How can cultivation in the city, growing vegetables and raising livestock be combined with a functional public space to respond to a growing global urban community?
question ?
Can raising birds, keeping bees and caring for apple trees grow community?
question ?
Birds. Bees. Apple Trees. believes that by combining just three ingredients we can start to achieve not only the growing of food, but the cultivation and succession of community.
answer
Individually each ingredient presents both potential and work. Connected they present a system through which we can start to cultivate community and redefine public space.
answer
To create an environment that promotes harmonious and familiar community.
goal
To know each other To share what we know To have a place to share.

simple.tools
Framework is your geography. Your space. The site. The architecture. It is the environment and conditions within which you operate.
Simple tools are whatever you have at hand. They can be skills or equipment, or resources or knowledge. They can be activities and intangibles. You can even imagine them!

interesting
Gaps allow you to build in discovery. To intentionally leave holes in what you design can unleash the creativity of your users.
Interesting is what happens. It is the potential to create something beyond original ideas and goals. Interesting results from feedback, manipulation, creation and collaboration.
You don’t have to solve all the problems from the start, so engage community, encourage feedback and start to evolve your designs.

Succession Kvarteret Spindeln was built in 1947. Currently there is one original tenant remaining. Over the past 3 years, all 9 houses have undergone total renovation. Cultural heritage status ensured the facades were not changed, however all interiors and fittings...and now a lot of the tenants have.
The renovation meant higher rent and added stress. Some elderly
tenants decided not to return. Whether this is causal or just correlated to the renovation, there has been an increase in children, students and dogs in the
history
neighbourhood. It seems Gubb채ngen is undergoing succession once again.
where does our system start ?
In Autumn 2012, we discovered our two apple trees were sick. About this time a neighbour and I formed a garden group.
answer
The system starts in the strangest place...at a tiny scale.

Argyresthia conjugella apple fruit moth - rÜnnbärsmal
Apple fruit moth ( Argyresthia conjugella ) is a spinning moth and known to damage apple trees and fruits. Eggs lay dormant in the soil throughout the Autumn and Winter, hatching in early summer. By lightly working the oil under the apple trees in Autumn, you can hopefully reduce the severity of the following years generation. Or...you could have chickens under the apple orchard, expressing their chickenness and eating all of the pupae, eggs and moths they can find.

PEST CONTROL
Are we allowed to keep chickens? How do you keep chickens when you do not have a backyard of your own?
question ?
You can keep chickens on rented land. You need the landlord and other residents permission.
answer
Winter came, the interested few joined the local HyresgästfÜrening to leverage the landlord and apply for funding.
If we can keep chickens, why not try bees as well? We can then look after both ends of the apple tree.
“THE KEY TO EVERYTHING IS PATIENCE. YOU GET THE CHICKEN BY HATCHING THE EGG, NOT BY SMASHING IT.” UNKNOWN
Everything takes time. Nothing gets done without fika.
lesson 1.
Six months after first garden group meeting. We host an information and voting night.

apple trees provide focus + starting point
The apple trees will be the nuclei of the edible garden. By building a guild underneath them, people can learn of the importance of companion plants and start to understand the larger systems at work in the garden.

hedemora chickens hedemora - hedemorahĂśns
Hedemora chickens are a Swedish land race from Dalarna. They are a medium sized bird and very hardy. It has been said that they are among the most cold tolerant chickens because of their dense and downy plumage, which results in a very dense, thick undercoat. The chicken was very close to disappearing in the 1970s, when most of Sweden’s old native chickens were crossed with imported species. We have suggested this breed as a possible choice for our garden as they are small, Swedish and sÜt.

activity 3 - hive build - summer 2013
top-bar hives
The hives will be placed on kommun land, at the southern most area of the block. We have applied for permission for this.
This is to ensure that the bees receive morning sun and are far away enough from walkways as to not bother any body who feels like getting bothererd.
The plan for this year is to build the apple guild, build the chicken house, build the bee house and start to activate the micro-climates with perennial herbs. We also hope to make better plans for the annual vegetables for next summer.
1 year plan
In 5 years time we hope - to have a healthy forest garden - have inspired other areas to grow community from birds. bees. apple trees - built living capital - grown community through tangible and intangibles
5 year plan - to inspire
answer
What are intangibles? Intangibles are generally defined as assets that cannot be seen, touched or physically measured, and are created through time. Community, and in turn, its design – is an intangible.
