I believe there is value in being out of context; this is not to ignore the surrounding situation but rather to explore ideas, knowledge or experiences from outside of the obvious.

Fifth year design was graded through exhibition with the Utopia unit displaying alongside 6 other design units. The units were initially allocated spaces by the head of year, but this draft left my unit (3) with a comparably smaller and more difficult space than other units. An issue compounded by the experimental nature of the Utopia unit. In order to get sufficient space for my team I took leadership of my unit, holding discussions with other units. leading to me proposing a new layout to the other units. My proposed layout was demonstrably fairer in terms space per person which helped to convince the year group to adopt it. The layout was also used for the end of year exhibition.

Project: Plastic waste in the Built Environment : A Method for recycling plastic waste into bricks
90 A Method for
Abstract: Value and Relevance The mismanagement of plastic waste has been of growing concern in recent times. In dealing with this ongoing crisis, governing bodies such as the EU have been setting a series of targets for higher recycling and recovery rates that member states must achieve by a certain date. The UK is yet to meet the 2020 target of 50% recycle and recovery for household waste, with some of the methods currently used under scrutiny. There is therefore an interest in new outlets that the UK can use to convert its plastics waste into products and services. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to examine the current shortcomings of the UK waste management system and suggest a solution from the field of architecture, design, and engineering. The aim is to select a product and analyse its suitability to provide a new outlet for the recycling of plastic waste. Methodology This thesis makes use of a literature review and data analysis to analyse the plastic waste management problem within the UK, leading to the presentation of a criteria for potential solutions. This criteria is then used 3 times within the study; first to select a type of intervention from the field of architecture, design and engineering, and secondly to select a product relevant to the chosen type. From here, further literature review alongside a series of experiments that were carried out with a prototype of the product were used to quantify the product’s potential to satisfy the established criteria. Limitations This thesis will focus exclusively on a solution appropriate for the UK. Within the experiments there was limited access to equipment, which meant procedures had to be altered. Due to cost and time limitations the sample of material produced to study was quite small. Expected Findings The initial literature review and data analysis will provide an applicable criteria. This will then be used to assess the common types of intervention from the field of architecture, design and engineering, and select a product. This product will be presented against the criteria to assess its potential.
Feedback : “ The student has engaged with a real-life problem and has produced an excellent test protocol with high quality analysis and data presentation. This is a dissertation that should be viewed as the 1st year of a PhD. The work is of real importance and should trigger further experimentation and testing. The department should recommend this student for a faculty scholarship to allow this work to continue.

Story of Beauty
Brief: To create a piece of artwork based on a beauty in built environment lecture
The piece tells a story over 5 equal panels representative of different times going from past through present into a utopian idea. The time periods (from left to right): 1 - Prehistory 2 - Ancient History 3 - Industrial revolution to Post WWII 4 - The Digital Revolution to Present day 5 - My Utopian Design project: Eden I became fascinated by the notion that beauty comes from a system of chaos and order, beauty as found in truth. How beautiful solutions last the test of time. The idea of bringing the unbeautiful into a system thatcreates beauty through a new balance drove my 5B design project (see prior). Dividing each of the 5 time periods into a secondary grid of 6 x 10 allows smaller stories to play out across time periods whilst alluding to the density of life and the diversity of beauty: with focus on human influenced beauty. For example the journey of reaching new heights from trees > columns > Skyscrapers > Space travel > floating forests of Eden. The grid displays stories of continuous repetition that is parameter guided, elements similar (order) and elements different (chaos).

Roof Plan
I was added to the project after an unfortunate discovery of a pipeline running across the centre of the site had led to an original design being thrown out. Andrew allowed me a lot of freedom to work together towards a solution. We used the existing age group split (Baby and Toddler, Young Children and OSHC) to create 3 wings and retained the existing house for a staff area, this split allowed a protected outdoor play area for smaller children with the wings providing good passive surveillance. This was also the first car parking plan I done. The DA I drafted had been accepted when I left IDW with work on the BA about to begin.

Andrew had a working relationship with St Mary’s College having recently completely several major works on the school, I was tasked with modelling the school for future work to be done. I modelled the building in Vectorworks from old floor plans mixed the recent drawing files from the works. Each area had been previously dealt with in isolation mainly due to the complexity of the site and the hill. I made 2 gifs of the model cycling through the floors. We were then asked to propose a method to make the school more disability friendly as the nature of the current school campus was unsuitable for students with certain disabilities. Through analysis I suggested a location and modelled up the proposal onto the new masterplan model, providing the client with quick renders.

My Role I was assigned to the project after an initial planning application had been lodged but met complications with being over budget, in response the client scrapped the addition of a second structure deciding to add on additional elements to the holiday home instead. In terms of design much of the internal plan remained the same from the previous DA, my role was to design and draw the new additions (the new facade, roof and decking). Alongside Architect Andrew Williamson we met with the client twice to agree to changes and confirm the design. I drew up a revised DA which was submitted and accepted and subsequently worked on the Building Application, being responsible for detailing, making adjustments with the correspondence of a structural engineer.

Brief: Provide renders to a client for sales purposes. House 1 Back Garden Render 1
House 1 Back Garden Render 2
My Role A Client (Building Developer) required a set of renders to use as the promotional material to sell 2 houses previously designed by Andrew. I modelled the buildings from the existing Vectorworks file using the drawing information to assign textures etc, before rendering with the internal Renderworks package. This gave me a great opportunity to familiarise myself with the software as well as the IDW way of laying out drawings as I spent a few days consulting the BA for the necessary information. After a meeting outside of town we drove past the building site and I got a proud photograph next to the for-sale sign with displaying one of my renders.

I was tasked with reworking a design after a more experienced member of staff left, the workBA-203 1:50 @ A3 turned out to be more complex than initial thought as elements that were supposed to already have been resolved were not. This included an issue with trying to ensure the access ramp 01-02-2017 connecting the barge to the marina was optimised for compliance for the maximum amount of time. With this work being overdue when I received it, I had to work quickly in an area of detailing that was completely new to me, I had to calculate the angles based on low and high tide and was quite happy with my contribution to the design. The seating area was also redesigning to swell out in the middle to allow more circulation space behind it.

The Project My understanding of artist Roddy Buchanan was that his art was based in observation: trying to notice things often missed and gift attention to these small discoveries. It was therefore important that my facade design delivered mechanisms for Roddy to engage in the 2 elements: Observation and Display. A range of viewpoints for the artist is given through the rooftop balcony and mid-level box windows. A step back from the street creates a invite to pedestrians as well as a wall to project current work to the public.

The Project During the class site visit I spent some time thinking about what site to pick while skipping stones, this experience became the seminal inspiration for the rest of the project. The library form was influenced by 2 concepts: the ripple patterns generated by a skipping stone and the tide retreating to reveal unseen forms. The site closest to the sea was chosen with the site being treated as though a stone had skipped across it. From a practical aspect the size had multiple approach directions from the existing university library in the south and street access from the north. The ripples addressed these approach paths to provide a passage through the library.

3rd Year : Exchange Building Technology Project: City
of Justice: a New Law
Brief : To analyse a given building (City of Justice by David Chipperfield), model in detail in Rhino then change the facade using grasshopper.
City of Justice Analysis
The Project
Development of new law
For this project I was assigned a building (City of Justice by David Chipperfield) to first analyse from a building technology perspective and model using Rhino. From there the task was to suggest an adjustment to the building facade and justify the change: the changed facade had to be modelled in Rhino using the Grasshopper plug in. This was my first time using either software. The City of Justice has an austere and authoritative presence which is rigid and orderly but to the point of being anti-people. I perceived that it could be more playful and inviting whilst still following strict rules: hence the introduction of a new law to the facade. The new rule introduced diminishing sin waves to the facade to keep the top rigid but the bottom more inviting. This was also inspired by the Frank Gehry [Dr Chau Chak Wing] Building on campus at UTS.

The Project The Hoptimist was an optimistic approach to engaging the topic of alcohol by trying to add a sense of pride and value to the process of brewing. Using a solar panel pink light hydroponic farming system to grow hops in Scotland : the only ingredient in beer that is not currently grown in Scotland. With the recent rise of craft beer and Scottish brands like Brewdog and Innis & Gunn it seemed like this was an industry on the up that could bring value and attraction to Govan. The elements of this project that I am proud of centre around the analysis of a set of complex processes and breaking that down into usable data. The building tries to do a lot of things, but it is most successful in the way it connects its internal hop growing process and in the way it was to engage with the other members of the masterplan.

My Brief: To design the exhibition stands for the 36 A0 sheets displaying the groups work. My Role - Surveying the Building With a brief window of access before the date of occupation, I led a small group to quickly survey the site. Producing a useful model on my laptop. -D Designing the frames For the frames we exclusively used wood reclaimed from the end of year exhibition. By taking initial stock of the available wood I was best able to design in way which ensured we would not need to purchase any more material for my aspect of the exhibition. After consulting with a few team members I came up with a McIntosh inspired design, using some quick renders, I was able to get the approval of the other 33 team members

- Building the Frames The Night before we had access to the site I organised the necessery timber, cut to the required sizes and labelled for transport. I generated working drawings of the frames from the design model which I used on site to direct my team mates in assembling the frames. - Opening Night Opening night was a great sucess, highlighted by an inspiring presentation given by Architect David Page of Page Park Architects.
