2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R Makes North American Debut

T

he new 2018 Mercedes-AMG GT R originally made its first appearance back in June at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but now it has been shown on North American soil for the first time in California as part of the Monterey Car Week. The car, which was shown in the exclusive AMG Green Hell Magno colour, features a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that puts out 577 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, which propels it from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The engine will be paired to a 7-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT dual-clutch transmission and power will be put to the rear wheels. Tucked almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine of the GT R is a carbon component that weighs only about 2 kilograms that automatically moves downward by about 40mm and changes the airflow, which basically sucks the car onto the road and reduces the front axle lift by about 40 kg at 250 km/h. This can be felt by the driver in the steering, allowing it to be even more precise to steer when cornering at high speeds. The car, which was tested and developed at the Nurburgring, features many other amazing performance features such as an active air management system, AMG coil-over suspension, active rear-wheel steering, and AMG traction control, just to name a few.

kilometres of range, when the all-new 2017 Bolt EV goes on sale later this year. The vehicle has a USA EPA-estimated range of 383 kilometres, which will give owners plenty of range for their daily driving needs, with plenty to spare. The production version of the Bolt EV was unveiled earlier this year and GM North America President Alan Batey was quoted as saying “The Bolt EV is a game changer for the electric car segment and it will start to become available at Chevrolet dealerships later this year. In addition to an outstanding electric range, the Bolt EV will offer plenty of cargo space, technology and the latest safety features. The new model will join the Volt and the Malibu Hybrid as the electric/hybrid offerings in the Chevrolet lineup.

Dodge to Offer New Models for Challenger and Charger for 2017 Dodge recently revealed its plans to release new models for both the Challenger and Charger for the 2017 model year. The Challenger will see T/A models added to its lineup while the Charger will add in Daytona models. The Challenger T/A models build on the legacy of the original T/A models that were built for the Sports Car Club of America’s Trans Am racing Series in 1970, and will offer three track-capable models: Challenger T/A, T/A Plus, and the T/A 392. The base T/A and T/A Plus build off of the equipment offered on the Challenger R/T model and add in performance and appearance upgrades, while the T/A 392 features the 6.4-litre HEMI V8 engine with 485 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The Charger Daytona models were originally created in 1969 as a purpose-built production run for NASCAR, and the new models for 2017 build on that success. The Daytona models will be offered in a base model, which builds on the Charger R/T model, and the Daytona 392 model. Both models feature unique looks and performance upgrades that will help it stand out from the regular Charger models. In addition, the Challenger T/A and Charger Daytona models see all-new and limited production colour options called Green Go and revised Yellow Jacket.

Kia Unveils All-New Fourth Generation Rio Kia has recently revealed the all-new, fourth-generation Rio at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. It features a progressive new exterior and interior design, and is defined by straight lines and smooth surfacing, all of which contribute to giving the Rio a confident new look. The front of the Rio features Kia’s tiger-nose grille that is now thinner in height and wider across the front of the vehicle, while the integrated bi-function projection headlamps are also thinner and more sculpted than the outgoing model. The rear part of the new Rio is now more upright and has rear taillights that will feature a new arrowshaped LED light signature. Inside of the updated model is where a modern new cabin design can be found that gives a wider appearance which increases the sense of space for occupants. The dashboard is now angled toward the driver and at the centre of it is a new infotainment system, a ‘floating’ HMI (human-machine interface) with a high-res touchscreen. The production for the new Rio will start towards the end of 2016.

Danny Thompson Sets New Land Speed Record on Mickey Thompson Tires Recently, during Speed Week at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Danny Thompson, who is the son of the legendary Mickey Thompson, set a new land speed record for a piston-powered vehicle in the Challenger 2 streamliner on Mickey Thompson Bonneville LSR tires. Thompson set a new AA/FS record with an incredible speed of 411.191 mph (661.748 km/h) that was backed up with a run of 402.348 mph, and finished with an official average of 406.769 mph, which is a significant margin over the previous record of 392.503 mph. The Mickey Thompson Bonneville LSR tires that were used are a prototype nylon-constructed tire with banded steel and just 1/32-inch of tread rubber, weighing in at 13 lbs. The record comes 56 years after Danny’s father Mickey became the first American to exceed 400 mph on the salt. On the 50th anniversary of that run, Danny removed the Challenger 2 from storage and began the difficult process of restoring the streamliner, which took him several years.

the next evolution of Cadillac design as it previews the design and technical ideas driving the next phase of the company’s ongoing expansion. The Escala, which is Spanish for scale, is a concept for a larger, more elite and expressive companion to the recently launched CT6 which is the brand’s new range-topping sedan. It is designed to be a driver’s car and a flagship sedan and features an expansive lift-back design emphasizing the car’s considerable scale and versatility, and measures at 210.5 inches in overall length, which is six inches longer than the current CT6. The Escala features a new and evolved face of Cadillac design that will be appearing on production models soon. Inside of the concept are an array of three curved OLED screens that are layered in front of the driver with the back sides of them wrapped in leather and embossed with the Cadillac script. Under the hood of the Escala is a new 4.2-litre twin-turbo V8 engine which is a prototype of a new system in development for future Cadillac models.

and rugged exterior styling. The ride height for the Alltrack has been increased 0.6-inches and the redesigned bumper, underbody guard and a matte-aluminum low-profile radiator grille that extends into the headlights greatly increase the rugged look. Additional exterior changes from the Sportwagen include 17-inch aluminum-alloy (18-inch Canyon on the SEL model) and a new rear bumper that also boasts silver underbody protection. Inside of the Alltrack is the same spacious interior found in the SportWagen but with a few notable differences meant to help it stand out. V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces are standard equipment across the line as are heatable front seats. Under the Alltrack’s hood is the 1.8-litre TSI engine that sees output rated at 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, which begins at just 1,600 rpm. The engine is paired with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch manumatic transmission, but a six-speed manual transmission will be available in early 2017.

All-New 2017 Mazda6 Makes Global Debut Mazda Canada recently introduced the 2017 Mazda6, which sees premium refinements and updates in a few areas to help it remain as one of the more popular midsize sedans. The Mazda6 will received the all-new G-Vectoring Control (GVC) which is the first in a series of new SKYACTIV-Vehicle Dynamics technologies that provide integrated control of the engine, transmission, chassis and body. The GVC system allows drivers to maintain better control of their vehicles which has been designed to deduce the need for steering corrections, and allows the 6 to continue to be regarded as one of the best-handling vehicles in its segment. Also new for 2017 is greatly enhanced sound insulation which was achieved by using improved door seals, tighter tolerance between panels, thicker front glass, and sound insulation materials used on the underbody, rear console, headliner and doors. The entry-level Mazda6 GX now comes with a standard wide-angle rearview camera, the mid-level GS gains a standard navigation system, and the top of the line GT models get a new full-colour Active Driving heads-up display, just

to name a few features. All models are powered by a 184-horsepower, 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G engine paired to either an automatic or manual transmission.

Audi Updates A3 Model Line Audi has decided to refresh the entire A3 model lineup for the 2017 model year with improvements that include a redesigned exterior and an expanded suite of driver assistance systems and increased technology offerings. All models will received a new front fascia for 2017 that includes a wider Singleframe grille and a new headlight design that give the models a sportier and more aggressive appearance. Also adding to the aggressive appearance is new lower front bumper styling and rear bumper with diffuser insert design and new wheel designs such as the 18-inch 5-arm dynamic design wheels that are exclusive to the S3 model. Inside, the A3 model line has also been updated with available updated MMI touch with handwriting-recognition technology that includes a simplified function-key layout with two touch-keys for horizontal menu control logic. 2017 Audi S3

When in Ludicrous mode, Tesla claims the Model S P100D will go from 0-60 mph in an astonishing 2.5 seconds, which would make it the current fastest accelerating production car, as the LaFerrari and Porsche 918 are no longer made brand new. The larger battery pack will also be available on the Model X which will make the world’s quickest SUV even faster with a 0-60 mph time of just 2.9 seconds in Ludicrous mode and a range of 465 km (289 miles). This is especially impressive if you consider the fact that both vehicles will be able to reach speed that quickly while still having the capacity to carry around tons of passengers and cargo. ROAD TEST: 2017 PORSCHE 911 CARRERA 4S

Everyday Supercar

Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

W

hen is a turbocharged Porsche 911 not called a Porsche 911 Turbo? For four decades, the 911 Turbo has been the top-of-the-line for Porsche’s iconic car. But what is this, then? A regular 911 Carrera with twin turbochargers? How can that be? Well, believe it – all 991.2 (second version of the latest generation) Carreras, in basic and “S” trim, are now turbocharged. The new engines, thankfully still with six cylinders, are smaller, 3.0 litres versus the normally aspirated 3.4 and 3.8 units from before, but generate more power and torque.

The Carrera 4S we drove has 420 hp (versus 400 before) and 368 lb-ft of torque (325 before). These are significant gains, but do they come with any compromise in the expected 911 driving experience? Not at all. Certainly, by the numbers, the increase in power and especially torque has made for an even quicker 911, with Porsche claiming sub-4 second times to 100 km/h, 11-second quarter miles at 120 mph, and a top end north of 180 mph, for what that is worth. The key change is that maximum torque, previously at 5,600 rpm, now comes in as low as 1,700 rpm, thanks to the turbos. In easy driving around town, or cruising up a hill on rural highways at 100 km/h, it is something to see the gear indicator say “7” and the engine being happy about it. With turbos, one might expect some hesitation or lag at lower rpms, but there was none that we noticed. They are small and well-managed electronically with a new anti-lag system, and all you notice is an almost imperceptible low whistle sound that all turbos emit. We were not surprised, or disappointed, to see that our tester had the 7-speed PDK twin-clutch manumatic transmission on board. We’ve come to really enjoy the quick shifting, up or down, of this unit, and the ease of driving in urban traffic. At least a fullmanual box is still available for the true purists, but the PDK is quicker in all measurable acceleration, and even more so with the launch control that is part of the Sport Chrono package. If that is not enough, PDK

to create a Porsche that is unique. We think that many buyers will choose the equipment that made our tester into perhaps the most high-performance Carrera you can get. Primary among those, for significance and price ($7,780) is the Sport Package (as if the regular car is not-so-sporty) that includes the aforementioned Sport Chrono package, sport mirrors, sport steering wheel (with a new control wheel under the right thumb to select driving mode), and sport exhaust (with two modes, both with that marvellous raspy sound with wastegate pops and gurgles added in), and the most important feature for handling, Rear Axle Steering. At slow speeds, it makes the car turn in quicker, and at higher speeds, it indelivers almost ten percent better fuel efficiency in the city, with equal highway efficiency. Add that to the estimated 12-percent improvement just from the new engine alone, and you get a reasonable 8.5L/100 km at 110 km/h. The 911’s all-wheel drive system is really an on-demand one, primarily a rear-drive set-up that directs power to the front when traction is needed. Obviously, loose surfaces is one such time, but so is exiting a slower corner with heavy throttle. It is all transparent, of course, but in the end, the added weight is worth having great traction. So, those are the basic specifications of the 911 C4S, but from there, the extensive (and expensive) options list can be used

creases stability. While we didn’t have a non-rear steer 911 to try for comparison, we can say that one so equipped handles on the proverbial rails. At every part of a turn, the 911 is composed, balanced and communicative, in a way that drivers of some other so-called performance cars just can’t imagine. The other option, a bit more of a bargain at $1,020, is the PASM Sport Suspension, which lowers the car 20 mm (nearly an inch). Combine that with the gorgeous $2,710 20-inch RS Spyder (the prototype race car from several years ago) wheels, and you have just a perfect stance, very reminiscent of another famous Porsche race car, the 911 GT1 from Le Mans, 20 years ago. On the other hand, with the seat only a few inches off the ground, getting in and out of the car is not for those who aren’t limber. Nor does the lowered ride height help while negotiating the imperfections of urban roadways, such as speed bumps, driveways, etc. A raising system for the front suspension is available to help gain back some clearance, and we wish our tester had had it. In any case, the 991.2 is little different from the 2016 model, just enough so that the owner will clearly be seen to have the latest version. The headlamps and taillights are revised, the rear getting a new light strip between the lamps. The rear deck lid and louvres are new, the latter now with slots that align ‘north-south.’ The infotainment interface is all-new and much improved. Oh, and the door handles are new. Some Porsche fans would call that a significant change. Obvi14 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2016

ously, all this pales in comparison to the new engine, the biggest change since Porsche started to run water through them. But the essence of the 911 remains the same. It is a reliable, allweather everyday supercar, with a heritage that is not exceeded in the high-end market place. The Carrera 4S starts at $126K, and one equipped as ours was will set you back some $152K. For most people, that is a lot, but it is half or less what you will pay for an Italian or British exotic. On that level, and for those who know good value, it is a bargain. Just don’t call it a Turbo.

FIRST DRIVE: 2017 GMC ACADIA

Slimming Down

Measuring in at 4,917 millimetres in length, 1,916 width and 1,745 height with the roof rails, it’s shorter and narrower than before — by 184 mm and 87 mm to be exact — making it nimbler, especially in an urban setting like the fairly tight airport parking area we initially departed from. As I mentioned at the beginning, the Acadia has lost a significant chunk of mass, due to the implementation of additional high-strength steel. “It’s lighter weight, produces better fuel economy, is more manoeuvrable, garage-able and more urban friendly for smaller driveways, smaller garages and smaller roads,” affirms Alger.

T

he GMC Acadia has undergone a lot of changes entering its second generation. Case in point: the crossover has dropped a weight class, losing 700 pounds in the process, and is now competing in the mid-size segment as opposed to the previous full-size. The vehicle also gets a different set of looks, more safety features and two brand-new powertrains.

The overall footprint of the crossover may have shrunk, but interior room hasn’t been affected, meaning it caters to “outdoor enthusiasts who want more space for stuff than people,” he says. When all the rear seats are folded, there is 2,237 litres of cargo capacity ready for use. There’s even a nifty pull-out storage drawer behind the centre console to stash mobile devices or anything else you want hidden from prying eyes. That’s not to say the Acadia can’t haul passengers when the occasion calls for it. Up to seven-passenger seating remains an option, and the split-folding second row can tilt and slide forward on both sides providing quick and easy access to the third row. A neat industry-first function is the rear seat alert. Once each trip, if the rear door(s) are opened either 10 minutes before the vehicle is started or during, the system can audibly and visually remind the driver to check the back before leaving.

GMC invited us on a drive from Richmond to Whistler and back to get GMC has introduced two new engines to the lineup: a 2.5-litre foura sense of how much has changed for the Acadia in just one model cylinder Ecotec mill “designed for the person who really wants fuel year. The route wasn’t chosen arbitrarily, however, as venturing from economy,” and a 3.6-litre V6 “for people looking for performance and towing capability,” says Alger, adding fuel economy is still there, but a little lower down the priority list. The former produces 194 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque, standard on the base SLE, and the latter 310 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque found on the SLT, All Terrain and Denali. I only had the opportunity to drive the six-cylinder and passing on the highway was a joy with power instantly coming on tap with a push of the throttle. The engine features cylinder deactivation, so during cruising less gas is consumed — we hovered between 12 and 14 L/100 km in mixed city and highway conditions. The four-cylinder is reported to yield approximately 10.2 L/100 km in a similar environment. We didn’t get to test towing, but the V6 is rated with a 4,000-pound towing capacity. Hyundai Launches New Premium Genesis Brand

The Genesis name should sound familiar as Hyundai has been selling two models under that name for the better part of a decade - a sporty uch like its Japanese rivals Toyota and Nissan, Korean auto coupe and a luxurious five-passenger sedan, but production of these giant Hyundai has set its sights on the premium segment of the cars will soon come to an end, and the nameplate will no longer be automotive marketplace in an effort to give the company even more used under the Hyundai banner. influence and enhance its prestige. Hyundai calls this design language “Athletic Elegance.” The car is large in stature, and in fact, the G90 is longer than a Mercedes-Benz S-Class by 125 millimetres. However, the big sedan doesn’t feel bulky or awkward from behind the wheel, and the level of fit-and-finish is so exceptional, that one could argue that the G90 is setting a new standard for this segment. The interior is about the same you’d find in any other M vehicle, albeit a little more scaled down in accordance with the model’s lower position in the pecking order. For example, there is loads of a carbon-fibrewrap material covering various trim pieces rather than the real deal you might find in, say, an M6. No head-up display, either. As expected, there’s not a whole lot of cabin space. Surprisingly, though, the rear seats are actually usable (read: for adults and not exclusively small children). Once you fire up the motor, you won’t remember, or care, how the inside looks. Side note: a friend of mine who owns an M4 came along for a ride and pointed out a neat detail of how the start button is angled towards the driver, which reinforces the driver-focused nature of the car. 22 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2016

While I didn’t get a chance to test this feature, there’s a launch control function designed to give the best possible acceleration from a standstill. When activated, the computer determines ideal engine speed and primes both clutches so maximum traction is delivered off the line, with minimum wheelspin, as soon as the throttle is engaged. Once moving, all upshifts are timed and executed at optimal revs, yielding a 0-to-100 km/h time of 4.3 seconds as opposed to 4.5 when using the six-speed. BMW has given the M2 gas-saving technology like Auto Start Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration and intelligent management of select components, allowing them to draw power only when required. TEST FLEET New for 2016: The Mazda MX-5 is completely redesigned for 2016 and is 200 lbs. lighter than the outgoing model despite gaining modern new equipment.

MAZDA MX-5 GS

Segment Competitors: Fiat 124 Spider, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, Hyundai Genesis Coupe The Skinny: The MX-5 may be new for 2016 but it still carries on the same mantra as the original model did when it was introduced back in 1989 which is a 2-seat roadster that is incredibly fun, lightweight, and simple. The 2016 model is no different and truly was a blast. Pros: Something we all loved was the short throw shifter. Cons: Any large or tall person will have a tough time finding a comfortable driving position. The Verdict: We see no reason why the MX-5 won’t continue to be one of the most fun driving experiences you can have and a reasonable cost certainly helps.

KIA SPORTAGE EX

New for 2017: The Kia Sportage has been completely redesigned for the 2017 model year and now features a bold new look, more room in the back seat, and improved technology features. Segment Competitors: Mazda CX-5, Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan Rogue, Chevrolet Equinox, Mitsubishi RVR The Skinny: The small crossover SUV segment is one of the most populated segments in the industry with just about every manufacturer offering an example, which makes it incredibly tough to differentiate yourself from the rest. We believe Kia has done a good job of doing that by giving the Sportage a sharp new look, tons of great standard features, and very good drivability.

Pros: Very comfortable ride in highway situations. Cons: The non-turbocharged models feel somewhat lacking in power. The Verdict: The Sportage stands out more than ever in its ever-crowded segment with a quirky yet bold new look, great amenity features, and fun-to-drive nature.

AUDI A3 e-TRON

Segment Competitors: Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac ELR, Ford C-Max, Toyota Prius V, Lexus CT, Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid, Mercedes C350 Plug-in Hybrid The Skinny: The Audi A3 e-tron gives you everything you’d expect out of a typical Audi but adds in the efficiency of a plugin hybrid. The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and dual clutch transmission provide plenty of fun factor, while the electric motor allows you to either travel 26 km on all-electric power or use it in combination with the hybrid mode. Pros: Despite boasting hybrid technology that isn’t all that familiar to Audi fans, the A3 was still pretty fun to drive. Cons: The all-electric range is a tad underwhelming. The Verdict: The A3 e-tron is an ideal solution for those in the market for an Audi, but who want a little more efficiency without sacrificing much performance 24 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2016

FORD ESCAPE TITANIUM

New for 2017: The Escape received a mid-cycle refresh for 2017 that includes a revised exterior with a new front grille, a modified 2.0L EcoBoost engine and the integration of the Sync 3 system. Segment Competitors: Mazda CX-5, Kia Sportage, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Cherokee, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan Rogue, Chevrolet Equinox, Mitsubishi RVR The Skinny: The Escape is part of a very crowded segment and this 2017 version continues to build on the success it has enjoyed over the years. It features a classy and sophisticated appearance and is packed full of the latest and greatest technology features, all while providing a very smooth ride.

Solid fabric top and plenty of technology stuffed into a surprisingly roomy small package.

Pros: The Sync 3 system is a huge upgrade over the previous version. Cons: The available hands-free power liftgate is sometimes not the easiest to activate. The Verdict: The compact crossover SUV segment has seen a lot of new competition over the years and while some may very well be very capable, if you’re looking for a sure thing, look no further than the Ford Escape.

MINI COOPER S CONVERTIBLE

Segment Competitors: Fiat 500 Convertible, Mazda MX-5, VW Beetle Convertible. The Skinny: The Mini finds itself in a segment with only a few competitors. The only true competitor is the MX-5 and the Mini adds a couple of extra seats. Pros: Surprising how much room there is even with the top up. Improved soft top that opens halfway sort of like a sunroof and has a rain warning to let you know it’s time to close up. Cons: Struggle to see the traffic light with the low roofline. Although secure, the trunk is a bit small and hard to access. The Verdict: The best in its small class of competitors. Loaded with features and primed for the sun; it doesn’t disappoint all of the Mini fans in the audience. Maybe not the best performance, but overall great style.

CADILLAC XT5

New for 2017: Redesigned and with much improvement over the previous XTS. Segment Competitors: Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Infiniti Q50, Jaguar F-Pace, Land Rover Discovery Sport, Lexus RX, Lincoln MKX, Mercedes GLC-Class, Porsche Macan, Volvo XC60, Volvo XC70 The Skinny: The Cadillac crossover is much improved, but still in tough in a very competitive category. Quick, but not as quick as Q5 or X3. Pros: Wonderful styling with a very clean interior design and strong front end that says Cadillac. Real wood and brushed metal complement the suede and leather. Rear seats that slide forward and back to give you a little extra legroom is a nice touch.

Price: . ............................................................................. $75,235 Engine: . .............................................................. 3.6L DI VVT V6 Trans: .............................................................8-Speed Automatic Power: ......................................................... 310 hp @ 6600 rpm Torque: . ..................................................... 271 lb-ft @ 5000 rpm Curb Weight: . ................................................4,356 lb / 1,975 kg Fuel Consumption: (L/100km – City/Hwy) . ................ 12.9 / 8.6

Cons: Great power from the 310-hp V6, but the 8-speed transmission struggles to shift smoothly under harder driving. The electronic shifter is a challenge to get accustomed to. The Verdict: A dramatic improvement over the predecessor XTS. Easy to use infotainment system with the Cadillac goods like CarPlay and WiFi. Certainly not the best in the category, but it does have appeal to those liking bold Cadillac style. Complementing the exterior is a wonderfully simple and elegant interior design. The Dune is a special-edition Beetle that has been designed to serve as a reminder to folks that the iconic little runabout used to be a favourite with imaginative owners who sought to give their cars a little extra personality. Early Beetles provided a solid foundation for the mechanically inclined to create their own rolling masterpieces, many of which took on a “Baja” theme evoking the look of off-road racers, and reflected the carefree beach culture lifestyle. To accomplish this, the all-new Beetle Dune features extended fenders, unique front and rear fascias, and a wider track. All of this new attitude is suspended on oversized 18-inch signature Canyon alloy wheels that give the car 0.4 inches of extra ground clearance over that of other Beetle variants. The end result is the car has the aggressive all-wheel drive look of a crossover, but remains a front-wheel drive vehicle. Many, including myself, will feel that this is unfortunate, as VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system is well sorted and would really help make this car truly special. However, I suspect that the decision was made to retain a two-wheel drive platform to keep costs down and reduce maintenance.

The interior is attractive, and with many of the panels painted to match the car’s exterior, there is a retro feel that works to make it very appealing to the eye. Supportive, manually-adjustable leather /leatherette bucket seats with contrasting Curry stitching greet the driver and front passenger, while the tidy rear compartment features two seats best suited for nimble smaller adults and children. All the car’s controls fall readily to both hand and eye, and simplicity is the recipe for success in this department, leaving the dash and console uncluttered and very functional. Our car was fitted with the optional technology package which includes Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Traffic Alert, satellite navigation, and the Discover Media radio and Fender Premium Audio System. This is a $1,570 upgrade that seems like a bargain when compared to similar offerings in the same segment. Visibility isn’t great rearward, but there is a backup camera concealed within the rear VW badge that swings into action as soon as reverse gear is engaged, and the dash-mounted monitor is well-placed up high on the centre stack. Excellent power-operated mirrors and bumpermounted proximity sensors (front and rear) will help take most of the stress out of manoeuvring the Dune in confined spaces.

The car’s styling is bold enough to give it plenty of curb appeal, and our tester attracted lots of attention due to its concept-worthy Sandstorm Other standard equipment includes upmarket niceties such as BiYellow metallic paint. Sport appearance upgrades include larger air intakes, a black mesh grille, 19-inch rims and a rear deck spoiler. Oversized quad exhaust tips emit a healthy bark with each blip of the throttle, especially when the car is operated in sport mode. The Fusion’s exterior and interior continue to evolve for all trim levels, and the latest updates help give the car’s distinctive front end a more aggressive look, while new lighting (LED headlights and signature lights) further enhance the Fusion’s curb appeal.

The Golf R starts at a price of $39,995 with our tester coming in at $43,410, and while you’d be tempted to say that is far too much for a hatchback Volkswagen, I’d caution that there are many things to consider. Firstly, the 5-door R offers the same practicality as any model in the Golf’s lineup and can even produce a smooth, sophisticated ride when using Eco or Comfort modes. Secondly, when you look at other cars of a similar ilk with this level of performance (say the BMW M2, Audi S3 and Ford Focus RS), it is priced mostly below other offerings, so it can actually be looked at as a bargain. auto journalists were invited to take part. For some of us, it was the first chance to get behind the wheel of the two new models, kind of a sneak peak, if you will. They are both very important to the future of the brand, as they represent its entry into two of the world’s most popular automotive segments, the compact sport sedan (XE) and mid-size crossover (F-Pace). That our drives consisted of some 20-second forays through cones on a big patch of tarmac was perhaps not ideal, but we now know how nimble these cars are, at least. And of course, the invited guests got to drive the cars in a manner they seldom would on the street. As a bonus for everyone, a few of the cars available were the delectable F-Type Coupe powered by a supercharged V8, which added a different factor to negotiating the cones – tire-spinning power!

The Jaguar Experience Showing Off New Models and Training Technology

There was an aspect of this program that added a new and exciting dimension to it, and that was the “Smart Cone Challenge,” in which nine gates are set up on a patch of tarmac, each with green and blue lights on top of the cones which mark the gates. The task is to be driving your XE through the active gate with the green lights illuminated, while simultaneously looking for the next gate which has blue lights marking it. You never know which gate is going to light up next. The choice of gates is entirely random and done automatically, and the challenge is to smoothly drive through the green gate, while at the same time lining up your car properly for the blue gate, which could be totally behind the car and 100 feet away. Yes, you need eyes in the back of your head, as the saying goes. The car and its movement are completely

here is almost no end to the various methods used by the world’s auto manufacturers to get their products description and exposure. As journalists, we well know they will put us in the seats of their vehicles anywhere in the world, if it gets them coverage in popular media. But more and more, the manufacturers are also wanting to put their customers, or those they feel might someday be a customer, in the seats of their vehicles for driving opportunities ranging from going down an urban street (like a dealer test drive) to exercises a bit more unusual to most average motorists. The latter was the case at the recent Jaguar Experience event near Vancouver, one of several in Canada this year in support of the launch of the new XE and F-Pace models, and just a small part of the worldwide “Art of Performance” program. While primarily an event for customers, we monitored by GPS and wi-fi, and the driver is scored on distance, time, and accuracy. Once the two-minute exercise is complete, a score report is generated, and through social media, compared with everyone in the group that day, and theoretically, everyone in the world who has driven in the “Smart Cone Challenge.” It was great fun, of course, but it also has greater implications as an important tool for driver training, and we hope to see more of this technology that Jaguar developed for its program. To unwind from all the driving, we were also given rides in various Range Rovers over the “mechanical off-road” apparatus set up at the event. To nobody’s surprise, these mountain goats on wheels had no problems climbing or descending these obstacles. It was a fun half-day of driving at the Jaguar Experience, and judging by all the smiles from the customers, one which was enjoyed greatly by them as well. 34 CARS PLUS MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2016

he 7th Annual Luxury & Supercar Weekend was held September 10-11 at Van Dusen Gardens in Vancouver, showcasing many exotic and classic cars, with special recognition for the 100th year of BMW and 80th year of Morgan.

BEST OF SHOW: GARRY PETERS: FERRARI 250 GT PININFARINA CABRIOLET S-II

Exotic cars filled a large portion of the gardens, led by the Canadian debut of the Bugatti Chiron, straight from Monterey, CA. Yours for $3.2 million Canadian. We’ve all seen the glowing reviews of the Singer Porsche, and now we have seen two of them in the flesh. Essentially, they are old 911s with modern running gear and interiors, and we’d sure like to drive one of those. classics back to life, and the show had a special display of several of them, to honour his accomplishments. The Best of Show award went to Garry Peters’ stunning 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet by Pininfarina, which was also displayed with an amazing collection of all the original brochures, manuals and tools that came with the car. For the first time at the Show, Adesa was on hand to auction off a number of exotic vehicles. One of them was the right to purchase the first Electra Meccanica SOLO electric urban car, to be produced soon, right here in Vancouver. The Show was even the site of a Canadian new car debut, as the classy Audi A5 Coupe was revealed. Two other new cars seen for the first time locally were the Acura NSX supercar and the Bentley Bentayga SUV. These are just a few of the highlights of Luxury & Supercar Weekend, which has become one of the top such shows in the country each year.

vices we can provide as well,” says Fields, prefacing a huge announcement. “We believe that the next decade is going to be defined by the automation of the automobile. In fact, we see autonomous vehicles having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did more than 100 years ago. And that’s why we recently announced our intent to have a high volume, fully autonomous vehicle in commercial operation by 2021, in a ride hailing or ride sharing service,” he says. Think Uber, minus the driver. The so-called “level 4” cars, ones capable of 100-percent autopilot where the passenger never has to be prepared to take control, will also be devoid of traditional input devices like a steering wheel or gas/brake pedals.

Further with Ford

A five-year goal may seem ambitious, and Fields says in order to expedite development, they have enlisted the assistance of several start-ups, as well as doubling the workforce at the Palo Alto-based Research and Innovation Centre over the next 15 months. The initial launch is planned for densely populated urban centres, where transportation solutions are needed the most.
