Porsche Introduces the Latest Generation Boxster

CARS PLUS Magazine is published six times per year by RPM Media Inc.

Porsche has proudly introduced its latest generation of Boxster mid-engine roadsters that feature more power, greater fuel efficiency, and further improved handling. The new models will be named 718 Boxster and 718 Boxster S, a name that pays homage to the flat-four cylinder engines that were used in the Porsche 718 sports car that won numerous races back in the 1950s and 1960s. The centrepiece of this new model range is a newly developed turbocharged flat four-cylinder engine. The 718 Boxster boasts 300 horsepower from a 2.0-litre flat-four, while the S model features 350 horsepower from a 2.5-litre engine with variable turbine geometry. The new engines develop 35 more horsepower compared to those of the previous generation and are up to 14-percent more efficient. The retuned suspension of the 718 Boxster enhances cornering performance and is ten percent more direct than the outgoing suspension. The new models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission and the optional Porsche PDK now features fuel-saving virtual gears. While still remaining obviously recognizable, the 718 Boxster and Boxster S feature a wider, more aggressive front end that results in a more muscular appearance, and the redesigned rear fascia also places a greater emphasis on width thanks to the strip with integrated Porsche badge located between the tail lights.

produces 503 horsepower and puts power to the ground via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox (DSG) and 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. The 1,420 kg car reaches 100 km/h in an astounding 3.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 309 km/h. The GTI roadster features two race shell seats with a very low seating position. The seats and four-spoke grip steering wheel are covered with Alcantara and the wheel is fitted with shift paddles typical of a race car. The overall look of the concept is one of a GTI that is a few decades ahead of its time. Obviously at this point, this is merely a concept, but take just one look and you’ll join us in wishing VW would someday produce the GTI Roadster Concept.

Rolls-Royce to Mark End of Phantom Production with Zenith Models Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced that the current Phantom will enter the last stages of its production in 2016. This announcement follows on the heels of the news that Rolls-Royce has begun testing its all-aluminum architecture which will underpin every future Rolls vehicle arriving in market from 2018. The Phantom Coupe and Drophead Coupe models will also not be renewed, but to mark the end of the two magnificent Phantom models, Rolls has decided to offer a special collection of only 50 highly desirable cars to be called the Phantom Zenith. The current seventh generation

of the Phantom started production over 13 years ago and became the foundation for the renaissance of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. The special Zenith models will have surprise features such as a tailgate hosting area, laser etched armrests depicting the original launch locations of 100EX in Villa D’Este and 101EX in Geneva, bespoke instrument dials and a special treatment of the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy figurine.

AJAC Names Mazda CX-3 the 2016 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Recently, at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) announced the 2016 Mazda CX-3 as the winner of the 2016 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year as voted upon by over 70 of Canada’s top automotive journalists. The CX-3 was entered in the running after being named the Best New SUV/CUV (under $35K) at AJAC’s annual TestFest in October, beating out the likes of the Fiat 500X, Honda HR-V, Mitsubishi Outlander and Jeep Renegade in order to do so. The CX-3 was given high scores in a broad spectrum of categories including exterior and interior design and quality, vehicle dynamics and fuel economy. The Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year is one of the most coveted awards in the Canadian automotive world and to be named as such, the CX-3 beat out other finalists Kia Sorento, Volvo XC90 and the Chevrolet Silverado. Mazda Director of Marketing Vincent Reboul was quoted as saying “We’re especially excited about this award for the new CX-3, not only because Canada’s automotive experts selected it above our worthy competitors, but also because the affordable crossover segment is where Canadian consumers are spending their time shopping today.”

the exclusive Uconnect Theatre rear-seat entertainment system with two high-definition ten-inch touchscreens, and segment-first hands-free sliding doors and liftgate which are operated by making a kicking motion underneath the vehicle. Additonally, the Pacifica features a redesigned Stow ‘n Go seating and storage system and brings 100-plus available safety and security features as well as an exclusive nine-speed transmission. The Pacifica Hybrid is the industry’s first electrified minivan that will deliver an estimated range of 48 kilometres on zero-emissions electric power, from a 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. The estimated in-city fuel efficiency rating is 2.9L/100km. When the battery power is drained, the van becomes a part-time electric vehicle like a traditional hybrid with the power being supplied from a 3.6-litre V6 engine. The Pacifica Hybrid patented Electrically Variable Transmisson (EVT) has two electric motors that are both capable of driving the vehicle’s wheels. The battery is neatly packaged under the second-row floor in the Stow’n Go bins and can be recharged in as little as two hours.

Hagerty’s Driving Experience Enters Fifth Season

Hagerty is proudly entering its fifth season of the Hagerty Driving Experience, which is a program that has put more than 600 students in the driver’s seat to teach them how to drive vehicles with a manual transmission. The program allows young drivers, ages 15-25, to learn the craft while sitting behind the wheel of some very exciting classic cars. Participants are able to learn the ins and outs of starting, operating and driving a wide variety of cars from instructors and classic car owners themselves. In addition to the actual hands-on driving, students also take part in a classroom discussion that outlines how a clutch and manual transmission operate, as well as another seminar to learn the basics of vehicle maintenance. The morning and afternoon half-day sessions run about three hours and are limited to around 20 students. This year’s locations include Golden, Colorado; Wetaskiwin, Alberta; Caledonia, Ontario; Chicago, Illinois; and Tacoma, Washington.

Scion Brand to Transition to Toyota Scion originally established itself as a separate brand in the US in 2003 and here in Canada in 2010, as a way for Toyota to explore new products and to attract a younger customer base. Recently, the Japanese automaker announced that it will be transitioning the entire Scion brand to Toyota. Toyota believes that this is the next step to advancing the brand in Canada, as Scion achieved its goals of developing unique products and bringing in younger customers. Scion had one of the youngest average customer ages in the industry, at 39 years. The decision to transition the brand is apparently in response to changing customer needs, as Toyota hopes that with the addition of the Scion vehicles to the lineup, it will meet the versatility needs of even more Canadian customers. As part of the transition, model year 2017 Scion vehicles will be introduced as Toyotas beginning in August of this year. The FR-S sports car and iM 5-door hatchback will become a part of the Toyota lineup, while the tC sports coupe will have a final release series edition and end production at that August 2016 date. Additionally, the C-HR, which was debuted at the recent L.A. Auto Show, will also join the Toyota ranks. APRIL/MAY 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 11

I

f I told you just a few short years ago, that a subcompact CUV would take home top prize as AJAC’s Utility Vehicle of the Year, I’m not sure you would’ve believed me. Well, that’s just what happened this year, as the all-new 2016 Mazda CX-3 subcompact CUV took home top honours after entering the running by being named the Best New SUV/CUV under $35K at AJAC’s annual TestFest in October. Headlining what has proven to be a growing segment over the past few years, the CX-3 hopes to continue its early success and become a star in an already impressive Mazda lineup. Take one quick look at the CX-3 and you’ll immediately recognize it as a Mazda, as it looks somewhat like a shrunken down version of the larger CX-5, but is also influenced by Mazda3 sedan and hatchback styling cues. Overall, the appearance is a sporty one with sharp body lines, the always familiar signature Mazda grill, and a great set of 18-inch gunmetal alloy wheels. Inside, the CX-3 is even more like the Mazda3, as it features the same tablet-like seven-inch screen mounted prominently in the centre of the console, displaying the Mazda Connect infotainment system, and controlled by the HMI Commander Switch - which is really just a fancy way to say ‘rotating knob.’ This knob, located just behind the shifter, eliminates the need for too many buttons, providing a clean and more sophisticated look. Front seat room is plentiful, but the rear seats and cargo area are as one might expect, somewhat lacking in the size department due to the overall compact nature of the vehicle.

SKYACTIV-G 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 146 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, that is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission with sport mode. This engine/transmission combination is perfectly suited to the vehicle, as they provide you with enough power to safely make highway passes and even have a bit of fun, but will do this without sacrificing any fuel economy, which is a huge selling point for a vehicle of this ilk. Mazda advertises impressive numbers of 8.8L/100 km in the city and 7.3L/100 km on the highway, and I have to admit what I experienced during testing was close, if not spot on. Getting behind the wheel of our top-of-the-line GT model, I was pleasantly surprised with the overall feel, as some of the CX-3’s main competitors have put a bit too much emphasis on efficiency - and clearly forgotten about the fun factor. This fact was obviously not lost on the Mazda design team when developing this vehicle, as they have managed to achieve a near perfect balance of both. It also sits very low to the ground, which gives you a low centre of gravity that lets you take corners with ease, or dart in and out of traffic providing an overall nimble feel that is more reminiscent of a sporty compact car than a CUV.

The CX-3 is definitely on a high right now having taken home a well-warranted and very prestigious award. Since SUV/CUVs are a large focus of many automakers at this point, it’s very likely the subcompact CUV segment will become even more competitive in the near future. However, in order to de-throne the Mazda CX-3 as the consensus in-class favourite, any new competition will have to The standard and only engine currently offered in the CX-3 is the be pretty damn special.

FIRST DRIVE: 2016 TOYOTA PRIUS

Ground-Up Redesign

Story and photos by Benjamin Yong t would not be a stretch to say that finding someone who has never Ihave heard of the Toyota Prius would be difficult. Most people in town probably sat in one at one time or another, considering many local taxi companies favour the fuel-efficient vehicles for their fleets. This spring, the automaker launches the fourth iteration, 16 years after debuting in Canada.

Inside, the familiar geometric-patterned shift lever has been moved up onto the dashboard, surrounded by lots of futuristic-looking trim pieces finished in white. A 6.1-inch Display Audio screen hooked up to a backup camera is standard, bumped up to a 7-inch monitor and navigation package on the Touring grade and above. All grades except Base also receive the SofTex material seen in former Prii covering the seats and steering wheel.

The Japanese manufacturer chose the Vancouver area in early February to hold a media drive to show off all the changes of the ground-up redesign. Stephen Beatty, Toyota Canada Vice President, talked about how far the immensely popular hybrid has come. “One of my first tasks when I joined Toyota about 18 years ago was to introduce the media and others to the very first generation Prius,” says Beatty, adding it originally represented the company’s vision of what mobility in the future might look like. “Our first Prius was considered a niche vehicle — it was truly a green car. The 2016 Toyota Prius is going to be considered a mainstream car, one that’s going to go head-to-head against any vehicle in its market segment. It’s a car that’s not only stylish and fun, but it’s fitted with a lot of advanced technologies including some that only a hybrid makes possible.” The most obvious difference of this car from the generations previous is the look, now significantly more aggressive. The 2016 model, which will be sold globally, is the first to be built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), a platform underpinning several Toyotas and Lexus’ to come. The signature “Triangle Silhouette” wedge-like profile is still present, but the entire vehicle is longer and sits 20 millimetres lower. The peak of the roof has been moved forward by 170 mm for a leaner appearance and improved aerodynamics, and working together with air stabilizing fins installed on the underside, front quarter window and As is the case in the outgoing example, a 1.8-litre four-cylinder gasotaillights, help to achieve a slippery drag coefficient of 0.24. line engine is mated to two electric motors and managed by a CVT The bi-LED headlamps split off from the integrated turn signals, transmission, together producing 121 net horsepower and a manumatching triangular LED running fog lights underneath. A couple of other innovations, utilizing ultrasonic sensors mounted around the body, are Intelligent Clearance Sonar that gauges possible collisions with obstacles or oncoming objects when turning right or left, and Simple Intelligent Park Assist that guides the driver into a parking space while backing-in. As mentioned, Base ($25,995, $300 less than last year’s) and Touring ($29,330) models will be available, as well as Technology ($28,730) or Technology plus the Advanced Package ($31,990) that bundles extras such as a spare tire delete to increase storage capacity (includes a tire repair kit), additional safety features (blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert), rain-sensing wipers and more. “The 2016 Toyota Prius is ready to win over new fans, including many a little bit more fun. I still managed to net around 7.2 L/100 km with drivers who hadn’t previously considered a hybrid. At the same time, the throttle mashed on more than one occasion. As part of TNGA, the Prius rides on a newly-developed double wishbone rear suspension and revalved shock dampening. Combined with a lower centre of gravity and the reduced weight of the powertrain components, the handling feels much more planted than before. To demonstrate this, Toyota set up a simple slalom course in a parking lot and guests were encouraged to weave in-between cones as quickly as they’d like. My test runs became increasingly spirited each time, and the car darted in and out with little body roll and only the slightest squeals of protest from the tires. The 2016 Prius will be one of the first in the current fleet to offer the optional Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite combining four safety systems, built around a camera and millimetre-wave radar: pre-collision

But for most of the manufacturers involved, their version represents the heart of their line-up, the standard bearer for the brand, with all the latest technology and design.

This is certainly the case for Lexus, and has been since 1993 when the GS model was launched. Now in its fourth generation, the GS has just had a mid-life refresh. Visually, the changes are typical, with new styling front and rear, and different wheel designs. Much has been written about the nowsignature Lexus spindle front grille, so we won’t go far down that road again, and the latest GS has an even “bolder” version of it than before. Also up front are newly standard LED headlamps. The rest of the car is fairly conservative Japanese design, attractive and with no extravagant creases on the side of the body.

The dashboard, less “edgy-looking” than some other Lexus designs, is dominated by the LCD screens both behind the steering wheel, and high up on top of it, the latter being a full 12.3-inches wide. This allows a split screen with, say, both audio and navigation visible in a useful size. Controlling the various functions still falls to the computer mouse-like controller on the console, which is a bit too jerky as it moves around the screen, and hard to get right on the first try. Rear seat room is adequate, so long as the front seats aren’t all the way back. The overall impression is one of a well-executed, conservative-looking space that will appeal to the well-heeled owner.

With all-independent sport-tuned suspension including aluminum control arms, the car’s handling was highly competent for a big luxury sedan, despite the cold, wet weather we encountered, and the winter tires we were grateful to have. TEST FLEET New for 2016: The GTS joins the Cayenne lineup for 2016 and is seen as a bridge between the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo models.

PORSCHE CAYENNE GTS

Segment Competitors: Audi Q7, BMW X5 M, Mercedes GLE AMG The Skinny: The Cayenne GTS provides something that has been rarely, if ever, seen before - a full-size SUV that truly sounds and feels like a high-performance car. The highly powered engine and performance chassis and handling are simply intoxicating when behind the wheel. Pros: To go along with great performance, the appearance upgrades the GTS receives are stunning. Cons: Not the best when it comes to fuel economy, but lets be honest - who cares! The Verdict: If you want the fun of owning a Porsche but in a slightly more practical package, look no further.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF HIGHLINE

New for 2016: The entire Golf lineup remains largely unchanged for 2016 after entering its 7th generation (MK7) in 2015, save for an available new infotainment system featuring a larger 6.5-inch touchscreen. Segment Competitors: Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, Nissan Sentra, Honda Civic. The Skinny: The Golf Highline is the top-of-the-line version of the non-GTI Golfs available, and comes pretty much fully loaded with everything from 18-inch alloy wheels to a Fender Premium audio system. Although it’s not a GTI, it doesn’t completely forget about the fun factor, as its competent 1.8L turbocharged engine produces 170 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

Price: . ................................................................. $34,386 (as tested) Engine: ............................................................1.8L turbocharged I-4 Trans: ............................................................................ 6-speed auto Power: .................................................................................... 170 hp Torque: ................................................................................. 200 lb-ft Curb Weight: . ...................................................3,023 lbs./ 1,371 kg Fuel Consumption: ......................... 9.3/6.4 (L/100km – City/Hwy) New for 2016: The Mitsubishi Outlander received significant changes after being completely redesigned just 2 years ago and now features an updated look with a new grill. Also, more standard features are featured across the lineup.

Pros: The Highline is just solid all the way around with its combination of performance, efficiency, safety and technology. Cons: Definitely not quite as fun to drive as its GTI counterpart. The Verdict: If you are a fan of the popular Golf lineup, and don’t need the performance-oriented styling and drivetrain of the GTI, but do still want some luxury features, the Golf Highline should provide what you’re looking for.

MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER V6

Segment Competitors: Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Kia Sorento, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, Chevrolet Equinox, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Cherokee The Skinny: The Outlander is an incredibly versatile crossover as it offers front- and all-wheel drive configurations, an optional 3rd row, a four- or six-cylinder engine option, and an upcoming hybrid variant. This allows the Outlander to appeal to a wide variety of customers as it offers something for everyone. Pros: Has a very spacious cabin, whether it be for people or cargo. Cons: Connecting your phone seemed to be more challenging than it should have been. The Verdict: The Outlander does many things well, and while it doesn’t have one single thing that will blow you away, it does enough to warrant a strong consideration for anyone looking to get into the mid-size SUV/CUV class. 24 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

BMW 328i TOURING

New for 2016: The entire 3-Series received a few minor updates for 2016 including some slight styling changes to the exterior, like available LED headlights, and some new trim accents inside. Segment Competitors: Subaru Outback, Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Volvo V60, Audi Allroad, Volvo XC70 The Skinny: The BMW 328i Touring is an entry-level luxury sedan in the form of a wagon for that added versatility. It is wellequipped both inside and out, provides more cargo space than that of a typical sedan, and is still fairly fun to drive.

Price: . ..................................................................... $48,850 (MSRP) Engine: .......................................2.0L twin-turbo 16-valve 4-cylinder Trans: ............................................................................ 8-speed auto Power: .............................................................. 241 hp @ 5,000 rpm Torque: .................................................258 lb-ft @ 1,250-4,800 rpm Curb Weight: . ..................................................3,781 lbs./ 1,715 kg Fuel Consumption: ....................... 10.6/7.2 (L/100km – City/Hwy) New for 2016: 2016 sees a mid-cycle refresh for the Equinox, with a restyled front end and an upgraded interior plus new available connectivity features.

Pros: We absolutely love the overall styling of the vehicle both inside and out. Cons: While still fun, doesn’t have that wow factor when it comes to performance. The Verdict: The 328i Touring provides the overall look and versatility of a typical wagon but maintains the drivability and style of a BMW which is always a good thing.

CHEVROLET EQUINOX LTZ

Segment Competitors: Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Kia Sorento, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, Volkswagen Tiguan, Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Cherokee The Skinny: The Equinox finds itself right in the middle of one of the most competitive classes in the automotive industry today, the mid-size SUV segment. The Equinox offers everything you’d expect a vehicle in this class to have - a smooth ride, spacious cabin, efficiency, and the latest safety and technology features. Pros: Was impressed with the overall space and ride we experienced on a mini road trip. Cons: Could’ve used some of that extra power the V6 has for passing. The Verdict: The Equinox is a nice-looking, capable mid-size SUV that has more than enough room for 5 adults and all of their gear. Definitely should remain competitive in its class.

MERCEDES GLE 350d

New for 2016: The GLE Coupe is a brand new model for 2016, the range including a GLE 450 gas model, a Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S performance model, and a GLE 350d diesel as our tester was. Segment Competitors: BMW X6, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Infiniti QX70, Lexus GX The Skinny: The Mercedes GLE Coupe is brand new for 2016 and looks mostly like a larger luxury SUV with a little bit of hatchback mixed in with its sloping roofline and its overall interesting (in a good way) appearance. Our GLE 350d diesel-powered tester featured incredible torque and a very smooth ride. Pros: Has excellent ride quality and drivability as you’d expect from any Mercedes vehicle.

Price: . ..................................................................... $72,300 (MSRP) Engine: ............................3.0L twin-turbo 24-valve DOHC V6 diesel Trans: ............................................................................ 9-speed auto Power: .............................................................. 255 hp @ 3,400 rpm Torque: ........................................................... 457 lb-ft @ 1,600 rpm Curb Weight: . ...................................................4,795 lbs./ 2,175 kg Fuel Consumption: ....................... 10.1/8.0 (L/100km – City/Hwy)

Cons: Due to the sloping roofline, some headroom has definitely been compromised. The Verdict: If large luxury SUVs are what appeals to you, but you want something that will stand out from the crowd in terms of looks, the GLE Coupe is a viable option. APRIL/MAY 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 25

FIRST DRIVE: KIA SPORTAGE

Pioneering the Segment porates new combination headlights housing halogen projection or HID lamps, tri-LED daytime running lights and turn signals. Like I said, aking its first appearance way back in 1993 (1999 in Canada), the there’s a lot going on. Kia Sportage compact crossover utility vehicle debuted at a time when there wasn’t anything else like it on the market. Released a year If you drive behind a Sportage at night, you might think you were folahead of the just-facelifted Toyota RAV4, five years before the Honda CR- lowing a giant BMW i3. The LED Light Bar taillights illuminate in a sort V and eight years before the Ford Escape, all, and now many more, are of an upside-down eyebrow shape reminiscent of the German electric competing fiercely for a slice of the immensely popular small SUV pie. Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

“We really believe the Sportage was a pioneer of the CUV segment,” says Ted Lancaster, vice president and chief operating officer of Kia Canada, speaking at the media launch for the 2017 Sportage in the Okanagan Valley city of Vernon, B.C. The current fourth-generation model, which Lancaster calls “pretty aggressive looking,” is targeted towards the coveted Millennial demographic, seeking attributes like value — the Sportage starts at $24,795, priced in-between a Nissan Rogue and the aforementioned RAV4 — reliability, all-wheel drive safety and of course, tech. Lots and lots of tech. Much of the so-called aggressiveness comes from the face of the vehicle, radically different from the former version and oozing with influence from Kia’s chief designer Peter Schreyer. The signature Tiger Nose grille finally makes it onto the CUV, and here’s a fun fact you might not otherwise learn: there are two subtly different grilles, one containing smaller openings in the mesh installed on base trims and another using bigger spaces car, except with three bars of LEDs stacked atop one another versus in-between to facilitate better airflow on turbo variants. the i3’s two. Perhaps the biggest point of conversation on aesthetics comes from the introduction of the optional “Ice Cube” LED fog lights. The slightly bigger footprint provides a bit more head and legroom all-around. During our test drive, I was perfectly comfortable sitting in the driver’s seat and operating all the controls, but my heftier co-pilot commented the shifter was poking his right leg. The storage area behind the rear seats boasts a neat “Dual Floor” function allowing the cargo floor to be lowered for more space. In the regular position, 798 litres of space is yielded, or 868 litres when lowered, an increase of 128 litres over the outgoing model with a fixed floor. Earlier I talked about copious amounts of technology in the Sportage, and here is some of what I mean. On the mid-level EX and grade-topping SX trims, Android Auto smartphone connectivity lets users plug in their devices to access music apps, text-to-speech and vice versa messaging, Google Maps, etc. There’s also wireless charging for phones that support it, and a Harman/Kardon premium stereo on EX Tech and above. For the ultimate hands-free experience, the Smart Power Liftgate opens once the system senses the presence of the key fob for more than three seconds, thus avoiding the random act of kicking underneath the rear bumper, as some competitors require. The base engine is a 2.4-litre four cylinder, producing 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, available on all LXs and EXs. The SX receives the same turbocharged 2.0-litre four found in the Sorento and Optima, making 237 hp and 260 lb-ft. We had a chance to drive both in almost every type of environment likely encountered by buyers, and there were no major complaints. A few thoughts: the 2.4 tends to get loud as the rpms climb in a passing or uphill situation; the turbo has loads of power, even climbing steep inclines, after a brief moment of turbo lag as the boost builds.

Regardless of drivetrain, the vehicles gobbled up twisty corners demonstrating car-like precision, and on a small off-road course, locking the AWD to 50:50, we ploughed easily through giant puddles and muddy ruts. Estimated fuel economy on front-wheel models is 10.4 L/100 km in the city, 8.0 L highway, and 11.3 L/100 km city and 9.5 L highway for all-wheel. A full range of safety and driver assistance features are offered, including forward collision warning, emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and front and rear park assist.

A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and all Sportages have a choice of front-wheel or Dynamax Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, except The 2017 Kia Sportage starts at $24,795 for the LX FWD, and tops out the AWD-only-equipped SX. Again, we had no problems with either. at the 39,395 SX grade.

FIRST DRIVE: CADILLAC XT5

Dare Greatly

Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

Luxury is definitely a focal point for the exterior and interior, designed around giving a feeling of open space. Dash and trim panels feature cut-and-sewn leather coverings in a wide variety of colour choices, with tasty names such as Maple Sugar. Taking a page out of the Escalade’s book, a Platinum edition is available offering unique materials and exclusive equipment.

Arriving in stores next month, the XT5 crossover replaces the SRX, the first in a series of utility vehicles eventually donning the XT badge. Cadillac presented media their first test drive opportunity at an event in early March held near the sunny shores of California.

One of those pieces is the Cadillac Rear Camera Mirror, winning the Automobile Journalists Association (AJAC) 2016 Best New Safety Technology award. The mount hides a display behind glass, projecting a live image of what’s aft of the vehicle minus the usual head restraint and rear passenger obstructions, captured via a high-dynamic range camera mounted on the liftgate.

n a series of new, inspiring commercials showing extraordinary people doing extraordinary things, one of which aired during the Oscars, Cadillac uses the phrase “Dare Greatly.” In the context of the luxury car company, it means trying something outside of the luxury market norm. Like inventing the XT5.

Vehicle performance manager Larry Milhalko says he and a team of engineers sat down to nail down what the goal was for this model, Thanks to the wide-angle lens, drivers get a view reportedly 300 per exactly how it was going to take on the competition and what could be cent better than normal. The perspective does take a little getting used to, because similar to side mirrors, objects are further than they appear. done better than the outgoing example. Fortunately, flipping a connected switch converts the unit to a conven“Our session resulted in what I kind of call our ‘more’ list. Basically like tional mirror. kids in a candy store, we decided we wanted to improve on every aspect of the car — we wanted better crashworthiness, we wanted more spaciousness, we wanted more agile and athletic ride and handling. We also wanted, of course, better fuel efficiency as well as better noise and vibration performance,” says Milhalko. Comparing the XT5 and SRX side-by-side, it’s quite evident the body panels on the former are much curvier and resistant to drag. Although the profile seems lengthier than the SRX due to a 51-millimetre-longer wheelbase, the overall dimensions are actually smaller contributing to a sportier form. The boxy headlights have been nixed in favour of sharper units containing an integrated vertical LED daytime running light strip swooping down into the front bumper area, meeting the foglights underneath. The grille is larger and houses a compact, modern rendition of the Cadillac emblem. APRIL/MAY 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 31

Other tech highlights include a faster processor for the CUE infotainment system, something I noticed doing as simple a task as lowering or raising the volume, once a tedious and laggy process. To do so, users slide their finger along the arrows as though scrolling on a smartphone. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces are supported and worked flawlessly in my tests. Like other GM products, 4G LTE connectivity, and OnStar services, can be had for a monthly fee. As Milhalko alluded to, the XT5 is stiffer and a significant 132 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, the benefits mostly coming from applying laser welding techniques and ultra high-strength steel construction. As a point of reference, the competing Mercedes-Benz GLE350 is nearly 300 kilograms heavier. All trims run a 3.6-litre V6 engine, also powering the brand’s ATS and CTS sports sedans, producing 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque wrangled through an eight-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox is equipped with Electronic Precision Shift, representing the first application of an electronically controlled shifter for Cadillac, reducing noise and vibration and allowing the implementation of a handy storage compartment below the lever.

Power delivery is sufficient, if not revolutionary, but paddle shifters discretely placed behind the steering wheel increases the fun level a bit. A Sport mode setting helps too, implementing quicker shift patterns, tightening up steering feel and stiffening the real-time dampening system. Add to that a newly developed five-link rear suspension, and what you get is a crossover with exceptional handling characteristics, which manifested itself wonderfully on the winding canyon roads of San Diego County. Front-wheel drive is standard and a twin-clutch all-wheel drive system is optional, capable of disconnecting the rear drive unit when extra traction isn’t needed in order to improve fuel efficiency and cut down on emissions. The fuel consumption numbers for a vehicle of its class are above average, rated at 11.1 L/100 km for combined city and highway operation, and personally observed at a virtually identical 11.2 L/100 km. The 2017 Cadillac XT5 will be sold in the following grades: standard FWD (starting MSRP $45,100), Luxury FWD ($49,250), Luxury AWD ($52,120), Premium Lux AWD ($59,830) and Platinum ($68,595). “It’s a great story. I think we really moved the car up to a new set of standards in this segment,” says Milhalko. 32 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

Porsche Camp4

Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

T

here’s pretty much nothing more exhilarating than driving a Porsche. Except driving a Porsche on snow and ice, that is.

That’s exactly the kind of experience Porsche Camp4 Canada offers. Operating out of the frozen Mécaglisse racetrack in Quebec, about 90 minutes outside of Montreal, Camp4 originally started as a press drive event held in Finland for the launch of the 911 Carrera 4. It was such a hit with participants that it grew into an annual two-day training course, open to the public, and is now also held in Switzerland, Italy and even China. Held in two different waves, Cars Plus was part of the first contingent of media guests invited to a condensed version of this winter’s program. Camp4 is every bit as much about providing a luxury getaway as it is driving instruction, and attendees stay at the nearby beautiful Estérel Suites & Spa. Meals at the resort, as well transportation to and from the track, are included in the cost of admission. The day got off to an early start, and before boarding a shuttle for an approximate 35-minute ride to Mécaglisse, a theory briefing was held at the hotel to cover driving technique. Head instructor Jonathan Urlin spoke at length about vehicle dynamics and car control. “Your instructors today will be talking a lot about weight transfer, and what they will have you do is induce these drifts, these oversteers, by using the brake pedal,” says Urlin. “Sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it? Here’s the explanation — anybody can go out there, hit the gas pedal, spin the rear tires, do the Tokyo Drift Stuff and it looks cool, it’s fun. But here at Camp4, what we do we focus on driver technique. In the rally world for example, what we do to get through a corner is by using weight transfer to the nose of the car to allow the car to rotate. And it’s what we call an oversteer.” Urlin also talked about the three different cars that would be taking part in the event, and how they all perform differently, particularly in frozen conditions: a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive Cayman GTS, a rear-engine, 34 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera GTS, and an all-wheel drive Carrera 4 GTS. All wore studded winter tires. Post-briefing, it was time to get into the cars. Drivers were paired off and put into different groups, and assigned to specific vehicles — with traction control off and Sport mode on — for the duration of the various activities. My team started off at a station focused on learning the Scandinavian flick, or utilizing the brakes and steering to purposely unbalance the Porsches to initiate a skid, and then riding the momentum through a turn and eventually recovering safely. The first part sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? While my brain understood the task at hand, I fought against my instincts to purposely try and lose traction, at precisely the right moment, and avoid careening into an instructor or cameraman in the process. A handful of trial runs in, our group was told to apply the same principle to a portion of the track that was laid out in a perfect circle. I tried to remember Urlin’s earlier training: “We use a technique called CPR: correct, pause, recover. What that means is we countersteer, or turn into the skid, pause, allow the weight of the car to settle and then recover by unwinding and looking where we want to go. To take it one step farther, if we want to continue that drift all the way around the circle, then we can add just a little bit of throttle.” To throw some competition into the mix, a chase and follow scenario was implemented, with the second vehicle endeavouring to catch the first. This required a great deal of concentration and focus, because if drivers were too eager applying the throttle, steering or brakes in attempt to escape or catch up, a spin would invariably be the result. After a few laps, participants were sent to another smaller circle set up like an icy skid pad for further practice. The last drill before the break involved weaving in and out of a series of cones in a short slalom by first gaining speed down a small decline, then braking and turning the wheel slightly to get the back end to swing out. “More throttle!,” shouted instructor Pierre Des Marais from in front of a snow bank as I made a pass. “Brake sooner!” Following lunch, the course was reconfigured into one continuous leg, tying in the different sections used in order to incorporate all the skills we were taught throughout the morning. People who complete the standard Camp4 school, known as the Precision level, are eligible to register for the two other intermediate winter programs that Porsche offers, including the Performance (Camp4S) and Masters (Camp4RS). ow annoying is it to hop in your car and drive to work, only to be stuck in traffic due to construction, an accident, or the countless occurrences that can take place on the street at any given moment? That’s where Waze comes in, a real-time crowd-sourced navigation app for your smartphone quite unlike anything else available. “We’re powered by the world’s largest community of drivers,” says communications manager Meghan Kelleher. “We have more than 50 million monthly active users across the globe and that’s in more than 185 countries. We’re also in more than 42 different languages.” The app constantly collects information as it’s open and drivers are going about their business. It can determine a route is congested from a slowdown in vehicle speed, as well as through the reporting function initiated either by the driver via voice commands, or the passenger pressing a small orange button directly from the mobile device. Kelleher was in town giving demonstrations, and says popular reports generated by “Wazers,” the name affectionately given to users, include police, environmental hazards and miscellaneous traffic incidents. During a drive in downtown Vancouver, she reported roadwork that we spotted while leaving the city core. There are additional options to leave a comment and/or take a picture, all of which will instantly be seen by others online. 38 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

In addition to reporting, another way real-time information is gathered is via the map editor program. Volunteers start off as junior editors, assigned to a certain area of town, and their job is to make updates whenever a new building goes up, addresses change, etc. Editors who consistently demonstrate consistent, accurate work can get promoted with a larger territory. “We have levels created so that if Wazers can give a thumbs up to confirm the submission and you were a new map editor, you couldn’t just delete this bridge thank the person responsible, or indicate that the incident is no we’re on right now. The coupler features a 28-degree angle which is ideal for those applications where hood clearance is an issue. It is made with three layers of durable wrapped silicone with inner fabric support and includes appropriately sized hose clamps for installation. For more information please go to www.airaid.com

Auto Meter has recently expanded its DashControl lineup to include the Corvette C7. The DashControl is able to utilize factory displays to provide performance information without any modifications. It plugs into the OBDII port and enables you to monitor an extensive list of vehicle-specific performance parameters directly on the Driver Information Centre, plus the Nav screens and Heads-up Displays if applicable. Users are able to customize the display pages to display the data you want, and because there are no modifications necessary, the unit is 100-percent warranty friendly. PARTING SHOTS Goes to show that trucks are overrated.

How many horsepower do two camels have? Maybe if they stayed on the road and off the sidewalk this wouldn’t have happened.

There’s no way this is going to end well.

This is an expensive screw up.

That’s really quite impressive.

Parting Shots is where we share those photos that defy classification. If you’ve seen something four-wheeled (or otherwise) that you would like to share, please send it to partingshots@rpmcanada.ca 46 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016
