THE TOP FIVE GROSSING MOVIES OF ALL TIME

INTRODUCTION With the wildly popular release of the last Star Wars movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, last year, it got me thinking about other movies that had unbelievable box office grosses. Considering that the movie industry has only been around for nearly 150 years, it is not hard to guess that the most popular movies were created in the 20th century.

The advances in technology (i.e. CGI) have greatly helped the movie industry captivate audiences with realistic computer imaging and amazing soundtracks, not to mention scripts that pushed the boundaries of the imagination. The movies that had cutting-edge technology clearly are in the top ten grossing movies of all time — so far. Yet, the top five movies had earnings in the $2 billion range. Let’s take a look at them.

1. AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019) It’s no surprise that a superhero movie won the top spot. Other movies of this genre have done very well, such as Spider-Man: Far From Home and Iron Man. The movie grossed $2.796 billion.

2. Avatar (2009) This was the first movie to use immersive 3D technology. James Cameron, the director of the film, used a new 3D camera (a modified Fusion camera) that gave him an augmented-reality view as he shot the movie. Avatar came close to being in the number one spot with $2.79 billion.

3. Titanic (1997) Another James Cameron film that grossed billions. The movie was famous for its special effects and the Celine Dion song, “My Heart Will Go On.” It also catapulted Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet to instant stardom. Titanic, based on the reallife Titanic story, grossed $2.19 billion.

4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) The first in the sequel Star Wars trilogy, The Force Awakens introduced us to new stars, such as Daisy Ridley and John Boyega as well as brought back cherished actors, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. It is the second film to break the billion-dollar mark with $2.07 billion.

5. Avengers: Infinity Wars (2018) It seems only fitting to finish out the top five with the film that began the end of phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The first movie of the two-story line prepared fans for the climactic end that was Endgame. Infinity Wars was the first movie to break into the billion-dollar club with $2.05 billion.
