Ford Reveals Upgrades for the 2019 F-150 Raptor
F
ord has announced that it will be upgrading the F-150 Raptor for 2019 with suspension enhancements that will allow it to perform even better off-road, and all-new Recaro sport seats inside. In order to enhance the Raptor’s already impressive internal bypass shocks, Ford worked directly with FOX to develop a new electronically controlled Live Valve technology for the new platform that is able to continuously adjust damping in real-time. The setup utilizes sensors in the suspension and body to maximize comfort, handling and bottom-out resistance. This will allow the Raptor to make the most of its 13-in. of suspension travel in the front and 13.9in. in the rear as it uses the automatically varying suspension rates. When paired with the Raptor’s Terrain Management System, the Live Valve suspension technology can increase the truck’s high-speed off-road capability while also promoting a smooth on-road driving experience. Another new feature for 2019 is the Trail Control system which helps the driver take on challenging conditions by operating like cruise control for low-speed, rugged terrain as it automatically adjusts power and braking to each individual wheel. Trail Control can be activated at speeds up to roughly 32 km/h depending on the driveline position. Also, no matter what sort of driving situation you OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
find yourself in, the all-new Recaro sport seats provide aggressive support with great bolstering in both the seat back and cushion. Finally, a couple of new exterior features or options for the 2019 Raptor include a few new colours, an enhanced rear applique and new available beadlock-capable wheels. The truck is set to go on sale in late 2018.

Suzuki has recently launched the all-new, completely redesigned 2019 Jimny off-road-oriented vehicle, but unfortunately for those of us in North America, it will only be available in Europe and Japan. The Jimny was branded the Samurai when it was available in North America in the 90’s but has not been sold since 1995, as it joined the long list of cool, off-road capable vehicles that are only available overseas. This new Jimny features a rugged exterior that is of a somewhat boxy shape, and is highlighted by round signature headlights, 15-in. alloy wheels, and wheel arch extensions and side sill covers which protect the body. Under the hood of the new Jimny is a 1.5L engine which delivers ample torque at low RPM and is paired to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. In terms of actual off-road capability, the Jimny incorporates what Suzuki calls the four essentials for serious off-roading - a ladder frame, the three angles (approach, ramp breakover and departure), three-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs, and part-time 4WD with low-range transfer gear. The ladder frame structure provides a solid base for the suspension components when driving off-road and also helps protect the vehicle body. The 37-degree approach angle, 28-degree ramp breakover angle and 49-degree departure angle allow the Jimny to climb over obstacles and steep hills without scraping the underbody or bumpers. The rigid axle suspension is able to thrive in off-road situations, while the part-time 4WD system with low range transfer gear can be easily switched from 2H, 4H and 4L by a shift lever directly connected to the transfer case. Additionally, when two wheels diagonal from each other lose traction the Jimny’s brake LSD traction control automatically brake the slipping wheels to redistribute torque to the other side. Given the fact that Suzuki doesn’t even sell automobiles in Canada anymore, there is zero chance we will see the Jimny on our side of the world, so enjoy the photos you see online because that is likely as close as you’ll get.
GMC Announces 2019 Sierra Elevation GMC is continuing with the launch of the next-generation Sierra lineup by announcing the new 2019 Sierra Elevation. The Elevation gives us our first look at the double cab, which is basically a typical extended cab with doors that open the right way, which is what the Elevation is offered in. The truck is available in two- or four-wheel drive and although GMC didn’t say that it will be exclusively offered in Double Cab, there was no mention of any other configurations in the release. The Elevation sets itself apart from other Sierra models by featuring monochromatic door handles, bumpers and grille surrounds. Black exterior accents are featured throughout including in the grille insert, tow hooks, side window trim and standard 20-in. aluminum wheels. New high-intensity LED headlamps incorporate Cshaped “light blade” signature lighting elements, and C-shaped LED elements in the taillights are also standard along with LED fog lamps. The truck features the Traction Select System at the twist of a dial, which allows the driver to choose from preset modes designed for distinct purposes or conditions. These modes adjust transmission shift points, throttle mapping and other systems to best suit the situation the driver is currently in. The Sierra Elevation is also available with the X31 Off-Road package which includes unique suspension tuning with Rancho shocks, locking rear differential, Hill Descent Control, protective underbody skid plates, dual exhaust system and Auto Trac with low range gearing, all topped off with all-terrain tires. The Sierra Elevation is available with a number of new engine and transmission configurations that deliver the perfect blend of power and capability including the all-new 2.7L turbocharged engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Also available starting in 2019, the Sierra Elevation will be available with the also-new 3.0L turbo diesel inline-six-cylinder engine. The 2019 GMC Sierra Elevation will arrive in showrooms later this year.

FEATURE: NORTHWEST OVERLAND RALLY
Wherever I May Roam... Overlanding in the Lower 48 Hellwig’s F-350 SD with a SherpTek rack that carries a fridge, stove, tent and enduro bike with ease.
Story and photos by Jason R. Sakurai
A
phenomenon to many Americans is a Canadian right of passage called overlanding, and it’s becoming big business in the States. Adventure travel specialists, once previously more generic 4WD shops, can now be found throughout the Pacific Northwest, California, the Rockies, and along the east coast from Maine all the way down to the Carolinas. Fueled by the growth in outdoor recreation and camping, adventure travel is seen as an evolution of both activities, where the emphasis is on preparedness and extended stays in the wild. Although there are a pair of Overland Expo events that are massive de facto vendor shows with an impressive number of vehicles in the surrounding areas, we ventured to the North West Overland Rally (NWOR), held June 28 – July

U.S.-made ActionTrax now offer these studded recovery tracks. 1, 2018, in the beautiful Cascades, two hours east of Seattle. A much more family-friendly event, the NWOR is not surprisingly organized by Ray Hyland, an affable Canadian who has achieved a unique balance between the commercial aspects of such a gathering, and the camaraderie of an oversized overland expedition.

A great example of bringing this community together are the Friday and Saturday night campfires, a kumbaya moment when partici pants gather for the opportunity to win valuable prizes from all the vendors at the event.

The most fun overlanding? Bringing your friends along like the owner of this 4Runner did. Diversity in the makes and models of vehicles used in adventure travel are as varied as the owners themselves. In general, the overland group is better educated and more affluent than the norm, but they range in age from seasoned veteran overlanders in their 60s, to Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and even Gen Zers in their early 20s. While
ubiquitous Jeep Wranglers are preferred, so are Toyota and Lexus vehicles good platforms on which to build. Take a look at the cross-section of rigs we saw at the NWOR, and see if you don’t agree that overlanding is as much about imagination and vision as it is where you expect your vehicle to take you.

Post-War Rarities
A 1946 Willys CJ-2A Jeep Loaded with Farm Jeep Options Story and photos by John Gunnell
A
1946 Willys CJ-2A Jeep loaded with Farm Jeep options was the centre of attention at the 2015 Off-Road Success Centre that was part of that year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas. Omix-ADA and Rugged Ridge sponsored this display of collectible Jeep vehicles and the 1946 Jeep with the farm equipment added really stood out as something historically interesting. Willys-Overland, the company that made the CJ-2A Jeep, had been interested in manufacturing equipment for agricultural market for many years. Way back in 1918 or 1919, company founder John North Willys bought the Moline Plow Co. which already owned the Universal Tractor Company. Fast forward to the early to mid-1940s. During World War II, Willys cranked out thousands of military Jeeps for the Army, Navy and Marines. But, the company figured the war wouldn’t last forever and that old Army Jeeps would flood the market in the postwar years and hurt its sales of new models. One solution to the problem was to open a new market by creating versions of the four-wheel-drive Jeep that could do double-duty farm work as a small truck and a tractor. The result of the company’s advanced product planning was the Farm Jeep model with a hydraulic lift, drawbar, prop shaft guards, heavyduty springs and a variable-speed belt-driven governor installed at the factory. A second model, called the Jeep Tractor, added a power take-off, a front bumper weight and a radiator chaff screen. The fielduse-only Jeep Tractor lacked front shocks, a spare tire, a windshield, a fuel pump vacuum booster, a tailgate, lights, door curtain holders, an oil filter, a speedometer and a horn. Factory-built Farm Jeep (FJ) or Jeep Tractor (JT) models were offered as 1951 or later CJ-3A or CJ-3B Jeeps. While factory records 20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018

indicate that none of these units was actually built in 1951 or 1952, at least one CJ-3A designated as a Farm Jeep has turned up in the hands of a Willys collector. A good number of older Jeeps—such as the Omix-ADA unit--were also turned into Farm Jeeps or Jeep Tractors by purchasing part or all of the equipment package and installing those pieces. No one knows exactly how many CJ-2A and earlier CJ-3A Jeeps were retrofitted as Farm Jeeps or Jeep Tractors. In 1953 and 1954, factory-built Farm Jeeps had a special serial number prefix—453GC2—that differed from the standard CJ3B prefix of those years, which was 453GB2. In 1953, a Farm Jeep Power sales brochure was issued by the company, now known as Kaiser-Willys Close up of the beltdriven buzz saw.
thanks to corporate mergers. The orange, black and white brochure illustrated a number of ways the CJ-3A Jeep could be used in farming applications. The Farm Jeep specifications listed in this brochure included a standard governor and engine-driven gear-type Pesco hydraulic pump, as well as an optional Power Take-Off.
The 1948 Jeep with Farm Jeep equipment was seen at the SEMA Show. AUG/SEPT 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 21
The Farm Jeep was suitable for Row crop cultivation: A rotary hoe allowed working 40 to 60 acres a day safely with operating speeds up to 12 mph. With its brakes locked, the Farm Jeep could deliver belt power in excess of 30 hp on the pulley. The brochure pointed out that the car-based Farm Jeep was more comfortable than a conventional tractor because it had heavy-duty leaf springs, double-acting shock absorbers, a cushioned seat with a back rest, a windshield and a completely hooded and weatherprotected engine. A cab and heater were optional.

In 1953, the CJ-3B Farm Jeep underwent Nebraska Tractor Test No. 502, which was part of a series of tractor tests conducted by the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture. The Test recorded the data from a series of horsepower tests, while the Farm Jeep was driving a belt or pulling a drawbar.
Dual tires are mounted both front and rear
Nebraska Tractor Test No. 502 also recorded speed, torque and fuel consumption. The observed maximum belt horsepower for the Farm Jeep was 35.23, The observed maximum drawbar horsepower was 25.40 with the Jeep moving at 4.11 mph with 8.32 percent wheel slippage. Only 77 of the CJ-3B Farm Jeeps were built before they were dropped as a factory model. Willys continued to advertise, promote and sell the 3B to farmers. Even after the CJ-5 came out in 1955, the stripped-down 3B economy model continued to find agricultural buyers on a tight budget. The 1946 Willys CJ-2A owned by Omix-ADA is outfitted as a Farm Jeep. It is one of 214,760 of the CJ-2As built. It has a 134-cid Willys “Go-Devil” L-head engine, a T90 three-speed transmission and a Dana 18 transfer case. Up front is a Dana 25 axle with a Dana/Spicer Model 41 axle at the rear. CJ-2As had an 80-inch wheelbase and 122.75-inch overall length. Farm Jeeps were 59-inches wide and 69.38-inches high (with the top up) and weighed 2,137 pounds. The Omix-ADA Farm Jeep has a front PTO winch, an engine-driven air compressor, a General Electric 6WD 200-amp arc welder in the passenger seat, a side arm mower bar on the driver’s side, a Canfield folding wrecker made by Canfield Tow Bar Co., of Detroit, and a Newgren Buzzsaw with table. The dual tires front and rear provided stability and traction when the Jeep was used in farm fields. A 200-amp General Electric arc welder is mounted on the 1946 Farm Jeep.

Hauling it Right! We help you choose the right trailer for your powersports habit

the technical specs of such exhilarating units, they’re of no use without a proper trailer to get you to where you’re going.
T
With a sea of brands and products from which to choose, a back-to-basics approach will help narrow down any selection to the very best options for your personal situation. Haulmark®, whose philosophy is to Get More, Go Further, breaks it down into four essential categories: brand reputation, construction, suspension, and warranty, with industry veteran Bryan Grigsby of Driven Performance Brands adding intended use, weight and vehicle tow ratings, as well as budget.
here’s nothing like putting a little hair on your chest, eh? Some prefer a shot of Crown, while others opt for a pure adrenaline rush. Can’t we choose both? You’re right, the whiskey probably isn’t a great idea whilst operating one of these highlycapable machines, but it was a thought worth thinking. For those of you slaying it in the sand dunes, crawling Moab, or ripping through a new Canadian trail on one of these bad boys, this feature is for you. Because as thrilling as it is to tear into
Built to Last Brand reputation and quality construction go hand-in-hand. “How a trailer is built goes far in determining how long it will last and whether it’s appropriate for your needs,” said Haulmark®. An integrated systems approach makes sure all parts are combined in such a way that guarantees maximum performance, as opposed to trailer options assembled from a random collection of parts. Also important, “the frame supports your entire trailer and is usually built from I-beam, tubular, C-channel, or L-shaped aluminum or steel. Generally, the more metal in the frame, the stronger it will be. So, a tube will be stronger than a C-channel, which will be stronger than a L-beam,” continued Haulmark®. A tip from Featherlite Trailers, “Look for heavier I-beams that are closer together and span the entire width of the trailer. Be sure that all of the components—floors, side walls, and roof—are extruded to fit together
24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
“Aluminum is today’s choice because trailers made from this durable alloy are lighter and easier to tow and allow for more payload capacity. A lighter trailer can save wear and tear on the tow vehicle and increase fuel efficiency,” commented Featherlite Trailers. “Aluminum trailers also withstand corrosion better than steel trailers and, with just routine care, traditionally hold their value much better than steel counterparts,” said the company. In fact, after years of use, many Featherlite owners have reported selling their units for the same price as, or even slightly more than, the original sticker value. When choosing to purchase an aluminum trailer, preferably one with an all-aluminum unibody construction, make sure to check, double check, and then triple check. “Many companies
like a puzzle and then welded together, not just welded together as individual pieces. This adds safety and solidity to the trailer’s structure. It also adds to the overall finish of the trailer.” Whatever trailer type you choose, ensure the frame is sturdy enough to transport the planned cargo. Wall construction is another important factor when shopping for an enclosed trailer. Are they insulated, how close are the studs, and is a corrosion-inhibiting moisture barrier being used? These are important considerations for snowmobile or Jet Ski trailers. “Look for a ‘pierce and roll’ rivet system so no rivet fully pierces into the roof, reducing opportunities for water leakage. The last thing you want is a wet interior. Unfortunately, standard riveting can create hundreds of holes in the roof of a trailer where water can infiltrate if rivets or openings become worn. This ‘pierce and roll’ rivet system used in the aircraft industry is just one example of a smart design that delivers down the road,” added Featherlite Trailers. The exhaustive list of questions before purchase continues with what features are included to keep precious cargo secure? Ask about ramp styling, as well as E-tracks, D-loops, or other devices for securing a load. “Find out if wiring runs through rubber grommets in the walls and/or roof to reduce wear and the likelihood of short circuits. Check if the locks and hinges are attached with tamper resistant hardware,” added Haulmark®. In addition to safety and security, “Is it a 5- or 6-lug? What about the deck—is it full metal, wood, or a steel diamond-plate? Consider straight vs dove tail and drive-over vs drive-between fenders,” said Grigsby, whose greatest advice is to research extensively before signing on the dotted line.
produce ‘aluminum’ trailers that are only aluminum sheeting over a heavy steel frame, which will rust if exposed to the elements,” added Featherlite Trailers. Therefore, even if the steel is painted or powder coated, things like rocks and debris, or the constant flex of the trailer unit as it travels, can erode the outer coating and, as Featherlite mentioned, make the steel vulnerable to moisture. A Smooth Ride Just like the suspension on a vehicle—the better the quality, the smoother the ride. But in this case, an upgraded suspension protects the trailer itself, the cargo, and the tow vehicle from excessive shock. This makes for a far more comfortable towing experience all around. “It is advisable to buy a trailer with a higher-performance suspension if you plan to tow often, transport heavy loads, tow as part of your business or carry valuable cargo,” said Haulmark®.
Minimize Weight Aside from general trailer construction, Grigsby warns to be very cognoscent of weight ratings, as highway patrol, at least in the U.S., is actively pulling haulers over to issue tickets for being overweight. Remember that weight ratings don’t just include the trailer itself, rather the total load. One trend, he said, is a shift toward aluminum-based trailer companies that provide a stronger, but much lighter product. AUG/SEPT 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 25
with staying power and partner with the right dealer to secure said brand in a trustworthy environment with a proper warranty. BigTex Trailers, AzTex Trailers, Rice Trailers, Sky Trailers, Ultra Santek, Fleetwood, RageN, Winnebago, Weekend Warrior MVP, and FunMover are only a few of the many examples of tried-andtrue brands that offer a number of options from entry level all the way to luxurious. Vehicle Tow Ratings Think about it: whatever powersports trailer you decide to pack up and take home, whether it be an open or enclosed option, it’s likely on pavement for 200-300 miles at a time. After which, it must be durable enough to survive another 5-6 miles, at the very least, on unpaved roads that are often poorly maintained at best and an off-road obstacle of their own at worst. Leaf springs and rubber torsion suspensions are two factors to keep in mind. “Leaf springs are the traditional suspension systems. They are widely used in vehicles and trailers of all sizes, including trucks and semitrailers. While less expensive than most other types of suspension, leaf springs give a bouncier ride. Plus, metal-to-metal, inter-leaf friction results in more noise and faster wear. These features can impact the handling, especially on sharp corners and when the trailer is not fully loaded,” the company added. Overall, Rubber torsion suspensions provide an improved ride quality in comparison. For example, torsion suspensions act as a better cushion when encountering bumpy travel. “Unlike leaf springs, which are connected to each other by an axle, rubber torsion suspensions work independently so road impacts on one side of the trailer are not transferred to the other. This provides a significantly smoother ride for the cargo, trailer, tow vehicle, and driver,” continued Haulmark®. The Right Brand with the Right Warranty It goes without saying that a trailer—even an entry-level flatbed utility option—is an investment. So, invest your time in a brand
26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
A proper flatbed utility trailer, travel trailer, or enclosed toy hauler is useless without the right rig doing all the hard work up front. Actually, it’s a great way to kill a tranny, blow a motor, or damage an axle and, subsequently, ruin a perfectly good n’ reckless weekend getaway. Intended use, intended use, intended use, reminds Grigsby. “Number one and number two, select something that fits your needs and budget. Number three, if the budget allows, swing for a trailer that gives you room to grow as your hobby does,” he added. “That all comes back to intended use, doesn’t it?” Communicate to the dealer what recreational vehicles you’ll be towing, what you’ll be hauling them with, as well as what kind of locations you’ll be frequenting and how often. “Bottom line,” said Grigsby, “the most important lesson here is to do your homework.” Once it comes time to shop ‘til you drop, never feel limited by what’s on the lot and don’t be bullied into a purchase that doesn’t fit your needs. Now, we reckon it’s about time to make your opponent suck some dirt (or mud, gravel, sand—whichever you prefer). Just promise us that you’ll leave the Crown back at the trailer…

FEATURE: JURASSIC PARK VEHICLES
Jurassic Park Trucks and SUVs are Collector Items Story and photos by John Gunnell
T
his started out as an attempt to put together a feature story about a clone of the Jurassic Park movie Jeep that we saw at the 2017 Iola Car Show (www.IolaOldCarShow.com). It turned into a larger, more interesting research project about Jurassic Park vehicles in general.
The Jurassic Park Jeep at the Iola show belonged to a member of a statewide group called Wisconsin Star Cars that is made up of people who own replicas of TV and movie cars.“ Jurassic Park” was a 1993 movie about a dinosaur theme park where regenerated dinosaurs escaped and terrorized park visitors. Based on a book by the late Michael Crichton, “Jurassic Park” became a successful media franchise that led to the creation of four film sequels, video games, toys (including toy trucks), games, T-shirts and other clothing, posters, McDonald’s cups, amusement park rides and other products and services. After photographing the copycat Jurassic Park Jeep at Iola 2017, two things happened. First, we ran into Wisconsin Star Cars members at another show and learned more about their group. Second, the organizers of the Iola show selected “Lights, Camera, Action” (TV and movie cars) as their 2018 theme. So, naturally we thought we’d be able to find the movie Jeep at the show and pull it aside for photos.
Toyota replica seems to be based on the Jurassic Park book. 30 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
Unfortunately, the Jeep didn’t come to the 2018 event, but
research takes place on the fictional islands of Isla Sorna and Isla Nublar near Costa Rica. As might be expected, SUVs were needed to traverse the jungles of Isla Nublar. Two basic types of vehicles were used. Utility Jeeps were used by the employees and park personnel, while sport utility wagons carried park visitors to what were supposed to be safe rendezvous with the cloned dinosaurs.
another Jurassic Park vehicle did. However, instead of being a Jeep Wrangler done up like the “employee cars” in the film (see below), it was an older Toyota Land Cruiser with an entirely different paint scheme and different graphics. This got us interested in looking beyond the Jeep and digging up research on all of the Sport Utility Vehicles used in both the Jurassic Park books and movies. In the novel, California-based “International Genetic Technologies, Inc.” (INGen) discovers a way to clone dinosaurs. Most of InGen’s
In Crichton’s novel, the SUV used was the Toyota Land Cruiser. The book specified that they were manufactured in Osaka, Japan, and were custom-made for use in Jurassic Park. They were special lightweight Land Cruisers with electric engines. They also had a spare tire on back. a special antenna on the roof, night vision goggles in the glove box and walkie-talkies for communication. A CD-ROM drive in the main console used a computer monitor coordinated with a motion-sensor system to update dinosaur information. In the garage at the Visitor Center were two lanes of Land Cruisers that could transport all the visitors in an endless loop throughout the park, running on tracks buried in the roadway. During the Isla Nublar incident in the book, the BB4 and BB5 Land Cruisers got involved. They passed safely by several dinosaurs and then turned around. After the park’s security system was shut down

things changed as well. There were no longer 24 vehicles (only two) and only one was destroyed by the T. Rex. The other was found abandoned. The Tour Vehicles in the film had a self-navigation system. They had leather interiors, nightvision goggles under the seats and a drinking tap that supplied visitors with water. Road flares, flashlights and brochures were stored in the trunk. They were electricallypowered and had a top speed of 12-20 mph. When EXP 5 was upended by the dinosaur, the headlights continued to function even though the supposedly electrified Explorer was off the track. by a character named Nedry, the two Land Cruisers stopped near the T. Rex paddock and BB4 was attacked by the Tyrannosaurus Rex. BB5 was later attacked as well and thrown to the side. It landed in a tree and then crashed to the ground. By the time the movie version of “Jurassic Park” was released, a product placement deal had been inked with Ford and the visitor or “Tour” vehicles in the movie became 1992 Explorer XLTs. Other
Several Explorer “prop” vehicles were created and some of them were props for damaged ones. After the filming of the first movie, EXP 5 went to a Universal Studio location in Florida and EXP 4 was put on display at Universal Studios in California. Two additional Explorers – EXP 6 and EXP 7 - were seen on a computer program for the tour. An EXP 3 replica was also seen at Universal Studios in Japan. Toyota Land Cruisers were seen in “Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis” and this may have been due to licensing and trademark issues.

FEATURE: WINCHING & RECOVERY
Being Prepared A Starter Guide to Recovery Gear Story by Spencer Whitney
W
e’ve all seen it happen on the trails – someone gets stuck, and a member from the audience offers to help. Too often though, these volunteers will have little-to-no useful winching or recovery skills. They might have seen YouTube videos, or learned a thing or two from their dad when they first started wheeling. But old habits die hard, and trails can be an environment of one-upmanship and drivers too proud to admit that they’re wrong about what they’ve been doing for years. This is why I was surprised to see a picture-perfect recovery a few weeks ago, and on a public road, no less. A pickup truck had veered into a deep ditch and was all but rolled over, and had been rigged up to a passer-by’s Jeep. The winching vehicle was set up with a 2:1 pull off the front bumper, and the operator was wearing gloves and had a proper line dampener draped over the cable. For added safety and stability, he had attached a chain between his rear bumper and another full-size pickup truck. My surprise came from the fact that I’ve seen many recoveries over the years that were poorly executed. Many of them could be considered barely safe, and I’m always sure to stay far away from quick-and-dirty operations like that on the trails. Witnessing this one made me realize that being well-educated in vehicle recovery isn’t just useful knowledge for professional tow truck drivers. Anyone on (and off) the trail – even those without a winch – should know how to use basic gear and practice appropriate techniques. This kind of wisdom is helpful in preventing damage to your 34 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
vehicle, or injury to yourself or bystanders. Even if someone is recovering your rig, you’ll appreciate knowing the basic do’s-anddon’ts of safe vehicle recovery. This article is not intended to be a lesson in recovery. For that you should seek professional help from the organizations and resources listed at the end of the article. There are numerous clubs and businesses throughout the country that are certified, experienced and capable of showing you the “right” way of doing things. Since there are more off-road enthusiasts out there than ever, it’s critical that anyone who feels the need for an introduction seeks out basic education. Even seasoned off-roaders who need a tune up should give it a try – there’s nothing wrong with discussing techniques and trading knowledge with peers.

The best kind of recovery gear is the gear you’ll never actually have to use. That’s not to say that an expensive investment like a winch is totally unnecessary, but if you ever really need it you’ll appreciate having spent the money. Along with all of the following gear, you should keep in your rig a dedicated bag equipped with heavy gloves (leather or welding style are great) and basic tools like a crescent wrench, serrated rope knife and multi-tool. WINCHES Winches come in all shapes and sizes, and in all manner of prices to suit almost any budget. There was a time when two or three domestic brands dominated the market. It was as easy as selecting an appropriate capacity - generally 150 percent of your gross vehicle weight (GVW - that’s the curb weight stamped inside your driver door, plus everything you could possibly add to it) - and wiring it up properly. Today there are multiple types of winches to choose from, and brands out there that really aren’t manufacturers – just clever marketing for generic Chinese-made copies. You should never rely on a questionable winch - you can’t assume that it’s going to perform at the critical moment it’s needed, so one might consider avoiding the absolute cheapest winches out there. Regardless, before you buy a winch and certainly before you hit the trails, get yourself a recovery strap of some kind. There are two basic types – static and kinetic. These are an indispensable part of the recovery ecosystem and have dozens of uses. I have seen straps used to support makeshift shelters in the rain, patch together a vehicle that broke a track rod, and even as a temporary rope swing next to a lake. Most of all they will allow almost anyone to assist with getting you un-stuck STRAPS Static straps (also known as tow straps) are built like a very strong ratchet strap, but often with heavy-duty doubled-up webbing and a loop at each end. They should have a working load limit (WLL)
36 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
of about double your vehicle’s GVW due to the shock loading that can happen compared to a winch. As long as it fits in with all of your accessories – shackles, winch hook, etc – a larger strap than necessary is not a bad thing. They can be wrapped around axles, linked to winches as an extension, or even wrapped around a tree (if designed for that purpose) without worry. Various lengths are available, but getting one longer than necessary in case you need to loop it in half around a vehicle’s axle or tow point is a good call. Kinetic straps (such as a snatch strap) are specifically for “tugging” a vehicle out of an obstacle. Hundreds of stretchable fibres inside the strap’s loose webbing take up the energy of the vehicle pulling on it. This is critical for reducing shock load when pulling someone out with engine power alone, as it will avoid damaging both vehicles. The stretch also allows a running start in order for a vehicle to gain traction and momentum. The down side to kinetic straps is that they are generally only useful for that kind of recovery, and shouldn’t be used to extend a winch line, or be wrapped around a tree. They also are more prone to damage and should be retired sooner than a static strap. Again, purchase one with more capacity than you might need. SHACKLES AND ACCESSORIES Shackles are necessary for almost every recovery technique. As with winches, you will want to avoid any that are of a questionable manufacturing origin. Purchasing good quality shackles is relatively inexpensive and if used correctly, they will last a lifetime. Soft shackles are a newer appearance on the trails, and come in various sizes just like cast metal ones. These must be inspected regularly for wear and could require replacement after just a few uses. The main advantage to a soft shackle is safety – they are light and will not become projectiles if a rope or strap gives way. If you can afford the extra cost of soft shackles, equip yourself with them.
As with anything on your vehicle, recovery gear will require regular maintenance. It’s easy to just stuff your straps and shackles back in the bag when you’re done, so don’t forget to take that stuff out when you get home and give it a good cleaning (per manufacturer recommendations.) Your winch also requires attention on a regular basis. An annual once-over with periodic visual checks will ensure years of trouble-free operation. These practices will build familiarity with the equipment, and the casual environment of not being in a recovery situation will help you detect any problems. The condition of your recovery gear might mean the difference between a stressful trip and a fun adventure; if you’re ever in doubt of anything in your kit, take it as an opportunity to check in with friends and professionals to talk about what’s new and good in recovery gear.
TRAINING LINKS:
Tree savers are short static straps that are reinforced for abrasion resistance. If you live in a region with lots of trees you would want to carry at least two - these can be strung together to go around very large trees. If you are traveling in areas with few trees, or skinny ones, consider a device like the Deadman recovery device. It’s designed to be buried in sand or snow, or draped around a rock, to provide a recovery point. It can also be used as a tree saver. There are lots of other accessories on the market. Some of them are simply flashy items that enhance the looks of your rig. If you can afford to spend the money on them, they are usually of high quality but have features that may or may not be necessary. Ultimately, it’s up to you how much you’d like to spend to be prepared, but the basic kit outlined here is what most people would consider the bare minimum to recover or be recovered.

CLASSIC 4X4: 1987 JEEP GRAND WAGONEER
Fabulously Fancy Four-by-Four Story and photos by John Gunnell
I
n 2017, The Los Angeles Times described the Jeep Grand Wagoneer as being “The ultimate expression of wealth and luxury among oilmen and gentleman farmers.” When it was new, the 1987 Grand Wagoneer featured in this article sold for $24,521. That would equate to about $75,000 in 2018 dollars.
AMC 360-cid 160-hp V8 motivates the fancy 4x4.
The Jeep Wagoneer was simply the first four-wheel-drive luxury vehicle. It was produced by a number of different manufacturers from Kaiser-Jeep to Chrysler between 1963 and 1991. The Wagoneer saw only minor mechanical changes during its 28-year plus production run, which was the third longest run for a specific model in North America’s entire automotive history. In reality, the Kaiser-Jeep Wagoneer of 1963 was the successor to the Willys Jeep Station Wagon designed by Brooks Stevens, of Milwaukee, Wis. That boxy station wagon was introduced after World War II and
marketed as the four-cylinder two-wheel-drive model 463 from 1946 to 1948. In 1949, a four-wheel-drive version designated the 4x463 was introduced for just $291 extra. The first Wagoneer of 1963 helped pioneer the sport utility vehicle concept. In spite of its pickup truck chassis and boxy shape, it was more car-like than any 4x4 on the market. Contemporary 4x4s from General Motors, International Harvester and Land Rover were workoriented utilitarian vehicles with spartan interiors. The Wagoneer had a luxury character that set it apart. The Wagoneer was based on the Jeep SJ platform and at first sported an advanced straight-six engine. It offered features unheard of at the time in any other mainstream four-wheel-drive vehicle. They included independent front suspension, power steering and automatic transmission.
Power-operated front bucket seats were standard. 38 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
In 1981, the Wagoneer line was expanded to three models. There was a base Custom Wagoneer, a Brougham with upscale interior and exterior trim (such as a thin side-body scuff molding with a narrow wood

The Custom Wagoneer was eliminated in 1983 and a new Select-Trac system became standard equipment. A dash-mounted control allowed the driver to change between two- and four-wheel drive. The switch activated a vacuum-activated spline clutch that was built into the front axle assembly. In 1984, the Wagoneer Brougham was dropped and the Limited became the Grand Wagoneer. version was available. This would remain the case until the end of the Grand Wagoneer production under Chrysler. Production was 20,019 units in 1984. An improved handling package was introduced in 1985. It incorporated a revised front sway bar, gas-filled shock absorbers and lower friction rear springs. A total of 17,814 Grand Wagoneers were built for 1985. Starting in the 1986 model year, the Grand Wagoneer received a new four-part front grille and a stand-up hood ornament. An updated audio system became a standard feature and a power sunroof, installed by American Sunroof Corporation, became a factory option. However, the most significant change was the installation of a fully revamped interior including a new dashpad, new instrumentation, new door panel design, shorter nap cut-pile carpeting, new leather seat cover designs and front seats that featured adjustable head restraints. Changes were made to the instrument panel that now featured square gauges and wood grain overlays and contained an improved climate control system. A new two-spoke steering wheel also included new stalks for the lights and wiper and washer controls on the column. The Select-Trac driveline gained a new Trac-Lok limited-slip differential to send power to the wheel with the best traction. There were 17,254 Grand Wagoneers built in 1986. The year 1987 was the 25th anniversary of the Wagoneer. It was also the last year for an AMC Grand Wagoneer as Chrysler took over at midyear. Standard equipment included a 360 cu. in. (5.9L) V8 and selfsealing Michelin “Tru Seal” P235/75R-15 radial tires. The sound system included a new AM/FM electronically-tuned stereo with Dolby cassette and four Jensen speakers. The exterior featured revised wood-grained sides in “marine teak” with new nameplates and V8 badges. On the 40 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018

Does this guy not seem a little too clean for being in a mud pit with a stuck Jeep?
Well, at least he isn’t panicking at all.
Something tells us that they may need a little more help than just one guy pushing.
Doesn’t look like he’s quite stuck yet, but he’s probably well on his way.
Can’t see what’s below, but are we the only ones a little surprised he even got stuck here?
Given how calm this guy seems, this certainly isn’t his first rodeo.
We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool RPM Media hat! 46 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2018
