from the editor

Happy New Year and welcome to your first edition of 2016.

After much hullabaloo Christmas is now behind us – not a lot now remains of it beyond the customary surplus of everyone’s least favourite Quality Street chocolate, unopened boxes of mince pies and runaway pine needles. You’ve probably had just about enough “family time” to last you until Christmas 2016 and feel fatter than the Turkey you’ve just finished eating. Your New Year’s Resolutions will involve health and beauty. So we have tips on how to break your bad grooming habits; how to address nagging skincare issues with aesthetics clinic, Cosmetique; and plenty of pointers to perk up your hair, from Royston Blythe, Ego and Salon 27. Similarly if you are looking to get fit, the following is sure to be a hit: you can swim, work out in the gym and do everything else you need to keep yourself trim at one of many South Staffordshire leisure centres – and remember, you don’t even have to be a member. But if your motivation is lacking, there is always Chris Jewkes Fitness, where bespoke personal trainers take the lead so that you have no choice but to succeed. Then why not take time-out for a chat with Karen Price from Cambridge Diet? Or get down to brass tacks with a serious financial fitness workout with Midland Independent Financial Services? If this isn’t for you – and you’d rather keep the party going – then there’s more in store. You have our permission to keep eating out at all of the top local eateries featured inside, like Patshull Park Hotel and to read all about the good life at Halfpenny Green Vineyards in our Meet The Boss feature. Our advertisers have more than enough fine food and drink to keep you from resorting to any surviving Christmas leftovers. 04

And they say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so since 2016 is a leap year, there may be no better time for any of you ladies who are intent on abiding by tradition and popping the question. Moreover, love will soon be in the air again as the enigmatic St Valentine reappears once more, even though noone can quite agree on exactly why, as our feature explains. However, one thing that we are all agreed upon is that not everything at this time of the year – or any other – ought to be all about you and no organisation knows this better than Compton Hospice: so a big shout out to them for their fundraising efforts and the sterling work they do within our community

all year, every year. Look out for their big African adventure inside. We have just about everything, including the kitchen sink: kitchens, bathrooms, furniture, curtains and carpets. If you run out of room, Three Pines Building Company will happily build you a new extension – or house – to keep it all in. And keep your eyes peeled also for our Social Scene, for 12 pages of snappy dressers in photographer Nigel from Crescent Imaging’s happy snaps. They’re sure to put a smile on your face.

Geoff See you in April.

The Bespoke Experience

Make it Personal, Make it Special, Make it your own… At T.A. Henn we have been creating bespoke pieces for generations, for special occasions such as engagements, weddings and anniversaries. As well as remodelling once loved jewellery with beautiful content, we are giving the stones the opportunity to be worn again by the next generation.

Seeing a client’s face light up when we present designs of what we can do with their piece of jewellery is very rewarding. Delivering the final item is indeed a special moment for us all.

Jewellery holds a lot of emotion, that’s why we’ll work with you to design a piece reflecting what you are trying to achieve. Perhaps you have a clear vision of what you are after but can’t find it anywhere. You might have seen a style or particular elements you like in a jewellery item which we could draw out to realise your ideal piece of jewellery. Guided by your preferences and combined with our expertise we will come up with suggestions and work closely with you during this process until your unique jewellery item is presented to you. We can work with stones you might already have or we can also source new stones from all over the world, anything is possible...

The local

property market by Nick Berriman

any great changes and the turmoil within the Opposition has had little effect (at least to the property market!). The Stamp Duty changes have had an effect on the top of the market but this is more applicable to London and the South East than to our area where there are very few multi million pound properties. None the less some brackets have benefitted from the removal of the jumps at £250,000 and £500,000 in the old system.

This being the first edition of 2016 the one thing I must say is that I hope you had a happy Christmas and that the New Year will bring you everything you hope for. It is a time for me to reflect on the year that has gone and give some thought to the future. We have found 2015 to be a good year in the property market. August was the best month we have had since Berriman Eaton was born in 2006. The sales over all three branches amounted to almost £20m and the year as a whole was well ahead of our target. However there was some inconsistency with some excellent months and others rather less so. The total sales for our three offices for the year amounted to £150m. This is up by 25% on the previous year and our thanks go to all our clients for their support and to our staff for performing so well. The political year has been somewhat turbulent. The election in May did not turn out as many expected but the market did not seem to be much affected. Traditionally the market is nervous before an election and slows down but that did not seem to happen. Perhaps the strong sales in midsummer reflected a sense of relief that there were not to be 08

Our Rental Department has continued to be busy and it is remarkable how much this sector of the market has mushroomed over the last ten years. It is a result of high property prices which make getting on the property ladder much more difficult and also a change in mobility. People move around much more with their jobs than they did in the past and that can be inhibited if there is a house to be sold before they can move. There is less problem in leaving a rented house or flat. There are some predictions of a rise of about 3% in rents during the year. The year ahead promises to be much of the mixture as before. Our market in this country is always susceptible to outside influences and international financial problems but unless something like that happens we can expect a fairly sound market. There have been many predictions of price rises but they all show our region as being one of the lowest. Rightmove has a five year forecast of an 18.2% rise for the West Midlands which compares with 26.4% for the South East and 12.6% for the North East. It is interesting that the figure for London is only 10.4% but they do start from a high base. Another forecast predicts a five year 20.4% rise for the West Midlands and 4% for 2016. What was it someone said about statistics, statistics and…?!

BE in the Community. Some have spent a day serving in a local soup kitchen, others have served in a charity shop in Bridgnorth and a cake sale in the Tettenhall Office raised funds for the Hope House Children’s Hospice. Several staff spent an afternoon gardening at Penn Hall. The latest was The Great Berriman Eaton Bake Off when our staff and the general public were invited to enter cakes in the shape of a house with a winner then chosen. The funds raised of £236 again went to Hope House. I must not forget Andy Roberts who, in his sane moments, manages our Rental Department but has less sane intentions. He intends to cycle from Vancouver to the Mexican border – just a gentle 2016 miles with 92,000 ft of climbing!! He organised a Charity Dinner, raffle and auction at South Staffs Golf Club for which he sold 140 tickets showing the high regard in which he is held. Almost all the staff from the Tettenhall office were there with contingents from Bridgnorth and Wombourne. The evening raised £6,500 for Hope House and we will keep you informed as to his progress So who says Estate Agents don’t have hearts?

There have been some interesting initiatives by our staff during the last year coming under the heading of wolverhampton west magazine | february 2016

Wolverhampton F i r e p l ac e s & S to v e s If you’re looking to find the perfect fireplace or stove for your home this winter then pay a visit to Wolverhampton Fireplaces & Stoves Ltd.

Company Director, Steve Field explains: “We opened our doors at Chapel Ash a decade ago on the 27th December 2005, since then we’ve increased our turnover year on year despite economic downturn and recession.”

The family-run company, that’s based in Chapel Ash, has just celebrated its 10th year in business. Known for their vast selection of fireplaces and stoves - as well as excellent customer service - it’s no surprise that the company has gone from strength to strength over the years.

The team attributes their ongoing success to their commitment to excellent customer service. “We use our many years of experience in the industry to guide and advise our customers so that they can find the fireplace or stove that’s perfect for them.” And Steve does indeed have vast industry experience: “I started in business back in 1982 when I set up my first fireplace showroom in Walsall Wood. After working at the showroom with my family for many years, I left to open our Stafford branch in 1999.” The Stafford business grew rapidly and Steve

was soon taking on extra staff and expanding his showroom. “The company continued to be successful over the years and really began to flourish when my son, Richard, joined in 2001 after gaining great results in his A-Levels.” Richard wanted to grow the company - by opening another branch - and was instrumental in expanding their range to include multi-fuel stoves. The Stafford showroom now boasts over 100 live displays, as well as solid fuel stoves. “After a few years at Stafford we decided to expand and opened our sister showroom in Chapel Ash.” Both showrooms have proved to be extremely successful and business has never been better: “We’re expecting 2016 to be a record year for both branches.” To celebrate the company’s ongoing success and to mark Wolverhampton branch’s 10th birthday, the team are running special offers across the whole range in store.

SHOULD YOU BORROW MONEY

IN YOUR RETIREMENT? From reading my articles in this and other magazines over the last twelve months you will be aware that there have been more changes of consequence in and around pensions over the last year than in the previous twenty put together.

The Budget of 2014, the so called “Lamborghini Budget”, changed retirement completely and for many retirement is now funded entirely differently. For some over 55’s pensions became just another asset that could be accessed whenever. The other major asset held by many was their house and in the same way a proportion of people

wanted to access the money they had tied up in this asset. Public opinion concerning pensions and borrowing into retirement has also changed.

According to recent research carried out by the company More2Life, today 2 out of 3 people over 55 want to see lenders launch special deals for retired couples. Nearly 2/3rds of those over 55 would welcome the ability to borrow in retirement if they needed to. There are further statistics which provide food for thought:28% of all UK households are over the age of 55. There are 4.7 million households in the UK owned by over 65’s 57% of over 55’s have applied for credit in the last 2 years. And yet a considerable number of these are excluded from mainstream lending simply by virtue of their age. For many Equity Release was a” nono” but nowadays many are starting to

14

wolverhampton west magazine | february 2016

look upon it in a new light with the advent of flexible lending products for those over 55 in or approaching retirement. Through Equity Release over 55’s now have access to a large range of products to meet a variety of needs. People may want to borrow money into retirement for a number of reasons, in many instances more than one reason such as: 1. to repay existing unsecured debt 2. to pay off an interest only mortgage 3. to fund home improvements 4. to help boost income in retirement 5. to fund a once in a lifetime holiday There are 2 types of Equity Release and these are as follows:

from an adviser with the relevant qualifications and experience. Midland Independent Financial Services has been awarded Chartered status by the Chartered Insurance Institute which is the highest accolade that can be awarded to a Financial Services Company and John Webb, Managing Director, is a Fellow of The Personal Finance Society which is the highest award to an individual. Midland Independent is directly authorised by The Financial Conduct Authority and is fully authorised to advise on lifetime mortgages. This is a lifetime mortgage to understand the features and risks please ask for a personalised illustration.

Home Reversion Plans With a home reversion plan you transfer a pre-determined amount of equity to the company and pay in essence a peppercorn rent. Once transferred the property no longer belongs to you and on your death the property is owned by the company.

Lifetime Mortgages A Lifetime Mortgage is where a mortgage is secured on your property provided it is your main residence. Ownership is retained by you and you can choose to make repayments to cover the interest if you wish or simply roll up the interest. The percentage loan to value will depend on the age of the borrower and the loan is repaid when the borrower dies or goes into long term care. The process is now quite simple but before taking any action it is vital that four vital rules are followed: Firstly, always use any savings/ investments before considering Equity Release (always retain an emergency fund). Secondly, never borrow any more than is required. Thirdly, always discuss the matter with a relative or close friend. Finally, and most importantly, always seek professional advice www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Words on Wightwick By Rob Taylor

Wightwick is a tiny little place annexed to Tettenhall that is for many locals merely a place through which one must travel on route to somewhere else. This must be most annoyingly to residents I’m sure, since paramount in the minds of almost every one of those travellers is finding the most expedient way from A to B, and in particular on this morning. Because today the usual school-run SUVs and commuter wagons trundling up through the many spindly pinch-points on Wightwick Bank, heading for Yew Tree Lane and ultimately the A41, are joined by a great hulking HGV, driven by a dishevelled, unkempt trucker.

of Canadian MP Henry Nicholas Paint. For those of you fond of curious linguistic links to words like ‘Mander’ and ‘Paint’, this family is the same crew who lend their name to Manders Paint and Inks and Wolverhampton’s Mander Shopping Centre.

minute by minute, said trucker is emboldened still further and now begins to pick up speed in his descent down the hill. Now the scene is more Indiana Jones racing to avoid the giant boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark, as the wrecking ball gathers momentum before finally reaching the Mermaid Pub at the bottom. This trucker, like so many before him, was oblivious to the finery of Grade I-listed Wightwick Manor, which sits, in semi-obscurity, just off from the roadside. Inside the splendid Victorian manor house there are towering examples of furniture and furnishings belonging to the Arts and Craft movement. In particular much William Morris wallpaper and Pre-Raphaelite art is among the most prized possessions. Wightwick Manor was built by Theodore Mander, a prominent 19th Century industrialist, and his wife Flora, daughter

Sir Geoffrey Le Mesurier Mander was the Liberal MP for Wolverhampton East and the first of the Mander family to sit in the House of Commons. The house is now in the hands of the National Trust. An accent on business and enterprise – as the Mander family would have liked – is today provided by Wightwick Hall School on Tinacre Hill. The popular school is housed inside an old stately home and benefits from extensive landscaped gardens. Outside the grounds and away from the school the running theme of picturesque idyll set on the fringe of the Wolverhampton conurbation continues with much of Wightwick’s small residential area commanding high property values. And since this area was first named after the wealthy, prominent land-owning de Wightwick family, I guess some things never change - least of all the inconsiderate driving habits of so many motorists up and down Wightwick Bank.

Having the countenance of someone who has been on the road too long to care about the Highway Code and plainly lacking the literacy skills to discern signage such as ‘Road unsuitable for HGVs’, every one of the unfortunate few drivers for and aft of me are instinctively deferential to his superior mass and start crawling into every available crevice to make his journey more comfortable. Upon seeing this miracle taking place, which I can liken only to Moses parting the Red Sea, and his power growing 16

Art Gallery Exhibition The exhibition gives both professional and amateur members a chance to showcase new work and is a unique opportunity for the visiting public to purchase original works of art. Throughout the exhibition, various artists will demonstrate the diverse range of styles and subject matter which has become the signature of this established society. Find out more about the society and how you can become a member by visiting their website at www.wsa-artists.com

In keeping with a longstanding tradition since it was first formed 1885, The Wolverhampton Society of Artists is proud to present their latest collection of work in their new biennial exhibition at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. The exhibition was opened on October 24th by Jonnie Turpie, High Sherriff of the West Midlands, who has had a keen interest in fine art since his early research role in the Fine Art Department of Wolverhampton Polytechnic.

Staff choice went to Mark Whitehouse for ‘Into the Mystic’. Following the success of the society’s current exhibition at Nuneaton, the society was pleased to welcome a group of new Gurkha recruits to their opening as part of their Introduction to Western Culture tour. The WSA forged a friendship with the Gurkha Regiment through the presentation of framed photographs of Nepal taken prior to the devastating earthquake earlier this year.

The society also has a Facebook page. The exhibition will be open until Saturday 27th February 2016.

M a r a t h o n cheque presentation 2015 and abilities and it was encouraging to see so many set off in all their different events. This year the organisers added a Walk in the Park to the list of events. Kindly sponsored by Call Print the walk attracted almost 100 participants. An encouraging start and it is hoped that it will “grow” next year.

On Monday 7th December the organisers of the 18th Carver Wolverhampton Marathon joined together with the sponsors and charity recipients at the Mayors Parlour for the finale of the events, the presentation of the cheques to the chosen charities for 2015. £18.750.00 was shared between Compton Hospice, Samaritans Wolverhampton , Beacon Centre for the Blind and the Mayoral Charity Fund.

Supplies who have always given the Marathon Events their full backing, both financially and with volunteer helpers: Marston’s plc who sponsor The Banks’s 10K and Cousins Furniture who sponsor the 20K cycle ride. Without this sponsorship and support it would be hard to stage such a large event in our city. There are also many other organisations who support the events. A big thank you to you all. The success of the events relies heavily on such committed sponsorship and support. The Marathon events are all about encouraging activity for all ages

The atmosphere in West Park was enhanced by our Media Sponsors Signal 107. Creating the perfeCt

period bathroom

There’s nothing like a recommendation from a family member who is thoroughly satisfied, so when Amanda and Robert were looking for a new bathroom, they listened to Amanda’s brother, who had been delighted with the products and service he’d received a while back.

They were looking to remove a small shower room, and turn it into a study off their bedroom and as they really wanted the use of a bath, a bedroom would become the bathroom. They knew this would necessitate swapping rooms around upstairs, but felt this was a sacrifice worth making. After a visit to Roman Bathrooms, and chatting to Caroline, plans were drawn up, and a survey undertaken. “We had a bedroom with a frosted window,” says Amanda. “I reckon it had once been used as a bathroom, so it made sense to re-locate things there. But first the company had to check that the joists were suitable, and the existing outflow feasible to put a bathroom in.” Plans were given the go-ahead, the bathroom design finalised, and the products then chosen. The couple live in an Arts &

Crafts house, so were keen to incorporate as many period features and ‘looks’ as possible. Work ran exactly according to proposed timings, and was performed in stages, and just a few weeks later, the couple had their new bathroom. “We’re delighted,” says Amanda. “It’s even better than we’d imagined. The shower is so powerful, and the room looks beautiful. Caroline and her team were hugely knowledgeable and helpful – my brother’s recommendation was spot on!”

RECIPE

Makes 12-16 slices By Michael Peter Whitehurst

WINTER COMFORTING CARROT CAKE INGREDIENTS FOR THE SPONGE • 300ml of olive oil • 300g of organic wholemeal self raising flour • 300g of soft dark brown sugar • 4 medium free range eggs • 2 tsp of baking powder • 1 tsp of ground ginger • 1 tsp of ground cinnamon • 1/2 tsp of ground star anise • 50g of grated walnuts • 50g of grated stem ginger • 100g of golden raisins soaked in whisky • 1 tsp of vanilla extract • 1/2 tsp of Valencian orange extract • 1 pinch of Maldon sea salt • 300g of carrots peeled FOR THE BUTTERCREAM • 500g of icing sugar • 250g of softened unsalted butter • 1 tsp of ground mace • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract • 50g of chopped dried apricots • 50g of roasted walnut halves and hazelnuts • 1 tbsp of toasted pumpkin seeds • Icing sugar EQUIPMENT • 1 x 9” cake tin greased and lined with parchment paper • Magi mix with grating attachment large or small it’s up to you • Food mixer with paddle attachment / K beater • Spatula Method 1. Pre heat the oven to 175ªc and now make the batter. 2. Beat together the oil, salt and sugar on high speed until its lightens in colour a little then add in the flour, baking powder, vanilla, orange extract, spices and eggs and beat until smooth. Now using a magimix or similar food processor or just a hand held grater,

grate the walnuts, stem ginger and carrots and then fold into the cake batter with the whisky soaked raisins and a dash of the whisky. Pour into your 9” greased and lined tin - I use Alan Silverwood Anodised tins as they distribute the heat more evenly when baking. (Wash by hand, don’t put them in the dishwasher). 3. Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for about an hour then allow to cool in the tin for a while until turning out onto a cooling rack. Whilst this is cooling you can make your butter cream. 4. Using the magi mix, clean the bowl out and fit the blade attachment. Pour in the icing sugar and butter and blitz until the mix comes together as a smooth paste, add in a little vanilla and add half of the ground mace. Now that the sponge has cooled completely slice across the middle with a cake wire or a long pastry knife. I find it easier to chill the sponge first before cutting so it’s a little less crumbly. Now spread the butter cream across the middle of the cake, as much as you like but you do need to save some for the outside. I like to completely cover my cake with buttercream on the outside but that’s up to you. Top with the chopped dried apricots, roasted nuts and seeds then dust with a little of the ground mace and icing sugar. Serving suggestion Serve this with an espresso or whatever your favourite hot beverage is.

The annual presentation celebrates the very best of junior golf talent in the West Midlands and this year has been no exception. Over 200 of the region's finest junior golfers attended the event from ages 4 up to 17. In total over 600 guests (including family members) saw boys and girls receive awards for their achievements throughout the 2015 golfing season. Junior Captain with Future Star Golfers

Trophy was awarded to Luke Blocksidge. Dave Allen was instrumental with his work with the Staffordshire Junior Golf Development Pathway, and with the sad passing of Dave last year, the award was presented by his wife Mary. Luke is proud to have reduced his CONGU handicap from 15 to 6 in the last 12 months, has represented his County in under 16's, has captained the under 14's and won numerous events around the region. All this at the tender age of 12 years old. One of the 3 Hammers Academy's finest junior players Harvey Roberts also attended the event to be presented with his achievement award by Golf Academy Director Rob Bluck after a magnificent 2015 golfing season. 3 Hammers Golf Academy also presented the Junior Captain title for the first time to Will Dunn, who was delighted to be presented with his Captain's colours by 3 Hammers Golf Manager, Nick Forbes. Will has been at 3 Hammers Golf Academy for 10 years and has worked his way up through the ranks and has now secured his County place. He has enjoyed numerous victories over the past 12 months including finishing runner up in Staffordshire 2015 Order of Merit.

around Wolverhampton and Stafford districts. Many of the children collecting awards have come from our schools initiatives. I can't thank the coaches enough for all the hard work, dedication and professionalism that they have showed to get the kids into golf. Also a big thank you goes to the complex for making it possible with the exceptional facilities and the continued investment that makes it possible for us to take the academy to the next level and grow the game which comes from grass roots. Juniors really are the future of the game and I see it as our responsibility to educate, challenge, make it fun and addictive to ensure that they stay in the game and make the right choices and to further their ambitions. At 3 Hammers we are the epicentre for junior County Golf, we are running both girls and boys development pathways from ages 8 - 18. We coach around 300 children on a weekly basis at the Wolverhampton site and regularly deliver golf taster sessions in local schools. We are really looking forward to the future as the foundations are well and truly in place and we have now started to build on what promises to be a very solid junior development pathway." Call 3 Hammers Golf Reception on 01902 790428 for details on all junior golf classes.

Golf Academy Director Rob Bluck said "It was an overwhelming experience to see so many youngsters celebrating their complex. Over the past year we have delivered taster sessions to over 5,000 children in schools wolverhampton west magazine | february 2016

New Year’s

Res o l u t i o n s Did you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to January 1st. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 10 30

people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong: Write it down. Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people. Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan - A goal isn’t enough; you need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more? How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike?

Break your goal into smaller ones - So you want to lose two stone by your summer holiday. How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight? Remind yourself why you’re doing it - Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable - There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or try karate. Keep track of your progress Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way - Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon - We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again. Good luck!

How to Save

Thousands on a New Kitchen Our kitchens have changed over time. Drawers have got wider, appliances are smarter and you can now make a cup of tea straight from the tap. But, despite years of innovation, what we do in the kitchen has remained a constant. We still need sinks and worktops. We rely on ovens to heat and fridges to keep everything fresh. So, while features improve and benefits increase, the layout of our kitchens remain the same. And it's the 'work triangle' we have to thank

for that. Any kitchen designer worth their salt will abide by this decadesold industry standard: that the three most important work stations in a kitchen – the sink, the oven and the fridge – should be positioned a set distance from each other. All of which raises a question most kitchen companies would prefer we didn't ask: if the layout of our kitchens are just as they should be, then why bother replacing the units? But not every kitchen company is the same. As the UK’s largest franchised kitchen makeover company, Dream Doors can ‘breathe new life into old kitchens’ and transform any tired old kitchen, giving an amazing transformation without the cost and inconvenience of a complete replacement kitchen. Dream Doors specialises in kitchen makeovers which, typically, involve swapping the doors and drawer fronts with made-to-measure replacements, then adding new work surfaces, a sink and taps. Crucially, though, the existing base and wall units remain untouched. Dream Doors also offer a vast range of appliances as well as

Leap Year It is to Julius Ceasar that we owe the existence of the Leap Year.

He it was who, in 46BC, reformed the old Roman calendar adding one extra day every fourth year to take account of the fact that the Earth took 365 days and 6 hours to circle the sun. This was done by doubling the sixth day before the Calends of March. This year was called bisextile. As every schoolboy (and girl) probably knows, you can determine if a year is a Leap Year by dividing it by four. However, things are not as simple as that.In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII further adjusted the calendar taking into account the fact that even Caesar’s calculations were somewhat out. By Gregory’s calculations, years divisible by 100 did not qualify, so ‘century leap years’ were disregarded, which is why, although 1896 was a leap year, 1900 was not. However the plot thickens. Even this adjustment was insufficient to bring the calendar accurately into line with the facts of astronomy. Gregory further declared that ‘century leap years’ that were divisible by 400 could qualify for the extra day. Hence the year 2000, beginning of the new millennium,

38

was a leap year. This rule means that only comparatively few ‘new century years’ can be leap years - after 2000, the next one will not occur until the year 2400 .

This adjustment of the calendar was not universally accepted by the then civilised world. Britain in fact refused to countenance it until 1752, by which time the error had mounted to eleven whole days. At a stroke, the 3rd September 1752 became the 14th September, and caused riots amongst the populace convinced they had had their lives commensurately shortened. There was even a popular song written called, “Give us back our eleven days” Russia was even more resistant and didn’t accept the change until the October revolution of 1917. The name ‘Leap Year’ is thought to have derived from the fact that the intercalary (extra) day, called ‘bisextus’ or ‘Leap Day’ that is added to the month (February), is not simply pushed on one day of the week as in other years, but leaps over one day additional!

One tradition that has endured for many hundreds of years

and which is still occasionally practised is that governing marriage proposals. It has long been permitted for the lady to ‘pop the question’ on February 29th. There are stipulations however. Traditionally she should wear a red flannel petticoat to advertise what she has in mind and should carry an open fan. The man of course, does not have to accept but, if he refuses, he has traditionally been expected to pay over a forfeit. This varies depending on the part of the country involved and can range from £10 to a pair of fine, white kid gloves. Some authorities maintain that promises made on Leap Day must be kept if the maker of the promise doesn’t wish to fall victim to something extremely nasty before the next Leap Day. However, secrets told on this day need not be kept - unless of course, a promise is involved. You have been warned!

There have been many odd beliefs and customs built around Leap Years. February 29th is said to be a very bad day on which to send love letters. However, quarrels made up and apologies offered on this day should tie the contenders as friends for life.

Codsall Community Arts FestivaL

Music News for 2016

Lovers of classical music will be delighted by two of the events on offer at Codsall Community Arts Festival in March 2016. International pianist, Angela Hewitt will be thrilling the audience with her renowned interpretation of Bach’s Goldberg Variations but equally exciting is the Klee Quartet. This group of young and vibrant string musicians trained at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo, undertook further chamber music studies at the Hochschule für Musik and are now are now studying at Birmingham Conservatoire under the direction of Professor Oliver Wille. However, beside the classical repertoire there is an exciting range of other musical evenings for your entertainment. Foden’s Brass Band reminds us of why the brass band sound is so well loved

by the British while The Phoenix Jazzmen will perform tunes from the great jazz repertoire of the likes of Louis Armstrong, Kenny Ball and Chris Barber. On a rather quirky note, Houghton Weavers have been entertaining folk for over 40 years with their unique blend of popular folk music, humour and audience participation. Based in the North West, much of their English Folk music is sung in a Lancashire dialect.

next few weeks and tickets will be on sale from February. Please visit our website to find out more. www.codsallartsfestival.org.uk Find us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/CodsallArts Contact The Arts Festival on: 07852 200421

To end the Festival, Gala Evening is something really special. Drawing on inspiration from Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, Down for the Count Swing Orchestra promise an energetic performance which is packed with joie de vivre from the first song to the last. Trinity Musical Theatre Company For a local amateur theatre company, turning 80 is surely a cause for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with an update of image and direction? That’s exactly what we at Trinity are doing in 2016 for our 80th birthday. Trinity began life on the Compton Road at Trinity Methodist Church and was known as Trinity Operatic Society, performing the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan to hundreds of loyal devotees, at venues such as the Wulfrun Hall, regularly selling out shows like ‘HMS Pinafore’. Over the years dwindling audience numbers and increased production costs meant that venues were downsized, and funds for performing such shows became stretched. Trinity recognised that in order for the society to survive changes had to be made. To that end we have changed the name to Trinity Musical Theatre Company, a name that reflects the diversity of the shows that we hope to bring to wider audiences from now on. Whilst it is not the end for G&S, our next big production is to be the exciting musical ‘The 44

Witches of Eastwick’, which is based on the film of the same name and which we will be performing at The Mill theatre in Sedgley from November 1st to the 5th 2016. Rehearsals start in January and we are looking for dancers, actors and chorus members to join our strong production team. We rehearse at St Columba’s church hall in Finchfield on a Tuesday, and Thursdays for principals. Anyone over the age of 16 is invited to come and audition for us in 2016. For further information contact Chris on 07816 040614. We can also be found on Facebook and on Twitter @TrinityMTC. If you love musical theatre why don’t you look us up? We are excited about our future and hope you will be too.

celebrate a 20 year partnership Wolverhampton roots, and as longstanding supporters of Wolves we’re absolutely thrilled to be celebrating such a milestone anniversary.

“Like the club, we place a great emphasis on supporting our local community and raising awareness of health and wellbeing in the region, and we very much look forward to continuing this good work with the help of the Community Trust in the months and years ahead.”

Paycare and Wolves Community Trust celebrate a new partnership deal which extends their relationship to 20 years. Paycare, Wolverhampton-based Health Care plan providers, has been supporting Wolves disabled supporters and the club’s wider community work since 1998 and has announced a new 3 year deal. Will Clowes, General Manager of Wolves Community Trust said "I am delighted that we’re here today announcing the continuation of our longest standing partnership. The support that we’ve received from Paycare since 1997 has benefitted many, many people. Our supporters enjoy access to dedicated facilities at our home games and our wider community continues to benefit from our wide ranging engagement activities, thanks to the investment from Paycare". One lucky winner can win two tickets to see INTO THE HOODS: REMIXED on Thursday 25th February at 7.30pm. Into the Hoods: Remixed is the newly revamped version of the original award-winning production that stormed the West End in 2008. Under the direction of Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, the much-loved show returns to the stage with all the wit and charm of the original, updated for 2015 with new choreography, a remixed soundtrack and fresh designs. Set in the ‘Ruff Endz Estate’, the story follows two lost school children who have been tasked to find an iPhone as white as

milk, trainers as pure as gold, a hoodie as red as blood and some weave as yellow as corn. Along the way, they meet DJ Spinderella, aspiring singer Lil Red, vivacious rapper Rap-on-Zel, budding music producer Jaxx and embark upon a storybook adventure into the heart of a pulsating community. Co-produced with Sadler’s Wells Theatre, co-commissioned by Curve, Leicester, and supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. “The massively talented ZooNation are genuinely mesmerising. 4K TV 4K TV, also known as Ultra HD or UHD, is the next evolution in television picture quality. With a picture composed of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels - more than 8 million in total - it has four times the amount of HD (high definition) sets.

More pixels mean greater image clarity, finer detail, better texture and improved colour resolution. The net result is images that look incredibly lifelike and so detailed that at times they feel almost 3D – without the need for funny glasses! The first wave of 4K TVs were large – very large – with 84 inch panels and £20k price tags to match. Prices have now dropped along with screen size, and you can buy entry models for under £1,000 from all the big brands such as Samsung, Panasonic, LG and Sony. You can also pay many thousands of pounds for monster sets! Generally 4K TV screens are at least 40 inches. Some say you shouldn’t view on anything less than 55 inches. This is because the advantages of pixel-dense display diminish as the screen size shrinks. Big really is better! Similarly 4K TV is best viewed close up (ideally at a distance 1.5 x screen height), though practically most homes cannot accommodate viewing from closer than 2-3 metres. The technology for crystal-clear viewing may be with us, but currently there are no 4K TV channels being broadcast. The main source of 4K content is the internet, from sites such as Netflix, YouTube and Amazon Prime Instant Video,

and to successfully stream you would need a consistent broadband speed of at least 15Mbps. That said, UHD TVs do a remarkable job of upscaling HD and standard definition pictures to 4K pixel count, so ‘everyday’ viewing such as Freeview HD TV, Blu-ray movies and DVDs can be boosted to near 4K picture quality. However be warned that some models are better at doing this than others. 4K technology is still a work in progres. In future, it may also extend to higher frame rates (HFR), greater contrast and wider colour spectrum. The BBC has plans to offer 4K programming by 2016 but only in a limited form and although BT and Sky are rumoured to have plans, nothing has been finalised. It will be 2-3 years until most video content becomes available. So, if you want the absolute best that TV has to offer and don’t mind waiting to enjoy the full benefits of your 4K TV, then go ahead and buy now. But purchase from a top tier manufacturer for the best chance of futureproofing your set and also make sure that you buy a model with two HDMI 2.0 ports.

The Rotary Club of Wolverhampton BEM presentation On 5th January there was a very special meeting at which Rotarian Jerry Hobbs was presented with the British Empire Medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire Sir Algernon Heber Percy. The BEM is awarded for meritorious civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown. In Jerry’s case it was for very many years dedicated service to Compton Hospice, including major fundraising, and serving for seven years as Vice Chairman. He was one of several club members who were at the first meeting of the Committee set up in February 1979 to investigate the possibility of starting a Hospice and with only a short break has been involved ever since. The Citation also referred to his extensive work on behalf of Help for Heroes where he was the original co-ordinator for the introduction of Help for Heroes in the West Midlands and Staffordshire. our

Rotary Club made a donation of £1,000 which was the first from any Rotary Club in the world. Jerry’s contribution and dedication to this organisation has been invaluable. In addition to the Lord Lieutenant we were also joined by the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress together with the Commanding Officer of Royal Air Force Cosford, Group Captain Mark Hunt. The remainder of the 140 present were members of our club and very many individuals and representatives of organisations with which Jerry has been involved with over the years in his service and fund raising. After the formal part of the evening Jerry had produced an entertainment entitled Gong for a Song which included narration, singing, a rolling background on a large screen of relevant photographs and an under score of music. The production was enhanced by singing by several artists who had been involved with Jerry in

some of the musical productions for which he is well known. Linden House was an excellent venue and provided a first class meal which the Lord Lieutenant was heard to describe as a very, very good dinner. In all a splendid evening to celebrate a richly deserved honour to a remarkable man.

City Rotarians give support to flood victims The Rotary Club of Wolverhampton and its members have responded both collectively and individually to the flooding crisis which has overwhelmed northern counties. Every year club members raise in the region of £50,000 for distribution to wherever there is need. Part of the amount raised is set aside each year as a contingency, in order to be able to respond immediately to the natural disasters which inevitably arise around the world. Says Club President Roger Fellows “It is very unusual to be faced with a home-grown disaster here on our own shores and members

were very concerned that we should act quickly to try to help”.

wanted to add personally to the amount donated from club funds”.

At a club meeting before Christmas, members voted that £5,000 should be drawn from club funds to be sent off immediately in response to the desperate situation.

A number of Rotarians had received notification that the Winter Fuel Allowance would shortly be credited to their bank accounts. This quickly lead to a conclusion that the need for extra heating would be far greater in recovering from the flooding, than it would here in Wolverhampton.

Discussions with Rotary clubs in the Carlisle area identified a special fund, ring-fenced for flood relief and administered by the Rotary Clubs of Cumbria, working in close conjunction with two Community Trusts. President Roger continues “Members were so deeply affected by the scenes of devastation from the Carlisle area, and the knowledge that many of those affected were without insurance cover, that some decided that they

Members pledged to donate some or all of their allowance to the flood relief fund managed by Cumbria Rotary Clubs, and a further sum of £3,100 will be on its way to help with the enormous task which will lie ahead over the coming months. Security Alert!

How can we protect ourselves against fraud? These days we are required to use so many PINS and passwords that many people choose something simple to remember, such as their child’s name or date of birth. Fraudsters know this and in their hands such information becomes a valuable tool. But how do they get hold of such information? Careless talk How many of us publish personal details on Facebook and other networking sites? We announce our favourite books, films; the names of our children and our pets for all to see. Can you keep a secret? In a research study carried out for the Infosecurity Europe trade show, four out of five subjects questioned happily handed over the user name and password for their work PC to those carrying out the research. More surprising, were many of those who would not initially reveal their passwords did so after being bribed with chocolate! Gone Phishing NEVER click on links in unsolicited emails purporting to be from your bank or building society. If in doubt phone them first. Proper Passwords The best passwords are a completely random mix of characters and letters.

Fraudsters have a hard time guessing them, even when they use dedicated software. Security experts suggest that we use a separate password for each account we possess. But given that most of us have trouble remembering two or three passwords, you can see the problem with this approach. Fortunately, there are password managers available for under £30 which remember your various passwords and PINS but encrypt them to make them useless to anyone else. If you want the very latest in security technology, you can purchase a fingerprint reader for around £100 or an iris scanner for under £300. Most importantly, make sure you keep your PC’s security software updated. And beware people with clipboards offering chocolate!

Fair trade Fo r t n i g h t farmer organisations or plantations that meet Fairtrade social, economic and environmental standards. These standards include protection of workers’ rights and the environment, payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in schools, transport, health care, sanitation, an improved environment and better business equipment and practices.

What did you have for breakfast this morning? Maybe you enjoyed coffee from Kenya, bananas from Colombia, cocoa from Côte d’Ivoire, tea from India, sugar from Malawi or juice from Brazilian oranges.

There are over 4,500 Fairtrade products available in the UK: from coffee, tea and chocolate to beauty products, flowers and gold. One in three bananas bought is Fairtrade, and British consumers choosing Fairtrade sugar sent more than £5 million in Fairtrade premium back to sugar cane smallholders last year. Choosing to buy food with the FAIRTRADE Mark really does make a huge difference to thousands of farmers, workers and their families. From 29 February until 13 March 2016 is Fairtrade Fortnight, during which ordinary people like you and me are encouraged to inspire a

multitude of Fairtrade breakfasts in our communities – and wake others up to the challenges facing farmers and workers. There are three simple steps to get involved: • Organise your own Big Fairtrade Breakfast • Inspire others to host a breakfast (for example, in a school, workplace, town hall or individuals at home)

• Register your breakfast on the Big Fairtrade Breakfast totaliser to make sure it gets counted. You can find everything you need at fairtrade.org.uk/breakfast. No one person can do everything to tackle the injustices that exist in the world, but harnessing the power of a Fairtrade breakfast is something we can all do. So, sit down for breakfast and stand up for farmers! By Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Millions of farmers and workers in developing countries work hard every day to grow the food we take for granted, but ironically they don’t always earn enough to feed their own families. In other words, they do not have food security. Fairtrade is about changing that. Its aim is to secure better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. By being paid a fair price, they can have more control over their lives and less worry about how they will feed their families. Fairtrade means many farmers and workers are able to fulfil a basic human need – to put enough food on the table for the people they care about, all year round. When you buy products with the FAIRTRADE Mark, it means that the Fairtrade ingredients they contain have been produced by small-scale 60

Lealans Time to look forward atGarden

to the coming year Centre

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

As we leave Christmas behind and begin a new year it’s time to get the catalogues out and start to plan for the coming season. Many of the seed companies are highlighting different ranges of vegetables for 2016. Thompson and Morgan have a great range of pepper and chilli seeds available in garden centres. Mr Fothergills have a range of tomatoes – from the small vine type to the large beefsteak. One variety that won’t be available for the foreseeable future is the Kelsea Onion, unfortunately a hail storm when the plants where in flower ruined the crop. Seed Potatoes arrive in January; we stock over 45 different varieties. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow

shoots to form), egg trays are ideal for this, place them in a light, cool and frost free environment. Remember you can start seed potatoes growing in pots inside as early as you like, so long as they are protected from any frosts we may have.

Also put a grease band around the trunk of the tree, this can be kept on all year round to catch any pests climbing up the tree.

If the weathers fine and frost free, get out into the garden to burn off those extra pounds gained over Christmas by finishing any clearing up jobs that weren’t done at the end of 2015, especially tidying up leaves and debris. This will help to prevent disease from spreading and removes hiding places for slugs and snails.

Many people like to start something off early in the greenhouse, so why not try sowing some sweet pea seeds in a cool environment. Use a seed compost and sow them into peat pots, 2 to 3 seeds per pot. When they’re ready for planting out the roots will have grown through the pot and it’s then very easy to just pop the plant into the ground or a container.

Winter wash can be used on a mild day on fruit trees, make sure it’s done before the buds start to burst, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees.

If we do get snow in the coming weeks, pop along to the garden centre and pick up sledges, snow shovels and rock salt – all essential in the worst of the winter weather.

GARDEN DESIGN INSPIRATION for 2016 If you are thinking of getting your garden professionally designed this spring, what should you be looking out for when choosing a landscape company? We ask Steve Tonks, General Manager at the award-winning Boningale Garden Creations for his advice and tips. What makes a good garden designer? A good garden designer has to be in tune with the customer – and gaining trust is absolutely vital. This means spending hours with you to ascertain exactly how you want to use the garden and what it is you want to achieve. At this initial stage, they will go through existing features, talk about preferred

styles, and, crucially, budget. It’s only when those details are sorted that the design can be created. What should people look for if they want to use a garden design company? Do some digging! Before signing on the dotted line, ask to speak to previous customers and check to see if it is a member of the Association of Professional Landscapers – this will give you added assurance of quality and a guarantee of service. Will they help us choose the best hard landscaping materials? Materials are one of the most important components in the design (and budget) and with so many options, from slate, block paving and brick to concrete and gravel – not forgetting natural materials like hedging and trees - to choose from, it may feel overwhelming. A good company will advise on the pros

and cons of each type of material taking into account the design brief, surrounding landscape as well as your home's architectural style.

Cook Book R e v i e ws The Soup Cleanse

by Angela Blatteis and Vivienne Vella It’s that time of year when many of us feel a bit bloated and start to wish we maybe hadn’t eaten quite so many mince pies.

Soups are a great way to get a real hit of veggies, providing lots of vitamins, minerals, fibre and protein, with no added ‘junk’. They’re usually low-calorie, so can

The effects of a few too many glasses of wine and selection boxes, are all too apparent in our hair, skin and energy levels.

help with weight loss, as well as helping you to detox and boost your energy. While the book focuses on soups, it does include other healthy meals, snacks and drinks. Baked Wild Salmon with Avocado, Ginger and Mango Salsa anyone?

Detoxes can be a great way to get back on track, but most aren’t exactly pleasurable. Who wants to sip cold juices, or nibble on some lettuce when it’s so bloomin’ cold out? The Soup Cleanse is a great alternative. Choose from a range of detox programmes, starting at a one-day mini-cleanse, and lots of very tempting recipes, from Red Lentil and Caramelised Onion Soup to Pumpkin Miso Soup.

Unlike many health books, The Soup Cleanse is easy to read, and enjoyable. There’s no lecturing, or nagging, just great advice and 50 recipes to choose from.

The Usbourne Healthy Cookbook by Fiona Patchett

Trying to get children to eat healthily can be stressful, to say the least. It can feel that the healthier a meal is, and the longer it takes to prepare it, the less chance there is that the kids will eat it. One way to tempt them is to get them involved with the cooking. Kids are far likelier to eat something if they’ve had a hand in making it. There are a few healthy kids’ cookbooks on the market, but one of the best has to be the Usbourne Healthy Cookbook. 68

Recipes are easy to follow, with clear step-by-step instructions and plenty of photos and illustrations. They’re not too complicated either; some can be completed by a child on their own, while others require a bit of help from adults. There are plenty of main dishes, along with desserts and drinks. Some recipes tempt kids with food they’ve likely tried, such as fruit salad or chicken fajitas, while others may encourage them to be a bit more adventurous. Children are taught about nutrition, portion size and the importance of a varied diet as they learn to cook. A bonus is that the book is spiral-bound, so lies flat, making it much easier to keep in place when they’re cooking.

With any luck, it’ll inspire them so much that they’ll be cooking for you regularly, while you relax in front of the TV with a glass of wine. (We can but hope, can’t we?)

KEEPING FIT & WELL

CAN BRING MORE THAN JUST HEALTH BENEFITS only eight per cent of us will actually keep our New Year’s resolutions,” explained Paycare CEO, Kevin Rogers. “But it doesn’t have to be like that. Breaking bad habits and picking up better ones requires an action plan, and more importantly – it requires taking responsibility for implementing that plan, one step at a time.

Joining a gym, quitting smoking or giving up chocolate are all popular New Year’s resolutions, but the start of 2016 is also the perfect opportunity for local residents to reflect on how their health and wellbeing impacts the wider picture, and

even the business that they work within. Leading Wolverhampton-based health cover provider, Paycare, is reminding those across the region of the importance of looking after their own health to not only see them become more productive at work (which in turn will lead to increased benefits and even a pay rise), but to positively impact those around them too. “Whilst many of us have good intentions at the start of January,

“There’s plenty of literature available about creating an action plan for your goals, but it’s always worth making sure that they’re ‘SMART’, or ‘specific’, ‘measurable’, ‘actionable’, ‘realistic’ and ‘time-bound’. “For more general health and wellbeing goals, it pays to know that Paycare offers a range of health cash plans for individuals, families, over 64s and under 25s, helping you meet everyday costs such as dental and optical checkups, or even professional therapies like physiotherapy and osteopathy. “Ultimately, everyone holds a unique position both within the business they work in and within their respective families, which they can positively influence simply by taking care of themselves. “I’d encourage those interested in finding out more to call 01902 371000, email enquiries@ paycare.org, or visit www. paycare.org,” Kevin concluded. A well-respected and dedicated not-for-profit health cover provider, Paycare has helped individuals, families and businesses across the Black Country and Wolverhampton protect themselves against everyday healthcare costs and bills for over 140 years.

Meet the boss

(both of them)

‘Best kept secret’ with a nose for success A northern lass, with a background in catering and sales, she is the selfconfessed “engine of development”. Wife of the Vineyards’ wine maker, she fizzes with the creativity that will doubtless see more site evolvement over the coming years. “We’ve already expanded the tearoom into what was the old shop, but I’d like to make a few more changes to take advantage of the spectacular views,” she says. Other plans – she’s not prepared to give the competition a heads-up – remain under wraps. Wine Loft view – Lisa and Clive Vickers with the shop in the background

brew hobby – has morphed into one of the top five award-winning wine producing businesses of the UK.

Award-winning Vineyards: a truly English gem It is, according to its owners, “the best kept secret” of the Midlands – a gem to be discovered where its produce tempts the taste buds and fine wines revive the soul. For some, Halfpenny Green Vineyards still slips beneath the radar despite gaining national and international acclaim for its wines and attracting a growing number of discerning visitors who wish to sample its unique English charm. Afternoon tea with posh cake at this rural retreat with gently undulating views over the Staffordshire and Shropshire countryside really is a must-have. But the experience is more… much more. What started out to be nothing more than a joke – planting half an acre of vines to indulge a home72

On its journey there, this familyrun enterprise has created a farm site hub that offers fine dining, conservatory tea room, an extensive farm shop, popular deli, wine loft (there’s a lift), conference facilities, visitor tours, a thriving craft centre with 15 units and the glorious tranquil option of fishing on three coarse specimen lakes. After 30 years of wine production, the Vineyards is now a serious contender with its bottles to be found at Marks & Spencer – a national endorsement of which the owners are fiercely proud. Today the third generation business, employing more than 40 staff, is run by Clive Vickers and wife Lisa. Taking in the views on the high ground of south facing slopes full of neatly lined vines, Lisa, the visionary behind the more public aspects of the site affairs, says: “I still have to pinch myself. It’s a lovely setting in which to work and I am continually amazed by what we have achieved here over the last 15 years as well as bringing up two daughters. “It’s just a fabulous place to be part of, but so many people come to us and say they never knew we existed and they live right on the doorstep. It really must be the best kept secret…” says Lisa.

Lisa married Clive in 2000 and the family took a brave decision to take her into the business. “Understandably, there were worries for Clive and myself having, as it were, all our eggs in the same basket. The decision was obviously the right one,” she adds with a smile. This year alone she has doubled the shop area and the business footfall is continuing to rise. With a passion for not-on-thehigh-street goods, Lisa’s shop is a cornucopia of desirables. “We have started stocking teas and I have invested a lot of time researching what makes a good brew. Your average supermarket teas are really just the stalk of the tea bush and not the leaf. Birchall use only the top two leaves of the bush. “Our selection is defined not only by its taste, but its colour. When brewed it’s more of a bright, golden colour, rather than the brown we know that is created by the infusion of the inferior stalk of the plants. “I’ve also added traditional sweets – The Big Kids’ Sweet Shop,” she says. Walking through the tearoom conservatory, the barn with its wine loft, the deli and gift shops, the restaurant and function room, every turn is an opportunity for Lisa to muse on future plans. But this outstanding business success story might never have happened had Clive’s father, Martin, been inclined to take his son’s counsel.

wolverhampton west magazine | february 2016

It was a hugely rewarding outcome for the family who has been entering their wines every year for more than 30 years. Perhaps one of the youngest experienced winemakers in the country, with 21 vintages under his belt – Clive says the secret of a good wine is 80 per cent the quality of the grapes, including the growing conditions of the particular year. “The remaining 20 per cent involves all of the nuanced aspects of winemaking that take place between harvest and bottling,” he adds. Hidden gem – Clive & Lisa take the high ground overlooking one of the lakes & vine planting

Martin, who still plays an active role in the business and lives on site, was a home-brew enthusiast. “The kind of winemaker where demijohns explode under the stairs,” Clive recalls. “In 1983 I helped him plant the first vines. I had to dig 400 holes and I thought dad had gone insane. The farm here was a traditional arable business. “There was no great diversification plan and the half-acre planting was no risk, but three years later we planted another half-acre on the back of producing 100 bottles that were consumed by the family,” he adds. Between 1994 and 2000 the focus of business was clearly changing, with a proper winery installed and a restaurant extension. More major development followed with a large, airy conservatory being added in 2005, followed by an increase in vineyard acreage and a state of the art winery being built, the latter being doubled in size in 2009 and again in 2013.

The business has made national and regional headlines and has been featured on TV for its award-winning wines. Last year the Vineyards took 26 prestigious awards for their wines on both a national and international level across four major wine competitions. Wines from all over the world, including Old World wine countries such as France and Italy, were judged in the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge, which saw the Vineyards take a Silver and two Bronze awards, respectively. Next came the UK Vineyard Awards, where Clive and his team’s knowhow saw them scoop no less than eight medals, including four Silvers and three Bronze. The year rounded out with an unprecedented 11 medals at the Mercian Vineyard Awards, including a Gold medal and trophy for its new dry white wine, Mercia 2014.

“Of course that 20 per cent also involves experience, knowledge, innovation and having state of the art kit.” In recent years the winery produced a red wine called Rondo with an alcohol level of 15 percent, which won a Silver at the Decanter World Wine Awards. An Indian summer in 2011 that saw record sunshine levels in September helped produce exceptionally sugar-rich grapes. Clive says: “It’s very unusual for an English red to be so high in alcohol, and it’s a first in our 30 year history.” Another unusually warm summer graced the Vineyards in 2014 resulting in another 15 percent Rondo, which is currently for sale in a limited run in the farm shop. Climate change indeed appears to be helping produce some better quality UK grapes, but with an M&S endorsement and an emerging market for English wines in India and China, this “best kept secret” seems to be one that an awful lot of people are getting to know.

A function room – The Wine House – has now been added with a viewing area into the winery for those wishing to partake in guided tours and tastings, and the former kennels, cattery and racehorse stables have been converted into craft units, with a new zoo attraction opening in Easter 2016. Currently, as well as processing its own grape harvests, more than 40 other UK vineyards have contracts with Clive and his team to produce their wines, making Halfpenny Green Vineyards one of the largest contract wine producers in the UK. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Which Wine with

What? Choosing wine can be a bit of a minefield, and it’s all too easy to get it wrong. Follow our cheat’s guide to creating the perfect match. Fish course - Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require well-bodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well.

work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese course - There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder.

Spicy dishes - You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to complement these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes.

In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. Have fun with your choices and enjoy!

Juicy red meat - Bring out a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon. Turkey - Choose a fullflavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Veggie main - There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds 74

Bravo! By Geoff Hall

And Steve Bull is now looking for a business partner to help take the business to a new level.

The dream team, Steve, Ender & Mario

Brimming with confidence after celebrating its fourth year in business in December last year, Bravaccio’s restaurant continues to go from strength to strength in 2016. Much change is afoot at the popular eatery, with upcoming extended opening hours, new staff members, as well as the addition of some all-new al fresco dining space, just in time for spring. The popular restaurant, which is famous for top-notch Italian cuisine and owned by former Wolves and England football supremo Steve Bull, has quickly worked its way into the hearts and minds of locals since it first opened its doors at the Upper Green, Tettenhall site on 1st December 2011.

Mark, both now ably assisted by new apprentice chef Kate. Having so quickly built a reputation as one of the top places to eat in Wolverhampton, no-one at the restaurant is ready to rest on their laurels. So now Bravaccio’s will soon be introducing new longer opening hours, including daytimes. Improvements will be forthcoming to the premises, with an expansion in the offing at the rear of the site to accommodate an outside dining space. Furthermore, Ender Calistir is joining the front of house team as restaurant manager. He has vast experience in the trade, having previously worked at Miller & Carter and at Zest for 8 years.

He says: “I would just love to take the restaurant to the next level and to do that I realise we could do with an experienced investor to join the team and become a partner. “The restaurant is a fun place to be and we are lucky to have such a tremendous bunch of people around us. Mario is top class, as is everybody who works here. I am excited that Ender is coming to join us too, as I know he has a wealth of experience and is very good at what he does. “We have come a long way in a relatively short time and have learned a lot along the way. We pride ourselves in trying to offer value-for-money food, backed up with excellent service in lovely surroundings. “Exciting times lie ahead.” You said it, Steve.

Of course, its loyal customer fan base doesn’t only consist of knowledgeable locals – there’s notable away support too, with many regular patrons happy to travel far and wide to savour the culinary delights conjured up by Head Chef Mario Bennescuitti and his assistant of 20 years,

Patshull Park H O T E L

By Rob Taylor

Away from the hustle and bustle of the Wolverhampton metropolis is an elegant enclave encircled by rolling countryside and swan-topped lakes. Locals know it more intimately as Patshull Park Hotel and – after spending a recent Sunday lunchtime inside the Lakeside Restaurant – I heartily recommend that you get to know it too. But, before I get ahead of myself, here’s some background. Always a popular destination, the complex has garnered a loyal following over the years for myriad reasons: you have the golfers who are keen to master its challenging course; fitness club members, keen to take advantage of the Star Trac cardio equipment, 15-metre heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi and beauty therapy rooms; the many party-goers keen to take in top visiting entertainment like the recent Take That tribute band or to hold their own private function; the long-standing regulars who swear there is just no other place like it when it comes to quality traditional values and refinement; the socialites hungry to be seen when they are dropped off by their drivers outside the impressive entrance façade and then there’s the just plain hungry. I am today, I must confess, among the latter. But don’t think that just because of that I’m unfit to discern the difference between my experience

at Patshull and the typically woeful “pack ’em in to the rafters and feed ’em at a trough” Sunday lunches which are served elsewhere. Restaurant manager Yvonne is our genial host and, after taking our coats, she invites my girlfriend Nicola and I to have a drink at the adjacent bar, while we look over the ‘Three-course lunch including filter coffee or tea’ menu. Priced at £19.95 per person, my first thought is that – given how appetising and expansive the menu seems – this represents rather good value for money. And things get even better you can treat a loved one to a Candlelit Valentines Dinner for just £25pp on February 13th including chocolates for the ladies and melodies from Paulo Pinto or an overnight stay including Valentines dinner, full English breakfast and use of Spa for £149 per couple.

Before I can fully soak up the charms of the relaxed lounge space, which provides the link between restaurant and bar, we are shown to our dining table. Immediately I am struck by a warm and homely feel inside, full of regular diners, laughing merrily and gobbling up their starters. However, the generous dining space is at this point still rather quiet, since we are among the earliest visitors. Seated at an immaculately presented table beside panoramic windows overlooking the lake, I am struck by a strong sense of serenity, entirely at odds with the raucous racket attendant at so many venues at this time on a Sunday. The charming addition of a live pianist adds enormously to the ambience and already almost in itself sets the restaurant apart. This, when coupled with the very friendly staff, helps to create a very welcoming and homely atmosphere. For many it is as inviting as a trip to visit close family. Except in this dining room there is space for nearly 200 guests and no one ever falls to sleep in front of the TV. Because, happily, there isn’t one. There is here instead an accent on what’s really most important; what makes regular diners come back year after year – I overhear one diner request a reservation for Christmas Day lunch 2016!; what makes many of the staff who work here stay for almost all of their working lives, like 22-year veteran, Operations Manager, Simon Ward. He says: “We pride ourselves on traditional, old-fashioned values centred around providing the very best personal service to our clients.

82

wolverhampton west magazine | february 2016

“We have a very experienced team of staff who work tirelessly to adhere to this ethos and after so many years we are very proud to be still here. So many of our clients return again and again and that’s proof that we are doing something. “We’re very keen to let readers know that we’re still here and more keen than ever to open the place up to those people who have yet to experience what we have in store for them at Patshull Park.” Let me tell you that the food served at Patshull is sensational and testament to the ethos of appreciating talented staff (Head Chef Terry Maylon has been here for over 10 years), so that they in turn can pass the rewards back to the customer. And boy are there rewards!

the white wine and dill sauce is a triumphant addition to the dish; the fish is tender and moist. The turkey, I am reliably told, is succulent and moist; the potatoes, we agree, are soft and pillowy; the carrots, crisp and parsnips, perfect. Nicola is at a loss and can pay no greater compliment than by ranking it among her top five ever turkey dinners. Let me assure you: every component of this delicious ambrosia is devoured.

up-tempo gaiety, orchestrating every guest’s mood and mindset, ensuring that everyone enjoys that unmistakeable Sunday feeling.

As our desserts appear – two ‘Chocolate Bavarois with cherry coulis’ – restaurant numbers begin to swell, as many large parties of hungry diners arrive, eagerly seeking shelter from the cold snap outside. Yet none of the warmth and intimacy of the restaurant is lost, as Richard the pianist, just switches tempo from soft melancholy to

Bookings are now being taken for Valentine’s Day Dinner on Saturday 13th February, Valentine’s Lunch & Dinner on Sunday 14th February and Mothering Sunday 6th March.

It’s very impressive – as is our sexy, smooth-bodied dessert – and gives us much to ponder as we sip coffee and relax in the lounge later on. Chiefly two questions are on our lips: why have we not been here before? And when is the earliest we can come back?

Patshull Park Golf & Resort Hotel Patshull Road, Pattingham, Shropshire WV6 7HR

My ‘Fresh Water Prawns – served with a leaf salad and citrus dressing’ arrest my taste-buds, tantalise my palate and lead me to eulogise about not a lot else until the mains arrive. Similarly Nicola’s ‘Seasonal Melon – with mixed berry and mulled wine compote and mango puree’ brings much acclaim. Every morsel is hoovered up in record time. After only the merest pause the main courses arrive: my ‘Grilled Salmon Fillet in a white wine and dill cream sauce’ and my long-suffering girlfriend’s ‘Roast Local Turkey with traditional accompaniments and gravy’, both with assorted vegetables and roast potatoes. The salmon is simply spectacular;

Chris Jewkes Fitness The Midland’s Premier Personal Training Centre That’s why we caught-up with one of the UK’s leading fitness professionals, Chris Jewkes, to find out how he and his team are helping people to change their lifestyle and achieve real weight-loss and fitness results from their dedicated personal training club in Tettenhall. So if any of the following scenarios apply to you, pay close attention to how Chris can help:

How many times have you started the New Year promising that you’ll quit your bad habits, get fit and start the diet you’ve been putting off? Probably more times than you can remember. It’s easy to have good intentions, but it can be hard to motivate yourself long enough to get past January, let alone achieve the results you want when it comes to losing weight and getting in-shape. But, with the right support, it’s a lot easier than you think to meet your goals; you just have to know where to start.

86

I’ve been seriously over-indulging throughout the festive season and I’ve gained more than a few extra pounds. I really want to lose weight but I’m incredibly out of shape. How can you guys help? Our club is completely dedicated to personal training, we have ten highly skilled trainers ready and waiting to work with you to achieve your goals. Every client is completely unique and we specifically tailor a plan that suits each individual’s lifestyle and their exercise and weight-loss targets. For me it’s really intimidating to even walk into a gym, let alone start exercising!

We understand that a lot of clients feel that way but our club isn’t anything like a large health club, it’s a personal club and it’s been designed to create the perfect environment for clients, so that they can feel completely comfortable. It doesn’t matter what your current weight or fitness level is, your session is specifically tailored for you. We have lots of different

clients, our oldest is 94 years old and our biggest is 37 stone. So what should I expect if I come to the club for a personal training session? We have four important points that we always work to; accountability, motivation, training smart and achievements. We ask our clients to be accountable by keeping track of what they’re eating with a food diary and we motivate them by setting small and achievable goals. Training smart means that we use equipment and exercises that make the body do all the work and that are most beneficial to our client - based on the achievements they want to attain - whether that’s dropping a few dress sizes or running a marathon. A lot of people go to the gym several times a week but just don’t get the results they want and that’s usually because they’re not training smart. If you’re not using the right equipment or not using it properly then you won’t get the results you need. We’re completely results driven, we take time to really understand our client’s goals and lifestyle because exercise has got to be combined with the right diet for real results. At our centre in Danescourt Road we’ve got plenty of great outdoor space and even an outdoor gym, so we use both the indoors and outdoors to give our clients a varied and fun workout.

backgrounds. We’ve got motivational trainers, ex-military trainers, holistic trainers and those who can help clients who are undertaking pre or post operative training. We use everything at our disposal to make achieving your goals as easy as possible. We use apps to track your exercise and diet between sessions and will open the club on any day or time of the week to accommodate your schedule. And our clients can get in touch with their trainer whenever they want to. If they’re eating out and they’re not sure what the best menu option is they can just text for advice. Why is what I’m eating important? Making the right choices when it comes to food is really important for clients to achieve their overall aim. We try to educate clients as much as possible about eating the right foods and changing the way they eat so that they can establish - and continue - good eating habits. Is it just one-to-one training that you offer? No, we do both individual and group training and offer a wide variety of classes that range from Pilates to Boot Camp. What about personal training packages?

We’ve got plenty of personal training packages on offer and each is planned with a specific target in mind. There’s ‘The Ultimate Weight Loss Package’ a ‘Running Package’, a ‘Pre and Post Natal Package’, as well as one that’s designed for those entering the forces. We also have a ‘Rehabilitation Package’ for clients who have undergone surgery as well as a ‘Wedding Package’ that’ll meet the needs of any bride or groom. I’ve seen the club mentioned a lot in the press, you’ve hosted the Midlands Biggest Loser competition for the past few years haven’t you? Yes, we’ve hosted the Midlands Biggest loser competition for the last three years, which has been shown on ITV Central. The winning contestants lost over two stone in one month, which was a fantastic result. That’s why we know that what we do at the club works, our clients achieve real, life-changing results and we enjoy working with all of them. Chris Jewkes Fitness, Danescourt Road, Tettenhall, Wolverhampton WV6 9BQ www.chrisjewkesfitness.com For further details please call 01902 750355.

Our free taster sessions allow clients to get an idea of how they want to train, they can say what they enjoyed, what they didn’t and why. They can also choose the trainer they’d like to work with. Does it really matter which trainer I work with? Finding the right trainer is essential for you to get the most out of your sessions as their training style needs to suit you. We’ve got male and female trainers who have different approaches and www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Try SomeThing new F o r T h e n e w y e a r aT Whether you’ve got an idea of the sort of style you want to try, or don’t know where to start, you’ve got to find a salon that’ll be able to assess your overall look - as well as your hair type and needs - and find the cut and colour that’s perfect for you. We had a chat with Nick Malenko from Royston Blythe to bring you some advice on the things to consider.

We all want to try a new look from time to time but it’s hard to know where to start, what do we need to think about? “The New Year is always a really good time for taking a fresh look at your current style and colour and opting for a revamp. “Think about is what is best for you, what colour will be perfect for your skin and eye colour, what cut is most flattering for your face shape. “It’s easy to just choose a look that someone else is wearing but it doesn’t mean it’s going to flatter you. “You need to have a thorough consultation with both your stylist

If your New Year’s resolution is to ‘try new things’ then maybe you should start with a new hair look. It’s all too easy to opt for the same cut and colour year after year, but sometimes you need a change, and there’s no better time to break out of a style rut than at the beginning of a new year. 88

wolverhampton west magazine | february 2016

and cut will ensure that you stay up-to-date and still look modern.”

Can guys get a new look for the new year too? “Of course, we have loads of guys that come to us at the salon looking for a different look. “There’s plenty of great styles for guys, whether they want something that’s classic or completely ontrend. David Beckham’s hair always looks great, he’s a real style icon for loads of men.”

and colourist before you make any changes as they should be able help you decide what’ll work best for you as an individual. “I believe that it’s important to make your own style and not be led by things like changing your hair colour to suit the seasons. If you’re a blonde who looks fabulous as a blonde, why change because it’s winter? “Loads of celebrities have a signature look - like Sienna Miller with her beautiful blonde shade and boho style - and it works because they’re being true to themselves and they know what suits them. “That doesn’t mean that you should stick with the same cut and colour forever though! Subtle updates and changes to your shade Photo by Jean Nelson

I’m growing my hair, so I don’t want to lose any length and I’m happy with my current colour as I know that it suits me, but I still fancy a different look. What can I do?

We’ve heard that a treatment called Kerastraight can help tame unruly hair. “Yes, the Kerastraight Smoothing System is really popular. Our clients love it because it’s a luxurious treatment that removes frizz and tames tresses for up to four months, whilst maximising condition and leaving the hair glossy and super shiny. “Just getting frizz under control and creating a shiny, glossy look is enough for clients to feel they’ve had a new look whether they opt for a different cut and colour or not.”

And finally, we’ve got to ask, how was your Christmas?

“Why not go for some hair extensions? You don’t have to lose length for a new look, you can just add to it.

“It was great, the salon was absolutely buzzing leading up to Christmas, things are just starting to settle down now.

“Hair extensions are great for reinventing your look. You can use them to add length, thickness, texture and even colour to your hair. We use Rapture extensions at the salon and application takes only 30-40 minutes for a full head, so it’s a quick and easy process and the results are amazing.”

“We got to go to loads of fabulous parties and caught up with the ladies from the Real Housewives of Cheshire - we had an amazing time.”

Is there a way of transforming hair that’s damaged? “Yes, there’s an amazing three step programme called Olaplex. It’s used by A-listers like Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow and it works by repairing bonds within the hair shaft, known as disulphide bonds. These are broken down during processes like colouring and heating, leaving the hair weak and damaged. “Repairing the bonds improves the condition and texture of the hair. Olaplex works from the inside to fix damage, unlike masks and conditioners that just form a temporary surface. “It can be used as a standalone treatment or used as part of the colouring process at the salon. The results are incredible and our clients have been delighted with their rejuvenated, silky, shiny tresses.”

Break your bad beauty habits by Helen Taylor

Courtesy of New Topshop Beauty’

The Solution

Try something new Try a new style - maybe sweep your hair up, or use hair accessories to attain a different look. Find products that cater to your needs; if you want straight lengths then use a straightening shampoo and conditioner. You don’t have to say goodbye to your much-loved heat styler altogether, instead use it more sparingly and ensure that you spritz your hair with a heat protecting product first.

Bad Beauty Habit #3

Using make-up that is past its best Some plead ignorance, others say they can’t let go, but whatever excuse you’ve got for not throwing that ancient mascara away won’t cut it when you hear the truth about out-of-date make-up. Although your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. And over time, you can end up suffering from some seriously nasty eye infections, skin irritations and blemishes.

The Solution

Regularly clear-out your make-up bag Mascaras, liquid eyeliners and lip glosses should be thrown away every 3 or 4 months. Foundation is ok for around 12 months, as are lipsticks and eyeshadows.

It’s the start of another new year, which means that there has never been a better time to leave your bad beauty habits in the past.

Getting stuck in a make-up rut

Here’s how to do it:

You’ve been applying your make-up the same way for as long as you can remember. You haven’t updated the colour of your cosmetics for many years and you’ll only ever buy certain products.

Bad Beauty Habit #1

It sounds like you’re stuck in a make-up rut.

Sleeping with your make-up on Never - no matter how tired you are - go to bed with any trace of make-up still on your face. Mascara that hasn’t been removed will quickly dry-out your eyelashes, making them brittle and weak. Last night’s foundation will clog your pores, leaving you prone to nasty break-outs.

The Solution

The Solution

Get a professional opinion The easiest way to break this bad beauty habit is to seek some professional help. Visit any one of the top beauty counters in your favourite department store and ask for a make-over. Most consultants will be more than happy to help you find a new-look and often this service is free.

Bad Beauty Habit #5

Establish a cleansing routine

Overlooking your eyebrows

Make cleansing your face a priority. Dedicate 15 minutes in the evening to your skin: cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply your face and eye creams.

Over-plucked brows are as bad as over-grown brows; many women make mistakes when it comes to one of their most important facial features.

Always keep a pack of cleansing wipes next to your bed, so that if you return home after a big night out you can still attempt to remove some of your make-up.

Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful.

Bad Beauty Habit #2

The Solution

Ego: New Year, New Look forward or celebrity-inspired look they’ve been obsessing over. “As soon as we saw Ellie Goulding’s slick back style that she wore at the American Music Awards we were in love. It’s such an easy-towear, versatile look that is gorgeous worn either super sleek or slightly messy - our clients love it.” And the team style lots of celebrityinspired looks at the salon. “We have loads of clients ask us for a style that they’ve seen on a celebrity, some want a real statement trendy look whereas others want a more classic cut.”

2016 is here and the Ego team can’t wait to help their clients find a fabulous new look for the New Year. So, whether you fancy a different colour, cut or style, there has never been a better time to book in at the salon. As owner, Layla, explains: “We’re always really excited at this time of year when clients come to us wanting to try something different. It’s easy to just go for the same cut and colour each time you visit the salon, but a whole new look can make you feel amazing.” There are some gorgeous looks for guys and girls at the moment and the team stay completely up-to-date. “Keeping up with all of the latest trends is really important to us. We’re all massive social media followers and we love seeing the latest celebrity styles and trends as they happen.” That means it’s easy for clients to get the on-trend, fashion-

Classic styles never go out of fashion and the team always make sure they’re finished with a modern twist. “The longer length bob - or Lob - is a great classic style that looks gorgeous worn sleek, volumised or tousled there’s loads of ways to interpret it.” “Kylie Jenner rocked a glossy bob at the GQ Awards that looked fabulous. We love Channing Tatum’s wife, Jenna Dewan’s, new restyled longer shaped bob too.”

to emphasise the look by creating a deep side parting that is faded or slightly undercut on the one side, whilst structured on the other. The look can be worn sleek or vintage style, with waves for texture.” And there’s a new trend this year, that’s followed on from 2015’s popular Man Bun look; it’s called the Man Bob: “Guys with longer hair can try the Man Bob style. It’s really important to finish the look with loads of texture though to give it a real masculine edge.” With so many great looks to choose from it’s easy to see why the team are so excited to style a new look for their clients. “We’re all really passionate about what we do at the salon and we love being able to make a difference to our clients.” Whether you’re looking for a subtle change or a completely new style, there’s no doubt that the team at Ego will be able to help you find it.

It’s not just about ladies hair at the salon though, the team are just as excided to keep up-to-date with the hottest hair looks for the guys. “Men’s hair is huge and we’re having to keep-up with trends by analysing men’s fashion weeks and the catwalk looks from top designers. Textured quiffs are a great look for guys and can be styled for a relaxed or structured look.” Men at the salon can always try another trend that’s here to stay; the 1960’s side parting: “It’s easy

Cosmetique And it’s reassuring to know that you’re in capable hands when undergoing any sort of treatment. “We are not a beauty salon, the procedures we offer are carefully researched, backed by medical evidence and carried out by professionals.”

The clinic also has laser treatments for hair removal, skin rejuvenation and the treatment of hyper-pigmentation. “We have a state-of-the-art Magma Diode Laser that has an IPL and laser head.” Hair removal is incredibly efficient with the laser, after only a few sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, clients can see a real difference. “On average, 4 treatments are needed for underarms, face and any other part of the body.” Unlike most laser machines, the clinic’s Magma Diode Laser is suitable for use by women and men who use sunbeds. It also takes the hassle out of planning treatments:

Suky Chana, Director (right) with client Helen Ryan

“With some machines you will have to plan a year in advance, as you can’t go out into the sun after having a treatment. With our machine you can go on holiday and out into the hot sun a fortnight after treatment.”

We all want to look our best, that’s why it’s all too easy to get dragged-down by those nagging beauty issues we notice every day when we look in the mirror.

So, if you’re planning to go away in June, you’d only need to start your course in February to get four lots of treatment in.

But, you don’t have to live with those imperfections any longer, as Wolverhampton’s brand-new aesthetics clinic, Cosmetique, has a solution.

And there’s never been a better time to try-out the laser as Cosmetique are currently running an offer where clients can have four treatments for the price of three.

Owner, Suky Chana explains:

Since opening in September 2015 the clinic has already treated many clients.

“Whether you’re struggling with acne or ageing skin we can help. We offer a full range of expert, non-surgical treatments that address a wide range of dermatological conditions.” Acne treatments, skin peels, anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers and stretch mark removal are amongst the most popular treatments carried out at the clinic. “All of our treatments are performed by expert clinicians, we have a team that consists of consultants, nurses and a local GP.”

“The results are remarkable, we’ve had clients that have seen a difference after one treatment.”

“We’ve had a great response from clients and we were delighted with how many people called in to see us at our open evening back in September. Suky continues: "Since then we held another event in November, we offered anti-wrinkle injections at cost price and excellent discounts on treatments that were booked at the event.” Whatever your beauty concern, contact the clinic today and enjoy looking amazing in 2016.

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY

A MYSTERY OF LOVE

As a nation we are not particularly prone to celebrating saints’ days. We don’t do as many parts of Europe do, hold fun-filled festivals to celebrate this or that saint’s memory. Few of us celebrate a saint’s day dedicated to ourselves as they do in France say. Indeed if you asked the average person-in-the-street to name any saint and the day he or she is celebrated, St.Valentine’s Day would probably be the only one they could name with any certainty. Stranger still is the fact that this particular saint is no longer included on the Vatican’s ‘official’ list of saints. So who was this extraordinarily persistent saint, when did he live? Where did he come from? And why for goodness’ sake, does he represent everlasting and passionate love? There are several candidates. Some say he was a bishop from Terni who met a martyr’s death in Rome either during the time of Claudius the Second or perhaps Aurelian. If during the latter’s period of influence, then the date has been set at AD 271 with the event actually occurring on February 14th. Then there was a Roman priest martyred for his faith in AD 269, 98

an Umbrian bishop executed in AD 273 and any of a series of nameless centurions who followed their Christian loved ones into the arena when they were condemned to martyrdom for their beliefs. Trying to relate the dates of these martyrs to February 14th is hardly possible because the calendar has been changed radically since those ancient times. February 15th saw the start of the Roman festival of Lupercalia which was a favourite time for Roman emperors to stage mass executions for the edification of the Roman people. The Lupercalia was also a festival dedicated to the celebration of fertility and indirectly love. Young men roamed the streets dressed in the skins of sacrificial animals, in pursuit of any woman or girl they could catch. Any female touched by one of these young men was assured of her fertility in the coming year - for one reason or another! The river god Pan was also said to roam abroad at this time and could be encountered in the reeds by rivers and streams. Doubtless many an encounter took place but whether Pan was responsible for the result is an open question! The Romans brought the Lupercalia to Britain but it is pretty certain that a similar festival pre-dated its arrival. The Romans as usual, simply mixed

and matched both religions and festivals and added them to their own extensive pantheon of gods and list of celebratory events. It is an interesting fact that only in Britain is this festival still observed. A similar custom once observed in France on the 1st day in Lent and dedicated to Pan and Juno is long defunct. When trying to trace the shadowy figure behind the legend, the fact that Roman soldiers were the main celebrants of the day does indicate a connection with that unfortunate centurion, though whether he died voluntarily for love, was executed for some misdemeanour or was killed accidentally while shepherding his prisoners into the arena, will probably never be known. The truth is the day is probably a composite of several Pagan festivals, Christianised at some time by missionaries in the way they did at the time and given the name of some unfortunate martyr who just happened to meet his death at around the appropriate date. The Lupercalia itself was eventually superseded by the Feast of Candlemass, and St.Valentine, whoever he was, was left on the calendar of saints because there was simply no one else to claim the day. One thing is certain, if he did indeed exist as a person, he would have been amazed to know how long his sacrifice would be remembered.

EYEDREAM of...

a life without specs or lenses Eyedream is a vision therapy that brings a modern approach to a technique known as orthokeratology.

to Eyedream lenses, the sandbags worked by flattening the cornea.

Custom made rigid contact lenses, available at Taylor Biddle Opticians, gently correct vision during sleep, providing clear, natural vision without the need to wear spectacles or contact lenses during the day. Because the cornea is elastic, this is a nonpermanent and reversible solution, unlike more radical laser surgery.

Director Tracey Taylor says: “Eyedream lenses are an ideal solution for short-sighted people who are unable or find it difficult to wear spectacles or contact lenses. One of the main reasons we decided to offer Eyedream lenses is because studies have shown that

by altering the shape of the cornea (the front of the eye), we can slow down or even halt progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in children. High myopia is not only a problem with not seeing clearly without a correction, but can also increase the risk of developing serious eye conditions such as retinal detachment or glaucoma. These specialist lenses are replaced every six months and cost about the same as daily lenses worn every day.” Please inquire about your suitability and further details at our Compton practice.

The treatment has ancient roots. About 3000 years ago shortsighted Chinese discovered that if they slept with sandbags over their eyes, they would wake up with clearer vision and be able to see far enough to stay out of danger and hunt for lunch! Similar

Tom’s tip:

Diabetes

What is Diabetes Mellitus?

This is a condition where you have raised blood glucose levels (called hyperglycaemia) due to a metabolic disorder.

There are two main types of diabetes: TYPE I – (Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients control their diabetes with insulin TYPE II – (Non Insulin Dependant Diabetes Mellitus) where patients may control their diabetes through diet, tablets or sometimes insulin. Both of these types of diabetes can be harmful to feet. It is essential that everyone with diabetes of either type visit a Podiatrist regularly for a 6 – 12 monthly check up and whenever they have foot problems. Your podiatrist may recommend a much more frequent visit.

Why should diabetics see a Podiatrist? Diabetes is directly linked with profound changes to your feet. The circulation to and around your feet can deteriorate meaning you are more susceptible to infection, less likely to heal quickly and your skin quality reduces meaning it is easier to damage. The sense of feeling in your feet can also reduce so that it is possible to damage your feet and not know about it. It is important we monitor your feet regularly so that we can detect these changes early on. Even some seemingly simple problem like corns, callus or toenail cutting could cause much bigger problems like ulcers, infection, gangrene, and at worst amputation if not treated properly.

WOLVERHAMPTON HIP

Basic Guidelines for Diabetics • Wash feet daily and dry thoroughly – especially between the toes, and file nails. • Apply an aqueous cream such as E45 to your feet daily but not between your toes. • Check your feet daily for anything unusual – colour changes, breaks in the skin, swelling, discharge etc. • Always wear shoes or house slippers on your feet to protect them. • Ensure your shoes are the correct fit and are adjustable – 2 cm heel, laced shoes are the best.

Warning Signs Redness, Swelling, Pus, Discharge, Pain. Diabetes health care is a key part of a podiatrists job role.

Education

and Schooling

by David Williams – Headmaster of Tettenhall College centres and an international airport. The aerial shot of the College and its playing fields and greenery is a welcome and impressive site for someone brought up in Ho Chi Minh City or Guangzhou.

David Williams with teachers in Nigeria

I am fortunate as part of our international recruitment strategy at Tettenhall College to have the opportunity to visit several countries and meet pupils, parents, agents and teachers who see the value of a UK independent school education. The history of our country and schools, pupilcentred learning, smaller schools and class sizes coupled with a respected tradition that focuses on the development of the whole person including the opportunity for sports, the arts and outdoor education make our sector an attractive proposition. Our thriving and friendly boarding community also provides an excellent supportive environment for those making a first step here before, in the majority of cases, applying for a university in the UK. Black Country locals may also be interested to note that Tettenhall village and Wolverhampton provide a highly attractive location for international pupils providing the “best of both worlds” with a safe secure situation but proximity to lively urban 112

What we are also offering are the benefits of travel and experiencing life in another country. It is most satisfying to see the development of a Thai, Russian, Serbian or Chinese pupil who may have come from a school of 3000 plus pupils flourishing linguistically and intellectually in a very different environment. Of course, the simple act of experiencing another country and culture is in itself educational and this is something that is part of lifelong learning ought to be continued until one is no longer capable of doing so. My most recent trip took me to Nigeria where a group of teachers from these shores provided training and idea exchanges for Nigerian teachers in Lagos and Abuja. Despite pleas from family, colleagues and friends not to go the whole experience of visiting such a vast and vibrant country was unforgettable as was the welcome from the Nigerian people. Despite the challenges of the traffic in Lagos that defies description, probably the worst airport experience you could have and the difficulty in sometimes accomplishing basic tasks on time, it is somewhere that I will undoubtedly return to. The trip also further emphasised the value of moving out of the comfort of one’s existence, as do the international pupils at Tettenhall College, to experience another culture, geography and climate. It also made me reflect on our duty as educationalists to ensure that the pupils in our care are encouraged to open their minds in a similar way; be it independently of the school or facilitated by the dwindling band of teachers who refuse to be scared off by risk assessments, health and safety requirements and pressures of curriculum time. Sadly, we can also add the threat of terrorist attack to the list of deterrents where school trip staples such as Paris become potentially off-limits. Yet, we are pleased that visits to foreign climesyes, some more ambitious and therefore costly but others more accessible such as the World War 1 Battlefields-form part of our offering. Not only do these trips bring alive the classroom and illuminate the subject but they may also act as an inspiration for a career, calling or experience later in life. Isn’t that what education should be about? You can now follow David on Twitter

New rules give hope for legal

challenges to wills under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 for reasonable provision to be made for that person. “In both these cases, seeking legal advice from the outset will help you know whether there is any merit in challenging a will, depending on the circumstances and the value of the estate. Opening up the market to allow solicitors to offer a form of credit is good news as it will help people afford to spread the cost of legal support.” FBC Manby Bowdler already operates ‘no win, no fee’ or deferred payment agreements in certain cases.

New rules that will allow solicitors to offer credit agreements could be a lifeline to people wanting to challenge a will. The proposal, made by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, will come into force from April

2016 if the idea is approved by the Financial Conduct Authority and the Legal Services Board. Kimberly Mears, a solicitor with FBC Manby Bowdler, welcomed the move. She said: “This is a really positive step that will help people who would otherwise be unable to afford the costs involved in challenging a will.” The move would allow solicitors to carry out consumer credit activities such as interest free or other credit. Kimberly added: “There are occasions when, following the death of a loved one, a family member might have cause for concern surrounding the content of a will, and the circumstances in which it was executed.

Kimberly explained: “With any litigation, it is always important to bear in mind the value of the estate and the likely costs. We would always advise a client of this at the outset of our instruction. “People can often be put off by the potential costs of a case so the new credit rules could be a lifeline for people. “It is never an easy decision for someone to challenge a will because of the practical and emotional issues it raises. Hopefully this change will give hope to people who decide to take that step.” Kimberly Mears is a key member of FBC Manby Bowdler’s Disputed Probate Team dealing with contested wills and probate. For further advice and guidance contact Kim by email at k.mears@fbcmb.co.uk or call 01902 392455.

“For instance, there might be concerns that their loved one didn’t understand what they were doing or that someone has exerted undue influence over them to draft a will in a certain way.

Richard Bissell, PGA Golf Professional at Patshull Park Golf & Country Club

No Nonsense Golf Tips

Simple Chipping Action I quite often have people come to me struggling with what is really a very simple golf shot. Chipping techniques are often over complicated so I aim to show you a very simple way to setup and execute good chip shots over and over again.

SETUP Stand closer to the ball than you would do for a pitch shot with the feet much narrower. This will mean that the shaft is a little more upright. Position the ball in the middle of your stance with a little more weight on the left hand side.

Grip the club nice and light and slightly down the grip for more control.

TECHNIQUE The basis for this shot is to swing the club very much like a putting action would be. We do not want any wrist or hand action in this shot. Simply rock the shoulders through and let the loft on the club pop the ball up. Vary the length of the backswing for longer chip shots or try using lower lofted clubs. Remember the lower the loft the more the ball will run and the less time it will spend in the air!

Happy golfing.

Steve ‘The Tank’ Kindon

Penn golf club hosted a very successful evening of entertainment with Steve Kindon’ being the main attraction, ably supported by ex Wolves players Steve Daley and Phil Parkes.

‘The Tank’ signed for Wolves in 1972, where his bustling style made him a crowd favourite. He scored 31 goals in over 150 league and cup appearances for the club. Steve is now one of the most popular After Dinner Speakers on the circuit. Wherever he speaks at he never fails in making sure that everyone has a night to remember. He has many hilarious tales and stories about his days in football and he loves to share those experiences with his audiences. He interacted with the packed room at Penn Golf club while making his way around the tables pouring with sweat and receiving a standing ovation at the

end of a superb humorous selfdeprecating routine, although he retired from football many years ago it’s fair to say Steve kept all the younger end of the audience gripped with his antics and style. If you ask him why they call him "The Tank" you might get a different answer now as to when he was playing!

The night finished with a question and answers session, one surprise was unearthed, Phil Parkes is an Albion fan! A donation from the proceeds on the night was made to the two nominated Captains charities, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Alzheimer’s Society, Singing for the brain project.

Gala Dinner 2015 A fantastic evening was organised at Hatherton House Hotel in Stafford to celebrate the first year of Ladies Love Golf. The evening was well supported with everyone enjoying a fabulous 3 course meal and plenty of entertainment throughout the night. The ladies watched video highlights from the year including all their away days, coaching sessions and trips abroad. Gareth Shaw from England Golf spoke highly of the LLG initiative and how impressive the brand has been in having a positive impact on the image of ladies golf. In recent times there has been a drop in ladies golf so it was fantastic to hear how LLG is bucking that trend and driving ladies golf forward.

Congratulations to the three winners of outstanding achievement and improvement for 2015; Lynne Lister, Jill Tranter and Sarah Horden.

Rob Bluck (Academy Director – 3 Hammers) and John Cheetham (LLG Director) also spoke to thank the team involved in making LLG a huge success. John also outlined the exciting plans for 2016 and the future of LLG.

Ladies Love Golf members enjoy a social, fun and relaxed golfing environment as well as having exclusive access to discounted green fees across the region’s golf courses, overseas coaching breaks, PGA away days, a choice of weekly coaching sessions and a free Ladies Love Golf member golf shirt – all for an annual membership fee of £49pp.

After the speeches and before the party got into full swing (no pun intended!), LLG also recognised three ladies for outstanding achievement in 2015. Rory Haigh, Tom Gibbs and John Cheetham (coaches from LLG) spoke about their nomination and presented their winner with a LLG Trophy! 120

The Ladies Love Golf initiative is the brain child of 3 Hammers Senior Golf Instructor John Cheetham who in just 8 months has welcomed over 80 lady members to the complex. Most ladies joined the revolutionary new Academy by progressing through the 3 Hammers Golf Complex’s popular Learn 2 Play Programme, of which half of all students are female.

Lilleshall National Sports Centre On Saturday 14th November, over 300 people came together to support The Red Ball in aid of The Midlands Air Ambulance Charity at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. Five friends, Marie Lycett, Clare Norton, Daksha Patel, Alex Heath & Jane Pinches joined forces to raise money and awareness for the charity based at Dudley Road, Stourbridge. Midland Air Ambulance rescued Marie’s daughter, in June last year, following a near fatal car crash. After the accident, Marie and her family were shocked to learn that the life-saving service of the MAAC is solely funded by charitable donations and so the idea for The Red Ball was born! Over £40,000 was raised on the evening, thanks to the generous support of sponsors, donors and guests. 122

Park Hall Hotel Wolverhampton The annual New Cross Breast Care Nurses' Fashion Show at the Ramada Park Hall Hotel on Friday 27 November was a great success. The models were ladies who have all had a diagnosis of breast cancer and followed courses of treatment. They had a wonderful time "strutting their stuff" to an audience of 500. Sally Mansell of The Fashion Company and Gary from Zak's hairdressing gave their support again this year. The evening was a celebration of survival and the atmosphere was electrifying. The organisers Gill Phillips, Debbie Norman and Pat 124

Royston Blythe The Park House Hotel, Shifnal saw some famous faces when celebrity hairdresser Royston Blythe held its annual staff party. Amid the glitz and the glamour were TV’s Cheshire Housewives’ Dawn Ward and Leanne Brown, as guests were treated to a ‘glamorous’ theme, hosted by the Globe Girls; with entertainment from Niki Evans. Leading from the front in style, hosts Royston and Nick looked amazing – making a staff party this much fun is no easy task, but the boys pulled it off without a hitch. 1. Winter tyres what you need to know Winter tyres are not just effective in extreme snow conditions, they provide a decreased braking distance on icy roads, improved braking in wet conditions and provide better emergency braking on wet, icy and snow-covered roads.

latest Winter tyre, the UltraGrip Performance Gen-1 is an exceptional tyre and has proved this by winning first place in the Auto Express winter tyre test. The Goodyear tyre performed particularly well in Snow traction, Circle and Handling as well as Curved Aquaplaning, The Dunlop Winter Sport 5 is the newest addition to the Dunlop range and has proved to be another outstanding winter tyre by winning second place in the Auto Express winter tyre test. The Dunlop tyre was described as particularly strong in Snow Handling, Curved Aquaplaning, and Wet Braking. It even took first place in the Rolling Resistance test. For more information on winter tyres please contact HiQ Wolverhampton on 01902 420234.

For these reasons, winter tyres are highly recommended for use in temperatures below 7°C, which in the UK is around 150 days of the year. Advantages of using Winter Tyres: • Shorter stopping distances – with braking distance significantly reduced in snow, ice and wet conditions • Improved performance and safety – more control in winter conditions due to innovative winter tyre technology • Resistance to aquaplaning – The specific tread pattern design of winter tyres can disperse more water which reduces the amount of water between the road and your tyres. • Increased tyre life Goodyear’s Winter tyre range has been developed specifically with your safety in mind. A Truly

Tempting TT

By Rob Taylor

Diesel versus Petrol: it’s an age-old conundrum that has as much potential to amuse and enthuse us (or alternatively cause some of us to snooze and abuse) as the forthcoming Batman Versus Superman blockbuster does. And now thrown into this debate is the breathtakingly stylish Audi TT.

It’s now upon me to find out whether opting for the practicality of the as-tested diesel version is a kind of sacrilege right up there with insisting that, yes of course, Batman would win. Surely any sports car like this must be petrol-powered? Well, sales figures say different. In fact, it turns out that today’s TT is so statistically solid that it may even be your next company car. Gulp. Always a favourite with styleconscious drivers since its launch in the late 1990s, the design icon has in its latest third-gen incarnation evolved its form in the spirit of Porsche’s 911 rather than gone back to the drawing board. And from whichever angle you choose to stare, it’s undeniably handsome. This 2.0 TDI Ultra variant starts at just over £30,000, and comes with front-wheel drive and a silky six-speed manual gearbox. Powering the front wheels is a 181 bhp 2-litre diesel engine, borrowed from the Volkswagen Golf GTD. The TT shares the same magical Volkswagen MQB platform architecture too. But why buy it over the petrol? In a nutshell the answer is in the overwhelmingly compelling numbers. Fuel economy is promised to be 67.3mpg combined and emissions is just 110g/km of CO2. With 280lb ft, this diesel model has more torque than the equivalent 2.0 TFSI petrol and is noticeably cheaper to own than 140

the TTS. It’s also on par too when it comes to 0-60 mph sprint times: 7.1 seconds; 150 mph flat out. You really need only buy the petrol if you are obsessed with noise (this diesel engine can be a tad ‘dieselesque’ at low speed and start-up [but then it is a diesel! – Ed]) but, since this car is a coupe and not a convertible, there’s really no reason not to buy from the black pump. But let’s move away from this debate for now and concentrate on what every TT buyer gets. In theory at least, a car ought to be bigger than the sum of its parts and when the TT gets out onto the open road one or two key sensory, tactile observations hit home. The ride – even in sporting trim – is very impressive and surprisingly supple given that some older Audi models had a reputation for being too harshly suspended for UK roads. This car floats – instead of crashes – over all but the worst potholes. The S Line package adds nearly £3,000 and brings sports seats, LED lights – front and rear – and 19in wheels, but it’s worth it. The TT handles smartly too with plenty of front-end grip and even though when it comes to proper driving it’ll never challenge the flamboyance of a Toyota GT86

or Porsche Cayman, who really cares when you are in a ubiquitous traffic jam. Pick a TT and you’ll look fashionable and cool but moreover you’ll be sitting staring at one of the best interiors I’ve ever seen – including those in cars costing three or four times the TT’s modest price tag. The ‘virtual cockpit’ screen, with integrated sat-nav pages and easy music browsing, is a revelation. Much has been made already about the wondrous design of the air vents and the delicious tactility of almost every material used within, so I’ll add nothing more, except to say that it has almost every other manufacturer red-faced. The driving position is spot-on, low-slung enough to be sporty but not uncomfortable enough to make you set the satnav to find the nearest osteopath. Instead you’ll just want to play with the endlessly satisfying ‘virtual’ interface until traffic conditions improve and then you’ll want to just drive some more for laughs, because the TT is a really fun car – as a diesel or a petrol. Although diesel TT drivers, I suspect, will have the last laugh.

Suzuki Vitara

Voted the winner of the compact crossover category in The Sunday Times Top 100 cars of 2016 the first Suzuki to utilise the new BOOSTERJET technology engine which, in Vitara, is a 140PS 1.4-litre Direct Injection turbocharged unit (DITC). This new engine has compact dimensions and offers 220Nm of torque available from just 1,500rpm through to 4,000rpm. CO2 emissions are 127g/km and just one gram higher for the optional six speed automatic transmission.

Suzuki GB PLC would like to share some very good news for its Vitara model as it has been voted the winner of the compact crossover category in The Sunday Times Top 100 cars of 2016.

USB and Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control with speed limiter, auto air conditioning and front and rear electric windows. Suzuki’s latest ALLGRIP four wheel drive technology is available as an option. The most recent addition to the range is the new S model which provides a more sporting and dynamic character to the Vitara line up. The new S is

Suzuki also scored well in the warm hatchbacks category with its popular Swift Sport model. First launched in the UK in January 2012, the Sport again impressed the team who commented: “This might look slow on paper and in the metal too, but get in and you won’t want to release the steering wheel. The Swift’s non-turbocharged 1.6-litre engine is a gem: smooth, revvy and full of heart. The car grips tenaciously, steers with energy and the subtle go-faster tweaks mean nobody else is likely to realise the fun you’re having, particularly if you opt for the five-door version. The three-door is a sub-£14,000 bargain”.

Launched in the UK nine months ago, the Vitara was tested by their editorial team against some very strong competition from four different brands with one costing over £16,000 more for its lowest priced derivative. The Sunday Times comments: “Squint — hard — and you might mistake the new Vitara for a Range Rover Evoque. That’s because Suzuki’s crossover has morphed from a cheap and cheerful off-roader into a primped, well-equipped vehicle that’s top of its class. This has a lot to do with the low starting price.” Vitara SZ4 is available from £13,999 and standard equipment for all models is comprehensive and includes seven airbags, alloy wheels, DAB Radio with 142

rating have been acknowledged by Euro NCAP with two so-called “Advanced Rewards” for PRE SAFE® and ATTENTION ASSIST.

FOR THE MERCEDES-BENZ GLC

Best possible protection for more vulnerable road users

Top score in the Euro NCAP rating

The protection of more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists is also taken very seriously by Mercedes-Benz. The GLC is equipped with an active bonnet which is raised by 80 millimeters during an impact to provide additional deformation space. Under the bonnet, the package has been further optimised with a new engine cover and deformable air intake, creating yet more deformation space. In this way the GLC meets the stringent pedestrian protection requirements of Euro-NCAP, which go well beyond the legal requirements.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC has achieved the top score in the Euro NCAP rating. The new midsize SUV has received five stars, continuing the Mercedes-Benz success story in impressive style. In 2014 the GLA, C-Class and V-Class were likewise awarded five stars by Euro NCAP. The GLC has achieved five stars for occupant safety, child safety, pedestrian protection and its assistance systems – giving it the maximum score in the Euro NCAP rating. The basis for this outstanding result is the perfect interaction between active and passive safety: the combination of a highly rigid safety passenger cell, highly effective restraint systems, the latest driver assistance systems and other measures leads to first-class test results. “The new GLC’s gratifying result in the Euro NCAP rating confirms the success of our efforts in the areas of active and passive safety,” said Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rodolfo Schöneburg, Head of Vehicle Safety, Durability and Corrosion Protection at Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We will continue to intensify our efforts in the future, so as to provide the best possible safety not only for drivers and passengers in a Mercedes-Benz, but also for more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.”

role it plays as a safety pioneer in the field of automotive safety. The comprehensive approach taken by Mercedes-Benz Accident Research Centres focuses on avoiding accidents completely or mitigating their consequences. The company uses the term “Real Life Safety” to describe this approach. Almost all of the driver assistance systems which are familiar from the C-, E- and S Class are available for the new GLC. As part of the Intelligent Drive concept, these systems combine data from various sensor technologies to substantially enhance comfort and safety. COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS, Crosswind Assist, Headlamp Assist and ATTENTION ASSIST are on board as standard. The Driving Assistance package Plus provides an even more comprehensive range of active safety features, comprising DISTRONIC PLUS with Steering Assist and Stop&Go Pilot, PRESAFE® Brake with pedestrian detection, BAS PLUS with CrossTraffic Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist and PRE-SAFE® PLUS. These measures exceeding the bounds of the actual Euro NCAP

Peter Smith, General Manager of Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton, added “Our SUV range is an important part of our showroom, with SUV’s being so popular amongst our customers, Mercedes-Benz must make sure they get it absolutely right when developing the new models. They have done this with this new range, not only do they look so attractive, the safety is second to none too, which is vital! If you need any further information on our SUV range, please call us on 01902 427897.”

Real Life Safety plus Intelligent Drive Assessment by means of crash ratings is only one aspect of the comprehensive safety philosophy followed by Mercedes-Benz. Thanks to the knowledge acquired as a result of accident research conducted in-house, the GLC has also been systematically designed with real-world accidents in mind. In this way, Mercedes-Benz is once again highlighting the leading
