INTRODUCTION /
TRANSFORMING LEARNING at Norwich University: Revitalizing the Historic Academic Core 4
www.jonesarch.com
1. Plan for a complete campus experience by integrating landscape with architecture 2. Identify ways in which accommodations for general purpose classrooms differ from purpose built spaces and how technology and furniture support these various modes 3. Evaluate historic buildings by considering their best use and how they do (or do not) support current learning environments. 4. Analyze program requests from campus departments and determine if it is an appropriate fit for the existing building's inherent organization and structure.

Lessons Learned You can leverage departmental reorganization to challenge 1:1 building to department assumptions.
Finding common resources and shared ground across departments helps dissolve these boundaries.
Look to the inherent character of your existing buildings to discern their highest and best use.
These shared resources are fertile ground for cross-disciplinary research and exploration.

POST OCCUPANCY
TRANSFORMING LEARNING at Norwich University: Revitalizing the Historic Academic Core 59
www.jonesarch.com
Post Occupancy Feedback How have you seen students using the new open study areas and study rooms outside of classroom hours? "Yes – routinely. This includes the spaces in the north walkways on Mack 2nd floor, the entrance-area spaces on Mack 2nd and 3rd floors, and the spaces in the middle of the building on Mack 2nd and 3rd floors. Also, the room M408 gets frequent use. That room has also been a wonderful multifunctional space." "They are in virtually constant use, especially on MWF. I am often here in the evening and on weekends and see them in use then also. I know that students appreciate these facilities, especially following the lack of spaces like this in Dewey..." "In Webb/North, infrequently. In Mack they seem to attract lots of use." TRANSFORMING LEARNING at Norwich University: Revitalizing the Historic Academic Core 60

Post Occupancy Feedback How have you seen students using the new open study areas and study rooms outside of classroom hours? "In Webb/North, infrequently. In Mack they seem to attract lots of use." "Yes! The study room adjacent to your office on the 4th floor is rarely empty, and the open spaces on either side of the hallway just past that are almost always occupied, often with students working with tutors. The clear plastic 'whiteboards' are a popular feature."

Post Occupancy Feedback How does the new auditorium compare to Dole Auditorium, with regard to how it is serving your/our needs? "There is no comparison! The new auditorium is modern, clean, well lit, easy technology, more comfortable to sit as well as to teach." "I teach regularly in the auditorium. The room, accommodations, sound, screen, and touchscreen are outstanding. I recommend that a method be determined to better secure the cabling from the speaker podium to the floor jacks..." "There is no comparison. I have been a guest lecturer several times and find the facilities, layout and acoustics a significant improvement over Dole." Post Occupancy Feedback How does the new auditorium compare to Dole Auditorium, with regard to how it is serving your/our needs? "Light-years difference. Dole was adequate and sufficed for classes that required large cohorts. The new auditorium is a showpiece, and an outstanding place to teach." "The auditorium is lovely, but the mezzanine [the break between the front seats and the higher raked seats] seems to reduce the likelihood of people sitting closer to the stage."

Post Occupancy Feedback Other suggestions from faculty: "It would be nice to have some outlets at the seating spaces along the hallway. Students sit there with their laptops and it would be nice if they could charge their devices as they sat." "I know, the air blowers are green, but there are times when a towel would be nice..." "I really like the atrium in Mack - the light and airy space is lovely when waiting to go into the auditorium. I wish it had a coat check room." "...we need a better room allocation process. It would have been nice to know the layout before teaching, as syllabi can be adapted to different sorts of spaces." Post Occupancy Feedback Other remarks by faculty: "A great feature of Mack (4th floor at least) is the seating benches along the walls: these are heavily used, typically by students waiting for their shot at office hours, or for a next class." "If we imagine, going forward, more synchronous hybrid classes, rooms with features to present and originate streaming content to classroomattending and remotely-connected students will become increasingly important. Some of the new classrooms seem better set-up to support this kind of operation than others, though I suspect all can with little modification."

Post Occupancy Feedback Other remarks by faculty: "I have taught numerous times in the South Instruction room, and love it, although there can be issues with tech functionality from time to time. I miss the ability to project multiple users to a single screen. I don't find the two interfaces particularly similar, but I'm not intimidated by technology." "I feel the facility is a huge success and a great contributor to our ability to teach. The brightness in the classrooms, technical facilities and overall “space” has been a dramatic improvement to NU. There are some issues, of course, but I would list them as minor."
