ULTIMATE GARAGE, calgary, ab. floor that is UV and chemical resistant, water proof, and provides a clean durable surface that not only looks great, but protects the concrete below from erosion. Along with the great look, an acrylic floor makes cleaning up messes a breeze, making your life easier when the job is done. Everything Has a Home For the majority of tools and parts, the best storage solution is cabinetry. Ultimate Garage has three different offerings with Tuff E Nuff, a high quality 18-gauge modular cabinets that come in standard sizes, the highly customizable Redline Garagegear that comes competitively priced and top of the line Baldhead, high-end professional grade cabinets for the serious gearhead or professional garage. When you’ve organized where everything is going to go, clearly label cabinets, drawers and bags so that everything has its dedicated place and everyone knows where to look, then... Spring is in the air. The snows of a long Canadian winter are receding, the days are getting warmer and the songs of birds in the air are a gentle reminder that it’s time for that annual activity – spring-cleaning. For those of us who spend as much time in our garages as we do cutting the lawn and pruning the shrubs, the good folks over at Ultimate Garage of Calgary, Alberta, have given us some great ideas to get the jump on the motoring season and prepping our garages for summer and beyond. Think Vertical Depending how much stuff you store in the garage, chances are it clutters up in boxes and shelves up against the wall. Well, turn the wall itself into an organized storage tool. With products like Proslat walls, tools, bins and even shelving and cabinets can be attached to the wall via slats that hold specialized mounts capable of supporting up to 75 lbs per linear foot. One of the most versatile organization solutions available, slat walls are made of PVC, are UV resistant and make use of every square-inch of wall to get everything up off the floor and out of the way in an easy to use configuration. Think Up An efficient garage makes use of all space. If height allows, a four-post lift can turn a single bay garage into a two vehicle storage area, with one car lifted, another can be stored underneath. If it’s a bike, sled or ATV that needs tucking away, Loft-it is a lift platform that mounts to the wall and can suspend up to 1,200 lbs, easily lifting large items high and out of the way.

Dump The Junk Finally, the organization of your garage is dependant on the sheer amount of stuff that you have laying around. Be brutally honest with yourself when you are spring-cleaning. Do you really need something? Are you going to use it in the next year? Have you used it in the last two? If it is broken, obsolete or ended up in the garage because you don’t use it, chances are its just clutter taking up space. Donate or scrap it to keep just the essentials in a well-organized garage. By increasing the organization of your garage, you not only make jobs easier, it’s also easier to keep clean. And as Ultimate Garage likes to remind people, a clean, well-organized garage increases the value of your home. While kitchens and bathrooms get most of the renovation attention, investment in the garage will set your home apart from the rest. Along with all these great cleaning and organizing solutions you see here, Ultimate Garage has many more great products to tailor your garage to your specific needs and will install everything to the highest standard. As an A+ rated company with the Better Business Bureau, Ultimate Garage is confident in their ability to produce the highest quality equipment and experience for your dollar. So much so they have been featured on a half hour episode of “Remodel It with Her” last year and are a certified partner of the Remodel It TV show. To find more helpful hints and learn about the high quality solutions Ultimate Garage can provide for your work space, check out their website at www.ultimategarageinc.ca. Once you’ve seen what they can do for you, give them a call at 1-877-317-9311 or visit them in person at #1, 6303 Burbank Road SE, Calgary, Alberta.

Ultimate Garage see’s the roof as just another open space to exploit for its storage capability. Onrax overhead storage bolts directly to the joists offering up to 800 lbs storage capacity. Things like bikes, skis, snowshoes, sleds and snowboards can be stored on the ceiling. These are safe here because you only use them seasonally; they can be taken down when in use and kept out of the way when they’re not. Think Down The floor is also an overlooked quality of the garage. Ultimate Garage installs an acrylic resin based floor that goes on in a day and is useable in as little as an hour. The end product produces a showroom quality Advertising Feature

Roadster Pickup

Story and photos by Cam Hutchins lthough this would seem to be a story about a 1928 Ford Roadster Pickup A built in the ‘50s in Vancouver, it really is more a story about friendship. Two different sets of friends, decades apart. As the young Dan Wittenberg was in his mid teens, growing up in Vancouver, old cars were all over the place, filling back yards and alley ways to such an extent the city was having to deal with them. He had a buddy, Fred Merkley, building a roadster, and Wittenberg wanted to build something for himself, so the friends found scraps of lumber and used building materials and built a two-car garage behind his mother’s house on 33rd near Fraser. The garage would become a hub of hot rodding activity over the span of the more than five years it took to build the car and, as a testament to their construction skills, is still standing today. In 1954, a 1928 Ford Model A roadster pickup was finally found in Abbotsford, covered in branches. After paying the princely sum of $20, the previous owner asked how they were going to get it out of there. Wittenberg told him they would drive it home and the next day, full of bravado and extra parts from Merkley’s garage, they got the car running and drove home to Vancouver – with no road permits or licence plates.

amazing sitting so low on the ground. This was in 1956, the Hot Rodding community was just starting, and low cars were certainly a novelty...and a source of attention for the Police. Another pal apprenticing as a bodyman worked with Wittenberg at Bowell MacLean on Burrard. Dan worked at Bow Mac while Jim Pattison was the General Manager. Starting as a car jockey and then in the tire shop and also the lube rack, Dan must have mentioned his car a few times, and the parts manager, Al Mills, took an interest in the project. Mills came by to look at it, and was impressed, but told Wittenberg what he really needed was a new overhead-valve Chevy engine. Dan said “yeah right,” and as a young guy, had no way of paying for such an extravagance. A few weeks later, Mills told Dan his new crate motor would arrive in ten days. Asking how he would ever pay for it, he was told it would come out of his pay cheque. The “crate” motor actually came in a wooden crate and was the object of many young guys’ fantasies, and although the garage was always filled with a few

Part of this was possible because, as mentioned, the City of Vancouver was literally filled with old heaps, and if you saw a car with a part you thought you may use one day, you asked the owner if you could have it, and most times the answer would be sure...take the whole car. Merkley’s garage was lined with gaskets, belts, hoses, water pumps, starters, transmissions, brakes, and all sorts of parts. Once in Wittenberg’s garage, the body was stripped off, and knowing that Ford parts were almost interchangeable from the first Model A to the 1948 models... or at least could be persuaded into place...a ‘48 Ford flathead was found, along with a tranny, rearend and “juice” hydraulic brakes. The frame was boxed and gusseted with a 9-inch kicked-up rearend by his pal Ross who was taking a welding course and would go on to be a welder. A drop-axle was sourced from CalVan Auto Parts and the whole chassis looked

friends, now it was packed. The crate motor came with a two-barrel manifold and no exhaust headers or starter, and looked real sexy in its green paint. It took some time to build a project like this, and money was certainly a factor; when it came to actually having to buy parts, it took a bit more time. To mate the brand new Chevy motor to a nine year-old ‘48 Ford transmission was going to be a problem, and asking at Cal Van for help, they ordered a new aluminum bell housing specially built for the conversion. It looked so good, Dan slept with it the first night. Whistling Bernie, the Vancouver Cop tasked with handling these hot-head Hot Rodders, made many visits to the garage. Luckily, he was not there the day the flathead had been stripped out of the now two year-old boxed frame, and the crate motor had been installed and was finally ready to run after Dan having owned it for two years. Water was poured into the engine with rags stuffed in the ports to keep it there. A glass jar had a line soldered into the lid with a fuel line to the carb and then hung upside down as a rudimentary gas tank. The rear end was jacked up and the rear wheels were spinning as the car went through the gears. Soon it was ready for some more excursions, up and down the back alley. Work continued, as did the parties at the Garage, and many mothers would phone Wittenberg’s mom to see it their boys were at the garage. The car was finally finished with a beautiful Copper paint job by Joe Mahovolich. The interior was done by the guys and it had no door panels. It was a very nice car for the day but crude by today’s standards. It saw action at a number of car shows including the PNE back in the day, and was driven around town and to the King’s Burgers on Kingsway. When Wittenberg got married and was expecting a baby, the car was sold to Jimmie Johnson of Johnson Motors for an incredible $908, which was a very good price in 1961. With married life and a new job in construction, Wittenberg moved on and left his Hot Rodding days behind him. Living in Belcarra, he now ran with a very different crowd...or so he thought. Three of his neighbours are the biggest gearheads around, but talk of cars never was the basis of their friendship, so not much bench racing went on while he was around.

filled with cool pics of hot rods and he keenly studied them until Morita asked him if he liked old cars. Wittenberg pulled out the faded, pitted laminated photo of the roadster pickup and showed it to Morita, who said “yeah, I knew that car...Jimmie Johnson built it and then sold it to Danny Maxwell.” After being straightened out, a lunch was set with Maxwell, and Wittenberg found the car which was now in Salmon Arm. Meeting the present owner, Wittenberg saw his dream car had been dismantled and could see parts of his handiwork stuck on other unfinished projects, but knew he was not going to get his hot rod back. In the meantime, Dan mentioned to his longtime “old car guy” neighbour John Carlson that he would like to buy the car back. After a number of failed attempts to buy the original car back, Carlson suggested that he build a tribute car that resembled his old ride but had the reliability of a modern drivetrain. At a lunch meeting shared by Wittenberg, John Carlson, long time hot rodder Dennis Groundwater, and Sandy Morita after much apparent arm twisting, Morita was convinced that he needed to paint the car and that he would oversee the aesthetics of the bodywork and fabricating. Morita was one step ahead of them and had all along been quietly pushing/steering Wittenberg into the recreation of this famous roadster pickup. Over many wonderful evenings with a glass of wine in hand, Wittenberg and Carlson designed the chassis. It was to have a TCI frame accompanied by a So Cal stainless front end, a quick-change differential and a Chevrolet ZZ4 rollerized crate motor running through a 700R4 transmission. Carlson then arranged a meeting between Wittenberg and Canadian Hot Rod Hall of Fame member Jim Flett, owner of Jimmy’s Rod Shop in Maple Ridge. Jimmy Lester and Ross Tortoiseshell worked at the shop and were convinced that they should be the builders of the car, and Lester worked full time on the project at Flett’s shop. The next part of the story is fate, as Carlson learned that Dan Maxwell, one of the owners of the original Wittenberg

Wittenberg never mentioned the old roadster pickup until he went to Sandy Morita’s body shop to have a small accident fixed on his wife’s car. Morita’s office was

roof, were done by Arnie Schwab, and the roof struts were built and lengthened by Jim Lester. The roof height is stock, but the added length is deceptive. When it came time to paint the car, Dan, along with his neighbours Morita and George McRea, started to go to car shows, and Candy Apple Red was decided to be the right choice. To paint it properly, the car was dismantled. The paint, of course, was going to be made illegal in Canada, so Wittenberg traded a set of finned brakes he had bought for the project for extra gallons of paint so the car could be repainted in the future...if needed. In the five years since the roadster pickup has been on the road, all guys ‘in the know’ say it is the best candy apple paint they have ever seen. After being driven 30,000 miles, it is still stunning, with a bare minimum of “road rash”.

car, had another original ‘28 Ford roadster pickup body, box and fenders for sale, complete with an original registration. An agreement was struck and now Dan Wittenberg owned an original body just like the one he had over fifty years ago. On the way home, Wittenberg, accompanied by his wife Barbra, stopped by Carlson’s to show off their prize. This would eventually become a recreation of Vancouver Pioneer Hot Rod history. The TCI frame was built exactly to the specifications of the pieces Dan would be using. The new frame looked so sexy with the factory-installed brake lines and custom chassis parts that after it was painted, it seemed wrong to cover it with a body.

Back in the day, insurance was not required, but a city inspection was. As a youth, Wittenberg remembers taking the first roadster pickup to the city test station, and after the technician drove the car onto the brake test and the car actually stopped quickly, he was so impressed by the copper hot rod, the technician gave him a sticker even though the car had no windshield wipers. Wittenberg has always maintained that this is the first crate motor bought specifically for a hot rod and has a bottle of wine and a couple of glasses to share with whomever can prove him wrong. Knowing Wittenberg, he probably has the same deal for anyone proving him right as well. The car is not part of the ICBC Collector Plate program, and is driven regularly to work and goes to California two or three times a year. With 30,000-plus miles on her, she is still an amazing head-turner - just like back in the day.

Under the watchful eye of Sandy Morita, a ‘32 Ford grille was used, as in the original, along with the ‘30-’31 fenders that Wittenberg preferred. But as time passes, the cabs on these old vehicles shrink, so three inches were added to the doors to allow a more spacious cab and leg room. The box was shortened three inches, reducing the amount of gravel he can carry. Interestingly, the wheels on the original are the same as now, but much narrower. Back in the day, Dan used Dominion Royal master 8.20x15 on the rears and these were the tires from Cadillacs of that era. On the front he used Firestone 6.70x15. Although he built the original over five years, Wittenberg knew he was better suited to building “High Rises” than “Hot Rods” and left most of the knuckle smashing to more expert hands. The overall ‘look’ of the build of the new version was left to Morita to get the recreation ‘right.’ The majority of parts were bought from Jim at “The Old Car Centre.” The white leather interior, including door panels and the

What NOT to do When Shopping for Wheels By Arch Linsao

J

ust like the title reads, here is your guide of what to do and what not to do when shopping for a set of custom wheels for your ride. This will not only help make the process of searching for and purchasing a nice set of wheels for your vehicle much more enjoyable, but it will also make life easier for your wheel expert. And making your wheel expert’s job easier will also prevent them from giving your name, phone number, email and photo to every other wheel expert in town warning them of the pain you will eventually be causing them. Trust me on this one. It happens. The reason i’m taking this approach to providing you with some wheel buying advice is because i want to make it as enjoyable as possible for both you AND your wheel expert to find you a set of wheels for your ride. It’s essential that both of you are enjoying the process, not just one of you. Obviously it’s important for you so that it is an easy process and you end up with a good experience and some great wheels; but it’s also important that the person advising you and doing the work for you enjoys it as well. From personal experience, I tend to work a lot harder for my customer when I enjoy the process of dealing with them. It makes sense right? And if i’m enjoying the process, that means i’m more passionate about finding them something they like that works with what they need, and what their vehicle needs. That passion and excitement gets passed on to the customer, and it makes a great experience for both of us. It just makes sense. Now on the flip side, when your wheel expert feels like you’re fighting them through the whole process, that passion and excitement will be replaced by frustration and stress. And quite honestly that won’t get either of you anywhere. I could go on and on (as I tend to do) and list a hundred things to do and a hundred things not to do when shopping for wheels, but i’ll keep it simple and stick to the big ones:

36 Performance Plus APR / May 2013

Full Disclosure: Simply put, give your wheel expert as much information as you can possibly give them about your vehicle and what you’re looking for. As a wheel advisor, I don’t expect my customer to know everything about their car or even to know exactly what they want. It’s my job to figure a lot of that out. But you’ve got to give us a starting point and a foundation to build one. Start with your vehicle, and don’t leave it at “I drive a Honda.” We need it all: year, make and model and trim level. What would be even better? Take a look and tell us what size wheels you have on there right now. Many vehicles come with optional wheel and tire sizes. By knowing what you’ve got on there, it lets us know what we’re starting with so that we know where we need to go and what we have to work with. In some cases, some vehicles are equipped with certain options that affect wheel fitment (i.e. - big brakes). It’s essential for us to have this information to start with to make sure we get you a wheel that fits properly and works on your car. And if your advisor asks for more information that may require you to go to your vehicle and check, please humour them. They’re not just doing it to try and make your life difficult or to get rid of you, they’re doing it because they actually need to know. As much as you would dislike it if you ended up with a wheel that didn’t fit, your advisor dislikes it much more as they now have to try and fix the problem that could have been avoided at the beginning of the process. Provide Preferences: Now I don’t expect everyone to know exactly what you want, and it’s perfectly fine to not know what kind of wheel you want to put on your car or what size of wheel you want. I totally get it. But as much as you can, try to give your wheel expert some sort of starting point. Whether it be a specific size, a specific colour, or a specific style. Give us some idea of what you’re looking for so that we can try to narrow down the choices for you. With some vehicles, styles and sizes are limited due to either the vehicle being an uncommon fitment or just a lack of options for that particular vehicle. But with some vehicles, the possibilities are endless. So having some idea of what you like and what you don’t like would get us miles ahead much quicker. Picking out wheels is almost like picking out a pair of shoes or a pair of glasses. Everyone has their own preference based on what they want their vehicle to look like. What your wheel advisor likes and what you like may not always be in sync (often the opposite is true in most cases), so try as best you can to give them some ideas to start with. And as mentioned, it’s perfectly fine to not have an idea of where to start - in that case it’s best to be open to your advisor picking a few options out for you and letting you narrow it down, or even to browse some websites and magazines to see what’s out there to try to get an idea of what you might like or dislike. Either way, be open and honest with them about your preferences. Be Open-Minded: This ties in to the section about preferences, especially if you are coming into it not knowing exactly what you want. It’s important in this case as in any case to be open to suggestions from your wheel expert. Heck, that is why you’re seeking the advice from a wheel expert and not doing it all yourself, right? So when they give you options try to be open to them and also be honest about what you like and don’t like. That being said, use some tact. They’re not mind readers and they’re just trying to narrow down the choices from a thousand wheels to one wheel for you. This process can’t happen without both of you contributing. So rather than shooting down all of their suggestions, try to be constructive about your criticism and actually provide some details about what you do or don’t like about what they’ve offered you. Being open-minded also means that you have to be accepting of what is and isn’t available or able to fit your vehicle. Sometimes a certain style of wheel is usually made for a certain type of vehicle, and not for others. It’s reality and in some cases there’s nothing you or your wheel expert can do about it, so you’ve got to be open to some different choices or even open to having to go through some extra steps to get exactly what you want. Either way, if you keep an open mind, the frustration will be kept to a minimum... for both of you. Leave the chip at home and not on your shoulder: I am fully aware that some, if not many, of you out there have already done your homework about your car, and what wheels you want. I’m fully aware of that because i’m the exact same way when it comes to my own car. I’m probably pickier than any of you out there, trust me. But when you’re going to a wheel expert to seek advice, you’ve got to realize some things. First, they’re just like you.

FEATURE They’re all car guys (or girls), and they’re in the business they are in because they have a passion for what they do. So they get it, and they know why you’re coming to them. Second, they do what they do for a living. Not as a hobby, not only for fun. But that’s their job and their career. They’re trained to do what they do. So you’ve got to let them do it. Listen to their advice. They know what they’re talking about. Now before you get all uppity, I’m not discounting the fact that you know what you’re talking about, too. I’m just saying that you’ve got to let them do their job and understand that they know what they’re talking about as well as you do. So as much as you can, try not to battle with them to get what you want. They’re trying to do what’s best for you and for your vehicle. If they recommend something that’s different than what you’ve calculated out and measured up, you’ve got to stay open to the fact that there may be some reason for it.
