MW has recently unveiled the 7th generation of one of its most popular models, the 5-Series Sedan. For 2017, the 5-Series has been newly developed and has allowed for a significant weight loss of up to 100 kg with the increased use of materials like magnesium, aluminum and high-strength steel. The updated model will feature a new user interface, gesture control, the latest generation of Head-Up Display and an improved voice control system, all of which marks a new era of personalized connectivity when it comes to BMW. On the outside, the 5-Series remains a prime example of a midsize sport sedan and features new standard LED headlights, an available M Sport Package, 13 colour options, active kidney grille slats, and a visually lower centre of gravity. Inside, the 16-way electrically adjustable seats now feature a massage function that offers eight different programs for the ultimate in comfort. Two new engine options will be offered; a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine in the 530i xDrive Sedan that puts out 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0L inline 6cylinder that pushes out 335 horsepower. The all-new BMW 5-Series Sedan will be available in Canada starting February 2017.

Google to Make Android Auto Available in Any Car Google announced recently that it will be releasing Android Auto 2.0 for any phone that is running Android 5.0 or newer. The update allows users to use Android Auto on their phone CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

instead of through a vehicles infotainment screen, thus allowing Android users with older cars that aren’t yet compatible with Android Auto to enjoy all the same features using their phone’s screen. No matter the car’s age or even if it doesn’t have an infotainment screen, the new update will bring your favourite apps and services together in one place, making them easily and safely accessible. Android Auto allows you to control things like music through one of the many available popular apps, phone functions such as text messaging or calling, and navigation through the always great Google Maps. The update also has the ability to automatically start the app when the phone is paired with Bluetooth and will be available very soon. Given the nature of the update, it’s probably a safe bet to expect Apple to do something similar with its CarPlay program in the near future.

North American Car and Utility Vehicle of the Year Award Finalists Announced in L.A.

Distribution Manager: Brenda Washington brenda@rpmcanada.ca

Recently, at a conference that precedes the Los Angeles Auto Show, the finalists for the North American Car of the Year and the Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards were announced. The Car of the Year award has been around since 1994 and sees three finalists, while the Utility Vehicle of the Year award is introduced for 2017 and also sees three finalists. Both awards are judged by a panel of 60 professional automotive journalists from the U.S. and Canada, who base their judging on things like innovation, design, safety, performance, technology and value. The finalists for the Car of the Year include Chevrolet Bolt, Genesis G90 and Volvo S90, all of which are brand new for 2017 and boast a variety of technology and features that allowed them to stand out from their competition. On the Utility Vehicle of the Year side of things, the Chrysler Pacifica, Jaguar F-Pace and Mazda CX-9 were named the finalists. All three examples bring something very different to the table, and are all worthy competitors. The award winners will be announced on January 9th at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan.

Transport Canada Posts Plans to Make Back-Up Cameras Mandatory Transport Canada has recently posted its plans to make back-up cameras mandatory in all new cars and light-trucks beginning in May

of 2018. The plan, which was posted in the Canada Gazette for a 75day comment period, follows in the footsteps of U.S. regulations that passed back in 2014 which also called for cameras to be mandatory in 2018. Transport Canada estimates that back-up mishaps caused 27 deaths and more than 1,500 injuries from 2004 to 2009. Back-up cameras and rear parking sensors are already available on most

vehicles, but they usually are featured on high-trim vehicles which are, of course, more expensive. The new law would require every car, no matter where they fall in terms of trim level, manufactured after May 1, 2018 to come standard with a backup camera.

FIRST DRIVE: 2017 ACURA NSX

A Worthy Successor

Story by Gerry Frechette, photos courtesy of Acura Canada Fans of Japanese supercars sure do have to endure long waits between generations, especially if they live in North America. Case in point, the Acura NSX. The first-generation car, designed in the late 1980s, lasted until 2005, and fans of Honda-style performance have been waiting, and waiting...until now. As long ago as 2007, Honda announced it would be building a replacement for the NSX, and showed a concept at the Detroit Auto Show which was clearly a front-engined GT intended to have a V10 engine. Then the market crash happened in 2008, and everything was put off until 2012 at Detroit, when the latest concept, looking production-ready, was shown. It took over four more years to bring the new NSX to market this past summer, and it is definitely worth the wait. It’s pretty obvious that electrification is the future of the automobile, and that applies to high-performance cars too. The characteristics of electric motors, such as instant on-off and maximum torque from the first spin, lend themselves very well to tasks other than simply powering a car down the road for 200 km, as laudable as that may be. They are ideal for augmenting the power of a regular engine, as well as being put to use on individual wheels to improve handling characteristics. The Acura RLX sedan has had this system for a couple of years now, with a motor on each rear wheel operating independently to optimize handling. So now, picture that entire system being rotated 180 degrees, in a mid-engined car with rear-wheel drive, and the two front wheels each driven by an electric motor. This is the NSX’s all-wheel drivetrain. 12 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

hp and 476 lb-ft. Which is, as they say, adequate. So, technically, the NSX is a hybrid (not a plug-in) because the motors occasionally will propel the car in “Quiet” mode. But who cares about that? We certainly didn’t, and in our 30-minute drive, the Mode Selector went right past Sport and was glued to Sport Plus for optimal performance on the fabulous winding country roads we were blessed with.

That mid-engine is a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 with 500 horsepower, and that in itself sounds like a great recipe for a supercar. Interestingly, the valve openings are not controlled by VTEC, and the angle between the cylinder banks is 75 degrees. It pumps out 406 lb-ft of torque as low as 2,000 rpm.

In any corner you can think of – hairpins to big fast curves, all taken at a rate with little regard for legalities – the NSX carved the turn as if it couldn’t get down to the apex and out of the corner fast enough. That feeling is the work of the electric motors, which instantly give more or less torque to the two front wheels as needed, to eliminate understeer, and then assist with driving the car out of the corner with maximum traction. Backing up the motors is a set of “magnetic ride” shock absorbers that are just as quick to provide optimal damping, so that the car corners flat at all times. The optional carbon-ceramic brakes on our tester felt smooth in the light use we gave them. We’d love to give them heavy use, on a test track. For that, there is a Track Mode, too.

But add three electric motors to the mix, and things get more interesting. Between the engine and the nine-speed twin-clutch transaxle is a motor that contributes another 109 lb-ft at 1 rpm. Two more 54-lb-ft motors drive the front wheels. You might think that the total torque would be over 600 lb-ft, but Acura rates the system at 573

It’s truly uncanny how well the NSX handles. Acura’s approach (shared by others in the high-end business) is clearly the future of performance cars – electric motors as performance enhancements first, with some degree (probably more than the NSX delivers) of all-electric operation in the city.

DEC/JAN 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 13

The thing with the NSX is that it rewards a high level of driver involvement, but doesn’t demand it. The potentially high-strung nature of the 500-hp V6 is dulled somewhat by the turbos as expected, but also largely by the electric motors, which are constantly flashing on and off to smooth out the power delivery. In that sense, it is a comfortable car to drive, and the interior contributes to that impression. Other than the obviously low door opening like any such car, once inside, the feeling is one of comfort and space. Almost like a twoseat luxury sedan. The NSX is certainly as wide as any big sedan, so that allowed Acura to include nice big seats that will suit a lot of different builds, and enough room for taller 6-foot-plus drivers. The seats are multi-adjustable, of course, so you can clamp down with bolsters, or loosen them up for highway cruising. Finding a good driving position was easy, even with the steering column that didn’t telescope out as much as desired, and the NSX should prove to be a comfortable tourer. Don’t expect an infotainment interface that is any better than in regular Acura models, though. Interestingly, the new NSX was conceived and is built by hand in Ohio, USA, unlike the original which was a project of the enthusiast engineers at the head office in Japan. As such, it has design details that will appeal to North American tastes, but which don’t diminish its supercar credentials. Its suitability as an everyday car can be traced to its heritage. One has to think that other versions of the NSX without the motors in the front will be built at a lesser price; indeed, Acura will race such a version next year in GT3 competition. But for now, the price of entry is $189,900, with the many options available pushing it nearer to $250K. At that, it is a small fraction of the price of the hybrid Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche models, with less power and cachet, of course, but outright performance that is essentially the same. Like, zero-to-60 mph in the low three-second range. 11.2-second quarter-mile. Top end of 197 mph, electronically limited, no less. And 1.08g cornering. All that, in a car one expects will have Honda reliability. In other words, the NSX is an everyday supercar, as a few other cars can claim, but one with the latest in electric motor technology, giving it dynamic handling and powertrain refinement that are not exceeded in a street-legal performance car. In that sense, it is a very worthy successor to the original. 14 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

Acceleration is brisk and linear, and the engine produces a delightful exhaust note that is raspy enough to tickle the ears, but not become bothersome or intrusive when cruising. The car’s independent multi-link suspension responds well to road irregularities, dips and bumps, and helped keep the car tracking straight and true. The Elantra Sport’s handling is also aided by the fact that its chassis has been manufactured using what Hyundai calls Advanced High Strength Steel. The resulting “Superstructure” significantly increases the car’s torsional rigidity, and by using advanced adhesives and sound deadening technologies in its construction, the engineering team has made the car both safer and quieter than many of its competitors. We especially liked the audio readouts that showed what was XC90 SUV last year, and it has proven to be a hit, with many accolades playing at any given time on all your favourite satellite radio stations and awards. Now, we have the S90 mid-size luxury sedan, and it is – no more need to channel hop just to see what is playing! nothing less than a revelation in Volvo design, understated and refined in a very Swedish way. The Volvo grille is carried over in a larger size, Volvo has stated that it will now equip its vehicles only with four-cylinbut the overall appearance shares little with previous Volvos – except der engines, odd considering they have had fives and straight sixes until recently, and there are still buyers in this class who want sixes for maybe the unadorned sides of the 244 sedan forty years ago. smoothness and image. It’s good to see Volvo not power delivery, and pumps out a lofty (for its size) 316 hp and an adequate 295 lb-ft of torque, through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive..

I

The engine moves the S90 down the road as quickly as most people will want, but it does little to overcome the impression that this car is made for luxury and safety first, with sportiness really not a concern. It does make “four cylinder” droning sounds, and the chassis, in particular the steering, could use a little massaging, but given its intended market, the S90 did comport itself in a civilized manner. Coming soon is a plug-in hybrid with 400 hp, which will address both fuel efficiency and power, one thinks. Also coming is the V90 wagon model on the same chassis, which could be a regular station wagon as shown at the L.A. Auto Show, and/or a more rugged Cross Country version. And then, hopefully we can look forward to more models that will bring Volvo firmly back into the luxury discussion. In the meantime, the S90 T6 is well worth a look in the mid-size luxury class, as the brand continues its renaissance. 20 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

Best New Small Car Finalists DEC/JAN 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 23

TEST FLEET New for 2017: The Lincoln MKZ received a facelift for 2017 and follows the same design language as the all-new Continental. It received a new grille and headlights and forgoes the 3.7L V6 engine options for the new 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6.

LINCOLN MKZ RESERVE

Segment Competitors: Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Lexus IS, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Jaguar XE, Infiniti Q50, Cadillac ATS, Acura TLX, Volkswagen CC, Volvo S60, Buick Regal The Skinny: The Lincoln MKZ received a model refresh for 2017, the most prominent of which includes a new twin-turbo V6 engine that pushes out ample power. The interior is loaded with amazing features such as massaging front seats, and the outside has an updated design that will get some second looks. Pros: We love the look of the updated front end, found the drive to be quite luxurious, and were impressed with the trunk space. Cons: Not saying we wouldn’t eventually get used to it, but the push-button shifting is definitely different at first. The Verdict: The Lincoln MKZ finds itself in a crowded entrylevel luxury segment, but after spending some time behind the wheel of it and not finding a whole lot to complain about, we think it is definitely an option to be considered when looking to buy a car of this ilk.

NISSAN ARMADA PLATINUM

New for 2017: After a one year hiatus, the Nissan Armada fullsize SUV is back for 2017 and features a great new look which is based on the new Titan pickup, and also has a new V8 engine that pushes out more horsepower and torque. Segment Competitors: Ford Expediton, Chevrolet Suburban, Toyota Sequoia, GMC Yukon The Skinny: The Nissan Armada is a huge full-size, threerow SUV that’s as capable as it is practical. It boasts nearly 400 horsepower and has the ability to tow up to 8,500 lbs. thanks to a new V8 engine. Pros: We love the all-new look of the Armada and were impressed by the fact that it was fairly easy to manoeuvre in a big city setting.

Cons: For an SUV of this size, we expected a bit more 3rd row room. The Verdict: The Armada is a fully capable full-size SUV that features a new level of refinement that easily surpasses the old version. In a segment that prominently features some great North American options, we firmly believe the Armada is worth a look.

TOYOTA COROLLA iM

Segment Competitors: Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3, Honda Civic, Ford Focus, Nissan Sentra, Chevrolet Cruze, Kia Forte5, Hyundai Elantra, Subaru Impreza, Dodge Dart The Skinny: The iM is a welcome addition to the Corolla lineup as it provides an alternative and sporty looking option to the already popular sedan that may help attract customers it otherwise wouldn’t have. It provides many great standard features, an overall good look, and all the practicality that comes with a typical hatchback. Pros: We were impressed by the iM’s passenger and cargo room. Cons: It’s not quite as fun to drive as it looks like it should be. The Verdict: The iM comes packed with a number of standard features that most would feel would put it high above its price point and when added to a practical and nice looking package, Toyota should do just fine in the compact hatchback segment. 24 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

Segment Competitors: Porsche Macan, BMW X3, Mercedes GLC-Class, Audi SQ5, Cadillac XT5, Lexus RX, Lincoln MDX, Acura RDX The Skinny: The Jaguar F-Pace is a small, luxurious and performance-oriented crossover SUV that combines Jaguar performance with the practicality of a CUV for the first time. It is incredibly fun to drive, provides ample room for up to five passengers, and has an overall great look. Pros: Our supercharged V6 tester accelerated very fast and featured a sport-tuned suspension that handled corners with ease.

Cons: Not a con for everyone (us included) but the Supercharged V6 tends to be louder than expected from inside the cabin. The Verdict: Overall, the F-Pace is a great vehicle in terms of drivability, practicality and appearance, and when added to the fact that it comes at a very competitive price, we believe Jaguar has a winner on their hands (or paws).

BMW 750i xDRIVE

Segment Competitors: Cadillac CT6, Audi A8, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS, Jaguar XJ, Genesis G90, Maserati Quattroporte The Skinny: The new BMW 750i xDrive is a truly amazing car both inside and out as it features BMW’s patented good lucks and is loaded with more technology features than we ever thought possible. Pros: Provides an incredibly smooth ride and great acceleration, plus we loved some of the new technology features such as massage front seats, gesture control, and the iPad size screens on the back of each front seat. Cons: Very tough to write something here, but if we have to, we’ll go with not the greatest fuel economy from the V8, but that is to be expected. The Verdict: The BMW 7-Series is exactly the vehicle that should come to mind when you’re thinking about a true luxury sedan. It provides a smooth ride, fun factor, and all of the options and features you could ever want.

Price: . ..............................................................$113,900 (MSRP) Engine: . ............................... 4.4L Twin-turbo 32-valve DOHC V8 Trans: ...................................................................... 8-speed auto Power: ........................................................ 445 hp @ 6,000 rpm Torque: . .................................................... 480 lb-ft @ 1,800 rpm Curb Weight: . ..............................................4,650 lbs./ 2,109 kg Fuel Consumption: (L/100km – City/Hwy) . .................. 13.9/9.1

RAM 1500 ECODIESEL

Segment Competitors: Toyota Tundra, Nissan Titan, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Honda Ridgeline The Skinny: The Ram 1500 continues to set the benchmark for half-ton pickups as they have proven to be one of the most capable options on the market today. Our Laramie Longhorn tester with the EcoDiesel engine option performed admirably providng us with great capability and fuel efficiency. Pros: We were amazed by the fuel efficiency and cannot say enough good things about the way it drives.

Price: . ............................................................... $54,590 (MSRP) Engine: . .............................. 3.0L turbodiesel 24-valve DOHC V6 Trans: ...................................................................... 8-speed auto Power: ........................................................ 240 hp @ 3,600 rpm Torque: . .................................................... 420 lb-ft @ 2,000 rpm Curb Weight: . ..............................................5,702 lbs./ 2,586 kg Fuel Consumption: (L/100km – City/Hwy) . .................. 11.6/8.4

Cons: For whatever reason, we cannot get used to the knob shifter. The Verdict: The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is currently the only diesel option available in the half-ton class, and given the way it performed for us, we would certainly expect to see its strong sales numbers continue. ROAD TEST: 2017 FORD FOCUS RS

The Smile Generator Story and photos by Russell Purcell

ith the introduction of the Focus RS, the Ford Motor Company has brought a game changer to the compact performance category. This potent package packs plenty of punch, and delivers a driving experience that can only be matched by much more exclusive (read: expensive) automobiles. The front-engine, compact, four-door hatchback is powered by a highspirited turbocharged four-cylinder engine of 2.3-litres in capacity, which produces 345 horsepower, 325 lb-ft of torque, and smiles for miles. The all-wheel-drive powertrain helps keep this rolling dynamo planted to the road surface while you cycle through the gears of its silky-smooth, and very robust, 6-speed manual transmission. No automatic gearbox is available, which will go a long way to cementing this car’s status as future performance icon right out of the gate. hustle to 100 km/h from a standstill in a respectable 4.7 seconds. Driving with a heavy foot tends to spank your wallet at the pumps, so Ford’s enAcceleration is brisk and an exhilarating affair, especially when launch gineers have equipped the RS’s EcoBoost engine with Auto Start/Stop control is activated. In the hands of an enthusiastic driver, the RS can technology to reduce emissions and save a little fuel at lights. The Focus RS is a driver’s car, so it has been outfitted with four distinct driving modes - Normal, Sport, Track, and Drift - to allow the operator to set the car up to match the his or her sporting aspirations as well as road conditions. Parameters such as throttle response, steering, brake feel, suspension damping, and power delivery will adapt to preset programs to help the car perform at optimal levels. Further adjustments can be made in short order to both the suspension settings and the traction control system at the touch of a button. Handling is communicative and predictable, and the car has been painstakingly engineered to deliver outstanding structural stiffness. A well-sorted chassis, quick ratio steering, and adjustable suspension help deliver one of the most visceral driving experiences available at a seemingly bargain price. Add to this technical voodoo in the form of brake-assisted torque vectoring, and the RS carves through twists and turns with unmatched precision. 36 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

The interior is based on that of lesser Focus models, but the layout and functionality are very good for a car in this category. All the essential gauges and switchgear fall readily to both hand and eye, and it is easy for the driver to get comfortable in short order, as both the seat and steering wheel seem infinitely adjustable (albeit manually). There is a secondary pod of gauges situated above the centre stack on the dashboard that will allow you to keep tabs on turbo boost pressure, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. Other niceties include a power moonroof, high-definition 8-inch touchscreen with navigation and Ford’s SYNC3 infotainment suite, dual-zone climate control, and a premium Sony audio system with 10 speakers. Distinctive 19-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped with Michelin’s ultra-performance Pilot Sport Cup2 tires, heated mirrors, fog lights, perimeter alarm, engine block heater, and a car cover are also standard on the RS. The Focus RS features distinctive, but quite understated, styling, which is a good thing given its performance capabilities. The absence of exaggerated and over-sized flares and wings will help you fly somewhat under the radar in this German-born road hooligan; however, the subtle spoilers, vents and body enhancements that are present are all fully functional and aid in improving performance. The Nitrous Blue paint on our test vehicle is a $995 option, but it has far more visual impact than any of the other three colours available at the moment, which are the more staid shades of white, black or gray. The blue almost appears to be a matte finish on overcast days, but when the sun shines it comes alive with flecks of gold sparkle. In the cabin, you will find Recaro-designed, heavily-bolstered sport seats that provide exceptional support whether tossing the car around a track, accelerating like a rocket, or exercising the very confident Brembo brakes. I am happy to report that these leather trimmed, heated seats are also very comfortable, as I took this car on a long distance trip to wine country, and was rested and relaxed upon arrival.

The Ford Focus RS is a really special automobile as it offers its owner two distinct driving personas. The RS is perfectly happy to tool around town providing practical transportation on a daily basis, but it has been so well-engineered and equipped that it is just as content to make you look like a hero at the track. In fact, in the latter case, the RS will readily allow you to fight way outside your weight class. It’s that good. FIRST DRIVE: HONDA CIVIC HATCHBACK

Getting back to what makes the vehicle versatile: due to its practical shape, this Civic can hold up to 728 litres of cargo behind the second row seating, which is 82 L more than the Ford Focus and 156 more than the Mazda3. My co-driver and I placed two carry-on bags inside and could have easily fit two more. For privacy, the hatchback has a tonneau cover hidden inside a housing mounted off to the side that slides across, rather than a conventional cover retracting outwards from a bulky bar that needs to be removed when hauling large objects.

Year of the Civic Story and photos by Benjamin Yong onda Canada is calling 2016 the “Year of the Civic.” While this H sounds like marketing speak, there are solid facts to justify the title: it was named the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada

The interior remains largely identical to the sedans and coupes, and the engine is also familiar. In Canada, all hatchback versions of the Civic use the same 1.5 L turbocharged four-cylinder engine similar to the unit found in upper level 10th gens. Outputs vary slightly between the grades: the base LX generates 174 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, and via performance tuning, a different exhaust system and the requirement of premium fuel, Sport and Sport Touring eke out an additional six horsepower for a total of 180. Both a six-speed manual transmission and CVT are offered. As expected, the small displacement motor can become noisy under heavy throttle. The acceleration actually surprised me, though, particularly when exiting an on-ramp to merge onto the highway. The car pulled quickly and strongly and produced a good amount of power throughout the rpm range. Handling, like every other modern Civic, is excellent. Same goes for fuel efficiency — practising virtually no fuel-saving driving techniques, the combined city and highway consumption over several hundred kilometres averaged approximately 6L/100km.

Slotting in above the other two body styles in terms of features and pricing, the LX starts at $21,390, the Sport at $25,190 and the Sport (AJAC) Canadian Car of the Year, the North American Car of the Year, Touring at $29,390. The other half, however, is completely new. Inspired by European styling — the hatch is built in the U.K., after all — the liftgate steeply rakes downward, intersecting with the upper corners of the taillights that blend into a flared lip section. A cool discreet spoiler sits on top of the rear window, and the rear bumper features a pair of large blacked-out vents giving a distinctly aggressive appearance. Custom Bodied Fiat with Snob Appeal! Story and photos by Nigel Matthews, additional photo courtesy of Wikimedia

E

duardo Bianchi began his manufacturing career in 1885 building bicycles. He soon moved into automobiles by 1899 and manufactured a number of different models during the following 83 years. Like most wartime manufacturers, his company built tanks as part of the war effort. By 1940, the company focus was on motorcycle and commercial vehicles, including vans with Mercedes engines. The racing motorcycles were very well known and won many victories. Eduardo Bianchi died in 1946 in a car accident, and the ownership of the firm passed to his son, Giuseppe.

In 1957, the company returned to automobile manufacturing and introduced a small car based on the Fiat “Nuova 500” which had been introduced in 1955. The Fiat 500 was a huge post war success in Italy; it was the successor to the Fiat “Topolino,” regarded by many as the Italian Model-T! The Topolino, just like the Model-T, gave the lower middle-class the opportunity to become motorized and mobile. The Fiat 500 was the base vehicle for a number of Italian Carrozzerie (coachbuilders) enabling them to offer cars that looked different, including faux sports cars that included some deluxe features. These models enabled the average person the opportunity to keep up with the “Joneses” or in some cases beat them! These coachbuilt cars became very popular and Fiat did not want to be left out of the lucrative sales opportunity. Fiat formed a partnership with Bianchi and Pirelli; the cars would be known as Autobianchi, sold through selected Fiat dealers. The Autobianchi came with Fiat factory backing and warranty. By the mid-’60s, Fiat had sold 250,000 Fiat 500s, and the first Autobianchi was called the Bianchina. This model sold at a 20-percent premium above the cost of a base model Fiat 500. By 1968, Fiat decided to buy out the two partners and merged Autobianchi into the giant Fiat Company. The model shown in the picture is an Autobianchi Cabriolet driven by the bumbling Inspector Clouseau (played by actor Peters Sellers) in the original Pink Panther movie.

DEI CryO2 Intercooler Spray Kit

ProCharger Stage 2 and HO Supercharging Systems for Ford Mustang

DEI’s CryO2 Intercooler spray kit is able to harness the super cooling cryogenic properties of CryO2 to dramatically lower intake charge temperatures, which results in more horsepower at a lower cost than nitrous. It is a non-invasive system and enhances thermal transfer ability of the intercooler to lower air temperatures as much as 35 percent. For turbocharged or supercharged systems, the sprayer mounts directly to the front of the intercooler and vents CO2 directly onto the cooling fins. The kit includes a 10 lb. tank and mounting brackets, a cryogenic solenoid valve and CO2 fittings, and electrical hardware.

ProCharger’s Supercharger System offerings for the 2015-2017 Ford Mustang GT have recently seen an increase in power additions and come available in both HO and Stage 2 systems. The Stage 2 system now comes standard with Deatschwerks 95 lb (1000cc injectors) and a JMS PowerMAX fuel pump booster to support even higher horsepower as the system can provide gains of up to 65-70 percent more horsepower. The HO system is one of the most cost-effective ways to bolt on huge power to your Mustang, and have been known to crank out over 600+ horsepower at just 8 psi of boost.

PARTING SHOTS If this wasn’t an accident, it is just plain mean.

Hard to tell if this was just bad or impressive.

Jeep Cherokee meet a scissor lift.

Not surprising that this would draw a crowd. Badly parked cars seems to be the theme of this edition of Parting Shots.

This has to be one of the worst use of two spots we’ve ever seen.

Parting Shots is where we share those photos that defy classification. If you’ve seen something four-wheeled (or otherwise) that you would like to share, please send it to partingshots@rpmcanada.ca 46 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016
