2018 Mustang to Feature Industry-First Quiet Start
T
he 2018 Ford Mustang will feature Quiet Exhaust mode as well as the industryfirst Quiet Start, which is known as Good Neighbour Mode among Mustang engineers. The idea for this came to be when the former head of vehicle engineering for Ford, Steve von Foerster, backed his Shelby GT350 Mustang out of his driveway one morning in suburban Detroit and had the police called on him due to loud noise coming from the V8 engine. This led to the development of the Quiet Start which will be featured on the 2018 Mustang GT and allows drivers to keep engine sounds to a minimum if they wish. The feature allows for the scheduling of when it is activated by using steering wheel-mounted controls to toggle through the menu in the instrument cluster to select when owners want to start their Mustang without the typical V8 rumble. For example, users can set the Quiet Start to be activated between 8pm and 7am to ensure no neighbours are disturbed. In addition to Quiet Start and Quiet Exhaust mode, the 2018 Mustang will be equipped with an Active Valve performance exhaust which provides different exhaust volumes for Normal, Sport and Track modes. Joseph Aleven’s 1963 Thunderbird is a true survivor Story and photos by John Gunnell
W
e first saw Joseph Aleven’s 1963 Thunderbird parked in the parking lot during a car show at the Grignon Mansion, a historic site in Kaukauna, Wis. Aleven, a resident of nearby Little Chute, didn’t know that the car show was open only to 1959 and earlier cars, but the rules were firm and the beautiful, unrestored Thunderbird hardtop had to stay with the modern cars in the parking lot. As you can imagine, the big Thunderbird stood out.
Aleven inherited the well-preserved car from his brother, who bought it brand new, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, close to Minnesota. “I believe he bought it in the fall of 1962, after the 1963 models came out,” said Aleven. “I don’t know the exact date. He was fascinated with cars and planes. They were kind of his hobbies.” Aleven said his brother bought a little Cessna four-passenger airplane that he could land at their sister’s farm, in the alfalfa fields. “He was obsessed with flying,” Joseph stressed. “He would come in and land his plane and give us rides and such. He was obsessed with planes and cars and never married. In his will, he specified that his Thunderbird not be driven in January, because he didn’t want it used in winter.” Aleven got the Thunderbird in 2008 and hasn’t driven it very much since then. “The Thunderbird has 86,467 actual miles,” he noted. “I got it just about nine years ago and I haven’t driven it much at all. It has the 390 V8, automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, a very nice SwingAway steering wheel, an electric driver’s seat and an original Ford AM radio. Nothing has been monkied

with. The trunk is so big you could put half a cow in there. The whole car is so large.” The car does not have air conditioning, according to Aleven. “It’s got the side vent windows,” he noted. “Pop them open and it’s a cross breeze. You didn’t have all the luxuries back in 1963. You didn’t need air conditioning. It’s an old car. It’s 53 years old. I enjoy it, but it’s expensive running these cars. They don’t get the best gas mileage. But I still liked it. In the summer, I’d take it out to go out. We used it in a wedding once. It’s in the family. It’s a family heirloom.” The white sidewalls on the tires are yellowed, although in terms of tread wear, the tires look brand new. “That’s one thing my brother was really particular about,” said Aleven. “But he’s been gone for 11 years.” Joseph tried to keep after the car like his brother used to. “When it’s stored, I take the battery out and put in dryer sheets to keep mice away. I take care of it, but I’m moving to Brownsville, Texas and will have to sell it,” Aleven isn’t a collector, but the Thunderbird was treated well and not used like an everyday car. “It was given to me because I was the only brother left in the family,” he explained. “I only had one sister still

living in Holland. Our parents had nine children and I was the youngest. Almost everybody else died. My sister was living yet at that time - she has passed away since - and she asked me if I wanted the car. I said I would love it.” During Aleven’s ownership, the car was taken only to the car show at the Grignon Mansion. “Once I was tempted to take it to the Octoberfest in Appleton, where they have hundreds of cars,” said Joseph. “That’s the most fun part for me, to go down on Friday night and just stroll the cars. It’s quite a success, I think. It’s always very, very busy.” Aleven’s car and other 1963 Thunderbirds retained the previous styling with a new sculptured body side feature line, a modestly revised “electric shaver” grille, new taillights, new side trim and new wheel covers. Inside, buyers found medal-clad brake and accelerator pedals. This was the first T-Bird to use hydraulic windshield wipers powered by the power steering pump. The brakes were more fade-resistant and nearly 100 pounds of sound-deadening materials were added. Suspension and exhaust improvements, lifetime chassis lubrication and an alternator in place of a generator were other updates. The 1963 grille incorporated a concealed hood latch, eliminating the old cable-operated release. The front fenders had a horizontal crease line that started just behind the grille, passed over the front wheel opening and continued past the middle of the door where it slanted downwards for a few inches and faded into the door. Just below the crease line, near the centre of the door, were three groupings of forward-slanting chrome hash marks with five strips in each group. Motor Trend (October 1962) said these were supposed to remind one of turbine waste gates. 12 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017

Chrome Thunderbird scripts were moved to the rear fenders. New deep-dish wheel covers followed the turbine motif. There were no big changes to the inside of basic models, although the inner door panels had new white and red courtesy lights for added safety when passengers were entering/exiting the car. The exhaust was supposedly a quieter and longer lasting system featuring 2.0-in. diameter laminated tubing (double pipes, one inside the other) and an asbestos-wrapped, aluminized steel muffler. A 1.78-in. diameter tailpipe was employed. The 1963 T-Bird front suspension was lubricated for the “life of the car, which Ford estimated as 100,000 miles or seven years. Road noise and vibrations were reduced through use of a newly-

ach August, thousands of car fans descend on Central California’s Monterey Peninsula for what might be the biggest and best celebration of motoring in the world. Name a classic, collectible or high-performance car and it will certainly be in attendance. Add to that the endless singing of exhaust notes, or concours and auctions at every turn and you have the perfect recipe for the ultimate spectator event. From Porsche to Ferrari, Cadillac to Corvette, BMW to Buick – it’s all here. Depending on whom you ask, the highlight of Speed Week is the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Five hundred vintage cars with racing pedigree are set against the legendary backdrop of Laguna Seca Raceway. There’s nowhere else in North America to watch this many stars of the track perform exactly as intended – as loud and fast as possible. Dozens of classes are represented across this four-day event and span several decades. Some of the older vehicles first raced in the 1920s, and the most recent would have seen track time in the early 1990s. Despite the impression that race cars are only a rich man’s game, there is a wide range of owners represented at the Reunion. While the price of many vintage competitors has skyrocketed in recent years ($4 million Porsche 935s are normal) some of the cars are driven by owners who picked them up for a song and have worked tirelessly to bring them back to glory. Other cars are so unattainable that they can only survive with factory support, or with help from wealthy benefactors. In

many cases the original drivers are behind the wheel, decades after their first drive. Laguna Seca Raceway is celebrating 60 years of motorsports in 2017. This track is perhaps one of the most legendary in North America. The rolling hills of coastal California were not avoided when the track was built (which took just 60 days and $1,500,000) and as a result drivers must negotiate one of the most notorious sections of competition
pavement in the world – the Corkscrew – as they traverse the 3.6-km loop. Unlike the average race track, there is a significant elevation gain (almost 200 feet) and competitors have just a few hundred metres to drop sharply back down a series of five turns to the namesake dry lake bed that forms pit row and the paddocks. Due to the hilly terrain, the track also offers incredible spectator

vantages - there are few grandstands but many shady areas to set up a chair and watch legends of motorsport cruise by, and there’s certainly not a bad seat in the house. When at Car Week, it’s good practice to check out other events going on in the area. Although Pebble Beach Concours (and its enforced dress code) may be a big attraction, there are plenty of free shows and events to attend. Nearby Carmel hosts an on-street car show as well as the end point of several casual road rallies. Porsche enthusiasts flock to the Werks Reunion – featuring hundreds of Germany’s finest coupes – while Ferrari fans can indulge in childhood dreams at the Concorso Italiano. If flashy cars aren’t your thing, the Concours d’Lemons features oddball and reviled cars that don’t have a place among the high-gloss crowd. Auctions are also a huge draw and not just for buyers. For a modest entry fee, you can watch dozens of rare and valuable cars cross the stage, all while being astonished at the prices they

fetch. Some of the results from these auctions are impressive. Sotheby’s sold a 2006 Ford GT for $380,000, as well as a 1936 Packard for over $630,000. For a taste of absurdity just listen to these numbers: $4,000,000 for a 1928 Mercedes-Benz, $1.1m for a Shelby Cobra, and even $22 million which earned the lucky buyer a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1 driven in competition by greats such as Carroll Shelby, Stirling Moss, and Jack Brabham.
Monterey Car Week is certainly an experience not matched anywhere else in North America, perhaps even the world. The atmosphere is thrilling and the air lingers with the smell of race fuel and the echo of high-power exotics and race cars. While a week may seem like a long time, there’s definitely more than a week’s worth of events and attractions to be found here – visit once and you’ll leave only wanting to come back again.

Two Brothers... One Vision 360 Fabrication Celebrates 10 Years
T
he story of Rick and Daryl Francoeur is a classic fairy tale of two brothers following their dream and rising to the top their field through hard work and determination. The year was 2006 when the two did a side job for a fellow in the basement of Rick’s house who in turn told another guy about their workmanship. Armed with a welder the brothers created several projects over the next four months for this customer leading him to try to convince them to quit their jobs and do this full time. Since both were young married fathers with babies at home they dismissed the idea as, although they loved the thought, they couldn’t see how this adventure would pay their mortgages. Over the next month of working long hours at their respective jobs, the two couldn’t stop thinking about the opportunity, so they met again with the customer who guaranteed if they went out on their own, he could provide a year’s worth of work. So the two decided to take the leap creating 360 Fabrication and hired their first employee within the first four days of operation. Today, they employee more than 45 people over three divisions. 360 Fabrication, the flagship business, is now the largest custom vehicle builder in Canada with over 40 projects on the go at any time and a waiting list of over 50. They are able to continually produce this volume due to the fact everything is done in house, as they boast their own fabrication, upholstery, mechanical and custom paint departments all under their multi-thousand square foot facility that they purchased in 2010. What also sets them apart is that they are one of the only shops in the country that do business globally, as they have clientele from Asia, Europe, Central America and the United States, with a customer list that includes Red Bull, General Motors, Toyota, McDonalds and Tim Hortons. They also have an impressive list of wealthy clientele that are continuously building or restoring pieces for their collections. always produced a quality product but now we have great systems in place for maximum efficiencies.” On the biggest changes he has seen over the last decade cites the different demographic as his customer base. “Ten years ago our clients were 65-year-old wealthy guys and now we see 35-yearold successful business owners, which is exciting and promising for the future of the industry. The other big change in the industry is that parts we used to have to fabricate are now more readily available, which speeds up build times.”
Club in 2016, and is the highest-rated certified collision shop in the Fraser Valley. The state-of-the-art facility is the longest-standing member of the North American chain in the province, focusing on achieving the highest environmental standards while boasting the ability to repair any vehicle including having an aluminum room to handle those repairs.
As for the future, he sees consolidation within the industry with shops like theirs getting bigger, and fewer smaller shops able to compete as customer expectations increase. “I know a lot of people won’t like that statement and say that is not the point of hot rodding, but with the price of the average car around $100,000, it changes the game. For example, if something goes wrong with a paint job, which can happen, and if the shop is unable to afford to repaint it, then what? We already see the shops like ours growing and believe that will continue along while others fall off.”
As for the future of 360, Francoeur says you are going to see more 360 Audio is what Rick calls the “fun business,” as he is a huge of a global venture and expansion on a very large scale, especially music fan and takes great joy and respects the fact that they in Asia, and based on their track record over the past ten years, can make old (and new) cars and make them like studio sound it would be difficult to bet against them! systems. In a Lincoln Continental they built for a customer (to the tune of just over a million dollars) Francoeur says “the audio system sets the standard” as it won several awards over the two years it was shown. When asked to comment on the success they have enjoyed over the past decade while so many others met with failure, Francoeur replies “we have seen a lot of changes, we’ve seen people make a lot of mistakes, not diversify their services in a broad enough manner, but mostly people opening up a shop because it is their hobby and fail to treat it as a business. We have also made a lot of mistakes, but we have been fortunate to have lots of people helping us including a great staff. Daryl and I are not hobbyists, although we have lots of toys. This is first and foremost a business and that is what I really believe separates us from the pack. Our business today does not resemble what it looked like 10 years ago, as we have grown as business owners every year. We have

But it’s Canadian-born shops like Speedtech Performance in St. George, Utah that are really at Heaven’s Gate of pro-touring success. It takes one to know one and as gearheads themselves, Speedtech Performance saw an opportunity to relocate its American-based performance business outside of Vancouver, Canada and expand company operations across the border. Today, their parts are selling like wild fire across the Middle East and Australia. “Pro Touring has pushed manufacturers [like ourselves] to develop parts that make the car all around more useful, safe, and fun to drive. My pro-touring car is now just about as fast as my drag car, but it handles well, brakes well, gets better gas mileage, and cruises comfortably 26 MUSCLE CAR PLUS MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017
on long road trips. What more could you want?” said Creative Director Ben Meissner. The icing on the cake, Speedtech Performance applies the same quality craftsmanship to its custom builds as it does its product development. “People just don’t seem to be afraid to ship their car all the way across the country,” laughed shop owner Blake Foster. If that’s not a testament to the brand they’ve built throughout the years, then we’re not sure what is. In the interview below, Foster talks about the natural progression of the pro-touring movement, important brands and products, as well as future market insight. MCP: What separates this segment from the rest? BF: “I think mostly it’s the suspension upgrades; it’s the technical side of it that guys are starting to understand like suspension geometry, and I think a lot of it is the actual style of the build. There’s obviously a big difference between a ‘69 Camaro that’s built drag race style, or pro street style, or pro-touring style. Different amenities, different emphasis.” MCP: Talk about understanding your core competency and best serving your customer. BF: “Our prime focus is really manufacturing the parts, designing the chassis, building the parts, and selling both retail and wholesale on the parts side. The car builds just seem to stem from that [because people trust the quality of the name behind the parts]. People are building cars and phoning looking for parts, and they get the conversation going about ‘Oh I need this installed’ and well, we have an install facility.” MCP: How big is the North American market? BF: “Man, it’s big and it’s getting bigger. We always sit around and try to conjure up the numbers on the Ouija board. You figure, there’s probably an honest 20 recognized players in the pro-touring market when you’re talking DSC, TCI, Art Morrison, us, etc. We’ve kinda figured the math for those 20 companies; it might be $180,000,000 - $250,000,000 a year in sales. Maybe? So, it’s a big market. And that doesn’t include all the crossover stuff—like our products work in drag racing and hot rod, so it’s a BIG market.” MCP: In a healthy market, what’s being underserved and where’s the opportunity for growth? BF: “There were about 7,000 cars at a recent car show, and I’ll

bet you no more than five percent of the ones that I saw had any suspension on them aside from stock. So, how much potential is there still out there? morphed into Pro RACE Touring, so to speak. You’ve got Good Guys Auto Cross, the Optima Ultimate Street Car deal, and you’ve got all these different events that you can go and actually race the car at—auto cross and road racing and slalom and speed stop and stuff like that. It’s going the exact same path that Pro Street followed 25 years ago, where it went from really big tires and lots of chrome to the street-legal race cars that we see on TV and Yellow Bullet Nationals and the Street Car Nationals. It’s just morphing into that same deal. [Another thing], a market push more in the performance direction and less in the car show side, especially in Pro Touring. You’re seeing guys do a more serious, purpose-built car…almost building race cars instead of pro-touring cars. They’re barely street legal and not super fancy on the outside. And they’re just wanting to go beat on them. It’s just that trend.”
MCP: How has the game changed overall? BF: “It’s become an expensive hobby and the players definitely have deep pockets. It’s gone from ballers, to brakes and parts… on the race track. We just had a customer who drove from Washington down to Montana for an Optima event. Had a beautiful 77-78 Trans Am that he built with all our suspension on it. This is a full-on $150,000 car and he’s out racing the thing, catches it on fire, and burns the back half of the car off. For no good reason, other than to just go and hang out with the guys and have some fun,” said Foster. MCP:What is the team working on right now? BF: “We just finished designing a new chassis with all of our suspenMCP:How has Pro Touring evolved sion for a local customer’s ‘53-54 Ford pickup. We did a brand new for Speedtech Performance? And now, I’ll bet you our average ticket is $10,000. They Entering the Pro Touring club is a far-fetched reality for many, but just want everything. And a lot of times, when these guys are building hey—we can dream. In the meantime, let’s live vicariously through the cars, they’ve realized that ‘If I just get everything from one place, professionals like Speedtech Performance. then I only have to deal with one place. They know what I need.’ We know what brakes work with our suspensions, what wheels fit the brakes, what tires fit the car, and what radiator works with the motor. So, we end up selling them everything: wheels, tires, brakes, exhaust, the cooling system, and everything underneath the car. We just put it all together and it just shows up at their door.” MCP: What are the most popular vehicles Speedtech Performance is working on regularly? BF: “The ‘69 Camaro, or really Camaros in general. After that, I think the next car would be the Chevelle or Nova. But by far the Camaro seems to be the most popular car out there. You would think that GM was still making them. The supply never seems to end.” MCP: What are the trends influencing the segment and where do you see Pro Touring heading in the future? BF: “The big focus now seems to be Pro Touring that started out with a ‘69 Camaro and some 18- and 20-in. chrome wheels on it—parked at SEMA with a really nice paint job. All of the mechanics have been rebuilt and Dave regularly enjoys driving the car and has taken a number of good road trips in it.
