“DESIGNING THE WORLD’S FIRST HYDROGEN POWERED FORMULA STUDENT RACE CAR” sketch development With the change to a bigger car, came some challenges in terms of the technical lay-out of the car. As the hydrogen tank and the energy capacitors moved to the side pods of the car, it became much wider and higher. The design tries to emphasize the width, while reducing the visual height. This is achieved by splitting the side pods up into a fixed black base and a floating shell.



3D development To develop a better understanding of the proportions, a mock-up model of the design was made. This model was then used to discuss problems and potential design changes. Together with the engineers the design was translated onto the technical lay-out and adjustments on both sides were made, before the production of the steel spaceframe was started. The design was refined in 3D, since production required precise CAD data.




production The CAD data was used to mill the moulds for the fiberglass panels. The panels were then processed and fit onto the spaceframe. Easy and quick access to the mechanical parts were required via FIA rules. After fitting them, the panels went through several finishing processes before the final paintjob was carried out.

“A MORE SCULPTURAL DESIGN APPROACH TO THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN GREENHOUSE AND THE OVERALL CHARACTER OF THE CAR”

sketch development Different design directions were explored to define the character of the vehicle. New themes for the front, rear and side show a different BMW i form language. The proposals each show a more emotional and fluid approach to surfacing, by making more use of folds and cuts.


final design The final design clearly illustrates a visually lowered nose and more pronounced corner detailing on the front fenders. The overall orientation is much more dynamic and has a sharknose-like feeling, due to the negative lower area. The iconic BMW kidneys are modernized by integrating these into the folded surface treatment.


The final design was further refined by using the technical lay-out of the current i3 as a reference. The length, height, wheelbase and overhang are all identical. Most hardpoints were kept, with the exception of the windscreen’s lower fixation point and angle.



Important design elements are the new DLO and bodyside design. For the next generation of i models, it will be even more important to communicate quality through strong and confident gestures. The character is now defined by two intersecting lines, creating a more natural drop in the DLO.


Rolls Royce A vision on future Bespoke internship BMW Advanced Design Munich



scenario I was inspired by Rolls Royce‘s chauffeuring heritage. The car fulfills the role as the ultimate personal taxi, helping the passenger to gather himself and focus on the event at hand. Up until now, Bespoke has been Rolls Royce‘s answer to the passengers unique personal wishes. However, this approach has been the same for over 100 years. Stating that intimacy, comfort and familiarity are products of time and repition, there lies an opportunity to create an interior that takes these factors as a starting point.

research I performed a short study on sitting behaviour and positions, dividing different positions in categories based on their level of comfort and discretion (displayed in matrix). In the selection process for characteristic passenger personalities, I kept the scenario in mind. This meant that all positions never exceed a level of over-comfort or indiscretion. Instead, I wanted the personalities to express the applied discipline and class associated with a Rolls Royce passenger.

sketch development In this phase, I explored what a new interior lay out could look like and how responsive structures could be integrated in the seating design. Inspiration for the interior lay out came from the 5 ,earlier defined positions and for the responsive structure I took inspiration from lightweight , semi-transparent furniture design.



final design The goal was to create more space for the main passenger, while maintaining the walkthrough feeling that has been such a characteristic element within the Rolls Royce heritage. By sliding the two doors as far away from each other as possible, a diagonal lay-out divides the interior space.

responsive bench structure An important element of the concept is the responsive bench structure. As a new type of Bespoke, here the focus lies on the individualization over time. By using a combination of a polymer microstructure and a systemactically controlled yiest culture, the bench can grow leather in places where the passenger is most comfortable.


A 3D mock-up showing the passenger lay-out. The dimensions of the car are based on the Phantom. As the need for a driver is eliminated, the passenger area now stretches all the way from the front to the rear.

“THE NEXT STEP IN SIZING FOR RUNNERS � regular sizing as base product Before moving into a fully rapidprototyped future, an intermediate solution needs to prepare people. Regular sizing as we know it, still provides the only affordable and realistic base for new hybrid concepts.

in-store Nike ID foot scanning With Nike ID, Nike has shown that people are looking for more individuality and are willing to spend an extra premium for that. With personalization moving from color and trim towards the structure of the product, this transition need to be made as accessible as possible. Portable 3D scanners, using tablets as a base, could provide a new in-store experience.

why Flyknit? First of all, the Flyknit technology offers a great amount of design flexibility and integration of functionalities. In its fine structure lies the ability to make the smallest of adjustments. Secondly, its already high level of computer controlled production systems provides a solid base for further digital integration.

sketch development The design was developed through hand sketches and iterations in photoshop. They each show a strong emphasis on the strap system. The layering concept illustrates how the support can be personalized usign 3D scanning technology.

final design The final design integrates the different functionalities in a clean and modern silhouette. Existing technologies like the Nike Free midsole and the integrated mesh sock liner further contribute to a recognizable and distinct appearance.
