but support our youngest pupils in book selection. For book borrowers too, there is undoubted satisfaction in being seen as trustworthy enough to sign for their own book and ensure its safe and timely return.
Creating a Sanctuary for Well-Being A calm and ordered environment creates the perfect ambience for young readers to learn, explore identity and different perspectives. Classrooms and playgrounds can be noisy and intimidating places where the competition for a voice can be fierce. The library is neutral ground, a sanctuary, and is hugely important as a space where children can feel relaxed and able to be quiet and reflective. The effect this has on well-being cannot be underestimated. If you would like to find out more about Birchfield School’s passion for reading development, please email us at admissions@birchfieldschool.co.uk or call us to arrange a personal visit.

Helping children become more confident Children as young as five should order their own food at a restaurant and tell the doctor how they are feeling a headmaster has urged today. Martin Stott, headmaster at The Old Hall School, said parents needed to encourage more confidence in public settings to help children feel more able and resilient. He said today’s parents were often too quick to speak for their children in situations where it was perfectly acceptable and only right that they should speak for themselves. He added that this enables a child to learn how to communicate their feelings with the knowledge that parents can assist if they get ‘stuck’. The comments come as the school in Wellington prepares to host an open week for families to take a look around the school in June. “Children do best at school and in life generally if they feel happy and supported as they become ever more independent,” he added. “We feel that the children who do best and who settle the quickest are the ones who have been gently encouraged to use their own voice and experienced opportunities to think for themselves and find their own voices”.
“There are certain ways parents can do this to allow a child to grow in confidence and feel able to continue to build their character. Ordering in a restaurant is a really fun way to teach all kinds of skills, from helping with their understanding of reading by looking through the menu together, to asking the serving staff what a particular dish consists of. But also try and let them choose their own food and then order. It’s important to talk to them about making eye contact with waiting staff and being courteous: most children love being able to do this and will even practise what they’re going to say prior to the server arriving to take the order. “I would also encourage parents to let children check in at the GP practice. It is important, even at four or five years old, that they know their full name and date of birth and using that information in a safe setting like this can really encourage confidence. Being able to explain how they feel to a doctor sets off appointments really well and parents can then add in the detail.” The open week will be held from Monday June 1 to Saturday June 6. Families should book an appointment for a visit from June 1 to 5 with an open morning for visitors to drop
in on June 6 with a host of activities for youngsters to try. Mr Stott said parents could also encourage children to order items that needed to be weighed at the shop so they get used to talking about numbers and measurements. Old Hall School builds on this confidence with a number of events for lower school (Reception and KS1) pupils, which encourage confident public speaking. Children in KS1 star in several music and drama performances throughout the year and this term will be taking part in a poetry recital event, where they recite a poem, individually, to a large audience of their peers and parents. “It is one of my favourite events of the year to see the children as young as five perform a four to eight line poem in front of an audience of pupils, staff and parents. It gives them such a confidence boost and afterwards they are even more keen to contribute in class and voice their own opinions. It makes such a difference.” Support with school fees is available through a means-tested Bursary system and the school is anxious to help families who may not be able to manage paying full fees at this time.

Amarjit Cheema OBE
On Thursday 5th of December 2019 Amarjit Cheema, CEO for Perry Hall MultiAcademy Trust attended Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE Award for her services to education presented by Prince Charles. This was an incredible honour for Amarjit who was accompanied to the palace by close family members. On achieving this award, Amarjit said: “I had no idea I had been nominated so didn’t expect it at all. Other people from my past have contacted me to congratulate me and that’s been so overwhelming. People I work with were not surprised, just delighted and I just feel exceptionally honoured and humbled. My family are elated and my son who is 33 and my daughter 30, are just so proud of me and that means a lot”. Amarjit began her career working as a nursery nurse in 1993 and worked her way up to getting her first Headteacher post in 2004. In 2010 she began her role as Headteacher for Perry Hall Primary School which later converted into an Academy in 2013 (The first 132
single primary academy conversion in Wolverhampton). Since then, another five schools have joined the Trust, three in Wolverhampton – Berrybrook Primary School, Dunstall Hill Primary School, Woodthorne Primary School, one in Tamworth – Bird’s Bush Primary School and one in Worcester – Stanley Road Primary School. Amarjit is also an Ofsted Inspector and a National Leader of Education, with a proven history of supporting and improving the outcomes for many schools both within and outside of the Wolverhampton area. The philosophy of Perry Hall Multi-Academy Trust is focused around succeeding together as a team - children, communities, staff and schools. Amarjit embraces the unique qualities of each school and cherishes their identities, always putting the children at the centre of every decision. She gives credit to her team of staff for their commitment, hard work and dedication.
to help each other out. People’s views and ideas are listened to and respected, and there isn’t ever anyone who is left out on their own. We have a cohesive team that works for the needs of all of the schools”. To celebrate her award, Amarjit enjoyed a string of surprise assemblies in every Trust school, where she was treated to a range of touching performances by the children, surprise visitors and video messages which included one from the Mayor, Su Pollard and Wolves player Conor Coady. It has been wonderful for Amarjit to celebrate her achievement directly with the children who are all so thrilled for her.
Amarjit said: “It is the dynamics of the team which make the Trust successful. Everyone pulls together wolverhampton west magazine

a Warm Welcome aWaits at ‘soUth staFFs’ South Staffordshire Golf Club has everything a quality golf club has to offer including a warm welcome, immaculate and challenging course, extensive pro shop, driving range, Clubhouse bar, restaurant and lounge, terrace and facilities together with access to internationally renowned professional golfer Peter Baker.
for the majority of this winter and on main greens when other courses have been closed, this has generated new members for us.
Testimonial “I visited South Staffs and could not believe the tremendous condition of the course, particularly given that my own course was closed due to being waterlogged. Indeed, most other courses in the area have been similarly closed.
Set in 160 acres, the 6587-yard par 71/73 course is maintained to the highest of standards and possesses a series of interesting and challenging holes, including no fewer than six par 4 holes of over 400 yards from the Men’s Medal Tees, 5 par 5’s for the ladies. These contribute to a standard scratch of 72, demanding a mix of skill and imagination to play them.
“I have been so impressed, not only with the state of the course, but with the welcome I have received and I have had no hesitation in transferring my membership to South Staffs. I am so excited to have joined a Club I can be proud of.”
We are very proud of the fact that our course has remained open

exclusive, luxury lodges, introducing the opportunity for guests to stay overnight, giving them an up-close and personal wildlife experience like no other.
West Midland Safari Park has an exciting year planned for its guests, with new arrivals, new exhibits and the introduction of luxury accommodation. To kick-start the year, the Park announced the arrival of seven African lion cubs. After a gestation period of around four months, ten-year-old Scar gave birth to three cubs on 27 August 2019, with the second litter of four cubs following three weeks later on 17 September 2019, for seven-year-old Amber. As with all animals born at the Park in 2019, keepers have chosen names for the cubs beginning with the letter ‘H’. Scar’s cubs have been called Hunter, Hercules and Hernatty (two males and a female), whilst Amber’s are named Harabi, Hodge, Havoc and Hira (three males and a female). The adorable youngsters can now be seen in Realm of the Lions on the four-mile safari drive-through. The lion cubs aren’t the only exciting new development on the safari, as work has started on upgrading the animal facilities as well as improving the overall guest experience. The development is part of a five-year plan and starts with creating brand-new, state-of-the-art housing and outdoor spaces for the African elephants and cheetahs. In addition to the new animal facilities, integrated into the new exhibits will be eight
