2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Most Capable and Powerful Wrangler Yet

J

eep has unveiled the quickest and most powerful Wrangler ever with the all-new 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 which is powered by the 6.4L V8 engine which is rated at 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. It will be paired to a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and Selec-Trac full-time active transfer case that propels the Jeep from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in just 4.5 seconds. The Rubicon 392’s powertrain combines nicely with heavy-duty wide-track Dana 44 axles, a 3.73 final drive ratio, transmission torque converter lockup control, a 2-in. lift and standard 33-in. tires. This marks the first time in nearly 40 years that a Wrangler will be offered with a factory V8 engine and this version of the 6.4L 392 V8 has been tuned specifically for the Wrangler Rubicon 392. A Hydro-Guide air intake system includes a tri-level ducting system with a series of drains, including a one-way drain in the air box that separates water away from the engine’s incoming air. This allows it to traverse water up to 32.5-in. deep even if a bow wake were to wash over the hood. Off-Road Plus with Sand and Rock modes will adjust throttle, transmission shift points and traction control for peak performance on higher speed passes on sand terrain, as well as during low-speed rock crawling. Selec-Speed Control manages vehicle speed while in 4-Low without requiring throttle or brake input and is activated using a button on the dashboard and can be adjusted using the Electronic Range Select shift control. The Wrangler Rubicon features Bronze wheels that measure 17- by 7.5-in. and are beadlock capable with an optional black locking ring available. The 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 goes on sale in the first quarter of 2021. OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

Big Honkin’ Truck GMC Unveils the 2022 Hummer EV

I

f you had told me when we bid adieu to the last (non-military, of course) Hummer in 2010 that the brand would be reborn as an electric pickup, I probably would have said you’re off your rocker.

However, times have changed, and now that we’ve officially been introduced to the GMC Hummer EV, it seems like a perfectly logical move because what would have sounded like an unequivocally outlandish notion back then, has become not quite the norm, but a very real future today. Rivian, Bollinger, Tesla and somewhat less-officially-but-still-officially Ford have already all brought their ideas for an EV pickup to the table and so General Motors had to pull up a chair. They’ve done so in a big way with the reveal of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. It’s not a heavy-duty truck, not a light-duty truck (indeed, in the absence of any official towing or hauling figures, GM wouldn’t even really tell us under which traditional truck category the Hummer would fall closest to), but rather a “Supertruck” which is a title that GM pretty much came up with all on its own volition.

Story by Dan Heyman, photos courtesy of GM Canada

And indeed, why shouldn’t they have? Just look at the figures: 1,000 horsepower. 11,500 – no, there isn’t an extra “1” in there – pound-feet of torque depending on how you’ve equipped your truck. Four different models as GM is championing the GMC Hummer not as a single model, but as an entire line-up: the Hummer EV2 (US $79,995 – Canadian pricing is yet to be released), the Hummer EV2X (US $89,995), the Hummer EV3X (US $99,995) and the big daddy Hummer EV Edition 1 (US $112,595) whose reservations are full and is currently the only way to get that full slug of torque. Not that the other models’ torque figures are modest; they range from 7,400 lb-ft to 9,500 lb-ft, while horsepower ranges from 625 hp to 800 hp. The most powerful of these can complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in under three seconds, something that GMC calls “Watts to Freedom” and no, that’s not a collection of poetry out of South Central Los Angeles. Rather, it’s the name of the Hummer EV’s launch control system. As you do. Of course, as we all know, torque figures are relatively nebulous, as we have to make sure we’re talking about engine torque vs wheel torque, and while GM wouldn’t elaborate, it looks like those are more wheel torque figures, and they actually aren’t that far beyond what traditional super- and heavy-duty pickups make in terms of wheel torque. Now, the Hummer EV has no engine per se (rather two or three EV motors mounted to the axles, depending on trim) so we can’t really talk in terms of engine torque. If we were to compare apples to apples, though, the Hummer EV Edition 1 would make something like 1,300 lb-ft of engine torque. Regardless of all that though, this is one capable

12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

vehicle. Since it was built from the ground-up around GM’s new modular Ultium battery system, it’s actually the stiffest truck they’ve ever made and has all sorts of nifty features to help it along - a quick-lifting suspension system that can be activated to clear large bumps off-road and to get the Hummer un-stuck, air suspension, electronic locking differentials, Multi-Pro Tailgate first seen on the GMC Sierra pickup, and how could we forget the “CrabWalk” feature? Basically, CrabWalk is like a rear-axle steering system taken to the nth degree (well, the 10th degree, actually, as that’s how much each rear wheel can rotate) that allows the vehicle to move diagonally to get around obstacles and gives the Hummer EV the same turning circle as a Chevrolet Sonic compact.

And then, there’s the charging. It is, of course, DC fast-charge capable but able to withstand a 350 kW charge rate, which is currently the fastest you’ll find from public chargers, and the Porsche Taycan is the only other EV out there that can make use of that current. That will give you 160 km of charge after just 10 minutes of charging; a full charge, meanwhile, returns an estimated 560 km of range. Of course, it should come as no surprise that it comes with all manner of interior tech to make you feel like you’re not driving a hulking truck, but a bonafide, futuristic EV. There are a total of two display screens inside – a 13.4-in. infotainment display, and a 12.3-in. gauge cluster display – that can all be customized by the driver or will do so automatically depending on which of

DEC/JAN 2020 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 13

the five drive modes (Normal, Off-Road, Terrain, Tow/Haul and MyMode, which is driver customizable) you’re in. There’s even one-pedal driving, and if it works similarly to how it does on the Bolt, it forces the EV motor to operate in reverse to not only charge the battery, but also to allow drivers to come to a complete stop without ever touching the brakes. There are even removable roof panels, so you can essentially turn your Hummer EV into a t-top style convertible; anybody who knows Hummers knows they come in a variety of body styles and GMC is trying to tick all those boxes right here. They’re doing this because if you’re going to release a whole new range of vehicles, there has to be a reason for that to exist. It has to appeal to a broad spectrum of customers, and while at the end of the day, the Hummer EV is a big, honkin’ truck with a big footprint and ride height to match, there really looks to be something for everyone here. Indeed, the discontinued Hummer line-up moved pretty far away from the HMMWV military truck, and while in all likelihood the costs of re-starting a whole brand weren’t feasible – hence running the Hummer EV under the GMC banner -- the variety presented here really is the next best thing. You will have to be patient, however, if you want one of these beasts; they won’t be coming to any markets outside of the US until 2022. Which is interesting because you just know that by then, the competition mentioned earlier will have also brought their trucks to market and what was once a unique segment will all of a sudden be quite the busy place. Interesting times, indeed.

2020 Land Rover Defender Off-Road & 2021 Defender 90 Preview Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover and Rovalution Automotive

L

ong before it was revealed in 2019, the idea of a “new” Defender was making waves among Land Rover die-hards. How could Jaguar Land Rover replace such an iconic vehicle with anything but a continuation of the classic design – one that hadn’t been radically altered, and only went through a handful of engine and trim updates, during its 68-year history? And what if they softened it so much that it simply didn’t deserve to wear the nameplate? The original Land Rover stood frozen in time for decades, despite the pressure of an ever-evolving automotive industry. It was only in the 1980s that it gained standard features like disc brakes, power steering, and roll-down windows. In fact, Land Rover didn’t even add a second vehicle to the marque until the debut of the Discovery in 1989. The Discovery is widely credited with having saved Land Rover from the turmoil of the British auto industry in the 1980s, giving the company a solid foundation in North America, where it hadn’t sold vehicles for quite some time. But the Discovery wasn’t far off from its Defender relative, having been gifted the same drivetrain shared by the 90 and 110 models. This was a clever cost-cutting measure as the new vehicles would essentially be different only in frame and body and meant that the Discovery could claim to be just as versatile, despite its decidedly roomy and comfortable interior. But as the decades wore on, the Defender slowly ran afoul of safety and emissions regulations, and those creature comforts first allowed in the Discovery eventually made their way to the Defender. A few updates saved it from the chopping block until 20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

2016, when the final vehicle rolled off the assembly line and in to its place in history. Many enthusiasts knew that Land Rover was working on a replacement, and many assumed it would continue the legacy of a body-on-frame solid-axle vehicle. Sadly, this was not to be, and when it was learned that the most recent Discovery would (ironically) lend its platform to the New Defender, comment-thread-battles began all over the internet. All debates aside – the dust has settled, and the 2020 Defender has proven to be a serious off-roader - even unexpectedly excelling in categories like towing. During development, the new Defender was given serious performance challenges, including how it would handle being repeatedly driven in to an 8-inch ledge at 40km/h. Add this to claims of the unibody being three times stronger than a body-on-frame, and you start to see that JLR isn’t just paying lip service to off-road capability. With performance that matches or beats a Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, the Defender 110 is no slouch in rough terrain – and just might have a few tricks going for it. Land Rover has spent the last 20 years developing high-performance computerized off-road systems. With fully independent air suspension, dynamically locking differentials, and wheel speed control via ABS, the Defender is decidedly well equipped for even the most serious trails. If none of that matters to you, then you’ll like the hard figures. The Defender 110 outperforms a Rubicon in both water fording ability (35.5 vs 30 inches) and overall ground clearance (11.5 vs 10.9 inches) and even sports a water level indicator should you decide to get close to its maximum depth. While you might find better wheel travel and crawl ratios in a Rubicon, it’s difficult to argue with the comfort and quietness of the Defender’s unibody design. Defender 90

Most of us with 4x4 vehicles spend an overwhelming majority of our miles on pavement, especially if our 4x4 is also a daily driver – and this is probably the case for Jeep and Land Rover owners alike. With this in mind, and with a more discerning type of 4x4 purchaser emerging in the market, the new Defender is a looming threat to Jeep’s most expensive trim levels. While you can spec it to over $100,000, it’s still quite capable when optioned a little under $70,000. The powerful 4-cylinder base engine may not offer much grunt, but it’ll still get you where you need to go – and for those pavement miles, will save you a few stops at the gas station. Essential options for any Defender build

would include wheel arch protection and the Off Road package, which adds an electronic locking differential and off-road tires. If you’re towing, then the inline-6-cylinder is a must-have, with nearly 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque to unleash on and off the trails. An ideal configuration for dual-purpose urban and off-road use might be the upcoming 90 model, which sports seating for up to six people, offers the same performance as its larger brother, and costs $5,000 less. Any comparison to the Wrangler should not ignore the vast aftermarket support that exists for the Jeep brand’s top seller. In

fact, that’s a very good reason to buy a Jeep, if you’re the type of person who likes to infinitely customize your vehicle. While the Defender does have over 100 dealer-supplied original accessories (including a few overland goodies), you’ll always get better value from aftermarket brands. Luckily for prospective Defender buyers, this is happening. Skid plates, rock sliders and roof racks are already available. Much needs to be figured out with the Defender’s complex front and rear bumpers, but we’d expect aftermarket solutions will appear before too long, allowing a more protected off-road experience along with the usual lights and winches that adorn most off-road rigs.

INEOS Grenadier S

hortly after the original Defender ceased production, British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe attempted to purchase the tooling, design, and entire assembly line from Jaguar Land Rover - who politely declined the offer. However, this didn’t stop Ratcliffe from realizing his dream. Earlier this year the INEOS Grenadier made its debut, with production to start some time in 2021. It sports solid axles, a Defender-like design (which even earned a now-defeated lawsuit from JLR) and a proven BMW inline-6 engine. Is this what the new Defender could have been? The Grenadier may be available in Canada as early as 2022, with a price point somewhere between $55-70,000. 24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

There’s no doubt that electric 4x4s are coming, and the Defender will be no exception. It’s been stated by JLR that the Defender can easily be fully electrified in the near future, with a steppingstone plug-in hybrid already in the works for next year. If this is truly the future of automotive technology, the Defender just found itself another advantage over the venerable Jeep Wrangler. Add to this JLR’s experience with terrain management computers, and you start to imagine that independently-driven electric wheels could finally make the solid axle obsolete. For now, though, the newest Defender is a present-day achievement for a company that could have lost its way in making practical, capable offroad vehicles. In 1948, practicality meant abandoning comfort for capability – today it means the opposite. The new Defender seems to allow room for both, while still honouring the heritage that the Land Rover brand owes its existence to.

POWERSPORTS: YAMAHA WOLVERINE RMAX 1000

Work and Play Story and photos by Stephen Elmer, additonal photos courtesy of Yamaha

Y

amaha’s Wolverine side-by-side has long offered a mix of work and play, and with the introduction of the new 2021 Wolverine RMAX 1000, the brand has pumped up the play factor. This new RMAX model isn’t just a revised Wolverine X2 either, as it receives its own unique frame, engine, interior and suspension. Pumping out 108 horsepower is a brand new 999cc liquid-cooled 4stroke parallel twin-cylinder engine, a nice boost in output compared to the 69 ponies coming from the brand’s 850 powerplant. That 850 was also known for being exceptionally smooth and quiet, and while the former is true of this new 999cc unit, the latter isn’t quite true. But that’s a good thing. This RMAX has a raucous exhaust note and pronounces itself when you step on it, giving it a little of the hooligan DNA it needed to become a trail-eating monster. Maybe more important than the power increase, though, is the way the Wolverine RMAX manages that power with its new D-mode drive selector. Three settings are available (Trail, Sport & Rock Crawl) and each is quite different. In Trail mode, the throttle is set up for good power delivery, but doesn’t make it so sensitive that you end up stabbing it over rough terrain. Turn it to Sport and you get maximum throttle response and power at all times, while Rock Crawl mode does the opposite, taking away all throttle response and increasing 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

engine braking to make sure you can be ultra smooth over rough obstacles. You can also choose to run the RMAX in two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive or diff lock, the latter of which will lock up the front differential. The low-end power offered here is robust, but then add in the computer-controlled brain of D-mode, and the RMAX truly has multiple personalities. You can’t change the weighting of the power steering, but in this case that’s alright, as Yamaha dials in a great steering wheel that offers lots of communication to the driver without being too much of a chore to turn and hold onto. Though all of these new features are appreciated, the most significant upgrade that makes this model something different than the standard X2 is the new suspension.

The model we tested was the Wolverine RMAX2 EPS SE, arriving with FOX QS3 piggyback shocks offering 14.2-inches of travel in the front and 16.9-inches in the rear. This allows you to take rough trails with serious speed, and makes the RMAX a serious adventure machine capable of keeping its occupants isolated well from the trail below. This machine isn’t quite to the level of the whoop-eating sport-focused side-by-sides like the RZR Pro XP and Kawasaki KRX, but it’s not far behind. As the name suggests, the QS3 shocks offer three different selectable settings for firmness, though an upgraded set of active shocks is available that can be controlled from inside the RMAX. And just in case the suspension and tires reach the end of their rope, a Warn winch comes standard on the SE package.

DEC/JAN 2020 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 27

A digital gauge cluster delivers all of your important information, and it tilts with the steering wheel, a handy feature for keeping the screen at the right angle for your eyes. Storage abounds inside with a centre console bin, glove box and small cubby in the centre stack. Small details also make a big difference inside this RMAX, such as the quality of the latches. The glove box uses a push-button opening mechanism, the doors have been made thicker and more solid and even the centre console latch feels automotive grade. There is even lighting in the cupholder, the storage area and in the footwells, much like what you find in a car or truck.

Fresh styling on the RMAX is hard to ignore as well, looking even angrier than it did before, something of a prerequisite in side-by-side design these days. The addition of two LED lights above the functional headlights gives the RMAX great presence and a unique signature. New dimensions make this side-by-side a little more comfortable inside as well, and that’s because this machine is bigger than the standard X2. Total length comes in at 119.3inches, width clocks in at 66.1-inches and overall height is 77.8-inches. Ground clearance offered here is an impressive 13.8-inches, helped by the 30-inch Maxxis Carnivore tires that come standard on the SE model. New seats offer comfortable bolstering and a high riding position, certainly not as upright as a utility machine, but not as laid down as something more sport-focused.

28 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

Adventuring is now well-handled by the RMAX, but the reason you buy this model is its capability to also work, and that’s where the dump bed comes in. Two handles, one on each side of the machine, operate the dumping capability, and this bed is rated to handle up to 600 pounds of cargo. A heavy-duty D-ring is ready in each corner of the bed if you need to tie something down, and just like a pickup truck bed, grooves are made in the bed walls to accommodate wooden dividers. Plus, a two-inch hitch receiver is installed below, capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds. Pricing in Canada starts at $24,299, while the SE model that we tested comes with a price tag of $26,799. There is a fourseat RMAX model available as well and it tops out the price charts, selling for $29,299. Finding the limits of the Yamaha Wolverine X2 850 wasn’t all that challenging, and while that machine is fun to ride, the excitement factor can get old pretty quick. Add in a nice helping of ponies and plenty of suspension travel, and we’re left with the RMAX, a serious contender for being one of the most fun machines on the market that can still haul.

New Powertrain The Jeep Wrangler finally gets a diesel engine option

Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of FCA Canada

A

dding to its already legendary capability, the Jeep Wrangler now offers a diesel engine option in addition to the tried-and-true 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder, introduced with the current JL generation back in 2018. The engine is, of course, the 3.0L Italian-built EcoDiesel V6 borrowed from the Ram 1500 with only a change or two, providing a seemingly endless amount of torque which only further strengthens the Wrangler’s off-road capability. Diesel engines are known for their low-end torque and this is perhaps the perfect complement to the already incredibly off-road proficient Wrangler, as it allows it to provide power very quickly to the wheels, something that comes in handy when say, climbing a steep, rocky mountain face. Rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft. of torque, the EcoDiesel engine is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and this combination not only performs admirably off-road, but improves the Wrangler’s on-road characteristics as well. Although improved over previous generations, the Wrangler has never had refinement or efficiency as its number one priorities. This obviously isn’t, and has never been, the point of a Wrangler; however, this new engine option is certainly a step in the right direction. The aforementioned low-end torque, which peaks at 1,400-2,800 rpm, really is able to get that big, heavy, box-shaped body moving off the line, which is always something that 30 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

jumped out to me when testing previous gas powered versions. The EcoDiesel propels the Wrangler up to speed much quicker and does so while providing better fuel efficiency when compared to either the gas V6 or turbocharged 4-cylinder. Fuel numbers come in at 8.1L/100 km on the highway and 10.7L/100 km in the city which certainly bests the V6 Pentastar, but also somewhat surprisingly beats the 2.0L turbo option that comes in at 10.9L/100 km city and 10.1L/100km on the highway.

The engine is fairly quiet which is probably something most people prefer, but part of me was hoping it would sound somewhat closer to a ‘90s Cummins-powered Dodge Ram and less of a Volkswagen TDI, but it was definitely closer to the latter. That being said, there are still noises emitted that are unmistakably diesel and add to the overall experience of driving a Wrangler, which is something unlike almost anything else. Although I wasn’t going to take my $71,095 (!) Unlimited Sahara test model on to any real extreme terrain as I have done

DEC/JAN 2020 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 31

during some media events in the past, I did make sure to take it to some local logging roads and easy trails to see for myself what differences I could notice between the gas and diesel versions when the pavement ended. The diesel engine option adds nearly 425 lbs. of overall weight but, due to the very substantial

torque increase (180 lb-ft over V6, 147 lb-ft over turbo), it was not noticeable at all. As expected, the Wrangler took on steep climbs with ease, performed admirably as expected in all other terrain and remains the most off-road capable factory vehicle available today. To me, the EcoDiesel is the engine of choice for the Wrangler as it pairs well with what the Wran-

32 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

gler is good at, which leaves only one question - is it worth it financially? The EcoDiesel engine is a $9,190 option which is $9,190 more than the V6 Pentastar (sans eTorque) and $7,195 more than the turbocharged four, certainly a substantial difference. Making that back at the pump will take a long time and a lot of math, so the question of value can really only be answered through one’s personal preferences. To some, this increased capability and improved efficiency would be well worth the nearly 10 grand, and to others it wouldn’t be. I’m not in a place to say what truly represents the better value to each individual buyer, but I will say I’ll most definitely have a stronger preference for diesel-powered Wranglers moving forward, as it only adds to an already cool and capable vehicle. 60 Years Later

History of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 Story and photos by John Gunnell

s a Japanese copy of the famed World War II Jeep, Toyota launched the FJ40 series utility vehicle in 1960. Its 60th birthday was celebrated in 2020. However, the FJ40’s official importation into the United States didn’t begin until 1963. But within two years, the FJ40 Land Cruiser was hands-down the best-selling Toyota vehicle in America.

Cosmetically, the FJ was essentially the same truck until it went out of production in 1983. There were only minor trim changes. It did see a gradual progression of functional improvements and upgrades over the years, shifting from being a bare-bones “rock hopping” sport utility into a wellequipped modern SUV 30 years ahead of its time. The FJ40 was available as an open-bodied utility vehicle or fully-enclosed two-door wagon. (The longer-wheelbase FJ45 could be had as a two-door or four-door wagon). The FJ40 also came as a two-door pickup truck. This version was rarely sold in the United States due to a 25 percent “Chicken Tax” on light duty cargo trucks. As FJ40s reached the secondary market, it became very common for owners to take on engine swaps, most notably replacing the FJ’s stock six-cylinder with a small- block Chevrolet V8. The Chevy engine had more power, but Toyota’s six-cylinder engine was essentially a reverse-engineered 235-cid Chevrolet “Stovebolt Six” engine that was virtually indestructible.

Toyota’s straight six looks a lot like a “Stovebolt” Chevy six. 34 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

The rootin’ tootin’ Jeep/AMC Cowboy Pickup Prototypes Story and photos by John Gunnell

T

he Jeep/AMC Cowboy concept trucks were a reaction to the compact-sized pickups from Japan that were starting to invade the American light truck segment. Three Cowboy concept trucks were actually built and each one was a little different. Only the first one—red in colour—carried Jeep badges. The other two were envisioned as AMC products.

AMC was American Motors Corp., the company that resulted from the merger of Nash and Hudson in 1954. The cars themselves really weren’t popularly known as AMCs until the early 1960s. However, the company name was American Motors from 1954 on. The automaker had luck selling compact cars in the late-1950s when the American economy suffered a recession. But, by 1960, things were bouncing back to normal and demand for compact economy cars began to dwindle. AMC needed new ideas. By 1969, AMC bought Jeep, spending tons of money for that iconic brand, as well as some $40 million to make the Hornet car. To get a return on its investments, AMC hoped to turn the Jeep nameplate and the Hornet model into moneymaking products. The Cowboy pickup was originally viewed as a way to link the Jeep name to the Hornet.

Note the red, white and blue SC 360 badge on the glovebox door of the “Hornet” version of the Cowboy. It has a 3-spoke steering wheel, AM radio and air conditioning. 40 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

Basically, AMC sent a Hornet to the Jeep styling studio and asked Jeep designers to convert it into a truck that would compete with the imports in size, rival the Chevy El Camino in looks and cost less than both of them. The red Cowboy prototype wore the Jeep name. A green and white Cowboy was made from a Hornet SC 360 with a 360-cid V8. The third Cowboy was yellow and had a six-cylinder engine and a Gremlin front end.

It is believed that the red “Jeep” version came first. Unlike all Jeeps being built at that time, the car-based Cowboy was not a 4-wheeldrive vehicle. In fact, AMC grew concerned about the Jeep badging on a two-wheel-drive car and called the other two prototypes AMC Cowboys instead of Jeep Cowboys. AMC later developed a four-wheel-drive system for the Eagle, but in 1971 the cost to do that was not in the budget. In fact, AMC even struggled with the cost of making a single-unit pickup body like the El Camino used. It was thought that such a body would be a necessity to give the Cowboy neat lines. But AMC product planner Jim Alexander addressed the problem. A former designer for automotive and non-automotive firms, Alexander suggested that a good-looking pickup could be created using traditional separate cab and box construction. Alexander was correct. All three Cowboys had a separate cab and cargo box and all three turned out to be winners in the appearance department. As for supporting a cargo box on a unit-body vehicle platform, Alexander came up with the idea of using what was essentially a rear stub-frame to carry the cargo box. An AMC Ambassador gas tank was attached amidships with the spare tire mounted under the back half of the cargo box.

wound up with aftermarket Edelbrock high-performance cylinder heads, but they were probably added some time after AMC sold the truck to its designer.

The green and white Cowboy had green front bucket seats, a floor-mounted stick shift, a radio and air conditioning. There was an SC 360 badge on the glovebox door. The car’s 360-cid V8 also

The reason the Cowboy never went into production was that AMC felt a Hornet Hatchback had a better shot at success in the marketplace. That body style was added to the Hornet model lineup in

At the 2011 World Meet show the owners of the green and white Cowboy prototype were listed as Danna and Eric Thompson, Jim and David Alexander and Ed Bricknell.

The 1971 AMC Cowboy pickup has a separate cab and cargo box and a conventional drop down tailgate with no manufacturer’s name stamped on it. DEC/JAN 2020 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 41

1973 and none of the three Cowboy prototypes was ever manufactured as a mass-production model. Considering how pickups and other light trucks got very popular from the 1970s on, AMC probably made a mistake. The company was always kind of like that, it had a few big hits, but probably as many bad decisions. According to Collectible Automobile (October 1994), Jim Alexander bought the green and white Cowboy from AMC. Then, he and his son changed the early front end to AMC’s 1975 Hornet style grille and sheet metal. They later sold the The floor-mounted shifter controls gear changes of the three-speed manual transmission. It has wind-up windows and dual outside rearview mirrors

car to Jim’s nephew. When Collectible Automobile featured the car, Edward T. Bicknell of Kansas owned it. “The green AMC Cowboy wound up with Jim Alexander’s nephew years ago,” according to AMC expert Mike Spangler, of Jefferson, Wis. “That one was the cowboy based on the Hornet SC 360,” Spangler pointed out to Trucks Plus. “There was another one based on a Gremlin front end which is owned by Brian Moyer of Pennsylvania. I think it is under restoration. Brian also owns the Gremlin Voyager Prototype GREM BIN and the Gremlin prototype Gremlin XP, as well as a right-hand drive Australian-built Gremlin.”

The red mock-up or prototype had the older style Hornet front end with Jeep badges on the front fenders. There were Jeep badges on the rear end, too.
