DeAr CaR NOT POPULAR

I just moved to a new school in my junior year. At my old school I was popular, but now I’m completely alone. I’ve tried to make friends, but everyone already has their group and they’ve all been together forever. I even sit alone at lunch—so embarrassing. I just don’t get it. I’m pretty, welldressed, confident...so what’s wrong? Even guys don’t like me. (Before, a lot of boys wanted to date me.) I’ve always been the popular girl, and now I’m nothing. I try to be cool on the outside, but inside I am crying and just want to hide. Sometimes I feel like this is karma because at my old school I never talked to the new people who were by themselves or accepted other people into my group unless they were athletes or something. Maybe I’m so focused on popularity that I ignore the people who aren’t so popular. I’m becoming a loner and it scares me.

Dear Not Popular,

Hey, school just started, right? Things are bound to get better, particularly if you stop hiding and start being friendly to all sorts of kids— the so-called “popular” ones and the less-visible-but-every-bit-aswonderful ones. Join an after-school club (a sport or chorus?) and you will meet people. Don’t think about being popular; think about making friends. You know how. Say “hi,” smile, give compliments (“I love your shoes/ring/essay/voice”) and ask questions (“What did you think of that book/movie/song/announcement?”). Look for other people who need friends. You’ll be fine. But, yes, it’s always challenging to move, and I’m glad this introspection is helping you find your compassionate side.

16 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015

MAD AND SAD

I’m in seventh grade. At our school’s semiformal dance, I told my best friend about my crush. She said we’d be adorable together. Now, less than a month later, she texts him 24/7 and they’re basically a couple. What’s worse is that she has sent him screenshots of our conversations. Plus, she knew that someone else liked her, and she said she liked him, but now this kid she used to like is heartbroken because she swapped him for his best friend (the boy I like). I don’t know what to do.

Dear Mad and Sad,

Your friend definitely broke the “sisters before misters” code, didn’t she? On the other hand, you and this guy were not officially a couple. Your best bet now is to let go of your resentments, and focus on noticing other guys and making friends with other girls. Can you join a club? Band? Student government? Literary magazine? Hang with new people.

Friendships shift a lot at this stage, but I’m hoping your BFF realizes that most middle school sweethearts eventually do break up...whereas many close friends often stay friends forever.

IMMATURE

How do I become mature in general? My dad says I’m immature for my age.

Dear Immature,

One way to become more mature is to read books and memoirs, watch movies and documentaries, and find role models so you can learn from other people’s successes and setbacks. Volunteering also can help you gain valuable perspective. Even babysitting or assisting senior citizens broadens your outlook and puts you in others’ shoes. If you spend Saturdays at the mall, consider visiting a museum or library or park instead. If you read celebrity blogs, switch to something with more depth. The point is to expand and learn— but you can remain a kid at heart!

DIARY TROUBLES

My younger sister is always ruining my diaries. In the past, she ripped out pages and tore them into little pieces or used Wite-Out to cover things up. The latest thing she did was to erase everything I wrote about her, good or bad. I try to be nice, but every time she needs to let out steam, she takes it out on my diaries. I have told my mom, but my mom thinks I am making a big deal out of nothing.

Dear Diary Troubles,

I think diaries are very important, and it’s great that you keep them. They help you to observe the world more closely, and when you put your experiences into sentences, you think about your life and also become a better writer. As for sibling troubles, it’s not OK for your sister to tamper with your words! I suggest hiding your diary—behind books, under the mattress, or in your closet. If you’re leaving your diary out in plain sight, it makes sense that she’s curious. You’d be curious if the tables were turned, right?

PERIOD

Two months ago, I got my first period. It lasted for nine days and wasn’t heavy or light, but moderate. Last month I got it again, and it was really heavy but lasted only about six days. Do I have an irregular period? Should I worry?

Dear Period,

I’m not a doctor, but it sounds like your body is sorting itself out. When a girl reaches puberty, the change does not happen all at once. If you continue keeping track, in a few months you’ll have a good idea about what your usual cycle is like. In short, no worries!

SAD GRANDDAUGHTER

One of my grandmothers died this morning. I’m scared because I have read so many books about how one person dies and the whole family falls apart. I realize

these are fictional, but fiction is based on truth. I also know everything will not be the same as it was, but I’m hoping we can achieve some degree of normalcy. Can you confirm or dismiss my fears?

Dear Sad Granddaughter,

A grandparent’s death doesn’t always cause a family earthquake. Sometimes it just leaves everyone a little sad and subdued for a while. Give your parents extra hugs and share your happy memories. If your granddad is alive, write a note and tell him you are thinking of him. Try to be understanding if a parent, aunt or uncle is tearful or moody. Your family will find a new “normal” soon. After an elderly person dies, a family often grieves but carries on, never forgetting the grandparent but not sobbing constantly, either. In fiction, you’re right, there are often giant feuds or deathbed confessions because

drama keeps readers turning pages. I wish your family the best as you remember your grandmother. I’ll bet it’s a comfort to them that she lives on in you.

NO LONGER IN LIKE

I’ve liked this boy for over a year. The problem is I liked him for so long and, when he finally liked me back, I stopped liking him. I’m in eighth grade and we’re “dating,” but I don’t know how to end it. We are good friends, and it’s fun to be with someone who likes me. I just don’t feel the same. How can I tell him without having everyone know?

Dear No Longer in Like,

You can tell him that you’re sorry, but you realized your feelings have changed. It’s about you, not him, and he deserves to be with someone who really, really cares about him. Explain that you’re not ready

GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015 17

DeAr CaRoL CRUSHING

I have been crushing on this guy since the first day of school. I told him on the third week how I feel, but all he said was “thank you” and then he asked my name. Lately, he keeps staring at me but never says anything. I’m not sure if he likes me and is dropping hints, or if he’s just looking. My friends have put me in really awkward positions where they try to talk to him while I’m there. I don’t want to be stuck on him while other potential guys pass me by. I feel like he’s playing with my emotions and doesn’t even know it. Can you please help me?

Dear Crushing,

You told him you like him, and he heard you. Now smile and say “hi.” He might be shy but is paying some attention to you, so who knows? I doubt he’s playing with you; he’s probably just not sure himself what to do next. Be brave and ask if he’s going to the haunted house event. If things don’t change in a few weeks, talk yourself out of this crush and move on.

for a boyfriend and you’d rather go back to being friends. Will it be difficult and awkward? Maybe. But you won’t be the first couple to break up. And, hey, you didn’t sign a contract vowing eternal commitment. Know that it’s OK to set him and yourself free, perhaps before the holidays. Just be kind, and don’t dissect this with all your friends.

WORRIED

My brother just started college, and he is living in a dorm. I know he will be OK, but what about my mom? She’s very sad about his leaving. Plus, after she adjusts, she’s still going to be lonely since my dad goes to work and I go to school. She’s by herself a lot, and when I get home, I’m doing homework and my dad is busy with other stuff. How can I let her know I’m there for her, especially since she never wants to talk about this?

Dear Worried,

The transition might be hard, but your mother is lucky that you are still under her roof. It is up to her to find ways to fill her time with meaningful, productive and fun activities—this is not your responsibility. That said, it might | NOVEMBER 18 2015 00GL GLOCTOBER APRIL | MAY 2014

be thoughtful to cook with her or run errands or co-host a parent-daughter pumpkin-carving party. It’s sweet that you care, and you could leave a note that says, “Mom, I miss him, too. Do you want to take a walk with me tomorrow or decorate the house for Halloween?”

OLD FRIEND

My BFF has been wanting to know everything I do. I moved to a nearby school and made tons of new friends, and I’ve been hanging with them a lot. My BFF doesn’t have too many friends, and I’m scared she will get jealous if I tell her about my new crew. She and I have been friends for a long time. What should I say?

Dear Old Friend,

Your tone matters as much as your words. You never have to reveal every detail of what you’ve been up to, but you can be honest without being hurtful. Consider, for instance, the impact of saying, “Carrie and I went to a movie. Hey, want to go to a movie on Saturday?” over “I’ve been hanging out with Carrie and Steph and Rachel and Julia and Elise. What have you been up to?” You also might want to encourage your

BFF to meet more people. She’s way into theater? Tell her how awesome she would be in drama club or joining stage crew or making costumes.

ENOUGH ALREADY

One of my friends texts me nonstop. When she has problems, she asks me what she should do. Sometimes, I don’t know how to reply. How do I tell her, without being mean, that I can’t always solve her problems and that she gets on my nerves?

Dear Enough Already,

Just because she sends a text does not mean you need to reply. You can also say, “I wish I had all the answers, but I just don’t. Sorry! See you tomorrow in school.” By the way, even Dear Carol doesn’t have all the answers! Carol Weston has been GL’s “Dear Carol” since the first issue. Her 14 books include Ava and Taco Cat, Ava and Pip, Girltalk, and the Melanie Martin series. Her website is carolweston.com, and her videos about friends, family and love are at youtube.com/girltalkwithcarol.

beauty hacks

makeovers

Easy, luxe looks for the dance...

School mornings mean zero time. (Plus, who’s awake enough to craft a clever new beauty look before breakfast?) Go beyond gloss ‘n’ mascara with these moments of celeb-inspired cuteness.

1. Pretty in purple

5. Pair pink with your plaid

Zendaya proves the plum perfect way to add color is with a mega dose of lavender. To make it more appropriate for English class, pick one shade of sheer lilac shadow and swipe it across your lower lid.

We love skipping fall’s standard red in favor of GL’s signature shade for autumn. Hot pink lips are cute and effortless—try ’em gorgeous and glossy or muted and matte.

2. Speed up your blowout

To make lashes look miles long, apply a lengthening and a volumizing mascara, says celeb makeup artist Liz Fuller. Erika Tham amps her eyes even more by rocking gold shadow on her bottom lash line.

To flash-dry your strands, shower as soon as you wake up and pat your hair dry with a towel. Celeb stylist Dugg Kirkpatrick says to spritz damp strands with a blowdry spray to speed up the blowout process. A little effort today means perfect hair for two to three days straight.

3. Get bolder brows

Filling in brows can draw attention to your eyes, says Christina Flach, CEO of Pretty Girl Makeup. Use a shadow the same color as your arches to rock a polished look.

4. Bow down

Ribbons fluttered down the fall runways as pretty, pared-down headbands, but we like Bella’s cheerleader-inspired look best. Cut 18 inches of ribbon, carefully notch a “V” shape into the end, pull your hair into a pony and get tying. Rah, rah, rad.

6. Fake falsies

7. Double up the liner

We’re obsessed with Dove Cameron’s genius liner trick. Apply a taupe shadow along your lash line. Then, use a bronze shadow the same way, starting from the inner corner of your eye. Repeat!

8. Toss on a hat

Why not go metallic? “Copper shadow is nice with a smudge of brown liner and a lot of mascara,” says Liz. Done. _

Just because flashes will be popping doesn’t mean you have to go all smoky eye + red lip + fake nails + spray tan.

Skin is everything.

To ace that base, Christina stresses the importance of hydrating and moisturizing, cleansing skin *every* night and sipping on lots of beauty-boosting nutrients (head to girlslife.com/iti for her juice recipe).

Second-day strands, a matte nude lip and a black, brimmed fedora will give you instant swagger.

9. Pretty penny

Ask yourself...is this really me?

Glow, glow, glow.

The ethereal look rules right now. To rock strobing right, use a fan brush to apply powder highlighter to the high parts of your face (cheeks, forehead, down the center of nose), says Henry Vasquez, head makeup artist of Hot Makeup Professional. If your skin’s lit up, keep the rest of your look low-key.

Pretty fall polishes Autumn’s best manis are deep, moody hues. To nail the coolest-ever paint job, pair up two complementary colors and rock one on the left hand, one on the right (which is what the smarties at Dior did for the fall show).

GUYS Q&A by bill and dave BILL Instead of outright accusing her boy of bad behavior, subtly suggest he might not be the dream dude she deserves. If she asks why, just say you’ve heard some things about him she should consider. Then, let her come to her own conclusions. DAVE She might not dump this guy until the truth stares her in the face. You can drop hints, but she needs to figure this out for herself. Just make sure you’re there for her if the breakup happens.

My BF broke up with me, saying he wasn’t ready for a GF. Well, lately, he acts like he likes me, and I still like him. Do we have a chance?

BILL Hmm…it probably involves the Male Ego, which we’ll shorten to ME. A guy might feel flattered to be asked out by a girl, but ME dictates that anything good that happens to a guy is a result of his own actions. So find a way to ask him out while making it seem like he asked you. Since Feminine Intelligence has a way of working around ME, you’ll surely come up with something inventive. DAVE It depends on the guy and the girl. Incredibly, several girls have asked me out. Each time, I wound up having a great experience. Is it because I’m totally attracted to assertive gals who have the guts to ask me out? Maybe. So, are you the type of girl who’s got enough moxie to ask out a guy? Your call.

I really like this guy, but he gets into trouble all the time. He has nice qualities, too, but I’m afraid hanging out with him will ruin my rep. What should I do? BILL There’s trouble, and then there’s TROUBLE. Telling jokes in class is trouble. Stealing the principal’s car and driving to Vegas is TROUBLE. Figure out what sort of “trouble” he really is before you get too involved. A good rep is pretty priceless. DAVE Don’t second-guess your doubts. You probably have ’em for good reason. 38 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015

If you’re worried about your reputation, keep your distance until he cleans up his act. For better or worse, we are judged by the company we keep. But more important than what others think is the possibility you could end up going down the wrong road with this guy. Then you’ll have more than just your rep to worry about. I’m pretty sure my friend’s boyfriend is using her. I want to tell her, but I’m afraid she’ll take it the wrong way. What’s the best way to handle it?

Dude Demystifier Why do guys never notice when you get a haircut or new clothes? News flash! Not all guys spot the great stuff, like glitter polish, that we’re not supposed to miss. Or it could be he doesn’t dig your new pixie ’do. So rather than hurt your feelings, he figures he’ll keep his trap shut. Can you go for a guy who doesn’t get the subtlety of baby blond highlights? That’s up to you.

What do guys really think about girls asking them out? I’ve heard it shows confidence, but guys I know say they’d never go out with a girl who made the first move.

DAVE Many guys aren’t great at showing affection, expressing feelings or any other stuff that doesn’t involve sports or video games. Give him credit for leveling with you, but his recent actions mean you might have a (second) chance. BILL Your guy is aware enough to know he wasn’t up for a GF at the time. If he had jumped into a relationship before he was ready, it would have failed anyway. Hang in there without being clingy and you just might be in the right place at the right time.

THE “YOU ARE ALL KILLING ME” DAY

Mom is on your case about grades. Next, your bestie acts weird because you were studying with the new girl. Then, your regular babysitting client texts that little Emma has two friends sleeping over on your watch (“That’s cool, right?”). Can’t someone talk to you without complaining or making demands? BUST IT Everyone needs a little alone time— especially when it seems like you’re just not vibing with anyone. So take yourself out of the equation for a bit: Hit the library for some solo study time or go to your room and spend an hour indulging in PLL on Netflix. Even better? Take a walk or bike ride. A solo sesh recharges your batteries and helps keep you tolerant—so you can flip your day from bad to better.

THE DARK CLOUD DAY

44 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015

THE OVER-BEFOREIT-STARTS DAY

You woke up with your period, your mom shrunk your fave tee in the dryer and your little bro ate the last strawberry Pop-Tart…all before 7:30 a.m. Ugh! BUST IT Feels like things are spiraling? You can totally take action, even if you only have a few minutes. Stop and take a moment to breathe. Head back to your room, sit on your bed and close your eyes, then slowly inhale and exhale. Experts say the silence and deep, calming breaths can help snap you out of your funk—and fast.

THE SUDDEN SWITCH-UP DAY

You and your new BF made a date to grab eel rolls and then brave Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension together. It turns out he has to bail because his travel soccer team made it to the playoffs. You’re beyond bummed. BUST IT Instead of snapping at him or being sad that things didn’t work out as planned, smile and show your support by being on the

THE VERY BAD, VERY SAD DAY

Maybe you’re dealing with a breakup. Or your dog is at the vet. Or Gram is taking a turn for the worse. Whatever it is, you’re super upset and not sure if you can make it. BUST IT We all have horrendous days when life deals a dagger to the heart. But getting through the really tough stuff makes you stronger. How to deal? First, know it’s OK to be bummed. Face your emotional overload with a good cry—then slap cold water on your face and will yourself to move forward. Need an extra boost? Play your fave upbeat song on repeat or watch some silly vids on YouTube. Even if there’s nothing light about what’s happening, a little LOLing reminds you that tomorrow is another (better) day. _

aving a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day? Yeah, we’ve been there too. But the great thing about yucky days is that they don’t last forever—and you can change the course of ’em before they get any worse. Here’s how to bounce back when things just don’t go your way.

Choir rosters are posted, and you got cut. On top of that, you forgot the brownies for your class bake sale. Later, your swim coach yells at you for being late to practice...again. It’s like you can’t do anything right today. BUST IT When the hits keep coming, remember that mistakes and failures happen—but they don’t define you. Focus on all that’s great in your world. Look at your fave pics or reminisce about a time when you felt absolutely awesome. Jot down positive aspects as a solid reminder that life’s not so bad.

B

ea Miller is no stranger to sass. Between belting out lyrics like “And I never will be the girl who says sorry” and firing off impassioned tweets, this 16-year-old songstress is more punk than pop. Need more evidence? Just take a look at her debut album title— Not an Apology—and you get the sense straight away that Bea’s got swagger. “I don’t really have a filter. I always speak my mind and own my opinion,” she says. “I think a lot of girls my age are afraid to share what they think. I want to show them you don’t have to be scared to say what you feel. You don’t have to apologize for what you believe.” It’s this cool, sorry/not-sorry confidence that has helped skyrocket the singer to fame since she competed on season two of The X Factor in 2012. Whether she’s opening up to her fans (aka “BEAsts”) via social media or delivering raw, soulful lyrics, it’s easy to see why Bea is so beloved.

NOT YOUR TYPICAL FAIRY TALE

Bea speaks her truth, especially when it comes to the tough stuff she’s gone through in life. While her meteoric rise in the music industry might seem like a dream come true, Bea is quick to say things aren’t always so simple. “It was really hard for me to move across the country,” Bea shares about moving from New Jersey to Los Angeles to start her career. “I didn’t want to leave my home but, at the same time, my parents were struggling a lot with money. We couldn’t afford to stay in the house we had. It almost made it easier for my mom and I to move because if we hadn’t, the five of us would have all been living in one small twobedroom apartment.” Bea and one of her moms now live in L.A., while her other mom lives with her twin sisters, Esther and Georgia, back in Jersey. Although Bea doesn’t regret follow-

ing her dreams, she admits it’s pretty hard to be away from so much of her family. “It’s sad to think about how I wasn’t always grateful for family dinners and game nights,” she says. “Family is everything.” That’s a lesson she passes along to her fans, reminding them on Twitter to give their moms hugs. “I used to get so annoyed when my mom would make me come home from hanging out with my friends just so we could all eat together,” she says. “Now I know those are the most important things in life.”

REACHING OUT

Something else Bea wants girls to know? It’s OK to not be OK. “When I was younger and having a hard time, I’d turn on the radio and hear these upbeat songs. Listening to them, it felt like life was great for everyone else and I was the only one sitting there alone with my troubles,” she confesses. So when it came time for Bea to make her own music, she wanted to share a different message. “I think it’s awesome to tell people life is not amazing every single day,” she says. “You’re going to have struggles, and it’s OK to admit that. We all have those moments, but when you can connect with someone through a song, it’s really powerful.” When Bea needs to hear that message herself, she turns to her favorite artist, English folk musician Keaton Henson. “He has a song for every emotion. His album Romantic Works is all orchestration, no lyrics. You can find whatever you’re feeling in it, and it really feels like he understands you.” Similarly, connecting emotionally with fans is Bea’s fave thing about making music. “I’m happy to be there for them when they feel like they can’t talk to anyone else. Knowing that someone isn’t going to judge you is important, and it’s so cool to me that I get to be that someone for other teens.” Continued on page 84 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015 49

P

ICTURE THIS: You’re all set to play piano at a talent show when you’re suddenly asked to sing instead. No worries—you simply climb onstage, take a breath and…blow everyone away. That’s exactly what happened to Skylar Stecker, whose natural vocal talent emerged when she was in third grade— and she’s never let her age stop her since. As the youngest artist ever signed by Cherrytree Records/Interscope, Skylar’s first album This Is Me drops Sept. 25. While her sound is pop “with an edgy urban fierceness,” she’s not afraid to get sentimental with her songs. Take “Everlasting,” a ballad Skylar wrote about “how when you truly love someone, you’ll never let them go.” She shares, “I kept it universal so everyone can relate, but for me it’s about my mom.” Skylar also loves keeping it light, a vibe that shines clearly with her new music video for “That’s What’s Up.” Full of colors that pop, glitter balloons and one unforgettable pillow fight, she admits it’s her favorite vid she’s made so far. “It’s a really great message of empowerment. It talks about how you can fall down but get right back up, and how things can be even better than before.” That’s a lesson she learned after a mishap while prepping for a show. “I accidentally stepped on the cord for my headphones while dancing,” she spills. “I didn’t realize, and when I kicked, I accidentally launched them right at my choreographer! All I could do was laugh.” What’s Skylar up to when she’s not high-kicking across the stage? You’ll likely find her whipping up delish vegan dishes. “I’d love to open a restaurant one day,” she says. “It would be called ‘Star Vegan,’ and I would take all of these dishes that I already love and Skylar-fy them.” The Skylar-fy secret? “Lots of Sriracha.” If Skylar’s culinary savvy is as good as her singing skills, no doubt she’ll leave everyone hungry for more.

BOYFRIEND MATERIAL

Rahart Adams

I

n Nickelodeon’s Liar Liar Vampire, premiering in October, Rahart Adams plays a shy guy pretending to be a bloodsucker to snag popularity points. Offscreen? This 19-year-old cutie doesn’t have to fake a thing. Between his acting chops (he was Jax in Nick’s Every Witch Way) and Aussie charm (that accent!), Rahart is 100 percent the real deal… GL: Phew! In the past year, your acting career has kept your schedule slammed. Any plans for downtime? Rahart: Spend time with my family and friends. I’m from Australia, so I don’t get to see them as much as I’d like to. But when I’m home, we always have big family dinners and sit around eating and laughing for hours. Sounds amazing. So tell us about your role In LLV. I play Davis, the new kid in school. He’s moved a lot for his mom’s job, so he’s sort of decided that he won’t bother trying to make friends. But funny misunderstandings lead people to think he’s a vampire, and they start paying a lot of attention to him. With the help of his new friend Vi [Brec Bassinger], he decides to go with it.

What’s best about being a fake vampire? Wearing the cape and the contacts was pretty cool. Plus pretending to fly, of course. There were fun fight scenes, too. Whoa! What’s it like filming actionpacked fight scenes? Oh, it’s awesome. I grew up watching Power Rangers, so I thought I knew what to do. But learning the choreography was pretty hard. I was fighting with a staff for some scenes, and during one take I accidentally hit myself in the head. Embarrassing! Which would you rather be—a vampire or wizard? A wizard. You can do magic without having to worry about not going to the beach like vampires. Do you think you’ll be a wizard for Halloween? Halloween is not really a thing in Australia! I didn’t know how big it was until I saw everyone go crazy on set one year. But I love scary movies and dressing up. What’s the best costume you’ve ever worn? I went to one costume party as Stitch from Lilo & Stitch. It was awesome. Any good horror-flick recs for date night? Nothing too scary. If you actually get freaked out, it kind of ruins the romance. Understood. We’ll bring the popcorn! GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015 53

Your field hockey skirt has permanent grass stains from all the killer plays you’ve been making, but you’re still not a starter. What gives? You… A. Up your game ’til you’re first on the field. B. Talk to your teammates on the DL about the favoritism you suspect. C. Ask your coach flat-out what it will take to play more next time. 2. How to be BRAVE (even when you’re so not feeling it)

The thing about bravery is that it’s not about being a daredevil 24/7— it’s about recognizing you’re scared of something and doing it anyway. Pluck up your courage when you can. When you can’t, live by these rules... 1. Turn regrets into lessons. You didn’t step in for a classmate who was being picked on—and now you feel like dirt. File that guilt away (it helps no one!) and puff up the bravery next time you feel the urge to hesitate before taking action. 2. Embrace “I don’t know.” You don’t need to have an answer for every question. Stand firm, consider the question in private and come up with an answer on your own timeline. 3. Realize that change happens. Keep your focus fearlessly on what moves you today...and don’t worry about what’s coming at you down the line. 4. Focus on your allies. Haters in your midst? Let the support of everyone in your corner fuel you to go far. 5. Just start. There is never a perfect time to start something, whether it’s a biz, charity, club or vote-for-me-forprez campaign. If you go ahead and leap into a project, you’ll find a way to land on your feet.

Think you and your bestie are close? Get even closer with BFF ambitions every friendship needs.

Your best friend is, well, the best! She’s been with you through tee ball, ballet and more sleepovers than you can count. You send her snaps by the hour, and you’ve even hashed out a plan to go to the same college, host a

double wedding and force your future kids to be BFFs. But even if your bestie status is rock solid, that doesn’t mean you can’t make it better. Reach these milestones and you’ll know your friendship is seriously #goals...

4

BRUTAL HONESTY Honesty isn’t always the best policy, but within your friendship you just can’t lie. Whether it’s the stuff that’s so hard to say (“Don’t hate me for this, but you really need a breath mint”) or the stuff you don’t want to hear (see above), you and your gal pal are never afraid to speak your minds. After all, if your best friend can’t tell you the truth, who can? Exactly.

THICK AND THIN BFFs are there through the good, the bad and the worst. Yup, even those seriously awkward sitches like that time she literally lost her lunch after some questionable grocery store sushi. Zany, horrific moments like this separate a good friend from a best friend. If you made it through holding her hair while she regurgitated raw fish, your friendship can take on anything.

TWINNING TELEPATHY Hitting the fro-yo place and picking her up a cup? You don’t have to text to know she’s craving cookies and cream with brownie bits on top. Truly tight twosomes know exactly what each other is thinking pretty much all the time. How? You’ve both put in the hours to build memories and care enough to remember the details, even if it’s just her dessert order.

ALWAYS UPFRONT You’re never passiveaggressive in order to protect your friendship. When it comes to your bestie, you don’t hesitate to let her know exactly when you’re annoyed or upset—because you never let resentment build to jeopardize your friendship’s future. Not to mention, one look at her “I’m sorry” puppy eyes and you can’t resist the urge to smile.

HER BIGGEST FAN There’s abso-tootin’-lutely no judgment between best friends. Even when your girl bursts into song in the checkout line at Target or cries hysterically during a not-evenremotely-sad scene at the movies (and you want to duck into a rack or sit a row behind), you just roll your eyes and laugh. You embrace her oddball behavior because she’s your favorite weirdo.

PRIORITIES IN ORDER Sisters before misters! Your crush du jour finally asks you out, but you’ve already got plans—and no guy will ever come between you and your bud. No doubt, there will be times you want to hang with your honey. But the bestest of buddies strike a balance between boy-time and girl-time, knowing you will always be each other’s numero uno priority.

CLOSE—EVEN WHEN YOU’RE APART She was away all summer at sleepaway camp or visiting with her dad and stepmom. Even when the weeks fly by, it’ll be like time is totally frozen— because you two always pick up right where you left off without any of the awkwardness. Uncomfortable silences? Bumbling chitchat? Twiddling thumbs? As if anybody’s got time for that!

HAPPY FOR HER, NO MATTER WHAT It happens: Sometimes your girl acts a tad selfabsorbed. Those days when she’s gushing about landing a solo in the school musical without even asking if you scored a spot? You’re a bit bummed for a sec, but you get it— and you’re truly happy for her. Besides, she always comes down from the clouds to ask, “Did you get a part?!”

GL’s Super Sticky School-Sitch

Survival Guide

Friend fights? Teacher terror? Academic overload? Here’s how to tackle the tough stuff that crops up— and get your year right back on track...

S

ure, dropping a tampon in the hallway right in front of your crush is enough to make you want to crawl into the closest locker. And spacing on a 10page paper until the night before it’s due is just about the worst. But some situations are a whole lot trickier—and have far more serious consequences if not handled correctly. That’s why we’re breaking down dicey dilemmas that can drag down your school day. Time to break out that highlighter...

SITUATION NO. 1

is a good thing, promise. It’s never too late to sort things out. Instead of turning away from her next time, say “Look, trying to ignore each other isn’t going to solve anything. Why don’t we...,” and take it from there. IF THAT DOESN’T WORK If being besties again is out of the question for now, aim for civility—however strained it might be. Acknowledge her with a nod and keep on walking. If you feel it’ll take a lot more time before forgiveness is an option, simply ignore her icy gaze. There’s no need to get sucked into theatrics, even if you’re sure there’s no shot of saving the friendship anytime soon.

Bad BFF Breakup You battled it out with a bud over the summer when you both crushed on the same cutie. Now, every time you pass her in the hall, she gives you the glare stare. SOLUTION You can’t avoid your former friend forever. Since you’re in the same building at the same hours, chances are that you’ll see her on the daily. The energy you’ll both sap trying to elude each other Monday through Friday can definitely be better spent elsewhere (like on patching things up). Going through the year with one less enemy 66 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015

SOLUTION First off, cut yourself some slack. Trouble processing all the info you’re bombarded with doesn’t mean your brain cells are shrinking. What is less than smart is falling so far behind that you’re stuck in a scholastic black hole by the holidays. You have a couple options for turning things around. One, you can join a study group. Two, you can tell your teacher you’re lost (after all, she is there to help you learn). IF THAT DOESN’T WORK Get a tutor. Many schools now offer free ones and, trust us, the relief of understanding the material is worth the extra study time (no more staring at your ankles every time the teacher is about to call on someone). Tripping over trig really isn’t a big deal—it just means you’re hitting a rough spot. The key is not to get frustrated with school in general.

SITUATION NO. 3

Sibling Invasion SITUATION NO. 2

Academic Panic You’ve always coasted through school, raking in good grades with minimum effort. Suddenly, for the first time, you feel clueless.

Your little sister now attends your school, and your parents expect you to be her shadow or something. There goes the independence you’ve worked so hard to achieve. What if she clings to you or (gasp!) tries to befriend your friends?

SOLUTION Take a sec to think about how your sib probably feels entering a new school. Remember when it was your turn and you were plagued with thoughts like “What if I don’t fit in?” We’re not saying you have to hold hands or even eat lunch with your sibling, but how much effort does it take to ask her how it’s going or if she needs anything? Your compassion will help her be a lot more confident—a quality she needs to make her own friends. IF THAT DOESN’T WORK If your sib drives you crazy with clinginess, introduce her to some of your friends’ younger sibs. That way, you can be there for her in the wings while she establishes a social standing. But in addition to the buddy system hookup, talk to your sib about how important it is for her to find her groove. Explain that if she’s truly going to thrive in her new environment, she has to put forth some effort in setting up her own circle and standing on her own two tootsies.

SITUATION NO. 4

Super-Glue Sistah The girl you hung out with for a month at drama camp now expects you to be best buddies at school. You’re back with your crew, sooo… SOLUTION We get it: Your close friends weren’t down with doing Shakespeare plays all summer and you needed a stand-in squad to hang with during vacay—so you befriended someone you wouldn’t normally hang with IRL. But can you ditch her now that school has started back up? We think you already

know the answer to this one. While you don’t have to hang with her around the clock or invite her to every single event that pops up, you should certainly be friendly, introduce her to your crew and include her whenever you can. Hey, she might fit right in. IF THAT DOESN’T WORK If inviting her to hang with your group just won’t work out, reserve solo time with her. She was there when you needed a camp chica *and* she shares your interests—so give it a chance. Yes, balancing your social scene can be tricky, but expanding your crew has loads of benefits, too.

SITUATION NO. 5

Agony of Defeat You practiced all summer to make the squad, only to be utterly and shamefully...rejected. You’re completely crushed. SOLUTION Not making the team stinks. But rather than wallowing in rejection (which is a total waste of time), remember there are plenty of other awesome activities out there. Didn’t make JV? Join an after-school intramural team. Weren’t elected class president? Check for any committees that need leadership. Plus, there’s probably an endless roster of other clubs and teams you haven’t even thought about joining. IF THAT DOESN’T WORK If you can’t shake that bummed-out feeling and you are absolutely dying to be part of a particular thing, start by asking what you need to work on to make it next time around. In the meantime? Ask whoever is in charge if they need any help. Could you be an assistant manager? Volunteer for a fundraiser? Stand in for theater rehearsal? By getting involved in some way, however small, you’ll make a significant impression by showing your determination to stick with it and to take constructive criticism. Those are qualities everyone wants on their team.

SITUATION NO. 6

Burnout, Baby Way back in summer, it seemed awesome to sign up for everything from Academic Bowl to yearbook staff. Now? Your schedule is packed...and your head is spinning. SOLUTION Sit down and list everything you do on a typical school day. Note all of your extracurricular and after-school activities, and go over the list item by item. For each entry, ask yourself, “Do I absolutely have to do this?” and, even more important, “Do I love it?” If so, check off the item. Look at each activity that remains unchecked, and ask, “What benefit do I get out of this?” Is it fun? Are you learning anything from it? If it’s working your nerves worse than those triplets you babysit on Saturdays, cross it off the list. IF THAT DOESN’T WORK Taking on more than you can handle would leave anyone feeling frazzled. While we’d never suggest you back out of firm commitments or give up on your goals, there are lots of ways you might be putting pressure on yourself that aren’t really worthy of your stress. Do you spend 30 minutes each morning ensuring your OOTD is Insta-worthy? Break into tears if you miss a goal during practice? Overthink about how you got beat out for the debate? Freak that you could have revised your post for the school newspaper instead of studying extra for your history exam? Get out of your own head and ease up on yourself. Find time to chill, go for a run or hang out with friends—and take the edge off of an unnecessarily stressful semester. _ GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015 67

DOES HE When it comes to your crush, are you like an open book—or are your feelings on lockdown? Take this quiz to find out... BY JIAE KIM 1. You’re hanging out by the BFF’s locker, waiting for her to get out of bio, when your crush walks up to ask if you’re going to this weekend’s football game. You… A. Turn beet red, stare at him for a second past creepy and excuse yourself as you run to the ladies’. He totally caught you off-guard! B. Sweetly say “yes” and then suggest your crew and his meet at halftime to grab snacks and catch up. C. Get super excited, then proceed to tell him what you’ll be wearing, where you’re sitting and dish details on the signs you made to cheer on the team. 2. You and your crush get picked to make the scenery for the fall play. You’re going to win him over by… A. Just being there. You’re not sure if you’ll be able to eke out a sentence around him, but being stuck with each other every day after school for the next two weeks sounds pretty cool. B. Showing off your amazing artistic abilities. No boy’s ever been able to resist your decoupage and DIY skills. C. Being by his side, no matter what. If he’s painting a tree, you’re handing him the paint. If he’s cutting out leaves, you’ve got a pair of scissors ready. 3. Ding! It’s a text message from your crush—a “hey” with a sunglass emoji. Your plan of action is to… A. Call up the BFF. After about two hours of discussion over the sunglass emoji, the two of you collectively decide that you should send back a “hey” with the wink emoji.

KNOW ? M I H E K YOU LI B. Wait 15 minutes, then shoot back a “hey, how are ya?” You also remember he has a big competition tonight and wish him luck. C. Immediately send him a “hiyee” with three exclamation points, followed by a “hello” with three question marks when he doesn’t respond right away.

4. You snag the spot behind your crush in the caf line. How do you spark a convo? A. He just so happens to drop a five on the floor, and you just so happen to pick it up for him. He says “thanks,” you say “you’re welcome.” End of story. B. You tell him how sweet it is for him to head the food drive this year and you’re down to volunteer your services. C. You compliment him on how good he looks in his baby blue shirt, then give his bicep a little squeeze. Hee. 5. Your crew, crush included, is heading out for a bite. Only prob? He’s suggesting the new gourmet burger joint—and you’re vegetarian. You… A. Say nothing. If everyone else is up for Burger Bistro, you don’t want to be the downer who spoils it for the group.

MOSTLY A’s

OFF THE RADAR We’re pretty sure a rocket scientist, let alone your crush, couldn’t decode the signals you’re sending. Maybe you think playing it cool and nonchalant is the way to go, but that can come off as distant and unapproachable. We get that you might be afraid of rejection, but nothing is going to happen between you unless you ’fess up those feelings. So instead of bolting every time he gets within 15 feet of you, open up and flirt a little. It’s OK to do it subtly—time to clue him in!

B. Tell him you’re vegetarian, but you can go with a portobello patty. Best of both worlds! C. Tell him he totally read your mind because you’ve been craving a doubledecker bison burger. It’s insane how in synch you two are.

6. Your crush is having a welcome-backto-school shindig at his house this weekend and makes a passing invite to your BFF. When she asks if you want to go with her, you… A. Sadly decline. You weren’t actually invited, so it’s not going to happen. B. Agree to stop by for about 20 minutes just to show your face. You heard he threw out invites to a ton of people, so the more the merrier…right? C. Jump at the opportunity and, to get some one-on-one time before people arrive, show up about 10 minutes early so you can help him set up. 7. As you’re hanging out in PE, your frenemy spills a little too loudly that you have a thing for your crush—and he totally hears from his spot on the b-ball court. You…

MOSTLY B’s

SPOT ON

You’ve done this before, haven’t you? You’re flirty enough to show your crush that maybe, just maybe, he has a chance. You send all the right signals without coming on too strong or causing him to feel uncomfortable. You let yourself be vulnerable, but you know you don’t have to lose yourself in the process. With that sort of chill confidence, you’re bound to be a crush magnet. When you do connect, just be sure to keep it on the flirty side so you don’t end up in the friend zone.

A. Get totally defensive and adamantly deny the charges. You’re so mortified. B. Feel yourself blush but don’t say a thing. Now that he knows, you’ll let your guy make the next move. C. Shout, “Yep, it’s true!” and use it as an opportunity to confess your feelings. It’s out in the open now, no point in wasting this lucky twist of fate. 8. You hop on the school bus and only two spots are open. One is next to your crush, the other beside this girl who plucks your last nerve. You… A. Grab a seat next to Miss Annoying. If you were to plop down next to your crush, it’d be so obvious to everyone that you’re totally in love with him. Besides, what would you talk about? B. Make eye contact with your crush before asking if he’d mind if you sit with him. Once you thank him and get settled, you make some light convo ’til you pull into school. C. Flash your crush the biggest grin and practically skip down the aisle as you sidle next to him. You’ll use the next 15 minutes to dazzle him with your amazing personality.

MOSTLY C’s

(A LITTLE TOO) LOUD AND CLEAR No doubt, he knows you like him. And we get it that you just can’t contain yourself around his cuteness. But playing a little bit hard-to-get or dropping a few subtle hints can be way more appealing than you might realize. It’s not all about broadcasting that you’re smitten—you want him to like you back, don’t you? The next time he chats you up, play it cool with a flirtatious smile rather than a full-on “I’m so into you” confession.

How I Deal With OCD and

Anxiety What my life with obsessivecompulsive disorder is really like. By Katy Herman, 20

hen I was in seventh grade, I couldn’t stop worrying that I was cheating on tests...even though I knew that I wasn’t. In the cafeteria, I’d buy my lunch and then, two seconds later, I’d doubt I had paid for it. I thought my fashion choices sent a scary message, so I wore the same T-shirt and jeans every single day. Sometimes I took multiple showers in an attempt to “wash away” the bad thoughts that came into my head. These are the kinds of things you do when you have obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) like I do. I have a ton of anxiety—bothersome thoughts I feel like I have to correct in order to be safe. While a lot of kids get worried or anxious, maybe even wearing a lucky necklace or sticking to a strict bedtime routine every night, people with OCD go to the extreme. We do irrational, repetitive things to control our anxiety and to avoid being overwhelmed by our worries. If we don’t, we might feel jittery, and have mood swings or even panic attacks. I started to display signs of the disorder when I was 4 years old. I cried all the time but couldn’t explain what was upsetting me. (It was a while ago, but I think I heard a story about something bad happening to another kid and so I was endlessly worried.) Even my parents didn’t understand what was wrong. A doctor diagnosed me with OCD and placed me on a medication that helps the chemicals in my brain transmit at a more normal pace. I also began seeing a therapist regularly, who works with me on facing my fears and helps me figure out ways to fight the urge to do compulsive things. That doesn’t mean OCD just goes away, though. For a long time, I tried to hide it from people and hoped my

strange behaviors would go unnoticed. Sometimes they did; sometimes they didn’t. I made up reasons for why I repeatedly bought the same item in the cafeteria or randomly sat down. I told my close friends it was OCD but didn’t go into much detail. They did their best to help. One gave me a charm to remind me to only buy one water bottle per lunch. Another even wrote a poem about my issues with anxiety. I’m lucky to have their support, but they’re not always around. And when I hear someone say “I’m so OCD” about a little thing, it gives me pause. To say something like that, or to make light of other mental health issues such as depression, trivializes the struggle that so many of us face. These feelings don’t just wear off—they are with me every single day. Due to the treatment I have received, I feel like a pretty normal, upbeat college student—most of the time. I still have some anxiety, and it occasionally inter-

OMG, do I have OCD? The National Institute of Mental Health estimates about 2.3 percent of adults in the United States have some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Many people, though, have little tics that can feel obsessive (like keeping your room super clean) but, most of the time, those are just habits. Concerned? Experts say that if your anxiety or behaviors interfere with your everyday life, seek out the advice of a doctor or counselor. Visit iocdf.org/find-help for ’round-the-clock resources from the International OCD Foundation.

feres with my life. When I’m scared to do things others aren’t, like eating at a new restaurant, I feel miserable. Because my rituals are less visible now, thanks to the techniques I’ve learned, it can be difficult for my friends and family to tell when my OCD is flaring up. When it does? I call my therapist, whom I trust like a good friend. She gets me, and is able to guide me through my frustrations and fears. Positive distractions help, too. I am at my best when I totally focus on something else like school, my fashion career—I love style writing and blogging—or an awesome night out with my friends. OCD hasn’t stopped me from having the life other girls have, but there are definitely moments when that life is more of a challenge. Many negative associations and misconceptions are attached to anxiety disorders. But the truth is that millions of people deal with emotional or mental health issues. If you’re one of them, there’s no need to be embarrassed or bury your worries. Today, I’m not ashamed to share my OCD story, but I wasn’t always so open. After many years of living with it, I now know there is no on/off switch for anxiety. For me, medication combined with therapy is the right treatment. Others may fare better with a different approach, but the first step is talking to a trusted adult who can help you understand what’s going on in your head. And if a friend is struggling? Just be there, make fun plans and never act like her fears are silly. Instead, ask what will help her feel better. There’s a big difference between pity and compassion. Everyone is unique, but I don’t like it when someone just gives me a sad face. I love it when they say, “How can I help?” It’s really that easy. _ GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015 73

GL SPECIAL REPORT

On top

of the world BY KELSEY HAYWOOD

T

urn on the news or scroll through Twitter and you’ll get just a small glimpse of all the issues affecting our world right now, from violence in our streets to climate change on every continent. But who can keep up with it all? Chances are, you do realize that your biggest problems (like memorizing math theorems) would be considered a privilege to girls in many other parts of the world. You probably want to know more and you want to get involved…but don’t have a clue where to start. This is called a knowledge gap, and it’s a huge obstacle facing teens today: The issues are big, complicated and sometimes scary; the resources can be conflicting and difficult to decipher. But according to author, activist and former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, it’s crucial that young people start getting involved now. The first step in making a difference? Becoming informed about the issues and why they matter.

74 GL OCTOBER | NOVEMBER 2015

In her new book It’s Your World: Get Informed, Get Inspired & Get Going (Penguin, $19), Chelsea offers a comprehensive and straightforward overview of some of the biggest challenges facing our generation right now. We sat down with her to learn how girls can make a difference, starting today.

GL: Why is it so important that girls are informed and involved?

Chelsea Clinton: It’s the title of my book and it couldn’t be more true: It’s your world. I mean, sure, it’s my world and your parents’ world, too, but girls are the future of it. You can just let things happen to you and let other people decide—or you can shape what happens today and what happens tomorrow. You have the power to build the world you want to see: in your own home and your own neighborhood and, more broadly, in your country and every country.

That’s something we don’t hear a lot! We can’t vote, we can’t drive, there’s so much we’re told we’re too young to do. But you’re saying we aren’t just able, we’re empowered to start taking a stance on really big, really important issues.

Yes! Absolutely. I started to feel I could make a difference when I was 11 or 12 years old. It helped set me a course for the rest of my life. I felt that if I really understood what a challenge was, and could come up with a potential solution, then I had an obligation to try to make a difference. And I wouldn’t believe it

so profoundly today if I hadn’t started engaging with the world as a kid.

So basically, there’s no time like the present—and the actions we take now will affect and shape the role we play in our world for the rest of our lives. But before you understood the big picture, how did you realize you had a duty to take on the world?

My parents did an amazing job of making sure I was always aware of how blessed I was; not just to be their child specifically, but because I had collegeeducated parents and I never had to worry about having a roof over my head, having food to eat, having clean water, having a school to go to or having them cart me around to softball games and ballet classes and piano lessons.

Easy things to take for granted.

Exactly—even though, unfortunately, they are things that aren’t a reality for many people in our community or in our world. So I realized that along with those blessings came a personal responsibility to get engaged. For me, it started manifesting in my intense concern about the environment and climate change when I was a kid. I was very concerned about the oceans, about what was happening under the seas, even though I lived in a landlocked state with no ocean around. But I loved whales and coral and imagining what was happening underwater— and, meanwhile, I was learning all about the degradation of life under the ocean. Really scary stuff.

So how did you deal with that concern when you were so far away from the issue?

My grandparents gave me a membership to the World Wildlife Fund, and that was great. It helped me feel like I was doing my small part from Arkansas to help protect the oceans. From there, I helped form a recycling program at my elementary school. It didn’t cost any money, only time and energy and effort. It was simple, but it was activism— activism that would have an impact on the health of our oceans regardless of how far away from them we were or how small the act of recycling seemed.

That’s awesome that you connected to a cause and were able to take action immediately. But what about girls who haven’t been struck by a particular issue? Where do we start?

Think about what you care about and, particularly, what has made you angry or frustrated about it recently. Whether it’s animals or something that’s happening in your school or town, take it and look at it from a broader perspective. It probably relates to so much else that’s going on in the world, and addressing it on a local level has the potential to make a global impact. That’s something I write a lot about in It’s Your World—how everything is connected, and how causes and reactions are sometimes really hard to discern from one another. Continued on page 79

AND HOW WAS YOUR DAY?

Monster mix-up

M

y friend dared me to scare someone at the Halloween dance, so I decided I’d spook my crush. But when I snuck up on him and jumped on his back, it wasn’t him after all! It was someone else wearing the same costume.

The first week of school, the door on my locker kept getting stuck. One day I was running late and, finally, I just yanked it really hard...and the whole door came off! The janitor had to take it away, covered in pictures and all, to fix it, and everyone could see into my locker for three full days.

I was in the lunch line with my crush, holding my drink while I was talking. As I was explaining something to him, I forgot I was holding iced tea and started talking with my hands…and spilled my drink all over him and the floor. Oops. I got my period, which leaked through my pants during school. So I had to call my mom to bring me a new pair. I managed to keep calm and tell myself CELEB MOMENT

“I was dancing at a friend’s bat mitzvah when I slipped on something. Next thing I knew, I was on the ground in a half-split, dress soaked and everyone watching. Never underestimate the power of a puddle of soda. Mazel tov!” —Cree Cicchino, 13, plays Babe in the new series Game Shakers premiering Sept. 12 on Nickelodeon.

it wasn’t a big deal...until one boy in my class was like, “Weren’t you wearing something different earlier?” Thanks for noticing. My friends always tease my crush, encouraging him to ask me out. The other day, they persuaded him to get down on one knee and “propose” that we go out. They didn’t think he’d actually do it, but he did and I said “yes.” The weird part is that I still can’t tell whether or not he was joking. A kid spilled his lunch on me, so I went to the school nurse to borrow something to wear. All she had was a T-shirt that read, “Are you naked? If you’re not wearing sunscreen, you might as well be!” Total. Fashion. Disaster. We had to run laps during gym class. I knew I should’ve put my hair up in a bun, but I wanted to show off my new box braids so I left it down. Halfway through one lap, I realized a piece of braid had fallen out and onto the ground. I quickly grabbed it, but a few other kids had already seen. They asked me, “Is your hair all right?”

I was sitting in English class, writing an essay, and my crush kept snatching my pen to tease me. I laughed and flirted back, pretending to get mad. Well, after about the 10th time he did it, I threw my pen...and it hit him right in the eye! He never spoke to me again.

In the school musical, I had to wear a long skirt as part of my costume. During one number, the skirt somehow came unhooked and started to fall. I had to try buttoning it while dancing and smiling. Luckily, I managed to fix it in time.
