All-New 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L Officially Unveiled has decided to enter the three-row SUV market quickly with the Jseteep introduction of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. The new SUV is to be the most off-road capable three-row SUV ever and will be the
first model to feature the Grand Cherokee’s new look and platform. The two-row Grand Cherokee will still be offered as the previous generation version for now, where it will then join the Grand Cherokee L on the new platform and design for the 2022 model year. Although it still performed very well in terms of sales, a lot of the Grand Cherokee’s main competition offered a three-row version, which is why the decision was made to enter that market as fast as possible. As mentioned, the new Grand Cherokee L will still provide Jeep’s legendary 4x4 capability with either Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II active transfer cases. The available air-suspension system now features electronic damping and provides the SUV with class-leading ground clearance and water fording. The system can be controlled with manual controls or automatically, and features five height settings, including two specifically for off-roading. The Selec-Terrain management system offers five available terrain modes including Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow and Mud/Sand which allows you to choose the best on- and off-road setting for your current driving situation. The Grand Cherokee L builds upon the already great looks from the previous generation but with a more refined, yet aggressive look that screams upscale. Inside is chock full of upgrades and new designs as well, including a digital gauge display and 10.1-in. touchscreen. Under the hood will be the standard 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine that makes 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft. of torque, or the optional 5.7L HEMI V8 engine rated at 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft. of torque. To save fuel, the Grand Cherokee L features front axle disconnect which disconnects the front axle, automatically putting the system into two-wheel drive when sensed by the vehicle. Four-wheel drive will be automatically engaged when the vehicle then senses it is needed. The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L will arrive in dealerships in the second quarter of 2021, with the all-new Grand Cherokee two-row and 4xe electrified version debuting later in 2021. Ford Introduces All-New 2021 F-150 Tremor Ford has expanded its rugged off-road family of trucks with the addition of the all-new 2021 Ford F-150 Tremor, which combines all-terrain upgrades and outstanding towing and payload capacity. The Tremor was designed for those seeking more off-road capability than the available FX4 package, which would come in handy for people with jobs that require they venture off-road. The Tremor, of course, features the same high-strength steel frame and high-strength, military grade, aluminum alloy body as the rest of the lineup and is based on the SuperCrew configuration with the 5.5-ft. box, 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine and 10speed automatic transmission. It comes available in standard, mid and high equipment groups with all sharing core suspension hardware that helps balance work with off-road capability. The suspension boasts retuned front and rear springs for added ground clearance, while front hub knuckles and upper control arms are revised. The monotube shocks in the front and twin tube shocks in the rear are tuned for softer damping at low speeds with additional damping and control for more severe off-road events. Thirty-three-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires are mounted on matte-finished 18-in. Wheels, providing an aggressive stance, while a Raptor-style bash plate protects the front end. The truck includes a standard locking rear differential and optional late-availability upgrade to a Torsen limited-slip front across all equipment levels. In terms of appearance, the F-150 Tremor features a more aggressive hood and front end with a unique grille that has a blacked-out Ford oval with signature Tremor colour Active Orange highlights. It comes available with all the technology and safety features you could want and will be available sometime this summer.

Unstoppable Off-Roader
We finally get to test the all-new 2021 Land Rover Defender 110 Story and photos by Dan Heyman fter an almost 25-year hiatus, the Land Rover Defender A has made its way back to North America, and with it, we get to experience the latest evolution – more of a revolution, really -- of one of the most famous nameplates not just in the SUV world, but in the automotive world in general.
For the uninitiated: the 2021 Land Rover Defender’s ancestry can be traced all the way back to the late ‘40s, when Britain was tired of having to rely on the Americans to provide Willys MB JPs (or “jeeps”) for their military and decided to create something they could call their own. In addition to that, the Defender became one of the first civilian vehicles available with four-wheel-drive. Land Rover also used aluminium for their bodies, which is also the case for the new model. Fast-forward to 1983, and after a series of evolutions, the “new” Defender was born, looking more modern than the older vehicle -- which had looked pretty much the same for about 40 years. Even though the ladder-framed Defender’s ride was choppy, it wasn’t all that fast and both head- and legroom were on the wrong side of “generous,” it has achieved cult status in North America like few other SUVs this side of the Jeep Wrangler and perhaps the Ford Bronco. 10 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2021
And now, the Defender is back in both long-wheelbase 110 and short-wheelbase 90 forms, and it’s both like and unlike Defenders of old. In Canada, we have two engine choices, both turbocharged: a four-banger good for 296 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque in P300 form, and a six-cylinder with some mild hybrid functions good for 395 hp and 406 lb-ft in P400 form, as seen here. The Defender has always been known for its diesel power, though, and while a diesel version does exist, we won’t be seeing it here. Styling-wise, they’ve nailed it, right on the head – sort of. The boxy profile; the LED headlights; the “portholes” on the roof; the “Pangea Green” paintjob and the white roof (a $1,010 option, but still) that recalls Landies of old that had no air con and relied on white roofs to keep it cool inside; all beautifully executed. That’s of course less of an issue for me because a) I live in ultra-temperate Vancouver and b) my tester had the huge $1,850 sliding panoramic sliding roof. Which, believe it or not, is not the most expensive option; you can also get a fabric roof section – again, very old-school Defender, that – for a whopping $2,250. That’s a lot to spend for a section of tent.
Now, the “sort of” bit: the $1,350 20-inch wheels on my tester are a bit of a thorn in my side as well, in that they look way too modern for this truck; they’re fine for a Discovery or Range Rover Velar I’m sure, but not the Defender. A Defender needs body-coloured steelies and while you can get them, they’re reserved for the lower trims and their smaller brakes because that’s the only way they’ll fit. Shame. Once inside, it’s again very Defender-y and very not; in the “not” sense, well, there’s headroom. Lots of it. There’s also legroom, as well as a heated steering wheel, the latest in Jaguar-Land Rover’s infotainment technology (centred around a low-profile 10-inch display that feels just as responsive to the touch as your tablet does), digital rear-view mirror and Meridian audio; I have a feeling that in the older Defender, you’d be lucky to get FM audio. It’s airy, it’s spacious, it’s quite techy and it’s high-class where it needs to be, and just a little rugged otherwise. The seats are adjustable a number of ways and heated – but they’re a little flat and high-mounted and in my tester, finished in a very mil-spec olive drab colour with both leather and a sort of cut-proof-seeming nylon that you’d need if you were to have a bowie knife on your hip. Which you very well could, in a vehicle like this. I love them.
There’s even a third row – but barely. It’s incredibly snug and I couldn’t justify stuffing an adult back there unless I had a real axe to grind with them. Save the $2,300 required to get that feature. Plus, if you really want some extra seating, you can go super basic and scrap the centre console with its wireless charger and optional cooler, and have – wait for it – a fold-down seat there instead. That’s right; the front row…can be a bench seat, just like in the ’87 Cutlass Ciera my wife used to drive. Then there’s the “barn-door” style tailgate. It’s heavy and it opens from left to right, meaning that when parked on the right side of the road – as you would be in almost every country in the world but not, coincidentally, the Defender’s home country of England – the door opens against the curb. That means that you have to be sure to leave room between yourself and the car behind you and even then, you may have to walk around the front of the Defender to get to the tailgate. There’s a big opening once the door is open, though, and you can operate the Defender’s adjustable air suspension system from buttons mounted inside the tailgate for a lower liftover height. That’s enough about the foibles and quirks; let’s get on to what I like about the Defender, and that starts with the cost of entry. You can get into the 110 for less than 70 grand – 70 grand! FEB/MAR 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 11
– assuming you can live with the four-banger. Getting the six-cylinder will run you just over 75 grand at base, but even that’s not so bad considering that with it you get air suspension, adaptive dampers, hill-descent control, LED head- and taillights, dual-zone climate control, interior mood lighting, 360-degree parking aid, leather seats, bigger brakes and more. It’s a great deal and to be honest, the one option my $89,000 tester had that I really would want is that contrast-colour roof. The drive experience starts with that great powertrain. Power is shifted to the four wheels through a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine and transmission working well together in unison to maintain surprisingly brisk forward progress. On the road, meanwhile, the adaptive dampers and air suspension do a proper job of keeping everything copacetic; all but the harshest bumps are metered out, and you have to lay some of the blame at the feet of my tester’s big wheels for that. The real take-home for me, though, when it came to the urban grind, was just how easy the Defender was to manoeuvre through tight situations. They’ve tuned the steering just so, and the view out is so good that parallel parking spots I felt would involve a lot of wheel turning were never as bad as I thought they’d be. It’s a masterclass in size management, that’s for sure, because the 110 is not a small SUV by any means. Off the beaten track, meanwhile, the Defender acts as you knew it would; the four-wheel drive system is an impressive one that provides plenty of wheel articulation and the well-tuned steering does its part here as well to provide a ton of confidence as you cross more rugged terrain. There are, of course, a number of drive modes – six, to be precise – that adjust throttle mapping, traction control, transmission response and suspension travel. There’s also a way-cool feature that uses cameras to basically make your hood disappear, so you can
12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2021
see what’s going on below you when off-roading. It’s all very tech and un-Defender, but darned if it isn’t effective. Equally effective is the air suspension, and its ride height that can be changed on-the-fly to allow anywhere from 8.5 to 11.5inches of ground clearance, helping achieve a 900 mm wading depth. This is a truck that’s meant to be taken off-road.
The pros so outweigh the cons here that this vehicle is a clear win for Land Rover, a company that, along with Jaguar, has had a rough go as of late. The Defender, however, is a vehicle tailormade to handle the rough stuff and it could very well be the shot in the arm that the company needs. I love it, and I want one. Now, about those steelies…

“ isruptive technology” – it’s one of those phrases thrown around by every tech startup eager to make their mark on society. Yet it’s seldom spoken in the same sentence as an auto manufacturer’s name. Of course, most marques are notoriously capable of resisting technological change – vehicle platforms are incredibly expensive to develop (usually in the billions of dollars) and require many years of production in order to be a profitable investment.
competed among its gas-powered rivals, supported by a mobile fastcharge station and factory engineers. Never before had an all-electric 4x4 joined in on such a grueling real-world challenge. To find out why 4x4 off-roaders are so disruptive, we need only look at the drivetrain. Described by Rivian as a “skateboard” chassis, the powertrain of the R1T pickup and R1S SUV is a throwback to a concept first championed by General Motors in the early 2000s – What
Even Tesla – the automaker that is worth 400-percent more than Toyota in spite of producing 8.3 million fewer vehicles – follows this practice. Ignoring the shortcomings of its decade-old design, Tesla’s Model S sedan habitually receives automatic updates that improve not only its connectivity and infotainment, but also optimize its driving performance and battery usage. The age of the tech-centric automobile is here, and it’s distinctly electric – which we are learning means a lot more for off-roaders than it does for any other type of driver. The 2020 edition of the Rebelle Rally was like no other – and not for obvious travel-related reasons. The most recent running of North America’s longest off-road rally event was augmented for the first time by the addition of two electric vehicles – Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV, and Rivian’s R1T. Dubbed “Team Killer Watt” and piloted by Rebelle veterans Emme Hall & Rebecca Donaghe, a Rivian prototype if there was a simple, unified platform on top of which a company could build any type of vehicle it wanted? This idea is finally being executed, allowing Rivian to produce three vehicles on an identical chassis, the third being a delivery van for customers like Amazon (who have ordered 100,000.) By leveraging the simplicity and adaptability of EV technology, Rivian is poised to disrupt not only the truck & SUV market, but the commercial market too. In addition to the platform itself being an inventive creation, the very nature of electric motors helps Rivian shake things up for off-road enthusiasts. It’s well-known that EV motors are capable of huge torque numbers without a curving power band (peak torque is achieved before the motor even completes one full revolution from standstill) and even better known that they are more energy-efficient than any gasoline or diesel engine in existence.
16 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2021
In fact, these motors eliminate the need for a traditional differential axle altogether – a revolutionary concept that may finally end the debate about Independent Suspension vs. Solid Axle. EV motors can be placed anywhere in the vehicle – not being restricted by complicated cooling systems, space considerations, or powertrain requirements has a certain advantage when it comes to designing a vehicle for maximum ground clearance and load carrying. In fact, concepts have shown that EV motors could be placed inside the wheel hub itself, eliminating CV axles and other complicated parts. Such a design would be a boon to off-road vehicles, allowing them to be designed independent of any suspension that revolves around any type of axle. The R1 platform boasts the usual EV superiority – extremely quick acceleration, roomy interior, and lots of load space (yes, there’s a frunk!) But what about raw off-road performance? Other than the previously mentioned torque abilities, Rivian’s 4x4 has four independently controllable motors, precipitating the ability to eliminate almost any kind of wheel slip. Undoubtedly the coolest feature of these independent motors is the ability to perform a “tank turn” – wherein the left side motors spin opposite of the right, causing the vehicle to spin in place… along with a spray of whatever mud or dirt lies beneath the tires. This simple action displays the rebellious consequences of electric vehicles – no longer do off-road vehicles have to obey the laws of single-engine combustion vehicles.
4x4 owners spend plenty of time driving on pavement. Perhaps later models will omit these pricey features in favour of a lower MSRP, but for now early adopters will get to enjoy a little bit more comfort and convenience for the higher cost of being first. What about charging? Many overlanders carry extra fuel to prevent getting stranded in remote locations – but EV range anxiety is a real thing even on city streets. So how will the Rivian models be any different than other EVs? They won’t – but just like Tesla has a nationwide charging network, so too will Rivian. To start, the R1 platform will be sold with a “Large” pack, sporting 475 km of range – about in line with the fuel capacity of most high-output gas-powered trucks. While
Rivian’s truck also lays down some interesting off-road clearance specs. Although its approach and departure angles are comparable to a Jeep Gladiator, it boasts a full 14.4 inches of ground clearance – almost 3 inches more than a Gladiator Rubicon. Despite not coming equipped with any sort of active air suspension seen on models like the Land Rover Defender, the R1 family stays competitive in this category. Lift kits will undoubtedly be available for Rivian’s 4x4s, regardless of how they might affect the finely tuned range and performance these vehicles possess. While ground clearance is important, one wonders what a day of bashing around trails might do to lithium-ion battery packs. Thankfully, Rivian seems to be following the trend set by 4x4 enthusiasts and offers a full set of underbody skid plates as an option. That package also includes recovery points and an air compressor – the latter being an item that should be standard on just about any vehicle that claims to be “adventure ready.” Topping it all off is an available 20-inch wheel package with all-terrain tires. Beyond the slate of off-road-centric options, Rivian has decided to stuff its SUV and pickup models with the latest and greatest trends in automotive technology. No up-market electric vehicle would be complete without self-driving, 5G connectivity, touchscreens and comfort gadgets. While some of these options are seemingly useless on the average off-grid camping trip, it’s well understood that most
they might not be able to haul extra fuel like a Jeep or Toyota could, 475 km is still a decent distance, with charging stations becoming common in more far-flung places as time goes on. An available ‘Max’ pack gives an additional 165 km of range, but still won’t impress hardcore overlanders. Could the Rivian R1T be the next big thing in overlanding and offroading? Just ask the Rebelle’s Team Killer Watt and their 6th place finish among ‘more capable’ mass-production vehicles. If the hype is true – and the price tag softens up a bit with future trim levels – this truck could be a winner. Many of us seek the outdoors to escape from the sounds and fumes of the city - what better way to do it than in a groundbreaking pickup truck? After all, there would be nothing quite like cruising the back roads of Canada in a totally-silent, environmentally sympathetic 4x4.

rends come and go, but North Americans’ love for stylish, adventure-packed SUVs is determined to stick around. The segment experienced explosive growth over the last decade, overtaking traditional passenger cars in popularity – and profitability. According to DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., the light truck category (which includes pickup trucks, SUVs, vans and buses) experienced a record year in 2020, accounting for 79.9% of all auto sales in Canada.
hp 6.4L V8 HEMI in the new Rubicon 392, and a 350-hp 2.0L Turbo PHEV mated to a 17-kWh battery pack in the new hybrid 4xe. Both models have garnered applause from Jeep fans. However, not all shoppers enticed by the potency of a Jeep badge are ready to adopt social nuances like the Jeep wave. For those
U.S. data paint a similar picture, leading automakers to release a surge of new products. In its annual Car Wars study, Bank of America Merrill Lynch estimates new vehicle launches will nearly double from 40 debuts in 2021 to 77 in 2022, and remain elevated throughout 2024. Unsurprisingly, crossovers, SUVs and pickups will dominate line-ups. Sleek electric and hybrid variants will make their mainstream debut during this period; however, consumer preference remains fixed on off-road vehicles that look as sharp cruising pavement as they do exploring trails. Opportunistic automakers, seeking a way to capitalize on nostalgia without compromising fuel economy, have released a flurry of innovative off-road packages, trims and special editions. Below are six of the top candidates for 2021. Jeep Trailhawk Treatment Most thoughts immediately jump to the Jeep Wrangler when discussing off-road vehicles, and rightfully so. Even in stock form, the boxy SUV is designed to conquer rough terrain while pushing the low growl of adventurous freedom out its exhaust pipe. Indeed, the 2021 model year promises two new impressive powertrains: a 47018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2021
seeking a little more power-of-choice, a Trailhawk trim may be in order. Trailhawk essentially designates a vehicle as “Trail Rated Tough.” Jeep vehicles available with this trim include the Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass and Renegade. The treatment varies per model but, overall, offers enhanced crawling ratios, water fording, suspension travel and manoeuvrability. All Trailhawk trims also receive off-road wheels and tires, a pre-installed lift kit, full skid plating, red tow hooks and a 4WD system.
For 2021, Trailhawks across the lineup gain more standard features, from a heated steering wheel in the Cherokee to adaptive cruise control in the Compass. Shoppers eyeing the Grand Cherokee may be interested to learn that while the model celebrates its generational change in 2021 by introducing a new three-row variant, the Trailhawk trim is currently only available on the two-row version. That model receives its redesign for 2022, though sales start in late 2021. Ford Bronco Sasquatch Package Since the prodigal son has returned to the off-road segment, it (like the Wrangler) is nearly impossible to ignore. Available in both two- and four-door configurations, Ford’s resurrected Bronco flexes serious skill and serves up six ruggedly-curated trims. According to the automakers, each is designed to complement a specific type of adventure, from mainstream to extreme. However, among all the trim levels, powertrain options and available upgrades, Sasquatch is the add-on package receiving the most attention. The Sasquatch package adds 35-inch mud-terrain tires wrapped around 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, an electronic transfer case, locking front and rear axles, heavy-duty Bilstein shock absorbers, high-clearance fender flares and a 1.2-inch lift. It is available on every Bronco trim and comes standard on the Wildtrak desert runner-style model. Additionally, after months of enthusiasts’ petitioning, Ford has agreed to offer the Sasquatch package with the option of a sevenspeed manual transmission. This pairing offers a 94.75:1 maximum crawl ratio. Off-road excellence comes at a price though. For Canadian customers, the Sasquatch package adds $7,000 to a Bronco’s price tag ($4,500 on the Badlands trim). Ford Expedition FX4 Traditionally reserved for Ford trucks, the FX4 Off-Road Package was first applied to the Expedition SUV in 2018. The result is something of a suburban sleeper.
The lumbering seven-seater may look like a classic family hauler, but underneath those FX4 badges hide premium off-road front and rear shocks, an electronic limited-slip rear differential, a two-speed automatic four-wheel drive system, steel skid plates and chromeplated running boards. The 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels receive new designs for 2021, wearing 32-inch all-terrain tires. A standard twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 provides ample output for trail rides and, when equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, offers best-in-class towing of 4,173 kg. Available with or without a 360-degree split view camera, the FX4 package is now offered on XLT and Limited trims. Boasting a spacious and well-appointed cabin, with enough cupholders to rival most minivans, the Ford Expedition FX4 entices customers with a vision of comfortable off-pavement adventures for the whole family. According to Kelly Blue Book, the vehicle delivers on its promises. The company has crowned the Expedition “Best Full-Size SUV” for three years in a row. Watch for a new off-road Explorer, potentially dubbed Timberline, to join the Ford lineup for 2022. Spy photos indicate styling and mechanical upgrades similar to those of the FX4 package.

Nitto Terra Grappler tires and updated shocks. The full-size Sequoia, which joined the TRD Pro club in 2020, gets only a fresh coat of paint for the new year, also in the aforementioned gray-green Lunar Rock. For those who love a limited edition and require less ruggedness than a TRD Pro, Toyota’s new Trail Edition 4Runner may be of interest. The new model adds 17-inch dark gray TRD Off-Road wheels and a Yakima LoadWarrior rooftop cargo basket, as well as a custom sliding cargo tray in the rear which plays host to a custom-made 40-quart cooler. Inside the cabin, the mostly-stylistic upgrades continue with black badging, tan-stitched black seats and all-weather floormats.
Chevrolet Suburban/Tahoe Z71 Both the Chevrolet Suburban and its smaller Tahoe stablemate boast full redesigns for 2021, offering more passenger and cargo room, added advanced technologies and upgraded driving dynamics. Thanks to the model’s new full-size truck architecture, customers can enjoy the smooth-riding benefits of a new independent rear suspension and longer wheelbase. Available on the Z71 are Magnetic Ride Control and air springs, allowing drivers to manually adjust the suspension based on driving conditions. The first-in-class Air Ride Adaptive Suspension offers load levelling at all four corners of the vehicle and up to 102 mm of ride-height adjustment. However, adding this capability automatically tacks on the Max Trailering Package and Luxury Package. While both options only add to the vehicles’ off-road abilities, they do affect pricing.
Seeking something smaller? The segment-leading Toyota RAV4 gained a TRD Off-Road trim in 2020. A step below a TRD Pro, the model wears new bumpers, a fresh grille, bigger fender flares and matte-black 18inch wheels wrapped in Falken Wildpeak A/T tires. As for mechanicals, a special suspension system and user-selectable standard torquevectoring AWD system lend confidence both on- and off-road. Land Rover Defender Explorer Package Breaking tradition with its storied ancestors, the born-again Land Rover Defender reentered the SUV market in 2020. The all-new model still looks the part of an intrepid explorer, despite wearing an aluminum unibody underneath its retro-inspired exterior. Permanent AWD and locking differentials ensure the Defender can still venture off-road, while a new fully independent suspension shields occupants from feeling every bump along the way. An adjustable air
Standard on the Z71 are 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, black tubular assist steps, red tow hooks, underbody skid plates and a 4WD system. Both models share the same 355-hp 5.3L V8 engine, now with Dynamic Fuel Management technology which allows the engine to turn cylinders off when driving in situations that do not require full power. One may need to squint to see the differences between the two models, especially now that Chevy has squeezed 66-percent more cargo space out of the Tahoe. With new chassis systems, fresh interiors and upgraded handling, both full-sizers are working hard to inject a little sophistication into the next family camping trip. Toyota TRD Pro and Trail Edition Treatments Similar to Jeep’s Trailhawk designation, Toyota’s venerable TRD Pro label is applied to several vehicles in the automaker’s lineup. Each model sports slightly different features, but all share high-performance off-road shocks, a specially-tuned suspension, black alloy wheels, a unique front grille with “TOYOTA” badging and TRD graphics. Often spotted on Tundra and Toyota trucks, the TRD Pro trim is also available on 4Runner and Sequoia SUVs. For 2021, the Toyota 4Runner adds standard LED headlights to the collection of safety tech it gained in 2020. TRD Pro customers receive the option of a new Lunar Rock exterior colour, fresh wheels wearing
suspension upgrade, similar to that found in the new Suburban and Tahoe, is available on some models. A 296-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is standard, with a 395-hp hybrid-assisted turbo inline-six available for upgrade. Asserting its capability, the Defender also boasts a maximum 291 mm of ground clearance and 900 mm water-fording depth – both surpassing Wrangler Rubicon specifications. To infuse a little overland flavour, customers can add the Explorer Accessory Package. The bundle includes front and rear classic mud flaps, wheel arch protection, a spare wheel cover, side-mounted storage box, Expedition roof rack, raised air intake and matte-black hood decal. Not much is new on the Defender for 2021. An expanded lineup now includes “X-Dynamic” trim levels, which are largely appearance-oriented. However, fans of compact off-roaders will be happy to see the new year bring along the two-door “90” body style. From economy to luxury and compact to full-size, automakers by no means are finished with this segment. In addition to the contenders on this list, Subaru recently announced an off-road oriented “Wilderness” package coming in late 2021, Nissan dropped hints of a possible new Xterra, and Kia showed off several off-road Telluride builds in 2020, hinting that a rugged trim level could be in the works.

Desert Rated 2021 Jeep Gladiator Mojave
Story and photos by Dan Heyman
T
he Jeep Gladiator has already made massive inroads into the compact/mid-size pickup sphere. By adopting many bits of a Ram 1500’s rear end and mating all that with the unmistakable front end, big fenders and sticky-outy styling of a Jeep Wrangler, they’ve managed to create a hit that looks the part but is capable, too, scoring highly in all the departments – payload, towing – that pickups need to. The thing about Jeep, though…actually, its two things: one, they never rest on their laurels and aren’t scared to push the limit with their models and two, the Wrangler with which the Gladiator shares so much of its DNA is such a modular design that there have been all sorts of variants through the years.
So what do you do, then, if you’re Jeep with this popular half-Ram, half-Wrangler (one, I’m told, that tends to sell well above retail) and want to capitalize on its popularity as much as possible? Well, you make an even more special one, of course! The Gladiator already has a “hardcore” model with the Dana-axled, low-range ratioed Rubicon and that’s really how this Mojave (I guess they couldn’t get the rights to use the correct spelling of the Mohave Desert) starts life. Thing is, while the Gladiator Rubicon – like all Wranglers and Gladiators – is “Trail Rated”, the Mojave sees the first time we’ve seen a “Desert Rated” Jeep of any kind. So what does that mean, to be “Desert Rated”? Well, for starters, it gets tested in some of the harshest desert climes Jeep could throw at it and has come out the other side with specially-tuned Fox 64 mm internal bypass shocks with external reservoirs, special front hydraulic jounce bumpers and reinforced frame. There is also added ride height but it’s not as much as you might think, totalling a mere 25 mm, and that’s only up front. Sure, there are some fancy graphics and paint (I am a big fan of the Billet Silver Metallic shade on my tester, as well as the orange highlights around the hood lettering and various badges), stronger axles, special “performance” seats and off-road tires, but if you’re getting a Mojave because you want to get better at vehicular bouldering, well, you’ve come to the wrong party, I’m afraid. The Mojave, you see, is more about rapid progress over sand dunes and loose gravel paths, as opposed to winch-recommended off-road trails. That’s why there isn’t all that much more lift, the 20.9-degree breakover angle is hardly different than that of a Rubicon and the same goes for the departure and approach angles. This, then, is the “sporty” version of the Gladiator. Which, as you’ll
24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2021
find out as soon as you set off, actually pays dividends on the polar opposite of the surfaces we’ve been talking about – smooth concrete. You see, if you’re blasting through sand dunes, you’re not going to want the kind of heavy-axle, massive wheel articulation tendencies required for technical off-roading. Indeed, you want a chassis that works fast over smooth terrain and that actually translates, to my surprise, to the Mojave offering a better ride on the highway than does the Rubicon. That’s a pretty big deal, considering “ride quality” has never been one of the Wrangler’s or Gladiator’s strong suits. After all, that just wouldn’t be “it’s a Jeep thing” enough, now would it? As a result, the Mojave is much more Ford F-150 Raptor in terms of ride. Which, for me, is a good thing because I would never consider myself a card-carrying member of the “cult of Jeep.” I know people like this – people that aren’t truly happy unless they emerge from any given drive half caked in mud and with their teeth still rattling – and if I were to try and hang with them, I’d be laughed off the trail faster than you can say Desert Rated. It’s also worth noting, at this juncture, that the Mojave starts at the exact same MSRP -- $52,383 – as does the Rubicon. So what we really have here, are two variations on a theme and that’s surprise number two – or something – for me when it comes to the Mojave. I thought for sure it would cost more and act as a halo model but that’s just not really true.
FEB/MAR 2021 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 25
At any rate – because this was an off-road specific vehicle no matter how you slice it, I was sure to tackle a few logging and forestry roads in order to see what this beast was really about. While we’d lost our chance to actually run one of these through the desert due to travel restrictions, the roads I had in mind filled in nicely - a little wet, soggy and mountainous to be sure but they are gravelly and fast and so the Mojave could stretch its legs. Power, as it happens, comes courtesy of a Pentastar V6 and is exactly the same as every other non-diesel Gladiator: 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. And stretch it did, positively chewing up and spitting out everything I threw at it, from loose gravel, to puddles deep enough to send a tidal wave of muddy water careening over those big fenders and boxy hood. It was slippery, wet, and loose-surfaced but it didn’t matter; this was tiddlywinks for this truck and one whole heck of a lot of fun. So much so, in fact, that the only way I could see myself having more fun in these conditions would be if I’d had a manual transmission, which is what you get as standard in the Mojave. You may think that a strange allowance, but if you go by what Toyota says about their Tacoma – and one of the Mojave’s biggest rivals, especially in TRD Pro form – people like manual small pickups. So that option is kept around. Other than that, it’s all Gladiator - full-locking differential, ultravertical dash with window controls mounted thereon, removable doors, roof and even windshield (not sure how that would work for a day of steady dune bashing, though), Uconnect infotainment (with special off-road info) and even a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The bed, meanwhile, is short at just five feet but can be extended, to a degree, by locking the tailgate in a half-open position. In the Mojave, though, I don’t imagine that really being 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2021
a bother; as long as it can fit some extra rubber, you’re all good. Although they have stamped some “motorcycle treads” at the front of the bed, ostensibly because if you line your bike up juuust right, you can fit it in there. In all seriousness, that could matter because this Mojave is actually a very good all-‘round truck. You get the better performance on the highway and in town, you get those cool looks (that, for some reason, have the Mojave looking slightly less awkward than other Gladiators, which appear overlong), all the fast off-road goodies and a bit of a pioneer in that it’s the first-ever “Desert Rated” Jeep. Would a broader engine choice be nice? The option to choose the turbo 2.0-litre four the Wrangler gets? Perhaps. How about a shorter cab, and longer bed? Maybe, but that’s a bigger deal for other Gladiators, methinks. Indeed, considering the price, the goodies and yes, the cachet, the Mojave is actually a really intriguing option. Much more so than I thought it would be, and the remarkable thing is that it’s attractive not because it’s the most hardcore of Gladiators, as I originally thought, but because it actually turned out to be the most well-rounded. It’s the one I’d have.
