Music festivals are a great way to listen to music with people who are just as much of a fan as you are. However, you most likely haven’t been to all of the greatest festivals of all time, as many of these on this list are from as far back as the 1960s. So today, we’re going to go through a comprehensive list of the best music festivals of all time.
MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL 1967 If you’re looking for the mother of all music festivals, look no further than this California festival. This multi-day pop festival essentially laid down the template that people use all over the world. This concert, taking place in an old county fairground, is most easily remembered for being the first major concert performed by Jimi Hendrix. During this performance, he set fire to his guitar at the end of playing Wild Thing. Few performers could top that.

TORONTO ROCK AND ROLL FESTIVAL 1969 After the Beatles broke up, you rarely ever saw George or John tour. This is why a live festival performance from John is something to be remembered. It’s been said that he rehearsed for a few hours on the flight over from London and even was violently ill right before he went onstage. However, the resulting performance is one to be remembered. Performing with his wife, Yoko Ono, and Eric Clapton, John performed an unforgettable performance with a lot of songs being picked from Lennon’s childhood. These songs included Blue Suede Shoes, Dizzy Miss Lizzy, and even a live performance of the thenreleased song Give Peace a Chance.
WOODSTOCK 1969 This festival was declared a ‘disaster area’ by New York State and was also known for the end of the hippy dream of the 60s. More than 400,000 people were in attendance at Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York. Even though the recreational activities were aplenty, the music was as star-studded as ever. The Who, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, and even Jimi Hendrix performed. It was definitely a festival to be remembered.
READING 1992 This performance was well known for being the very last UK performance by Nirvana. If you watch the resulting footage from the show, you can see that it was one of the best performances the band had ever had. Kurt Cobain, mocking the rumors of his heroin addiction, was wheeled onstage in a wheelchair and even went as far as to pretend to collapse on the floor before the first song had started. He then got to his feet to play Lithium, Smells LIke Teen Spirit, and Come as You Are. He would be dead 27 months later, making this performance one of the most special performances he ever did.
