All-New 2018 Ford Expedition FX4 Will Be Most Off-Road Capable Expedition Ever
T
he Ford Expedition is not traditionally a name synonymous with off-road capability, but when the all-new 2018 version launches with the optional FX4 Off-Road Package, that may just change. Firstly, the entire Expedition lineup will feature a new high-strength, aluminum-alloy body and redesigned high-strength steel frame that helps it shed up to 300 lbs. When the FX4 package is selected, the Expedition receives a number of off-road-oriented upgrades including a patented electronic limited-slip rear differential, off-road tuned shocks and all-terrain tires, all of which work together to allow the Expedition to greatly increase its off-road prowess. Additionally, the FX4 packages adds seven skid plates, 18-inch cast aluminum wheels, chrome running boards, and new rubber floor liners. In order to provide you with the best driving characteristics for a given driving situation, the Expediton features a Terrain Management system that lets users select from seven special drive modes including normal, sport, tow/haul, eco, grass/gravel/snow, and sand. Renderings of Upcoming Jeep Wrangler Pickup Released Online JLWranglerForums.com is routinely one of the go-to places online when it comes to any sort of news regarding the upcoming 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL, and is now up to it again by releasing rendered drawings of the also highly anticipated Jeep Pickup (JT). The new pickup will obviously be based on the new Wrangler JL/JLU and these new renderings are reportedly based on what they’ve seen in the most recent spy shots. On first glance, the pickup carries a lot over from the current Jeep Wrangler JK and overall, looks great as it combines the looks and capability of a Wrangler with the practicality of a pickup. The trucks is expected to be officially unveiled by Jeep a year after the JL Wrangler is introduced, which is expected to be in the fall of this year. JLWranglerForums.com has a great track record with these types of things and although it’s not exactly what we will see from the production version, it’s a good bet that it will be darn close.

More Ford Bronco Concept Renderings Appear Online We told you earlier this year about Ford’s plans to bring back the Bronco sometime around 2020-2021, and at the time, little-to-nothing was known about the vehicle other than a few renderings surfacing online. Now, a couple of months down the road, we are still a long way out from the anticipated launch date and probably won’t know concrete details of the revived model until way down the road. However, that doesn’t have to end speculation regarding the Bronco, which recently saw more concept renderings hit the web. Bronco6g.com has recently released another rendering of the Bronco, but this time in a four-door model. It’s a safe bet that a four-door Bronco would be a hit as it provides that extra room needed for passengers or gear and allows it to function better in everyday driving situations. While the drawing looks great and leaves us salivating at the thought of a Bronco return, we are still a ways away from actually seeing the vehicle and hearing any confirmed details. We will keep an eye out going forward, and report on anything we come across.

Mercedes-Benz Officially Unveils X-Class Mid-Size Pickup We told you a few issues back about the new Mercedes-Benz mid-size pickup that will launch at some point this year in other markets outside of North America. We would like to be able to tell you that Mercedes has changed its mind and will be offering the truck to those of us here in North America, but that still seems unlikely at least for the near future. What we can tell you, however, is that Mercedes has recently officially unveiled the truck (named the X-Class) at a special event in Cape Town, South Africa. The truck shares its platform with the new Nissan Navara mid-size truck currently being offered in other markets, but is likely to come here using the Frontier nameplate. Not much has changed since we showed you the

concept, as it still looks fairly similar to the Navara with some Mercedes styling on the front and back, but even more details have now emerged. Three trim levels will be offered including (in order) Pure, Progressive and Power, and the interior of the truck will boast quite a few Mercedes styling cues giving it a truly luxurious feel. Powering the truck will be four engine options including two 2.3L inline-four diesel engines, an inline-four gasser, and a top-of-the-line V6 diesel that will push out 258 horsepower. The X-Class will hit European, South African, Australian, Argentinian, and Brazilian markets and we can only hope that somehow, they will eventually be offered here. I
t’s not often that I get to drive something that really turns heads. A new Porsche 911 GT3… No. McLaren P1? Hardly. This is something very special indeed (and something that’s just about impossible to find on the streets of Vancouver.) It’s the Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer. Those who know the name are already familiar with its quirky Vanagon-on-steroids appearance or its military heritage, and some may even know that it sports a completely unique and innovative chassis design that has never been replicated, or that it shares a shred of heritage with the aforementioned German sports car brand thanks to its air-cooled motor. This particular example is one of two Pinzgauers owned by Ruedi Pletscher of Vancouver Island, who brought both of them home in the early 2000s and set about restoring them, right down to bringing each nut and bolt to better-than-factory spec. Ruedi, a now-retired aircraft mechanic who came to Canada from Switzerland over 30 years ago, was kind enough to lend me this Pinzgauer after I lamented at the sale of my Land Rover Discovery earlier this year. He quipped as I was handed the keys “I’m glad you’re finally choosing a real 4x4.” How right he was! The Pinzgauer was developed in Austria in the late 1960s as a replacement for several light-duty vehicles and to compete with American Jeep imports. Military and other customers demanded an extremely capable 4x4 that would serve several purposes, such as ambulance, troop carrier, flat deck truck and other roles.
The Steyr-Puch Pinzgauer... a truly unique and capable beast
The hard-top (K designation) models that Ruedi built both started life as radio trucks. After many months at the design stage, the first models rolled off the line in 1971. The result was one of the most capable and reliable off-road vehicles ever imagined. A unique powertrain design has the motor, transmission, transfer case and axles all rigidly connected to each other via a central “spine” on which the body rests. This spine also houses driveshafts and other moving parts. Each axle has independent suspension with portal hubs, but is designed to pivot at the differential. This results in a sort of independent-solid axle. Each diff is connected to a hydraulic actuator that locks it fully, and the transfer case has a low gear that allows the Pinzgauer to use full engine power at only 4 km/h. This means that it can tow upwards of 11,000 lbs – although not at anywhere near highway speeds. Many would not expect this little vehicle to be so capable, but thanks to efficient use of space with cab-over configuration, some models can also carry up to 10 passengers. The clever design of the Pinzgauer as a highly capable and well-equipped rig makes it the perfect off-road travel vehicle. I had the pleasure of taking a couple of trips this summer, covering over 1,200 km on dirt and pavement, from the far reaches of the British Columbia interior to the other side of Washington state’s Cascade range. What I found was that the Pinzgauer welcomes anything you throw at it – if you’re patient, that is. Pavement is not a problem (although 80something horsepower means you’re hiding behind trucks in climbing lanes) and at 110 km/h – maximum speed – it handles remarkably well for a 45-yearold truck with no power steering. Just make sure you have comfortable ear protection because there’s no insulation and you’re basically sitting on top of the engine! For the first leg of my trip, I set off with some friends toward the Bridge River valley. All of the roads to Bridge River country are standard bumpy logging roads, but the independent suspension soaked up all but the harshest ruts. We managed to play around on the (currently dry) bed of Carpenter Lake, which BC Hydro has let drain in order to do some maintenance. There are lots of great sand pits and ruts to explore. Camp setup was easy thanks to the built-in storage in the back of the Pinz, and access to the interior through the markedly square doors. The flat load spaces left me wondering why contemporary “sport utility” vehicles aren’t designed for utility.

in the US for 25-year old imports. They have been manufactured on and off for military use for decades and more recently sported a modern VW TDI powerplant in the same familiar chassis, and are especially useful to British forces who have proven them in desert service over the last 15 years. Their legendary capability combined with relative reliability make them a popular choice for militaries and emergency services all around the world. When I first met Ruedi in 2002, I’d never heard of a Pinzgauer before, but check out Instagram today and you’ll find a few “famous” ones around the world that have been kitted out for sustained off-road travel. It’s no wonder that people of all ages and from all walks of life are attracted to the Pinzgauer’s unique and so-far unmatched design. Park anywhere and it only takes a few moments for someone to strike up a conversation by asking “so what the heck is this and where is it from?” My second weekend in this machine was a 700-km round trip with friends to Plain, Washington for the ever-popular Northwest Overland Rally. There, we met up with Ruedi in his other Pinzgauer, a matching 712K 6x6 model. This one is his pride and joy and has been equipped with a speciallymounted Warn winch, roof-top tent with custom roof rails, and ARB fridge/freezer (among other mods). Seeing his 6x6, you’d never guess that a Pinzgauer wasn’t meant for overland travel! These rigs together were quite the sight, and attracted more than a few onlookers throughout the weekend. It’s not often you find such a rare vehicle at an off-road show - let alone two that have been meticulously and lovingly restored. Of course, these rigs get used often and both spent a lot of time being driven around the treed obstacle course set up by Overlanding BC at the Rally. Because of the suspension design, it’s quite easy to teeter a Pinzgauer on two wheels when crossing some obstacles, which is a great sight for spectators (although it’s not a risk for getting stuck at all.) The Pinzgauer has been growing in popularity in North America in recent years, probably due to rolling eligibility AUG/SEPT 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 13

OFF-ROADING: ST. ANTHONY DUNES
Dunes-Day Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
I
got hooked on sand dunes fun quite a few years ago, with my first trip to the Oregon sand dunes. That trip took me to Florence on the Oregon Coast and the Siltcoos Dunes. I’ve been back many times since to all the four major ATV areas along the Oregon dunes in an array of vehicles. I’ve always wanted to visit some of the other known sand dune riding areas, but many are quite far from me here in B.C. I’m sure you will have heard of Glamis, also known as the Imperial Sand Dunes, or even Pismo Beach. Past these popular spots, there are actually many more that are not as well known all over the USA.
Almost every year, we have been going to Moab for the Easter Jeep Safari. Our route takes us from B.C. though Washington, Idaho (twice), Montana then into Utah. In the bottom portion of Idaho, we typically stay the night in a small town called Idaho Falls on this trip. Not far from Idaho Falls, there is a sand rec area called St. Anthony Dunes. Despite all the times I’ve stayed so close, I’ve never had a chance to visit the dunes – this year that had to change! Glen and I decided to split off from our travel companions and head down a day early, and then meet them in Idaho Falls to complete our trip to Moab. The information on-line on the St. Anthony Dunes was very scarce and much of it was not very accurate. Some sites said ‘no street registered vehicles on the dunes,’ others said dunes were closed for winter animal migration from October to April. This year, EJS and Easter itself was late and that pushed us past that April 1st date just in case the closures were correct (which it turns out were only half correct). Directions were also not very good but dune sites did say an Idaho OHV permit was required or one from another state. As I typically have an OHV sticker for going to the Oregon dunes, I was covered, however Glen was not. I had called the Sand Hills Resort, a campground that backs the dunes, and asked a few questions and the campground owner said that the dunes were open year round, only a small portion towards the tree-lined hills were closed in the winter months, and that Jeeps and in my case Toyota, street vehicles were very much welcome on the sand dunes.

helped me on the phone and right into drifting sand dunes right to, and over, the paved road. Finally! We dropped air pressure (while wrapping ourselves in jackets - it was April after all, and the dunes are at 5,000 ft above sea level) to the required single digits, 8 PSI in the front and 6 PSI in the back for the Tacoma TRD Pro I borrowed from Toyota Canada, and around
On a trip like this, you have to carry your own air source. I mounted this ARB air compressor in a toolbox and used alligator clips to attach it to the battery. As it was mid-afternoon when we got to the area, we drove into the town of St. Anthony and straight into a gas station to inquire about an OHV sticker. The weather was very overcast and we even ran through a snowstorm that coated our vehicles with ice on the way there. Visibility wasn’t very good, so seeing what was over 10,000 acres of sand wasn’t very easy. In town, we were met with strange stares for our OHV sticker request and no one was able to point us to the dunes. Either we hit the wrong crowd or it’s a conspiracy to keep these hidden dunes to themselves! At the end of the main strip of the small town, a sign pointed us towards the dunes – finally a sign! While still without an OHV sticker for Glen, we were equipped with sand flags and decided to wing it when we got there. That sign was the last one we saw, however as the clouds lifted we spotted the flowing sand hills in the distance! Twists and turns on back roads brought us to a local “road no access” sign… another attempt to foil our chances at the sand dunes! We drove on past the sign and ran right into the campground that
6 PSI at all four corners for Glen’s JK on 35s. A local police officer drove by us as we were sticking our flags on our bumpers, waved and carried on. We were good to go it seems – hammer down! As it turns out, we took the back way into the dunes, not the main Egin Lakes entrance, which turned out to be just fine. Besides two dirt bikes, we had every inch of the dunes to ourselves and due to some recent rain, the dunes were smooth and flat and every track we laid down in every direction belongs to us. It was just like being the first person down your street or gravel road after a nice fresh snow fall and we made the best of it.
This one was a little trickier. Many of the low sand bowls were filled with lava and at low tire pressure, we needed to be careful of these sharp rocks. 22 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
The chunks of exposed lava did make for some good poser shots with the Tacoma I was driving.
It was Glen’s first time on the sand dunes and it didn’t take long for him to figure out how to get up and down the bigger hills. This area has a lot of underlying lava rock and we did need to watch the bottom of the sand bowls with our low tire pressure and the odd stand of tree stumps sticking up like Greek ruins. We spent a couple of hours sliding up and down the hills challenging each other’s high marks with tight turns on the steep hills and generally driving around with stupid big grins on our faces – sand dunes tend to do that to you! Now that we know that – Yes! Street-legal vehicles are allowed on the dunes here. Yes! We do need an OHV sticker from Idaho or another state with an OHV sticker program and will order them
If you plan to go: There are a couple of camping areas right on the dunes, seasonally closed. As mentioned, while the Sand Hills Resort was not quite open for the season yet, the owner was very helpful on the phone when I called and answered all my stupid questions. We drove by – it has direct sand access and lots of RV and camping spots. https://www.sandhillsresortrv.com/ Also: https://www.idahodunesrv.com/index.php Egin Lake BLM campground. While we ran out of time and were not able to find this site, it’s at the main staging area for the dunes and also had close sand access. It’s first come, first serve for camping. Directions to St. Anthony Sand Dunes: Take I-15 north to Idaho Falls. This was early season and the St. Anthony dunes are at 5,000 ft. We were in jackets most of the day. It rained earlier in the day, so all the sand was smooth. All the marks you see were from us – as you can see we were having some fun!
on-line before coming next time. Yes! Like other dunes you need a flag on your vehicle at least 9 feet in the air. No! The locals are not conspiring to keep these dunes to themselves – come and enjoy for yourself, the sand was awesome. No! the dunes are not closed in the winter but there are some areas that are, but still plenty of play area all year round – we will be back next year with more time to spare.
From St. Anthony: St. Anthony exit (exit 345). At stop, take a left onto N. Bridge Street and go over the highway. Go a few blocks and look for 600 Rd. N or N. Parker Rd. - take a left. There is a sign for the dunes at this turn – keep in mind signage after this turn is very poor. Drive about 5 miles until the four-way stop and the ‘road closed’ sign – turn right here, this also takes you to Sand Hills Resort, so just look them up and follow their directions! A left will take you to Desert Oasis and Egin Lake – though the route is not well marked. BLM Egin Lakes Access from Rexburg: Take the North Rexburg or the Parker-Salem Highway exit off Highway 20. TERAFLEX SWAYBARS
TECH Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
I
’ve used torsion bar sway bars on a few of my builds in the past, and wanting to keep all of my suspension components matching, I went with Teraflex bars for the CJK8. Teraflex actually expands on the “twistable”-style swaybars by offering three versions of their sway bars. The Trail Rated, which is what I chose, has a single rate and is not disconnectable in any way. The centre bar twists with articulation, while providing side-hill stability, as the bar can’t bend in the middle. Typically, these types of sway bars offer better roll control, but are not as stiff as, say, a stock fixed sway bar. The next Teraflex swaybar is called the Single Rate. It has a stiffer rate for street and fully disconnects with a knob on the end for trail use, to get maximum articulation off-road when disconnected.
The front Teraflex sway bars come in three flavours. The Trail Rated which is always connected (this is the bar I used). Single Rate, which is stiffer when connected and you can disconnect fully, and the Dual Rate, which is fully connected for best road manners, second stage like the Trail bar, and then fully disconnected.
The third Teraflex swaybar is called the Dual Rate. It offers both of the features of the first two. Stiff street bar, then the next stage a softer trail-rated bar, then fully disconnected for full off-road articulation.
While having the disconnectable option would have given the CJK8 more suspension choices, as I am running very large tires and pushed the axle ahead two inches, I felt that the knob might get in the way of the tires. So, I stuck with a style I am used to and comfortable with, and along with that, I have triple-bypass Fox Shocks that are also adjustable, so plenty of suspension control already.
STEP 1
STEP 2
The brackets for the JK sway bars bolt inside the crash bar found on the front of the frame.
In my case, the front differential is a Dana 60 with high steer arms. I needed to raise the sway bar as high as I could for clearance over the re-positioned steering.
STEP 3
STEP 4
I still used the Teraflex brackets; however, I removed the entire crash bar replacing it with a stronger front crossmember. In this case, the Teraflex brackets are welded to the frame in place of the crash bar.
With the torsion bar inserted through the two brackets, the bushings are drifted into the brackets. Note the flat side on the bushings... not for JK use, but they do come in handy for TJ applications, so it doesn’t matter their orientation in this case.
24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
STEP 5
STEP 6
You may notice only three threaded holes on the cast sway bar arms. Due to the fact I moved the suspension forward two inches...
... I needed to trim the ends of the arms and remove one of the link positions. Basically, the further you move the axle links up the arm, the stiffer the sway bar rate becomes, so any can be used.
STEP 7
STEP 8
The torsion bar installed in the two brackets, less the crash bar. Keep in mind, the bar would be inside the stock crash bar and not visible if installed the designed way. In place of the stock crash bar and the tubular crossmember in front of the engine, you can see my new boxed cross member for the grill and rad mounting, and below it is a piece of round tubing welded in as a stiffener.
I found the fit of the arms extremely snug over the bars. I used a chisel to spread the bars slightly and they slid over the splines a lot easier this way.
STEP 9
STEP 10
The front sway bar links are length-adjustable and can twist with suspension flex. Below the bar with links in place.
The links are mounted to the outside of the sway bar arms; the top bolt threads into one of the three position holes, while the bottom installs with a bolt through the sway bar tab on the axle. AUG/SEPT 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 25
STEP 11
STEP 12
Unlike the three front options, the Teraflex rear sway bar only comes in one stiffness. As you can see, it uses the same bushings in the front, but the bracket has a flat side on it for positioning. The same sway bar arms are used as in the front, but the links are a fixed length.
The sway bar mounting brackets bolt into the bottom of the frame using existing frame-threaded inserts, and the bar runs over the top of the frame. Even with the Warn rear bumper brackets in place, there was plenty of room for both components.
STEP 13
STEP 14
After fitment, I chose to weld the Teraflex brackets to frame. This isn’t necessary; it’s a nice tight fit between bar resting on the top of the frame and the bolts through bottom – just some peace of mind for me. Below shows torsion bar running across the top of the frame rails.
the the the the
Like the front, the arms are angled for clearance around stock frame brackets. Two bolts go through the arm to clamp it onto the splined torsion bar. The bars are the same left and right; however, one peeve is that the cast-on Teraflex name ends up upside-down on one side.
STEP 15
STEP 16
The rear sway bar is angled downward more, to allow for compression clearance of the body, though we are lacking the box on the CJK8 yet, so there will be a bit more weight back here to come. The arms have four positions to pick from for the end links - the shorter you make the connection, the stiffer the sway bar rate will become.
Once on the splines, the arm is clamped on with a pair of bolts, and an end cap makes everything look nice and clean.

Side-By-Sides Revolutionize the Market Segment, Making Way for a Robust Aftermarket
Putting the “P” in Powersports Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko, photos courtesy of the manufacturers
aggressiveness, and hardcore performance that consumers require in order to explore a variety of terrains.
I
When it comes to historic performance, monstrous names like Uni Filter and K&N come to mind—the latter of which actually got its official start during 1969 in desert racing and later produced the original washable, reusable air filter. Now, “we have a few racers that we sponsor in the UTV sector: RJ Anderson,
ndisputably, the powersports market continues to expand its consumer reach annually, with tens of thousands of units sold across the ATV, side-by-side (SSV), motorcycle, powerboat, personal watercraft (PWC), and snowmobile categories. In particular, four wheelers have taken the world by storm—UTV multi-purpose, UTV work, and UTV sport account for the top three segments within powersports. As author Clint Simone stated in the July issue of SEMA News, these purchases are “equal parts fun and capable.” Evolving from a utilitarian design originally intended for commercial purposes to a reputable staple within the off-road segment, SSVs offer aftermarket manufacturers a fresh platform for product innovation. Today, these units are more versatile than ever before, featuring advancements that make them ideal for a number of landscapes, jobs, and competition. If the truck and Jeep® aftermarket taught the industry at large anything, it’s this: with such widespread appeal comes a desire to personalize, from cosmetic upgrades like custom paint and vinyl decal applications to increased power output and storage capacity. While customization is evident across the spectrum of powersports, its popularity is running wild in the SSV category. OE manufacturers within the powersports segment continue to flirt with accessories development. And why wouldn’t they if it’s going to generate additional revenue, especially at the point of purchase? But with heightened safety and liability concerns to contend with, its aftermarket counterpart is the arm of the business that’s really been able to deliver the kind of quality, 32 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

“First and foremost, safety. We see upgrades via riding style performance harnesses, better seats. They want to be secure going at a high rate of speed. Aftermarket doors that ensure drivers and passengers are fully enclosed is a big deal, too,” said Bertlanga. Other safety products include racing helmets, goggles, gloves, and roll cages. According to some shops below the Canadian border, aftermarket tires, recovery, suspension, performance (intake, exhaust, programmers), exterior protection, storage, and lighting are very common as well. Next to upgraded tires that showcase their worth on every spin, a winch is the single most-used product. Quite literally, new trails can’t be blazed without one. Mitch Gutheries, and Katie Vernola,” said Ross Bertlanga, Brand Manager for K&N Automotive/Powersports and AEM Inductions. Likewise, others such as Fox Shocks and Maxxis Tires have been influential in attracting new blood into the lifestyle. Nowadays, the powersports segment is linked closely with economic stability and, therefore, thrives on the discretionary spending levels of consumers who, strategists estimate, have a household income of $100,000+. In addition to the unit itself, Bertlanga discussed how the average buyer easily drops at least $8,000 in aftermarket accessories to take the purchase to the next level. So, the big question becomes, what’s selling?

KING-PIN AXLE
TECH
1. Reid Racing makes a full line of heavy-duty knuckles for an array of axles. These high-strength ductile castings are thicker in all the right areas over any stock knuckle.
Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
I
f you start to get into harder wheeling, inevitably the word “tons” will come up when it comes to axles. There are companies like Dynatrac, Currie, Spidertrax, and Teraflex that all make custom 1-ton axles for direct placement into Jeeps, but even some of those could stand the odd upgrade. For the CJK8, I decided to build a pair of take-out axles from a 1-ton truck this time, rather than go the easy “order and install” route. I wanted a front King Pin-style axle – and few aftermarket companies go this route due to the age of those axles – rather they tend to use ball joint front ends with easy access to Ford factory knuckles, ball joints and brakes from modern trucks. I didn’t expect to save a “ton” of money over aftermarket axle assemblies, but this way, I could add some parts I really have liked in the past. First up. Weak knuckles. The axle knuckles are what turns your rig, steers your rig, holds your tires on, holds your brakes and contains your axle shafts – pretty important pieces. When it comes to heavy-duty, nearly indestructible steering knuckles from Reid Racing are the kings. Their orange steering knuckles are available for a wide array of axles, from stock Jeep Wranglers to the Ford kingpin axle I am working with. These tough castings are made with high-strength ductile iron , are thicker and heavier, and have cast-in steering stops and extra bolt holes for high steer arms when relocating the steering and drag links up out of harm’s way. I also opted for their bronze upper kingpin bushings, as the steering arms we were using from Ruff Stuff had the fifth hole for the mounting bolts and a threaded load bolt in the middle, rather than the spring and poly bushing under the cap of stock axles. Another upgrade I did was to the spindle nuts. You might not think 36 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
much about the locking rings that hold your bearings in the inner hub, but I’ve had issues in the past with stock-style bend-over tabs, or the three-piece lock rings coming loose. The Stage-8 Fasteners stop the wheel bearings coming loose right in their tracks with a unique lock tab and ring clip design. As we were changing to a 35-spline outer stub shaft from the factory 30-spline shaft, new hubs were also needed. Here I turned to Yukon Gear. Their unique lock plate design uses large square teeth to firmly engage the lock plates and hold your axles in 4x4. In the case of a smashed lock tab on the ends of the hubs, the hubs will default to lock which is a much better option than not having 4x4 in the case of a rock getting into your wheel and breaking your hub. All of these pieces can be easily purchased for an array of axles and all offer much-needed strength if you really plan to get out and use your “tons” to their fullest. 2. A stock kingpin end has four bolts holding the cap for the tension spring on the top. As many people use these bolts to hold a high steer arm onto the knuckle (like I was doing), Reid adds a fifth bolt which ads 20% holding strength for the arm.
4. The bronze bushing has a spiral groove machined in to allow grease to flow around the bushing.
3. Reid also has an upgraded kingpin bushing made out of Bronze. The stock bushings are nylon. These bushings are designed to work with a high steer arm that uses a load bolt to hold the front end tight.
5. This is the load-bolt for the high steering arms. The bolt is hollow and has a grease nipple at the top to allow grease to be topped up in the bushing. The bolt is used to add preload to the kingpin stud and keep the steering tight.
6. The bronze bushing slides into the knuckle over the upper stud and uses a roll pin to stop it from rotating inside the knuckle. All the steering effort should be on the kingpin stud. AUG/SEPT 2017 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 37
8. There is a better solution and that comes from Stage-8 Fasteners and their X-Lock spindle nuts for Dana 44 and Dana 60 axles. The multi-piece design uses a pre-bent tab assembly that inserts in multiple locations in the steel plate, then a snap ring holds the tab in place. Simply put – they will never come loose once set.
7. Five studs are used for the high steer arms; if not using high steer, a factory cap and spring would go in this place and only four bolts would be used. 10. As this axle is going into a JK-based vehicle, I needed to use the lower position for the tie-rod. The high steer arm is being used for the drag link to the steering box.
9. Once the threaded ring sets the preload on the axle bearings, the snap ring holds the assembly together. 12. The locking dial assembles in two pieces, holding the tension spring behind the inner plate. The combination of these parts makes this about as strong as you can make a Dana 60 axle end.
11. As we upgraded to Cromoly 35-spline axles (stock stub shafts are 30-spline) we needed a new set of locking hubs. These Hardcore locking hubs from Yukon Gear uses large plates to lock together, and a spring to hold the plates open when wanting to run in two-wheel drive. 38 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

Looks like someone got in a little deeper than he was expecting. We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool RPM Media hat! 46 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
