FRESH TRACKS Mopar Introduces Four AllNew Jeep Concepts at the 2021 SEMA Show
M
opar introduced seven custom concept vehicles at the recent 2021 SEMA Show that were displayed prominently at their booth throughout the week. Two Ram trucks, one Dodge muscle car and four Jeep concept vehicles were on display. Here is a quick rundown of the four Jeeps. Jeep Wrangler 4xe Concept The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Concept features a Jeep Performance Products (JPP) 2-in. lift kit with FOX shocks specifically tuned for the Wrangler 4xe and rides on JPP beadlock-capable wheels with functional Beadlock Rings, wrapped in 37-in. BFGoodrich KM3 tires. A JPP Gorilla Glass windshield offers up to three times the strength of a stock windshield and inside the tailgate features a custom trail-rail management system that features multi-position cargo loops to safely secure and carry gear while a swing-gate flip-gate table adds a useful flat surface. Jeep Wrangler Overlook Concept The Jeep Wrangler Overlook concept stretches a four-door Wrangler Sahara into a three-row off-roader loaded with luxury touches and a wide array of products from JPP. The cabin has been extended an additional 12-in. to hold a third row of seats and a custom modular roofline is 5-in. taller than standard for more interior headroom. Outdoor viewing is enhanced with a dual side and three front-facing windows above the second and third rows and a removable one-piece Freedom Top with flip-up glass sunroof panel is featured. The Overlook sits on a JPP 2-in. lift kit with FOX Shocks which clear room for 20-in. Black Rhino York wheels mounted on 37-in. BFGoodrich KM3 mud-terrain tires. Jeep Grand Cherokee L Breckenridge Concept The three-row Jeep Grand Cherokee L Breckenridge concept features a custom, two-tone Magnetite matte/metallic and glossblack paint scheme with satin bronze accents and features an overall premium look, accented by five-spoke Mopar 21-in. wheels. A roof-mounted, piano-black Thule cargo box sits on top of dual Mopar cross bars and provides additional storage for skis or snowboards in a safe, hard-shell lockable container. Inside, Mopar stainless-steel pedal covers with black rubber pads add a bold flair and plenty of traction to the accelerator and brake pedals while Mopar all-weather floor mats appear throughout the cabin. Kaiser Jeep M725 Concept The Kaiser Jeep M725 concept is a vintage 1967 Kaiser Jeep M725 military ambulance transformed for duty as an off-road support machine. The exterior features a Desert Tan colour, 20x12 Black Rhino Armory wheels with 40-in. tires which sit under widened fenders. The custom-designed roof panel over the cargo area can raise 16-in. and allows occupants to stand while retrieving supplies or serving food and refreshments from the open driver’s side rear panel. Forward lighting comes from a set of concept 7-in. LED headlamps flanked by separate pairs of JPP 5-in. off-road LED lights, while out back features LED taillights installed in the original protective metal buckets. Under the hood is a Mopar 392 Crate HEMI V8 engine paired to a TorqueFlite 727 automatic transmission. OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021

SEMA Awards Highlight Top Trending Vehicle Models Also once again awarded at this year’s SEMA Show were the SEMA Award winners which highlight the best new vehicles for personalization as voted on by exhibiting manufacturers and recognize top trending vehicle models in five categories including Car of the Year, Sport Compact of the Year, 4x4/SUV of the Year, Full-Size Truck of the Year and Mid-Size Truck of the year. Ford were once again big winners, this time taking home top prize in three categories including Car of the Year with the Mustang, 4x4/SUV of the Year with the Bronco and Full-Size Truck of the year with the F-Series. Toyota also won big at this year’s show after being named champion in the remaining two categories with the Supra winning Sport Compact of the Year and the Tacoma taking top spot in Mid-Size Truck of the Year. “The SEMA Award celebrates the industry’s unique ability to identify and set trends that influence automotive enthusiast worldwide,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “Consumers are able to look to SEMA Award winners for guidance on which vehicles offer the greatest opportunities for customization.” These awards would suggest that aftermarket manufacturers are investing more in these five vehicles than any other vehicles and consumers can expect to find greater options for accessorizing these vehicles.
SEMA Announces New Product Award Winners The in-person SEMA Show returned in 2021 after missing out on 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic and once again the New Product Award Winners were announced during the show. The awards are given to the most innovative and cutting-edge automotive aftermarket products that are set to hit the market in 2022. The annual competition recognizes outstanding achievements in the development of products being introduced to the automotive specialty-equipment market at the SEMA Show. The products are judged in 16 different award categories with each category naming one winner and two runners-up. This year more than 1,300 products were entered with the winners being selected based on a variety of factors which include innovation, technical achievement, quality and workmanship, consumer appeal and more. The Exterior Accessory Product category saw CURT take top prize with its MultiPro/Multi-Flex Tailgate Sensor with Hitch Cap while Mickey Thompson Tires and Wheels also won the Tire and Related Product Category with its Baja Legend EXP tire. In the Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive category, ICON Vehicle Dynamics was named winner of the CDEV Shock Powered by IIC with Dirt Dynamix Universal Truck Bed Pole Mount and Warn’s Vehicle Recovery being named runners-up. Story by Dan Heyman, photos courtesy of Stellantis
here was no way they’d ever do it. Not possible. T Stellantis has been stuffing its Hemi V8 in Dodge Challengers, Chargers, Durangos – even the Grand Cherokee, which
has even seen the grand poobah Hellcat motor thrown in. That was all a kind of natural progression in that they’re all mid- to full-size vehicles, well-equipped for that kind of power and the Challenger/Charger twins are tailor made. And all of us blue-blooded gearheads are forever grateful to them for doing what they’re doing with these massive powerplants.
Yeah... It’s Got a Hemi The all-new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392
But the Jeep Wrangler? They’d never go that far, would they? Well, not past far-out concepts like the Trailcat that have been making the rounds on the auto show circuit for a couple of years now. After all, the Wrangler has legions of fans that love it for its simplicity, its off-road abilities, even its history or just its ability to look pretty cool in any environment, from the beach parking lot to the trailhead. It’s had a V8 before – back in the 1981 CJ –and it hasn’t had one since, because most Wrangler buyers are happy with the four- and six-cylinder plants it’s always had. They got the job done, and they were light so they didn’t infringe on the Wrangler’s ability to hit the trails.
In the end, though, it seems that Jeep just couldn’t help themselves and now we have this: the 2021 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392, eg The One With The Big V8 Inside. How big? That’s 6.4 litres from tip to tail, pushing out 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque and possibly earning the illustrious award of craziest Hemi-powered thing ever to be available on the showroom floor. And yes; I say that even with consideration to the Challenger Hellcat Redeye, or the Dodge Demon – well, that last one probably still takes the cake, but it’s not like there were that many – if any – found in showrooms, so there’s kind of an asterisk there. Like pretty much everything save for the Demon and the Charger/Challenger widebody models, the Wrangler 392 is not all that distinguishable from the Rubicons we’ve known and loved for decades now. It even still says “Rubicon” down the side of the hood, just as the model always has – not “Hemi”, or “392” or anything like that; just “Rubicon.” Which, by the way, is the only way you can get the 392 motor. That, and with four doors as opposed to two – because that would be crazy talk. You will find some flourishes of beige-gold trim sprinkled over the body and even on the engine cover, but that’s about the only distinguishing factor style-wise. So, you get all the good stuff the Rubicon’s always had; Dana axles front and back, Falken Wildpeak off-road tires, mechanical lockers, disconnecting sway bars and Fox shocks with increased ride height. So, it still has all the ability to climb the muddiest of slopes and snowiest of cabin trails. Climbing up a steep grade on a trail recently muddied by intense rains on the grounds of Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (or “Mosport”, for those in the know), the Rubicon 392 did what it always has; clawed its way gamely over the mud, slick roots and sharp rocks, never skipping a beat, never even offering a hint of hesitation as it surged forward. Indeed, with all that torque, you’re scrambling up stuff like this at a faster clip than you’re typically used to, but you’re still doing it, still unflappable as you surge forth. You will be a little louder though, that’s for sure. The big, gruff V8 makes a big, gruff sound as a V8 should, sounding very similar to the other vehicles in the stable that make use of this bloody great big powerplant. It isn’t the most powerful Hemi-equipped off-roader you can get – let’s not forget the Ram TRX, which gets the Hellcat 707-hp engine – but the Wrangler remains better suited for trails, while the TRX is more about moving very quickly over sand dunes and the like.
12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
In addition to the familiar looks, the interior environs are what we’ve always known from the Wrangler. There’s still the traditional gauge cluster with a tach and speedo and not a whole lot else, still the window controls mounted to the centre stack, making the doors easier to remove, and you still have the various off-road controls mounted low (and a little inconveniently, I might add) on the centre sack. Still the manual 4L/4H/2H controls. It’s all Wrangler in here. Speaking of the disconnecting sway bar: as if this thing wasn’t capable enough, you can disconnect the front sway bar in the blink of an eye. Sitting there and feeling it as the whole shebang settles down a little as it provides the axle with more breathing room is pretty uncanny, and the way the 392 proceeds to uncannily dismantle elephant tracks, boulder-dotted descents and the like provides a feeling of invulnerability that while not without equal in this game – the Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner and Land Rover Defender are all pretty darn good – is still a great look at what has always made the Wrangler such an attractive tool for this kind of work. Of course, this being the V8 model, I was perhaps even more curious to see how it performed on the road as opposed to off it. You knew it was probably going to be very good off-road – that Rubicon name means a lot
is on the highway you‘re on (perhaps more so), except now you do have to keep a somewhat closer eye on things because this baby squats like a sonofagun under hard acceleration. And, when you squat like that, you lose traction up front – as in any racer – and that means you might find the wheel writhing unnervingly in your hands when you get on it, especially if you’re doing so when turning. It’s a weird sensation because you’ve got this muscle-car growl that you know and love if you’ve driven Hemi-powered vehicles before – as I have, many times – but since it comes accompanied with all of the Wrangler’s high centre-of-gravity foibles, it does kind of feel like the 392’s knees are shaking just a bit. It’s fast, oh, it is fast, but I wouldn’t take it to my favourite winding mountain road, per se. Indeed, even in 392 form, this Wrangler is still much happier off the beaten track, with its down-and-forward facing camera, Uconnect Off-Road Pages (detailing your angle of attack, axle articulation, steering angle and so forth) and so on.
– but here’s the thing: no one’s ever going to tell you that their first choice for a road trip on paved rods would be a Wrangler. Of any kind. They aren’t that aerodynamic, all that removable fanfare makes for a loud cockpit, the blocky tires are noisy and all that heavy running gear means a less than cultured ride. What would happen when you jammed all that power into the snout? Well, the good news is that if you liked the roughshod character the Wrangler has always had, you won’t be missing it here. It still feels like it would be as at home in the farmer’s field alongside the highway you’re on as it
Which I guess leaves me feeling like they may have taken things a little too far with this particular application of the vaunted 392 Hemi. The motor has always been somewhat superfluous but it seems even more so here. It doesn’t do all that much for you when off-roading, and can’t really be fully exploited when on paved surfaces, either, because even with the reinforced frame rails the 392 gets, it still falls victim to the Rubicon’s inherent on-road skittishness. And to top it all off, it costs over a hundred-thousand dollars if you aren’t careful with your feature choices. It’s a very cool idea – and I love that they actually had the minerals to do it - and it sounds great and there are plenty of Wrangler-philes and Hemiphiles alike that would probably have one, but I think the thrills the standard Rubicon is capable of offer far better bang for your buck than this.

Sport Utility Vehicle
The All-New Ford Bronco Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Ford Canada
T
he new Ford Bronco is billing itself as an icon. It may be a bit soon to give it that title, but it does legitimately hold the title of inventor of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) label. Back in 1964, Ford used that term in an advertising campaign – and it’s been with us ever since. Of course, there were the original Broncos built for a decade or so. Then the Bronco II was launched, and finally in the later ‘80s came the full-size Bronco. Each was related in name only. Now, after more than 25 years of sitting on a shelf, the Bronco name is once again being dusted off and fixed to a new vehicle, one that is aimed to compete with its arch rival – Jeep. Frankly, it’s the success of the Jeep brand over the past 10 years that no doubt spurred the boys in Dearborn to resurrect the Bronco. Well, today I have seen it and had a chance to drive it and it is impressive. Now, just to make sure there is no confusion, there is a Bronco Sport, launched this past Spring, based loosely on the Ford Escape. Meanwhile, the Bronco is a completely different animal, heavily engineered towards tackling the off-road world – and knocking Jeep off its rock-crawling pedestal. Like Jeep, Bronco comes as a two-door and four-door model. Both are capable, but the shorter wheelbase two-door will be the better of the two off-pavement. On my first 3-hour test drive, I had only the four-door model to test, so I’m guessing the two-door will be better, because the four-door truck was a beast in the mud. 18 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
It’s always fun to review a brand-new to-the-market vehicle and Bronco two- and four-door SUVs were designed and engineered from a clean slate. But you can’t help but notice the similarities to the Jeep where open-air driving is concerned.
Bronco will give you an open-air afternoon in just a matter of minutes. Available modular roof panels can be removed by one person using simple latches. Rear quarter windows can be removed simply by releasing a latch for each window. Two people

can remove the rear hardtop after removing a few fasteners. You can even remove the four fender flares in just a few minutes each. The look of the new Bronco relies heavily on its 1960’s history and you will never forget it’s a Bronco, as the logos are stamped on the body and interior fasteners. Also on the frameless doors, fenders, bumpers, grille and grab handles. The frameless EZ Air doors can also be removed by taking off two bolts and disconnecting an electrical connector. Each door takes between two and four minutes to remove. As for accessories, threaded Bronco logo mounting points from the factory fit accessories like LED pod lights to sideview mirrors and roof racks to the top sport bar. Available modular front and rear bumpers also come with threaded taps to mount winches, safari bars and LED lights. This Bronco carries a variety of packages, each offering increased off-road options. So, while aimed at Jeep, I suspect that this new competition will increase sales for both companies. It’s unlikely that one would dominate. 20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021

Happy Reality
2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz

F
ollowing a much-anticipated preview as a concept vehicle back at the Detroit Auto Show some six years ago, there wasn’t a lot of expectation that the Hyundai HCD-15 compact pickup would actually be made. Well, fast forward to present day and the 2022 Santa Cruz is a happy reality. “Santa Cruz, with its bold styling, breaks open all new segment territory, both for Hyundai and the industry as a whole. Open-bed flexibility coupled with closed-cabin security meets the changing everyday needs of its adventure-oriented buyers, while the powerful and efficient engine and superb manoeuvrability ensure it is a pleasure to drive in urban or off-road environments. Our customers will wonder just how they managed before owning one,” says José Muñoz, Hyundai Motor North America president and CEO, in a news release. Rather than a traditional body-onframe build, this small truck has a unibody construction based on the Tucson crossover, which becomes evident when you look at the two side-by-side: both sharing many traits from the windshield forward, for example the headlamps hiding behind the large black T-shaped grille. 22 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
The front end is quite different from the concept, though the general essence remains the same. Around the side, the former rear suicide half-doors have been replaced by regular versions allowing much easier occupant ingress and egress. The second row area is slightly smaller than the Tucson’s, the up-to-three passengers in the back enjoying a little less legroom as a result at around 927 millimetres. Still, an infant car seat fit no problem. And there are handy cubbies underneath the bench that accommodates bags or electronics.
Measuring 4.34 feet, the bed is small by pickup standards. Carrying lengthy recreational toys may be an issue, however towing shouldn’t be with the vehicle boasting 5,000 pounds of capacity. Nevertheless, the design is unique and useful. The floor can be lifted up to reveal a smaller storage compartment underneath, and a factory sliding and lockable hard tonneau cover keeps valuables concealed and protected against the elements, and is even able to hold up to 100 kilograms of weight. It’s worth noting unlike, well, pretty much every other example on the market, the cover does not lock with the rest of the doors. A manual yellow knob on the underside must be turned, otherwise you might find your belongings gone upon returning from a shopping trip or a meal. In addition, ensure the top handle is in the downward closed position when shut, otherwise the panel could slide open during driving (I found out the hard way on a rainy evening cruise).

Possessing a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, making 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and mated to an eightspeed “wet” (utilizing oil to lubricate and cool the transmission for increased performance) dual-clutch automatic gearbox, the Santa Cruz is way more fun to pilot than a truck should be.

Looking Ahead
Jeep Doubles Down on a 4xe Future Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of Stellantis
I
t seems like every day we hear more and more news signaling the end of gas-powered cars. While the last days of fuel-burners might be decades away, the auto industry is certainly focused on battery-powered vehicles at the present. As fuel prices continue to increase, and as technologies become more affordable, consumers are also taking note. Stellantis – which combines the likes of PSA Group, FCA and others under one roof - is now one of the world’s largest automakers and encompasses iconic brands like Peugeot, Alfa Romeo, and Jeep – along with almost a dozen others. This merger of manufacturing will almost certainly influence the electrified future of the Wrangler and Grand Cherokee – two of Jeep’s most important models – as EV decrees come down from on high.
ties – save for a charging port on the cowl and some blue badging – and that’s the way Jeep wanted it. While it’s no longer the most powerful Wrangler (that title goes to the limited run 392 V8, although the 4xe matches its 470 lb-ft torque output) it’s certainly the most accessible power bump that Jeeps have seen in many years. In fact, owners that we spoke to said they chose the 4xe because of its nearly 100-horsepower advantage over the long-running Pentastar 3.6L V6 – not to mention the increased instant torque that EV motors provide. That the 4xe has better fuel economy – this is just
When the JL Wrangler was introduced, we noted that Jeep’s roadmap included hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. Since then, we’ve had two models hit the streets – a mild hybrid, and a full-on Plug-in Hybrid EV (PHEV). While the mild hybrid was nothing to shout from the rooftops about, in 4xe form the Wrangler has taken on a completely new identity – while retaining its off-road roots. Sporting a well-hidden battery and an electric motor integrated into the transmission, the 4xe gives nothing away about its electric capabiliDEC/JAN 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 25
a benefit that helps offset its added cost, they say. In real-world testing with a 60-percent EV and 40-percent hybrid driving pattern, we saw about 9.0L/100km. While this isn’t much better than the advertised consumption for a V6 Wrangler, the term “fuel economy” generally makes Jeep owners chuckle – they’re fully aware that a brick on wheels isn’t exactly a model of automotive efficiency. Modifications made to the standard JL drivetrain for the 4xe reveal that Jeep is paying more than just lip service to the “PHEV-everything” trend sweeping the industry right now. These subtle differences also show that Jeep wants a long-lasting and well respected PHEV in the lineup, signaling to us that they’re serious about a mass-production battery EV (BEV) soon. In fact, the Jeep Magneto concept shown earlier in 2021 promises just that – and by the end of 2023. Early speculation that the generation following the JL would be the first to offer an EV might turn out to be false. 4xe Wranglers in Rubicon trim have an increased GVW of about 775 lb. over their gas counterparts. This is in no small part caused by the 17.3 kWh battery wedged under the back seats, and is also due to the increased structure required to protect it during an accident – battery fires are no joke. To maintain the Rubicon’s off-road performance, the 4xe has an additional one-inch lift compared to a standard Rubicon, allowing for more wheel travel under the extra weight. In addition, the longer motor-transmission setup required changing the front and rear drive shafts, and the front and rear axles are taken directly from the JT Gladiator – likely because of the torque-heavy EV setup requiring the slightly more robust axles and internals found in the JT. These small, un-advertised
26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
changes put the 4xe at an advantage over the standard Rubicon, giving a hybrid the unlikely title of Best Jeep Around. Perhaps the weakest component of the 4xe is the one you may not use very much if you have a charger at home. The 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine up front is a Fiat design adapted for Jeeps and is probably one of the noisiest and roughest seen in a hybrid vehicle anywhere to date. When the electric drivetrain is depleted, the fourbanger takes over completely, often emitting strange growls and generally arguing with the eight-speed transmission when any kind of serious demand is placed on it. If you’re going out off-road for the day, you’re better off leaving the 4xe in “Hold” mode to reserve your EV power while you cruise to your destination. Not only will you avoid relying on an overall less-powerful drivetrain, but you will also see excellent performance on the trails with the instant torque provided with EV in the mix.
possibly one in each axle or perhaps even at each wheel. This would do away with the need for a transfer case, drive shafts, and even the venerable solid axle design. Certainly the latter would be missed, but not by all – Jeeps notoriously require constant attention in terms of handling due to those axles. With the “4xe” badge appearing on the new Grand Cherokee and others, it seems that Jeep is banking on EV being a significant part of the lineup for years to come. If done correctly, a fully-electric Wrangler of tomorrow might ensure that future off-roaders are able to enjoy the same kind of vehicles we are lucky to still have in production now. Technological progress has a habit of dismissing tried-and-true methods in favour of “what’s new” – but if Jeep and the bosses at Stellantis can retain the Wrangler’s off-road soul, they’ll blaze a new trail into the BEV future.
The Magneto concept would, if put into production today, offer less power than the 4xe – after all, a BEV is all about range and being wasteful in that regard would almost certainly deter customers. When a fully EV Jeep makes it to market, it’ll likely sport a more V6-like power output, with the previously noted electric torque advantage. There’s even talk of a six-speed manual transmission being available for purists – although considering the very linear and predictable power output of electric drivetrains and how well they perform when directly coupled to axles or transfer cases, this seems like a bit of a gimmick. It’s not likely that Jeep’s first fully-electric Wrangler will be their greatest. It will take a complete redesign of the platform to truly integrate North America’s most popular off-roader with the BEV technologies of the future. In fact, the drivetrain under a Jeep is very much based on a century-old design. We’d be interested to see what a Wrangler would look like with multiple electric motors, DEC/JAN 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 27
