Porsche Unveils Completely Redesigned 2017 Panamera
P
orsche has finally unveiled the all-new 2017 Panamera sedan that it believes will combine the performance of a genuine sports car and the comfort of a luxury sedan. Entering its second generation, the Panamera has been redeveloped and re-engineered right down to the last detail. The outside features a 911 design language with long, dynamic proportions, and if we’re being completely honest, is a much needed improvement on the outgoing model. Inside has also been reinterpreted with black panel surfaces and interactive displays to provide an interface similar to that of a smartphone. Also, some of the classic buttons and conventional instruments have been replaced by touch-sensitive panels. Two new twin-turbo engines with direct fuel injection will be offered in the Panamera, with the Panamera Turbo model getting a new 4.0-litre 550-horsepower twin-turbo V8, and the Panamera 4S getting a 2.9-litre 440-horsepower twin-turbo V6. Both models will come with a permanent all-wheel drive system and a new 8-speed Porsche dualclutch transmission (PDK). In addition to new engines, the Panamera gets a new electromechanical power steering system that can be optionally supplemented with innovative systems such as an adaptive air suspension with new three-chamber technology.

Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Kia Canada, Ted Lancaster, was quoted as saying “Our long-term global strategy to concentrate on quality, brand building and ownership experience continues to pay dividends. Ferrari Reveals LaFerrari Convertible That Will Debut Later this Year Ferrari recently put out an image on social media of an open-top LaFerrari supercar that will be unveiled later this year at the Paris International Motor Show. An Autoblog report states that the open top model will cost around $1.4 million USD which is about 40-percent more than the standard version. The same report suggested that earlier this year, Ferrari showed the car to potential customers at a private event and the response was so strong it sold out almost immediately. After it was originally thought they would simply call the model the LaFerrari Spider, sources have apparently told Autocar that the model will have Aperta in its title which in English translates to open. About 150 to 200 cars will reportedly be built and will feature the same 949-horsepower 6.3-litre hybrid V12 from the hardtop version. In addition, significant and extensive modifications have been made to the chassis to maintain the same torsional rigidity and beam stiffness as the coupe version.
New Cadillac CT6 Offers Rear Seat Infotainment System That Provides New Levels of Connectivity The all-new flagship 2016 Cadillac CT6 features an incredible interior design and industryleading technology which includes the available rear seat infotainment system that will bring the back-seat experience to new levels of connectivity. At the forefront of the CT6’s rear seat infotainment system is the HDMI and USB ports located on the front of the rear centre seat or in the rear seat centre armrest. Using these ports in combination with the built-in 4G LTE Wi-Fi network, owners can use Google Chromecast and Apple TV or stream content directly from services like Netflix or YouTube. Additionally, the ports can be used to mirror device displays to play media stored on a drive. The system utilizes two independent, articulating 10-inch diagonal HD screens that integrate into the CT6’s cabin and retract into the front seat backs when not in use. The system is standard on the CT6 Platinum trim and is available on the Luxury or Premium models.

German sedans made by the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes. The new model, which follows on the success of the Explorer Sport model, will feature a 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6 engine under the hood that will make 325 horsepower and a super-impressive 380 lb-ft of torque, all put to the ground via a standard all-wheel drive system. The automaker has stated there has been an appetite from the public to produce a performance version of the Fusion ever since it entered its current generation back in 2012. The peak 380 lb-ft. of torque in the new Fusion model is more than what comes in established performance sedans such as the BMW 535i, Audi A6 and Mercedes E400. The Fusion Sport will start at a price of $33,475 in the U.S., so we aren’t exactly sure what that will mean for us north of the 49th, but it’s a safe bet it will still be an affordable number.
Chris Evans Announces Departure from Top Gear After Just One Season
Mercedes Possibly Separating Electric Vehicles into Their Own Brand
Just one day after the final episode of the 23rd season of Top Gear aired back in July, new front man Chris Evans decided to step down as host. In a tweet, Evans stated that he “Gave it my best shot but sometimes that’s not enough.” This comes with little surprise to those who continued to follow the show, as ever since the new hosts took over, there were rumours swirling around the internet about some of Evans’ antics and behaviour, with some reports even suggesting that he was behaving even worse than previous front man Jeremy Clarkson. Unfortunately for Evans, the cards were heavily stacked against him from the start, as it seemed the majority of Top Gear fans were displeased with the BBC’s decision to let Jeremy Clarkson go, therefore almost guaranteeing that there would be endless comparisons to the previous regime no matter what happened.

FIRST DRIVE: INFINITI Q50 RED SPORT 400
Running With the Big Dogs
Story and photos by Gerry Frechette, additional photos courtesy of Infiniti Canada
had come for a new force-fed engine specifically designed for luxury-performance applications, and the result is a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 that has found its first use in the Q50 sedan. It he mid-size luxury-performance sedan segment has certainly has transformed the car from an attractive and capable, but not seen some impressive new models the past couple of years, all that fast, sedan to one that can run with the big dogs. and it seems that a common weapon in this particular battle is a turbocharged (or supercharged in a couple of cases) six-cylinder To commemorate the new powertrain, Infiniti has given the engine. That is something that Infiniti had not had – until now. transformed Q50 a new name – Red Sport 400, that number designating how much horsepower the high-winding V6 puts The venerable VQ normally-aspirated V6 has powered many out. But the funny thing is, that name appears nowhere on the Infiniti models over the past couple of decades, but the time car. The trunk lid has the usual ‘Q50S’ badge, while the front fenders show off the new engine with ‘S 3.0t’ script, both S letters being in red. So, Infiniti has given this car a stealthy profile, and other than exhaust outlets and 19-inch wheels, there is little to visually distinguish it from previous Q50s.
T
Under the skin is a different matter, led by the engine. The exhaust manifolds including built-in turbos are integrated into the cylinder heads, and there is direct injection, too. It is some 40 pounds lighter than the VQ despite all the added hardware. The 350 lb-ft of torque is full-on as low as 1,600 rpm, lasting up to 5,200, and redline is 7,000 rpm. So, mid-range performance is outstanding, and if you take it into the higher revs, it is a very willing performer. Zero-to-100 km/h is done under five seconds, which is flying for a two-ton car, proving you really don’t need more than 400-or-so horsepower! Full-throttle blasts to 6,500 gave rise to a couple of observations, though. 12 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016
All RS400s in Canada are all-wheel drive, and while we recognize the need for traction in our climate, we would love to have had the chance to try the rear-wheel drive model that Americans get to buy, which has summer performance tires, and bigger ones in the back, versus the AWD’s all-season Dunlop SP Sports in 245/40-19 size. Still, one had to be impressed with the handling capabilities of this sedan, as much as we could tell on the very few winding roads we had the chance to attack. A lot of that prowess comes from the technology built into the RS400, some of it optional like Direct Adaptive Steering. This is ‘steer by wire’ with no mechanical connection between the wheel and the front end. When we first tried it last year, we weren’t impressed with the strange feel of it, but it has been much improved, and assistance, feedback and ratio are all variable. We turned off the ‘Active Trace Control’ that is supposed to help you carve smooth turns but puts weird sensations into your hands, put it on Sport setting, and enjoyed it that way. Firstly, and the only real shortcoming on the performance side, was that the 7-speed automatic transmission was hard-pressed to keep up with the engine, at least on our test unit. There was a noticeable delay in completing upshifts using the paddle shifters, and the shifts seemed more delayed the heavier the throttle and higher the revs. When we shifted from 2nd to 3rd on that full-throttle blast, the change was completed 500 rpm later. Downshifts were only slightly quicker. So that was a bit disconcerting in an age of automatics (and especially twin-clutch manumatics) that shift ‘right now.’ The other thing we noticed was just how quiet the RS400 was under full throttle. You hear a muted ‘whoosh’ but that is about it. No exhaust rumble or burble. We kind of like ‘flying under the radar’ from a sound perspective; others might want some more character from the exhaust system.

trim. Rear-seat and cargo room are not the biggest in the class. We like Infiniti’s approach with the Red Sport 400, as we have all along with the regular Q50. It looks bigger than it is, to our eye, and has road presence. So with only the bigger wheels and tires, exhaust outlets, and discreet badging to give away the game, you can call this a sleeper. It isn’t a hard-edged performance car like the BMW M3; it is more like the intermediate performance of the M-Series cars. Sporty, capable, fast in its own right, luxurious, technological – but a daily driver for the young executive who wants to keep a lower profile. And, it should be added, it’s a very good value for what you get. Once that transmission is re-tuned to become a worthy companion to the Red Sport’s great new engine, this will be the car that will re-ignite Infiniti’s performance profile amongst enthusiasts. There is way too much technology here to describe in the space we have, but for the driver, the major choices of how the car will drive down the road are accessed via the Drive Mode Selector, which runs from Snow (higher gears, less throttle), up through Eco (which ruins drivability to gain a a few drops of fuel), Normal and Sport (sharper everything), and then Sport+ which lessens the intervention of Stability Control for better hooning, and ending with Personal, which lets you customize the various performance parameters of the car, of which there are several. Or, you can go into each parameter individually, as we did with steering, and experiment. With more time and a test track, we would have done more of that. The interior is as little-changed as the exterior, with mostly just the seats upgraded. They are multi-adjustable, including bolster width, and feature a muchappreciated manual pull-out thigh support cushion. AJAC EcoRun 2016
Story by Gerry Frechette, photos courtesy of AJAC
T
he Automobile Journalists Association of Canada successfully completed its fifth annual EcoRun event in June, this year returning to its roots in Ontario after two successful runs in B.C. The EcoRun is an annual AJAC event that shows off a variety of eco-friendly vehicles, which include pure electrics, plug-in and conventional hybrids, hydrogen fuel cells, diesel-fuelled powertrains, and highly efficient gasoline options. The purpose of the EcoRun is to help inform consumers of these various options, as well as providing accurate road testing fuel economy numbers. These new vehicles were driven in real-world road conditions in order to fully test their fuel efficiency and for reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. As before, there was no limit to the size or type of the vehicle entered, as they ranged from sub-compacts to large sport utilities, and even a Porsche 911 sports car. The two-day event began this year in Toronto and continued down the St. Lawrence River to Brockville before concluding in Ottawa with a closing ceremony at City Hall. As always, EcoRun was not a competition, but rather a demonstration of the most eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles available today in Canada. With six different driving legs over the course of the two days, the 27 participating AJAC journalists swapped cars at each leg, selected at random, so that everyone was able to drive a variety of vehicle entrants over the course of the two-day event. This way, their fuel efficient driving techniques had to change according to the vehicle they were selected to drive, not allowing for the journalists to become ‘comfortable’ in one particular vehicle. The 27 journalists managed to navigate the route in a more fuelefficient manner than the official fuel consumption posted on the NRCan website for all 27 vehicles involved. The overall average efficiency driving score was 133.2 percent. The attached summary provides a picture of how each vehicle performed in the hands of the various AJAC journalists over the two days. 18 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016
Some of the relatively high and low consumption measurements by the same vehicle can also be attributed to the different types of roads encountered. And, of course, the drivers all have a different driving style, with some driving as they always would in their own cars, and others trying to extract the most efficiency they could out of the test vehicle they were driving. The AJAC EcoRun was supported by Natural Resources Canada, the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), Michelin North America (Canada) Inc., the Canadian Fuels Association, the Smart Drive Challenge, Scout Environmental, and the Chemical Guys Canada Auto Detailing. Not only did the AJAC Eco-Run highlight the latest advances by manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency and reduce the impact on our fragile environment, the journalists used driving techniques we all can adopt to reduce fuel consumption – and fuel costs – regardless of the age of our vehicles. ia Motors is a brand on a mission to create the highest quality automobiles in the world, and with its recent step up onto the podium as the JD Power and Associates number one brand in that organization’s much respected Initial Quality Study survey, it appears that the Korean auto giant is hitting its mark.
Why Mexico, you ask? Well, over the past 15 years, the country has become the choice destination for many of the major automotive manufacturers due to several factors. These include an abundant supply of relatively cheap land, inexpensive labour, the invaluable support of local governments, a close proximity to both the U.S. and Canadian markets, and a long list of secure trade agreements that allow Mexico to export vehicles duty-free to most world markets.
Taken as a whole, these elements combine to give Kia a substantial cost The company has just opened a brand-new factory in the Mexican advantage when compared to many of its rivals, which in turn helps the state of Nuevo León, where at present, the 2017 Forte sedan is being company keep prices competitive which benefits the consumer. manufactured for the North American market. TEST FLEET New for 2016: The Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid is an allnew model for 2016 and is based on the current generation of the Sonata sedan.
HYUNDAI SONATA PLUG-IN
Segment Competitors: Ford Fusion Energi, Audi A3 E-Tron, Chevrolet Volt, Ford C-Max Energi, Mercedes C350 Plug-in Hybrid, Toyota Prius Prime The Skinny: The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid builds on the already successful Sonata Hybrid by adding 43 km of all electric range and a battery that can be fully charged in as little as 2.5 hours with a 240V charging station. The electric motor in combination with the regular gasoline motor provides just over 200 horsepower combined which is more than enough for everyday driving situations. Pros: What’s not to like about a car that is as efficient as this one? Cons: The switch between the gas and electric motors when in normal hybrid mode isn’t always the smoothest. The Verdict: The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid is an ideal vehicle for those looking for the ultimate in efficiency and practicality.

JEEP RENEGADE TRAILHAWK
New for 2016: The Renegade remains relatively unchanged after entering as a new model for 2015. Segment Competitors: Mazda CX-3, Nissan Juke, Fiat 500X, Honda HR-V, Chevrolet Trax, Buick Encore, Kia Soul The Skinny: The Renegade is Jeep’s recent foray into the subcompact crossover market, but with that being said, they do their best to make their option stand out. The Renegade takes many of Jeep’s classic styling cues such as the seven-slot grille and circular headlights and also throws in a little off-road capability, especially with the Trailhawk model. Pros: Loved the look of our Trailhawk test model, especially the off-road inspired exterior features.

It now includes a sporty new chassis, more spacious and quieter cabin, great fuel economy and is a great improvement in the looks department over its predecessor.
Cons: We weren’t all that impressed with the Renegade’s cargo capacity. The Verdict: The Jeep Renegade is a fairly new option in what is becoming an ever more crowded subcompact crossover class, but we believe they have done enough with the Renegade in terms of looks, capability and practicality that will help it stand out from the rest.
HONDA CIVIC COUPE
Segment Competitors: Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Jetta, Kia Forte The Skinny: The Honda Civic continues to be billed as the Canada’s best-selling car and after spending some time in the newest model, it’s easy to see why. It gives you everything you’d expect from a Civic including efficiency, simplicity and practicality but adds in some fun and probably the best look ever sported by a Civic. Pros: We believe Honda has definitely got this one right in terms of looks as we caught more people taking a look than we thought possible. Cons: Although it came with many great features both inside and out, the $30K mark seems a bit high for a Civic. The Verdict: The Civic continues to do what it does well as it enters its 10th generation which is… well, everything. We see no reason why it will be dethroned as Canada’s best-selling car in the near future. 24 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016

INFINITI QX60
New for 2016: The QX60 underwent a slight update for 2016 as it now features new headlights and tailights as well as upgraded sound insulation and engine mounts which are meant to reduce noise at highway speeds. Segment Competitors: Audi Q7, Volvo XC90, Mercedes-Benz GLS, Acura MDX, Land Rover LR4, Lexus GX, Lincoln MKT The Skinny: The QX60 was Infiniti’s first 3-row crossover when it was introduced as a 2013 model and continues to enjoy success into 2016. It is a roomy, smooth, and nice looking large crossover that provides everything its competitors do at a very fair price. Pros: Has a well thought-out interior and provides a very smooth ride.

Cons: Definitely not quite as fun as the smaller QX50. The Verdict: The QX60 provides everything you’d want in a large 3-row crossover including ample room for both passengers and cargo, a smooth and quiet ride, and overall good looks, all at an affordable price.
JAGUAR XF S
Segment Competitors: Audi A6/A7, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Hyundai Genesis, Lexus ES and Mercedes E-Class. The Skinny: The Jag finds itself in a space with some very strong competitors. The fact that it is new and being Jaguar, it is different than the others. Not as popular, so the advantage is that you have a little more uniqueness and still have the performance capability. Pros: Great exhaust note and performance setup when in Dynamic Mode. Startup sequence with opening of air vents and rising gear shift dial. Cons: Don’t understand why the alarm sounds like an old school compact when you click the fob to lock the doors. The Verdict: The XF S has all the performance of it’s competitors and there are fewer around so you get the feeling you are driving something different. A great value in the category.

TOYOTA HIGHLANDER XLE
New for 2016: The Highlander remains relatively unchanged in 2016 a year ahead of the 2017 update. Segment Competitors: Dodge Durango, Mazda CX-9, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse The Skinny: The Toyota Highlander is Toyota’s entry into the 3-row mid-size crossover segment but, as can be expected for anything sporting a Toyota badge, it does so in a practical, efficient, and reliable package. A year ahead of its mid-cycle refresh, the 2016 Highlander still does plenty well enough to stay relevant. Pros: We love the interior layout of the Highlander, especially the tray that runs from above the shifter to the passenger door.
Price:............................................................. $43,651 (as tested) Engine: . ................................................. 3.5L DOHC 24-valve V6 Trans: ...................................................................... 6-speed auto Power: ........................................................ 270 hp @ 6,200 rpm Torque: . .................................................... 248 lb-ft @ 4,700 rpm Curb Weight: . ..............................................4,486 lbs / 2,035 kg Fuel Consumption: (L/100km – City/Hwy) . .................. 13.0/9.8
Cons: The third row is less than ideal for anyone besides small children. The Verdict: The Highlander was well received after its complete redesign in 2014 and in to 2016 it is easy to see why, as you get a combination of capability, comfort, technology and drivability that is rarely seen. Driving Program Puts Kids Behind the Wheel
Story and photos by Russell Purcell oyota Canada has partnered up the Russ Bond Agency to help give T youngsters an introduction to driving and the basics of road safety. KartSTART is an innovative program that puts kids, and their parents,
behind the wheel of a high-performance kart to teach them how a vehicle works. Bond, a retired auto racer and respected automotive journalist, brings his wealth of experience to aid new drivers in getting the most out of their first experience behind the wheel. Now in its sixth year of operation, the KartSTART program schedule includes multi-day events at ten cities across the country. The first event took place in late June just outside Vancouver at Greg Moore Raceway in Chilliwack, B.C., before Bond’s travelling road-show began its migration eastward eventually wrapping up in late August in Nova Scotia. Most of the event stops are held at dedicated kart tracks or racing facilities, but a new event in Red Deer, Alberta, required the organizers to create their own track and line it with hay bales. Safety first, after all. There are two sessions held each day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The students begin their experience by getting fitted with a quilted racing suit and a safety-rated helmet before assembling in the paddock classroom to pose for an individual photo keepsake and get an introduction to Bond and his team of instructors and support personnel. An informal, but very thorough lesson on the operation of the low-slung Arrow karts and a discussion about the day’s agenda eventually leads to the attendees being split into two manageable groups. Each student is carefully paired with their ride based on their size and weight, and the program hits the track. “What we teach here is how a vehicle works,” said Bond with a look of obvious pride as he surveyed the smiling faces of his many charges. “By that I mean what makes a vehicle go, what makes it stop, and what makes it turn. We teach our students what is happening to the vehicle as they travel down the road.” Bond sees the key to the success of his brainchild being the fact that 30 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016
Bond and his team show the students how the kart works with regards to steering, use of the throttle, and of course, the ever important brakes. The goal here is for the participants to understand how all these components work together. “With our program, if a driver goes too fast they will spin the kart – but that is all. From everyone’s perspective, it is much, much better for that to happen here in our karts, where we can simply walk over to the driver and talk to them about what happened.” After three track sessions in a lead-follow format behind the wheel (remember, this is an educational program, not an introduction to racing), the program moves back to the classroom where everyone is introduced to the latest technologies that comprise Toyota’s Star Safety systems. This suite of safety aides is a major selling feature for Toyota’s current product lineup and includes Vehicle Stability Control, ABS brakes, Traction Control, Electronic Brake Force System, Brake Assist, and Smart Stop Technology. “We started this journey four years ago with the [redesigned] MKZ, the first new product we launched. We said we would launch four ith new vehicles like the MKC crossover released in 2014 and vehicles in four years, and we followed up with the MKC, then the the highly anticipated 2017 Continental flagship still to come, refresh of the MKX. Giving a virtual walk-around of the facelifted MKZ, Wilson touched upon what is being coined as “distinctive design,” in reference to the significant exterior changes on the car. Easily the biggest stand out is the grille, which has evolved from a split-wing slatted style to a one-piece polished aluminum unit. “We took inspiration from the Continental with the new grille. There’s a Lincoln star motif in the mesh of the grille — you can see it has a confident face, bold lines and signature headlamps,” says Wilson. The company has been keen as of late to provide a personalized automotive experience extending beyond time actually spent behind the wheel. As a driver or passenger carrying the key fob approaches the vehicle, a logo shines onto the ground and door handle lights gently come alive as a welcoming gesture. On the 2017 MKZ, a flowing LED strip has been added inside the headlamp option of three powertrains: two varieties of gasoline engines and housing that illuminates in unison, contributing to the effect. a hybrid. Stepping into the cabin, there are familiar elements intermixed with Carol Wilson, product marketing manager at Lincoln Canada, spoke fresh ones. The push-button shifter on the left side of the centre about the automaker’s contemporary story and how the nameplate stack remains, allowing users to select a gear with a single press rather than moving a lever up and down. has gotten to where it is today. 32 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016
All pure gasoline variants are equipped with six-speed SelectShift automatic transmissions and all-wheel drive, while the Hybrid puts power down via an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive. I went for a cruise in both 2.0 L models along the sleepy Atlantic Ocean shoreline, first getting into the Hybrid. As expected, the ride was comfortable and mostly silent at normal speeds. That is, until I stepped on the throttle to pass a slow-moving semi truck and heard the substantial whine from the motor. Now, it’s not too unlike other partially electrified examples on the market, however I expected a bit a higher level of refinement from the MKZ. Its gasoline sibling was another story. Slightly faster, quieter and more fun to pilot thanks to Lincoln Drive Control that includes a sport mode which, when turned on, modifies the continuously controlled damping system and electric power assisted steering to give a more performance-oriented ride. “It’s more about the journey to the destination as opposed to the destination itself. We want to do what we can to make that journey more enjoyable.” On the other side of the stack is a button with a small steering wheel. This activates Enhanced Active Park Assist capable of not only self-parallel parking the MKZ but also manoeuvring it into perpendicular spots. In addition, there’s a park out feature to help squeeze out of tight spots. The only human input required is modulating the brake and accelerator. Elsewhere on the instrument panel, you may notice a smattering of physical knobs and switches have replaced the previous primarily touch interface resulting in what Wilson calls “a more tactile luxury experience for the customer.” This comes as a relief to people like myself who found the outgoing setup slow and unresponsive at times. At the launch event, two of the three engine offerings were on hand for testing: the 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder making 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, and the 2.0-litre Atkinson-Cycle hybrid producing a net 188 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque. A 3.0 L twin-turbo V6 is also available, but not until late summer.

Three-row crossovers appear to be fairly commonplace these days, as it appears most if not all manufacturers produce an example. This can be attributed to the fact that they provide amazing practicality and drivability in a package that is slightly more appealing than a classic minivan, but can do all the same things. A fine example of this is Mazda’s CX-9 which has been completely revamped for 2016 and now more prominently features the zoomzoom persona when compared to the outgoing model, and does so without sacrificing any of that aforementioned practicality.
Under the hood of the new model is where it might make some headlines, as Mazda has decided to ditch a V6 engine that many of its competitors use in favour of a SKYACTIV-G 2.5 T turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 227 horsepower (250 when premium fuel is used) and 310 lb-ft of torque. The use of the four-cylinder, which is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, undoubtedly will boost fuel efficiency and, it appeared during my time with the car, does so without sacrificing any noticeable performance.
It had been exactly ten years since the first generation CX-9 debuted back in 2006, and it is safe to say it had been long overdue for a makeover. Starting with the exterior, the new CX-9 now features a much better look that definitely relays the KODO design theme sported by most other vehicles in the Mazda lineup. This gives the CX-9 a much more athletic appearance and really helps out stand out when compared to other vehicles in its class.
The previous version of the CX-9 was fairly fun to drive for a vehicle of its ilk, and the new version has further improved on that aspect. The suspension feels quite firm, which was especially evident when taking a corner at high speeds, but not so firm as to make you feel every little bump when putting around in the city. The ride was a very quiet one and the heads-up display allowed you to focus your attention forward and on the road.
Inside of the new CX-9 is a well thought-out and upscale looking interior that is very reminiscent of some of the luxury brand threerow crossover offerings. It features the same rotary dial control and tablet-looking screen as the other Mazda models which, once you get used to it, is really quite easy to use. Our top-of the line Signature Model featured rich Nappa leather and rosewood trim that really added a very nice luxurious touch.
The new CX-9 starts at an MSRP of $35,300 and goes all the way up to the $50,000 mark when it comes to the Signature model that we tested, which is about the norm for vehicles in this class. When you consider the luxury, fun-factor, and overall good looks of the new CX-9, it seems more and more like a bargain that could even give some of the true luxury crossovers a run for their money.

The springs and shock absorbers are borrowed from the hatch and have been stiffened for 2017 to give better handling prowess “The kind of big unique thing with the G4 versus the hatch is the than before. The front brake discs and rear drums are bigger as rear seat legroom,” says Don Ulmer, senior product planning well, and together gave me a higher sense of confidence than expected while going manoeuvring through some tight back road turns.
Above-Average Efficiency N
The most significant benefit of a three-cylinder motor, of course, is above-average efficiency. With the optional CVT — a five-speed manual transmission is standard — the G4 has a combined city/ highway fuel consumption rating of 6.4 L/100 km fuel, according to Natural Resources Canada. During the course of my own driving, I bested the advertised number, achieving a phenomenal combined 5.9 L/100 km in real-world conditions. The 2017 Mitsubishi Mirage G4 is available in two trims: ES, starting at MSRP $14,498, and the fully loaded SEL at $18,298 that adds 15-inch aluminum wheels, automatic climate control, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob and more.
manager at Mitsubishi Canada. “It’s actually got more legroom than the Lancer.” That may sound almost unbelievable when you look at the car’s diminutive shape, but the wheelbase is approximately 500 millimetres longer compared to the five-door. The exterior design is also different between the two models, the hatchback going for a sportier appearance with a more aggressive lower front bumper valance, mesh grille and slimmer profile headlights. The G4, on the other hand, is arguably classier and aimed at a slightly older demographic that likely has kids, hence the conveniently larger back seats and “more conventional body style,” says Ulmer. There are smoked chrome accents on the slatted grille, foglight bezels and trunk, along with unique badging above the 36 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2016
