DESIGN PHILOSOPHY The work of our office looks to leverage the latent civic, ecological and cultural potentials embedded within a given context in order to design highly unique and culturally relevant public landscapes. Our projects reflect an understanding of the nuances and intricacies of complex urban landscapes in order to produce clear, compelling design proposals that fundamentally enhance and amplify a place (rather than impose a predisposed stylistic or formal preoccupation). We pay particular attention to the relationship between pedestrian networks and transit systems, public open space and civic venues, as well as the financial and ecological sustainability of a project. We believe that only by considering the full range of systems comprising a city’s urban ecology can a truly productive and fertile design emerge.
RELEVANT PROJECTS / PORTFOLIO MULTI-GENERATIONAL SPACE The Denver City Park City Loop project is specifically designed to give everyone using Denver’s historic City Park – from small children to older adults – an opportunity to remain active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The design is based upon a distributed, fully accessible 1/2-mile mobility loop defining a one-of-a-kind intergenerational recreational landscape within the 14-acre site. The vibrantly colored surface of the mobility loop is paralleled by a sky-blue steel tube that bends, folds, inflates and twists into a variety of activity clusters. These clusters draw activity from the mobility loop and City Park beyond by creating distinct micro-environments for play and social interaction. This thickened perimeter of movement, activity, planting and social interaction also serves to frame a large, 8-acre central lawn that allows for the kinetic activities of the Loop to extend to the interior of the site area. RECREATIONAL PLATFORM Although Navy Pier remains Chicago’s #1 tourist destination, much of the Pier’s original integrity and inherent vivacity is lost beneath layers of inconsistent visual and programmatic clutter imposed upon it over many years. The Pierscape at Navy Pier project aims to amplify the physical and experiential qualities this one-of-a-kind pier intrinsically embodies: a place on the water for public use and recreation. URBAN FRAMEWORK / STRATEGY The Helsinki South Harbor and LA River Greenway 2020 projects each define a strategic site approach that embeds the design within the broader urban context of the city. A robust and legible public realm is essential to maximizing the successful cultural and recreational activation of the Wynwood Gateway Park (in-turn amplifying the effects of the new park throughout Wynwood and Miami neighborhoods beyond).

Helsinki, Finland - Helsinki South Harbour Design Competition - 2011 Our proposal transforms South Harbour--currently a primarily loading facility for large cruise ships--through six primary operations that place a priority on the harbour’s civic space: 1) separate port service traffic from local traffic; 2) extend the city to the water; 3) create continuous, legible public waterfront access; 4) animate the waterfront through a collection of discrete landscape types; 5) provide generous, over-scaled bespoke urban furnishing; and 6) anchor the new waterfront with four cultural icons.

NON ‘A PRIORI’ DESIGN PHILOSOPHY We believe that a good project answers to logics and desires with a non 'a priori' approach. The shape of the project to develop, both in terms of the architecture and the landscape, derives from strategy. Faced with sea or wind conditions, a sailboat does not decide a specific straight or curved path, but instead defines strategies to arrive at the port. Our projects define strategies as the will to economise on resources and means, meeting timelines or the strength of reality in all its dimensions, which, for reasons of efficiency and resilience, we understand as a kind of adaptation to the environment. Public space projects are brought about from a cultural conception of the world. The way we look at city’s public space is cultural and this has been changing with our awareness that resources and space are finite, and the recognition of the Earth’s complex ecosystem, of which we are just a part. We understand the public space project as the totality of answers to a group of functional needs of different disciplines. Projects speak not about beauty, but about life, they no longer speak of aesthetics but ethics, no longer fashion but permanence and contact. Beauty has to do with the convenient and the appropriate transformations that occur in the realm of the interconnected world. Beauty then, is a result, sometimes surprising, often a fruit of true necessity and in any case not seen as ‘a priori’.

Wynwood Gateway Park Competition OFFICE STATEMENT
We began at a somewhat large small-sized table in 2006 looking for a way out of the boredom and seriousness that’s become the surroundings of everyday life, and the uptight stuffiness that architecture loves. Now that we’re kind of bigger, the office sits at a really small medium-sized table and looks to overthrow the identities and rules that alienate all of us from life and living. Our work is personal. We undertake every project with an intellectual discipline and an artistic liberation, and find humor and joy in skillfully executing lowbrow experimentation. We introduce the mess and meaning and curiosity and familiarity and humor and strangeness and oddity and normalcy and wildness and weirdness that lets us feel human and recapture the spirit of art. Working from architecture, academia and art and economics and politics we hope to overturn the table of rotten discourse that is popular architecture and make room for lightness and weirdness to openly exist and for architecture to become more than a cheap commodity serving only the elite. We like to think of our work as dumb, free and funny. Here you can find some things that we’ve done and do: some houses and housing, small things or big things, institutions and installations, shops and writing, and your project too.

Design Philosophy We believe ARCHITECTURE should always respond to its time and settings but must yearn for timelessness. Our design philosophy involves constant research, a back and forth method, where research and practical aspects are dealt hand in hand. Some of our research projects have been published in online journals getting accolades the world over. We always look at innovative methods to solve critical problems during the designing process. We have a core research team always ready to tackle interesting problems. Architecture plays a very important role in conserving the natural resources of the world and for that reason sustainability is one of the key aspects when we design buildings. We attempt to push the envelope of design every day, in order to find creative and sustainable solutions to the existing problems in the real estate domain. We believe in excellence throughout the design process and enable this through all aspects of the working of the studio. Our in-depth knowledge, vast experience and client-focused outlook contribute to innovative buildings that respond to the stakeholders› needs, and the context, culture and climate. Our clients know that they can count on us for providing the most user- friendly and cost-effective solutions at every step. We treat architecture as more than just a science of measurements and shapes; we believe it to be an art form. This belief pushes us to critically question the existing norms and constantly remain in search to find the most innovative solutions for our stakeholders.

We believe in architecture made for people. Every design we do has an important public commitment; we always think how to give a public space to the city. Looking for a creative production, we always challenge ourselves in order to not only test our limits, but also those of the project. We believe in public spaces as social condensers, meeting points where people can share free time, relaxation, culture and sports. Our main objective is to achieve the possibility of making people happy through architecture; to work on the architecture of happiness through, giving to the city a public space for freedom, a space to improve the life of people. Green spaces are necessary for the daily life of people, also for the cities as clean air injections. Spaces to stimulate people’s senses; to have a rest from work in an aromatic field, to have a picnic under the shade of trees or to go jogging along flower paths. Sustainability is a very important aspect of our work; we take it into account as the centre of the construction process in order to take care of the planet: from resource management during the building process to the recycling of materials and rain-water collection; from energy management to biodiversity contribution through green spaces that will bring fauna to the space.

BIOGRAPHY
As a young, energetic architecture studio we’re concerned with a broad range of different disciplinary and cultural contexts. All our work is public and we aim to make imaginative and considered contributions to the built environment through socially engaged design processes. Our backgrounds in architecture and interaction design have given us a strong interest in the role of art, architecture and design in the built environment. The relationship between local communities, development and creative practice is a particular focus of our work and we believe that handled correctly - it can lead to enriched, exciting and engaging environments. Our project portfolio spans architecture, landscape, art, publishing, research and engagement. Across all the disciplines that we work in, we are interested in fostering relationships between authorities, local communities, creative practice and the wider public. In developing our projects we seek to use a cleareyed appreciation of places as they really are to deliver proposals that are robust to delivery processes, innovative in their approach to community engagement and of outstanding design quality.

Philosophy
Our firm was formed under the premise that we can create a unique, cognitive, and collaborative design experience that our clients are proud of and enjoy. We include our clients early and often in the design process to establish a common language, common design goals, and to maintain a transparent dialogue. We want to bridge the growing design language gap between the public and architects to inspire more input, more collaboration, and happier stakeholders. Our projects do not need to be explained by a designer, but instead acclaimed and understood by our clients and users. We do not adopt a particular architectural style or form. We believe that function and form need to be in a symbiotic relationship; both able to dictate the other. Both also contribute to, what we call, a ‘high performing project’ that exceeds all programmatic and mechanical expectations. Our clients’ early understanding of the project and their goals are used as benchmarks throughout the process to maintain a successful project course. In addition to happy project stakeholders, we want all of our projects to have a lasting and positive influence on the community. We want to promote healthy lifestyles, positive experiences, and creative thinking.

TEAM PHILOSOPHY / APPROACH Our team’s design process is embedded in scenario planning: the consideration of social, technological and environmental trends, and what they might mean for the future (how we live, work, and play). This enables us to generate new programmatic narratives, and in turn orchestrate surprising and novel “operating systems” to guide the project’s design. In the case of Wynwood Gateway Park (WGP), it means speculating about how the current image and role of the urban park today might be redefined to increase its audience and intensity of use - specifically by shifting from the prototypical passive-pastoral model to one that is more active and capable of serving as a 24/7 neighborhood center. Both in our research and everyday lived experience, we have found that the traditional idea of a park is no longer sufficient to satisfy the multiple emerging forms of leisure and recreation today. Like the shift from network television to cable channels, this may be witnessed in an exponentially increasing popularity and number of “niche”- type open spaces, tailored to specific activities: from skate parks and art parks, to ones for graffiti, parkour and outdoor performance, events and markets. Importantly, WGP also represents for us a unique opportunity to design a visually compelling alternative to the park-as-planted-softscape, with its high life cycle/maintenance costs. This does not mean that the ambiance of the natural goes away, but might instead be re-presented in a new form. In addition, it opens the possibility of imagining the park as a multi-level versus ground-level-only enterprise, given that the latter is increasingly hard to justify in urban areas of higher land value. In being designed with an FAR higher than 1.0, the above-discussed uses could not only be further intensified, but the audience expanded to include seniors to skateboarders attracted to the ramps it would require and picnickers to the views it might afford.

ADAMS SQUARE MINI PARK, 2007 (completed) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
City of Glendale Glendale, CA 12,000 SF $750,000 Urban Design Consultant
A pocket park in a mixed-use, largely Armenian community northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The corner site lies across from a small commercial district, but backs on a residential neighborhood. Half the site is occupied by an historic, 1920’s era “streamline-moderne” style that serves as an information kiosk and “service station” supporting the community’s many special events.
REGISTRATION #_______________________________________________
CHESS PARK, 2006 (completed) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
City of Glendale Glendale, CA 4,500 SF $400,000 Urban Design Consultant
Chess Park is another in the City of Glendale, CA’s multi-purpose urban pocket park program. It accommodates the community’s sizable chess-playing constituency as well as local theatre and literary groups. The site, sandwiched between two retail stores on Brand Boulevard, formerly served as a pathway from a city parking garage to a theatre and retail corridor.

HYPO PARK, 2013 (currently in design) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
NA Ontario, CA 35,410 SF $1 million (estimated) Architect
Undertaken by the City of Ontario jointly with Kaiser Permanente, under a grant provided by the State as part of its “Heal-Zone” program, HYPO-PARK is a pilot project aimed at providing open space in land-constrained urban areas with a high incidence of childhood obesity. Conceived as an “outdoor building”, it packs the activities and square footage of a conventional park twice its size on its postage-stamp lot. Rather than being an “empty center” of a neighborhood, the compact and intensively programmed HYPO-PARK will be a focal point and catalyst for revitalization of both individual and community.

WEINGART MULTI-USE PATIO, 1998 (completed) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
Weingart Center Association Los Angele, CA 6,000 SF $100,000 Architect
Located in L.A.’s Skid Row, this space was designed as a multi-purpose outdoor recreational, dining and gathering venue for a homeless shelter’s 300 staff and 600 clients. Bounded on two sides by the shelter’s buildings, the project centers on a half-court basketball court lined on the other two sides by shade structures which close off hours to serve as storage units. Landscape elements are in planters which, like the dining furniture, may be moved into different locations and arrangements depending upon the event. Also includes an outdoor classroom and BBQ pit.
RONKONKOMA PARKS AND RIDES, 2014 (Schematic Design just completed) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
Rauch Foundation Suffolk County Ronkonkoma, NY Withheld Withheld Architect
Ronkonkoma Parks-and-Rides leverages the passage of commuters and summer vacationers through this transport node into a regional leisure destination. Targeted at the affluent family households living within an hour’s drive, it inserts a slice of Manhattan’s energy, density, and intensity into eastern Long Island, an inverse version of what Central Park is to Manhattan Island. Enclosed in the inflatable year-round facility are activities ranging from a hockey rink to amphitheatre, driving range, bike/go-cart track, mini-golf, zipline and trapeze.

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BIG BOX, 2013 (study completed) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
Target Corporation Phoenix, AZ Withheld Withheld Architect
This development study explores how Target’s well-developed brand may be strategically expanded into the design of the open space on the infill sites they are increasingly interested in developing, to meet the growing urban market. Drawn from the social "cosmology" that appears on Target’s own website, audiences are able to experience and try out the retailer’s merchandise in a venue of their own design, while also offering a trade-off to NIMBY-ist claims Target is bad for their communities.
PLAYA ROSA, 2010 (in fundraising) Client: Location: Size: Cost: Role:
County of Los Angeles Compton, CA 15-acres Withheld Architect
Located adjacent to a major light rail hub and at the epicenter of an area of historically high in crime and childhood obesity rates, Playa Rosa is designed around a health-and-wellness mission. It will provide a safe place for after-school and weekend sports, recreation and health-and-nutrition related activities in an urban beach setting, as most of the adjacent community members do not have access to the coastline itself. Community partners and sponsors included the Police Activities League and nearby Martin Luther King Medical Center.

Design Philosophy We are an award winning design studio that seeks to explore new territories between architecture, design and art. For us design is a process of invention and discovery that grows from the client, the brief and the social, economic and technological environment. We work without preconceptions to analyse each brief independently in order to ascertain its unique opportunities and challenges and create a design that is often surprising but always relevant. We believe design has the ability to enrich people’s lives. We are passionate about creating places, spaces and objects that enliven every day experiences. Our goal is always to design projects that are not just beautiful and intriguing forms but that also facilitate engaging, sensory and emotional experiences. This philosophy extends to everything that we produce, from small pieces of furniture to large public buildings. We are particularly experienced at producing public projects at an urban scale that engage with the public, transform the ordinary into the extraordinary and create moment of surprise and excitement. Our work is often designed to initiate an emotional response, to stop people in their tracks and to break the monotony of the everyday.

1 // Chimecco // Sculpture by the Sea, Denmark // 2011 // Chimecco is a large interactive instrument built around an existing bridge in Aarhus, Denmark as part of the worlds largest outdoor sculpture exhibition “Sculpture by the Sea”.
The installation hides silently beneath the bridge in the forest until activated by human movements or the wind causing it to sing, dance and play with the senses. The piece is constructed from 600 50mm diameter gold anodized aluminium pipes ranging in length from 120 mm up to 3,750mm. These pipes are attached to the underside of a bridge and with a series of interactive nodes on the top surface that allow for people to ‘play’ the instrument.

2 // Centipede Cinema //Guimarães 2012 ECC // 2012 // The Centipede Cinema was commissioned by the 2012 European Capital of Culture Guimarães as a ‘public intervention’ for the Portuguese city. The cinema invites film-viewers to enter its steel and cork structure via one of 16 nozzles so that their upper bodies are part of the cinematic experience whilst their legs are rooted in the outside world
The alien-like structure creates a stark contrast with the historical streets of Guimarães, a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. This contrast is echoed in the playful juxtaposition of reality and the world of fiction.

3 // Bloom // Topshop Flagship Christmas Window // 2013 // We were comissioned by Topshop to create a striking kinetic installation for their Oxford Circus flagship store to herald the start of the all-important Christmas shopping season. Bloom is a large scale, moving installation composed of 159 individual rodmounted petals which gently rise and fall in response to computer-sequenced pulses from fans positioned below.
The top of the petals are a minimalistic white, while the underside is decorated with a bold banded pink graphic. An instantaneous colour change effect is created through the rotation of the petal components in the wind created by the fans beneath. Intense pulses of movement and colour reverberate across the installation, stopping shoppers in their tracks as they walk past the window.

4 // House of Muses // Museum of London // 2014 // We were asked by the Museum of London to develop an outdoor pavilion to gather information from the public regarding its future. Our proposal, the House of Muses, takes the form of a spatial graph. It begins life as a neutral ‘core’ structure outside the Museum of London. Gradually as the public visit the building and consider the questions being asked of them opinions are formed and translated to colourful, organic growths on the building’s façade. The diversity of colours and shapes are representative of the diversity of opinion within the city.
This is achieved through a simple task that the public are asked to take part in. Visitors vote for their answer to the multiple choice question by inflating a balloon of the appropriate colour. They then write their own idea or comment onto the balloon and clip it onto the façade from inside the building. The façade of the building becomes a constantly regenerating forest of data with thousands of brightly coloured latex balloons each representing a single person’s opinion.
As with a forest, the death of one of the balloons (through intentional or accidental deflation or bursting) is key in allowing the form to regenerate by allowing other ideas to take its place within the façade. A remnant of the original idea still remains in its deflated form, allowing all of the ideas to be collected and analysed at the end of the experiment.

5 // Zombie Bench // London Pleasure Gardens // 2012 // Zombie Bench is our winning entry for RIBA’s Pews & Perches competition to design a unique bench for London Pleasure Gardens.
Zombie Bench is more than your everyday park bench, it is a landscape made of more than 70 unique prefabricated concrete arms that reach out of the ground as if emerging from some unseen tomb.

6 // CineMaze // Melbourne, Australia // 2015 // CineMaze is a unique performance venue designed to host a series of short films as part of Melbourne International FIlm Festival 2015. It allows local and international film-makers to explore the idea of non-linear narratives in which the viewer has the ability to define their own viewing experience. The architecture of the venue mimics the complex storylines of the films showing within it. Branching, divergent storylines lead to a complex maze like form, the route through which is guided by the film’s narrative.
Audience members are asked to navigate a fabric maze, as they do so their journey is interrupted by a series of scenes from a short film. Depending on the route you choose to take you will experience a completely different sequence of scenes and thus will emerge from the maze with a story line defined by your movement through the space.

This pavilion lies on Atlantic City Broadwalk in New Jersey to remember and preserve the memory of the Holocaust. Creating a visual connection while separating the interior space from the hustle and bustle broadwalk, the undulating concrete slab invites people into the medication space raised 10 feet above from the broadwalk level, providing a view towards the Atlantic ocean.

This proposal seeks to revitalize the neglected courtyards of the school building with minimum intervention to the current state. Our proposal is to instert two plates -a solid concrete slab and a water basin- each has 24m in length and 10m in width and creates a different space around itself.

NYC Bike Station Proposal The site is the under-utilized terminus of a broad walkway that separates West Street from Battery Park City. The vertical mechanical parking system encased in a glass box maximizes the parking capacity and also provides a view of bikes floating in the interior space. The glass box also functions as a thermal mass to minimize the consumption of the energy for AC.
