With the time and cash to enjoy himself, Mark Short could have bought anything on wheels to fuel his passion, but building this 1970 Camaro to be the baddest and had the experience and knowledge to do it correctly. Looking online at the various top builders, including Detroit Speed Inc., he knew the best parts would add a certain cachet to the build, but this car was not going to be a show car, it was

going to be driven â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hard! Lots of the technology stuffed into this ride was never going to be seen - but the end result was going to be astounding. 1970 Camaros have a look that does not need too much improvement, so the basic look of the car was going to appear fairly stock. drive system and all the plumbing is XRP hoses. Other great parts by Ring Brothers, Fesler, and Resto Mod Air AC system also share the engine bay. Throughout the car, Anvil Auto Carbon Fibre pieces are used including the inner fender wells, hood, trunk lid and rear spoiler. The interior of the car was modified for function and the dash had to be heavily modified to fit the new Speed Hut Gauges and the run-flat tire pressure system. A stock headliner was used, as were the pressed carpets, but the Recaro front seats were ordered fitted for the owner and his wife, and the back seat was narrowed due to the Mini Tubs, and upholstered to match the Recaros. A good sound system pumping through a bunch of speakers with a GPS security system round out the electronics, but the engine will provide the best music. Continued from Page 22

The very best suspension set up for this chassis was a Roadster Shops “Fast Track” front subframe and Heidts “Pro-G” independent rear suspension. Both of these setups were based on late-model Corvette geometry but with many improvements, and frame connectors to add more stability. Fully adjustable AFCO coilover shocks with remote reservoir were used on all four corners. The Ride Tech “Tiger Cage” rollcage adds much needed structural support for the unit body design. The stainless steel rollcage system is pre-engineered to add chassis stiffness and safety, with the long horizontal side bars stabilizing the front and rear subframes to some degree, while adding that total Bad Boy racer look to the car.

The stopping is provided by Wilwood six-piston calipers gripping 14-inch discs all around. The wheels took the longest to source as so many great wheels are available from the number one source for Resto Mods, Forge Line Wheels. He found a style he liked, and then ordered them in 18x9 for the front, and a special order massive 19x20 for the rear, and wrapped them in Michelin PS2 tires. The outside of the car is tasteful with Sick HID lights and sprayed a House of Kolor silver with a wide stripe created out of just clear coated areas of the Carbon Fibre on the hood and trunk lid and spoiler. Lots of clear coat and polishing have left a show stopping paint job that is only going to be seen at a couple of car shows in Edmonton.

The power comes from a dry sump Mast Motorsports “Black Label” SS-LS7 engine pumping out 700 horses, backed up by THE Autocrossing the car is inevitable, as well as any track time transmission of choice for the Resto-Mod set, the Tremec six- available, and then it is “Two Lane Blacktop” time with a run speed. Dave and Rosemary Pollon’s 1932 Ford 5-Window Coupe

ttending car shows has always been a cool pastime for carnuts, but in 1980, Cloverdale’s Dave Pollon was at the Motorama at the PNE Grounds in Vancouver, and saw as perfect a 1932 five-window coupe as he could ever remember. Dave was into cars and had a 1950 Ford Pickup hot rod, and was rolling around in a couple of 1978 Vettes - a Silver Anniversary and an Indy Pace Car. Paul Khmeleff had just finished the five-window coupe, and to many, including Pollon, the ‘32 five-window coupe is the Holy Grail of Hot Rods. The car was perfect. Every hot rod trick in the book (of that time) had been done, and it had a show-quality three-tone yellow paint job. Pollon had always loved the ‘32 five-window and this was the one to have. After talking with the owner, Pollon bought the car right at the show for $14,500. For many years, the car was driven regularly and then went up to Pollon’s summer house. More than 25 years march on, and with more modifications to the ‘50 Ford Pickup and a ‘37 Ford Sedan, it was time to redo the ‘32. Having installed a 700R4 overdrive transmission into the ‘37 and finding it much more streetable, it was time to see what could be done to the ‘32. Pollon had a friend who had restored one of his Thunderbirds, and John Bevan was eager to rebuild/restore the Deuce. The general improvements of available parts and technology did not narrow down the choices for the Deuce and it seemed anything that you could imagine could be done. Super power was available but Pollon now was driving a Shelby GT500 and a Ford GT, so the Deuce was more a cruising car. No overkill, just some modernizing the perfect little show car of 1980. 28 Performance Plus APR / may 2014

For power, a GM Performance Parts Ram Jet 350 crate engine with 350 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque was mated to a GM 700R4 overdrive transmission with 2,400-rpm stall speed torque converter and high-gear lock up. The tranny was made prettier with a polished aluminum pan and kept cool with a Bob Drake Transmission Cooler. The rear end is a Currie 9-inch Ford differential with 3.89 ratio. The car had come with a boxed frame and a Chevy 283, and the whole

rolling chassis was sold to fellow hot rodder Bill Townsend, who used it on one of his many cars before passing away. To make sure the car was going to be awesome on long drives, it was decided to use a custom frame, and the choice was a TCI Stage 3 Chassis, smoothed and painted body colour. For the front end, a polished stainless TCI independent front suspension with adjustable coilover shocks, rack-and-pinion steering and polished stainless sway bar were installed.

The Currie rear is held in place with a polished stainless fourbar set-up, Aldan adjustable coilover rear shocks, polished stainless panhard rod and another polished stainless sway bar. To finish off the underside, there are Borgeson u-joints, high-volume in-tank fuel pump with braided stainless fuel lines and Billet Specialties polished fuel filter and power brakes with Wilwood front discs and Ford rear drums. To keep it quiet, Street and Performance Cerama-coated headers spew the hot gases through a polished stainless 21/2 inch exhaust with polished stainless Hushpower mufflers by Muffler Tech in Port Coquitlam. She now rolls on American Racing chrome Torque Thrust wheels, 15x7 rear, 15x6 front,

with BF Goodrich radial 235/75-15 rear, 195/70-15 front, by Tom the Tire Guy. Topside, she is an all-steel Ford five-window body, with Brookville steel fenders, Rootlieb four-piece hood, Bob Drake steel running boards, and Direct Sheetmetal firewall and floor boards. The body and paint is by Still Creek Collision and she is sprayed a 2004 Thunderbird Merlot. Sharing the engine bay is a Walker four-core radiator, SPAL Performance Radiator fan, Lokar throttle cable, trans cable, and trans and engine dipsticks, and Street and Performance polished billet pulley system, alternator and A/C compressor. To keep the inside as pretty as the outside, it has Siena Maple leather on the seats and doors, and Merlot-coloured English wool carpets. Glenn Reid of Progressive Upholstery did the interior with custom console and windshield header. A Billet Specialties banjo steering wheel sits on a polished stainless IDIDIT tilt steering column, and completing the interior are Speciality power windows, Mighty Wiper windshield wiper, Lokar shifter and shift indicator, Classic Instruments Traditional Series gauges, Billet Specialties pedals, Vintage Air heat and cool system, American Autowire Highway 15 wiring panel, and custom Autosound Secret Audio system with ten-stack CD player and iPod dock. The car was finished with plenty of time to make it to the Deuce Days show last year in Victoria, and Pollon made sure he registered early. He had taken her on a few shakedown runs, and the car has all the right parts to be driven wherever it needs to go.... Kamloops, Penticton, Vernon. Now, the question has to be asked, once you are driving a state-of-the-art ‘32 Five-Window coupe, which car gets restored next...the ‘50 Pickup or the ‘37 Sedan? Tough choices.

iston Ring’s 40th Annual Car Show (March 14-16) in Winnipeg was a huge success. Show chairman Bob Chubala did an excellent job locating many prime vehicles from near and far. Bob indicated that he hopes that the car show will be the first event at the expanded BMO Centre in 2016. He expects to double the number of vehicles on display. All four celebrities were well-received. Wrestlers Chris Jericho and Sean Michaels, American Pickers star Danielle Colby, and Gene Winfield with his mobile chop shop wowed the crowds. Club President Pete Toundas came up with the brilliant idea of featuring cars that

The Little Mustang That Could

his 2012 Kona Blue Mustang V6 is lucky to even be part of the story because a V6 Mustang is not the type of car the VP of Mopac Auto Supply would typically drive...especially since they are one of the country’s biggest go-fast parts places. As fortunes turn, this Mustang was no longer wanted by Rick Duda’s daughter, so he took it over, figuring it would make a good grocery getter/winter beater. Before he got the car, his daughter went out to the Friday night street-legal races at Mission Raceway Park and laid down a respectable run in the high 14s. Dropping in a cold air induction system and new Borla axle-back exhaust made the car a bit more respectable as a daily driver... but somehow things got sideways and maybe influenced by too many David and Goliath stories. The Beauty started to become the beast with a complete Eibach Pro one-inch lowering springs suspension package that gave it the right stance. Looking good but needing matching “Go,” a base model polished Procharger P1SC supercharger system was put in with BBK ceramic coated long-tube headers and BBK X-pipe with catalytic convertors and Vibrant resonators. Tuning Mechanic Nick Duda got in contact with Procharger to let them know that some modifications were needed for this system to work properly on a car with an automatic transmission, as some clearance issues came up. Even with the stock rear end, the jump in performance was astounding, with mid 12s, and many of the V8 guys were starting to take notice. The car was now equipped with Ford Racing Boss 302 “Laguna Seca” wheels , but the drag radials were mounted on the stock V6 Mustang wheels, which really made the car’s smaller powerplant stand out. 38 Performance Plus APR / may 2014

Lack of rear gearing prompted a switch to a Shelby GT500 rear end available from the Ford Racing catalogue as a complete drop-in conversion with carbon clutches, Posi and a better 3.73 ratio instead of the stock 3.31 ratio. After a few more low 12-second runs, a smaller pulley was added to the supercharger, giving an increase in boost from 8 lb to 13 lb. The power from the factory was 305 horsepower, and it was now in the 550-horsepower range. The next modification was the Snow Performance Stage 2 Water/ Meth injection system, and the runs got down to high 11s before the season ended. The Snow system is set up to add a 50/50 mix of water and methanol and starts injecting once it hits a certain boost level. For this car, it is programmed to come on once the boost hits 5 to 6 psi, and then feathers in until 8 to 9 psi where it is fully

engaged. The mix is injected into the inlet pipe after the intercooler and it significantly cools the mix and the methanol definitely adds to the party! Other appearance changes were HID headlights and driving lights. The interior is pretty good for these V6 cars, so the big change to

up against a 2009 Shelby GT500 Super Snake with the upgraded Kenne Bell Supercharger. Driver/Tuner Nick Duda admits he caught a better light, but at the end of 1320 feet, the Super Snake just snuck past the “little V6 that could.” In a post-race discussion, a great deal of surprise was expressed by the Shelby owner who was unaware of the vehicle’s V6 powerplant.

the interior is the changing out of the “ugly” shifter bezel to a better looking Hurst shifter bezel. The transmission is a stock six-speed unit that has its shift point changed to shift at the exact peak in power, Although Duda is a mechanic, he says the list of parts they put on but is otherwise completely stock. their Mustang is easily available and would be able to be put on by a talented owner...but the key is the tuning. The car has to be set The fuel pump is also stock, but the fuel injectors have been upgraded to the Ford Racing 47 lb/hr fuel injectors, and they were added after the Procharger system, as the supercharger system is sold as a tuner package for more or less street use. It comes with the supercharger piping and intercooler, but you have to swap out the injectors to accommodate the Shopping List: additional power. Other than tacking on a few performance parts, the S C T t u n er with Mopac custom tuning is key to get the most out of the V6 Mustang. But the biggest limitation is the fact that track safety rules state if you start running quicker than 11.50, a rollbar is required, and that is not going to happen...for now. Although the time slips show the whole story, lots has to be said for showing up on the tires you are going to race with, and going 40 Performance Plus APR / may 2014

up on the dyno with the aid of computers and some knowledge to get the true potential out of these cars, and there are many shops specializing in this...but Mopac has a proven track record. In the future, or with other V6 enthusiasts, greater power is just a matter of a larger Procharger head unit and bigger fuel injectors.
