The Times They Are A Changing! F 2002

or those regular readers who have been faithfully picking up their copy of RPM Magazine at their favourite retail location the past 17 years, it must have come as quite a shock when searching around the store only to find that RPM is now Cars Plus Magazine. So you may be asking, why change the name after all these years? Good question indeed. To which the simple answer is; to streamline our offerings of publications in a movement that will see additional Plus Magazines in the future, focused on other targeted segments of the automotive aftermarket and recreation markets.

2005

With this change it also enables us to provide more clarity to each segment we cover editorially. Readers, hobbyists and consumers alike now desire specialized information on the topic or service they are researching, whether in print or online. This change will provide that clarity from what was a more general editorial offering in RPM, to more focused features on new cars, SUVs and aftermarket parts you will find in the pages of Cars Plus. The advertisers that support these pages also benefit from the change in that it provides additional confidence that their ads are being seen by the best targeting of readers possible. To further highlight and provide greater focus on specific products, we will be presenting all the latest offerings from the aftermarket parts industry, as well as from OE manufacturers of new cars and SUVs in the form of Buyers’ Guides. Each issue will contain several guides that provide readers with descriptions, specifications and in some cases recommendations of products and services offered for the new car and SUV markets. You will also find more in-depth features on the cars and SUVs currently available at your local car dealership, as well as more coverage of the vehicles that are coming around the bend, and about the people that create them. For some, change is hard to accept. For others, it makes them downright sad, and there are those for whom it creates a feeling of excitement. For us here at RPM Media, we are feeling a mixture of each. It is hard to let go of a name and identity that we’ve identified with for so many years. It almost feels like we are losing a friend. But for the most part, we are really excited about this new-found focus and all of the great opportunities that lay ahead of us to provide new content that informs and educates readers for the next 17 years… and beyond! Sincerely,

2010

Porsche Debuts the New 2017 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S in Detroit Porsche has unveiled its next iteration of the always incredible, top-of-the-line 911 Turbo and 911 Turbo S models in Detroit with both models coming available in either coupe or convertible body styles. The 3.8-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder engine that powers the 911 Turbo now makes 540 horsepower with the Turbo S’s power now being pushed up to an astounding 580 horsepower. Both engines now have a dynamic boost function which improves throttle response during spirited driving situations and maintains the boost pressure during load changes in order to do so. These new powertrain enhancements allow the 911 Turbo S to reach 60 mph (96 km/h) in just 2.8 seconds, with a top track speed of 205 mph (330 km/h). Also new to all 911 Turbo models is the standard Sport Chrono Package, which includes the new GT sport steering wheel which is equipped with a mode switch that consists of a rotary ring that can be used to select one of the four drivetrain modes - Normal, Sport, Sport Plus or Individual. The exterior of the new models has not been forgotten, as the cars now feature a redesigned front end, new 20-inch wheels, and three-dimensional rear lights.

Area 27 Breaks Ground Area 27, the membership-based motorsport club in the South Okanagan region of B.C., passed another significant milestone on December 16 with the ground-breaking ceremony at the track site near Oliver. With the Osoyoos Indian Band on hand for traditional celebrations, Chief Clarence Louie joined Area 27 executives Bill Drossos and Trevor Seibert (whose company, Lake Excavating, is also the general contractor for the project) to move the first earth with the ceremonial shovel, in front of the actual heavy equipment that went to work shortly thereafter. The event was a milestone for the club and the cumulative effort of several years of work scouting for land and obtaining a 99-year lease for 227 acres with the Government of Canada and the Osoyoos Indian Band. After a short break in January for what passes as winter in Canada’s only desert, construction will resume in February, and the next occasion to anticipate will be the first laps of Area 27 by happy members in the summer.

Global Debut of All-New Lexus LC 500 Luxury Coupe

At this year’s annual running of the 2016 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Lexus’ newest luxury coupe, the LC 500, made its global debut and surely didn’t disappoint with its stunning styling and performance. Lexus used a lot of the LF-LC concept’s design ideology to make the LC 500, as this new production model shares many of the same design cues. The new model features an athletic aerodynamic shape, a low, wide, imposing stance, and an available carbon fibre roof. The front fascia boasts a powerful interpretation of the Lexus signature grille, while a rear diffuser and available active rear spoiler help manage airflow during performance driving situations. Inside is a driver-focused cockpit that has been designed so that the driver’s hip point is as close as possible to the vehicle’s centre of gravity, where feedback will be most communicative to the driver. FCA Is Top-Selling Car Company in Canada

FCA Canada has announced that it has achieved its highest annual sales in its 90-year history, selling 293,061 units, and thus is Canada’s top-selling automotive brand in all of 2015. A strong year was finished off even stronger when the company posted its best December sales numbers since 2001. The Jeep brand continuously gained momentum throughout the year, posting greater than a 13-percent sales increase, representing over 9,177 incremental sales for the year. The total number of sales was 79,680, with the Cherokee leading the sales in every month. The Ram brand also set an annual record in 2015 with 96,744 products sold, a three-percent increase over the previous year. The next-generation Chrysler minivan was unveiled in Detroit this year, but the current Town & Country finished strong by achieving its own annual sales record of 9,001 units over the past year. 12 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE fEBRUARY/MARCH 2016

reminiscent of the first generation Camaro. The roof possesses a more defined shape, and the side profile has a flowing, fastbacklike appearance. “From every angle, you’ll never mistake this for anything but a Camaro,” says design director Tom Peters. “We’ve taken that iconic design and amplified its proportions to reflect a more dynamic driving experience — like the T-shirt on a muscular physique.”

From far away, the exterior seems familiar, and that’s on purpose. Visually, the car appears to be significantly wider and longer, when It’s not until you move closer that you start to notice the differ- in fact it’s 20 millimetres narrower and 57 mm shorter. Combining aggressive aesthetics with real-world functionality are brake cooling ducts integrated into the front bumper and a set of air vents carved in the hood. There is also a built-in “air curtain” that guides incoming air around the wheels to reduce drag. Despite the classically inspired styling, the Camaro is chock full of 21st century amenities. Speaking of suspension, the Camaro introduces a multi-link MacPherson strut setup advertised to give increased control and better communication from the electric steering. I had the good fortune of being able to take the rear-wheel drive beast for a lap around a small track, and especially after properly putting it through its paces in a controlled environment, in my opinion the improvements made by the company are tangible rather than just being marketing highlights on paper. I

s anyone really surprised that BMW’s bread-and-butter 3-Series sedan accounts for one-quarter of total sales for the company worldwide? Over the course of its 40-year history, the snappy sedan just keeps getting better, and for 2016, the 340i gets a host of improvements, the biggest being a brand-new six-cylinder motor.

bump with no detectible distortion at higher volumes. It’s especially noticeable since the sound deadening throughout the 340i keeps exterior sounds to a minimum.

If you encounter one on the road, you might notice that there’s something different about the front of the car — the face has been given a subtle nip and tuck to appear more chiseled and sporty. The most noticeable of the changes is the headlights, now boasting full LED lighting, standard on our 340i xDrive press vehicle. There is also a matching set of LED taillights at the re-sculpted back end.

The silence is surprisingly broken each time you press the start button, causing the engine to emit a little burble through the exhaust pipes hinting at what awaits. The new turbocharged 3.0-litre mill makes 320 horsepower, 20 more than the outgoing model, and 330 lb-ft of torque, good for a 0-100 km/h time of 4.8 seconds when mated to the eight-speed Steptronic automatic tranny (a six-speed manual remains to be offered for purists). To be honest, I wasn’t expecting the amount of punch off the line from this conventional four-door BMW.

There hasn’t been much modification to the cabin area, and that could well be a positive rather than a negative. Sliding onto the buttery soft Saddle Brown leather seats — comfortable but busily designed with basket-weave-like details — I can’t imagine how they could improve much on the ergonomics.

Aside from providing quick performance-enhancing shifts, the auto gearbox can improve fuel economy when the ECO PRO function is activated. As the driver lifts off the throttle at higher speeds, the engine temporarily disconnects from the transmission and idles, rather than unnecessarily engine braking.

The optional M steering wheel feels great both to the touch, possessing just the right amount of thickness, and during turns thanks to an upgraded electric steering setup. You actually experience feedback from the road rather than having the wheel numbly slip through your fingers, which is occasionally the case in other examples found on the market.

Rounding out the list of redesigns is an upgraded suspension. he first Porsche Boxster Spyder originally debuted for the 2011 model year and was a one-off model that paid homage to the legendary 1953 550 Spyder the entire Boxster family was derived from. It was a stunning mid-engine roadster that put a ton of emphasis on shedding weight in the name of performance. Now, here in 2016, Porsche has revived the Boxster Spyder name, keeping the lightweight mantra and tossing in enough power for it to lay claim to the ‘most powerful Boxster ever made’ title.

Boxster GTS which comes in below the Spyder in the Boxster lineup. Power is put to the ground via an only-available 6-speed manual transmission with a short throw shifter, and the 0-60 mph (100 km/h) time is set at 4.3 seconds with a top track speed of 290 km/h. The entire car weighs only an astounding 2,899 lbs. (1,315 kg) and it surely does feel that way when you’re behind the wheel. You are easily able to tackle any corner, dart in and out of traffic, and experience unparalleled handling thanks to the mid-engine design and lightweight top lowering the centre of gravity. Power is distributed to the rear wheels through a classic mechanical differential lock that works with the PTV (Porsche Torque Vectoring) system, which improves steering response and precision.

The outside of the new Spyder is very reminiscent of the original, keeping the streamliners that stretch from behind the head restraints over the long trunk and allow it to uniquely distinguish itself from the rest of the Boxster lineup. It sits on a wide set of 20-inch wheels and features a manual canvas top that can be a bit tricky to put up and down, but definitely helps it shed some weight. With all of that emphasis put on handling, it should not be forgotten that this is the most powerful Boxster ever made, which is further enOnce you enter the vehicle, you’ll find pretty much what you’ve come hanced by the car’s lightweight design, allowing it to achieve a pounds to expect from a Boxster, or any Porsche car for that matter - a driver- per horsepower rating of just 7.7 lbs. he compact SUV market is smoking hot right now, and all the manufacturers are scrambling to gain an edge. Given the pace of technology improvements, most of the new models are quantum leaps over their predecessors, as good as they may have been, and most of them are a bit larger inside and out, and therefore that much less “compact.” Such is the case with the latest Hyundai Tucson, which has vaulted from also-ran status in a competitive sense, to one of the most impressive models in this segment. I mean, really, is there a better-looking little crossover than this one?

We didn’t go anywhere off-pavement, so can’t attest to the AWD’s function in low-traction circumstances, but would expect it to be a typical “on-demand” system, with the added benefit of a “lock” function that provides added traction in the AWD system. If the TV ads are to be believed, the Tucson is ready for the Baja 1000.

At first glance, the cabin of the Tucson Limited will make you think you were in a larger SUV, like Hyundai’s Santa Fe. The product planners have gone all-in on seating, as the two supportive leather front seats are both multi-adjustable, and all seats are heated, as is the steering wheel. Pros: We were big fans of the updated looks and appreciated the true capability of this mid-size mainstay. Cons: The fuel economy we experienced may not be as good as what Toyota lists. The Verdict: If you want all of the perks of having a full-size pickup with the manoeuvrabilty of a vehicle much smaller, the Tacoma should be right at the top of your list.

NISSAN Maxima

Segment Competitors: Chevrolet Impala, Chrysler 300, Hyundai Genesis, Toyota Avalon, Lincoln MKZ, Ford Taurus, BMW 3-Series The Skinny: Dubbed a “4-door Sports Car” by Nissan, the Maxima certainly didn’t disappoint. It is packed full of all the latest technologies with tons of room for both passengers and cargo. Pros: Love the overall look of the Maxima, both inside and out. Cons: Maybe they will grow on us, but CVT transmissions aren’t our favourite. The Verdict: The Maxima does everything you would want a full size sedan to, and does it well at that. Pros: We appreciated the simple, well laid-out interior with the always easy-to-use Uconnect system. Cons: Some of us found the clutch a little tough to get used to. The Verdict: The Dart definitely has one of the meaner looks in its segment and when combined with a well-functioning interior, and a overall positive driving experience, it should be considered at or near the top of its class.

ACURA ILX A-SPEC

Segment Competitors: Buick Verano, Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta, Mazda3, Chevrolet Cruze, Dodge Dart, Ford Focus The Skinny: The ILX was introduced for the 2013 model year and is basically Acura’s luxury take on the always popular Honda Civic. Pros: We are big fans of the new powertrain including the quick-shifting dual clutch transmission. Cons: Front seat headroom could be an issue for some. A full 75-percent of the body structure of the new XF is constructed of aluminum, a move that Jaguar kicked off with the recent redesign of its venerable XJ full-size sedan. Using this advanced aluminum architecture has resulted in an overall weight reduction of 11-percent and an improved structural stiffness by 28-percent. As a result, the car feels more nimble in the handling department, a fact that is further enhanced by the stiffer body. The lighter weight also helps the car achieve better fuel economy. news. This is because the glorious 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine that used to reside there has been ditched in favour of a proven 3.0litre supercharged V6 engine, of which there will be two variants. The first produces a healthy 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, while the unit fitted to the XF S model will bump the horsepower to 380. Both engines are mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission which retains the company’s novel rotary control dial, but can also be operated using paddle controls. Plans call for a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel inline four-cylinder engine to be added to the menu in the near future, but as there still might be some reluctance by Canadian consumers to embrace the technology due to the fallout caused by the Volkswagen diesel debacle, sales might not be overly strong initially.

Driving enthusiasts may complain that Jaguar will not offer the car in rear-wheel drive form in our market, but the reality is that the majority of Canadian customers would welcome the four-season surefootedness that comes with Jaguar’s well-sorted Instinctive AllWheel Drive system. There are four trim levels available - Premium, Prestige, R-Sport, and the potent S. With each step up the ladder, the car’s equipment level gains a variety of safety, comfort, and styling additions, while the top-tier S model also gets the mild horsepower boost. After two days of driving both the R-Sport and S models in a variety of environments, I came to the conclusion that the new Jaguar XF is more refined than the outgoing car, and although it no longer has the big grunt of a blown V8 engine, it still delivered a top-notch driving experience. Acceleration is strong and linear, and the longer wheelbase and competent suspension smoothed out the ride over rough mountain roads while still allowing the car to carve its way through the twisty bits like a much smaller sports machine. Much of this dynamic handling ability can be attributed to clever engineering wizardry. All XF models can be ordered with Jaguar’s Adaptive Dynamics (standard on S, and available as a no-cost option on the other trims), a trick system which modifies the vehicle’s response to driver inputs like throttle position, braking, and steering, but also electronically controls the suspension settings to best suit road conditions and body movement. Another innovation, standard on all models, is Jaguar’s All Surface Progress Control (ASPC). ASPC is basically a low speed cruise control system which helps the car maintain traction when travelling over slippery surfaces or when faced with inclement weather conditions. Both the R-Sport and top-spec XF S demonstrated that they handle with a new level of precision, although I did notice just a hint of understeer when cornering aggressively at speed. The lightly assisted power steering was responsive to subtle corrections and response was immediate, leaving the driver with renewed confidence. The well-insulated cabin keeps road, engine and wind noise from intruding on passenger comfort, which is further enhanced by an extensive new list of luxury appointments and electronic accessories. All the luxury and comfort equipment one expects in a premium automobile is present and accounted for, including a whole host of new technology like Jaguar’s InControl touch-screen infotainment system, advanced LED lighting, premium Meridian audio, an available heads-up display, and a host of new safety integrated driving assistance features. The XF shares much of its architecture with the upcoming XE compact sport-sedan and F-Pace SUV. Together, this potent combination of cars is expected to reinvigorate the brand and help it triple its market reach in North America by 2017. If the XE and F-Pace prove to be as well-engineered and packaged as the new XF, then rival brands like BMW, Audi and Lexus had better be prepared to look in their mirrors. fEBRUARY/MARCH 2016 CARS Plus MAGAZINE 27

Globally, more than 50-percent of Range Rover’s sales are equipped with diesel engines, and that figure The Td6 engine offers improved fuel efficiency over the company’s two rises to an astounding 90-percent when you consider the UK market on its gasoline-powered supercharged engines, the 3.0-litre V6 and the 5.0own. In short, Land Rover is a company that knows what it is doing when it comes to designing, engineering and producing diesel technology. Story by Russell Purcell, photos courtesy Range Rover

L

However, until recently, there has been very little interest in introducing the technology to the North American marketplace. This is about to change, as the stalwart company is set to roll two diesel-powered models of its popular Range Rover sport utility into company showrooms for model year 2016 - the Range Rover HSE Td6 and Range Rover Sport HSE Td6. This move signals the company’s desire to offer diesel technology across the Land Rover lineup in the near future. Under the broad aluminum hood you will find a 3.0-litre Td6 turbocharged V6 diesel engine which produces 254 horsepower and a prodigious 440 lb-ft of torque. Having access to plenty of low-end grunt on demand will prove advantageous for those Range Rover owners who use their vehicles to pull a horse trailer or boat (up to 7,716 lb), as well as for those avid off-roaders who wish to do some off-tarmac exploring. The Td6 is an evolutionary engine designed in-house to provide maximum performance and optimal efficiency, but it is also refined enough to suit the wants and demands of Range Rover’s affluent clientele. The engineers responsible for the design constructed the Td6 using Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI) which offers a higher tensile strength than traditional cast iron, and better fatigue strength than an aluminum design. It’s compact in size and lighter than its gasoline counterparts, two factors that help keep the overall weight of the vehicle in check and thus improve fuel efficiency.

litre V8, and is capable of delivering an impressive combined rating of 30 miles-per-gallon (which represents a 32-percent improvement over the company’s own gasoline powered V6), and up to 35 mpg on the highway.

In an effort to ensure that emissions are kept to a minimum, every aspect of the Td6 engine has been optimized. The engine employs a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system which uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to reduce NOx emissions. The DEF is injected into the exhaust and, as the resulting mixture passes through the SCR, NOx is turned into harmless nitrogen gas. It also utilizes a Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Both Td6 models feature a well-sorted ZF-engineered, eight-speed Recirculation (EGR) system which takes gases at low pressure - after the automatic transmission. Land Rover has had tremendous success in the showroom since the Range Rover lineup was remodeled for model year 2014, and sales of both Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are at record highs. Range Rover is presently the fastest growing luxury brand in North America. With the addition of the two diesel variants to expand the catalogue of offerings, this upward trend is likely to continue as the product will appeal to an even broader segment of the consumer market.

Selecting the diesel option will up the initial purchase price of the vehicle to the engine’s turbocharger inlet. These gases then pass through an by $1500, but this extra cost is offset by substantial fuel savings; espeintercooler, which helps produce a lower peak combustion temperature cially when you consider that diesel fuel is typically less expensive than which in turn reduces the level of NOx produced. Unfortunately, diesel engines have a bad reputation in North America for generating excessive noise. This widely-held opinion has been garnered over the years due to our limited exposure to diesel-powered vehicles, the majority of which are heavy commercial trucks and poorly maintained pick-ups. In an effort to change this, the design team at Land Rover worked overtime to ensure that the company’s diesel models would deliver traditional Range Rover refinement. To reduce noise levels, the Td6 engine sits on dual-isolation engine mounts and the vehicles benefit from a speciallydesigned bulkhead that insulates the cabin from excess mechanical noise. The vehicles have also been fitted with windshields constructed using a special acoustic laminate. During our evaluation, it became obvious that these measures work exceptionally well, as there is just a hint of diesel engine clatter at around 1,500 rpm when operating at low speeds. However, you have to be looking for it, as it is so insignificant that it is drowned out by the vehicle’s radio or even just the volume of a typical conversation. The folks at Land Rover have big plans for diesel in both the United States and Canada, so they embarked on an extensive testing program which included a wide variety of terrain, climatic conditions and elevations. In fact, the Range Rover Td6 platform has run in excess of one million miles in North America prior to it being offered for sale in the market.

premium gasoline in most markets. It is also expected that the diesel variants will maintain a higher residual value over their gasoline counterparts. This latter fact should result in a lower monthly lease payment and a higher resale value for the Td6 equipped vehicles. The evolution of the Range Rover platform has spanned five decades and over that period it has established a loyal following and a solid reputation for its capabilities. With the arrival of the proven Td6 engine North American consumers will finally have the opportunity to see Range Rover at its best, and parent company Land Rover is better equipped to stave off increased competition from Europe and Japan.

CES 2016

Story and photos by Norm Ross

I

t’s January 2016, and that means another Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is upon us. Somehow, almost every year, there are issues with travel to the show and this year was no exception. Las Vegas had dense fog in the mornings, backing up all the planes and I had to wait an extra five hours before our plane could take off. Not as bad as other years at least. This year, CES declared it was the biggest and best yet, but it seemed to be more of the same from last year – virtual reality stuff, crash-avoiding cars (self-driven or by a human), drones and more drones. All the vehicle manufacturers were present with big and splashy booths, showcasing how their cars will drive themselves. More importantly, showcasing how the audio/video, navigation, and climate controls will interface with us drivers. I like how they have mock-ups to see how real humans interact with their vehicles’ systems, and hopefully they will make changes to their user interfaces from the real feedback gained at the show. Other noticeable tech at the show is sensors going into everything, especially wearables for fitness, automation and anything else you can think of. It was great to see sensors and GPS being combined between your car and phone and house. As car and truck manufacturers continue to add features to their radios, we are often unable to remove them for better sound, so it was good to see more OEM integration products than ever. These will allow the addition of amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers to improve greatly on the sound from the factory. Many of these OEM integration processors will also allow re-equalizing the frequency response and time-aligning the speakers for the ultimate in great sound. The days of just adding a line-out-converter (LOC) are long gone. Look to AudioControl, Audison, JL Audio, Rockford Fosgate, Zapco among others for these processors. Zapco showed units with built-in Bluetooth streaming from your phone, and one with a built-in HD Audio (high resolution audio) player for the best sound possible. I expect to see more solutions for OEM system upgrades in the coming years. Until then, see you, and more drones, again next year – CES 2017 is January 5-8, 2017.

History of Healey

Iconic Austin Healey of the ’50s and ’60s competed with MG TD, TF and Triumph TR2 Story and photos by Nigel Matthews

the Healey and decided that this would solve all his problems.

D

The Austin Motor Co. needed something to compete with the MG TD, TF and the Triumph TR2. It was a perfect marriage.

onald Healey made numerous trips to the U.S. and identified a market opportunity for a sports car that would fit between the Jaguar and the MG. Just prior to his creation’s debut at the 1952 London Motor Show, Leonard Lord, the chairman of the British Motor Corp., took a look at

Healey wanted to partner with a manufacturer that could turn out his design in large quantities and Lord believed this car would indeed sell. The Austin Healey is regarded as the epitome of the ’50s and ’60s British sports car. It is one of the most sought-after classic sports cars of today and the largest market for the Healey was unquestionably the U.S. In the past few years, a steady flow of rust-free cars had returned to the United Kingdom. The Austin-Healey was a sensation. It looked stunning, sounded great and performed well on the road. The total production figures from beginning to end amounted to about 70,592 cars. Donald Healey severed his ties with company and became chairman of another famous British manufacturer, Jensen Cars. The last car to bear his name was the Jensen-Healey, which aimed at the MGB and TR6 market. Unfortunately, it did not take off and production ceased in 1976, having built 10,926 units. For his “services to export,” Healey was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth in 1973. The great man died in 1988, but his memory lives on in the Healeys still being raced, driven, collected and enjoyed today.

PARTING SHOTS The worst high centre we’ve ever seen.

Well that’s kind of ironic. We only wish we knew what exactly happened here.

Probably not the best spot for a Lambo.

That’s going to be an expensive fire.

Do his tires touch the pavement at all?

Parting Shots is where we share those photos that defy classification. If you’ve seen something four-wheeled (or otherwise) that you would like to share, please send it to partingshots@rpmcanada.ca 46 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE fEBRUARY/MARCH 2016
