Jeep has made a few minor tweaks and upgrades to the Wrangler as it enters 2020
Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of FCA Canada
hen the latest generation of the Jeep Wrangler was introduced late in 2017, it was clear that the goal W was to modernize the iconic vehicle and to do so without taking away any of the things that allow it to be so rugged and capable. Two years later, it’s clear that this was achieved as the Wrangler continues to enjoy success in terms of both sales numbers and performance due to the right mix of both clearly being found. Now entering its third full year of existence, the Wrangler JL/JLU has received a few small updates for 2020, including the eventual introduction of a new engine option and two brand new, special-edition models.
Before we get in to either of those, Jeep has updated the availability of the existing powertrain options, with the Wrangler Sport and Rubicon models now offering the 2.0L turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with engine stop-start (ESS), and the 3.6L Pentastar V6 with the mild-hybrid eTorque technology moving exclusively to the Sahara models. The engine stop-start, of course, increases efficiency by shutting down the engine when sitting at stop lights or in traffic, while the eTorque system is a mild-hybrid system that replaces the traditional alternator with a belt-driven motor generator. This provides several different functions including the engine stop-start system, a short burst of extra torque to the crankshaft and brake energy regeneration to the 48-volt battery pack that works with the generator. The Wrangler’s Advanced Safety Group now comes with auto high beams when equipped with the 8.4-in. Uconnect infotainment system, while the Wrangler Sport has added LED headlamps and fog lamps as optional equipment. As we were told at the Wrangler JL/JLU’s inaugural drive event, a diesel powertrain option would show up around 2020 and although there are no exact details on when, Jeep says that at some point in the 2020 model year, this will finally happen. Power and fuel economy numbers have yet to be disclosed, however we do know that Jeep will, of course, be utilizing the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine found in the Ram 1500. Power numbers there come in at 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft. of torque but we would imagine a slightly tuned down version for the Wrangler. Nevertheless it will undoubtedly provide you with some serious torque which may come in handy during some tough off-road situations. As mentioned, two new, special-edition models will join the fray for 2020 including the return of the always popular Wrangler Willys edition and the all-new Wrangler Black & Tan model. Both models will be based on the Wrangler Sport S and will boast unique exterior and interior content. First up, the Wrangler Willys edition returns for the first time on the JL and provides a number of features to go along with the Jeep’s Command-Trac 4x4 part-time, two-speed transfer case

with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio in order to even further increase its off-road capability. The Willys edition will feature a limited-slip rear differential, Rubicon rock rails and shocks, heavy-duty brakes and 32-in. Firestone mud-terrain tires. In addition to the actual mechanical off-road upgrades, the Willys editions will also have some special exterior design cues to highlight its rugged capability. A Willys hood decal will be featured, as will black 17in. aluminum wheels with gray pad print and a gloss black grille. Inside, all-weather mats will be provided while the standard LED headlights and fog lights further enhance the Wrangler’s capability.
with all-terrain tires, side steps, Low Gloss badging and, of course, a premium tan soft top. Inside, the Wrangler Black & Tan offers a Wizard Black instrument panel and Heritage Tan cloth seats to go along with the Technology Group
The second special-edition model to join the 2020 Wrangler lineup will be the Wrangler Black & Tan model which features a distinctive look with a nod to the vehicle’s heritage. The model will be available in all exterior colours currently offered and boasts 17-in. Machine Granite wheels
which adds Uconnect’s 7-in. touchscreen as well as a 7-in. driver’s display screen. In terms of pricing, the Wrangler Willys edition will carry a Canadian MSRP of just $2,900 over the Sport S, while the Black & Tan model comes in at just $1,995 more, and both are available on both the twoand four-door models. The Jeep Wrangler is one of those vehicles that seems like it doesn’t really need upgrades or changes to remain successful, but it’s nice to see some thought and new technology go into one of, if not the, most iconic vehicles we have ever seen. FEATURE: LIGHTING
Choosing the Right Lights Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko, photos courtesy of the manufacturers
A
light, is a light, is a light—right? Wrong.
“From headlight conversions to off-road light bars, advancements in LED technology have steadily outpaced HID and halogen. Greater brightness in a smaller package, LED solutions offer more efficiency, a longer lifespan, and when it comes to design—more flexibility,” educates The Engine Block. Furthermore, research shows that as advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and connected vehicle technologies (CVT) gain in popularity, the lighting industry will advance right alongside it—particularly compact, efficient LEDs.
4x4 accessorizers are more likely to purchase lighting upgrades than virtually any other group, as these mods are usually integral to improving off-road trail safety,” states The Engine Block. Fact: the lighting market is exploding, thanks to superior technology, new products, and expanded applications for an ever-evolving
The proof is in the pudding, as they say. According to SEMA, aftermarket lighting secured a $2.09 billion market in 2017. Of that $2.09 billion, nearly 60 percent were headlight and taillight sales, approximately 30 percent fell into the exterior accessory lighting category, and the last 10 percent included interior lighting.
enthusiast base that’s constantly impacting a wave of trends, but the number of options within off-road LED lighting alone can be intimidating.
Looking more closely at the data points, it’s interesting to note that exterior accessory lighting is beginning to show slightly more growth than traditional headlight/taillight replacement sales, across all primary business types.
Don’t fret. Whether you’re looking to enhance visibility and trail safety, personalize the appeal of that prized 4x4, or integrate LEDs as a functional solution with other products—there’s a brand, a product, and a price point that’s right for you.
“As you might expect, in niche markets like off-road, that percentage of exterior accessory lighting increases dramatically. In fact,
But First, Choosing the Right LED Off-Road Light Consumers should consider their level of adventure when choosing what will work best for them, as that will ultimately dictate decision factors like necessary beam pattern, lumens, wattage, distance, etc. It goes without saying that some lights are simply better suited for certain off-road activities than others. In addition, off-roaders should take into account environmental conditions like rain, fog, snow, or wind that can kick up elements like dirt, dust, and small debris. The folks at KC HiLiTES break it down here for us; “For example, will you be flinging sand at the Pismo/Oceano dunes or ripping through whoops in the Arizona desert? Are you going to be rock crawling in Moab or traversing trails in the Colorado mountains or forests

beam coverage. Vital to the performance of these lights is where they are aimed. Flood Beams: Flood beams are nearly the opposite of a spot beam and they create a wide, evenly distributed pattern of light that floods an area with an extremely tall vertical and wide horizontal light pattern. Due to the light being evenly distributed across a large area, they often are not very intense, which proves beneficial in reducing glare when reflected off nearby objects around the vehicle. Flood beam lights are typically used as work lights, scene lights, and backup lights to see a broader area at shorter distances. Construction and agricultural-type vehicles often use them.
of Georgia? As you can imagine, the lights needed for high-speed wheeling in the desert could be much different from what’s needed for more moderately paced off-roading on forest service trails and overlanding adventures.” The following detailed breakdown of LED beam patterns below comes courtesy of KC HiLiTES: Fog Beams: A true fog beam projects a beam pattern that is very wide horizontally (often 135 degrees or wider) but has a sharp vertical cut-off. Fog lights are intended to be mounted below the headlights (e.g. 10-24 inches above the ground) and are designed to shine below layers of fog, rain, snow, and even dust. This pattern lights up a pathway close to the ground but does not light the airborne particles in the line of sight while driving. These also only illuminate a short-range distance from the vehicle and will not throw light very far. If you’re often driving in foggy, rainy, snowy, or dusty conditions, then fog beam light will greatly benefit your visibility. Wide-40 Beams: Lights that feature a Wide-40 beam are a hybrid between a fog beam and a driving beam light. They have a wide pattern, but also have increased brightness and light distance compared to a fog light pattern. Although, they do not have quite as much distance as a driving beam light. These are typically not street legal, so they are a good option if you want something for off-road use only that has a very bright, wide beam. Driving Beams/Spread: Lights with a driving beam pattern are designed to supplement your high-beam headlights and illuminate a path much further down the road. Driving lights produce a rectangular shaped beam pattern that can reach further and wider than your headlights. Sometimes, depending on the manufacturer, a light with a driving beam pattern is not street legal and, therefore, cannot be used on roadways where there is oncoming traffic. However, KC’s LED driving lights all comply with both SAE and ECE regulations, while meeting street-legal standards mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT). Driving lights are very useful to create visibility near the sides of roadways and areas directly in front of the vehicle. They are great for all-around trail riding as well. Spread beam lights are similar to driving beams but tend to be brighter, wider, and sometimes taller since they are not required to follow specific SAE or ECE safety standards. Spread beam lights are great lights for multi-purpose off-road use and offer versatile, balanced lighting. Spot Beams (Long Range): Spot or long-range lights are able to penetrate deep into the night. Lights that have a spot beam pattern produce a tighter, more focused circular beam of light (often called a pencil beam) that reaches far down the road to see way out ahead toward the horizon even at higher speeds. Because this light pattern is very narrow, there is not much light on the sides. Spot beam lights are best when paired with other beam patterns to fill the areas closer to the vehicle, for a complete area of light 16 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
Brands, Product Selection, and Price With more brands on the market than one can count, rest assured there’s an option and product available for your vehicle application and within budget. In a YouTube video from January of this year, Matt Mohl of CJ Off-Road completes a thorough analysis of some popular LED off-road lights, from Rough Country, Rugged Ridge, and KC HiLiTES to Rigid Industries and Baja Designs. In addition to reviewing beam patterns, distances, features, benefits, and pricing, CJ Off-Road presented nighttime video surveillance of the onsite product testing so viewers could see the results for themselves—results that are helpful to any off-roader who is feeling the burn when it comes to making the right decision. Other must-research brands include: Anzo USA, BrightSource, JW Speaker, Quake LED, TrailFX, Vision-X, and Westin Automotive. Be prepared to dip into those savings hidden under the mattress with names like Vision-X, JW Speaker, Rigid Industries, and Baja Designs, but the high-end tech and quality construction indisputably warrant the price tag. For dependable quality at a reasonable price point, trusted brands like Rugged Ridge, Westin, and TrailFX have carved out a name for themselves in recent years. Featuring a sleek, blacked-out appearance, as well as a heavy-duty moisture and dust-resistant die cast aluminum housing, Westin’s new HyperQ B-FORCE LED auxiliary lights produce an impressive output and have an industry-leading warranty to match. The More the Merrier… at Least for the Consumer From multi-colour off-road lighting accessories - certainly a hot trend right now - to laser lighting, the market is crowded with options. While that may not be ideal for manufacturers, it is for you. After all, competition breeds innovation - and the segment continues to evolve as new technology leads the entire industry down a futuristic styling path, influenced by automakers’ frenzied efforts to get electric and autonomous vehicles into the mainstream. It will be interesting to see how the off-road market decides to shine its own light on this next generation of vehicle design.

Financing Your 4x4 Dreams
Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

or many decades, car and truck advertising has been an inescapable part of daily life. Most of us pass by billboards, skip over online ads, and ignore flyers in our newspapers - until we’re in the market for a new vehicle, that is. When the time comes and you decide to buy a brand-new truck or 4x4, you may find yourself overwhelmed with offers and choices. But how do you navigate the increasingly complicated process of financing a brand new vehicle? It’s the second biggest purchase most of us will ever make, yet strangely enough, it can be a quick decision, and the buying process can take just an hour - potentially leaving you with a rushed decision on a loan that isn’t very easy to get out of down the road. Thankfully, we have done some legwork for you, and after analyzing the types of financing out there, discussing customer experiences with recent buyers, and seeking advice from new car dealers, we came up with this brief look into the world of vehicle financing - especially as it applies to financing an off-road truck or 4x4. Of course, we are not financial advisers. If you have any questions or are unsure about the information provided here, you should consult your bank or another financial professional for more advice. If you’re an enthusiast, then you likely already know the exact 4x4 you want, right down to trim level and options. If you don’t, you should decide right at the beginning what your new vehicle will look like. Choosing options before you even begin to think about how you’ll pay for it will give you a better picture of your long-term cost, and gives you a total price to use when comparing various payment options such as financing, leasing and third-party loans. According to advice from the New Car Dealers Association of B.C., “manufacturers sometimes offer incentives specific to leasing - this 26 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
can make a huge difference in lifecycle ownership costs if you want a new vehicle every few years.” Most of us only keep a vehicle for about 36 months before we decide to move on to something else. That also happens to be a sweet spot for trade-in value, as factory warranties are usually valid for four years. Good advice from these experts is invaluable: “decide how long you want to keep the vehicle and then do a cost comparison -- financing versus leasing, before you make your decision.” During your search for a new 4x4, you might find that manufacturers are changing the way they display prices on web-based Screenshot courtesy toyota.ca

number by 52 and consider the interest and loan term and suddenly a $50,000 4x4 is going to cost a lot more, for a lot longer. A good rule of thumb is to option out your build, then calculate a 5-year repayment with standard financing (and don’t forget to include taxes & delivery.) Long repayment periods are a risk; it’s very easy for vehicle depreciation to outpace an outstanding loan balance, so check used vehicle values in your area for the 4x4 you’re interested in, then consider what it might be worth in a few years when deciding on your loan term.
build-and-price tools. Jeep, for example, is aware that most buyers are concerned only about a weekly payment, so every add-on is shown as a weekly cost, rather than the complete cash price. They also use a 96-month (eight year) term as the default when showing weekly prices. These seemingly small increases can add up, so make sure you’re seeing the whole picture when you build a vehicle. Alternatively, you can leave room in your budget for when you arrive at the dealer. “Some manufacturers offer factory-approved accessories, which, when installed by the dealer, not only can be financed, but will also be covered under the new vehicle warranty” says the NCDABC. That weekly payment we mentioned is an attempt by manufacturers to make their vehicles seem less expensive. Multiply that

Once you’ve settled on a budgeted price, you can start to shop around. Before you visit the dealer, talk to a few to see what institutions they use for new vehicle financing. Sometimes your own bank will offer auto loans at a dealership - and they might be able to give you a better rate based on your history with them. A manufacturer’s own financing will offer a general interest rate that everyone pays regardless of their credit history (a rate which usually decreases with shorter loan terms.) However, you will only get promotional interest rates directly from the manufacturer, often due to stock clearout at the end of a model year. These low-rate promotions may not get you the vehicle you exactly want, but could save you thousands of dollars over the course of a loan instead. When you’ve finally decided on a vehicle at the price you want, your shopping may not actually be over. At the dealer, you can add all kinds of products to your loan. According to NCDABC, rebateable warranties and coverages are the way to go. “Some extended warranty plans (if unused) can be refunded on a prorated basis or even transferred to the next owner.” Extended warranties are very popular, but make sure to read the fine print - they could
be null and void if any off-road modifications are made, and some are even void in very basic circumstances. (One 4x4 owner we spoke to said that the extended warranty he was offered would be considered void if he drove the vehicle on a dirt road!) Think again about how long you may keep the vehicle for, as a manufacturer warranty is often comprehensive and may last longer than you intend to drive your new rig. Other popular add-ons include life and disability coverage, replacement cost insurance, and even debt refinancing. That last one is sometimes a bad idea - although vehicle loans carry interest rates much lower than credit cards or bank loans, the idea of tying debt in to a depreciating asset is risky. If you need to sell, you could end up having to make a massive payout on the loan because the value of the vehicle is far less than the loan balance. NCDABC agrees: “Remember though, (debt consolidation) has nothing to do with the value of your truck so don’t be surprised if you then owe more on it than it’s worth!” While there are now many third party companies offering seemingly affordable vehicle finance, it’s best to stick to dealers, banks, or a company you already have a relationship with. These outfits often claim that they “finance anyone” and are even willing to find a vehicle for you based only on an affordable monthly payment. This tactic is designed to draw in buyers desperate to own a vehicle for a very low payment, regardless of loan terms that can approach 10 years. Chasing after low weekly or monthly payments usually means you aren’t getting a very good
deal at the end of the day. As mentioned before, consider the whole price of the vehicle and not just the payment - if you can’t pay for the vehicle in question within a reasonable loan repayment term, you should reconsider what you might be able to afford. That first drive in a new 4x4 is unforgettable - there’s nothing like driving home a clean 4x4 before you muddy it up on the trails. Hopefully you will end up with exactly what you want at a price you can afford. If not, there’s always going to be a chance to add accessories and modify it to your taste - just make sure you stop and pick up a copy of Off-Road Plus on your way home from the dealer!

FEATURE: 1946 WILLYS CJ-2A
First Civilian Jeep Story and phtotos by John Gunnell
W
orld War II sired the development of the Jeep and the 1945 CJ-2A was the first civilian Jeep. It differed in many ways from the military type. Some of the changes included a different power take-off, a revised transmission, a different transfer case and axle ratios, a different spare tire mount and a shorter overall length of 130 in. The original CJ-2A transmission was a Model T090A made by Warner Gear that was larger than the gearbox in the Willys MB military model. It had a special rear main shaft and side-mounted shifting levers that allowed for a column-mounted gear shifter.
Additional CJ-2A specifications included a six-volt electrical system and an 11-qt. cooling system. A radiator shroud was also installed in order to improve low-speed cooling. A number of running production changes were made in the 1945 models, such as a switch from fillable to sealed shock absorbers. The four-cylinder “Go Devil” engine’s four-bearing camshaft was also upgraded from silent-chain drive to a gear-driven design. Several other significant changes were also made in the CJ-2A’s first year. The CJ-2A was offered from the Willys-Overland factory in gray, tan, blue and brown colours. Standard equipment included driverand-passenger side vacuum windshield wipers, two padded seats, a driver’s side outside rearview mirror, a combination stop/taillight, high-low sealed beam headlights, parking lights, spare tire, oil bath air cleaner, oil filter, tool kit, a jack, and safety glass in the windshield. The CJ-2A initially sold for $1,241 and weighed 2,120 lbs. It had a 3,500-lb. GVW. In that first year of production, 1,823 were made. Of course, all car production immediately after the war was hampered by material shortages and labour unrest. In 1946, things settled down a bit in the auto industry. Production lines started to pick up steam at all American automakers and Willys-Overland cranked out 71,554 units in Toledo, Ohio. The standard Jeep engine was the four-cylinder “Go Devil.” It was an in-line four-cylinder with the valves in the side of the block. It had a 3.125 x 4.375-in. bore and stroke, and displaced 134.2 cu. in. The four put out 60-hp at 4,000 rpm, which was good for a pretty snappy ride in the lightweight Jeep. Torque was rated at 105 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm.

event. While traveling from Colorado to the Baja, the man—the only name mentioned at SEMA was “George”-- broke the ring-and-pinion on his vehicle. He was ready to dead-head it home, but Filar told him come to his shop to pick up a spare 9-inch rear end that he had in one of his race trucks. They made the swap and his friend wound up having a good preliminary run at Baja. George wanted to repay Filar for the help. He was told he could just “settle up” someday in the future. But George didn’t feel right with a “debt” hanging over his head, so he offered Eric his old 1946 Jeep, which was “just what the doctor ordered.”
Eric Filar’s 1946 Willys CJ-2A was displayed at the SEMA Show a couple of years back. This is the story of his “flat fendered” Jeep, how he got it and why it drew a lot of interest at SEMA. Filar and his twin brother are multiple winners of the Baja 1000 race in their home state of California. They also compete in rock crawling and desert racing events. Eric said his interest in off-roading started when he got his driver’s license. Like Brer Rabbit in the briar patch, Filar is right at home in the offroading community. He was born and bred a Jeep lover and had long been interested in owning an example of the company’s first civilian model. However, he would have never guessed how he was going to achieve that goal. Finding a CJ-2A was easy and due to collector interest, prices were starting to get astronomical. But it wasn’t money that got him his 1946 Jeep CJ-2A – it was his deep passion for off-road vehicles and racing them. Filar had a friend from Colorado who was interested in the Baja 1000 race and wanted to hook up with Eric to do a preliminary run for the
Wanting to keep the Jeep as stock as possible, Eric overhauled some of the components. He rebuilt the Carter W-05969 one-barrel carb, adjusted the old drum brakes and installed a Lock-Right in the rear end. Eric added new tires and wheels all around. Up front they are attached to a Dana 25 front axle. At the rear is a 10-spline Dana 44 from a 1950 CJ-2A. Otherwise, he left the old Jeep pretty much factory stock. To say that the 73-year-old Utility is far from a pristine show car is an understatement. It is mostly dark blue, but the blue was applied over yellow paint, which is now showing through in the wheel wells and around certain body joints. There is rust on the frame, the fenders, the floor, the seat frames, the back upper edge of the body tub, the steering wheel spokes, the fold-down windshield frame, the hood, the small running boards and the black-painted front bumper. There is even rust showing through from inside the grille shell. This old Jeep is definitely not a “pampered pooch.” The interior retains the original twin bucket seats, which are essentially “metal lawn chairs” with gray cushions. The seat bottom cushions are dark gray and are definitely old—if not original equipment. The seat back cushions are light gray and look homemade. Black straps hold them to the metal seat back. Although the CJ-2A is kind of a “rat rod” Jeep today, Eric is happy to have been able to add it to his stable of off-road vehicles.

Jeep Trucks
A quick history of Jeep four-wheel drive trucks Story and photos by John Gunnell, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturers
T
he Jeep is heading for its 80th birthday in 2020. Although the World War II military Jeep was officially described as “Truck, ¼-ton, 4x4,” it was more of a scout car than a truck. Willys had offered a pickup with passenger car front sheet metal from 1937-1942. Once the Jeep entered production at the Willys-Overland Motors, Inc., factory in Toledo, Ohio, the company got to work planning postwar civilian models, including the Jeep station wagon, the Jeepster phaeton and pickup and sedan delivery trucks. Most of these models came in 4x2 and 4x4 editions, and here we’ll focus on the 4x4s. During the war, Industrial Designer Brooks Stevens penned a magazine article that predicted that a line of Jeep-based civilian vehicles would evolve after the fighting stopped. Barney Roos, the head of Willys engineering, read the article and hired Stevens to design a new line of Willys cars and trucks for the postwar market place.
wagon with wood-grained metal panels was his initial creation. He then filled the rear side window openings of the wagon with sheet metal panels to turn it into a sedan delivery truck that’s often described as a “panel truck” or “utility wagon.” Next, Stevens chopped off the upper back of the wagon and added a windowed rear panel to make a pickup truck cab. He then added angular rear fenders and added a dispatch box with a tailgate and a side-mounted spare tire. In his 1996 book The Story of Jeep (Krause Publications), Jeep expert Patrick R. Foster described these trucks as being “rugged and handsome.” They came with various engines and two- or four-wheel drive. In May 1947, Willys released the truck in chassis ($1,175); chassis & cab ($1,524); pickup ($1,620) and stake bodied ($1,685) models. These
While swoopy bodies could have been designed, Roos knew Willys faced production problems because body makers like Murray, Briggs and Budd were too busy working for Ford, GM and Chrysler to help Willys. His answer was to deal with a company that did sheet metal stampings for home appliances. This worked fine, but put limitations on styling concepts that Brooks Stevens’ addressed well with his effective design work. The civilian models that Stevens crafted had to be boxy with panels that had a shallow depth of draw suitable for the stamping machines that usually made appliances. To compensate, Stevens came up with front end designs that were similar in appearance to the now legendary fighting Jeep, and some unique models. version was $2,026 and the six was $2,036—only $10 more. By 1956, the sedan delivery name was dropped and “utility wagon” was used for all models, which had glass side windows. From 1957-1965, Jeep offered a truly innovative line of forwardcontrol trucks that kind of predicted the van-based Ford and Dodge pickups that came out in the early 1960s. The smaller FC-150 model was introduced on Nov. 27, 1956 and the larger FC-170 arrived on May 20, 1957. The Forward-Control Jeeps were offered in chassis & cab, pickup and stake-bodied models. Prices in 1957 were in the $2,044 to $2,678 range. Both the fourcylinder F-head engine and the L-head six-cylinder engines were available. This 1-ton Willys pickup has been updated with a Mopar 440-cid V8. prices are for the four-wheel-drive versions. At this time, the engine was a 134.2-cid 60-hp inline four. Advertisements described the pickup as a “farm-sized” truck. All 1947 trucks had a 118-in. wheelbase and 183.75-in. overall length. The four-wheel-drive versions were rated at 1-ton. These trucks remained basically the same vehicles through 1965, although there were constant mechanical improvements, various engine choices and changes in the prices. The 132.4-cid L-head four was used through 1950. A like-sized F-head four was offered from 1950 to 1953. In the latter year, the failure of the Aero Willys passenger car to crack the market prompted the sale of
In 1963, Jeep introduced a new Wagoneer station wagon and along with it came the Wagoneer-based Gladiator pickup trucks. These came in a Thriftside version with exposed rear fenders and a Townside version with slab-sided rear quarter panels. Initial body styles included the two pickups, a platform-stake model and a chassis & cab for custom bodies. These trucks utilized the 230-cid 140-hp overhead cam six. J-200 Gladiators had a 120-in. wheelbase and the larger J-300 models were on a 126-in. wheelbase. Overall lengths were 183.75 and 196.75 in., respectively. Both models were rated for 1-ton. Initial pricing ranged from just under $2,600 to just over $4,000. The Gladiator models were offered from 1963 until 1987. In 1964, overhead-valve (133 hp) and overhead-cam (140 hp) versions of the six were offered. The next year a 327-cid “Vigilante” V8 with 250 hp was added and the overhead-cam six was an option. In 1969, a 350-cid 230-hp V8 replaced the 327. In 1970, American Motors Corp. (AMC) purchased Jeep from Kaiser and Gladiators got a new, more Jeep-like grille with vertical slats. Starting in 1971, the first AMC-built Jeeps hit the market and 304-cid 210-hp and 360-cid 245-hp engines were used, with several 360 versions available. Net horsepower ratings were adopted throughout the auto industry in 1973 and thereafter a variety of AMC V8s were put in Jeep trucks including the 360 and even the 401. Also, in 1973, the Jeep truck was the only pickup available in the United States with full-time four-wheel

The resulting company was called Willys Motors through 1964 and Kaiser Jeep from 1964 to 1970. In 1954, the F-head motor was standard and a 226.2-cid 115-hp L-head “Super Hurricane Six” was available for four-wheel-drive models. In 1955, this in-line six-cylinder engine became standard in the four-wheeldrive trucks and the four was optional. In 1963, a 230-cid 140-hp single overhead-cam six-cylinder engine became available. The sedan delivery was offered in two-wheel-drive format starting in 1947 and, in 1953, it became available with four-wheel drive with solid rear side panels and dual rear doors for $1,920. In 1964, the 226.2cid six became standard in the sedan delivery, which crested $2,000 in price for the first time. In 1955, the four-cylinder four-wheel-drive 38 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019

drive. Then, in 1974, the truck offerings were greatly reduced to ½-ton J-10 Townside pickups on 119- and 131-in. wheelbases and the 1-ton J-20 Townside on the longer wheelbase only. The base engine was now AMC’s 258-cid “Big Six” with 110 hp. Two 360 V8s (175 and 195 hp) were available, along with the 401/215 hp V8. By the late ‘70s, the Jeep trucks were changing very little from year to year, but many optional striping and trim package were made available. These included the sporty Honcho and upscale Golden Eagle options. The 258-cid six disappeared in 1975. In 1976, the price of the J-20 Townside pickup cracked $5,000 for a Jeep first. This was also the last year that the 401-cid V8 was offered. The Honcho and Golden Eagle continued into 1978. By this time, both J-10s were priced over $5,000 and the J-20 went over $6,000. In 1979, French automaker Renault started an investment in AMC that merged the two in the marketplace. By 1986, Renault would be in charge of all AMC-Jeep production. Power brakes and front disc brakes also became standard in 1979. A new Cherokee-type front end and a sporty 10-4 package were introduced. Interiors were upgraded. By 1980, fuel economy was in the spotlight and the mechanical changes made to Jeeps were the most extensive since 1963. For the first time since 1973, a new Thriftside style model was introduced. The top-ofthe-heap Laredo trim package was also introduced. The 258-cid 110hp six was seen again and other engine options included the 360-cid 129-hp V8. In Jeep trucks sold in California, the 360-cid two-barrel V8 was standard. Throughout the ‘80s, numerous changes and improvements were made in Jeep trucks each year. A new vertically-slotted grille was adopted in 1981 and the engine was lightened in weight by 90 lbs. A five-speed overdrive transmission was introduced in 1982, when a Pioneer package for all Townside pickups was added. In 1983, the J-10 was available with the Select-Trac two-/four-wheel drive system. There were no changes in 1984. In 1985, the 118.7-in. wheelbase J-10 was dropped. All models used the 131-in. wheelbase and 8-ft. bed. Base and Pioneer package were available. In 1986 and 1987, production was down to just over 1,500 Jeep trucks each year and 1987 was the finale.

Looks like this FC model was sold as a chassis & cab and fitted with an aftermarket or homemade platform body. Renault sold AMC to Chrysler for $1.1 billion on March 2, 1987. Chrysler saw no future for the J-10 and J-20 trucks. A new Jeep Comanche that lasted thru 1992 was a compact pickup derived from the Cherokee wagon. It came in base, X and XLS trims and with two- or four-wheel drive. Base engine was a 150.45-cid 117-hp fuel-injected four. Options included a Renault Turbo Diesel four (Renault had bought AMC and Jeep) and a 173-cid 105-hp V6. The Comanche had a 119.9-in. wheelbase and 195.5-in. overall length with a 7-ft. bed. The initial price was $7,049 and 33,586 were built the first year. In 1987, a new Comanche pickup with a 113-in. wheelbase and 6-ft. bed was introduced at $6,495. Base and Pioneer models were available on both wheelbases, while a sporty Chief was offered only on the short wheelbase. Engine choices were reduced to the 150.45-cid four and a 241.6-cid 173-hp V6. A new 8-slot grille updated the trucks’ looks in 1988. The Laredo package was also upgraded. For 1989, the smaller Comanche got a bigger fuel tank. The Laredo and Chief models were not marketed in 1989. A new Comanche Eliminator joined the four-wheel-drive line for 1990. Prices for both four-wheel-drive models were now above $9,000. Production dropped to 9,572 for the calendar year. A more powerful four-cylinder engine arrived in 1991. The previous Throttle Body Injection system was replaced with a Sequential Fuel Injection system and output rose to 130 hp. The 241.6-cid 190-hp V6 was optional again. The last year for the Comanche pickup and last year for Jeep trucks was 1992, when limited changes were made. Only 3,142 units were made in the model year. In June of 1992, Chrysler announced plans to drop the Comanche at the close of the model year. Only 164,458 of the smaller Jeep trucks had been sold during their 7-year run. Although the Comanche got off to a good start, mass demand for it fizzled off quickly. Some enthusiasts also consider the 1966-1973 Jeepster Commando/Commando, 1981-1986 GJ8 Scrambler and 2019 Jeep Scrambler to be truck models as well. Information about these Jeeps can be found at www. cjponyparts.com. For this article, we tried to stick to the four-wheel-drive models that were marketed primarily as commercial vehicles.
