By Jonathan Elsey You could be forgiven for a sense of deja vu as the BRSCC Mazda circus rolled into Northamptonshire for the first rounds of the 2014 campaign. Six months since the curtain fell on the 2013 season, the UK’s premier MX-5 championship was back at the very same Silverstone International circuit. The venue was looking mighty familiar, the weather was the same – wet and cold – and a first glance round the paddock could
have led you to conclude that it was ‘business as usual’, much the same as last year. But when you looked a bit closer there were in fact some crucial differences. Some of last season’s big hitters were absent – 2013 runner-up Brett Smith was away at university, young hotshot Alex Preston had left to race Ginettas and while Tom ‘Mr MX-5’ Roche was still in the paddock leading his Blendini team, the big news story of the first Mazda meeting of the year, was that he would not be back to defend his title.
■■ Adam Craig heads a pack of cars into Abbey during free practice.
He had decided to move on to new challenges after claiming five of the past Mazda MX-5 championships in his ‘mean green Blendini machine’. As a natural consequence, you may have assumed last year’s returning top drivers James Blake-Baldwin or maybe Alan Henderson would surge to the fore. Or you may have surmised that the racing would be less exciting without Roche, but in fact it didn’t turn out that way. Now would be the chance for many others to shine. Running out of the garages – that in a few months’ time would be populated by Hamilton, Vettel and co – 46 eager drivers gathered for the BRSCC’s biggest ever entry of MX-5s. The club’s stunning new large hospitality unit befitted this auspicious start to the season. The Mazda MX-5 championship continues to draw in new names, many of whom are pictured below, and one of last year’s rookies Johnathan (JJ) Clements made a fantastic start taking two wins. Despite the fact that all four Mazda races of the weekend were comfortably won, particularly race 1B by Simon Goddard, all the action behind the winners was packed with typically close racing.
■■ Simon Woods had a worrying time during testing (see right). He exclaimed, “I nearly died! I had a brake hose swell up on me. Brian Chandler discovered it while checking the brake pads, it has swelled up to about the size of my finger. I didn’t know at the time, the brakes felt fine.”
Carrying on from a successful trial last year, every double header round now includes a 20-minute practice session to help drivers blow away the cobwebs, learn the track and help set up their cars. As last season, thanks to the large entry, the Mazda field is running a split grid system where the fastest drivers race each other in group ‘A’ and the slower
competitors battle in group ‘B’. To add a little spice to the mix, the top five drivers from Race 1B gain promotion to Race 2A while the bottom five from Race 1A are relegated to Race 2B. To decide who would be racing who necessitated two qualifying sessions. For these, the cars were split by their practice session times with the first fastest in qualifying 1, the second fastest in qualifying 2 and the third fastest in qualifying 1 and so on.

qualifying 1 The first qualifying session took place in the best weather conditions of the meeting and saw James Blake-Baldwin set the fastest time of the weekend recording a 1.22.107 on the 11th of his 13 laps. In the cloudy but dry weather he was over a second faster than second-placed Simon Baldwin his brother, followed closely by experienced campaigners Will Blackwell-Chambers, Martin Tolley and Alan Henderson. It was always going to be interesting to see how the Mazda racers fared under strict new track limit rules brought in for 2014, and Blackwell-Chambers and Roger Chesneau were the first to have times disallowed for going outside the white lines. Nevertheless Chesneau did particularly well, qualifying sixth despite having lap times removed. Seventh fastest was ex short-oval racer Darron Lewis in an impressive MX-5 debut. Sam Smith scraped into the ‘A’ group by claiming the all important 12th fastest time at the expense of an out-of-sorts Simon Goddard who would have to console himself with pole position in the first of the ‘B’ group races. Blendini team leader Tom Roche said his driver Goddard totally lost power on what is a major power circuit: “He was 8-10mph down on our other cars. He’s
driving really well, his data shows he’s one of the quickest through the corners but he’s two seconds a lap slower than others.” So the Blendini mechanics led by Josh Robbins opted to change the engine in Goddard’s car... again. Roche said: “This will be Simon’s fourth engine this week! Unfortunately, we don’t have any more spare engines with us, but we do have a car back at the workshop in Wales which we know has a good strong motor so the boys are making the fivehour trip back, to strip the lot… engine, gearbox, diff, driveshaft, air-flow meter, ECU. It was their idea – they’re brilliant. They don’t have a trailer licence so they have to bring the parts in the back of the van rather the whole car.” Tom explained his own absence from the championship this year, which came as a big surprise to many drivers. He said: “Racing costs money and I decided that the money would probably be better spent on some other sort of racing this year. I love doing the Mazdas but I’ve won the championship five times now so I’ve got nothing left to prove. I’ll still be around the paddock though as I hope to run five or six customer cars per race meeting, and I still have my car so I might be tempted to do a couple of events.” He added: “It’s time for a change really.
I need a new challenge this season. The plan is to do a few Mk3 Supercup races and selected events driving some interesting and varied machinery including classic and endurance racing.” In light of this news, James Blake– Baldwin said: “I hope to be one of the front runners this year. We built a new car in the anticipation of taking Tom on, and a couple of days ago he rang me to say he wasn’t racing. I said ‘you’re kidding me,’ it is a little bit frustrating. Nevertheless there are still a lot of good people here like Alan Henderson, Charlie Charman, Simon Goddard and Will Blackwell-Chambers is really quick especially in the wet. Johnathan Clements is going really well, Simon my brother is too and all team orders go out the window. My dad said ‘go out and kill yourselves’ that’s a nice pep talk!” Simon Baldwin who has inherited James’ car from last season said: “I did quite well in qualifying and I’m very pleased to be in the top three. A mix up with the transponder numbers made it look like I was fastest for a while, until we discovered that was my brother’s number! He was rather amused after we found out, but a bit worried to start with. “It is always hard work getting two cars ready rather than one, but so far we’re

really pleased with how far we have come. James has a lot more pace here so its unlikely we’ll work together on track. I’m going to be battling for second or third.” Will Blackwell-Chambers said: “Considering we’ve done no testing due to lovely university exams, I’m very pleased with the qualifying result. Seventh on the grid is generally where we expected to be. We’ll see what happens in the race. Wet weather’s not a massive issue for me, it’s just a case of trying to get to grips with it in the first lap.” Martin Tolley was delighted with his progress and said: “In the sense that I have qualified third in my group, and fifth overall that’s a significant improvement from last season. From my perspective, it’s about getting my head back in the game because I went out for practice earlier and was at sixes and sevens. I just wasn’t thinking. I came back in, had a conversation with James Blake-Baldwin and even though we’re all racers he’s still very supportive – thanks James. He gave me a few pointers, I went back out, applied them and got third. Moving forward is a big morale boost and makes all the expenditure and time worthwhile.” Alan Henderson mused: “Qualifying was okay. The car wasn’t handling right in practice, so we changed some settings on the back but went too far. I had to come in and readjust it, meaning I missed a lot of the session and

couldn’t quite get the time in. If it rains tomorrow then that could be a bonus for me. I’m starting on the fifth row which is a long way back but I started there last year and did well.” Newcomer David Staples propped up the qualifying timesheets but underlined the camaraderie in the paddock and said: “This will be my first ever race so I’m hoping it doesn’t rain tomorrow. I have only done testing here and at Donington. I have had a lot of help, everybody has been very kind. “I have some friends here including the driver David Hart who I work with. I’m impressed with how helpful everybody has been. They come over if they see I’m
■■ The contentious issue of exceeding track limits was brought up at the driver briefing after many drivers took advantage of the run-off area at Club during free practice. working on something and ask if I need any help.” Canadian former professional cyclist and ski instructor Andrew Caird was also making his car racing debut and said: “There’s not much of a parallel between what I’ve done before and car racing, although in downhill mountain biking you’re always choosing the line and braking points, and you want to win of course. My previous experience runs to a handful of track days. This year I was going to continue with them before starting racing maybe next year, but found I was doing really well compared to a lot of my friends so I thought I’d take the plunge and give racing a go.”

qualifying 2 In the second qualifying session the weather played a part, as it started dry but threatening, and rain fell by lap three so competitors’ times dropped off by about five seconds a lap. The timesheets were headed by Charlie Charman at 1.23.168 followed by Johnathan (JJ) Clements, James Harris, Gary Hufford and Clive Powles. The all-important ‘A’ group cut-off point was set at 11th place and was grabbed by Jason Greatrex who just squeezed in by less than six hundredths of a second from the unlucky Paul Tucker. Tucker had to settle for a front row start in the first ‘B’ race of the weekend. Drivers who had times disallowed for disrespecting track limits were Joshua Jackson, Matt Tasker and new boy Oliver Allwood. A happy Charman said: “Having not tested, I’m delighted with the qualifying result. I was lucky following JJ and James Harris and had a really good tow in the first couple of laps then it rained and we all lost three to four seconds so it was perfect timing. A lot of people came in and changed suspension settings because it got slippery quickly but three laps later it started to dry. “There’s not much to this circuit, I wouldn’t call it a favourite but I’m comfortable with it.”
■■ Gary Hufford was hoping for for better than fourth in qualifying, but rain put paid to his plans.
He paid tribute to his mechanics and teammates: “Blink Motorsport do a great job and I have some new teammates this year which is fun. I’m impressed with how JJ’s going, it will be odd not to be with Simon [Goddard] but I’m sure we’ll still have some good racing. I think James Blake-Baldwin has half a second on the rest of us but we’ll see.” He revealed: “We nearly gave up racing as Ewan’s started karting and it’s difficult to justify spending the money year after year. We came home at the end of last season with the aim of selling the car but it got to a month ago and we just couldn’t bring ourselves to place the advert. We just love the weekends away and the car is going well, we’re having too much fun! “It does make the championship more
appealing without Tom, he is so good that there is now an opportunity for about five people to compete for the title; Alan Henderson, maybe myself, JJ and a couple of others are good for a shout if we can keep James BlakeBaldwin at bay.” Gary Hufford was not so happy with his qualifying time and said: “We’ve been unlucky with the rain. I was hoping to be in second or third and I got fourth. We’re fast in the dry but it’s the luck of the draw – it just started raining! I would prefer the dry tomorrow, all day long, but we’ve also had some good wet running in the winter. “I’m aiming for the top five in the championship as I’ve been doing it for a few years now, and have been progressing. I’m absolutely aiming for the podium this weekend.”

■■ Charlie Charman gets a great start to lead into the first corner.
RACE 1A With Tom Roche, Brett Smith and Alex Preston all absent from the 2014 grid, all eyes were instead on James BlakeBaldwin, Charlie Charman and Simon Baldwin to set the pace. Blake-Baldwin suffered a terrible start, swamped by his rivals. His brother Simon however got away well but it was Charman who seemed best suited to the conditions and surged into first place. In the middle of a huge ball of spray Roger Chesneau span in front of the grandstand at Abbey corner, and was collected by the unlucky Nick Holmes, who was forced to retire with a damaged car. For now, Blake-Baldwin was left buried in the pack. By the end of the opening lap, Charman, JJ Clements, Baldwin and James Harris were all ahead of the recovering BlakeBaldwin, and Martin Tolley was catching up fast. Clements slipped up the inside to take the lead as Charman turned in for a late apex at Abbey for the third time of asking. Behind, Baldwin got a nudge from Alan Henderson at the same corner. Crossing the line for the fourth time, Clements had opened up a two-second

gap over Charman while at the back Jason Greatrex, Chesneau, Chris Hart and Michael Fisk along with Holmes faced demotion to the ‘B’ group unless they could respond. Cardiff-based Greatrex was shown a black and white flag for exceeding track limits, and later Jiri Horalek and Alan Henderson would suffer the same fate of incurring a five-second penalty. Somewhat amazingly for Mazdas, these were the only drivers to offend during a weekend of races in tricky driving conditions. Meanwhile Andy Coombs had surged from 19th to fourth in a storming drive, and Sam Smith who

started in 23rd had reached sixth. With startling pace, Tolley (who set the fastest lap of the race) chased down a struggling Charman while BlakeBaldwin languished in the pit lane after a collision with his brother on the fifth lap at Village. Tolley moved up to second, and started pushing Clements – while Coombs hit third place on lap 11. With two laps to go Clements enjoyed a dominant lead and nobody looked able to catch the Magma People-backed racer who managed a 2.34 second margin by the end. 12 but dropped back a place as the laps ran out. With Tolley secure in second all eyes were on Coombs and Charman who were having a titanic battle for the remaining podium spot. Blink Motorport-supported Charman gamely hung on to third despite a slipping clutch as the two cars crossed the line together. Jason Greatrex and Chesneau managed to keep their places in the ‘A’ group with Blake-Baldwin, Baldwin, Fisk, Hart and Holmes all demoted to ‘B’. A thrilled Clements said. “I got a good run down Hangar Straight, then Simon Baldwin took a dry line to get past me and I had a massive slide as I was on a full dry set up. That was great fun. My tyres started going towards the end as it was greasy out there and I had a lot of pressure in them. It’s my first win of an ‘A’ race so that’s a good start point, to aim for the championship now.” A frustrated Simon Baldwin said: “I have no idea what happened, James came into me and initially claimed someone had hit him. But nobody’s coming forward for that one so we’ll have a look

at the video. I’ve got a bent steering track rod so the wheels are pointing in the wrong direction but I’ll be back out in the next race.” A despondent James Blake-Baldwin said: “I screwed up the start. I gave it too many revs and got a lot of wheel spin, and everybody else just went by me. It’s not going well for us this weekend. It was absolutely wild out there as everybody was trying to find out where the grip was. Then it settled down.” Charman said: “I had a brilliant start and pulled it was a Sunday LAP away 6 LAPlike 7 LAP 8 LAP 9 LAP 10 morning trip to Tescos. I pulled away slowly with low revs, and then it just gripped.
“I was pretty confident I’d get a good start because being on grid two I was on the outside, where it was a little bit drier. I was on dry tyres with some soft settings which seemed to work initially, and after four laps the clutch started to slip. We have put in a new clutch and slave cylinder so will be ready for the next one. I was lucky to hang on to third.” Tolley recalled the drama: “I had a brilliant start then there was a complete melee going into the first bend. I went from fifth to second then back to seventh. I was not going to get in James’ way – we were respecting each other. I was gaining half a second on Clements every lap. Second is a bona fide result and gives me some credibility in the championship. I dedicate this result to my late father and I have to admit that I got a bit tearful at the end.”
Chesneau recalled his first lap incident and said: “I lost it, started spinning, came back and Nick was the one I I’ve LAP 11hit.LAP 12 been to see him and it’s a real shame, he needs a new radiator and a bit of work on the front end body panels.”

■■ Simon Goddard leads Paul Tucker, Kevin Brent, Jake Simpson and the rest of the pack into Abbey at the start of Race 1B.
RACE 1B Blendini Motorsport-run Simon Goddard started in pole position and stayed out in front throughout – to secure a victory of a magnitude seldom seen in one-make racing. Goddard had achieved a strong lead of an amazing six seconds by the end of the first lap. Behind him there was a lot of shuffling among the ranks. AK Automotive driver Jake Simpson had surged from fifth on the grid into second place with the equally faststarting Lewis Field hot on his heels. Richard Collins also impressed with a drive from 14th on the grid to fourth within the first lap. With all this action it was perhaps inevitable that there would be some contact and indeed front row starter Paul Tucker was racing side by side with Kevin Brent until they touched on the opening tour sending the pair scurrying to the pits with tyre damage. Newcomer Christian Young made a great start from 22nd to make up an incredible 12 places on the first lap but unfortunately couldn’t sustain the success. Adam Craig dropped down to sixth then ninth by lap four, and Simpson dropped to fifth in a great dice with Collins. It was also tight for second position between Matt Tasker and Field, with the latter driving the more cautiously of the two as Simpson closed in on his tail. Goddard hit traffic by lap nine, about the time when debutant Tristan Harrison-Kerr span and ended up pointing the wrong way in the pit lane exit. The increasingly exciting scrap for second was hotting up with Simpson,
After an eventful few days, Goddard said: “It was my first time in a ‘B’ race. Since Wednesday I have had multiple different engines and when the Blendini boys offered to go back to Wales to fetch another one last night, I said ‘you can’t, that’s ridiculous’ but they wanted to. If the engine is strong and works well I’d like to be in the top ten for my next race. I’m usually quite good off the start so hope to do well there, which would salvage quite a bad week.” ■■ Jake Simpson had a great battle with Lewis Field and Matt Tasker to take second.
Tasker and Field running together for the majority of the race. Further back a fascinating fight for seventh place endured between John Cockburn-Evans and Graham Colby. Goddard was now untouchable with a 45.1 second lead – well on his way to making one of the most dominant wins ever seen in Mazda racing, even surpassing some of Roche’s legendary drives. In a rare sight for the evenlymatched Mazdas, the leader had lapped everybody up to eighth place, by the time he crossed the finish line. The fight for second was finally clinched by Simpson, Field took third, Tasker was delighted with fourth, Collins in fifth and Andrew Caird took sixth in his first ever race. Colby and Cockburn-Evans stayed nose-to-tail over the line just 0.3 seconds apart, with Tony Liversidge and Adam Craig rounding off the top ten. However the closest finish was between David Hart and Simon Woods who were separated by a mere seven thousandths of a second.
Kevin Brent said: “I had a slight coming together with Paul Tucker off the start. It wasn’t much of a bump but it took out the tyre valve so basically I got a puncture. I got back to the pits where Martin Tolley’s team changed the wheel and I managed to get back out – and set the second fastest time in the process. “I was gutted, it was good fun getting through the field but I was hoping to qualify for the second ‘A’ race.”
■■ Kevin Brent’s novel way to obtaining sponsorship by approa ching multiple business contacts instea d of chasing one or two major companies seems to have paid off. He achieved aro und 30 sponsors, each pledging £10 0 in return for a sticker on his car and the chance to come and see him race.

■■ Alan Henderson was back on form in a highly competitive Race 2A.
RACE 2A By winning earlier in the day Johnathan (JJ) Clements claimed pole for Race 2A but his lead was immediately lost to Martin Tolley who steamed ahead off the line showing a spirit which would mark him out in this amazing race. Charlie Charman tucked in for third and Will Blackwell-Chambers got another good start while everybody swarmed into the first corner and got through safely. By Stowe Corner, Clements was back in front with Tolley shuffled back into the middle of the pack and by the end of the first lap Charman was second to Blackwell-Chambers’ third with Tolley in fourth ahead of Andy Coombs. Several drivers had enjoyed very good starts including Gary Hufford,
with a spin which put him well out of contention.
■■ Darron Lewis mixes it with MX-5 stalwarts.
Simon Goddard and Jiri Horolek who all made up seven places in the first lap. In contrast, the big losers were James Harris, Clive Powles and Oliver Allwood who lost several places each. Having made it into the ‘A’ race Matt Tasker threw all his hard work away
On the second lap, Stowe turned into Tolley’s ‘corner of courage’ as he seized the opportunity to take third place, ahead of Blackwell-Chambers and Alan Henderson who had climbed to fifth. But the battle for third was on, as all three were evenly matched at this point until Blackwell-Chambers went wide over the kerbs. Everywhere you looked there were multi-car battles developing, James Harris was knocked out of the top ten by Goddard and Joshua Jackson was forced off by Powles during their continuing scrap. By lap four Clements had pulled away
■■ Martin Tolley heads JJ Clements and Charlie Charman into the first corner, but his lead was to be short-lived. 14

slightly to build a gap of 1.3 seconds over the chasing Charman, who fell into the clutches of Blackwell-Chambers. Kris Greatrex who was going well in sixth position, span across the circuit on the exit of Stowe and hit the wall side on. Further back Horalek did his best to hang onto a top ten position only to be demoted by Goddard and was in freefall by lap six. There seemed little chance of Blackwell-Chambers working together with either Tolley or Henderson to catch Clements, but then Tolley had a moment at Village on the seventh lap, leaving Blackwell-Chambers second ahead of Charman. Still trying hard, Charman squeezed into second and Tolley plunged up the inside of Hufford only to sustain damage to his car as the AB Motorsport driver seemed too busy tackling Blackwell-Chambers to see Tolley make a move at the apex.
As the threatened rain returned on lap eight, Tolley drove inside Henderson in what the commentator Andy McEwan called a ‘great late move - which worked this time’ and Tolley made it stick to gain fourth place behind Clements, Charman and Blackwell-Chambers and in front of Henderson. By now Clements had stretched his lead to 2.5 seconds
and Coombs had retired. As BlackwellChambers overtook Charman for second, both were lapping quicker than Clements, and Tolley was resolutely leading the chasing pack with eight minutes left of the 20-minute race. Behind the five-car battle for second sat an equally enthralling six-car squabble
■■ Battles raged throughout including this great scrap involving Joshua Jackson. Silverstone 5th & 6th April 2014 | Rounds 1 & 2

■■ Jason Greatrex was a key player in the magnificent seven car scrap for seventh place.
for seventh starring Sam Smith, Jason Greatrex, James Harris, Roger Chesneau, Simon Goodard and Darron Lewis. Just as with the fight for second place some eight seconds up the road, the order appeared to change with every corner of every lap. This was turning into some race! Not to be outdone Jiri Horalek, Paul Bishop and Clive Powles were also at it hammer and tongs for 13th and incredibly, it didn’t end there! Young guns Lewis Field, Oliver Allwood, Joshua Jackson and Jake Simpson were probably the closest of all. The quartet seemingly circulating as one in their fight for 16th to 19th places. Back at the sharp end, Tolley made another brave move right around Blackwell-Chambers, and tried an outside move again at Stowe – once again making it work by the time he
through Abbey and passed on the outside of Blackwell-Chambers. Clements remained out in front, a position which he maintained to clinch his second relatively straightforward win of the day – but his runaway lead alone didn’t do this race justice.
■■ Charlie Charman is pushed wide by Gary Hufford at Vale ending his chances of a second podium finish of the weekend.
was out of Vale. As the field entered the final two minutes a last-gasp lunge into Vale from Hufford pushed Charman wide and allowed Blackwell-Chambers, Tolley and Henderson through. Henderson found himself in second with Blackwell-Chambers and Tolley still side by side until Tolley nudged ahead. Charman enjoyed a mega run
Henderson finally claimed the second place which so many had fought for, ahead of Tolley, Blackwell-Chambers, Charman and Hufford who all crossed the line within one second of each other. You have only to look at the driver tracker graphic below, to see how action-packed this race was, surely one of the greatest Mazda races of recent times and a great advert for the BRSCC championship. I don’t know how they will edit all this action down for the TV!

■■ James Blake-Baldwin leads from his brother and Chris Hart on his way to a comfortable victory.
RACE 2B The final Mazda race was destined to be a battle of the brothers, between last year’s championship front-runner James Blake-Baldwin and his brother Simon Baldwin who had both been relegated to the ‘B’ ranks. Chris Hart was another of the five drivers who had been demoted, but it turned out that all three had a memorable race to look forward to anyway, and many other battles raged throughout the field too. Nick Holmes was a no-show, on his way home with a damaged car from his first race. Blake-Baldwin had the best start despite pole position man Hart putting up a feisty defence off the line, and by the first corner Blake-Baldwin was leading with his older brother giving chase. Danny Green had a very poor start, starting 14th and by lap three was languishing down in last place.
■■ Kevin Brent shuns the advances of Michael Fisk and Adam Craig at Vale.
Non-finisher from the first race Paul Tucker started in 21st position but by the end of the first lap had climbed into the top ten behind Adam Craig and John Cockburn-Evans. Tucker’s meteoric rise continued and soon saw him up to fourth on lap four.
■■ Michael Fisk rides the kerbs at Vale.

Up to 11th was Kevin Brent, who had been fighting for a podium position when he was in collision with Tucker and went out in the first race. Brent enjoyed a better fate this time round, challenging Cockburn-Evans and Graham Colby in lap six and getting as

high as fifth, but would ultimately finish sixth. At Club, the leaders stretched ahead with Hart in third. At the halfway point Hart tagged along behind Baldwin, managing comparable lap times. Craig tried to go up the inside of Fisk but failed. In the drama, or as a result of his battle with Brent, Cockburn-Evans dropped three spots to 11th. Commentator Andy McEwan had his eyes on the leaders. He said: “The problem for Simon Baldwin is Chris Hart is only a couple of car lengths behind. If they were to work together perhaps they could close in on BlakeBaldwin, the race leader.” Craig was up to fifth. Cockburn-Evans conceded another place to Simon Woods who he’d scrapped with all race, and dropped out of the top ten, only to later gain back the ninth slot. With seven minutes to go, there was a sixcar train at the back of the field led by Michael Lawson, which was soon to be lapped by the leaders. Hart had dropped to 1.8 seconds behind Baldwin, as BlakeBaldwin started overtaking some of the back markers and getting slowed down by traffic. Colby moved down to eighth after surviving a three-abreast battle into a corner with Brent and Fisk. By lap 11, the gap from first to second

■■ Making a return for 2014 was the popular fastest lap com petition where a set of shaved Hankook tyres is awarded to the competitor who guesses closest to his actual lap time, averaged over the two races. place had grown to 5.4 seconds, before Blake-Baldwin lost time in traffic, but still nobody could really compete with his pace. Colby span out, which brought him down to 12th. Henry Lawson and Christian Young had an entertaining encounter which also embroiled William Stephenson and Dale Whiteman, the marshals’ favourite as he often coordinates Silverstone’s
Andrew Caird was the only non-finisher as he retired after lap ten. Fellow newcomer Bruce Carter enjoyed a steady race and finished mid table, just narrowly missing out on the top ten by 0.2 of a second. So much was his relief at finishing first, maybe Blake-Baldwin’s focus went a bit awry as he took the chequered flag – twice! In his wake were Baldwin, Hart, Tucker, Craig, Brent, Fisk, Tony Liversidge, Cockburn-Evans and Woods rounded out the top ten. BRSCC championship coordinator Drew Furlong summarised the event by saying: “To start the 2014 championship with split grids due to the large number of entries is fantastic, and bodes well for the rest of the season. “Congratulations to JJ who took both wins. Mind you, he didn’t get the fastest lap in either race which means there are some quick drivers in the pack behind him. With 18 races to go it’s only just warming up!” Tom Roche or no Tom Roche, the championship looks to be going from strength to strength.
