Interior and Exterior designs remain the same as 2018 except for new dual USB inputs on the audio system. The TRD Pro Package, which can enhance the 4x4 Double Cab V6 TRD Off-Road and 4x4 Double Cab V6 TRD Sport models, now includes a high-mount desert air intake, black chrome exhaust tip and an updated TRD skid plate with a red logo and a moonroof as new for 2019. Aside from that, the TRD Pro package immediately provides even more off-road capability to an already off-road capable vehicle with the additions of Fox shock absorbers, 16-in. black alloy wheels, TRD remote reservoir suspension kit and Rigid Industries LED fog lamps to name a few. Pricing for the 2019 Tacoma begins at $31,525 for the Access Cab 4x2 model and goes all the way up to $56,435 for the aforementioned 4x4 Double Cab V6 TRD Off-Road model with the TRD Pro package. 4WDABC Announces Agreement for New Hut Lake Recreation Area The Four Wheel Drive Association of B.C. (Sea to Sky Region) has recently announced that it has entered into a partnership agreement with the Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. for the Squamish Hut Lakes Recreation Area. The news comes after two years of trying to make this happen, and 4WDABC members Ron Lever, Nicholas Priebe, Tara Joan Priebe, Kim Reeves and Lory Fairfield are extremely happy to see their hard work pay off. Similar to the agreements held of other Recreation Sites in B.C., the club will be in charge of maintaining and generally caring for the entire Hut Lakes area. Both the upper and lower area of Hut Lakes have been a popular destination for advanced wheeling and the new agreement gives the club something new for the members who have outgrown the many beginner sites they currently care for. For more information, please visit the 4WDABC website at www.4wdabc.ca.
All-New Ford Ranger to Have Best-in-Class Payload, Gas Engine Torque and Towing Capability As the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger nears production, Ford has announced that the mid-size pickup will deliver best-in-class payload, gas torque and towing capability. The standard 2.3L EcoBoost will produce 270 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, the latter of which is the most of any gas engine in the midsize pickup segment including some V6 offerings from its competitors. The engine will be paired to a class-exclusive 10-speed transmission which will greatly increase efficiency and provides a unique combination of power and capability. The Ranger is anchored by a high-strength steel frame and robust solid rear axle with Hotchkiss suspension, and can tow 7,500 lbs. when equipped with the tow package and a trailer brake controller. The much-anticipated new truck is set to begin production later this year at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.
Distinctive Off-Roader The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel features a bold design and real off-road chops
Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of FCA Canada and Jordan Allan
“
he 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel is perhaps the most distinctive model in the redesigned pickup’s lineup, T boldly featuring a large vented hood, blacked-out fender-flares and an overall off-road-oriented appearance that really helps it stand out from the rest of its Ram brethren. First introduced back in 2015 during the Ram’s fourth-generation, the Rebel was an immediate success and not long after release, seeing one on the road became a daily occurrence, and for good reason. Although not a true Ford Raptor-fighter, the Rebel features not only upgrades to its appearance, but also to its capability with a 1-in. suspension lift, 3.92 rear axle ratio, skid plates, and 33-in. all-terrain tires. Being that this was my first opportunity to spend some time behind the wheel of any model of the new Ram, I was excited to see how it looked and performed.
As I was a big fan of the overall look of the Ram’s fourth generation, this new version definitely took some getting used to, but I think I’m starting to come around, something that was definitely aided by the new version of the Rebel. I’ll admit that I’ve never been a huge fan of the big RAM-stamped grille but will agree that it definitely suits this model which is meant to be bigger and bolder than the rest. The rear of the truck looks great and the Rebelonly 18-in. aluminum wheels wrapped in 33-in. Goodyear All-Terrain tires further add to its off-road presence. The bold design theme continues inside, as the Rebel takes the Ram’s very luxurious, functional interior and adds distinctive red trim throughout including on the steering wheel, door panels and centre console surround. The seats come in a standard red-and-black cloth two-tone design that features a tire tread pattern on the backs and bottoms, which will definitely never let you forget that this isn’t just a normal Ram. The 5.0-in. Uconnect touchscreen comes standard, while our model featured the 8.4-in. unit which is still short of the iPad-like 12-in. screen offered on other models in the Ram lineup. All-in-all, the Rebel’s interior is easy to get used to and features some great storage space, but I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the dial shifter which seems to sit dangerously close to the volume knob. The new Rebel is now offered in a quad-cab configuration with steel coil springs; however, our test model was much like the previous version that featured controllable air springs and a crew cab configuration. The always great 5.7L Hemi V8 sat under the hood, now producing 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque and a sound that distinguishes it from the rest, and is paired to a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. One of the big things that ups the Rebel’s off-road prowess and sets it apart from the rest of the Ram lineup, is the addition of Bilstein monotube dampers which, along with the air springs, provide the Rebel with 10.8-in. of ground clearance in its highest setting. This will allow you

As I previously stated, this was my first opportunity to drive one of the 2019 Rams and I wondered if the off-road ability of the Rebel might hinder the overall on-road performance, but as I quickly found out, it didn’t. Aside from a bit of noise from the knobby tires, the truck performed exactly like I hoped it would. The electronically assisted steering allows the truck to feel extremely light even in tight, low-speed situations, while the air ride suspension system provided what has to be the smoothest ride I’ve ever experienced in a pickup truck. The Hemi V8 provides tons of pickup and passing
to tackle some pretty rough terrain with ease while still providing a great on-road ride which, let’s be honest, is where a truck like this will inevitably spend most of its time. Although I didn’t have the chance (or courage) to take the Rebel in any serious off-road situations during my time with it, I did have a chance to check out some very rough gravel roads and was amazed at how the truck easily handled it. If I were to find myself in some more challenging terrain, the transfer case’s 2.64:1 low-range gearing and the electronically locking rear differential would certainly be able to handle almost anything I could throw at it. As I mentioned, the Ram Rebel is more like a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro than it is a Ford F-150 Raptor, but is still truly one of the most off-road capable pickups to ever roll off the factory line.
power and is still able to break the rear end loose with a sudden jolt of the throttle which is great if you like to keep things interesting. All-in-all, the on-road experience in the Rebel, and likely all new Rams, is truly an enjoyable one. As I said, it isn’t really fair to directly compare the Rebel to the Raptor, but it’s inevitable that it will happen given that they do share the same overall ideology albeit with very different approaches taken. The Raptor is a truly unique, off-road capable monster and is definitely priced as such, while the Rebel feels more like the truck it was derived from and thus, is likely better suited to everyday use and comes in at a more manageable price point. Our test model came in at just over $70,000 which is probably on the high-end in terms of half-ton pickups, but when you consider just how versatile the Rebel is, it makes the price much easier to justify. 2018 SEMA Award Winners Announced The annual SEMA Awards are given out to the cars, trucks and SUVs that aftermarket manufacturers are investing in and developing products and accessories for. The awards are open to all participating OEMs at the SEMA Show and eligible vehicles must be current or next model year to be considered. For 2018, Ford was perhaps the biggest winner as it was awarded top prize in three categories - the Ford Mustang with Car of the Year, the Ford F-Series with Truck of the Year and the Ford Focus as the Sport Compact of the Year. Winning the 4x4/SUV of the year award for a whopping ninth straight year is, of course, Jeep with the all-new Wrangler, which continues its clean sweep of the category since these awards were introduced back in 2010. For 2018, SEMA added a fifth category for Powersports Vehicle of the year, with the inaugural winner being Polaris with the RZR Turbo S. Ford Ranger Makes Triumphant Return to SEMA Show After a hiatus due to no longer being produced here in North America, the Ford Ranger mid-size pickup made its return to the show, as it gets set to launch early next year. The aftermarket industry made quick work with the Ranger and allowed it to showcase over 150 performance parts and accessories that will instantly put it on the map in terms of the aftermarket industry. Seven customized examples were found throughout the massive show with two of the seven on display in the gigantic Ford booth. The truck was showcased in a number of different ways including a Pre-Runner build, camping build and a military-inspired build, among others. Look for many of the products featured on these builds to be available when the Ranger hits dealership showrooms in 2019.

Hennessey Debuts the 2019 VelociRaptor V8 Hennessey Performance (HPE) made its annual big splash at the show with the debut of the 2019 VelociRaptor V8, which starts life as a brand new 2019 Ford Raptor that sees its stock EcoBoost V6 engine removed and swapped with a specially-built Ford 5.0L V8 that is supercharged to produce 758 horsepower. HPE also modifies the Ford 10-speed automatic transmission, Ford wiring harness, ECU and a plethora of other parts in order to complete the engine swap, which sees the Raptor go from 0-100 km/h in just 4.1 seconds. The VelociRaptor conversion also includes new front and rear bumpers, LED front lights, Stage 2 off-road suspension with a 6-in. lift, Hennessey 20-in. wheels, 37-in. BFGoodrich KM3 off-road tires and a number of Hennessey badges used throughout. Production is limited to just 100 units for the 2019 model year, so if this is something you’d covet, act fast.

Mopar Debuts New Jeep Wrangler Performance Axles at SEMA Mopar has teamed up with Dana to introduce new Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) axles for the all-new Jeep Wrangler JL called the JPP Ultimate Dana 44 AdvanTEK axles, on display in the massive Mopar booth in the Lower South Hall of the show. The axles were installed on the Nacho Jeep Wrangler Concept that was on display at the booth and are set to deliver OEM quality to current-generation
Jeep Wrangler owners. The axles are made in the USA and feature AdvanTEK gear technology that helps reduce gear set packaging with more strength and durability, which allows for a condensed carrier and improved ground clearance. Chromoly 4340 axle shafts, thicker quarter-inch steel bracket mounts, thicker 9.5mm tubes and upgraded 1410 U-Joints also increase durability, while a nodular iron differential cover adds to the rugged appearance. The axles are available now at www.mopar.com

WRANGLER INSTALL
Our WeatherTech Floor Liners, Side Window Deflectors and Hood Protector all laid out and ready to go. The only product you don’t see here is the Cargo Liner which we will get to later.
TECH A
s everyone who lives in Canada knows, it is next-to-impossible to keep the inside of your vehicle clean during these Late Fall/Winter months as we are constantly tracking in dirt and debris caused by the rain and snow. For the most part, OEM interior floor liners and mats are somewhat lacking and don’t give you the kind of coverage you’d hope for, as we found with our current 2-door 2017 Jeep Wrangler JK project vehicle. Although the existing mats did provide some coverage, we figured there had to be a better way, so we reached out to our friends at WeatherTech to see if they could provide some assistance. Luckily for us, WeatherTech was more than happy to oblige and sent us over a set of their FloorLiners for the front passenger area and a Cargo Liner for the rear cargo and passenger areas. These liners are all digitally laser-fit in order to provide a consistently perfect fit, provide you with much more coverage than our stock floor mats, and are easy to remove and either spray or wipe down in order to clean. The rear Cargo Liner also provided a perfect fit and was installed with our rear seat out to provide coverage for the entire rear area, but provided pre-cut holes which allowed us to re-install the seats over top. This 1. As you can see, our stock floor mats provide only adequate protection and will easily become soaked during some harsh winter conditions.
is just one of many options offered by WeatherTech for our Jeep, as we also had the option of having a smaller liner install directly behind the seats and another option for second-row liners. On top of all of that, WeatherTech was generous enough to also supply us with a Hood Protector and Side Window Deflectors, which will give us even more protection and versatility. The Hood Protector features a streamlined look that integrated perfectly into our front end and provides an additional barrier against bugs and debris to maintain our Jeep’s finish. The Side Window Deflectors will allow fresh air to enter and leave the vehicle, while protecting us from the elements at the same time. Both products are made from a durable, yet flexible acrylic, and are sure to provide us with years and years of protection. Once the products were all received, we moved on to the installation process which, thankfully, was a very simple one, and in no time we were ready to take on the elements. Big thanks again to the guys down at WeatherTech for providing us with the products. 2. After removing the stock mats, our new WeatherTech FloorLiner easily went into place and fit perfectly. It became immediately clear that these would provide more protection for our vehicle’s interior carpet and would be much easier to clean.
DEC/JAN 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 25
3. We repeated the process on the other side, and moved on to the rear Cargo Liner.
4. We began by removing the Jeep’s rear seat as the new liner would provide protection to the entire area, and left pre-cut holes to re-install the seat once the liner was in place. 5. Once again, the liner fit perfectly and will provide us with protection for our rear interior carpet which was previously left unguarded.
7. Next it was on to the Side Window Deflectors. First step was to clean the windows and surrounding area and lower the window down half way.
26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
6. The rear seat re-installed easily thanks to the pre-cut holes, and left plenty of liner behind them in order to protect the remaining cargo area.
8. Slide the deflector forward into the window channel and make sure that the edge rests on top of the outer window sill and not down inside the channel.
9. Next, bow the deflector outward and insert the rear edge while leaving roughly a ¼-in. to ½-in. gap at the top. It may feel like the deflector is going to snap in your hands, but you must put some serious pressure on it in order to make it fit. The acrylic material is very flexible and will not snap during installation.
10. Now pull down on the deflector and tuck what’s left outside into the upper window channel, working from the front to the back. Now carefully pull down on the deflector and then roll the windows up in small increments very carefully and slowly. 11. You will have to put some effort into rolling the windows up initially (if they are manual, as ours are), but once you go through it a couple of times, it becomes effortless once again. We repeated the process on the passenger’s side and were ready to move on to the hood.
12. To begin, wipe down and dry the front edge of the hood with a cloth, and then give it another wipe down with the supplied alcohol pads. As you can see even from this picture, the top of the hood already has a few scratches and dings from just regular road debris.
13. Once cleaned, expose 2-in. of the tape liner from each section of the Hood Protector. This will allow you to access the free ends once you go to install. Line up the protector and once you’re happy with the alignment, begin on the driver side on top and slowly pull the tape gently in 6-in. sections. While doing so, apply even pressure to the hood with your hand. Repeat the process for the remaining sections and you are good to go.
Big thanks again to the team down at WeatherTech for supplying us with these wonderful products.

PREVIEW: 2019 EVENTS
4x4 Events for the Entire Family Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko
L
ast year, Off-Road Plus published a feature called “Tread Lightly: Environmentally Friendly Off-Roading.” Its sole purpose was education—to inform the reader what is expected of the community when heading off-road, the various challenges 4x4 enthusiasts are facing nowadays, and what influential groups are doing to balance law and order so we can continue to enjoy wheeling on public lands for generations to come.
One such organization doing good across Canada is The Ontario Federation of 4-Wheel Drive (OF4WD), formed “to represent the interests of the 4x4 community and ensure the long-term sustainability of four-wheel drive recreation in the province of Ontario. We work to achieve this through user education, advocacy work, and cooperative trail management and maintenance programs.” The provincial umbrella organization—comprised of nearly 30 4x4 clubs such as Lake Simcoe 4x4s and individual members—promotes safe and responsible wheeling, protects access to Crown Land under the free-use policy of the Public Lands Act (Ontario), and maintains an inventory of the 4x4/multi-use trails. “As a recognized public land use stakeholder, we actively participate in trails and land use consultations. An increasingly important area of activity for us is in the area of trail maintenance and use management. We have ongoing trail maintenance programs running with other trail organizations (including OFSC member clubs, Haliburton ATV Association, Kawartha ATV Association, and others). Trail and community land clean-ups have been a mainstay activity of our organization,” says OF4WD. While this month’s coverage shifts its focus to a few highly anticipated, family friendly, off-road events across Canada during 2019, remember that none of these events would be possible without respected associations, clubs, and vendors promoting responsible wheeling.
28 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
Therefore, it seems only fitting to kick off this list with a nod of affirmation to a founding group whose leadership encourages camaraderie among an ever-growing 4x4 community, Tread Lightly! practices, ongoing education, and fun for all ages. Camp Northern Lights 17th Annual Charity Trailfest – Ontario, August 15-18, 2019 Mark your calendars for the end of next summer because one of the biggest trail events in the province is expecting your attendance. “The name stems way back to the inception of OF4WD, when it was called Northern Lights Trail Rider Association. The main fundraising event for the federation kept the name over the years, as it is well-known and has been running for over a decade,” said the organization. The weekend is jam-packed with three days of guided trail runs, vendor participation, 4x4 and family-friendly activities, camping, bonfires, entertainment, awards, and even catered meals. Choose from one of over 20 Crown Land trails that range in difficulty from novice to experienced trail riders. Those just starting to dip their toes in the lifestyle can benefit from on-site courses that combine theory and hands-on instruction—from Off-Road 101 to Rock Crawling 101 techniques. Most importantly, the event is about giving back. “Camp Northern Lights raises money for the operation of the OF4WD and through the event earnings, we make a donation to the Haliburton Hospital Health Foundation (HHHF). It’s a way to give back to our trail- hosting community,” said OF4WD. Do yourselves a favour—secure some additional time off and arrive in Ontario a little early to get in the off-road spirit before hitting the trail. Canada Jeep Show – Ontario, August 10, 2019 The week before Camp Northern Lights is Canada Jeep Show. In its sixth year, this event is a self-described “all-breeds Jeep show with proceeds donated to The Hospital for Sick Children, directly supporting the Possibilities Fund.”
Canada Jeep Show draws a crowd, with ample support from attendees and vendors alike. Admission runs about $20 per Jeep but includes unlimited passengers. Registered Jeeps can participate in the Show & Shine event, with many categories for you to compete in: Best Vintage Jeep, Best Modified Jeep, Muddiest Jeep, Best His & Hers Jeeps, Best in Show, and more. The staff wants an inclusive event and therefore promotes, “No Jeep? No problem! Everyone is welcome, with a donation to SickKids.”
& Expedition (A.W.A.R.E), the Coalmont Invasion was created as a three-day weekend devoted to exploring all the surrounding area has to offer enthusiasts, acquiring new skills, and making likeminded friends along the way. Whether a beginner or advanced, ATBE has a skill-appropriate challenge that awaits. Experienced industry professionals host a variety of training seminars so that every trail rider leaves the event more knowledgeable than when it all started.
And trust us, there is plenty to see and do, from an R/C track, a Little Jeepers area, and trivia to an on-site BBQ, door prizes, raffles, and giveaways. Above all else, it is rooted in charity. This past year, the event raised $11,000. “Proceeds from the Canada Jeep Show are donated to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), directly supporting the Possibilities Fund. After only two years, we have raised and donated $18,500,” commented Canada Jeep Show.
In addition to coordinating activities and entertainment for the entire family to enjoy, the group also provides meals and access to camping facilities. Not to mention, sponsors are eager to hand out prizes and giveaways throughout the weekend.
Canadians from across the country gather together for the wholesome family-friendly atmosphere, none of which would be possible without the ongoing support of event sponsors. The 2018 title sponsor was Double D’s Customs, with a number of renowned vendors supporting the cause such as Lake Country Adventure Co., American Fastbacks, Rigid Industries, TrailFX, Rugged Ridge, Fishbone Off Road, and OF4WD, among many others. Coalmont Invasion 4x4 Jamboree – British Columbia, July 5-8, 2019 If the events on this list prove anything, it is this: the off-road community is as generous as it is resilient. With the inaugural 2017 event canceled due to the threat of wild fires, organizers remained steadfast in the year that followed to ensure it would still get off the ground. The result was a successful first annual 2018 Coalmont Invasion 4x4 Jamboree in British Columbia. These events fill up quickly, so what are you waiting for? Mark the dates, submit those vacation days, and make sure to check back next issue for a breakdown of 4x4 events that will challenge even the most experienced off-roader.

FEATURE: MARMON-HERRINGTON REPLICA
Doreen’s ‘Husky Pup’ Duplicating a Legendary 4x4

he late Donald N. Chew’s calling card identified him as a Board Member at-Large for the American Truck Historical Society (www.aths.org), but the Coloradoan was more than that. Chew collected trucks himself, restored trucks for other collectors and had accumulated reams of historical materials about Marmon-Herrington four-wheel-drive Ford truck conversions. He also replicated one of the rarest Marmon-Herrington models. It was Chew’s interest in Coleman four-wheel-drive trucks that brought us to his home. But once we got there, it was a 1937

Ford truck with a Marmon-Herrington four-wheel-drive system that caught our eye. It was one of just a few fully restored units in Chew’s massive truck collection and he soon told us why – it was the only one like it. Marmon-Herrington survives today and its website explains that the original company bearing the Marmon name was formed in 1851 as the Nordyke & Marmon Machine Co. It then specialized in the manufacture of flour mill machinery. As a top engineering house, the company entered the emerging auto industry around 1900. The company first made cars. For three decades, Marmon produced some of the world’s finest luxury cars. A Marmon Wasp won the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911 and also introduced the rearview mirror. A Marmon 16 was the height of luxury in touring sedans. The Great Depression hurt the luxury car market, so Marmon joined forces with Colonel Arthur Herrington, an ex-military engineer, to design all-wheel-drive vehicles. Renamed Marmon-Herrington, the firm won contracts for manufacturing military aircraft refueling trucks, 4x4 chassis for towing light weaponry and some of the largest trucks ever built at the time. In addition to large commercial and military vehicles, Marmon-Herrington recognized a growing market for moderately priced all-wheel-drive vehicles. This demand gave birth to the MarmonHerrington Ford. The installation of commercial truck chassis to all-wheel drive remains the primary focus of the company to this day.
A second page of the ad listed all of the 1937 Marmon-Herrington Four-Wheel-Drive Ford V8 models, calling them “A Great Truck Made Even Greater.” There were four four-wheel models with a maximum gross capacity of 13,200 lbs. and two six-wheel models with a maximum gross capacity of 22,000 lbs. Models and prices looked like this: PRICES (Tax extra) at Factory, Indianapolis, Indiana Model C5-4 (four wheels driving, six tires, 132-in. wheelbase) Model C5A-4 (four wheels driving, six tires, 112-in. wheelbase) Model C5B-4 (four wheels driving, six tires, 122-in. wheelbase) Model C6-4 (four wheels driving, six tires, 157.5-in. wheelbase) Model C5-6 (six wheels driving, ten tires, 154-in. wheelbase) Model C6-6 (six wheels driving, 10 tires, 179-in. wheelbase)

The body sits high over the large 20-inch tires. In 1937, Marmon-Herrington headquarters were located in Indianapolis, Indiana. An advertisement from that year pictured the type of truck that Don Chew owned, calling it the “amazing but true new track-laying tractor. “It whizzes down the road at 30 mph – goes right through three feet of water – and pulls like three elephants!” said the ad copy, which went on to boast about the “amazing facts” associated with the truck. It was powered by the famous Ford “85” V8 and was said to develop “almost unbelievable speed and power, but with the fuel economy of 4-5 miles per gallon gas.” The ad men also bragged that it could “climb steeper grades with ease and turn on a dime with a finger’s touch.” The newly-designed Track-with-Track suspension combined greater tractive power with quieter operation. The ad also mentioned “the cushioning effect of rubber combined with the strength and durability of steel.”

Don Chew worked from elaborate plans to keep the build authentic. The truck owned by Don Chew is a C5A outfitted as a Weapons Carrier for the United States Army in 1937. The Army knew that World War II was coming and put out bids to truck manufacturers for a Weapons Carrier vehicle. Marmon-Herrington decided to use its 1-1/2-ton 4x4 chassis to fill the bill. It had the same 112 (Don always said 113) inch wheelbase as a 1937 ½-ton pickup. For six months, the Army tested the vehicle and raved about its performance. Reports said that it out-performed all the competitors. “It excelled in all its tasks and tests,” said one tester. Besides carrying a load of ammunition, the Marmon-Herrington even pulled the The original C5A test truck never returned from Europe.
gun that the ammo was going in. At this point, the test truck was returned to the factory. On the report, it was noted that, if the truck was disabled on the road, two men could not get it out of the way. And that put the kibosh on full approval. Of course, this was a rather strange criticism, because there was no truck of the type that two men could get out of the way. Army “bean counters” did not like the cost of the C5A and apparently, they looked for excuses to can it. The truck was sent to Belgium and Holland, and both countries wanted to order some if production ever commenced. Unfortunately, the German Army captured the truck. No civilian orders were ever placed either, because of both the Great Depression and the coming of World War II. During the 1980s, Don Chew found two photos of the original C5A Weapons Carrier. Later, he found another. In 1982, Chew spent two weekends with Bob Wallace, who had been a Chief Engineer with the U.S. Army. He showed Wallace the photos and learned more about what he called “a marvelous workhorse of a truck.” In 2002, Chew started collecting the parts and pieces he needed to reproduce the truck. It then took him 10 years to build the exact copy you see in the accompanying photos. He called it “Doreen’s Husky Pup.” Chew never explained that name to us, but we’re pretty sure that someone named Doreen must be pretty proud of the truck that bears her name.

alk into the basement of Larry Maasdam’s rural home near Clarion, Iowa, and you will find yourself in a virtual toy museum. Over 6,500 toys fill the glass-shelf-lined walls. In all, there’s over 150 linear ft. of showcases for toys and the amazing collection, started only 10 years ago, is still growing. Maasdam’s may be the world’s largest private collection of farm toys, tractors and implements, construction toys and trucks. Maasdam and his wife Melanie also own a full-size antique truck that they brought to the 2017 American Truck Historical Society (ATHS) Convention in Des Moines, Iowa. You may have seen their bright red-orange 1929 Coleman truck inside the main building at the big truck show. Coleman trucks were made in Littleton, Colo. The company was founded by G.L. Coleman of Omaha, Neb., in 1923, but it did not start making trucks until it moved to Littleton in 1925. It was first operated as the Coleman Motors Corp. Later, the name changed slightly to American Coleman Co. The first Colemans were 4x4 and 4x6 load carriers and tractors powered by four-cylinder Buda engines. Many sales were made to state highway departments, fire services and the United States Army. In 1928, a 7-1/2-ton 6x6 truck was introduced to meet the needs of logging and oil companies for off-highway work. These trucks used a six-cylinder Buda Model GL engine, a Fuller four-speed 40 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
transmission and a twospeed Coleman auxiliary transmission. One of these chassis was used for a very early aircraft refueling truck. The Maasdam’s truck has Serial No. 2381. It features a closed cab, a split windshield, a stake body that Larry built and a six-cylinder Buda Model BA-6 engine. The Maasdams bought the truck about 30 years ago at a farm sale. At that time it had a fifth wheel and Larry was told it pulled a rock crusher from one gravel pit to another.
The Buda engine is green on its top section and silver gray on the lower end. The carburetor is finished in yellow. A plate on the engine tells a lot about the truck, down to valve clearance settings and spark plug firing order. Maasdam finished restoring the truck about seven years ago, but never showed it much to anyone. “The people around here could not believe it when I took it out of the shed and took off for Des
During the restoration of the truck by a local man and Larry, they put all-new wood in the cab and built the wooden stake body. “The metal body needed hardly any work at all,” Maasdam said in a phone call. “We just had to make the side shields for the engine. I had a parts book that I got somewhere and we just copied the shields out of it and they came out very nice.”
Moines with it,” Maasdam emphasized. “It was the first time the truck was actually seen in public by a lot of people.”
The cab interior is painted the same colour as the exterior with the steering wheel, steering column, pedals and brake and gearshift levers done in black. The interior roof is also black. The bench seat has a black vinyl cushion. An interesting feature is the transverse leaf spring used to support the seat and give a relatively comfortable ride.
Maasdam said that he also owns a Mack pickup truck and a 1923 GMC, but most of his collection consists of vintage construction equipment and lots of toys. He and Melanie are also involved with the Heartland Museum, Highway 3 West and 9th Street S.W., Clarion, IA 50526. PH: (515) 602-6000. Email: HMFClarionIA@ Hotmail.com.

This is more damage than we usually see in this section.
Not a truck or Jeep, but he is definitely in need of a winch.
Where was this guy possibly going? Going to take a guess and say he did not expect to get stuck in there.
Nothing like a little snow wheeling... until this happens.
You may question the vehicle choice for this kind of off-roading, but don’t look past the fact that he took a horrible approach angle.
We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool RPM Media hat! 46 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
