Jeep and Mopar Reveal New Concept Vehicles at Easter Jeep Safari in Moab

A

t the recent Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, the Jeep and Mopar brands teamed up to develop and reveal a variety of new concept vehicles that showcase an array of production and prototype Jeep parts developed and built by the Mopar brand. A total of seven concept vehicles were unveiled at the event, all of which showcased to off-road enthusiasts how Jeep Performance Parts can allow you to add capability and appearance upgrades.

Jeep Grand One Jeep Grand One First up is the Jeep Grand One, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the ultra-popular Grand Cherokee with a modernized spin on the classic 1993 ZJ. It features custom 18-inch lace-style wheels, OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

high-clearance fender flares, extended wheelbase, and sits on a set of 33-inch BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain KM2 tires. Inside features include 1990’s-inspired materials and touches and utilizes a durable bed liner to replace the carpet. Under the hood, a 5.2L V8 engine is paired to a four-speed automatic transmission. Jeep Safari (Pictured above) Next is the Jeep Safari concept where the main goal was bringing the outdoors in while keeping the doors and roof on, giving the passengers in the back seat a great view. This Wrangler-based concept features a translucent hard-top roof panel, two-level aluminum cargo rack, a raked windshield, and custom LED tail lamps among others. Inside, two rear bucket seats are rotated outboard, making it easier for rear seat occupants to view the outside, while an instrument panel-mounted iPad adds to the high-tech vibe. Jeep Quicksand The Jeep Quicksand concept is loud, fast and fun and is powered by a Mopar 392 Crate Hemi engine with eight-stack injection, mated

to a six-speed Getrag manual transmission. The concept is based on a Wrangler but features a longer wheelbase, with trimmed front and rear body and a chopped hard top and windshield. The interior features a minimalist approach with two front bucket seats, flat aluminum door panels, tilt-out windshield glass and a chrome roll bar. Other features of the Quicksand include 37-inch mud-terrain tires, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a Warn winch concealed in a front-mounted Moon tank.

Toyota Unveils FT-4X Concept at New York Auto Show Toyota used the 2017 New York International Auto Show to unveil its newest concept called the FT-4X Concept, which is a four-wheel drive crossover that is highlighted by a long list of unique functionalities, capabilities and a Rugged Charm compact design. The exterior of the FT-4X features what designers are calling an X-Theme, which appears in many places throughout the vehicle. The boxy exterior design is somewhat reminiscent of the current Jeep Renegade, but has enough futuristic flair to help distinguish itself fully from its urban and off-road-capable counterpart. The concept sits on a set of capable Goodyear All-season tires and stands 1.62 metres tall. The interior features an open concept design that has been sectioned into three zones: Clean Zone which is where the passenger sits, Wet Zone where all-weather mats are features and passengers can stow wet or damp items, and the Rear CargoZone where the floor lays completely flat and features topside tracks for securing cargo. Toyota has speculated that the FT-4X could potentially employ a small displacement four-cylinder engine equipped with mechanical four-wheel drive and selectable low range, which will allow it to be ultracapable in a plethora of situations.

Nissan Unveils Project Basecamp Titan XD Pro-4X at Overland Expo Nissan used the recent Overland Expo 2017 West to unveil its specially modified 2017 Titan XD Pro-4X called Project Basecamp. The truck was designed as a dream project for overlanding enthusiasts, and started as a stock Titan XD featuring the Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine, innovative bed features and full-feature five-passenger interior. The truck boasts over 60 aftermarket parts and accessories from some of the leading manufacturers in the overlanding field, creating a self-sustaining “basecamp for exploring the back country. To start the transformation of the truck, a set of 35x12.50x17 tires were mounted on a set of 17-inch beadlock aluminum-alloy wheels to give some added capability, while a special 3-inch lift kit provides extra tire clearance at each corner. A long list of exterior modifications includes custom front and rear bumpers, fender flares and cab-length rock sliders, custom hood and light bar and chase lights. After that is where the overlander survival essentials were added to the build, including a Leitner Designs Overland bed cage, Rhino Rack Pioneer rack system and Foxwing Awning, a CVT tent and vestibule, a Black Forest portable Fridge Freezer, water canisters and fuel packs from Daystar, and an emergency kit from ARB. Finishing off Project Basecamp is a custom Patriot X2 Off-Road Adventure Trailer with a matching vinyl wrap.

Surprisingly Challenging Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde

I

have been heading down to Moab on a regular basis for Easter Jeep Safari now for over 15 years. And despite there being a vast array of trails, it seems we run our favourites every year including Moab Rim, Metal Masher, Poison Spider and Golden Spike, then run out of time for all the other great trails spread all around Moab. This year, with my Jeep not finished and the condo booked with friends, I made a call to Toyota to see if I could get my hands on a “loaner vehicle us media types have access to for test drives and vehicle reviews. We recently had a

Moab’s Kane Creek Canyon Trail proves to be even tougher than originally thought

chance to test drive the new TRD Pro models and I thought the new truck could more than handle the easier trails around Moab. This would give us a chance to hit some of the other great trails we typically don’t do when rolling on big tires in our highly modified trail rigs. I assured Toyota that we would do our best to not beat the truck up (too much) – but they understood where we were going and what we were in for. Yes I took a fully loaded 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro to Moab….for Easter Jeep Safari. Even my buddy Andy at Warn Winch chuckled at me.

My crew of wheelers included my usual sidekick Todd from Aqualu Industries, and along with Todd we had some Moab rookies. Dave brought along his Samurai, locked at both ends and more than trail capable, and Glen, who flew to Saskatchewan the week before we left to buy a lifted supercharged four-door JK Rubicon, which he drove home to Kelowna and then back and forth to Moab, and wheeled all week! While Glen had been to Moab once before and rented a side-by-side, anything we did was new for Dave. I picked Kane Creek as our first trail. I had driven Kane Creek once before – actually on my first trip to Moab, back around 2000. Our group that day got bumped all the way down Kane Creek Canyon Blvd, as all the other trails were packed and busy. As you head down Kane Creek Blvd., you pass Moab Rim, Pritchett Canyon, Cliff Hanger and eventually it turns into Kane Springs Rd. – gravel at this point till you find the trail marker for Kane Creek Canyon trail. That first trip, I remembered the trail being quite easy; I found it odd the Safari rated it a 6 out of 10 on the trail difficulty scale – one below Moab Rim, which is a very difficult trail… Huh, how tough can it really be? This trail is deceptive, and at 13-14 miles, offers a wide array of challenges. The trail starts as a dusty back road, as it winds its way along the canyon floor. A couple of dry creek crossings were interesting, and there were bypasses for me, while Dave and Glen had a chance to flex out their rigs. After a few miles, we came across a couple standing beside their truck – a slightly lifted Tacoma TRD Pro. The driver says, ‘well, that’s the end of your day, boys.’ I ask why, and he said there is no way you’re getting that stock Tacoma though the next section. Huh, I think, well let’s have a look. At this point, a group of modified Jeeps came along, so we got a chance to watch what they did, then we jumped to it, walking the Toyota across the ledge on two tires, and squeezed though the gap. We invited the other Toyota

along but he didn’t seem quite as enthused about following us and declined. I think that was for the best… The road at this point starts to weave in and out of Kane Creek and the red clay and sand berms make for a great rally course. Dave had

that Samurai flying along at times with all four wheels in the air over the whoops and bumps as I tried to find alternate routes to pass that flying Sami. We were making some great time till we started to climb out of the creek bed and up the side of the canyon wall that would take us up and out the top of Kane Canyon. Here is where we found everyone running the trail this day as we came upon a line of 50+ rigs wrapping up and around the next corner – well, that’s not a good sign. We hiked up and I got a few comments of ‘are you the guy driving the Tacoma?’ Yup, I said, buts it’s okay, it’s a rental… What we were up against was a challenge called Hamburger Hill, and a reminder that trails change a lot over 15+ years. Yup, this was a 6 rated section… well, no time to be a coward. Todd and I planned out our attack route right up to the large ledge the big Jeeps were battling, and a way to line up on the “bypass”, which, by the way, had you snaking right up to the edge – and I mean right to the edge of a 100-foot drop into the canyon. With all the Jeep guys’ cameras rolling, waiting for the end of our stock Tacoma and all the steel crunching, I hit the rear locker button, dialled in the crawl control to get the front end working (acts like a brake controlled limited-slip), and we made it right up and onto the rock slab in the bypass in one go. When I say onto the rock slab – I do mean onto – as in all four tires spinning away, and the frame firmly landed on the rock slab. With some hi-lift jacking in the rims, lifting each corner, we managed to stuff enough rocks under the tires to clear the slab and clear out the trail without holding the other four-wheelers up too much.

14 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

Not bad - half way, and only one stuck. How much worse can it get? As the trail wrapped round the canyon, the trail presented narrow gaps, steep drops and more and more rock climbs. Dave was having a great time in his mini-me Sami, and Glen’s new-to-him and Moab wheeled-for-the-firsttime JK was doing great with a little bit of a finicky rear locker. We paused a couple of times to let other groups go by, but really, we were having a great time and I got a hang of the Toyota’s abilities and lack thereof - ground clearance and no rock sliders. And we came out the top with a small dent under the passenger side door, and some brush scratches from the creek bottom. The best part was when we finally crested the last hill, and a large group of Jeepers all stood up and started clapping as I came over the hill in the Toyota followed by Dave’s little Sami and Glen’s JK. What an adventure, and it goes to show you even stock rigs (with a great team of guys determined to get that truck through) can have an amazing day in Moab and you don’t need to run the big bad trails to do it! I don’t think it will be so many years again till we run Kane Creek, and if its your first time to Moab, I would suggest not doing it in a stock off-the-showroom-floor 4x4 of any kind, but I will be back and bringing a bigger off-road rig next time – with rock sliders.

FEATURE: MONSTER JAM

Monster of an Experience Story and photos by Russell Purcell I recently had the privilege of serving as an official Monster Jam judge at the Vancouver stop for this travelling circus of rolling leviathans. I made it a family experience, as this is what Monster Jam events excel at, so my small entourage included my brother, brother-in-law, and wide-eyed nephew Owen. A great experience was had by all, especially me, as being in the spotlight for a few hours and responsible for judging three of the most exciting competitions on the card - donuts, wheelies, and the pinnacle discipline, freestyle - was an experience that I will relish for many years to come. The panel of five judges was asked to arrive early so that we could be briefed about how the judging process works, given a list of pointers, directives and judging criteria with which we would base our scores from 1-10. I had attended a number of Monster Jam events over the years as a fan, but being a part of the action added a new element to the experience. I was probably a little more qualified than the rest of the judging panel, as I have been a motorsports enthusiast since childhood and have worked as a professional racing photographer for over two decades, but up until this event, I have never had any experience or training as a judge. The judging team was comprised of two men and three women, and none of us had ever performed the role before. Surprisingly, and much to the surprise of the event announcing team, our score cards often read the same across the board. At least we were on the same page and consistent. The judging criteria centred on awarding points to the eight competitors based on a number of factors. These include the variety and type of tricks attempted, how the competitors tackled the various course obstacles, overall car control, and of course the “wow” factor. It was 20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

immediately apparent by the reaction of the fans that they love rollovers, crashes, and all other forms of destruction, and if they were in charge of the scoring, these maladies would generate the highest scores. However, the judges were advised that these activities actually needed to be given lower scores than those feats that had big visual impact, but were completed in a successful manner. At the conclusion of a run, the judges had about 20 seconds to determine, and enter, their “official” scores. The fans in the audience are given the opportunity to participate in the voting process by using a special app (www.judgeszone.com) on their cell phones and mobile devices. The overall score is then tabulated by the series officials who will drop the judges’ high and low scores, but then add the score of a virtual judge that is determined after averaging those entered via the app. The grid features a cast of eight drivers (mostly male, but the contingent of female drivers is growing and helping the series grow in

popularity) who strive to wow the crowd by performing seemingly impossible aerial moves and acrobatic feats from behind the wheel of the mechanical monsters that become characters on their own, ranging from adorable canines and spike-studded war machines, to futuristic police cars, raging bulls, and fourwheeled zombies. The Monster Jam trucks are robust, tube-framed vehicles wrapped in fibreglass bodywork powered by enormous 540 cubicinch engines that produce upwards of 1,500 horsepower. They are suspended on enormous tires that stand 66-inches tall and 43-inches wide manufactured by BKT, a company renowned for producing tires for tractors and heavy equipment. These aggressively-treaded tires weigh north of 800 pounds. All of the trucks feature front and rear lockers to ensure that the drivers always have equal power delivery and traction at all four wheels. The drivers are racing against the clock to demonstrate their driving skills, creativity, and the incredible handling dynamics of these dedicated racing machines. The longest event, Freestyle, is a mere 90 seconds in duration, while racing, and the quad and UTV buggy support events, tend to be shorter as they are based on a set number of laps. The Monster Jam trucks are pushed to their physical limits as the competition heats up, with each driver doing their best to out-perform the other competitors but without damaging their vehicles to the point that they can no longer run or operate in a safe manner. Monster Jam events are held both indoors and out, but due to the limited space offered by arena venues, events like the one I judged at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum require that the trucks operate at slower speeds. This reduction hinders the capacity of the drivers to execute long-distance jumps and high-altitude aerial manoeuvres. However, fans will still be impressed by what the drivers of these innovative machines can accomplish during their performance runs given the relatively diminutive size of the arena. Another major disadvantage of the indoor stadium environment is the fact that the noise levels can be amplified due to reverberation off the walls and ceiling, so quality ear plugs or dedicated noise cancelling headphones are a must, especially for children. However, the noise is an important element of the show, as it helps to enhance the level of excitement as well as reveal how truly powerful these vehicles really are. Monster Jam events take place across North America and at a number of events overseas – including stops this season in Australia, South Korea, France, Spain, Mexico, Argentina, and the Netherlands. Monster Jam events are unique in the world of motorsport entertainment, as fans get to see all of the action unfold before them, rather than just a small portion of a race track where speeding cars flash by and leave spectators gazing at big screens or reliant on updates from the broadcast team to follow the progress of their favourite drivers. A Monster Jam show is broken into manageable chunks and includes a proper intermission, which makes it much easier to wrangle restless and/or excited children and cater to their various needs without having to miss much of the performance. What did I take away from this experience? I definitely have a greater appreciation for what it takes to put on such an event, maintain the trucks, and keep the attention of the fans. But it was the incredible talent and showmanship displayed by the drivers that made the biggest impression on this overgrown kid. ure, any off-roader appreciates a dusty, muddy, tough-terrainfilled weekend with the indestructible Wrangler or feisty Samurai. But there’s more than one way to boost excitement and satisfy an adventurous spirit. The powersports industry - comprised of ATVs, side-by-side vehicles (SSV), motorcycles, powerboats, personal watercraft (PWC), and snowmobiles - has cultivated a devoted group of recreational enthusiasts. Guarantee an adrenaline-pumping experience and they’re guaranteed to attend, from leading the pack on Moab trail runs and backwoods exploration, to dominating Best in the Dirt (BITD), Mint 400, and UTV World Championship.

nated as club cars or industrial vehicles, which gives you an idea of just how much this industry has multiplied in a couple of decades; it seems like the sky is the limit. “SSVs are more versatile, from rural/farm transportation, general exploration, and hunting to hitting your favourite sand dunes,” added Adamy. Undeniably, currency rate pressures as well as a decrease in oil and gas drilling have impacted the powersports business in Canada, a market closely linked to discretionary spending. But for Québec-based company BRP Inc. - a respected brand with a 70-

State of the Market Clearly, the market has evolved tremendously from just two wheels in the dirt, as supported by the significant year-over-year, double-digit growth in SSV sales. Four wheelers became all the craze during the ‘90s, with global unit sales hitting 800,000 - 1,000,000 and ATVs enjoying unstoppable success. That is until “SSVs eclipsed the booming ATV market around 2008-2009,” said Nick Adamy, Director of Sales at WARN Industries. Nowadays, four-wheeler sales in North America alone are estimated between 750,000 – 800,000+ units. Categories of UTV multipurpose, UTV work, and UTV sport account for the top three segments within powersports. And those figures don’t include models desigJUNE/JULY 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 23

13 outboard supply agreements with boat manufacturers. “We have completed a record quarter and a record year in difficult market conditions,” said José Boisjoli, president and CEO. “The fourth quarter has always been the busiest of the year, in terms of sales and shipments, and our execution was flawless,” said Boisjoli. “We are seeing great momentum with the retail sales of Can-Am Defender and Maverick X3 side-by-side vehicles and Sea-Doo watercraft, which have contributed to this year’s great results. And while the Can-Am Maverick X3 model was only recently introduced to the market, the consumer and dealer response has been extremely positive,” he continued. With average ATV/SSV new unit sales ranging in price from $10,000 - $30,000+, the whole gang can jump in, gear up, and come along for a year tradition of excellence and whose portfolio includes big names like Ski-Doo and Lynx snowmobiles, Sea-Doo watercraft, Can-Am on- and off-road vehicles, Evinrude and Rotax marine propulsion systems, as well as Rotax engines for karts, motorcycles, and recreational aircraft - it was a surprisingly profitable year in challenging economic circumstances. A recent news release published by Market Watch reported a revenue increase of nine percent year-over-year. BRP’s North American retail sales are up 12 percent, mainly driven by SSV and snowmobile units. And the company added 70 new dealers to its North American powersports network, 55 to its Evinrude dealer network and

relatively inexpensive family adventure. That price tag is especially attractive when considering the cost of a late-model stock Jeep® or even a vintage Disco II in need of mechanical love or overdue upgrades. And consumers certainly have the power of choice—Yamaha, Honda, Polaris, Arctic Cat, Suzuki, and Can-Am are tried-and-true brands. Despite the explosive growth of SSV sales across North America, specifically in the States, there remains a high demand for less expensive ATVs across the Great White North. In fact, due to load capacity and ample storage space, “the Hisun Motors’ 2-up ATVs have been called the best ATVs of their type for the price by many dealers who sell competing brands,” according to Powersports Business. Furthermore, 2016 data suggests not only does the overall number of four-wheeler units sold continue to rise, but so does the cost per unit and the number of accessories at the point of purchase - especially as it applies to SSVs. Such healthy growth has enticed new lenders to enter the market, thus giving buyers access to bet-

CURRIE JK STEERING UPGRADE

TECH

1. The Currie Enterprises Currectlync steering system for the JK comes in two flavours. The modular Extreme series uses massive 1-¼ tie-rod shaft ends, a replaceable cartridge-style rod end, and in our case, weld bungs to make our own centre link. These same massive ends are available for the drag link of a JK.

Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde

T

he name Currie Enterprises is synonymous with Jeeps. Their Rock Jock axles, Ford 9-inch axles for Jeeps, suspension systems featuring the legendary Johnny Joint system – imitated industry wide - and even bumpers have been gracing Jeeps for as long as I’ve been into four-wheeling (and that’s a while now). Currie also has a version of its Currectlync Steering system available for JK, TJ and XJ Jeep models. Currie’s first modular system for the JK was beyond beefy, but for the everyday wheeler, it was a little on the expensive side. When speaking with Ray Currie at SEMA this past year, he introduced me to a new version of the steering system that retails below $600.00 for both the tie rod and the drag link. There is also a version to “flip” the tie rod to the top of the knuckles for better ground clearance, and that kit comes with the sleeves to complete the flip. Even right-hand drive versions of this system are available – all still under that $600.00 threshold. Ray also mentioned the “roll” tolerances of the tie rod have

been tightened to help reduce the annoying steel-onsteel impact when the tie rod flexes and rotates during normal use. Unlike the stock steering system that has one end crimped onto the centre link, both ends are adjustable and replaceable. The tubular tie rod is 1½ inches in diameter, while the drag link to the steering box is solid cast. I also brought in a few Currie pieces to help finish my CJK8 project. As my tie rod and drag link are shorter than a stock JK system due to the high steer arms, I used the modular tie rod ends supplied with weldin bungs, so I can order tubing and set my own link length. Currie offers several versions of these ends, and all use a thread-in tie rod end that threads in from either direction. These tie rod ends are huge with a 1 1/4-in.-diameter shaft using a 1 3/4-in. piece of DON tubing as the centre link, and of course replaceable cartridge-style rod ends. Whichever Jeep model you have or axle configuration, Currie has steering choices to help beef up your steering system and keep your Jeep rolling straight on down the road.

2. Brian’s 4-door JK Rubicon has a 3-inch lift and has seen trail use in its 50,000 kms. While not wheeled hard, both the factory drag link and the factory tie rod are already bent in a nice curve and loose enough that they twisted freely with our hands. 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

3. The Currie replacement link options include the new-for-2017 Currectlync tie-rod and drag link and also a modular extreme-duty version. The Currectlync version is a factory replacement system while the Modular system can be ordered to length or assembled yourself with weld-in tube inserts.

4. The new less-expensive version of the Currectlync steering has a 1-½ inch diameter tube for the tie-rod and a 1 ½ inch forged solid drag link that mimic the factory angles.

5. The factory configuration for the steering arms is on the bottom side of the knuckle. Currie also makes a system that flips the links to the top of the knuckles for close to the same price and uses a right-hand drive-style drag link and weld-in tapper bungs. We are using the factory location for Brian’s steering.

6. The JK tie rod uses a unique adjuster collar that is double-threaded on one end. This is due to the crimped end of the other end of the tie rod and the fact that it’s bent on both ends and otherwise would not be adjustable without removing it every time. The new Currie tie-rod uses the same system, though, with much beefier parts. 28 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

7. Unlike the factory crimped tie-rod end on the passenger side, the Currie Currectlync system has a threaded-in rod end for easy replacement without having to buy a whole new tie-rod.

8. Without moving the vehicle on the driveway, we removed the stock components and used their lengths as a baseline to install the new Currie parts. Notice that the new rod ends are all greaseable, while the stock ends are not.

9. The kit also comes with a new stabilizer mount, which is much beefier than the stock one. It needs to be used, as the new tie-rod tube is a larger diameter than the stock tie rod.

12. If you’re working on a custom axle like I am in my current project using a 1-ton Dana 60 axle form a Ford truck up front, the modular steering gives you some real beef to work with and the ability to match different steering positions found on larger axles. I actually have a shorter tie rod than a JK on the 1-ton axles and with a high steer arm on the passenger side and the Reid Racing knuckles installed on the ends of the King Pin axle. The modular joints were the perfect solution for me.

10. We still needed to adjust the tie rod slightly to get 1/8-to-3/16 of toe-in on the tires, and we had to turn the drag link adjustment collar to centre the steering wheel – all easily done with the new Currectlync steering in place.

11. New straight beefy steering components will last Brian a lot longer than the stock parts did.

13. The top shot of the steering arms on the top of the knuckle with the drag link end mounted up from the bottom. The Currie Currectlync modular rod end mounted on top of the Reid Racing knuckle end. JUNE/JULY 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 29

Founded as a gathering of like-minded off-road enthusiasts, Expo has grown into a massive celebration of overlanding, and attracts an ever-growing number of exhibitors anxious to show off their latest equipment. While the initial impression may be that gear and toys take centre stage, there is still a fantastic social and educational aspect to the event. Over 170 courses and presentations are held throughout the weekend on topics such as wilderness first aid, vehicle recovery, adventure travel photography, driving skills and trip destinations. Each evening, you’ll find ‘happy hours’ at sponsors’ booths and there’s even a weekend-long Overland Film Festival.

lagstaff, Arizona sits at almost 7,000 feet and only a short distance from the Grand Canyon. Historically important as a cross-country stop on Route 66, today Flagstaff is a playground for outdoor enthusiasts of every description. High enough for skiing and in close proximity to some of the most spectacular scenery in the country; it’s no wonder why almost 70,000 people call it home. Each year in May, that population grows as overlanders and offroad enthusiasts from around the world converge on Overland Expo

Attendee’s vehicles are an exhibition in themselves. Hundreds of 4x4s and motorcycles of every type can be found among the trees at Fort Tuthill. Most common were Toyota and Jeep products, with many of them towing off-road-specific trailers. At least a dozen exhibitors were there to show off new trailer products, including suppliers from as far afield as Australia and South Africa. This growing segment is getting more interesting every year, as manufacturers try to one-up each other in the features department. Before each Expo, finalists are chosen from among attendees for the “Cool Ride” contest, with the winner decided by popular vote on the last day of the event. Overlanders who frequent sandy and barren expanses without trees in sight may find this indispensable, but the system is also equally useful when wrapped around a large rock or a tree in place of normal tree saver straps. In addition to their nearly 20,000-lb breaking strength, the straps are also inherently redundant when used in any configuration. 1998 Camel Trophy Land Rover Discovery Perhaps the inspiration for modern overlanding, sponsored treks like the Camel Trophy involved somewhat attainable vehicles traversing seemingly impossible routes in exotic locations around the world. This particular Discovery is an original competitor and belongs to off-road instructor and expedition leader Ken Cameron, who drove it in the Camel Trophy in the late 1990s. Fitted with the 300Tdi motor and 5-speed manual transmission combination that was never seen in North America - and sporting only 27,000 km on the clock - it could be the most interesting Discovery in this part of the world. Land Rover heavily modified the competitor vehicles with roll cages, high-intensity lighting, underbody production, winches, extra fuel tanks, communications equipment and the ability to ford very deep water through the use of engine snorkels and drivetrain breathers. Once called the “Olympics of 4x4,” the annual Camel Trophy event ceased in 2000 after 20 years, leaving many fans to wonder if something would eventually come along to replace it. FJ Company Restorations Iconic in so many ways, the original FJ-series Land Cruisers are getting more difficult to find and even more scarce when seeking one in original condition. Enter The FJ Company of Florida and their ground-up restorations. Customers can pick from several models and option out their vehicle with upgrades like a modern stereo, fuelinjected motor and more. 2018 Land Rover Discovery TDV6 – landrover.ca Land Rover’s staple luxury SUV is almost 30 years old and has recently been re-launched as a somewhat smaller unibody model. Although extremely luxurious and packed with technology features, you shouldn’t ignore the off-road capability under its soft exterior. Dynamic chassis control and fully automatic drive modes allow you to transition between pavement and heavy-duty off-road conditions with relative ease. Features like hill descent control, automatic centre and rear locking differentials and air suspension with up to 11 inches of clearance will help you tackle almost any obstacle. In a test drive on LR’s tough Overland Expo off-road course, we were surprised at what was possible - including several obstacles that left us with one or even two wheels off the ground. 20-degree side hills and deep cross-ditches were no problem, and built-in real time off road data helps you stay within limits. The two 3.0L power plants (a 340-hp supercharged gas and 258-hp diesel featuring a massive

443 lb-ft of torque) propel the Discovery easily on steep hills and freeway on-ramps, and offer towing capability to boot. But don’t let the trendy exterior lines fool you: the new Discovery can wade in three feet of water, and has almost 30 degrees of approach and departure angle capability.

CONCLUSION: As the weekend comes to a close, the hundreds of vehicles at Overland Expo begin to disperse. For those who drove a long distance to be in Arizona, it means the second half of their adventure is just starting – there are dozens of scenic off-road routes that lead to Flagstaff. Some attendees have come from one or two states away, others from places far away like Australia and China. Overland Expo is popular not just because it’s a destination and social gathering, but because it signifies the start of the off-road travel season. If you’re working on a new project and need to test out the latest products or just need some inspiration for an existing rig, you’ll certainly find it in Flagstaff. 38 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

Interesting to see it from the winch’s perspective.

Anybody willing to help these two out?

Looks like someone got themselves in a little deeper than they needed to.

Just a good ol’ fashioned high-centre on a boulder.

How many guys does it take to pull a Jeep out of a mud pit? We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool RPM Media hat! 46 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017
