Nikola Motors to Offer Fully Electric UTV Starting in 2018

ikola Motors has been developing a fully electric UTV all-terrain vehicle and recently, news has come down that it will be available starting in early 2018. Given the times we live in, it should come as no surprise that an all-electric UTV has been in the works, but there is some surprise when you look at the Zeroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s specifications. The Zero offers a whopping 555 horsepower with 490 lb-ft of torque that offers a 0-60 mph time of just 3.9 seconds. It is offered with 75kWh, 100 kWh or 125 kWh batteries, which produce an all-electric range between 100-200 miles (appox. 160-321 km) depending on the battery size chosen. The onboard accessories in the Zero draw power from the rooftop solar panel and are IP67 waterproof rated and can allegedly be completely submerged in mud or water and drive out, no problem. Chinese Automaker Expresses Interest in Purchasing Jeep Brand A recent report from Automotive News suggests that Chinese auto manufacturer Great Wall Motor has reached out to FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) to discuss acquiring the Jeep brand, which accounts for nearly half of FCA’s sales. formal talks or signed any sort of deal with FCA. FCA itself has neither confirmed nor denied the reports but it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility as there have been reports of other automakers enquiring about the possible purchase of FCA, with some even suggesting speculation of General Motors possibly making a play. Nothing will change within Jeep until something concrete happens, but it should be no surprise that the company would be attractive to possible buyers, as it continues to produce extremely capable vehicles that certainly seem to sell well in every market they’re in.

JL Wrangler Forum has recently claimed to confirm a few more details regarding the new Jeep Wrangler JL set to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. Firstly, the report claims that a turbodiesel engine option for the new Wrangler has been officially confirmed, and while obviously not much regarding specifications have been confirmed, it is expected to be a version of the V6 EcoDiesel engine found in the Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. Other engine options for the JL will reportedly be an updated 3.6L Pentastar V6 or an optional 2.0L turFCA’s current EcoDiesel engine. bocharged inline-4 which will be paired to a standard automatic transmission. FCA or Jeep themselves have released no information regarding the new JL or its engine options, but JL Wrangler Forum has seemed to be all over inside scoops regarding the JL throughout the year.

Off-Road Plus is continuing to support local off-road clubs and associations and have recently entered a sponsorship agreement with the Red River Jeep Club (RRJC) which is a family-friendly, Jeep enthusiast’s club located in Winnipeg, Manitoba and registered with MAAC, which is the Manitoba Association of Auto Clubs. Members meet on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss and plan past and future events. RRJC is actively involved supporting charitable events in the community such as Children’s Wish, Christmas Cheer Board and toy drives. Where possible, RRJC also supports locally run businesses by planning Jeep Mobs. Jeep Mobs involve many of the members attending the business for dinner, snacks and good company. Off-roading can fluctuate from winding sand trails to unforgiving rock as Manitoba is fortunate to have a wide variety of trails that offer a bit of everything for all skill sets and vehicle builds. ife is good at the top of the food chain. For years, the offroad market has experienced unparalleled growth. Classics like the Suzuki Samurai, Toyota Land Cruiser, Isuzu Trooper, and Land Rover Discovery were crawling Canada’s vast terrain long before Jeep JK blueprints spawned a contemporary 4x4 movement. Though the hardcore performance and no-frills styling of yesteryear command a loyal following, product development for the modern off-road aftermarket has elevated the entire segment beyond expectation. And now, it’s time to double down. An attractive lineup of 2018 4x4 vehicles will serve as the muse for new product development in off-road accessory categories such as suspension, wheels, tires, lighting, recovery, cargo management, and exterior vehicle protection, but eager enthusiasts will need to hold out until after this year’s SEMA Show for more detailed product specs. 10 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017

Likewise, companies such as Rugged Ridge and Smittybilt have been quick to market with creative upgrades that are useful in helping off-roaders maximize every cubic inch of space, from rooftop tents to LED and Hi-Lift jack hood-mounting solutions. We suspect similar “Aha!” innovations to come out of this year’s SEMA Show.

Moab Sand Flats

ne of the most popular areas in Moab is the Sand Flats Recreation area. Sand Flats is accessed through town via E 300 S Rd. to Fourth St. then S Mill Creek Rd. which turns into Sand Flats Rd. The area can be seen from town with the towering La Sal mountains in the background. Following Sand Flats Rd. brings you straight into the BLM gate where a small $5.00 fee gives you access to the entire rec area for a day and $10.00 for a full week. Hells Revenge trail was our destination, one of the best slick rock 4x4 trails in Moab. While the trail is a mere 6.5 miles long, you will experience some of the best “fin” driving Moab has to offer. Sand Flats also contains a host of less-extreme trails such as Fins & Things, Porcupine Rim, and Mill Creek Rim west & east. Sand Flats is also home to the slick rock bike trail (pedal and powered), which intertwines throughout the Hells Revenge trail. This 6 (out of 10)-rated trail starts right after the BLM gate on the left in a small staging area and covers the well-known obstacles including the Escalator, Hell’s Gate, Tip Over Challenge and the Hot Tubs. The best part of this trail is the fact there are bypasses to almost all the difficult spots, but don’t let that fool you; the drops and steep climbs make approach and departure angles critical to get on and off the endless steep climbs as you go up and down the sand stone fins. 22 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017

Glen, my wheeling partner, had no issues with his lifted Jeep JK. I, however, was in a bone stock Toyota TRD Pro and relied on the tow hitch to keep the rear bumper safe as we dragged it all day long. If you run this trail, you will see many of these scratches at the bottom of each fin, and we added quite a few! Getting onto many of

the steep climbs took good tire placement to keep the front bumper from bashing every sand stone fin as well. Besides the amazing views over the endless stone fins, a side loop takes you right to the edge of the cliff overlooking the Colorado River and to the Hellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Revenge side loop â&#x20AC;&#x201C; which we bypassed on this day, saving the TRD Pro for other wheeling adventures. The trail is designated one way, and is clearly marked both with paint marks on the rocks and in various spots, trail signs to keep you

Despite the large number of Jeeps in Moab for the Safari, our late start meant we were one of a very few vehicles on the trail along with a couple of tour groups of quads, a couple of side-by-sides, we say no more than ten Jeeps. Mickie’s Hot Tub, generally a hang out spot for those not willing to risk a back flip onto solid sand stone, was deserted and Glen took a shot at one of the smaller hot tubs and still needed me to give him a tug out the top, so there are challenges for everyone on Hells Revenge – though it generally is not rated stock Jeep-friendly. We had a great time on the trail and while it has been quite a few years since we tackled this one, it won’t be such a long gap before we visit again. That may be the best part of Moab - with so many trails all over the area, you forget which ones you have been on, and they are always an amazing surprise when you get back to them. Can’t wait to bring a more capable vehicle back next year – Moab has this ability to draw you back year in and year out! Planning a trip? Here are some great resources to check out first. headed in the right direction. The main giveaways are the two lines of black tire marks which wind their way back and forth across the sand fins. One of the most disconcerting parts of this trail is reaching the top of a fin and not being able to see anything over the other side – we got out a few times to check! There was a lot of lifting our butts in our seats to try and see over the hood to make sure we were lined up for the drop on the other side of the steep fins.

utting and trimming JK flares is a pretty common occurrence when lifting and fitting JKs with bigger tires. But even a cut flare or many of the other aftermarket versions still use a hard plastic that does not give or flex well. Also, most of those aftermarket flares are only available in full sets so when you do break one off-road, you’re stuck with three spares to get one replacement. I’ve known Jason and Mike from MCE Fenders for quite a while. Their approach to JK flares and their TJ & YJ flares came out of years of trail wheeling in the Northwest where trees meet you at every turn and will happily peel all the plastic off the outside of your Jeep.

Rather than go thicker, stronger and harder, they went the flexible, twist-out-of-the-way route with their product line. The finish to the material looks so good, there is no need for paint. I’ve even had the honour of driving over several sets in my 40-inch tire-equipped 1-ton TJ, and if you get a chance, check their YouTube channel - they seem to have just as much fun trying to destroy their own flares as they do hitting the trails. They have a no-fine-print lifetime warranty, unlike many of those other guys out there. MCE expects you to abuse and bash their products, and they will stand behind them. 3. They come off pretty easy once you figure out a good hard pull upwards and outwards pops the clips out of the factory flares. None of these clips are reused for the MCE flares, so breaking one or two doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter.

4. As you can see, this JK has typical trail damage already to the front marker lights. The new flares, being flexible, will just push out of the way when bumping trees, brush and rocks.

5. Out back, both the outer and inner stock fenders are discarded. The MCE flares are clamped in place and several new holes are needed to secure the flare. To reduce rusting at the drilled holes, coat the new self-tapping screws in silicone when screwing them in.

Pop-Up Camper

he SylvanSport GO trailer – well, it is a trailer, however at first glance I wasn’t sure what it was meant to be – that realization took a few minutes. By definition, it’s a pop-up camper but with a twist. The tent is housed in the hard-case that doubles as a roof while the floor, when in transit, is meant to carry whatever your outdoor adventures demand. Picture, an ATV, kayaks, mountain bikes, boards or whatever. SylvanSport was founded in 2004 in Brevard, NC, for one reason (the company says): to make outdoor adventure acces-

sible. What started as an idea to create the most innovative pop-up camper has evolved into a line of the best-designed camping and gear trailers ever made. Once I circled the GO a few times, I got it. Yes, it’s an RV – a nice overnighter for two or even four – but in reality, it’s simply a means to an end - the end being whatever sport or outdoor activity you are really into. The capacity of the upper rack (roof-top loading) is 160 lb. I chose a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek as a tow vehicle. With its interior cargo space and X-drive feature, the Subaru fits this lifestyle nicely. It’s about gear and access – off-road that is. You can negotiate rougher terrain with a combination like this, giving you access to campsites off the beaten path. The key to this Houdini-like trailer are the four telescoping posts that raise the hard-shell roof – first to accommodate whatever you are hauling on the flat utility trailer bed. Second, once unloaded, open the case and set up the tent within the frame created by the posts and hard-shell top. Simple. Unlike a pop-up tent trailer which is either open or closed, the GO can be configured three different ways to create various carrying options. In Travel Mode, GO can carry six bikes or kayaks, plus gear. In Transport Mode, GO can carry up to a dozen bikes or kayaks, even motorcycles or an ATV. When you carry your bikes on top, you can take advantage of the full 39 cubic-feet of storage capacity on the deck. There’s also a lockable, waterproof storage box with 9 cubic feet of capacity that doubles as a cooler on the front. The trailer is built with a powder-coated, heavy-gauge aluminum frame, sprung on a single axle with wide tires and sports LED lights. The tent setup requires no more than 10 minutes and there are four blow-up mattresses included. So, now that you get what the GO does, here is what it doesn’t do. It does not offer systems for water, propane, electrical or a toilet. However, the aftermarket does have options for those wanting to customize their GO. This is camping just one step removed from the ground – but it does have its place in the wide world of the RV lifestyle.
