hen we first learned of the passing of this giant in the automotive world on November 5th, we not only thought of how much he will be missed by his many fans but also envisioned how different this world would be without his vast contribution to the art form we know as the custom car. For over 70 years, the name George Barris has been synonymous with the transformation of ordinary vehicles from mundane to masterpiece. Now, in a tribute to the man who was at the forefront of his field of expertise, we can reflect on his far-reaching legacy. Although George’s title of ‘King of Kustomizers’ was self-proclaimed, it was not only fitting but accurate, in the sense that he would most likely be the one associated with the term custom car by the general public. Even the most uninitiated, non-automotive-oriented person who wouldn’t know George Barris from Chuck Barris, would know of George’s work. I would think few individuals in the civilized world would not be familiar with such television icons as the ‘General Lee’ Charger from the ‘Dukes of Hazard,’ the ‘K.I.T.T.’ Trans Am from ‘Knight Rider’ and of course the sensational ‘Batmobile’. All were vehicles designed and built by Barris Kustom Industries. And how many red blooded youngsters made it through their teen years without building a model car designed by George. I wonder. In addition to the many custom cars George built for numerous television shows, he was also tasked with creating a number of one-off designs for major film projects. This included the ‘Fireball 500’ car (featured in this issue) for the film of the same name staring Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon. And for several decades, George was not only the ‘go to’ guy when Hollywood’s film and TV studios needed a special feature car, he was also a personal friend of many of its major stars. Frank Sinatra, John Wayne, Ringo Star, John Travolta, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and a very long list of others, all had George build custom cars for them personally. This creative genius had his hand in so many aspects of the custom car industry that it is difficult to encompass here. Aside from taking credit for producing over 1,000 custom vehicles, he was known for his photographic and written works that filled various automotive publications. He was also involved in the production of car shows and toured with the Custom Car Caravan sponsored by the AMT Corporation and later the Ford Motor Company. Up until the very end, George was busy overseeing the operation of Barris Kustom Industries based out of North Hollywood, designing clients’ vehicles and making appearances at automotive events globally. His next venture would have been a book signing tour as his son Brett has just released the book ‘King of Kustoms, the art of George Barris’. One factor that separated him from many of his fellow custom car builders was the fact that he was a people person and he made it clear that his favourite achievement was the relationships he forged over his lengthy career. For many years, his fans here on the West Coast were graced with his presence as the Grand Marshal of the B.C. Classic and Custom Car Show in Abbotsford, B.C. With no lack of tales to tell from his storied career, George was a joy to be around and was considered to be the soul of the show. While he excelled at bringing the custom car into the mainstream globally, it was the connection of young people with the passion and excitement of custom car building he developed and perfected that he will always be remembered for. Thank you so much for your immense contribution George. Well done. Very well done indeed.

The Legendary Fireball 500 Car Started lthough it is often said the Batmobile is the most recognizable car in the world, during the late ‘60s the Fireball 500 gave A it a run for the money. Both were built by the legendary George Barris, who recently passed away. Interestingly, both the original Batmobile and the only Fireball 500 were built at the same time in Barris’s Shop. George Barris and his brother got their start building custom cars and modifying cars for customers in the early ‘50s. Soon they were building and modifying cars for the movie and TV studios that were virtually neighbours to the Barris shop. Along with the studios, he also customized many cars for Hollywood celebrities and sometimes would buy cool cars from the studios that they were getting rid of...as in the case of the Monkeemobile built by Dean Jeffries. Jeffries passed it up since he thought they were asking too much money and he could build another one if he wanted one so bad.
reball 500
d Out as a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda! But the Fireball 500 was built for a “B” movie of the same name and was popular with teenagers, and it went on a year-long road trip to garner publicity for the movie....while the Batmobile was in a show for kids. Teenagers in the ‘60s were the up-andcoming demographic and were highly sought after by the major advertisers, and I think they got more exposure with Frankie Avalon and the Fireball 500 than they got from Batman and Robin’s kiddie show. One fellow who noticed the car from Fireball 500 and always wanted it, was B.C. Lower Mainland native Vince Minnis. Although too young to see the movie in the theatre as a kid, his love of movie cars is keen. He has owned the ‘55 Chevy from American Graffiti and Two Lane Blacktop...yes the same car. (The ‘55 destroyed in American Graffiti is a four-door sacrificial car) Collecting all sorts of memorabilia from the Fireball 500, Minnis found the actual Fireball 500 car for sale in some museum in

Kansas in the early ‘90s, but it was way out of reach financially. But he still kept gathering stuff from the movie. Advertising, 45-rpm records, movie posters, lobby cards, advertising pamphlets and an actual 35mm copy of the movie in its original can. Years had ticked by when he saw an ad for a movie car on the internet. It was located in Southern Washington, so he went to have a look. It certainly was the real deal, but again the finances did not work. He made an offer and told them it over. After a time, the father and son who owned the car finally relented, and the Fireball 500 came to the Lower Mainland. The car had been restored since its movie days, and the colour scheme was slightly changed and some decals altered, but the interior was the same one Frankie Avalon had put so many miles on. It even had the same trailer hitch used in the movie to haul Richard Petty’s race car around the country...while the whole country looked surprisingly like Southern California in the movie. The Fireball 500 started out as a 1966 Plymouth Barracuda and was always powered by a 273 cu. in. V8, but always claimed it had a “Hemi.” Barris started with an actual car as opposed to the Batmobile, where he was given a leg up with the Lincoln Futura show car that, dare I say, looks like a red or white-coloured Batmobile. During the Fireball 500 movie, the car is called the Batmobile, prompting Frankie Avalon’s character to quip, “Yeah, I had mine first.” According to the Barris website, the 1966 Barracuda’s most prominent feature is its split cockpit design ala exotic European race car style, with the Barris take on the stabilizing tails sported by race cars such as the Corvette SR-2 and Jag D-types. Instead of only one behind the driver, he added one to the passenger side and they were squared off giving a more menacing look. The door handles were flush safety pull-down handles instead of shaved handles, and the steering wheel was replaced with a 13-inch diameter wheel because of the cramped cockpit. Twin curved windshields that were originally clear, and foam pads, formed very stylized headrests. These combination headrest /tails were formed into one piece with razor sharp lines and fully covered the back seat and the trunk area of the Barracuda. In the rear of the headrest/tails were located extra tail lights of red reflective plastic. Rectangular headlights had to be sourced from Europe for the extended and customized front end. Brushed aluminum extrusions were used as grilles to fill the recessed opening. External rocker Performance Plus Magazine DEC 15 / JAN 16
exhausts were used, covered in aluminum trim, and eight “Ram-Thrust” velocity stacks were attached to the hood for a more performance look...but not attached to the stock Commando mill. The rear quarters of the car were extended four inches and smoothly blended into the rolled-back body panel. Slimline taillights were used and Barris told me the decorative horizontal chrome pieces were from a ‘65 Chevy Malibu. All this had to be removed to get into the trunk area to changes taillights, etc. To further change the look of the car, all the wheel openings were opened up in a curved manner instead of the squarish stock application...known as radiusing. The car has the original 13-inch Rader spoked racing wheels that Barris put on, and are the same as used on the Batmobile. Also according to the Barris website, they claim “To complete the external and high lustrous finish are forty coats of hand rubbed lacquer called Fireheat which consists of multi-colour blends in white pearl of essence, faded into gold Murano, blended throughout in reflective gold leaf, carried through into Kandy Tangerine, then blended into translucent Kandy red and finished off in burgundy. It took four men and six days of spraying to blend these multi colours from white fireball heat into soothing burgundy.” This could be “Barris-speak” for “painted overnight by two very talented guys and shipped in the morning due to time pressure from the studio.” But hey...they also claim “Yeah it’s got a HEMI.” Pure movie magic!! After the filming wrapped, the Fireball 500 spent a long time on a tour promoting the movie. The cars were often repainted or additions added that were not allowed during the rush to build the cars initially. The Fireball got separated seats, hood pins, yellow tinted windshield, bigger more complicated logos, but a simpler paint scheme. Once Vince Minnis had the car, he carefully preserved it in the state he got it in...although being the consummate body man, he always considered repainting it to recreate the movie car. I got to photograph the Fireball 500 for Minnis to create some artwork for Barris to autograph at the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show.

still has the photos I took of the Fireball 500 on their website and the Fireball 500 is soon to be displayed at a Florida car museum. George Barris has created some astounding cars over the years, and we in the Lower Mainland have been lucky to have had Barris as the Grand Marshall of the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show for a decade. Along with the Fireball 500 and the Astra Coupe being displayed at the show, we were lucky to have the actual Batmobile at the show as well as the Stutz Bearcat from the TV show “Bearcats,” and one of the 1967 Oldsmobile Barris 70-X Toronados built for promotion at EXPO 67. We certainly have been luckier than most, and will miss the King Of Kustoms for a very long time! George Barris was coming to town and not only was the Fireball 500 on hand, but also the Astra Coupe that was built in the early ‘50s by Jay Everett and then modified by Barris in the early ‘60s. JF Kustoms out of Osoyoos, B.C. had completely restored the car for Barry Blomme, and Barris was happy to see both cars. I had created montage portraits of both cars and Barris invited me down to his North Hollywood shop to photograph the Batmobile and the Monkeemobile to create portraits for him. The trip to Barris’s shop is memorable and somewhat surreal and I highly recommend going to see it...while you still can. The final part of the story is a bit sad in that Minnis loved the Fireball 500 and all the memorabilia he had collected...about 300 pieces...but he always thought more people should be able to see the car. He had taken it to a show in Ontario in 2009 and Frankie Avalon got to be reunited with the car again. Finally, after more than a decade of owning the Fireball 500, Minnis took it to Barrett Jackson in 2015 and got to watch George Barris whip up the excited crowd. The Barrett Jackson website

National Corvette Museum Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

ven if you’ve never been to Bowling Green, Kentucky, you’ve probably heard of the National Corvette Museum (NCM) that received international fame in early 2014 when a nine-metre-deep sinkhole developed inside, swallowing up several historic vehicles. Turns out it wasn’t all bad. “After the sinkhole happened, we decided to make the best of the situation — or rather, make lemonade,” says Katie Frassinelli, NCM marketing and communications manager. “The sinkhole itself, as well as the eight damaged Corvettes, became a major draw for visitors, resulting in a 67 percent increase in tourism for 2014.” The museum made headlines again in the fall when the most valuable of the unlucky vehicles, the 1,000,000th production Corvette, was restored, down to the banner adorning the windshield. It resides near the same place it fell, alongside two others that were fixed as well as the ones deemed too far gone to salvage. NCM is located right off I-65, and the first thing people usually notice about the museum is Skydome, a bright yellow cone-shaped building with a pointy red top, now also known as ground zero. “One of the first questions we get is ‘what’s the story behind the big yellow dome?’” says Frassinelli..“Our iconic Skydome’s design is two-fold. On the one hand, if you turn it on its side, it looks like the taillights of a 1960s Corvette. The other idea was to create something eye-catching that you can see from the interstate.” Built in 1994, NCM opened as a tribute to the iconic American sports car, which happens to be built less than half a kilometre away at the Bowling Green Assembly Plant. And what a tribute it is: the facility measures 115,000 square-feet in size, and like the Corvette, features unique design cues such as curved walls mixed with traditional structural shapes. 14 Performance Plus Magazine DEC 15 / JAN 16

Passing through the entrance way, the lobby is basically a high-performance Chevrolet dealership, except that everything is already sold. Various brand new models of the current seventh-generation C7 Corvette line the sides, awaiting their owners. Any ‘Vette customer can choose to take the delivery of his or her new car at the museum, and then take a VIP tour before driving off in their shiny new purchase. After buying your tickets at the front counter ($10 adults, $8 seniors, $5 children), embark on the self-guided tour that starts with a short film, explaining NCM’s humble beginnings starting out as the brainchild of an organized group of enthusiasts dedicated to the restoration, preservation and enjoyment of the classic vehicles. “When the National Corvette Restorers Society was looking to build a library and archives for Corvette, General Motors did not financially support it. Their reasoning was that if they funded a museum for Corvette, then they’d have to fund museums for other models, too,” says Frassinelli.

ing the event, and a monitor playing back security footage of the ground collapsing somewhere around 5:00 am. Venture on to the Performance Area, a circular 24-metre-diameter room, showcasing famous race cars through different eras. Technology buffs will appreciate the powertrains that have been cutaway to give a glimpse of what’s inside the high-horsepower engines. You can’t drive an actual Corvette here, but you can get pretty close with the two driving simulators boasting accurate cockpits. The biggest single display at NCM is the aforementioned Skydome with its 30-metre-high glass ceiling. The floor has been rebuilt and reinforced, and this is where you will find rare production vehicles on-loan from private collectors, and the eight victimized Corvettes. The repaired 1,000,000th Corvette stands in stark contrast to the crushed blob of glass and metal that was once the 1,500,000th built in 2009. Following the movie, travel back to the 1950s Main Street in Nostalgia Alley, complete with mid-century barbershop, soda fountain and service station. Learn about the “father” of the Corvette, Zora Arkus-Duntov, a Belgian engineer and race car driver who joined General Motors and helped turn the original roadster into a proper sports car.
Patrons visiting before January 8 will get a chance to see the Car Part Art installation in the Exhibit Hall portion of NCM. A group of artists working in the medium of rubber, steel and cast iron have taken what some might consider scrap and have turned it into creations like an Eiffel Tower made from tire tread, and a painted tree with various pieces of automotive lighting hanging from its branches.
The permanent exhibit should be completed by the New Year, but in the meantime, a temporary section has been set up to illustrate The museum is located at 350 Corvette Drive in Bowling Green, everything related to the infamous sinkhole. There are statistics open daily from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, visit detailing the amount of international media coverage surround- www.corvettemuseum.org.

The show serves as the perfect platform for aftermarket automotive manufacturers and OE manufacturers to display their latest and greatest products to people involved in the automotive industry. It truly is the premier automotive specialty products trade show event in the world as it brings together professionals from all over the industry in one place, which is a great opportunity to see everything new in products, technologies and even business strategies. Over the next few pages, you will see some of the ‘can’t miss’ highlights from this year’s iteration. 1965 Carbon-Fibre Widebody Mustang Revealed Ringbrothers introduced the all-carbon-fibre 1965 widebody Ford Mustang Fastback, also known as Espionage, at the BASF booth. The engineers didn’t just make a carbon copy of the original ’65 ‘Stang out of carbon fibre, but took the original shape and widened it 2-inches on each side, as well as a number of other small tweaks. Under the hood of the Espionage is a Wegner Motorsports 427-cid LS7 engine with a Whipple supercharger pushing output to an astounding 959 horsepower and 858 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a Tremec T56 transmission and the power is put to the rear wheels through a custom driveshaft into a Ford 9-inch rear end. 20 Performance Plus Magazine DEC 15 / JAN 16

Record-Setting 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe Revealed The Shell booth was the setting for the unveiling of the original (chassis #CSX2287) 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona prototype built entirely at the Shelby American race shop in Venice, California. It is just one of six such cars built between 1964 and 1965 and has an extensive and impressive racing history such as competing at Daytona, Reims, Le Mans and Tour de France, just to name a few. In March 1964, Dave MacDonald and Bob Holbert piloted the car to a win in the GT class at the 12 hours of Sebring. The car is also perhaps best known for setting 25 USAC/FIA world speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah ending in November 1965. All traces of the car were lost by the mid-’70s and it didn’t reappear until 2001 in a rental storage unit in California. Due to a then-estimated worth of over $4,000,000, an extensive legal battle began after the owner of the storage unit died, and today it sits as part of the permanent collection at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia, PA, USA. New 1969 CR1 Camaro Unveiled at Centerforce Booth A new 1969 CR1 Camaro was revealed for the first time at the show in the Centerforce Clutches booth. This example began as a stock ’69 Camaro and then was fitted with a custom CR Supercars-designed rear spoiler and front fascia as well as PIAA driving lights. Under the hood of the CR1 is a Chevrolet Performance LS7 crate engine complete with a Concept One pulley system, custom longtube headers, and a MagnaFlow 3-inch exhaust. The power is sent to the rear wheels through a Centerforce clutch, Tremec six-speed manual transmission and a 9-inch Strange Engineering rear end with 3.89 gears and Posi-Traction. The car handles like a modern race car thanks to Chris Alston’s Chassisworks and their tubular A-arm front suspension and four link rear suspension complete with adjustable coil overs all around. Finally, the stunning exterior is finished in a beautiful custom shade of matte blue metallic paint.

eneral Motors’ Pontiac division may now be extinct, but for a time, the brand was responsible for bridging the gap between the value-conscious Chevrolet division and the company’s more premium divisions. Pontiac models were sporty, luxurious, and typically, engineered to deliver a performance driving experience. The iconic Pontiac GTO initially arrived in showrooms in 1964 as a performance option package on the company’s new Tempest model. This marketing move proved a success, so the product planners recognized that they had an opportunity to create a stand-alone model using the GTO designation. The new car arrived for 1965 and featured more aerodynamic styling than the Tempest, and was offered in coupe, hardtop and convertible form. The 1966 GTO was slightly longer and wider than the Tempest and featured a wider rear track, but it retained that model’s wheelbase. As a result of these modifications, the GTO was imposing, and had the performance car stance favoured by enthusiast drivers. Aggressive styling cues also set the car apart from other Pontiac models, as the car has pronounced “Coke-bottle” side contours, a recessed rear window, louvred taillights, stacked headlights, and a wide grille. This particular example belongs to long-time Kelowna resident Gary Holling. Holling has always been a General Motors man, but his real passion has always been for the GTO models, of which he has owned four. His interest in the famed Pontiac line of muscle machines began in 1976, when he purchased his first GTO, a 1971 model, which he enjoyed thoroughly for the next 12 years. “It was that car that hooked me on GTOs,” recalled Holling, as we reminisced about his interest in muscle cars. “This particular car is my fourth Goat, but I have also owned another 1966 and a 1969 model that was in really sad shape, but the plan was to use the latter car for parts for the 1971.” Holling regrets selling his first 1966 model, as it was a numbers matching 389 TriPower car with a four-speed gearbox and posi-traction. “I owned that car for 13 years and really wish I still had it, as it was a great car with all the options. In fact, it even had the TriPower air pan so the hood scoop was functional, which is rather rare for these cars.” The dedicated Pontiac fan is quick to confess that he has never been interested in later GTO models, as Pontiac had lost its way somewhat when it came to the evolution of the nameplate. “The 1972 GTO had less horsepower, and the 1973 and 1974 cars weren’t even really GTOs! As far as I am concerned, they were Grand-Ams! Even worse, the 1974 model is simply a Ventura with lipstick on it to make it look special.” Mr. Holling acquired this almost-stock 1966 GTO five years ago. While not a numbers matching car like his former ‘66 model, it still has the heart of a Goat. The previous owner had hired a Vancouver shop that specializes in Pontiac engines to replace the original 389 with a 400 from a 1969 model. Gary has been working around cars since he was sixteen years old, so he tries to do most of the maintenance and restoration work on his project cars himself. He enjoys working on older cars because if you suffer a breakdown, you can usually find a way to remedy the situation if you possess basic mechanical knowledge. A little research helped Holling determine that this car had been assembled in Baltimore, and based on the its serial number, it is an early production model. He also discovered that the car was originally black in colour with a black top and interior. “If I was to decide to restore the car, I would contact the Pontiac Historical Society to ensure all the details were correct, but I bought this car as a fun driver. The quality of the paint is obviously not show quality, and she has a couple of quirks, but all fifty-year-olds do. And unfortunately, the car has a few dings and scrapes from parking lot battles with car doors.”
The affable businessman has only put about 4,000 miles on the car over the five years that he has owned it, but admits that he has enjoyed every single one as the car has had a few modifications over the years to help improve on its performance. “The previous owner installed a fourcore aluminum radiator and an electric fan, as he was concerned about the car overheating, which can be a real concern in an arid region like the Okanagan Valley. If you are stuck in traffic, you can simply switch the fan on to help keep the engine cool. A quick road test through the winding back roads of Kelowna revealed that for the period, the GTO was a capable handler, and despite the absence of power brakes, the car stopped with authority. Holling added a rear sway bar to the car, a feature that would arrive on later models, which greatly reduced the amount of lean and body roll and helped get power to the ground. The car accelerates strong as you guide the long arm of the floor-mounted, four-speed manual transmission up and down the gearbox, and it turns really nicely as GM always equipped the model with a fast steering box. While not a daily driver, Gary likes to use the classic Pontiac muscle car to 30 Performance Plus Magazine DEC 15 / JAN 16
cruise to local car shows and meet other car people. He also likes to get behind the wheel and explore Kelowna and its environs when the weather cooperates. “This car has the 3.55 gears which are great for driving around town, but not great for long trips as they tend to make the engine rev a little high at upper highway speeds.” The interior of the 1966 GTO is roomy enough for five adults and the car came equipped with Strato bucket seats which featured high backs and thinner contoured cushions. Adjustable head restraints were available as an option. A redesigned instrument panel comprised four circular gauges and an attractive walnut trim panel. Hollings has other four-wheeled projects on the go, but he always makes sure that the GTO gets special attention. It is parked in the garage, serviced regularly, and properly winterized in the fall. “I fire the car up occasionally to make sure everything is operating as it should, and of course to hear that glorious rumble from the big V8. Nothing sounds like an old V8-powered muscle car!”

New Quick Cool Carburetor Insulator Kit from Quick Fuel Technology Quick Fuel Technology’s new Quick Cool carb insulator kit reduces heat transfer to the carburetor by both deflecting heat away from the carb main body and fuel bowl area, and also reducing heat transfer from the manifold flange to the carb base. This eliminates elevated fuel temperatures which is the cause of many problems related to the carburetor such as vapour lock, erratic idle and unresponsiveness to adjustments. The kit is a thin aluminum poly-core sandwich that fits between the carburetor and manifold. It is designed for 4150-style carb flanges and fits Holley, QFT, and Street Demon carbs. AMSOIL Expands Signature Series Line with 0W-40 Synthetic Motor Oil AMSOIL has expanded its premium Signature Series synthetic motor oil line by adding a 0W-40 viscosity that is ideal for use with high horsepower Chrysler and Nissan applications. The oil is formulated to withstand the stress and high heat associated with these engines by providing outstanding wear protection and promoting engine longevity. The Signature Series engine lubricant reduces oil consumption and emissions while resisting thermal breakdown and viscosity loss due to mechanical shear. It is available for a number of applications including Dodge Charger and Challenger 6.1L and 6.4L, Dodge Viper 8.3L and 8.4L and Nissan GT-R just to name a few.
