Leith is home to people from various multifarious backgrounds. As a result, the area comprises of a wide range of businesses relating to the cultures of its inhabitants. Leith has developed into somewhat of a halfway house between Edinburgh’s Docks and New Town. Garages Schools/Education Empty/Unused Bars etc. Others NHS/Dentist CafÊ/Bakery Groceries/Off-Licence Charities/Second Hand Newsagents Barber/Hairdresser/Tanning/Tattoo Fast Food/Take-Away Casino/Betting Construction Specialists


Leith’s Current Commercial Programs 4


The development plan for Leith Walk introduces the notion of implementing food and culinary activities as a social catalyst for community growth. Introducing opportunities of interaction, sociability and education among Leith Walk’s residents, the masterplan poses a response to the growing culture in food among the area.

Leith’s multicultural consistency is evident in the urban fabric. One such instance takes form in the emergence of a variety of cuisines from diverse cultures. These establishments give the area it’s contrasting living conditions, tiling the streetscape with various forms of culinary expression.

Implementing food as a catalyst for community growth 1

Housing the apprentice chef. Residential units for individual chefs in training, on placement within local restaurants.

Housing the family business. Residential units for families of three to four, where living is provided above individual restaurant spaces.

Appetite for Change Centre - Previously a storage facility for Edinburgh’s trams, this pitched roof building accomodates training spaces, cafes and new cultural restaurants to the area. While each protagonist feeds from and offers to the development program, the centre provides cooking classes, training and family team building to the residents of Leith Walk.
