Chevrolet Reveals the All-New Colorado ZR2 Bison

C

hevrolet has recently revealed the all-new Colorado ZR2 Bison which joins the midsize truck’s lineup as a performance variant, and is Chevy’s first collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV), which is a premium off-road manufacturer. The new Bison model builds on the already off-road-oriented Colorado ZR2 and takes its capability to a new level. The ZR2 Bison features five skid plates which cover the engine oil pan, fuel tank, transfer case and front and rear locking differentials in order to protect these elements while driving over rough and rocky terrain. The front and rear both feature AEV-designed stamped steel bumpers with the front bumper featuring winch provisions and fog lights, while the rear boasts recovery points integrated into it. A flow-through “CHEVROLET” lettered grille replaces the usual bowtie while 31-in. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires wrap around the Bison-specific 17x8-in. aluminum wheels to give it a more aggressive look and to even further increase off-road competence. Bison decals are featured on the bed sides while an AEV Bison logo is featured on the tailgate, floor liners and head restraints. The ZR2 Bison will duplicate the full equipment list of the Colorado ZR2 including the aforementioned front and rear locking differentials, Multimatic DSSV dampers, off-road locker protection, cast-iron control arms and Autotrac transfer case. Also offered are a modified rear axle with a 3.42 ratio, front and rear tracks widened by 3.5-in., and a factory suspension lift that is a full 2-in. over a Colorado Z71. Additional Bison options include the 2.8L Duramax Turbo-diesel engine paired to a six-speed auto transmission and a choice of crew or extended cab configurations. The snorkel featured in the photos will be available as a third-party accessory from AEV and is ideal for air filtration while driving on dusty trails. The 2019 Colorado ZR2 Bison is set to go on sale in January of next year. OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

Ford Adds Cruise Control-like Trail Control to the 2019 F-150 Raptor The refreshed 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor has added a new feature called Trail Control, which is basically like cruise control for off-road driving. The feature will manage throttle and braking which allows drivers to focus on steering through challenging off-road terrain. Activated at speeds from 2 km/h to 32 km/h, Trail Control is able to help overcome steep obstacles by automatically directing torque to each wheel then braking to smoothly bring down the truck on the other side. Additionally, it can also help in digging the truck out if happens to get stuck in extreme sand. The function can be operated in all 4x4 modes and will be included on the 2019 Raptor when it becomes available later this year, and will also be available on the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger which is set to arrive at dealerships early next year.

Equipped For Anything Search and Rescue teams require reliable and capable vehicles equipped to handle any situation

Story and photos by Spencer Whitney

They ask so little, but give so much”

Ten years ago, Ian Mackenzie and his wife learned first-hand what it’s like to be extracted by a Search and Rescue team. When a sunny afternoon hike in California turned in to an unexpected blizzard, they became stranded at the top of a mountain. Thankfully a local SAR agency was able to find them before the night was through. If you pay attention to the media in Western Canada, stories like this are almost a daily occurrence. Ian, who now operates vehicle lighting manufacturer BrightSource with partners, decided recently that he was in the perfect position to give back to SAR agencies right here at home. Being prepared in the backcountry is essential, and any off-roader will tell you that having the right equipment and supplies can make all the difference. However, many others who enjoy the wilderness do not have the luxury of being able to carry more gear than is necessary, so when disaster strikes – bad weather, an injury, or simply getting lost – there’s less room for error. As daylight dwindles and temperatures drop, rescuers know every passing minute counts. That’s where high-power LED lighting makes all the difference. Light is an essential tool for any rescue, whether for seeing the road ahead clearly or providing task lighting at a rescue scene.

Adventuresmart.ca’s guide to Trip Planning: • Plan your route; Leave a trip plan with someone • Know and stay within your limits • Take the essentials (Flashlight, fire making kit, extra provisions, first aid, etc) • Travel with a companion • Ensure everyone with you understands what to do in an emergency • Be aware of cellular and satellite coverage in the area • Avoid wildlife conflicts • In an emergency… Don’t Panic, Stop, Stay Put, Seek Shelter, Signal for Help

While most of the public is aware of what Search and Rescue groups do, many people do not realize that SAR teams and their support staff are made up entirely of volunteers – everyday people who dedicate thousands of hours a year to training, education, and rescue operations – and these teams will never ask for any kind of payment for a rescue, ever. In British Columbia, there are currently 80 SAR groups consisting of over 2,500 volunteers, each with different operational requirements. Urban agencies may respond to a high volume of rescues due to population size and proximity to backcountry, while rural teams could have massive areas to cover when answering calls. These groups cover every square kilometre of the province in one way or another, to ensure that no rescue goes unanswered. “We’re not sure everyone recognizes that these organizations are built on an incredibly strong volunteer base,” says Ian. “These folks are called out at any time - seemingly always at night - and respond with no hesitation to the call for help.” Many rescues also take place 12 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

on foot – SAR teams are usually called in to areas that are simply not accessible to first responders. In order to reach some of the difficult terrain that hikers, hunters and travelers find themselves stranded in, SAR teams require reliable and capable vehicles equipped for any kind of on- and off-road situation to get them to trail heads and access areas. These are everyday trucks and 4x4s, but with special considerations for rescue operations. BrightSource has so far donated 80 sets of their LED lighting products to SAR teams across B.C. Some of the first teams to be provided with new lighting have praised the usefulness of having task-specific units. When mounted properly, wide-beam ditch lights can see in to the brush at the side of a road, useful for spotting evidence of downed ORV riders who’ve gone off a trail. High-power light bars provide a clear view of the road ahead, and can light up a rescue area. Other vehicle modifications like rugged, durable tires and custom equipment enclosures are a must-have for everyday operations, allowing essential rescue gear to be securely transported

SAR volunteer contributes, too. “In the past few years, the BCSARA media team has worked very hard to raise the profile of the 80 groups, their 2,500 volunteers and ground SAR program in B.C.,” says public information officer Chris Mushumanski. “In that time we have seen tremendous growth in our online presence and the public very much appreciates the work the volunteers do responding to 1,600+ tasks each year around the province.”

to search sites. However, most of this equipment comes at great cost – truck bodies for SAR use can easily cost $100,000 or more, and that’s before the addition of accessories and rescue equipment. Although all of the SAR groups in British Columbia receive some measure of government support, there are many luxuries that just can’t be accounted for in budgets. Throughout the years, many local companies – such as Arc’teryx – have provided high-end equipment to help enhance the abilities of SAR teams. Ian noticed these relationships and approached the provincial coordinating body – B.C. Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA) – to help distribute BrightSource lights to agencies across the province. BCSARA’s mission is to raise awareness of every Search and Rescue group in B.C., lobby for funding from government, help integrate the operations of all 80 teams with local, provincial and first-responder agencies, and educate the public on backcountry safety. “We often hear about the North Shore crew, because of the frequency of calls and proximity to the Metro Vancouver area, but the other 79 groups answer the call with great regularity as well” says Ian. BCSARA ensures that the public is aware of what every

However, Ian isn’t satisfied with just his own contribution of products to SAR groups across B.C: “Our call out is to other suppliers in the automotive aftermarket and to the public in general, asking them to consider supporting these ‘everyday heroes’ in any way possible. The 80 groups across BC have a wide range of needs and demands they face when responding to a SAR task, so there is no one item that comes to mind.” When asked, SAR team members said that there’s a great demand not only for new equipment, but also for new members. Since most volunteers are active police, fire and medical professionals, they tend to move around the province in search of job opportunities, which can sometimes leave busy SAR teams with limited crews. If there is one important lesson to be learned, it’s certainly covered in Adventure Smart, a national education and outreach program sponsored by SAR organizations across the country. The importance of being prepared in the backcountry, regardless of the type of activity, is essential. Having a plan and basic survival gear will greatly increase the chances you are found by a SAR team if you get lost or stranded and need help. “No one plans to get lost,” says Ian, “but the Search and Rescue groups across Canada plan well to provide effective and life-saving help when called upon.” If a company would like to support BCSARA they can contact Chris Armstrong at marketing@bcsara.com and he will work with them to allocate the support they would like to provide. Individuals can make contributions by contacting their local SAR group or by donating to BCSARA. Information is available at bcsara.com and adventuresmart.ca.

FEATURE: BORDER STATE ANTICS

Straddle the Line

A list of some cool off-roading spots to check out in the Western and Central Border States Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko

T

rail runs provide an outlet for mankind and machine to connect with nature, lay down fresh tracks, and replenish the soul. How about you load up the 4x4, and I’ll meet you at the border for some memorable off-road antics? With far too many trailblazing options to name, the focus was narrowed to western and central border states for Canadians to visit. And believe you me, there are some rare gems on this list.

Washington

First up, a crawl through the notoriously breathtaking Pacific Northwest. There is no shortage of tourist attractions to explore, but these off-road-friendly trails definitely should be included as part of the itinerary.

Spokane County ORV Parks: Visit Spokane and you’ll have access to two county-maintained ORV parks and a 600-acre state forest. Liberty Lake ORV Area offers 16 miles of nice trails for motorcycle and ATV use, with a camping park nearby. Airway Motocross Park is a racing and riding facility that provides regularly groomed tracks for all skill levels, with a 60-site campground nearby. And Riverside State Park ORV Area provides a good time for all vehicle types with wooded trails, hill climbs, and sand areas. Trails are not as well-maintained as the other parks but are open year-round. Additionally, there is ample parking, shelter, and restroom availability on site, as well as a training area.

Capitol State Forest: Southwest of Olympia, Capitol State Forest offers roughly 100 miles of trails spread over 90,000+ acres of exquisiteness that is only home to the state of Washington. It’s a multi-use forest with areas designated for both motorized and non-motorized activity. Motorcycles and ATVs are welcome (other vehicles are prohibited); off-road trails are regularly maintained by both the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and various recreational clubs. Campsites are available nearby on a first come, first serve basis. A Washington Discover Pass is required and must be purchased before visiting. Walker Valley ORV Area: This recreational area located just east of Mount Vernon offers over 30 miles of dedicated trails for ATVs and motorcycles, with 10 miles allocated for 4x4 use. Plenty of puddles, rocks, ruts, and tree roots means there is a lot of fun to be had for intermediate riders. Trails are well-maintained and there is primitive camping available. A Washington Discover Pass is required, but you can purchase one on-site. 20 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

Hatcher Pass: Twenty minutes outside Wasilla is a 300,000-acre mix of state, borough, and privately-owned land known as the Hatcher Pass Management Area. The east side, managed by the DNR, provides plenty of off-road trails and 4x4 loops through July (sometimes longer, weather-permitting). Snowmobile trails are available in the winter months, which adds an entirely different level of enjoyment if you’re into the powersports scene. Regardless of the time of year, there are a multitude of seasonal outdoor activities and the views of the Talkeetna Mountain Range are spectacular.

Idaho

Alaska

“Even the most dedicated Alaskan riders could spend their entire lives trying to traverse every trail, back road, and park in their home state and not even come close,” published The Engine Block. We lined up three of our favourite 4x4 destinations, with hopes that you’ll decide to visit the greatest frontier and stay awhile… a long while, to explore all that this state and its untouched beauty have to offer.

Bald Mountain: Stretching for 22 miles through Wasilla, Alaska, this trail offers breathtaking views of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley as well as plenty of muddy paths for off-road antics. Difficulty falls in the moderate to difficult range, with some rough wooded areas and heavy mud that require technical skill. All vehicles are welcome, but expect to climb steep hills and cover water passes. One of the side trails offers access to a wrecked plane that crashed into the mountain in 1956, killing all passengers. There’s an excursion for ya! Klutina Lake Trail: Located in the tiny 300+ person town of Copper Center, this 23-mile 4x4 trail offers off-road access to the majestic Klutina River and Klutina Lake. All vehicles are welcome, but high-clearance is strongly recommended. Since these are native,

Among the top places to visit are Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Lake Coeur d’Alene, and Craters of the Moon National Monument, which is “a lunar-like landscape” created by volcanic eruptions between 15,000 and 20,000 years ago. This region of lava flows can be explored on sign-posted circular routes. Although it has not erupted in the last two millennia, this area is still geologically active,” explained PlanetWare. Add these three off-road hotspots to the trip itinerary!

Owyhee Front: This large area around Melba offers a wide variety of off-roading for all types of vehicles and difficulty levels. The terrain is mostly desert, with plenty of rocky obstacles and canyons to keep things interesting. With over nine trailheads giving access to hundreds of miles of roads, there’s a good chance you’ll run out of gas before you run out of road. South Hills: A popular spot just south of Twin Falls, South Hills offers over 50 miles of designated trails. Several camping sites are available nearby, or you can take the Diamondfield Jack trailhead and ride all the way to nearby Jackpot, Nevada for good grub and lodging. All vehicles are welcome, but 4x4s are restricted to certain forest service roads. Terrain is mostly loose dirt and varies from desert hills to forested trails. Independence Creek Trail System: With over 20 miles of single-track forested trails, this part of the Idaho Panhandle offers a welcome challenge for the experienced rider. Trails cut through the Coeur d’Alene National Forest, with many water crossings and wildlifesighting opportunities. No RV or trailer parking is available—meaning camping options are limited, but so are the crowds. Hunting, fishing, boating, and hiking can all be found nearby, as can elk, porcupines, and coyotes!

Roughrider OHV Trail

Montana

The term “Big Sky Country” originated in the early 1960s with promotion of the Montana State Highway Department. Its reference is to the unobstructed skyline that’s part of the magnificent landscape. Cowboy turned poet Mike Logan once wrote, “I love everything about Montana. I still feel like I’m spending every day in heaven.” Though off-roading isn’t permitted inside Yellowstone National Park, there are a number of trails surrounding it. Mostly in Wyoming, the park does spread into parts of Montana and Idaho as well. Aside from the three trail recommendations listed below to breathe in the big-sky experience, add Yellowstone to the bucket list. The famous Old Faithful (as well as the hundreds of animal species, including bears, wolves, bison, elk, and antelope) is something you have to see to believe.

Ringing Rocks Trail Drive: Just outside Butte is this 12.7-mile forest trail. Recommended for higher clearance 4x4s or ATVs, the road is rocky and rutted enough to receive a moderate rating. Enjoy the ride and be sure to check out the Ringing Rocks at the end—a unique natural wonder of boulders that chime when lightly tapped with a hammer. Excellent activity for the family that off-roads together. Koocanusa Sand Dunes and Trail System: Available in the spring, when water levels are low, is this special area of play pits just south of the Canadian border (trails are available year-round). Sand dunes range from three-foot bumps to 40-foot hills and nearly all vehicles are welcome, as long as they’re registered. Camp Creek Recreation Area: Located just outside the historic mining town of Zortman, Camp Creek offers two campgrounds and a free day use area with access to over 100 miles of off-road trails. Most are hard-packed and wind through the Little Rocky Mountains.

North Dakota

Theodore Roosevelt National Park, International Peace Garden, World’s Largest Buffalo, and Devils Lake are a few of the many outdoor attractions in this fine border state. Bring the kids for a family-friendly vacation that’s full of rich history, and hit up a couple of great trail rides, too!

Roughrider OHV Trail: Open year-round with 16.5 miles of scenic views along the Missouri River, is this old railroad bed turned off-road trail. Motorcycles, 4x4s, ATVs, and side-by-sides are welcome to trek the land. There are plenty of camping and other amenities available as well, so come, stay awhile, and enjoy mid-western hospitality. Kimball Bottoms OHV Area: With over 400 acres of trails and play areas, this land is also home to plenty of fishing, boating, swimming, and camping. All vehicle types are welcome, but Jeeps and ATVs are the most popular attendees. The area is prone to flooding and often hosts training for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (who manage the land), so check availability before visiting.

Minnesota

Take the North Shore scenic route, which connects many of the top state parks in Minnesota, including Split Rock Lighthouse, Tettegouche, and Grand Portage State Park. “Waterfalls, rocky cliffs, and great views of the seemingly never-ending Lake Superior accompany the long drive,” stated PlanetWare. Stop by the Mall of America to load up on gear and prepare to hit the trails in Big Aspen and Appleton.

Big Aspen Recreation Area: Maintained by the US Forest Service, this area of 21 miles of trails is excellent for beginners. Mostly built of old logging roads and railroad grades, the land offers a range of difficulty levels and plenty of beautiful scenery. Motorcycles, 4x4’s, ATVs, and side-by-sides are welcome. Appleton Area Recreational Park: The recently-expanded Appleton Area Recreational Park offers 330 acres for off-road antics that span all vehicle types. There are over 20 miles of trails that range in difficulty, as well as a motocross practice track. The park is only open for day use, but camping can be found nearby.

Minnesota

Regardless of the direction you decide to point those wheels, anywhere on this list (and surely the hundreds of options unable to be covered in a single feature), will serve up trail-ride pleasure for the entire caravan. OCT/NOV 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 23

ROAD TEST: 2018 JEEP WRANGLER JL

Exceeding Expectations

We had yet another chance to get behind the wheel of the all-new Jeep Wrangler JL

Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde, additional photos courtesy of FCA Canada

A

fter what seems like years of speculation, fake renderings all over the Internet and many cloaked spy pictures of testing the new Jeep, the Wrangler started hitting dealers this past spring. It is rare in the auto industry these days to have so much hype and anticipation over a new model. Has it met expectations or has the honeymoon period worn off already? Known as the JL, the new Wrangler, like the previous JK version, comes in both 2-door and 4-door models and has two roof options - hardtop and soft-top. The hard top panels remove above the driver and front passenger for open air driving, suspension is quad coil springs over front and rear solid axle assemblies. Doors are removable and the engine is a 3.6-litre V6 carried over from the last model. Sounds an awful lot like the last Jeep JK doesn’t it? So what has changed? The 3.6 V6 now comes with an 8-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual. There is a new transfer case option, which my tester Sahara was equipped with, that is a part-time 4WD system which senses slip and transfers power front or back as needed – a good snowy winter road addition for sure. The window angle has been changed to reduce drag and wind noise. The hood has been raised to be more flat. An all new interior looks modern, though there is not a lot you can do with a flat Jeep dash. Lots of new electronic gizmos including back up camera, hands free, navigation, extra power outlets for all your devices, heated seats, heated steering wheel etc… to try and keep up with the Joneses in the automotive world. A new soft top, easy-to-fold front window, a rear integrated roll cage over all of the passenger areas, and lots of new bends in the steel all add some fresh style. A turbo four-cylinder is standard and a diesel option is on the horizon, so this is the first time since the 2006 TJ that more than one engine has been offered in a Wrangler. 24 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

What has not changed? It still drives like a Jeep on the road. Wind noise at highway speed is terrible. The voice activation system actually told me to roll up the windows and turn off the heater as it could not hear me, then turned off. And I was driving a hard top– needless to say the windows were up and everything was turned off. You feel every bump in the road, and many pull at the steering wheel in your hand, making you drive like you’re over .08. I had a Mustang The 3.6L V6 remains and comes with 285 hp. Two more engine options - a four-cylinder turbo currently available, and an upcoming diesel - make for some of the best engine choices ever in a Wrangler.

GT the week before – and it took bumps and potholes far better – but some may say these are the quirks we all get used to, driving a Wrangler. This is a two-handed driver at all times. The 3.6L engine is a capable power plant and remains unchanged from the JK model. The added two gears in the automatic are welcome and it feels like there is a right gear for the engine at all times.

Quite a few changes to the front axle. CV boots rather than U Joints for the axles, aluminum knuckles, upgraded ball joints, a disconnect system on the long side axle and the t rod and drag link have some fresh bends.

OCT/NOV 2018 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 25

The previous version suspension was stellar off-road and little change has taken place visually when you look under the Jeep. Like the JK, the drive shafts are a fluted steel style with CV heads on the end, which will need to be upgraded to something far more durable for any serious off-roading or adding taller suspension lifts. The front axle assemble has some changes. Back is the front axle disconnect system of Jeeps of years past presumably to try and eke out a few more ounces of fuel mileage. The disconnect is in the long side axle tube which is a larger diameter and will work in conjunction with your 4x4 system like the old vacuum systems did, though I see electrical connections on this new disconnect. The front axles also have CV-style axles and rubber boots on our tester model – though I did see in a Dynatrac video of their Code 1 build, the axle they pulled out had U Joints in the front – not sure the difference. I can see sticks and branches jamming in here and tearing those boots

– time will tell if the Aftermarket needs to come up with a stronger boot similar to the RCV axle boots. Axle knuckles are aluminum, and steering geometry looks similar to models past. Obvious tweaks have taken place, which seem to be for the better. These axles are not backward compatible to a JK axle. Both front and rear axles sport next-generation gear sets; axle tubes are a different size etc… Wheel bolt pattern remains the same, so if you’re upgrading and keeping your wheels from your JK they will fit just fine. More room has been added in the wheel openings and the new style of flare is two pieces and seems to be easy to pull apart to add

even more tire room rather than the typical cutting and trimming JK owners have been doing for the past 10 years.

Underneath, we see some JK-type components in the suspension arms, the loop in the exhaust to equal out the exhaust length for the left and right sides of the engine, and the fluted CV drive shafts. 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

I’ll sum it up as an improved if not ground breaking new model. It’s still a Jeep Wrangler, and drives like a Jeep Wrangler, on- and off-road. It will offer all the off-road prowess a Jeep owner wants which is currently uncontested in the mid-sized SUV market, and the aftermarket will fill your garage with all the customizable parts you can think of. It also comes with all the road quirks most do not look for, but you can live with those to have the Wrangler you want with that top-off driving experience we are all used to. Now we can all await the new Jeep JT truck!

WRANGLER INSTALLS

Our 2017 Wrangler was completely stock and although it is an already off-road capable vehicle right out of the box, the lift and new tire and wheel package will give us even more capability and a much more rugged appearance.

TECH ne of the first things many would think of when starting a Jeep build O is a lift kit and a larger tire and wheel package, which is just where we decided to begin with our 2017 Jeep Wrangler Sport project. This will

immediately change the look of the Jeep and will add even more off-road prowess to an already extremely capable vehicle. We decided to first reach out to our friends at OMIX-ADA, which is the parent company of both Rugged Ridge and Alloy USA, for the lift kit, wheels and an upgraded spare tire carrier to make up for added weight of the larger spare tire and wheel. Henk and his team were generous enough to hook us up with an Alloy USA 2.5-in. lift kit, a set of 17x9 Rugged Ridge Trail Runner Classic wheels, and a Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD Tire carrier. We decided to go with the 2.5-in. lift kit as it better suited our needs for the Jeep and didn’t require other things like relocation brackets for the track bar. This would allow us to clear room for 35-in. tires, provide us with more ground clearance, and instantly provide a more rugged appearance for the Jeep which is exactly what we were going for. When choosing the wheels, the black Trail Runner Classics immediately caught our eyes as they will definitely provide a classic look, as the name states, and will provide an appearance upgrade over stock without being too flashy. When it came time to choose the tires, we called our friends down at

Nitto and were lucky enough to get our hands on a set of 35x12.50 Ridge Grapplers. These tires provide a middle ground between your traditional mud-terrain and all-terrain tires, and leaves you with the best of both worlds in the sense that you have a smoother, quieter ride on-road than a full mud-terrain but with a more aggressive, off-road capable tread pattern than a full all-terrain. As mentioned, the OMIX-ADA team was also able to provide us with a Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD Tire Carrier which provides the extra strength on the Jeep’s rear end in order to handle the weight of the new 35-in. tires and 17-in. wheels. Installation was fairly simple and in no time, we were back on the road with an entirely different look and without a noticeable difference in ride quality. The Jeep is now able to stand out from the crowd a little bit and received a huge increase in off-road capability due to the added ride height and much more capable tires. I don’t think anyone would ever call a Wrangler’s ride smooth, but after putting a few miles in after the installation we found we could hardly even tell the difference. Off-Road Plus would like to extend a huge thank you to Henk and his team at OMIX-ADA as well as Ron and Mike from Toyo/Nitto for helping us to complete the first phase of our build.

2. Starting with the front, the vehicle is raised and the tires and wheels are removed as is the bolt that secures the front track bar to the axle. Disconnect the front stabilizer bar links at the axle and then removed the stock shock absorbers.

1. The 2.5-in. Alloy USA Lift Kit all laid out and ready to go. The kit provides new coil springs and shocks for all four corners as well as brake line relocation brackets and new stabilizer bar link brackets.

5. Next, we loosened the upper and lower control arm bolts and lowered the axle down enough to remove the factory coil springs.

3. The factory brake hose bracket is then removed from the axle. We made sure to carefully pry the factory brake line bracket from the rubber hose in order to not damage it. We recommend doing this while it is still attached to the axle for leverage.

4. The front driveshaft is unbolted from the front axle and tied up and out of the way to be reattached later.

6. Making sure to leave the rubber isolators in place in the upper coil tower, we then inserted the new coil spring into place.

7. The new shock absorber is now installed, beginning with the upper hardware and followed by the lower hardware. Do not tighten the lower hardware at this time.

9. The stabilizer bar link bracket is installed to the outside of the original stabilizer bar link axle tab. The factory stabilizer bar is then attached to the new bracket.

8. Our new lower brake hose bracket is installed. We had to ensure there was enough slack in the hose when the steering wheel was at a full lock. The ABS line is attached to the new bracket using factory clips and the upper brake line bracket is reattached.

10. The process is repeated on the other side and the front driveshaft is then reconnected. The tires and wheels are put on (which we’ll show later) and we are ready to move on to the rear.

12. The track bar is disconnected from the axle and the upper and lower control arms are loosened but not removed.

11. The rear of the Jeep is lifted and the tires and wheels are removed. A jack is then placed under but does not yet raise the rear axle.

30 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

13. The factory brake hose bracket is detached. Two clips retain the wheel speed sensor wires and the forward most clip is disconnected from the arm mount.

14. The rear stabilizer bar links are disconnected and then the factory rear shock absorber is also removed.

15. The axle is lowered just enough to remove the factory coil springs. Here you can see the removed OEM part laid next to the new taller Alloy USA coil spring.

16. The new coil is inserted.

17. The new shock is also put in place and the stabilizer bar links are reconnected.

19. The process is repeated on the other side. With the front and rear suspension complete, it’s now time to go through and tighten and torque everything to factory specifications. The track bars are not to be fully tightened until the wheels and tires are mounted, which is next.

18. The rear brake hose relocation bracket is installed to the factory frame location using factory hardware. The brake hose is then attached to the bracket and the metal line is captured with the Adel clamp and then attached to the frame using a self-tapping screw.

20. Our Nitto Terra Grappler all stacked up and ready to go next to our Rugged Ridge Trail Runner Classic wheels.

22. With that complete, we took the Jeep out to get an alignment done and then moved to the rear to install the Rugged Ridge Spartacus HD Tire Carrier which you see here.

21. New TPMS sensors are installed on the wheels. The tire is then mounted on the rim and inflated. With the rubber securely on the wheels with full inflation, it’s over to the balancing machine. From there we mount the wheels and tires on the Jeep itself.

NO PROBLEMO.

BE READY FOR ANYTHING. The Nitto Grappler line of light truck tires are built so that no matter where the road takes you – it’s “No Problemo”. Nitto advanced construction and design is used on the entire Grappler line of Nitto light truck tires. Like the Ridge Grappler, that delivers a surprisingly smooth ride for a tire with a deep, aggressive tread pattern providing superior off-road grip with comfort on paved roads. Great looks, unstoppable performance, and you know it’s built right – by Nitto Tire.

25. Attach the other side of the HD Hinge Casting using factory bolts and washers.

23. First, remove the stock spare tire and remove the stock tire carrier. The process is fairly simple with the highlights being to set aside stock brake light and wiring for use later and to make sure you lock and place shims underneath the tailgate in order to hold it in place when hinges are removed.

24. Place the HD Hinge Casting in position and reuse factory screws to secure. First fasten the hinge brackets to the vehicle quarter panel then swing the door open and tighten remaining four screws. Do not yet fully tighten.

26. Position Wheel Mount Main Plate in place and install and fully tighten all eight bolts and washers.

27. Now Secure the lug plate to the main plate. Bolts should be tight enough to prevent Lug Plate from moving freely but loose enough to adjust.

28. Once brake light extension is installed, make sure spare tire sits the way you want and then fully secure all bolts to secure the lug plate to the main plate. Reconnect wires to factory third brake light. Depending on the size of your spare tire or even the year of your Wrangler, additional steps may be needed in order for the wires to reach the new location of the third brake light. Once connected we are good to go.

The finished product. Big thanks again to Omix-ADA/Rugged Ridge/Alloy USA, Nitto Tires and to everyone else who helped put it together.

They are constructed from 12-gauge steel and come standard with Iron Cross’ signature tuxedo black powder coat finish. The flares provide extra clearance for oversized tires while still maintaining OEM width tire coverage, and can be ordered as a primer-only finish in addition to the powder coat finish. WINCHIN’ OUT Good thing the top was off for an easy escape route.

Does it look like he shouldn’t be getting stuck there to anyone else?

Is the stuck guy trying to push his Jeep out from the side? That mud is definitely deeper than it looked! Always great to have that one buddy to cover you in mud when you can’t move.

Doesn’t look like there’s going to any thing to attach a winch to out there. We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool RPM Media hat! 46 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018
