from the editor Spring is a hopeful season, it brings transformation and change; from cold there comes warmth, from the ashes of grey bursts wondrous colour. It is a time for cleaning the house and getting out into the garden.

A time for new life, new beginnings, hotter temperatures, greenery poking out from every crack and crevice and most of all - time for sitting outside a good pub, enjoying a nice cold beer and… and… apologies for tailing off prematurely there, readers, but I fear I may have jinxed us already. All this talk of change seems to have jolted Jack Frost back into life for a final flurry of wintery woe. It’s freezing cold as I write: isn’t reality grim? With snow now sometimes falling in April and birds mistakenly breeding in January, none of us can bank on the seasons anymore. I know it’s definitely hard to keep track of which season it is with so much going on around me at WW HQ. The team and I are always looking way ahead for stories to fill up our pages in the coming months. We’ve got a special celebration coming up in our sister publication Town and Village Life next. In the meantime let’s assume that we’re on the home stretch of winter and focus on spring. To help you transition to the new season, we’ve got inspiration from food to fashion and everything in between. But before we get into all that, it’s time for a recharge and what better time than during National Bed Month. This March the bed specialists at Dreamland Brierley Hill will teach you the art of getting a good night’szzzzzz… because as my old Gran used to say there’s nothing a nice nap can’t solve. It’s clichéd to say that now’s the time to look at your garden, but it is, because the clocks go forward this month, so we’ve got everything you need from tips to suppliers – even if you’re not green fingered or a gardening enthusiast there are specialists from The Potting Shed, Boningale and Lealans Garden Centre who can help. Home improvement is another biggie right now, so here goes: we’ve got a feature on Tettenhall Windows, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year; as well as the low down on fireplaces, furniture, curtains, all types of flooring, blinds, wallpapers and paints, kitchens, bathrooms, doors, fencing, security alarms and lighting. And naturally, unless you are Handy Andy, there’s plenty in the way of builders, plumbers, electricians, and decorators inside too. If you need cleaning services we have all different types for inside and outside the home. If you’re looking to move, we have Berriman Eaton estate agents. When it comes to fashion, hair, beauty and health – we’ve got it covered with Chris Jewkes Fitness, Yoga Lab and South Staffs leisure centres. Paycare can help you manage the cost. Then there’s something for nothing up for grabs in this month’s competitions at The Grand Theatre, West Midland Safari Park, 04

Wombourne Tandoori, and a night with ‘Eddie the Eagle’. We can’t promise you won’t pay but we can promise that you’ll love every minute of it if you eat out at The Cowshed and 3 Hammers – our food reviews say it all. Are you still hungry for more? Then check out Halfpenny Green Vineyards’ new dining space, local butchers – Poxons and Allan Bennett – and Corbelli Italian deli: each one is a cut above. Keeping things moving along nicely is our exclusive Lexus test drive from Lexus Wolverhampton and a look at Porsche Wolverhampton’s latest award; Image Travel’s surprisingly affordable luxury service; holiday planning with personal Travel Counsellor, Kate Milton, and trips to local attractions, including Penkridge’s new bi-annual Children’s Market. Dizzying stuff. If you’re moving on in a different sense then there’s much to interest you about wedding venues – see how Sophie Bagnall of Royston Blythe tied the knot for perfect inspiration; how to choose a top independent school for your child; how to grab an early pension with Midland Independent Financial; stay ahead of Inheritance Tax with FBC Manby Bowder solicitors and maximise your ISA allowance at Dudley Building Society. Phew. Oh, and we have eight pages of Social Scene packed full of movers and shakers too. Of special note is landmark Wolverhampton jeweller Rudells’ 80th anniversary bash – there’s really nowhere better to visit than Rudells with Mother’s Day on the horizon. And at risk of getting egg on my face if I forget, don’t forget Easter is fast approaching too. So there you have it: spring is – vaguely – in the air so let’s embrace it, because it’ll soon be gone and I’ll be talking to you about Christmas again soon. See you in May…

The local

property market by Nick Berriman

As I write the sun is shining and it feels as though spring is not far away. We seem to live in times where what has long been considered the norm is no longer so. This is caused by quite significant changes brought about by escalating prices. Go back to the 50s and 60s when the usual first time buyers’ house was a modern three bedroom semi probably costing around £2,000. Prices first started to seriously rise in the 70s and then first timers were looking for an older refurbished terrace house. As prices rose again something cheaper was needed and that was often a flat. Despite some blips when prices fell the overall trend was still upwards and very many first time buyers were priced out of the market. This then fuelled the rental market. Many young couples rented whilst trying to save the deposit needed to buy. With overall rises outstripping wage increases many have found it impossible and cannot see how they will ever be able to buy. Renters have 10

found the increased flexibility an asset. No longer do people stay in one job for life as they once did and new jobs often mean new places. Renters can move without having to sell first so the increased mobility is an asset. The down side is a lack of security as tenancy agreements do not last forever, although the Labour party have some proposals to address that. The problem is that extra security for tenants may well discourage landlords. Most problems have two sides and in the political arena which side you are on dictates how you see things. A recent survey I read showed that in 2006 72% of 35 – 44 year olds were home owners. In 2016 that figure had reduced to 52%. I do not have the figures for 50 or 60 years ago but I am pretty sure it would have been much higher than 72%. A mortgage or a rent is just the cost of a roof over the head. It is only the dramatic price rises that have made property into an investment which confuses the equation. One of the internet agents, who will remain nameless but who promote funny coloured building materials, do have some very effective television advertising but it does seem to give the impression that they are a free service. Whether it is a commission or a fixed fee it is still a charge and in the case of this particular company it is a charge made at the beginning and is valid whether or not the property is sold. The fee does not have to be paid at the outset but if it isn’t then a credit agreement is required. I am not decrying internet agencies, indeed we have our own, but there needs to be clarity in advertising. The internet has changed all our lives. My father talks of the time when the only way to contact the office when out on appointments was to find a phone box. There was no readily available information

about recent sales and the only way buyers could find out what was available was through newspaper advertising or by phoning or visiting agents. I try to give an impartial report on the state of the local market. We still find that there are potential buyers but a shortage of new instructions. This applies not just to our area but is nationwide. A recent RICS survey highlighted this. We achieved our sales target in January but it was more difficult than in preceding months and February will be similar. One thing that has become noticeable is that the market is price sensitive. If an asking price is reduced it creates immediate interest. That is another advantage of electronic communication as information on price changes can be made known instantly. As we move into what is traditionally a good time of year for selling we must keep our fingers crossed for stability in the market. Fun though it is when it is boom time there is always a bill to pay afterwards and we definitely do not want a slump. Those commentators who say a dramatic fall in house prices is necessary to bring things into balance ignore the personal grief that negative equity and repossessions can cause. We can do without that.

Wolverhampton Half Marathon Events The organisers of the Carver Wolverhampton Half Marathon Events are already busy planning for SUNDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER when they hope thousands will again take to the streets around Wolverhampton, running and cycling or walking in West Park. The decision was taken after the 20th year that due to a decline in numbers and volunteers lacking time to marshal for such a long time, the full marathon has been removed from the programme of Events. It is hoped that numbers will increase in the Half Marathon and Banks’s 10K. After feedback from cyclists in 2017 there will be more marshals and signage on the 20K cycle route. The 10K cycle route will follow the 10K running route as last year. Sponsored by Marston’s Brewery the 10K has become very popular; it starts and finishes on the doorstep of Marston’s and carries the Banks’s brand name.

Cycling legend Hugh Porter with Henry Carver at the start of the 2017 Cycle event

The Events have become a firm fixture in the Wolverhampton calendar and attract competitors from all around the country as well as local people. Paycare in Wolverhampton has now joined the group of sponsors and their name will be added to the list and the children’s run will now be called: The Paycare Children’s Mini Marathon. Race Director Mary Harding has been forging links with Wolverhampton Public Health who are challenging people to take more exercise and improve their fitness. The City of Wolverhampton Council and WV Active are helping with promotion this year in their support of this event which brings the community together to take part in the activities. As Mary says “Our events offer something for everyone to take part in.”

Furthermore the Marathon Events raise thousands of pounds each year for local charities and the official launch on February 2nd saw two new charities announced. Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club and Give us A Break joined charity partner Compton Hospice for a share of the proceeds from the 2018 Events. As always The Mayoral Charity Fund receives a share, the identities of those charities will be announced when the new Mayor takes office. For anyone new to running and thinking of entering any of the race training, advice can be found on the website.

The Marathon website has been updated and entry forms are in circulation. To enter any of the events visit the website www.carverwolverhamptonhalfmarathonevents.co.uk or post your entry to Carvers. Their address can be found on the website.

The importance

of a good night’s sleep

16

We spend about a third of our lives in bed so if we live until 75 we’ll have been asleep for 25 years! We all know that a good night’s sleep is important but how much sleep do we really need and why do we do it?

sleep we should get because we’re all different. Providing you’re not regularly trying to get through your life on two or three hours a night (unless you’re a new mother in which case you have our sympathy) it’s important not to get too hung up on the quantity of your sleep but instead focus on the quality.

The question of why we sleep is actually quite mysterious. In simple terms it’s a daily extended bout of rest where we lay down with our eyes closed. But there’s more to sleep than meets the eye.

• Comfortable temperature (16-18C)

During this time, our bodies replenish energy stores and make vital repairs, while our minds organise and store the memories from the day before. The amount of sleep we need depends on our age, sex, health and other factors, and our sleep cycles change as we grow older.

• A large bed - Buy the largest you can accommodate

Most of us know (or think we do) that we should get ‘8 hours sleep a night’ but in fact there is no magic number for how much

• Quiet - you can buy soft earplugs if noise is a problem though some people sleep better with white noise in the background.

The perfect sleep environment • Fresh air circulating but no draughts. • Dark - try using blackout blinds or an eye mask.

• A quality mattress - try out lots and buy the best you can afford. • Ban technology - The blue light emitted by screens is hazardous to good quality sleep.

• Routine - A regular bedtime routine is an important cue to help us fall asleep. Think about the bath, book, and bed routine we often establish for our children. You can use essential oils, a good book and a warm milky drink. Avoid caffeine, alcohol and screen use too close to bedtime, and never go to bed on an argument! Dreamland, based in Brierley Hill is an independent family-run business and has been the home of luxury beds, bed frames and headboards for more than 40 years and over the decades has earned an enviable reputation in the trade. The friendly and knowledgeable team understand the importance of a good night’s sleep, that’s why they’re keen to help their customers find the right bed for them. Why not pop along to Dreamland, 23 Mill Street, Brierley Hill, DY5 2RG where Mike Brown and his trained team are able to offer impartial advice to make sure you find the perfect bed. www.dreamlandbedding.co.uk. wolverhampton west magazine

client that we recently acquired, who fortunately happened to discuss with her neighbour the options, or more to the point the lack of options she had with her preserved final salary pension benefits held by Sainsbury’s. Her neighbour recommended that she speak to myself which she duly did. It transpired that she was approaching her 55th birthday and in desperate need of some tax free cash so she had contacted Sainsbury’s and they told her that yes she could take her tax free cash however she would be heavily penalised for doing so and also, once she took her tax free cash, her pension income would start. The benefits payable from Sainsbury’s on her 55th birthday were tax free cash of £24,832.60 and a pension for life of £3,724.89 p.a. which she would have to take if she wanted to access her tax free cash. This was considerably less than what she would get once she reached her 65th birthday as her projected pension benefits at that time would be tax free cash of £63,524.00 and a pension of £9,528.00 p.a.

I must add at this point that if this client was not looking to take benefits immediately, my advice would certainly have been that she remain in the scheme as the transfer value being offered was not sufficient to warrant transferring. To put this into perspective the second client I want to look at first requested a transfer value 3 years ago and was offered £123,000 - a figure way below what we thought represented fair value. We then diarised this and the following year the transfer value came back at £127,000 and 12 months later £134,000. Compare this with the transfer value she has just received which is £204,000 - a significant increase and now we are looking at fair value. The motto of this is that whilst transfer values look great it is not always preferable to move away from a guaranteed scheme unless it is right for you.

Alternatively, she was offered a pension transfer value of £191,362.57 which, when compared to what she would have if she took her tax free cash of £24,832.60 and a pension for life of £3,724.89 per annum, made a transfer highly favourable. By transferring she had access to tax free cash immediately, in excess of £45,000 and, more importantly, she can leave the balance invested and take an income when she does eventually retire. She was glad to hear that she did not have to take all of her tax-free cash in one go, and loved the fact that she could take what she needed now and then access the rest as required. www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

Spotlight on Wolves’ hat-trick

heroes

In addition to exhaustive statistics of every one of the hat-tricks, there will be interviews with several of the players who have hit three goals or more in Wolves colours, among them Steve Bull, John Richards, Ted Farmer, Bobby Gould, Ken Hibbitt, Terry Wharton and Colin Booth. The pair’s research has also found the player who scored the quickest hat-trick for Wolves – and, no, it was not Bull in his famous fourgoal flurry at Newcastle on New Year’s Day, 1990. Bully completed a hat-trick in nine minutes that day but a little-known Wolves player bettered that by three minutes as the book will reveal. There is a section on Wolves’ hat-trick men during wartime when Billy Wright was among those who scored three times in a game. Wartime matches, which were not counted in the official record books, also saw a Wolverhampton-born player score eight times in one game. That man was Jack Rowley, who, alas, was only ‘guesting’ for the Wolves, having made his name at Manchester United. The book will feature every match in which a Wolves player scored three goals or more and Steve and Clive hope their work will provide a comprehensive Wolves reference book.

Hat-trick men - Steve Gordos (right) and Clive Corbett by the statue of Billy Wright outside Molineux

It’s hats off to Tettenhall football writer Steve Gordos who is working on a new book. It will detail every player who has hit a hat-trick for the club. He has teamed up with Clive Corbett, who, like Steve, has written several books about Wolves. 26

Their combined efforts will detail the 186 hat-tricks scored in major competitions by Wolves players - as well as the occasion when the opposition kindly gave them three own goals!

They are also keen for fans to contact them with their memories of occasions when Wolves men hit hat-tricks. They can email any recollections to gpbooks@hotmail.co.uk

The collaboration will be published in time for the start of the next football season that will hopefully see their beloved team back where they belong – in the top flight. wolverhampton west magazine

RECIPE

Vanilla Panna Cotta with Raspberry Sauce

Preparation time: 1-2 hours Cooking time: 10-20 minutes Servings:

To serve • Sprigs of fresh mint and blueberries (optional) METHOD 1.

To make the panna cotta, soak the gelatine leaves in a little cold water until soft.

2.

Place the milk, cream, vanilla pod, scraped seeds and sugar into a heavybottomed pan and bring to a simmer. Remove the vanilla pod and discard.

3.

Squeeze the water out of the gelatine leaves, then add to the pan. Remove from the heat and stir until the gelatine has dissolved.

4 INGREDIENTS For the panna cotta • 3 gelatine leaves • 250ml/9fl oz milk • 250ml/9fl oz double cream • 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways, seeds scraped out • 25g/1oz sugar For the sauce • 175g/6oz sugar

4.

Divide the mixture between four pretty glass serving bowls and set aside to cool. Place into the fridge for at least an hour, until set.

5.

To make the sauce place the sugar, water and the splash

• 175ml/6fl oz water • Splash raspberry, cherry or blackcurrant liqueur • 350g/12oz raspberries 30

of liqueur into a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring until all the sugar has dissolved. 6.

Remove the pan from the heat and add the raspberries. Use a hand blender to blitz the sauce until smooth. Pass it through a sieve to remove the seeds.

7.

To serve, pour the sauce over the panna cotta and garnish with the blueberries and a sprig of mint.

Alternative serving method: Pour the panna cotta mix into oiled moulds rather than serving dishes, and set in the fridge as before. Blitz half the raspberries into the sauce and strain through the sieve, then stir in the remaining raspberries. When the panna cotta are set, dip the moulds in hot water for a few seconds and turn the panna cotta out on to a plate, spoon over the sauce and decorate with blueberries and mint. wolverhampton west magazine

lighTing YoUr home:

Accent Lighting: The most creative way of lighting, but not exactly for functional use. This type of light highlights key features to create drama and visual interest. For example, towards an item of furniture or a wall, hanging through the creation of contrasts in light and shadow. Wall washers and directional spotlights work with miniature decorative lamps to break up the uniformity of a room’s ambient lighting and add extra depth.

Why is it so important? Lighting has its own role to play in our daily lives, when it comes to decorating your home. With just the flick of a switch, you can change the whole atmosphere of a room. Before creating a lighting plan, it’s vital to know how light works in each room and what purpose it will carry. Task Lighting: Gives off a bright, focused light to one area or work

surface. It helps you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, preparing, and cooking food etc. Kitchens are the ideal place for task lighting as recessed downlights, LED strips and under-cupboard fittings can be placed for direct light to food prep areas. Another ideal place for task lighting is the study, created with desk lamps to help with reading or working. Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eye strain. Ambient Lighting: provides an area with overall illumination. Perhaps the most basic form of lighting, and one you’d expect to see in most homes. It imitates the effects of natural light, without glare and at a comfortable level. Ambience is achieved with most ceiling and wall fittings.

Interior design trends

2018 By Julia Kendell as interior design spokesperson for The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show

Bedrooms “The focus for the year ahead will be on functionality in the bedroom. For those who want to create more open space, it’s best to consider taking your clothing and storage out of this room to ensure a calm and relaxing place to relax and sleep. Consider converting an underused spare bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe.” “In addition, beds are viewed as the most important item in the bedroom as they contribute significantly to sleeping quality. Invest in a good quality mattress; it’s important to check if it can provide long-term care for the back and provide you with a good night’s sleep. Also, to wake up rested, a dark environment helps boost sleeping quality, so the choice of curtains or blinds is vital.” “Advances in sleep technology have developed to allow homeowners bespoke solutions to ensure a great night’s sleep. The latest ‘antigravity’ mattresses give the body an opportunity to heal overnight with no stressful strain on any joint. Skimping on comfort is a false economy and has a detrimental effect on all areas of life.”

Bathrooms “With life increasingly fast-paced, creating a spa-like retreat in the bathroom is high on the wish list for many. Pinterest has reported a 269 per cent increase in ‘spa bathroom’ searches in the past 12 months alone. To create a restful and recharging environment, plan a large bath for leisurely soaks and always try for comfort before purchase. A neutral scheme with natural materials such as marble or textural slate are a key theme for 2018. Ensure adequate storage to ensure a restful, uncluttered environment and upgrade the lighting to a dimmable circuit. Integral speakers in the bathroom will contribute to the bathing experience.”

Kitchens “Many self-builders have included a secondary ‘practical’ kitchen in recent years and this trend is likely to spiral further. Separating the real functional area from the show/theatre kitchen proves to be useful, as the house owner can leave the dirty dishes, trash

and everything else that comes with preparing a meal in the secondary kitchen, while enjoying a hassle-free social experience with friends in the main area, where cooking skills can shine.” “For 2018 materials and textures are key with combinations of gloss cabinetry and natural timber, matt door finishes and terrazzo tiling or two colours of cabinetry to add interest to a functional space. After many years of neutral kitchens, forest green, peacock blue and this year’s Pantone colour of the year, ultraviolet, will be showing up in design-led kitchens.”

Living room “For those with the space, a separate TV/cinema room is the antidote to the all-consuming, massive TVs overtaking any social interaction. This creates a calming area within the living room for good old-fashioned conversation by the fireplace. “ “Technology has again provided a solution for the aesthetics when incorporating a TV in a living room. Mirrored TVs look like elegant framed mirrors when the TV is off and instantly become highresolution screens when required.” “In addition, statement art is replacing gallery-style walls with super-sized images, providing a clean and powerful aesthetic.” Julia also suggests that, above everything, an interior should have soul, balance and feel comfortable to live in, tailored to each person’s liking. More important than following fashion is to decorate your own home with pieces and materials that make you feel good.

The Rotary Club of Wolverhampton

Young Musicians Hit The Right Notes Among its many community services, Rotary prides itself on the opportunities it provides for young people to develop their skills and demonstrate the important contribution they make to society. These include the Young Citizen project in which youngsters who have “gone the extra mile” for the benefit of others are recognised with a prestigious award. There are also opportunities for vocational based travel abroad, residential Young Leaders courses and a number of competitions such as Young Chef, Youth Speaks, Young Photographer and Technology Tournaments. One of the most popular of these is the National Young Musicians Competition. Young people up to the age of 17 across the country perform a wide variety of pieces in front of a panel of adjudicators for a maximum of 10 minutes. There are both vocal and instrumental categories, because Rotary recognises that the voice is as much a way to make music as is brass, woodwind, percussion and the piano. All of these talents were on display at the Wolverhampton Area round of the competition which took place at the Wolverhampton Music Hub on Sunday, 4th February and was supported by all the Rotary clubs in the area. These are the Rotary clubs of Bilston and Wolverhampton West, Sedgley and Wombourne, Stafford Knot, Tettenhall, Wednesfield, Willenhall, Wolverhampton, Wolverhampton St. George’s and The Wrekin. Thirteen local performers were involved, presenting the adjudicators with a very difficult task of selecting winners and 42

Jessica Harrison, vocal winner, with President Jane Cooper (Stafford Knot)

runners up to go forward to the next round of the competition. The standard of musicianship demonstrated by the youngsters in the national Rotary competition is such that currently, three past entrants have reached the final of this year’s BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition. At the Wolverhampton event, a capacity and appreciative audience was treated to songs ranging from ‘Anything Goes’ by Cole Porter to a traditional Irish folk song entitled ‘The Lark In The Clear Air’ and instrumental pieces ranging from Vivaldi’s ‘Sonata in E Minor’ to ‘The Theme From Schindlers List’ by John Williams. After much deliberation, adjudicators Simon Platford and Peter Edwards decided that the winning instrumentalist was cellist Angharad Daniel and the winning vocalist was Jessica Harrison. Runners up were Cameron Chin-See (trumpet) and vocalist Ella Morgan. Sixteen year old Angharad attends Wolverhampton Girls High School and is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tettenhall. Cameron, also 16, is sponsored by the Wednesfield Club and is a pupil at St. Peters Collegiate School.

Angharad Daniel, instrumental winner, with President Roger Webb (Tettenhall)

Jessica, sponsored by the Stafford Knot club, attends Birmingham Ormiston Academy, while fourteen year old Ella, a pupil at Wolverhampton Girls High School, is sponsored by Wolverhampton St. George’s Rotary club. Adjudicator Peter Edwards said after the competition “I thoroughly enjoyed the event, which is of such huge benefit to the youngsters taking part. The organisation of the event was brilliant and the youngsters taking part were just wonderful. This event is a very important focus for budding instrumentalists and singers in the city today and I cannot overstate how much the music hub/service values the support of Rotary for music in the city. Through events like this, the support of Rotary in all its guises, not just music, is tremendously important to our city.” This talented quartet will take with them the enthusiastic good wishes of Wolverhampton Rotarians, as they progress to the next stages of the competition. This will involve the District Final, also to take place at the Wolverhampton Music Hub at 3pm on 11th March and, hopefully, beyond that the Regional Final in South Wales in April and the National Final in Edinburgh in May. All the rounds are open to the public.

Rotary is the world’s largest voluntary service organisation, open to men and women of all ages. For further details visit www.rotarygbi.org, where enquirers will be directed to the local club. wolverhampton west magazine

treat your home to a professional clean Even though we all know that first impressions count many of us overlook the exterior appearance of our property. Dirty fascias, grimy conservatories and blocked gutters don’t just look unattractive; they also devalue your property. That’s why it’s important to regularly treat your home to a professional clean. Fortunately, the team at RC Cleaning are ready and waiting to transform your home. As owner, Richard Cotterill explains: “We undertake all aspects of exterior cleaning from top to bottom. We clean roofs, fascias, soffits, inside and outside of gutters, window frames and sills, garage doors, porches, conservatories and orangeries.” And the company also install Hedgehog Gutter Guards: “Many homeowners don’t realise just how problematic blocked gutters

can be and often don’t notice a problem until they’re overflowing.” When gutters become blocked water can get into the brickwork and cause damp problems in your home. “Well maintained gutters are essential, that’s why it’s so important to have them regularly cleaned out to keep them working effectively. Installing Hedgehog Gutter Guards prevents gutters from blocking.” Many homeowners have benefited from Richard’s cleaning services since he started the company in 2009.

“I’m really passionate about what I do and I take pride in my work. Cleaning is incredibly rewarding and I get real job satisfaction from seeing the transformation once a job is complete.” And the company also offer a professional carpet and upholstery cleaning service too.

“I’ve established a really good customer base over the eight years I’ve been in business and many of my clients have recommended my services to their friends and relatives.”

The business is accredited by Age Concern, which proves to highlight just how trustworthy and reliable Richard is.

It’s no surprise that RC has gone from strength to strength as Richard prides himself on the work he does for his clients.

“Homeowners can rest assured that whatever the job, they’ll receive only the best service when they use RC Cleaning.”

Outstanding Service at Tettenhall Windows & Conservatories

and muted ‘National Trust’ shades of oak, walnut and teak. And, we supply them all.”

Aldersley-based business, Tettenhall Windows & Conservatories is celebrating 20 years in business this year. Owned and run by Nathan Beddows, the company has become the first choice for discerning clients who are looking to find both quality products and unbeatable service. As Nathan explains: “The home improvement market has changed and the demand for more choice in both colours and designs of doors and windows is growing.” Meeting and exceeding customer requirements is all part of the company’s success and that’s why Nathan offers a fabulous range of replacement windows and composite doors, conservatories and orangeries. “Many people are now opting for stylish coloured PVC-U which is influenced by the timeless 46

Other increasingly popular colour choices include: chartwell green, clotted cream, biscuit, black and numerous shades of grey. “These hues are all becoming very fashionable alongside the traditional clean bright white.” And the company don’t just supply windows and doors: “We offer a complete home improvement service which incorporates everything from building and creating new kitchen extensions to designing and installing conservatories and orangeries.”

“Most window and conservatory companies just want to build a conservatory and leave you to sort out the rest, but it’s only when you start making improvements that you realise how much more needs to be done.” That’s why so many clients have been delighted to learn that the Tettenhall Windows team offer so much more than windows and doors. And, if you’re keen to update your windows and doors you’ll not only be improving the look of your property but saving money and helping the environment too.

Offering their customers free advice and taking care of all aspects of work on their behalf - including planning permission and building regulations as well as electrical and plumbing work – the company provide an exceptional service. “Our one-stop-shop means that we can do everything the homeowner requires, whether it’s laying luxury Karndean flooring, decorating or even landscaping the garden.” And, it’s this unique approach that’s proved to be a massive success. wolverhampton west magazine

“Replacing dated double glazing can help save money on heating bills and reduce the carbon footprint of a residence. We only supply A-rated energy-efficient products which can help save money from heating bills in the first year alone. They not only reflect heat back into the house, but also retain heat from solar gain.” The addition of a new front door to match your window frames will look amazing and the company supply an exclusive large range of timber core composite doors which add instant curb appeal to your home. “Why not look at replacing your old sliding patio door for a stylish on trend bi- folding door which we can offer in either UPVC or aluminium?” As homeowners look for ways to improve their living space many are choosing to add an Orangery. “Brick built structures are increasingly desirable and are replacing the traditional glass conservatory and as demand for large family kitchens grows, many people are opting to move their kitchen to their new orangery.” In fact, Tettenhall Windows can take care of that too:“We design, supply and install kitchens through our sister company, Bespoke Kitchens, that’s based within our premises.” If you’re working to a strict budget though, you can always let Tettenhall Windows transform your existing conservatory into a useable modern living space by removing its old polycarbonate roof and replacing it with an insulated warm tiled roof.

designed around our clients’ wants and dreams and we’re delighted to have so many satisfied customers.” Every installation is either fitted or constructed by the company’s own skilled team of professionals. “Whether I sell a window, a door, a kitchen or an orangery each installation is project managed by myself to ensure it all goes according to plan. I can’t stress enough how much pride we take in every project we undertake”. Tettenhall Windows don’t do gimmicks and you won’t find any buy-one-get-one-free deals, instead you’ll get an honest no-nonsense, no-obligation and competitive quotation from Nathan. So, it’s no surprise that Tettenhall Windows & Conservatories and Bespoke Kitchens boast satisfied customers across the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Shropshire. Martin Taylor from Tettenhall, recently employed the team to install an Orangery and undertake other works at his home and he was delighted with the results: “I was keen to extend my living space with the addition of an Orangery and improve the rear and side access at my property by joining my detached garage to my house. I also wanted to add a new internal staircase, extend the gas heating system and install a wood burning stove.

“Nathan not only provided a competitive price – that was fully inclusive and without hidden extras – but personally sourced a specialist staircase contractor, gas heating engineer and external renderer who worked efficiently to get the job done. “It was amazing to have Nathan project managing the job and taking such a hands-on approach that he even visited the property late one Friday evening to make safe a faulty external lock. “It was a large and complex project, not without problems and delays, but Nathan ensured there was great communication throughout. His dedicated approach and drive to ensure customer satisfaction - in all aspects undoubtedly sets his business apart from the competition. “I’m absolutely thrilled with the Orangery; it’s beautiful, stylish and practical. It’s not only enhanced our living space but added value to the property too. The other works carried out under Nathan’s supervision have been completed to a high standard and have made our home really functional. “We were incredibly impressed at every stage of the project – from planning through to completion – and would recommend Tettenhall Windows”. Whatever you’ve got planned for your home this spring, contact Tettenhall Windows today.

The company is proud of the work that they carry out and is always keen to offer customers the option to pay a visit to a completed job so that they can see the quality of work and also gain inspiration for their own project. “As a company we pride ourselves on giving old fashioned valuefor-money and excellent service, whatever the project we’re undertaking. West Midland

SafarI & LEISURE PARK ARRIVING SPRING 2018

WMSP.CO.UK Spring Grove, Bewdley, Worcs, DY12 1LF

Staff at West Midland Safari Park are preparing for their best year yet, as the attraction prepares to celebrate its 45th year. The busy schedule for 2018 includes celebrating the birthdays of animals born last year, an education partnership with art exhibit Worcester Stands Tall and the opening of their brand new prehistoric exhibit – Ice Age which is due to arrive in spring.

Continuing the journey from The Land of the Living Dinosaurs exhibit, the £1 million project will feature a huge volcano, ice cave and ferocious, life-sized animals, taking guests on an interactive exploration through time. Adventurers will be able to walk amongst a gigantic woolly mammoth, a fierce smilodon and an enormous paraceratherium, to name just a few. As well as the brand new exhibit, the Park is also the official Education Partner for Worcester Stands Tall – a public art exhibition of decorated giraffe sculptures due to be dotted around the streets of Worcester during the summer of 2018. The event, facilitated by Wild In Art and brought to the city by St Richard’s Hospice, will enable local schools and renowned artists to design and decorate the sculptures. Larger sculptures will eventually be auctioned off to raise money for the hospice.

The Park has also teamed up with award-winning studio Aardman for their prehistoric comedy movie, Early Man. Fans of the film will be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of parts of the set used in the movie inside

the ‘Early Man Secret Cave’, which will be at the Park until Easter. Celebrating their first birthdays, guests can see how much the gorgeous babies of 2017 have grown during the past year. Fennessy the Rothschild’s giraffe is now a staggering 10-feet-tall and is showing no signs of slowing down! Also on the Safari Drivethrough is beautiful baby Fahari, the second southern white rhino born at the Park within two years. Full of confidence and charisma, the healthy youngsters have been a great success for the longevity of both species, whose numbers are dramatically dropping in the wild.

West Midland Safari Park opens daily for its summer season from 10 February 2018. Standard admission charge is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children aged 3-15 and £22.00 for concessions. Admission includes a Free Return Ticket. Adventure Theme Park rides are charged extra. Further information and tickets are available from the park’s website at www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone on 01299 402114. You can find out more on the safari park’s official Facebook page: www.facebook. com/WestMidSafari.

We have teamed up with West Midland Safari & Leisure Park to give you the chance to win free admission tickets. The tickets entitle a family of four to visit on one occasion up to 9th November 2018. Theme Park rides not included.

To be in with a chance of winning this fabulous prize, simply answer the following question correctly… What is the name of the baby rhino born in 2017? Email your answer including your name, address and telephone number to: info@wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk or on a postcard to Wolverhampton West Magazine, 1 Lytham Road, Perton, Wolverhampton, WV6 7YY.

All entries to be received by Friday 20th April 2018. Competition Terms and Conditions - Winners will be chosen at random from all correct entries received. The ticket includes admission to the four-mile self-drive safari, Discovery Trail exhibits, animal encounters, African Village and live shows. Usual admission is £24.00 for adults, £19.00 for children and £22.00 for concessions. Children under 3 are admitted free of charge. No cash or alternative prize will be given. Prize valid until 9th November 2018.

I have been contacted a few times recently by concerned people who have been telephoned by someone claiming to be from Microsoft telling them they have detected a problem with their computer. New market turns into Bi-annual event Penkridge Market has announced that its new Children’s Market will now be a bi-annual event. The new event, which was held for the first time in April 2017, proved so popular with the public, the owners have now decided to hold it twice a year, the first of which will be on the 15th April. The Market, which will be entirely dedicated to children, features stall holders selling everything from nearly new children’s clothes to toys and handmade crafts. There will also be plenty of activities to keep the children amused. The event will run from 10am to 3pm, and with free admission for children and only £2 for

adults, it’s a fantastic-value day out for all the family. Kate Kingsley, who was the brain child behind the event said: “We were absolutely overwhelmed and delighted by the response we had to the event last year, so made the decision to turn it into a bi-annual event. Thousands of people attended and everyone seemed to really enjoy the day.” Kate is anticipating there will be over 60 stall holders, selling a variety of goods from clothes, toys and books to unique personalised hand-print jewellery and handmade wooden toys. The majority of stalls will be undercover in the indoor market,

58

making it a great day out whatever the weather. There will be lots of entertainment on offer including the all new Emergency Services Corner, mini Land Rover rides and book readings from Penkridge author Diane Pike. The Petting farm will be back with the chance for children to bottle feed lambs and there will be fun fair rides, inflatables and more. Local children’s clubs, groups and organisations will also be attending, so that families can find out more information about the services available in the local area. We still stock essential tools, seeds, compost etc… but also have a great range of indoor plants & pots. This year we’re also going to be stocking a wide range of fresh herbs. Everything

Prepare for the growing season

Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton

The weather should become milder as we move through March so it is the perfect time to get back out into the garden and start preparing for the season ahead. Weed and clean borders, then apply a general-purpose fertiliser before you add any mulches of compost or well rotted manure. If you have any lime hating (ericaceous) plants, such plants as Camellias, Rhododendrons and Azalea, make sure you use an ericaceous fertiliser as they require extra trace elements. Dead head bulbs particularly daffodils, leaving the green foliage on to send nutrients back to the bulb and top dress with fertiliser. This should give you a good display of flowers next year. Many of the summer flowering bulbs and tubers can be planted outside as the weather warms up

– Lilies, Canna, Pineapple flower and Summer Snowflakes. Always plant lily bulbs on their side so that water doesn’t lie in the scales and cause them to rot. Lilies, especially the newer Tree Lilies benefit from being started off in pots and planted outside once growing strongly. Dahlias should be started off in pots inside, then planted out once the danger of frosts has receded. Begonias should be pressed gently into potting compost, curved side down – never completely covered, water and keep on a light sunny windowsill or in a heated greenhouse. As the weather becomes increasingly mild, thoughts start turning to the lawn. We recommend that you use MO Bacter to help control moss. This is a slow release organic fertiliser for lawns, which now carries the RHS logo on the bag. It feeds the lawn over a 12-week period

and contains bacteria which are naturally found in the soil, which is added to an organic fertiliser, which digests the moss, making it unnecessary to rake or scarify after treatment. Aerate the lawn with a fork or spikes on shoes to improve drainage. Any bare patches can then be reseeded. Feed regularly throughout the growing season. Watch out for late frosts if you’ve got potatoes in tubs with plenty of leaf growth – always protect at night. Sow your first and second early potatoes followed by maincrops, again watching out for late frosts once the foliage appears.

tHe natural BENEfItS Of HeDGinG A key role for a garden designer is to advise on what kind of materials and plants are appropriate for your garden, and an element that shouldn’t be overlooked is the boundary or internal screening. The most commonly used options are wooden fences or trellis screens however, walls, railings and hedging can also be a good alternative. Wherever possible I like to explore the possibility of using a suitable hedge, evergreen, semi evergreen or deciduous because it can create a really beautiful garden backdrop, while also offering protection from the elements, privacy and habitat for wildlife, not to mention security.

on the style of garden you wish to create, a hedge can be used in many ways; to provide a warm natural atmosphere in a country garden, soften the surroundings of a city garden or add structure to a modern garden. A hedge can also be a useful screen for those areas you might want to hide from view in your garden. Plus, what many people don’t realise is that you can buy hedging in all growth forms, from 1 year old whips that are about as thick as a pencil up to a fully mature 2.0 meter hedge in a choice of varieties according to your garden aspect

Natural hedging also suits properties of all ages and size, creating both a traditional or contemporary style. Dependent

and soil condition. Available varieties include native, exotic, flowering, ever-green and fruit bearing. In terms of upkeep (one of the biggest questions), all hedging will require some form of maintenance, at the very least pruning, but it will depend on the varieties you choose (and for me a twice yearly clip outweighs the chore and expense of painting a fence). Our advice would be to do your research before you buy or contact our award-winning garden design team for help.

THE BEST TIME TO PLANT HEDGING The optimum hedge planting season runs from November through to March/April, at this time of year you can also buy your hedging plants more cost effectively as bare root or rootballed, depending on the variety and the size you are looking for. Containerised options are also available year round.

A mAnuAl of YoU!

When you buy a piece of electrical equipment, it comes with a manual to explain what it is, how to use the controls, how to get the best from it and, possibly more important, what NOT to do with it!

In short - a manual of them.

Unfortunately, the most unique piece of electrical equipment you will ever use, never came with a manual or care instructions – your brain. You have had to muddle along through life, picking up hints and tips along the way, and working out for yourself how to use this intricate machine. If that wasn’t bad enough, it comes with a couple of comedians called conscious mind and unconscious mind; they’re a hoot when they get going! How different would your life be, if you had a manual of YOU? It would explain about why you do the things you do, behave the way you behave and how to make changes to improve your life. When I take on a coaching client, this is exactly what we create together. I work with that person to help them ask questions of themselves that will root out the behaviours, thoughts and beliefs that are deep seated within their system. It’s a fascinating journey for both of us; I never know quite what we will discover. It’s a journey that often contains light bulb moments and tears; joy as well as sadness.

If you have been reading previous articles, coaching may not have been something that you recognised as part of my job. When I work with someone who has an issue, it’s often more involved than just one thing. If it has been impacting on those around them, my client may need some help to recognise this and how to repair situations or relationships that the issue had made difficult. It’s also worth mentioning that coaching isn’t just for professionals and business people. If you want to learn something new, you find a teacher or expert to show you what to do. If life isn’t working for you, you feel stuck, bored or without purpose, exploring opportunities with an expert is just good old common sense! A great tool for looking at different aspects of your life is called The Wheel of Life. It’s a classic coaching tool and you can find lots of examples on Google. If your not sure if it’s the right one, just email me (contacts below) and I will send you a PDF you can use.

As the name suggests, it’s a wheel, with different sections. Name your sections to suit the areas of life that are relevant to you; Home, Work, Family, Social etc and don’t forget to put YOU in a section! Number the spokes 1 – 10, with ten (rim of wheel) being very happy and 1 (centre point) being not good at all. Give thought to each section and how you feel about this part of your life. Draw a line in each section at the level you feel is appropriate. When you have filled all sections, join them up, how bumpy is your life? This highlights areas to improve and areas that are ok. If you want to use this as a guide to creating a better life, choose only two areas at a time, or you will overwhelm yourself and give up.

“If you think your life has lost its sparkle, or you feel something is missing, maybe there is something holding you back, stopping you from seeing things clearly. If this is you, it may help to share that with someone and get tools and techniques to make the changes you didn’t feel capable of doing on your own. I specialise in helping people clear personal blocks and issues that stop them from living a life of fun and fearlessness.” Sue Wilkinson

What do I do? I work with issues that stem from unconscious habits and behaviours. I coach my clients through processes that help them find a solution and guide them towards a brighter future.

Switching your ISA is easy, so why don’t more people do it? Are people missing out by not switching their ISA? We swap our car and home insurance every year, and even our current accounts can be switched within 7 days – so why does the 5th April (end of the tax year for permitted ISA subscriptions) not make it in to our diaries? It’s possibly a perception that there are 100 forms or a list of hoops that must be jumped through before your ISA could be considered for transfer from one provider to another. That’s a myth! In the most part, a couple of short forms are all it takes and the provider you are transferring to takes care of everything, they even contact the existing provider. Dudley Building Society requests are progressed within 24 hours from receipt so it won’t be long until the transfer is complete and you are ready to continue to save in the 18/19 tax year. The range of ISAs available across the market provide many choices for individuals with different financial circumstances, so no one should be afraid to go and discuss the possibilities with their local bank or building society. In most cases, and especially in that of Dudley Building Society, there are friendly, knowledgeable advisers that are on hand and happy to discuss what accounts may be best suited to someone’s specific saving requirements. The Society’s ISA range includes a 45 day notice, one and five year fixed, instant access and junior account options as well as loyalty ISAs for existing Society members.

ISA Application and ISA Transfer Authority forms can be downloaded at www.dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk/savings If you would like some more information on the above you can speak to one of our friendly Customer Service Advisers at Dudley Building Society on 01384 231414 or visit dudleybuildingsociety.co.uk

Davenport House

Standing proudly amid acres of rolling parkland, Davenport House has been part of the Shropshire countryside for centuries. In more recent times, this country house in picturesque Worfield has been a romantic and elegant setting for weddings and the latest custodians, Elizabeth and Joseph, have made it their mission to take Davenport House to the next level. Dating back to 1726, this Georgian mansion was once the home of William Davenport and comes with a history of love. Following a forbidden romance, William married Jane Bromley and their grandson, Henry, commissioned Francis Smith to design Davenport House as we know it today. Full of traditional grandeur and character, this remarkable house has recently undergone an incredible transformation to make it one of the standout wedding venues in the area. Since taking charge of this stunning setting, Elizabeth and Joseph have worked tirelessly to renovate each aspect of Davenport House. The Great Hall, a spectacular setting for wedding ceremonies at the front of the house, features cool grey walls that highlight the house’s past while providing a contemporary

accompaniment to the impressive painting and intricate plasterwork. The Drawing Room has had its elegance fully restored, combining an authentic feel with exquisite views of the venue’s tranquil grounds and hidden garden. The old stables are just a few steps from the front door and now provide the perfect space to prepare before tying the knot. The cast iron hay racks remain, but sit alongside comfy sofas, a well-equipped kitchen, plenty of mirrors and everything that a couple could need in the build-up to their ceremony. The grounds also hold a handful of private and peaceful cottages that will offer guests a wonderful night’s stay after the celebrations have drawn to a close. A wander up the ornate staircase reveals a collection of beautifully furnished bedrooms, each with their own style and unique features. Huge beds, inviting sofas and chic décor make each one a joy to spend the night in. With views over the idyllic pond and secluded grounds, they sum up everything that makes Davenport House a truly special wedding venue. award-winning stylist, Sophie Bagnall, ties the knot

Photograph supplied by Alex Styles Photography

The award-winning team at Royston Blythe had a different reason to celebrate at the end of 2017, as the salon’s Artistic Director - and twice joint winner of Midlands Hairdresser of the Year - Sophie Beattie married her partner, Fraser Bagnall, in a lavish ceremony that was held on Friday 29th December at Solihull’s beautiful Hogarths Hotel. Surrounded by family and friends - including of course, Nick and Royston - Sophie and Fraser tied the knot to the delight of everyone at the ceremony. Wearing a stunning white gown, Sophie – who’s worked at the salon for 18 years and shares her competition success with Nick - looked absolutely incredible. 70

One of the first to congratulate Sophie on her nuptials when she made her return to the salon as Mrs Bagnall, was our Sales Director – and Royston Blythe regular - Gisella Wiley. “I’m really delighted for Sophie and Fraser and I wish them lots of happiness in the future. Sophie looked absolutely beautiful on her big day. She is a fabulous stylist and it’s no surprise that she won the title of Midlands Hairdresser of the Year - along with Nick – twice in three years,” says Gisella. Indeed, her success has only confirmed her passion for hairdressing, dedication to her clients and her desire to create fabulous hair. Sophie is always busy, both in and out of the salon and travels across the country taking part in competitions, catwalk shows, exhibitions and session styling. And, in her work as an L’Oreal Ambassador, Sophie teaches

hairdressing trends and product knowledge to other salons across the UK. She also acts as a spokesperson for the brand. She has styled for top designer shows at London Fashion Week, and appeared on stage at Salon International. Sophie’s competition career has seen her achieve success in the L’Oreal Colour Trophy for an outstanding four consecutive years, and she has been nominated as a finalist in the British Fellowship FAME team. In addition she has been selected by L’Oreal as an ID Artist three times consecutively – an unusual feat. It’s clear that Sophie is at the top of her game and there’s no doubt that there is plenty more success on the horizon. When she’s not working though Sophie will be busy enjoying married life with Fraser. Congratulations to the happy couple from all of us at Wolverhampton West Magazine. wolverhampton west magazine

3 Hammers Bar & Bistro by Geoff Hall

Golf is a game that’s taken very seriously. Worldwide, players of all ages and abilities lovingly nurture their God given talent hoping they’ll one day make the perfect round; come in under par… beat their friends. I’m no different. For me, this Saturday is like so many others that have gone before it: up at the crack of dawn, eager to sneak in a crafty few holes before I begin my weekend routine. I leave the course vaguely satisfied – as anyone who has turned in yet another below par effort ever can be – but heavy with frustration; I could have performed better. If anything I’m keen to go straight back out there. It’s an itch every player feels and usually fails to scratch. Next Saturday, it seems, can never come soon enough. Happily however this Saturday I’m in luck because tonight I’m going

to 3 Hammers Golf Complex on the outskirts of Coven to check out the Bar & Bistro I’ve been hearing so much about. But don’t worry: you don’t need to be golfmad or even a member of the club in order to eat here – tonight I’m definitely going without golf clubs, with my partner Gisella. 3 Hammers Bar & Bistro is an independent restaurant situated at the heart of the award-winning golf complex. It is now under new management and is led by owner Shaun Timmins – an experienced food industry veteran who for

the last few years has worked at Miller & Carter Steakhouse in Penn – and Restaurant Manager Astrid Walker, who’s been working here for five years. We arrive and are greeted warmly by Astrid who asks us if we’d like drinks first. Of course we take her up on the offer. We sit in the vibrant bar area. I’m pleased to see some proper Real Ale up for grabs (not a guarantee in a lot of restaurants!) and go for a pint of Holden’s Golden Glow: a refreshing golden ale brewed using the finest English malts and choicest hops. The label on the pump reads ‘Black Country Born and Brewed’ – no wonder it appeals to me. Gisella drinks Bacardi and Coke. Not my cup of tea, but each to their own. A new menu has just been launched at the restaurant and it caters well for everyone – even vegetarians. It’s a very family-friendly and welcoming atmosphere, which can be enjoyed whether you’re a golfer or not. Looking at a lot of tonight’s crowd I’d say that the majority are among the latter. We reach the restaurant and find a superb conservatory and outdoor eating area and breathe in a mouth-watering aroma of freshly cooked traditional food.

78

wolverhampton west magazine

3 Hammers Bar & Bistro sources all of its meat and chicken from a Wolverhampton-based butcher. Ahh, that explains a lot: you just can’t beat buying local. We both opt for steaks next. I order a ‘12oz rib-eye’ (£16.95) to be cooked ‘medium’ and Gisella plumps for an ‘8oz sirloin’ (£13.95), to be cooked ‘well done.’ Both steaks are tender, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. A fine advert for what can be achieved with solid raw ingredients and a flash of culinary flair from the 3 Hammers’ ace kitchen team. The tried and tested complement of grilled flat mushrooms, tomato, onion rings, salad and upgraded (£1) sweet potato fries sets things off delightfully. We choose a bottle of Malbec to further enhance the occasion. During our meal both Astrid and waitress Natalie visit to check if everything is going to plan. I resist the temptation to answer with “you’ll find out when I turn in my review” for fear of being labelled a bit silly. The service tonight is entirely excellent, we never feel rushed in between courses or wait too long. We’re too full to have a dessert each but fall victim to Natalie’s recommendation of ‘Lemony Delight’ (£5.45) – a light, refreshing note on which to end. We resolve to come back very soon – if not for the ever-popular non-carvery Sunday lunch (£9.95), then for the Tom Jones tribute night on 30th March.

The place is buzzing with diners: a mixture of large groups, families, and couples all contribute to a pleasant ambience. I order ‘Chicken and Chorizo Skewers with roasted pepper and smoky tomato dressing’ (£6.45) to start. Gisella goes for ‘Buffalo Chicken Wings glazed in BBQ sauce, served with blue cheese dip’ (£5.95). Neither are large enough to detract from the mains but ample unto themselves. The tomato dressing is sumptuous, lavishing a layer of exceptional flavour on to an already spicy dish. Gisella enjoys her choice very much. Both of us remark upon the quality of the poultry – definitely a cut above. It turns out that

The Cowshed

P a t t in g h a m

By Rob Taylor It’s hard to know where to start with this place. To say that it’s hard to find and hidden away is silly in a digital age where even my Granny has a smartphone. To call it Pattingham’s best kept secret is to overplay my hand: a lot of people know about – and love – The Cowshed. So instead I’ll say this: The Cowshed deserves its formidable reputation for fine food.

to the door. Darkness has already descended upon us and with an icy chill in the air we hustle towards the entrance. Despite a substantial dining area outside, no one dares to brave the dank February weather. I don’t blame them. Our previous visit to The Cowshed happened to coincide with one

of the hottest days of 2017: that evening we languished outside for some time after our meal, basking in the warmth of the setting sun while sipping from as much of the restaurant’s top notch selection of wines, beers, spirits and liqueurs from around the world as was responsibly possible.

True to its name, it stands on the site of the former Clive Farm Dairy on Clive Road. In order to find the restaurant my partner Nicola and I veer off a quiet country lane, drive beneath a brick archway and into a courtyard where there is ample parking. The car park is level and you can park really close 82

wolverhampton west magazine

As ever we are given a friendly welcome from owner Will Guy and escorted to our table. Occupying a choice corner position, we set about checking out the sympathetically restored restaurant space. A wellexecuted mix of contemporary meets trad-rural is my best effort. It’s kinda rustic. An intimate number of tables sit beneath some fantastic exposed ceiling beams. There’s quirkiness on the walls in the way of cartoon cows yet, refreshingly, the restaurant isn’t trying too hard to be hip. Music is chilled – I think I heard Frank Sinatra. We’re among the first to arrive (the restaurant opens tonight at 6.30pm) but we don’t feel awkward or out of place. Even though it’s a Wednesday night, I’m convinced the place will soon start to fill up – and it certainly does! Many diners come and go as we eat our way through three courses, which gives a pleasant buzz to the place. We order drinks, then we receive The Cowshed’s customary complimentary cups of soup – tonight it’s ‘Broccoli and Stilton’. Now I can’t speak for my girlfriend Nicola (who had already ordered soup for her starter!), but I appreciate this delicate amuse bouche. As well as this we both appreciate the subtle, faintly romantic ambience afforded to us by the low-lighting and overall snugness of the place. It’s interesting how the shifting seasons can create an entirely different mood: neither of us can remember quite the same cosiness on our last visit, which I can only attribute to the inclement conditions outside. Seasons, of course, matter a great deal to the kitchen in a restaurant such as this. Head chef Joe Whitehouse creates imaginative, modern British dishes, bursting with locally sourced ingredients all year round, but on the menu right now there’s much in the way of what I’d call hearty wintry favourites. ‘Roasted parsnip and apple soup with parsnip crisps and crispy croutons’ (£5.50) is Nicola’s choice; I go for ‘Breaded brie with cranberry compote’ (£6.50). My brie has been heated to optimum consistency, like creeping lava it makes its way from inside its breaded shell. The compote offsets its savoury flavour well and fizzes on my palate. Nicola’s soup balances its flavours well and

is generously thick. And I should know: I couldn’t resist a taste. Service flows well, our waitress clearly knows the menu well and nothing is too much trouble. There’s a good amount of time between each course, we never feel like we’re waiting for anything for too long. The mains arrive and it’s soon safe to say that our high expectations and fond memories from our previous visit have certainly been exceeded. Nicola receives a substantial prime cut of ‘8oz English fillet steak (£26.95) served with hand-cut chips, roasted vine tomatoes, pan fried mushrooms, crispy onion rings and a peppercorn sauce. Having it served medium rare, she tells me, is an excellent choice because it allows the meat to be loaded with flavour. ‘Pan roasted Gressingham duck breast with dauphinoise potatoes, braised red cabbage and a rich port jus (£19.25) is my choice. I’m not disappointed: in fact suffice it to say that this dish is a triumph of textures and flavour, a

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

show of bravura from a well-oiled kitchen team. Expertly seasoned and cooked, the meat is tender and flavoursome without being overegged. The almost caramelised red cabbage is amazing too. To round things off, we try ‘Cowshed cherry and amaretto cheesecake with cherry crumble ice cream’ (£6.50) and ‘Cowshed rich chocolate tart with salted caramel ice cream’ (£6.50), both of which go down well. Every plate, every morsel, every mouthful at The Cowshed is thoughtful, made with love and care, seasoned and flavoured to perfection, and presented like a piece of art. It is one of the best meals I have eaten – ever. The Cowshed Restaurant, Clive Farm, Pattingham, Wolverhampton WV6 7DU. For table bookings please call 01902 701888. www.thecowshedrestaurant.co.uk

Find your new season look aT 90

wolverhampton west magazine

Spring is here and there’s never been a better time to update your style with an amazing new cut and colour look.

“A classic bob never goes too far from the radar and this season we love the longer length bob that is super versatile, multifunctional and can be adapted to suit every occasion.

Whether you’ve got a style in mind or are unsure of where to start, you’ll want to hear what the experts at award-winning salon, Royston Blythe, have to say before you book your appointment.

“The end result will be determined by the colour you choose. For those who like their hair to make a statement, consider icy platinum tones – think Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley at the Tom Ford Show - or strong global colours. If you wish for a more subtle look, speak with your colourist about how they can incorporate soft tones using babylights or a root stretch technique - Alexa Chung’s a fan.”

So, to bring you all the advice that you need, we caught-up with Nick.

Tailor trends to you Passionate about creating looks to suit the individual, Nick believes that every trend and fashion-focussed look should be completely tailored to suit you. As he explains: “You can adapt your look to reflect a seasonal trend but it is most important to remember that you need to create a look that is completely suited to enhancing your personal features and complementing your sense of style. “Never assume that just because a colour or style looks good on the catwalk or the celebrity of the moment that it is going to look as good on you. You need professional advice from specialists who are trained to help you look the best version of yourself.” And a good haircut can have amazing results: “We love to embrace the individual features, complexions, personalities and desires of all our clients and then create a bespoke cut and colour.”

Mid-length is the new long For spring/summer 2018 midlength styles are a must.

“To keep a look personalised to you, ask for soft layers that will frame your face and add a modern twist using colour - your hairdresser should tailor your colour to ensure you achieve a unique look. This season’s ‘Lob’ calls for tousled texture.

Opt for a crop Whatever your age, your face shape and your style, there is a short elfin-like crop to suit you. Here’s how to find it: “Katie Holmes has very recently revolutionised her look for spring and hit the front page headlines after ditching her classic bob for a quirky, super-short pixie crop. Indeed, the power of a hair transformation can be incredible, so it’s important to visit a hairdressing specialist that can use expert colouring and faceshaping techniques to ensure that your new short hairstyle will enhance your best features. “Texture, sweeping fringes and soft, face-framing layers will keep your style looking ultra-feminine and flattering. High impact blondes and statement reds are a perfect match with an iconic pixie crop, and this season there is an abundance of beautiful and striking blonde tones to choose from.”

Time for some TLC If your hair is in need of some TLC head straight to the salon. “An in-salon treatment will serve to nourish, hydrate and condition

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

your hair, ready for the summer months that are fast approaching. Olaplex is an amazing treatment that can be added on to your colour treatment or used alone. It repairs the bonds within the hair shaft and the result is super shiny, silky tresses.”

Turn up the volume Hair extensions don’t just add length, they can be used to create a voluminous look and, they offer colour without chemicals too. “We love Rapture’s tape-in hair extensions as they’re quick and easy to fit and cause absolutely no damage to the hair.”

Make an investment Look after your new look with the help of some fabulous products. “When you visit your hairdresser for a beautiful colour, it’s very important that you invest in prescribed home care products that will ensure your hair colour is long-lasting, protected and able to keep your locks wellnourished,” adds Nick. So, why not say goodbye to tired tresses and hello to luxurious locks with the help of the Royston Blythe team this spring?

Cycle Challenge 2018 “They’ll be a DJ on the starting line, refreshments served en route, coffee and cakes in Ironbridge, as well as a family barbeque at the end of the event.” Ensuring that everyone has a great time is really important to Chris. “The Cycle Challenge is not a race. It’s a fun event and an opportunity to enjoy cycling in a group and to raise money for a great cause. Plus, you’ll even be rewarded with a medal at the end of it.” And, it doesn’t even matter whether you make the finish line or not.

Whether you’re a keen cyclist or just starting out, there’s no doubt that you’ll be keen to take part in the Chris Jewkes Fitness Cycle Challenge 2018.

“There will be pick-up wagons in operation for those who choose to end the challenge early. Motorcycle outriders will be supporting the event and Fred Williams Cycles will be offering mechanical help along the way.” Last year’s event was an incredible success, with 75 riders in attendance and Chris is expecting numbers to reach 100 this time. “We surveyed those who participated last time and 100% of them said they’d do it again,” adds Chris. So, why not sign up for the challenge today?

The fun charity event – that’s taking place on Sunday 3rd June and raising money for testicular cancer – has been designed to offer something for everyone, as Chris explains: “We’re offering riders a choice of two carefully planned, fully sign posted routes that begin in the heart of Tettenhall – at our fitness centre - and take riders through miles of beautiful countryside to Shrophire’s Ironbridge Gorge.” The highly successful event, that’s returning for the second year, has been carefully planned by Chris and provides both a 60 mile and 25 mile challenge. “I wanted to offer something that was appealing to both serious cyclists and those who ride for fun or who are just starting to get into the sport.” Inspired by his own experiences of cycle events, Chris was keen to create an exciting and well-planned event. “I started getting into cycling following a major knee injury several years ago and began attending cycle events across Europe. Despite enjoying taking part, I noticed how poor the organisation was at many events.” Not only does Chris Jewkes Fitness Centre offer the perfect starting point, thanks to its proximity to splendid countryside, it also provides riders with excellent on-site facilities. 94

ONE STOP BREAST CARE CLINIC A same day self referral breast clinic is now available privately twice a week at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. People who notice changes can be referred to the One Stop Breast Clinic to have the results from both a specialist consultation and imaging on the same day. Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK, with 31% of all cancers diagnosed in women being breast cancer. Survival from the disease has been improving over time as a result of both early detection and improvements in treatment. Now approximately three out of four women diagnosed with breast cancer are alive 10 years later. However about 12,000 women in the UK still die from breast cancer every year. A ‘One-Stop’ integrated breast clinic is now available at the Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital. Private patients can be seen for a specialist consultation, which includes a mammogram and an ultrasound for a package price of £495. Usually the results of the imaging and consultation are all explained at one visit. Using the latest Full Field Digital Mammography unit, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital offers the One Stop Breast Clinic twice a week with consultant oncoplastic

surgeons Mrs Pilar Matey and, recently joined, Mr Tapan Sircar and consultant radiologist Dr Marie Metelko. Other consultant colleagues include Mr Brian Isgar and Mr Seni Mylvaganam and specialist nursing, haematology and imaging staff. All tests and assessments are carried out in accordance with the latest National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines. The results are discussed with the patient and time is taken for any queries to be explained. Radiology Manager, Lucy Willcox, explains,”We’re really excited to launch this new One-Stop breast clinic. Patients who are concerned about changes in their breasts can see a specialist breast consultant, have the appropriate imaging done and in most cases receive their results on the same day.” Breast cancer starts when the cells in the breast begin to grow in an uncontrolled way and build

up to form a lump, also known as a tumour. As the cancer grows, cells can spread to other parts of the body and this can then become life-threatening. The one stop service at Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital follows the most recent guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). If you have any changes to your breast, you should make an appointment to see your GP straight away. You may not have cancer but if you do, being diagnosed and treated at an early stage may mean that you are more likely to survive breast cancer. Being breast aware is about being conscious of how your breasts normally look and feel at different times of the month and checking them regularly. For more information or to make an appointment with the One Stop Breast Clinic direct, please ring: 01902 793269 In 2018, Nuffield Health Wolverhampton Hospital celebrates 40 years in Tettenhall. Over the same period, since 1978, Cancer Research UK has helped double cancer survival rates.

grEaT lOOKiNg lEgS FoR ThE SummER If you have varicose veins and want great looking legs for the summer, now is the time to act. Having these assessed and treated has never been easier. The Vein Clinic, led by Mr Simon Hobbs, Consultant Vascular Surgeon, treats the vast majority of varicose veins as walk-in, walk-out procedures, under local anaesthetic, with greatly enhanced recovery compared to traditional surgical treatments. The clinic, situated in the Wolverhampton Nuffield Hospital, uses the latest in medical technology to diagnose and treat the veins that are the underlying cause of unsightly and symptomatic varicose veins. Mr Hobbs is the only surgeon in the West Midlands currently offering the VenaSeal Closure system, alongside other popular treatments such as Radiofrequency ablation, enabling people to have their veins treated with minimal discomfort.

If veins are left untreated, they can lead to bleeding, eczema, phlebitis, brown skin discolouration and potentially leg ulcers, which take a long time to heal.

VenaSeal uses a medical grade super glue to seal off the damaged veins and as it involves fewer injections in the leg this treatment means that you can be quickly back to full activity enjoying the benefits of healthy feeling and great looking legs.

During a consultation, an ultra sound scan will be performed to detect the source of the problem and from the size and position, indicate the required treatment.

Varicose veins are caused by a malfunction of valves in the veins which causes blood to pool and result in painful and unsightly bulges at the skin’s surface. Symptoms include aching, itching, swelling, throbbing and restless legs at night, with both men and women being affected equally.

Recognised by all major Medical Insurers. For self-paying patients, the consultation fee is £150 and an ultrasound of both legs is £99. For further information visit www.simonhobbsveins.co.uk

What would happen

if I broke my hip?

Unfortunately, the risk of breaking your hip increases as you get older. In 2016, 65000 patients aged over sixty sustained a hip fracture in the UK, a figure which is on an upward trend. As people grow older their bones become weaker due to a process called osteoporosis. This process affects women more than men and causes a reduction in the amount of calcium in every bone, which makes them more susceptible to breaking. A simple trip and stumble at home, which in earlier life would have been insignificant, can in later years cause fragile bones to break, in particular the hip bone. Immediately, after falling and breaking your hip it will be extremely painful and you will not be able to get up off the floor. If you live alone it is important to have a ‘alert’ device which is with you all the time to raise the alarm. The main priority is to call an ambulance.

On arrival in the A&E department initial treatment will be as follows; A drip will be put in your arm to give you some fluids and intravenous painkillers. Some blood will be taken from your arm and sent to the laboratory to assess various bodily functions e.g.: kidneys. A tracing of your heart (ECG) is undertaken to make sure it is working as it should be. Your pulse and blood pressure is monitored and when comfortable x-rays of your hip will be taken to confirm it is broken, following which, you will be transferred from A&E to an orthopaedic ward.

How would my broken hip be treated? There is undisputable evidence that your best outcome after breaking your hip is to have it operated on as soon as possible after the injury. After operation, within 24 48 hours, you are able to get out of bed and start walking with a Zimmer frame and assistance from the physiotherapists, progressing onto crutches as you become more confident. Early mobilising reduces your chances of acquiring 112

chest infections, pressure sores and deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

What operation will I have?

Fig 1: The hip is broken in the ‘Intertrochanteric area’.

When the hip bone breaks it does so in either of two different ways and that dictates what operation would be most appropriate. In Figure 1, you can see both the normal hip joint and the broken hip with the break in an area of the hip bone called the ‘Intertrochanteric area’. This break requires fixation with a ‘plate and screw system’, as shown in Figure 2. The other way of breaking your hip is when the break is closer to the ball of the hip joint. This area of the hip bone is called the ‘Neck’. This is shown in Figure 3. Unfortunately, when the bone breaks in the neck area it damages all the blood vessels which supply nutrients to the ball of the hip and so the ball of the hip joint cannot survive and must be removed and replaced with an artificial ball, as shown in Figure 4. The artificial ball can be part of a ‘half hip’ replacement, which is the preferred operation in more elderly patients (see Fig 4) or a total hip replacement, which is carried out on more active individuals, who have sustained this injury.

Fig 2: Hip fixed with ‘plate and screw system’.

Fig 3: The hip is broken in the ‘Neck’ area.

Will I get better after my operation? There is no doubt that sustaining a broken hip is a significant trauma to your body. The younger and fitter you are, the more likely you are to have a better outcome. However, the hard facts confirm that of all patients who have broken their hip, within 30 days and one year of injury, the chances of dying are approximately 7% and 30% respectively. Avoidance of this injury goes without saying is the best option!

Fig 4: Ball replaced with a ‘half hip’ replacement.

Mr David Simpson is part of the Trauma team at New Cross. He performs Total Hip Replacements on younger, fitter patients who need the ball of the hip replacing. On occasions, at the request of the patient, he has performed this surgery at the Nuffield Hospital, Wolverhampton, following transfer of the patient from New Cross hospital. wolverhampton west magazine

hoW EXERCISE BENEFITS ouR

M i N d, b O dY a N d S O u l Exercise – some love it, some loathe it, and to some it’s a necessary task. But exactly how does exercise make us healthy – not just from a physical perspective, but mentally and emotionally too? Paycare, a not-for-profit Health Cash Plan provider based in Wolverhampton, is passionate about supporting those across the region to benefit from optimum health and wellbeing in all areas. And with research suggesting that many adults spend more than seven hours a day sitting down either at work, on transport, or in their leisure time, the organisation has put together some valuable practical advice and guidance on the subject of exercise… 1. Reduces Likelihood of Major Illnesses | It can reduce our risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even cancer by up to 50%! And, it can lower the risk of premature death by up to 30%. (1) 2. Improves our Bone and Muscle Strength | Being physically active (and this can be as simple as walking) can improve our bone and muscle strength, and as a result, reduces the risk of falls and fractures, protects against osteoarthritis, as well as acting as a pain relief for musculoskeletal disorders. 3. Makes us Feel Happy | Exercising has been shown to increase concentrations of the chemical norepinephrine in the body – which moderates the brain’s response to stress. 4. Prevents Dementia | All forms of physical exercise boost the chemicals in the brain that support and prevent degradation of the hippocampus. In fact, researchers (2) have found that walking for just 20 minutes a day boosts memory and improves overall brain function. 5. Provides a Better Night’s Sleep | Exercising can make us physically worn-out in the short-term, but you’ll benefit from a much deeper night’s sleep – and feel well-rested 114

so that you’re alert and raring to go the next morning! 6. Helps us Become More Focused | A study by the University of Bristol (3) found that employees who exercised before work or at lunchtime were more motivated and were able to deal with stress more effectively. 7. Helps Us Lose Weight | There are links between the carrying of excess weight and the onset of type 2 diabetes, development of heart conditions and other serious illnesses, not to mention increased pressures on our joints and bones. Exercising pumps more oxygen into our blood, with our hearts in particular one of the best recipients. Kevin Rogers, CEO of Paycare, explained: “These are just a few of the benefits that exercise can bring to our health - emotionally, physically and mentally. Whether you’re currently sedentary and want to get more active, or you currently indulge in regular exercise but want to improve your fitness level, there’s no time like the present to start making a positive difference. “We also know that while this all sounds great, our lives are very busy and often see us pulled in many different directions – whether it’s work, children, family, or emergencies. And, it isn’t usually at the top of our list of priorities either, so it’s no wonder that many of us struggle to fit it in amongst our other commitments.”

• Do some sit-ups, a plank, or tricep dips on the sofa while the adverts are on the TV • At work, stand up every hour and walk around the office (and see colleagues face-to-face!) • Encourage ‘walking meetings’ at work • Walk up and down the stairs 10 times – just because! • Park the car further away than you normally would • Whilst cooking or waiting for the microwave to ping, do some jumping jacks, lunges, or jog on the spot • While the kettle is boiling, why not add some squats? • Add a stability ball to your desk chair (it’ll strengthen your core muscles) • Take calls standing up The Paycare team has developed a guide focused on the benefits of walking – if you fancy a free copy, please email marketing@paycare.org (1) NHS Live Well | https://www.nhs.uk/ Livewell/fitness/Pages/whybeactive.aspx (2) Journal of Alzheimer’s disease (3) Bristol Study | http://www.bristol. ac.uk/news/2008/6063.html

Is my vision good enough for driving? Studies suggest that up to one in five middle aged drivers are taking to the road knowing their eyesight is not as good as it should be.

Even a small prescription with a good quality antireflective coating or specific glare reducing lenses, such as EnRoute, can make night driving much more comfortable. Designed specifically for motorists these lenses, either single vision or varifocal, have specifically developed glare filters and optional contrast enhancing filters to significantly reduce glare from oncoming traffic and enhance contrast in low light conditions, like rain and fog.

It is just common sense to ensure that your eyesight is good enough to enable you to drive safely. If it isn’t, you may be compromising your insurance and potentially breaking the law.

Polarised sunglasses, such as Maui Jim or Ray Ban are fabulous as they instantly eliminate the glare of the sunlight reflected off the road, giving you better visibility.

The DVLA will allow you to drive up to any age, provided that you still have good enough reaction times and clear eyesight. Even those with glaucoma or cataracts won’t necessarily have a problem if the two eyes together give good enough clarity and a wide field of vision. To meet the most basic DVLA standard for driving, you must be able to read a modern number plate from 20 metres. However, regular eye tests are crucial to ensure that the full standard is being met.

At Taylor Biddle, you will find a huge selection of stylish eyewear and lenses to suit all budgets and our dispensing team will spend however long it takes and provide valuable advice to help you to make the right choice.

For older drivers, it is vital to ensure that your glasses or contact lenses are up to date and it’s a good idea to have a spare pair of glasses in your vehicle too. In France and other countries, for example, a driver must have a spare pair in the car by law! Night driving is certainly more demanding than driving during the day, particularly for older drivers who are still legal to drive without glasses, but struggle with glare at night.

fo r yo u a n d yo u r f a m i l y ’s f u t u r e With the UK now home to a growing ageing population, more and more people are realising the wisdom of planning for their financial future so they can enjoy a good quality of life or care in their later years. For many, their home will be their biggest asset and, without careful forethought, their hard earned investment in bricks and mortar could get swallowed up to pay for care fees. Michelle Monnes-Thomas, an Associate in our Wills, Probate & Lifetime Planning department and our Dementia Friends Champion, looks at the issues: More than 420,000 people aged over 65* are believed to live in residential and nursing homes across the UK and some of them will be, or have been, homeowners. Rising house prices over the years means some people, even without substantial cash savings, may cross the threshold for inheritance tax (IHT). IHT kicks in if your estate is worth more than £325,000 (or £650,000 for married couples) and your estate could then be liable to pay 40 per cent IHT. One option people ask about is gifting their home to their children. In inheritance tax terms, as long as

you live for another seven years or more, the property won’t form part of your estate for IHT purposes.

of money for instance could be viewed as trying to reduce your liability of paying for care.

However there are a few things to bear in mind. You can’t gift the property and continue to live in it, as you’ll be deemed to be ‘benefitting’ from it and it will stay as part of your estate.

If you are anticipating needing residential or nursing care in the future, careful planning of how you dispose of your property is therefore required.

You can continue to live in the property but you would have to pay the market rent to the new owner. Your children would have to pay income tax on that rent too. If you gift your home to your children and they move in with you, the house still remains part of your estate. You also can’t sell it to your children at lower than the market price. Although there are ways to mitigate, save and plan for IHT, you do have to be careful how you dispose of your property when it comes to care funding.

Michelle advises on a range of private client related matters including wills, powers of attorney, trusts and estates. Michelle is also part of the Community Care team, which advises on challenging care decisions and reviewing assessments for care and long-term care planning. She is also our Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Champion. She can be contacted on m.monnesthomas@fbcmb.co.uk or 01902 392 484. * https://www.ageuk.org.uk/Documents/ EN-GB/Factsheets/Later_Life_UK_ factsheet.pdf?dtrk=true%20

There is no set time period, such as the seven-year rule for IHT, when it comes to a Local Authority deciding if you have intentionally given away your home to prevent paying for care.

organisations as well as St. Michael’s Church and the City Council have come together to arrange the restoration of the memorial.

It bears the names of all those who died in service of their country in World War 1 (1914 -1918). Later the names of those who were killed in World War 11 (1939 -1945) were added. The Memorial is now in a precarious state due partly to the weathering of its soft sandstone and also to vandalism some years ago which led to structural damage.

The Committee hope to add the names of other Tettenhall residents who may have originally been omitted, as well as the names of any men or women who have given their lives on active service for their country since 1945 for example in the Falklands or Korea.

Sachkirat Bhambra

As a Preparatory School, preparing girls for a variety of senior school entrance examinations is always an integral part of our curriculum. In Upper School, we prepare the girls for both selective and nonselective senior schools which are either fee paying or state funded. In addition, we aim to assist parents to choose from the range of senior schools available and find the school which will enable each girl to find the very best senior school for her as an individual. We consider that it is only when your daughter reaches Year Six that the time has come to begin the decision making process about which senior school will be right for her. When your daughter reaches

ten or eleven years old, you will be aware of how she has developed and will be in a position to select a senior school that is best suited to her personality, interests and academic abilities. Parents who choose ‘all through’ schools (2 years old to 18 years old or 7 years old to 18 years old) are essentially making this decision many years earlier than necessary; when no parent can foretell how their child will develop. (Without a ‘prep’ school in the area, the boys, are sadly, are not as fortunate as the girls and therefore have no option but to make this decision earlier at the end of Year Two—and we are here to support with this too.) ‘Creating Choice at 11+’ is not just an advertising slogan or strap line. From April in Year Five through to March in Year Six and beyond if necessary, we work closely with pupils and parents to make this a reality. For example,

www.wolverhamptonwestmag.co.uk

we must offer our congratulations to Sachkirat Bhambra who has recently heard that she has been offered a joint Music and Academic Scholarship for Shrewsbury High School. This is in addition to her offer of places at St Dominic’s Grammar School (Performing Arts Scholarship awarded), King Edward VI High School Edgbaston and Wolverhampton Grammar School. She has also received letters from Queen Mary’s, Newport Girl’s High School, Wolverhampton Girl’s High School and Birmingham Grammar Schools Consortium indicating that her scores in both 11+ exams suggest that she should consider entry into a ‘state grammar school’ as an option. This is very impressive - I think Sachkirat and her parents will have a very difficult decision to make in March – spoilt for choice! 121

Grammar School

Few things play a bigger part in a school’s success than its staff, and Wolverhampton Grammar School’s wide range of initiatives to improve staff development and opportunities are truly impressive. Projects include a fund to support postgraduate training, research grants for teachers and a review of staff engagement in all strategic planning, as well as new CPD opportunities to help early career development, and media and external relations training. Comments in the latest staff survey demonstrate how this has paid off: “When you have a young family and spend most of your time at work, it’s important to enjoy coming into work, find your role rewarding and see you can make a difference”; “this is the best school I have ever worked in”; and “the environment we

work in is first rate and I believe the senior team will take the school to even greater heights”. This was just one area where Wolverhampton showed TES judges it could meet the criteria of “demonstrating excellence in strategy and direction”. Low student fees, an excellent ISI inspection report, the depth of community outreach and the achievement of pupils all confirmed this senior leadership team as a worthy winner. Kathy Crewe-Read, Head of Wolverhampton Grammar School comments “The work of a great School has been recognised by TES. To be selected as the best of the best by our peers and industry experts is a great testament to the hard work and commitment of every member of our community.” Philip Sims, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Wolverhampton Grammar School added “For me, there is an undoubted link between being judged “excellent” in all categories of the School’s activities by the Independent Schools Inspectorate last year and our Senior Management Team being recognised as the best team nationally by the Times Educational

has won ‘Senior leadership team of the year’ at the prestigious Tes Independent School Awards

Supplement this year. Our Head and her team illustrate outstanding leadership every day, ensuring that we provide the very best education for all our Students.” The TES judges said: “This was a category with a number of really creative strategic initiatives from a wide variety of schools in different contexts. The judges chose Wolverhampton Grammar School because it was clear that a closely knit team was addressing with real care many aspects of school life which directly impacted on the experience of teachers. “The personal, and apparently voluntary, testimonials from staff about their love of working in the school were also significant in the judges’ choice.” Winners attended a black-tie event at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, hosted by author, broadcaster, actor and entertainer Gyles Brandreth, where more than 400 attendees celebrated all that is outstanding in independent schools. On Saturday 10th February George Michael rolled into town to entertain 115 guests at South Staffordshire Golf Club. The evening began with an excellent dinner followed by an eighty minute set covering the vast range of George’s remarkable catalogue. Feet were soon moving on the dance floor to early hits by Wham before ending with Careless Whisper and, by popular demand, Last Christmas. Tribute nights are a popular form of entertainment at the club with previous turns by Elvis and the Jersey Boys having been well supported.

Land Rover Discovery By Rob Taylor

For a long time choosing to buy a Land Rover Discovery was a no-brainer. Peerless as the ultimate Swiss Army knife of motoring, it was in a class of its own – but that’s no longer the case. Today it is merely one of many options available to buyers looking to own the ‘complete’ car. The market is awash with competition: from BMW there is the X5, from Volvo the XC90 and from Audi the Q7. At least this is the case on paper, however if you get out and drive these colossal lumps of metal the story is quite different. The Discovery has soul where the others have none. It doesn’t pretend to be sporty or stylish; it isn’t pretentious and most of all it’s unapologetically British. Quirkiness trumps uniformity any day of the week. The Discovery really is a rare example of form following function. Take a look at it from the rear and you’ll notice just how pragmatic its design really is – more imposing than the white 136

cliffs of Dover, squared-off and angular simply to make a real seven-seater which allows for unwieldy loads to be posted easily through the boot. No feminine lines or nods to style, it is a brute designed to go above and beyond everything life can throw at it. The Land Rover’s off-road capabilities are legendary but few will use this vehicle for much more than traversing the occasional muddy lane or frostcovered driveway. I used it to drive around Wolverhampton and surrounding areas during a spell of unseasonable warmth and in so doing gave the Discovery its truest test, because traditionally this is the domain in which it has struggled most against its rivals. However I’m thrilled to say that this new Disco – or more specifically this £64,195 254bhp 3.0-litre TDI HSE variant – eclipses all other pretenders where it really matters: on the road. OK, so the price will cause more than just a little squeak of shock in some of you readers – especially when I tell you that with options it costs nearly £70,000 – but if you elect to cheapen this ride, you’ll regret it. Only with a small moon-

moving 443lb ft of torque on tap from the delightful V6 turbo-diesel engine will you fully feel the majesty available beneath your right foot, through the seamless eight-speed auto gearbox. As mentioned, you won’t really need the permanent four-wheel drive (nor the ensuing premium at the fuel pumps) or Land Rover’s latest All-Terrain Response 2 system but, like insurance, it’s nice to have just in case. A new monocoque construction saves masses of weight and unburdens the Discovery from the usual criticism relating to handling. I found it to be hugely impressive in this department, considering it weighs over 2 tonnes. Get it on the motorway and the miles just drop off with consummate ease. The upmarket cabin is a genuinely enjoyable and relaxing place to be and it has me imagining a future where self-driving cars make us buy based almost entirely upon the luxury available inside. On this basis there can be no better place in which to sit. Drive the Discovery and let all that ails you on the roads of modern Britain melt away. wolverhampton west magazine

unlock your engine’s true performance

WITh ECu REmAppINg

Your car’s Engine Control Unit, or ECU for short, is the brain of the engine.

• Increased horsepower – by removing existing limitations

• Better throttle response – through smoother power delivery • Safer overtaking – sharper accelerating gives you peace of mind

It reads, understands and makes decisions to deliver the correct mixture of fuel and air to provide the best mix of economy, performance and emission control. At HiQ Wolverhampton, we can remap it to maximise your car’s potential.

Why don’t car makers fine-tune their own ECU? You’re probably thinking, if it’s so good, why aren’t manufacturers doing it already? The simple answer is they are – but then they deliberately limit the engine’s performance to meet stringent restrictions in other countries around the world. We basically just unrestrict it.

Benefits of ECU Remapping: ECU Remapping will improve power and torque figures, increase throttle response and widen the powerband, resulting in a more flexible engine and a much sharper drive. Here are just some of the benefits: • Improved fuel economy – extra torque at the bottom of the rev range requires less throttle on acceleration

Porsche Centre Wolverhampton

Wins ‘New Retailer of the Year’ at Industry Awards

Steph McGovern, BBC presenter Business and Finance, Simon Priest, Principal Porsche Centre, Mark Gow, Sales Director, DSG Finance.

Local Porsche retailer Porsche Centre Wolverhampton was last night named ‘New Retailer of the Year’ at the Automotive Management (AM) Awards. Recognising best practice across the automotive industry, the awards are held annually and attract a high calibre of entry.

Undoubtedly the cars are the stellar stars of the landmark showrooms, but their defining clean-line elegance is reflected in the prestigious build project and its distinctive architectural design. It is a place to browse at leisure without the irritating trespass of sales people. “You’ll not find any of my sales executives chasing after customers in the showroom. It doesn’t work like that here. No-one gets jumped on. If they need help, customers are introduced to a sales executive. It’s a very relaxed customer experience,” says Simon.

The centre, that has floor space for 30 cars in the showroom and room for more than 100 outside, offers a Direct Dialogue analysis bay where owners can receive on-the-spot diagnosis by a trained Porsche technician prior to any necessary work being undertaken, a 16-bay workshop and dedicated MoT bay. In addition, there is a service loan fleet, and local collection and delivery of cars needing service and repairs. Porsche Centre Wolverhampton opened in April 2016 and just 12 months later was one of the most successful Porsche Centres in the network, and currently celebrates a more than 95% customer satisfaction rate in both sales and service thanks to a hardworking and dedicated team.

The team attended a glittering black-tie awards ceremony, where they were awarded for their hard work and a successful first year of trading. Centre Principal Simon Priest commented: “We’re all over the moon to have won the New Retailer of the Year category. I’m so proud of the team at Wolverhampton and the incredible hard work they’ve put in to make the centre a success and it’s fantastic that the industry has recognised that too. We all had a great night and look forward to another year of delivering top service for our customers.” 138

from Lexus Wolverhampton As the motor industry comes to terms with Government plans to steer drivers away from dirty diesels, Rob Taylor drives the new Lexus NX at Lexus Wolverhampton – a vehicle you just can’t buy with a diesel engine – and learns the meaning of the Japanese word, ‘Omotenashi’.

Happily NOx is no issue for the new NX and I’m very glad about this because, without being in any way eco-militant, I am vaguely interested in its impact upon our nation’s health. Where NOx is very bad, the NX is very good: it does without the piety of parent company Toyota’s

Prius and yet it is just as noble in its design ethos and execution. A self-charging hybrid battery allied to a 2.5 litre petrol engine forms the basis of the Lexus Hybrid Drive, which is – in this case four wheel drive, but available as front wheel drive too – able to offer drivers a

It’s refreshing to drive a vehicle that is unblemished by the noxious stigma of diesel. Ever since news broke of Volkswagen’s ‘defeat device’ scandal, diesel cars have been in the spotlight and it turns out that despite New Labour’s assurances back in 2001, the millions of oil burners on our roads are still parping out all kinds of evil. Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) are chief among culprits. 140

brand almost always being top in ‘driver satisfaction’ surveys, by the countess awards it has won over the last 25 years and by my own experiences at Lexus Wolverhampton.

smooth, quiet power delivery that is particularly user-friendly in and around town. Capable of running at times entirely on electric power, the NX sometimes consumes no petrol and produces zero emissions at all. Of course when you do need to put the hammer down and scoot out of trouble, the CVT transmission facilitates easy progress to petrol power and official emission numbers are very encouraging at 121g/km. Company car users should take note of this. The NX is an accomplished cruiser that suffers little in the way of wind or tyre noise; it copes ably with corners despite its high rideheight and is serenely comfortable across every surface. I’m sure it would be decent off-road as well although I’d be loathe to take it to a field for fear of tarnishing the handsome paintjob and posh alloys. Where the NX really shines is where most of us want it: inside. The bold and daring cockpit is leagues above even this most expensive NX Hybrid 300H Premier VVT-I 4WD’s £46,040 price tag. I’ve driven Maserati’s with cheaper interiors. Like any Apple store, it’s a case of one premium product bumping up against another – Mark Levinson sound system with 14 speakers, a Head-up Display system etc – because the NX Premier is the ultimate NX for looks, refinement and comfort.

driving aids make this vehicle really stand out, even amid stiff German competition. There’s lots of good stuff as-standard lower down the range as well, starting at an entry level of just under £35,000. This is not a German car where everything comes as an optional extra, even the air in the tyres. There’s much in the way of style too: angular creases and slashes provide rakish good looks which, unusually, don’t impact upon space inside because despite the sloping roofline headroom is ample. I really like this car: it’s not expensive even though it feels it, it’s frugal (average fuel consumption is listed at 54.3 mpg combined) and yet frivolous (who doesn’t love Head-up displays?!). In fact you might even say that it is the premier choice in a world over-stuffed with preening SUV contenders. And there’s more: ‘Omotenashi’, in fact. What’s that? In a nutshell it means that when you buy a Lexus you’re treated like family. This rapport between customer and dealer is supported by the

From the moment you enter the gleaming, modern Bilston Roadshowroom, you breathe in a friendly atmosphere, alive with expert support and knowledge, as well as a palpable buzz about the brand. Every one of the team here is clearly passionate about their work and their place within the Lexus family. They enthuse about Lexus in a way that is almost infectious. And no one brims with more passion than General Sales Manager, Sacha Noble: his encyclopaedic knowledge of Lexus is matched only by his enthusiasm to build and maintain a strong bond with both his customers and the community. He tells me about one customer who just recently returned to Lexus after a long stint away from the brand. It turns out that he was persuaded back into the fold shortly after Sacha took over at Lexus Wolverhampton. By what you wonder? Well, essentially by Sacha and his team. As I’ve always believed: people buy cars, but people also ‘buy’ people…. their personalities, their charisma. And with so much on display here, I’m sure there’ll be many, many more sales to come. The NX may be a powerful advocate for Lexus, but the folks at Lexus Wolverhampton go one better. Lexus Wolverhampton, Bilston Road, Wolverhampton WV2 2QE. Here at Mercedes-Benz of Wolverhampton we’re excited that the wait is almost over and the new A-Class is upon us. This new model was officially launched in January in Amsterdam in a live web stream beamed across the world and it did not disappoint. The new Mercedes-Benz A-Class completely redefines luxury, with its radical interior, striking exterior and innovative in-car infotainment that will change the way you interact with your vehicle. Its sporty appearance makes it a stand out on the road but it’s on the inside where it really impresses. Combining state of the art technology with a bold new look, the free-standing widescreen cockpit display replaces a conventional instrument cluster. As the centrepiece of the brand new Mercedes Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system, it incorporates a touchscreen interface and voice recognition feature. The highly intuitive system is based

around a sophisticated touch operation concept and uses artificial intelligence to learn your preferences. Just say the words, “Hey Mercedes, set the temperature to 21º” or “Hey Mercedes, turn the windscreen wipers on” and let MBUX do the rest. The exterior of the new A-Class is sporty and dynamic, with its low bonnet, flat LED headlights and striking radiator grille displaying an alluring appearance. Its sleek silhouette is thanks to a longer wheel base and sloping bonnet. Deservedly a leading model in the compact class, the brand new Mercedes-Benz A-Class is not short of space and style. It not only looks sensational but performs sensationally too, with a class- leading aerodynamic performance, an agile and assertive body and a host of semi-autonomous driving systems. All new A-Class models are also powered by new, efficient diesel and petrol engines, which complement the streamlined and sporty silhouette to produce a dynamic and efficient drive.

The spacious cabin and premium seats offer a comfortable drive with a choice of heated seating, sports seating and even a massage function. The noise insulation concept of the brand new A-Class means you can not only drive comfortably but peacefully too, so you can enjoy every mile out on the road. Peter Smith, General Manager at Mercedes Benz of Wolverhampton said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the all-new MercedesBenz A-Class to our dealership in the coming weeks. Its impressive new design and functionality improves on the already excellent standard of Mercedes-Benz and we’re excited to welcome our customers into our dealership to find out more about this great car.” Make sure you follow us on Twitter @lookersmercedes or search for Lookers MercedesBenz on Facebook to stay up to date on when we’ll have the new A-Class in our showroom.
