With an understanding of construction combined with my appreciation for the architectural design process, I have had great success working with architects and wish to further “bridge the gap between the two disciplines.

Professional Experience

Having an education in architecture and 7 years work experience in construction management, I have had unique opportunities to seek ways in which I can apply my design education throughout my construction management work experience.

Construction coordination Early in my involvement with the Oregon City Medical Office Building project, I took it upon myself to “construct” the foundations of the building using SketchUp. The foundations were a scope of work that Howard S. Wright was self-performing, so I thought it would be a good exercise to vet the constructability of the foundation structure using the information provided via the structural drawings. If I could “build” the foundations digitally, our crew should have no problem building this in the real world. In addition to confirming the constructability of the structure, this model ended up being a valuable tool for verifying dimensions and ultimately avoiding a number of RFIs during the construction of the foundations.

RFI Solutions Working or a general contractor has trained me to come to the table with multiple solutions to a design or construction issue. The following pages are some examples of issues that I have worked through over the past years.

BIM Coordination Building Information Modeling was utilized during the early stages of the Oregon City Medical Office Building project. It was my job to oversee the coordination between MEP contractors and ensure that the coordination was completed on time with the project schedule.

What is this for?

AWB continuity recommended here

Do not bisect AWB seals with sheet metal. AWB sealed to R.O. WP on one side and frame on other side TYPICAL

Exterior Skin Design Another example from the Oregon City Medical Office Building, these pages show the efforts that went into coordinating and vetting the design of the exterior skin system on the building. This was over the course of 4 weeks and resulted in an ASI issued by the architects to address the suggested solutions.

Yes

Sheet metal cannot bisect AWB seal

Recommend using head receptors for all heads. Alternatively, provide infill to support backer rod TYPICAL.

The following pages showcase some examples of the best sketches I have produced both while at UI and after having graduated.

Hand Sketches

Early in my architecture education at the University of Idaho, I realized the importance and rarity of the ability to render buildings by hand. As my education continued I made it a priority to hone this skill.

Architecture Education

Simplcity, functionality, and sustainability became my personal drivers behind the designs of projects completed throughout my architecture studio curriculum.

The inspiration for this row house came from the design ideas of architect Renzo Piano. One of the main ideas Piano accomplishes in his buildings is the successful filtration of natural daylight into the interior spaces using a complex and innovative system of light scoops or louvers. This is accomplished in the row house through the use of operable louvers located on the roof. These louvers are assembled in a grid structure that is carried out within the plan of the house, working to organize the interior spaces.

Third year design studio project. Rowhouse design, using inspiration from architect Renzo Piano.

This was a project completed during my third year at the University of Idaho. It was a competition for the redesign of Fire Station 5 in Boise, ID, using the modular CMU block as the basis for the design.

Construction Education

I was initially exposed to construction management in 2005, in the summer between my first and second years at U of I. I saw concepts and techniques that I had recently learned about at school being applied in Solution: Pipes could be lowered below the the real world.

mbers so that no clash exists.

This inspired me to pursue a continued education in construction management at the University of Washington. The following pages show some of the work completed during that time.
