A Shop Truck With a Twist

Speedtech’s 1968 Chevrolet C10 is more than just an everyday shop truck Story and photos by Ben Meissner

S

hop trucks have been around since like, forever. There was a time when their main purpose was to go chase or deliver parts and maybe pick up lunch for the crew. At some point, someone slapped a leftover set of billet wheels on their beater shop truck and a whole new love for these workhorses began.

Now we see them everywhere, from those still enlisted in daily shop duty, to dropped on the ground with a crowd of cameras firing off at SEMA booths. While admittedly cool, most of these shop trucks seem to pop from all-too-similar molds, wearing either mother nature’s handiwork or a good paint guy’s fabricated patina and the ultra-common super-low air bag stance. With GoodGuys and similar events encouraging true performance, word on the street is now often becoming, “Sure it’s low, but how well does it drive, handle and stop?” Having produced a number of award-winning performance suspension parts and multi-purpose Pro Touring car builds, the owner of Speedtech Performance, Blake Foster, decided it was time to build his own version of a shop truck, something with just a little twist from the norm. After a barn find beater 1968 C10 was bought and delivered to the Speedtech rod shop, it was clear that not much more than the title was salvageable. A game plan with a few key “must haves” was put in motion including, 1. Speedtech’s famous subtle custom body mods, 2. a modernized interior with all the amenities, 3. a comfortable ride for street cruises, and most of all, 4. in true Pro Touring fashion the truck had to be right at home playing with the well-prepped muscle cars on the autocross and road course. Scrapping every original part but the tailgate and empty cab shell, Classic Industries sup-

plied the rest of the C10’s new sheet metal. During the body’s reassembly, every panel on the truck was reworked with custom touches to meet Blake’s vision for go-to-show quality. The list included a smoothed Marquez front bumper hovering over a functional air dam/splitter, stock replacement grille trim with custom mesh inserts, and body-colour bezels surrounding diamondcut headlights with integrated turn signals. For an updated look, the hood centre was recessed, drip rails shaved, front and rear glass flushmounted, and quarter vent windows deleted. Speedtech logo-stamped fenders shaved from emblems and marker lights rise above the functional ground effects that help the truck stick to the road on high-speed excursions. In the engine bay, the firewall was smoothed and custom fender wells formed. Hidden boxes in the fender wells conceal the engine computer and an enclosed air cleaner with ram-air opening behind the grill. Out back, a custom roll pan and mildly Frenched LED taillights wrap up the custom touches. Wanting the truck to remain fully functional, Foster raised the bed floor and the 4-in. widened wheel tubs to clear the sooncoming raised frame rails. Finishing up the bed is a flush-mount pop-up fuel cap in the left bed rail, and a spray-on liner keeps it all protected. The mile-deep black hue was painted in-house and the white portion of the truck was handled by 3M vinyl wrap, providing protection from highspeed road debris and the occasional rogue autocross cone. While body work was shaping up in the rod shop, Speedtech’s engineering team wrapped up R&D on a new suspension design specifically intended to outperform anything else available.

When asked why, he said, “We used our Torque Arm for the C10 because it provides incredible handling, avoids the bind inherent in leaf springs and 4-links, rides comfortably and is clean, simple, and easy to install. It just makes sense.” Helping the Torque Arm do the job are Ridetech adjustable coilovers, a billet panhard bar, Speedtech Articulink trailing arms, and a splined sway bar. Both up front and on the Dutchman-prepped 9-in. Ford rear axle, Baer brakes provide some serious stopping power. Speedtech signature-series billet six-piston calipers grab hard on 14-in. slotted rotors. Completing the chassis is a Jekyll and Hyde team of wheels and tires; for the street, the C10 rolls on smooth-riding 295/30x19 and 345/30x20 Michelin Pilot Super Sports wrapping 19x10 and 20x12 Forgeline wheels. For handling 150 mph+ road course blasts and tight high-speed autoBlake challenged the crew, “This new street suspension is designed to also lead the pack on track day. If we can prove it works by keeping pace with fully built Pro Touring cars in our wheelbase-challenged, nearly 4,000 lb. honest street driver pickup, it’ll clean house when fitted in Camaros, Novas, and Chevelles.” The new “ExtReme” suspension clip got fitted into a pair of CAD-designed, laser-cut and CNC-formed, internally gusseted and jig-welded C10 frame rails. Extra highclearance, geometry-enhanced tubular control arms support ExtReme forged aluminum tall spindles and custom valved Ridetech adjustable coilovers. A splined sway bar and quick-ratio power rack-and-pinion steering complete the fully tuneable front suspension. Out back, Foster took another turn, equipping the chassis with Speedtech’s successful Torque Arm long arm 3-link style system rather than the typical air-suspended 4-link.

stainless headers, Speedtech road race oil pan, remote oil filter and cooler, Drive Junky pulley system, custom coil covers and a polished fresh air intake. All this power is channelled through a specially-built Hughes 4L65E automatic. This complete combination of power and suspension helps this unique shop truck score big across the board. It’s got the cool slammed stance, smoothed body lines, comfortable street driving and full race car handling when it’s time to get the game on. In its first season, the Speedtech C10 dominated autocross truck classes, and throughout the season placed high amongst the faster cars in attendance. After a season of hard flogging and proving what they set out to, the C10 has been retired back to mild-mannered, street driven shop duty to make way for racing Speedtech’s ExtReme muscle-car builds ...at least until the next Sunday cruise through the twisty red rock canyon roads of southern Utah. Blake continues, “I needed it to be obvious this was a street truck that performs like a racer rather than a race truck that looks like a streeter.” To help master that goal, the interior was upgraded with Cipher seats, custom leather-wrapped head liner and door panels, and power windows and locks installed. Surrounding an Ididit steering column are custom-milled billet aluminum dash bezels encasing the stereo, Vintage Air a/c and heater controls and custom Speedhut gauges. The leather upholstered centre console hides a single 12-in. woofer and integrates several components from a late model GMC console, and finally a billet B&M shifter. The Speedtech race team wanted plenty of super reliable, pump gas power fitted under the hood, and Texas Speed & Performance answered the call with a 560-hp LS3 upgraded with Speedtech

Beep Beep! Dennis Hupka’s 1969 Plymouth Roadrunner

Story and photos by Cam Hutchins

D

Offered only as a “Coupe” with a narrow “B” pillar and push-out hinged rear windows, the Roadrunner was basically a race car sold for the street. It was marketed and appealed to the young hot rodder ready to race and raise havoc on the streets. Midway through the first year, the “decor” package arrived with a pillarless “Hardtop” added to the base “Coupe,” allowing carpets and a new, more precise Hurst shifter along with some more chrome accents.

uring the fabled “Muscle Car” era, Plymouth introduced the Roadrunner as a performance package on the Belvedere in 1968, offering only the 383 cu. in. engine with 335 hp, or the 426 cu. in. Hemi with 425 hp for an extra $714. Anything related to “Go” was beefed up and anything else was eliminated. No carpets were available at first with only rubber floor liners, a plain rubber boot around the floor-mounted Although not quite fitting the target demographic for this car, Dennis 4-speed, and a bench seat as the only seating option. Hupka, during Easter of 1968, traded his 1964 Corvette coupe for one of The only bit of frivolity was the Roadrunner “Beep Beep” horn from these upgraded models. He picked a red 1968 Roadrunner coupe with the popular Warner Brothers Cartoon. Chrysler paid for the use of the the 383 and 4-speed from Johnston Motors in Vancouver. At the time, Johnston Motors had a separate showroom just for the muscle cars and even held the John Petrie Chrysler Supercar Clinic to help customers learn how to get the most out of their Mopars. This was similar to the clinics put on by supercar clinics like Dick Landy, Sox & Martin and Herb McCandless in the U.S. at Plymouth and Dodge Dealers. Hupka attended one of these clinics and still has some of the promotional materials and stickers they handed out. He sold the car after three years and bought a 1968 435-horse Corvette, then back to a Mopar with a 1970 Challenger 340 4-speed. When transferred to Ottawa, he drove it back East and through the winter. Once he started a family, the lure of the Toyota Corona Station Wagon proved to be too much, and the Challenger got sold. Fast forward to 1997, when Hupka saw a 1969 Roadrunner on a trailer in a yard in Chilliwack. The owner assured Hupka it was an easy restoration that he was going to do himself one day. Hupka had recently bought and sold two Roadrunners and was hoping this car would be Cartoon Likeness and the use of the “Beep Beep” sound. Additionally, his fourth, so Hupka left a business card. One year later, he was called the Road Runner was identified by a cartoon decal on each door and with the news that the Roadrunner had to go to pay for an engine rebuild one on the trunk lid. For the buyer wanting more, the GTX was based on a flatdeck truck. The rebuild was going to cost $3,500, so Hupka cut a cheque for $3,500 and took the Roadrunner home. on the Sport Satellite with its more luxurious trim levels. 22 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017

good news...a virtually rust-free body laid under the ugly bright yellow paint. Keay did some minor body work to one of the inner fenders. Hupka took the car home and completely dismantled it. He started to use a wire wheel on a grinder to strip the entire rust-free floorboards of paint. As time marched on, Hupka’s wife informed him that he only had one year before retirement, so he had better get help finishing off the Roadrunner. The car was completely dismantled and the shell went back to Keay’s for a total sandblasting, and all body imperfections were fixed and a fresh coat of Sunfire yellow paint applied. Having read all the performance Mopar magazines over the years, he knew there were lots of ways of “hopping” up these cars. Having a good 440, the decision was made to build the car the way Hupka wanted it to be, and the hunt was one for all the little tweaks possible. Lots of parts were sourced from Garry Keay, friends, swap meets and other retail outlets such as the well-known West Coast Mopar racer, Bob Mazzolini Racing in Riverside, California. There was some rust on the wheel arches and around the rear window and left side of the windshield. The car had been roaming around Merritt for years before the previous owner drove it around the Fraser Valley. It had been in very good shape before being parked and obviously was home to a few rodents. There was a large nest inside the dash, and some adventuresome rodent had taken nuts all the way up the exhaust pipes to the valvetrain. Hupka didn’t care that the rodents had loved the car, but it was far from perfect. It was a 4-speed car with the 440 cu.in. motor and the correct “Hemi”-style 18-spline transmission. The fender tag indicated it was a 4-speed car, with a 26-in. radiator, 3:91 gears and a hood “air grabber” system. Sunfire Yellow Y2 was the original colour...but it was supposed to have a 383 cu. in. engine. With the partial build sheet in hand, he was thinking of a bone-stock Concours numbers-matching restoration, and the colour was a good score for Hupka; since going into the dealership in ‘69 and seeing a Sunfire yellow car, he was hooked on that colour. The car came without power steering or power brakes.

The existing 440 cu. in. mill was sent to Norm Wilson at Fortins Machine Shop in Chilliwack, and it was upgraded with new pistons, a 30-over bore, balanced, a Mopar 484 “purple” camshaft, Mopar M1 dual-plane 4 bbl. aluminum intake manifold, Holley 3310 carb and electronic ignition. The car has the great “Lopy” sound but is very streetable. Although ceramic headers were initially installed, now the stock high-performance exhaust manifolds run through a 2.5-in. exhaust system with Hemi reproduction mufflers from Accurate Exhaust of Roseburg, Oregon. The whole suspension was dismantled, sand blasted and painted, as well as receiving new bearings, bushings, shocks, and HD Hemi rear springs. The car received new gas tank and new fuel lines as well as new hard and rubber brake lines. The original front manual drum brake system was replaced with ‘70s Dodge Dart spindles, Chrysler Cordoba 11:75-in. rotors and ‘75 B-Body calipers. The rear end has the 3.23 gears so it is good on gas and has the coveted Chrysler Police duty 15x7 wheels. These wheels were available up to 1974 on cop cars and taxis, but Hupka recently purchased reproductions for the rear that are 8 inches wide. Presently the tires are 215/70x15 BFG T/A up front and 275/60x15 BFG T/A rear.

The car sat in Hupka’s garage for a year until friends told him of Garry The hood has two scoops with the “red screen inserts,” indicating the car Keay, the local Mopar Guru, so he took the car to Keay for some help. has the factory ram air setup. Black inserts indicate non-ram air setup. Keay sandblasted the engine bay and trunk and presented Hupka the The two hood stripes are painted the correct black organosol-textured

Attending numerous car shows means having to park in tight spots and with manual steering this is no easy chore, so power steering was looking better all the time. In April 2010, he attended the the Mopar Spring Fling car show and swap meet in Van Nuys, Calif and purchased for $65 a power steering column and pump for the ‘69 Roadrunner. He also decided buckets might be more comfortable and they were optional items for 1969. He traded a friend his bench seat for a set of buckets that needed work, but good luck ever getting a bench seat again as they are now extremely popular and rare. In 1969, halfway through the production run, a highly coveted 1969.5 model of the Roadrunner had a black fibreglass hood that was held in place with four hood pins and had no hinges at all, but had the all important 440 engine with the three carbs. The car was finished in 2003 and was in the Abbotsford Collector Car show at Tradex for its maiden showing. Since then, it has been to Vernon, Seattle and even Las Vegas for shows. In 2008, a handful of cars left the Lower Mainland to attend the “Mopars on the Strip” show in Vegas. By the time they left Salt Lake City, there was a convoy of He wanted to buy new foam and seat covers for his 1969 buckets, but Mopars heading to Sin City. was told the pattern was much different than the bench seat cars...so new door panels and rear bench seat cover was also bought. FEATURE: CUBAN CAR CULTURE

A Rolling Museum

The streets of Cuba appear frozen in time Story and photos by Rick Francoeur

C

uba. It’s a mecca for vintage car lovers. A rolling museum featuring what many believe is the golden age of the automobile. The brightly painted tapestry of mainly 1950s nameplates such as Chevy, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Dodge and Ford make the streets of Cuba appear frozen in time. For the majority of the last fifty-plus years, Cubans have only had access to cars purchased before the country’s 1959 revolution. Newer Russian-made Lada’s, Czechoslovakian Skodas and the odd newer European nameplate are seen here and there, but the vast majority of the autos in Cuba are mid-fifties beauties. Parts stopped with the embargo as well, and as a

result drivers have gotten creative, trading and repurposing vintage car parts to make existing vehicles last for some 50 years despite burning sunny skies and salty ocean air. The ingenuity we saw on our recent trip to Cuba in keeping these old rides running was astounding. That said, one thing in common between car enthusiasts in Canada and those in Cuba was evident - the love affair with the automobile transcends politics, language and borders. On a sunny October day in old Havana, my wife and I stumbled upon a car park teeming with vintage vehicles. Mostly 1950s era, they were painted with pride in backyards with paintbrushes and paint smuggled in from the United States. A large number of the cars have been converted from coupe to convertible with a welding torch, and for two automotive enthusiasts from Canada, it was to say the least, awe-inspiring. Cobbled together with pride, these iconic, beautiful and historic vehicles may contain more spare parts than our local British Columbia landfills. What became evident is that the drivers are as fascinating as the cars themselves. As someone with 30 years in the automotive industry in British Columbia, meeting and talking to these self-taught mechanics, whose creativity and resourcefulness has kept their cars running for decades, was a pleasure and represented a true example of automotive ingenuity. While there, we met with two fixtures of the local car culture, Alain Galvez and his family friend Juan Carlos Rodriguez, who took us a spectacular site-seeing trip of Havana, the one you don’t read about in the guidebooks.

Alain’s family is the proud owner of a red-and-white 1957 Buick Century Riviera. By Canadian standards, it’s a 6 out of 10, but in Cuba it’s easy to overlook missing door jams and rubbers. Alain is a member of the A Lo Cubano Classic Car Club, the vintage auto enthusiasts made famous around the world thanks to the Discovery Channel. The show chronicles the members of the club and their struggles maintaining their cars despite the embargoes that make obtaining factory parts impossible. For Cuban families, owning a classic from the 1950’s can bring in much-needed income

when used as a private taxi. The average salary for a state job in Cuba is around $30 per month, while a taxi driver in high tourist season can expect to earn $30 a day. For the owner of a classic car, $30 to $50 an hour is not uncommon for a ride through the historic areas of Havana. As guests of A Lo Cubano, we were invited to a private show in the parking lot of Havana’s legendary Tropicana Club where A Lo Cubano members brought their cars for me to see, review and discuss. President Alberto Gutierrez Alonso welcomed me on behalf of “Canada’s legendary 360 Fabrication custom car builders” to the event. It was an honour to be a part of such a special event, and to review the cars and give tips to the owners. The level of pride the club owners had for these mobile museums was fantastic. 30 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017

Let’s face it, five-plus decades is a long time to keep any old car running, and I saw resourceful Cubans utilizing parts from Russian-made Lada’s, an engine from a Peugeot, a suspension from a tractor. Those put-together vehicles are commonly called Cuba’s Frankenstein cars, but it’s important to note that we also saw some spectacular 1955 Chevys, a gorgeous 1957 Olds Rocket 88, and a ’59 pink Cadillac that would stop traffic on the streets of Vancouver. Like any show-and-shine in Canada, the range of vehicles covered 2 through 10. There are enough 1950s classic cars to cover the streets of Havana in a nostalgic glow, and spending a week there makes it truly feel as though you’ve crossed a time warp. Over 50 years have passed since these machines were shiny and new, but to see them rolling through the streets today can still make a Canadian car buff drool.
