FARDE ISLAND EDUCATION CENTRE 04
The Farde Island Education Center was a prime choice for precedent studies due to similar programmatic functions and the use of circulation. The school uses a multi-level pinwheel circulation system that makes the building efficient, even for a school. using a centralized vertical circulation point and branching off with different programmatic needs, the building becomes efficient but also creates a central gathering space where the users can interact. This became a dominant inspiration piece for the Hutchinson Island Environmental Research Center (HIERC). HIERC uses the same principle in terms of circulation. Allowing people to circulated at a main point of intersection allows the building to seamlessly relate to the specific site conditions. Creating two seperate corridor systems and overlapping them at the circulation point proved to be the best solution.
VILHELMSRO PRIMARAY SCHOOL
The Vilhelmsro Primary School was another excellent choice for a precedents study due to similar programmatic funstions and the use of vegetation throughout the project. The school intertwines the characteristics of interior and exterior spaces and blurs the line in between the two. The relationship it has with the site and the way it incorporates vegetation carried over to HIERC. Requiring a plant nursery and a subtropic garden, HIERC incorporates both throughout the interior and exterior of the project. This creates a cleaner environment for the users to interact. Using the existing site and allowing it to flow up onto the roof creating a green roof was another miportant design decision based on precendents. This creates a more efficient building that does less harm on the existing ecosystem of the site.

DESIGN IMPLICATIONS Taking the circulation patterns from this building and mimmicking in HIERC was a big design decision based on precedents. Having an efficient circulation pattern that allowed users to interact with each other was an important aspect that drove the design process. Being a research center, the idea was to allow people to learn from the site, learn from the building, and learn from each other. Having a interactive circulation pattern was key in achieving this goal. 06
Incorporating vegetation throughout the project was another design design based on precedents. Incoporating the subtropic garden and plant nursery throughout the building instead in one single location was another attempt to get the users to interact with each other. Alowing the existing site to act as a slope and the the main roofing element was to create a relationship between the site and building, and to also create a more efficient space. All of these decisions was based on human interaction.

After visitng the site for the first time and exploring the vegetation and surrounding relationships with the site, I concluded that the best location was to building on the existing intersection of the site and to preserve most of the exisitng ecosytem that was already established. By building on the existing intersection, The building demolishes virtually no trees and makes the existing pathways useable in the new design.

By placing the building on the existing site intersection, The plans allows the building to fully take advantage of the exisitng site and preserve the existing ecosystem. Virtually no trees will be harmed, and if a few are then they will be replanted in the courtyard.
By placing the building on the existing site intersection, it allows for the users to experience a panoramic view of the site from virtually every part of the building. Maximizing views will be a crucial part to this design.
By placing the building on the existing site intersection, it allows for the footprint to be completely out of the high risk flood area. This keeps the building from dangerous flood areas and keeps the users safe.
By placing the building on the existing site intersection, the building will be seen from virtually every part of the site. Incorporating a dock will allow people to see the project from River street.
By placing the building on the existing intersection, the building is immune to winds by the vegetation of the site. The higher parts of the building would incorporate a cross ventilatino system. This would keep the building at a relatively comfortable temperature at all times.
By placing the building on the existing site intersection, virtually no vegetation will be harmed. The intersection is pretty bare and hold hardly no vegetation. What little vegetation that is harmed will be replanted in the courtyard space.

After several parti studies, the one on the left was the final outcome. Only crossing the intersection at two points, the building wouldnt interrupt the existing circulation paths. By bridging the building over the paths, the users would have an option of entering the building or continuing on the existing paths. Orienting the building will be a challenge and will effect the user perception of the building. All of the parti studies were based off the relationship with the existing site intersection. Allowing the building to interact with the site intersection would create a relationship with the site and give the project a characteristic that makes it unique.

After choosing the parti, I began to break down the individual parts that made up the parti. I began to arrange them in terms of user calssification according to public, private, and semiprivate and semi-public. I seperated the administration offices, cafeteria and library, circulation, and education/ residential. By breaking up different spaces, this allows for there to be a more direct circulation path. Keeping people in there intended spaces, keeps the building from people who are misguided. Placing the library at the center of the building will create a space that allows people from different parts of the building to interact with each other. The same goes for the main vertical circulation points. Creating the exhibits at the front part of the building with bring people into the building and experience the spaces within. Placing the residence on the back-side of the building will create a sense of privacy.

After incorporating all of the above studies, The final product turned out to be a multilevel pinwheel design situated within two corridors that utilizes greenspace throughout the design. Derived from a rectangular prism that offsets each vertical floor height, creating panoramic views to every major view of the site. By seperating the different types of spaces, this creates a intimate group of spaces that are experienced entirely different. Bring in ventilation and light was another huge design principle applied in the project. By creating a west facing lourve system that overlooks a green atrium space, the building utilizes the color spectrum with the orange hues of an evening sun with the green hues of the plants. This gives the space a sense of comfort and relaxation. This is another reason ehy the residence hall is located in the same space.

In my designs, I look to articulate an individual space with a sense of personal aesthetic with retrospect to the design as a whole. In doing so I tend to design a piece for a part and a part for a whole. The final outcome intended would be a series of spaces that contain a sense individuality and also coexist with each other. All being underlined by the most important design driver of my work, the client.
