Guerilla QR! !IOS game that rewards players for promoting their art. ! !Guerilla QR was the final project in my Media Theory and Application class.!

Guerilla QR! !Guerilla QR’s goal is to gamify art promotion.! !User earn points and unlock achievements when their embedded QR codes are scanned in.!

Terry the Termite! !Terry the Termite is game concept designed for the Xbox 360 platform.! !This was a project done for my Game Design Documentation Class.!

Terry the Termite! !Action adventure game with elements of real time strategy. ! !The Core mechanic of the game is feeding. !

Terry the Termite! !Environments in the game will be procedurally generated. ! !This feature will help to greatly increase the replayability of the game. !

Street Fighter 2: The Trading Card Game! !This project was created as the final project of my non-digital game design class. ! !The assignment was to take a pre窶親xisting video game title and create an adaptation or abstraction of the game into a non-digital form. !

Street Fighter 2: The Trading Card Game! !2-player game designed around the rock, paper and scissors relationship between attacking, blocking and throwing in the Street Fighter series of fighting games. ! •  !

Street Fighter 2: The Trading Card Game! !The game incorporates features typically seen in fighting games and adapts them for the gameplay flow and pacing of a turn based card game.!

Dominos Redesign! !This was a project I did for my Non Digital Game Design class. ! !The goal was to make a single significant change to a well known non digital game to dramatically alter and improve the game play experience. !

Dominos Redesign! !My objective was to allow more meaningful decisions to be made.! !Make dominos more engaging in the process.!

Thesis Statement! !A clear definition of successful gamification of education allows the development of a set of guidelines to enable designers and educators to use game mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences; a modular game system will be produced to support the implementation of gamification of education.!

Abstract! !The idea of gamifying education is nothing new. What has been missing however is a set of guidelines for successful gamification of education that will enable designers and educators to use game mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences. This set of guidelines will be built around a clear and concise definition of gamification of education.! !My thesis will be proven by the creation of a modular game system with both a web and non-digital component. The core module will be the reward, achievement and character attribute systems. This information will be stored and modified through a web based game interface. The game can be expanded through the addition of modules; these modules can be “subject modules” for specific subjects and “system modules” for additional games systems. Besides creating the core module, I will also be designing 2 interdisciplinary subject module for students in the 8th to 12th grade range and a system module that allows for group competition through the addition of guilds.!

Thesis Goals! 1.  Develop a clear and concise definition of what successful gamification of education is.! 2.  Develop a set of guidelines based off of this definition that will enable designers and educators to use game mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences. ! 3.  Develop a modular game system with both a non-digital and web based component that will support the implementation of gamification of education. !

What is Gamification?! !Gamification is the use of game design techniques, game thinking and game mechanics to enhance non-game contexts. !

Examples of Gamification!

Examples of Educational Games!

Examples of Attempts to Gamify Education!

Short Comings! !Overreliance on pointification! !Focus is often on selling a product or franchise and not on user engagement.! !Lack of meaningful feedback.!

Successful Gamification of Education! !Successful Gamification of education can be defined as the successful use of game mechanics and game based thinking to facilitate the efficient transfer of useful knowledge and skills to end users.!

The Guidelines for Successful Gamification of Education! •  •  •  •  •

Universal Access! Instantaneous Feedback! Competition! Constant Rewards for Progress! Narrative Structure!

!Edu Quest is a modular game system with both a web and non-digital component. ! !The game can be expanded through the addition of modules.! !The web-based component of the game allows users to create, store, share user created game content. !

Core Rules Summary! !Players acquire experience points (XP) as they proceed through a game sessions which is a series of subject modules. ! !Every 100 XP acquired levels a player up. ! !Every player starts at level 1.! !Optional achievements on subject modules allow to unlock non XP awards. !

System Modules! !System modules are persistent modules that change the way the game is played. ! !An example of a system module would be a “guild system to make group competition among players possible.!

Guild Module! •  *will be added upon completion!

Subject Modules! !Subject module are where gameplay takes place.! !Each subject module has a task (or series of tasks) that should allow players to earn a total of 100 XP.! !Each subject module has achievements on it that users can complete to unlock non XP awards.!

Game Sessions! •  Multiple subject and system modules can be combined together in a sequential manner to form a Game Session.! •  The Web Component will allow users to create, store, visualize and manage information relevant to a Game Session.!

The Phantom’s Return! !The Phantom’s Return is an interdisciplinary game session for art and history aimed at the 8th to 12th grade range.! !It is comprised of 5 individual subject modules. ! !The game sessions also includes the guild module.!

Gameplay Block 2!

!Gamified research! !assignment about Impressionism.!

Gameplay Block 3!

!Gamified Research! !project that uses competition to encourage “head fake or indirect learning.!

Gameplay Block 4!

!Gamified art project.! !Implementation of competitive mechanics to make an otherwise mundane assignment more engaging.!
