amusement park 游乐园
ə’myoozmənt pärk An amusement park, in other words a theme park, is a commercialised park of various operations fulfilling the purpose of entertainment. Forms of entertainment include but are not limited to subjects such as rides, events, exhibition galleries and spaces that revolve around F&B and its services. Such parks are operated with intent to spark joy in all age groups. The brief of this environment design leads to a key visual of Underland, a conceptual amusement park that intends to challenge the notions of real-world applications of architecture applied to a fantastical setting. Inspirations are derived from a myriad of cases and the design aims to incorporate and portray traditional Eastern elements into a traditionally western notion.
Underland /’ʌndɚ/ llɛnd A play on the word‘Wonderland’ , Underlend is the title given to the amusement park being conceptually designed for in this instance. Its name directly refers to the park being situated ‘underground somewhere’and lending pockets of its own space to house obedient residents or devour disliked customers by its own means. The park is actually a state of limbo that shifts its appearance according to its owner’s subconscious at that present time. Thus it continues to conceptually exists through passing of ownership, from one owner to the next. The mild-mannered and curious Elizabeth will be the unfortunate victim down this rabbit hole. Thus perpetuating this venomous cycle.

Eli is a simple character creation that was inspired by the demure and wonderful creation of Alice in Lewis Caroll’ s literature series “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland”. Originally an old concept with no background, she is reformed into a character used to give context to the new environment design. Elizabeth loses her way home, finds herself trapped in Underlend, an amusement park that both happily accomodates and cunningly devours its residents in various ways. The park relies on ascending a chosen resident to become the next manager, allowing it to continue operations. After a prolonged period of entrapment, she survives many hardships-- only to be retitled as‘Eli’and resentfully take over the place as the next CEO of the park. Scr ap p ed ver sion , E liza.

Title: Play Contract Developer: Superflex + KWY.studio Year of construct: 2021 Site area: Billund, Denmark Common materials: Pink marble Program: Holds the concept of a playground to contemporary means. The design is based on children notions of adult mannerisms instead of vice versa. For this, 122 children were given 100,000 pink LEGO bricks to build models for playgrounds, which were then analyzed and cast into 5 final designs. It displays in the form of a collage of whimsical shapes and ideas. The design challenges adults to perceive the world and aspect of time through children’s eyes. Surface finishes were minimal, allowing the form of the blocks to change and be subject to environmental conditioning.
