kanagan Falls resident Roger Hawthorne appreciates the finer things in life. As the proprietor of the tranquil Bighorn Ridge Guest House, the affable Hawthorne seeks to deliver perfection to his guests, but he also looks for the same in his rides. Hawthorne has owned a large number of interesting performance and luxury vehicles over the years, but at the moment, his preference is classic American muscle. A couple of years ago, he found himself searching far and wide for a well-sorted Camaro. Ultimately he discovered a pretty special 1968 model just up the valley in neighbouring Kelowna, B.C. This stunning Chevrolet Camaro SS is cloaked in factory-correct Grecian Green paint and sports subtle SS stripes, a

amaro SS combination that really enhances the curvaceous Camaro’s body lines. The car had been purchased by a local enthusiast who had imported it from the United States before having a ground-up restoration completed on the car. It was a bucket list purchase, but during the three years that he owned it he put less than 300 miles on it as he was afraid to leave it anywhere. Roger was more than happy to step in and alleviate that stress by taking this beautiful machine off his hands. “I had my mind set on a Z/28 until I saw this car and realized just what a rare and special car it is,” said Hawthorne. “There are three different variants of the 396 engine and this one is the biggest of those, and it is one sweet engine!” Hawthorne’s SS (Super Sport) features a 396 cubic-inch (6.5-litre) V8 engine under its shapely hood, that the factory re-

ports to generate a healthy 375-horsepower and 415 pounds-feet of torque, although in reality, these two numbers are probably higher. There were approximately 4,800 of these classic muscle machines made that year (in this configuration) which makes it rarer than the Camaro Z/28 of the same period. The quality of the restoration impressed the retired engineer, who was especially fond of the fact that the car was mechanically sound and basically complete. “As I didn’t do the restoration myself, I am uncertain if all the components and parts are factory original to the car, but of one thing I am certain, and that is that they are all authentic General Motors parts. This is the only way to go with a car like this in order to maintain its collectability and value.” As a regular at the Barrett-Jackson auctions, Mr. Hawthorne has a deep and working knowledge of the collector car hobby and all of its idiosyncrasies. “I should point out that all the major components on this Camaro are numbers matching, but don’t even get me started on opening that can of worms, as it will no doubt lead to an argument as to how many different components need to be considered for a car to wear that label.”

After taking delivery of the car Hawthorne swapped out the tires and gave it a thorough mechanical inspection. “I put the BF Goodrich T/A radials on it and had some more work done to the motor, but this car was in such exceptional shape that I didn’t need to remedy much,” Roger said with a look of satisfaction. In 1967, the Camaro was introduced by General Motors to counter the success of the Ford Mustang, and for 1968 there were several significant changes made in the styling department. Chevrolet introduced a fresh-air inlet system called Astro Ventilation, which relegated the side vent windows to the obsolescence bin. The car also gained side marker lights front and rear, and divided rear taillights. The front running lights took on an oval shape, and big block SS models received a touch of flash as chrome inserts - designed to resemble velocity stacks - grace the hood. I had the opportunity to take the car on an invigorating road test through the winding roads of Okanagan Falls and Penticton that revealed that for a car from this period, the Camaro SS delivers a robust ride and was more than content to carve its way through turns with a just a hint of tail wag. I found myself infatuated by the car as I wound my way towards Skaha Lake where the raucous

growl of the car’s big-block power plant echoed off the steep rock faces and tickled my ears, albeit in a good way. Hawthorne is so meticulous with regards to both maintenance and the minute adjustment of the car’s mechanical bits that this muscular Chevrolet handles and performs as if new. The car accelerated with authority as its nose rose gently skyward towards the puffy clouds that dominated the sky that day, as the three-speed automatic transmission made quick and efficient transitions up and down the gearbox. Steering was light when at speed, and the Camaro tracked true with surprising precision. The brake pedal transmitted positive feedback to the ball of my booted foot and the brakes proved well-suited to this application, as they managed to haul the iconic muscle car back under control with relative ease and remained fade-free for the duration of my test drive. The interior of the first generation Camaros is roomy enough for five adults and the SS came equipped with low back bucket seats up front, and a bench in the rear. The dash is uncluttered and comprised of a compact gauge cluster which houses a large tachometer and speedometer. A secondary instrument panel resides in a quad-stack on the centre console just aft of the centrally-mounted shift lever. “This is the third late-1960s Camaro that I have had the pleasure to own since I was a kid,” shared Hawthorne to the increasingly envious author, “and this one is by far the best of the bunch. I plan to keep this car for a long time as I love how it drives and few things appeal to me as much as the sounds made by a big V8-powered muscle car!” 10 PERFORMANCE PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

FEATURE: ADIRONDACK NATIONALS
The Three Pedal Nationals
Story and photos by Paul Kennedy
T
he 28th annual Adirondack Nationals were held from September 8-11th 2016, on the grounds of the Fort William Henry Resort at the southern tip of 32 mile-long Lake George in northern New York state. It was sponsored, as usual, by the Albany Rods and Kustoms car club, and welcomed over 1,600 cars from 1979 and earlier. The special guest this year was Steve Darnell from Welderup and Vegas Rat Rods. The registration process started on February 1st, and all entries had to use the US Postal Service and be postmarked in the USA. The entries cannot be couriered, or sent in early, with registration limited to between 1600 and 1700 cars. What this means for Canadian registrants is that they must travel to the US on February 1st to mail their registrations. This year, I took mine, and three from friends in Ottawa, to the Wellesley Island Post Office on February 1st. Since I live in Kingston, this is only a 45 minute trip. We all got in, with my registration number being number 170. It worked! It was a beautiful morning on September 9th as my friend Barry Burns and I made our way east to link up with my friend Mark Schmidtke, from Ottawa, to have breakfast in Spencerville, just across the border from Ogdensberg, NY. After breakfast, we went south on willy-nilly country roads and encountered some wet roads but thankfully no rain, so we made it to Lake George by 2:00 pm. We checked into our hotel, travelled the kilometre to the entry gate, and then set up my car on the lower grass field. 16 PERFORMANCE PLUS MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016

We walked all over the grounds, and spotted some of the Ottawa people we knew. There were many Ontario cars at the show, so we passed some time chatting with our countrymen and fellow gearheads. We left the show at about 5:00 pm, went for supper in Glens Falls, then returned to Lake George to participate in the street cruising. The police even closed down the street to show cars only, since participant cars had a large circular
decal on the upper corner of the windshield on the driver’s side. There were a few quick burnouts, but no smoke shows, as the police were keeping a definite lid on anything dangerous. It was very crowded, so the cruising was very slow, and many pedestrians and spectators were walking on the road. Not conducive to burnouts at all! There were as many cars cruising or parked, as there were on the show grounds, so you really get to eyeball over 2,000 cars each day. Saturday was a beautiful day. Mild temperatures, blue skies and some high-up fluffy white clouds. We got to park at the back of the Fort William Henry Resort hotel, with great views over Lake George. After we had made it about half way through the show field, Barry commented on how many manual transmission cars there were. So we started to keep track of them, just for laughs. There were a large number, and in cars you wouldn’t necessarily think of as manual material. Big Chevys, Buicks,

Sunday dawned quite overcast, and it had rained overnight, so there was a whole lot of chamoising going on. After breakfast, we went to the show grounds to see the Favorite 50 vehicles, and to see Mark’s jacket. We left the show in bright sunlight by about 10:30 am, and made our way home under beautiful skies. The traffic was light and we were home by 2:30 pm. Was the show worth the fourhour drive? YES. If you ever get the chance to go, do so - it is an outstanding setting and event.

tarting up any new business is never easy, but when you’re resurrecting a name that had been established and successful for the better part of 15 years, it can certainly provide a boost. That’s just what happened when new owner Matt Diederichs decided to resurrect The Muscle Car Shop located in Calgary, Alberta. The previous owner had started the business back in 2001 and after a successful run decided to retire in 2014 and close up shop, placing all remaining inventory in storage. Now in 2016, Matt saw an opportunity and purchased a warehouse/showroom, picked up
many of the product offerings in a much more centralized way, making it even easier for customers to find the exact products they’re looking for. In talking with Matt about the challenges of re-opening a business, one of the bigger ones he mentioned was getting the word out that the business is back up and running. He made it clear that a great way to do this, especially in 2016, was to have a much bigger online presence which is all-new to the company. As mentioned before, there are plans in place to improve the online and social media presence, which is certainly one of the best ways to reach large groups of people. Also in the works is a newsletter that will be sent out showcasing product specials. So if you are looking for just about any restoration part for your muscle car, there are few better places to look than The Muscle Car Shop. Give them a call at 403-569-1957, email info@themusclecarshop.ca, check out their website at www.themusclecarshop.ca, or show up in person to their shop at 6–3600 21 Street NE in Calgary, Alberta. Ringbrothers Debut 1969 Chevrolet Camaro G-Code The Ringbrothers were at it once again at the 2016 SEMA Show, and this time they were debuting a 1969 Camaro they call G-Code. Nearly every single body part on the car has been completely customized including the bumpers and grille, while the interior has also been customized by Upholstery Unlimited. Under the hood of this exquisite vehicle is a 6.2L LS3 V8 engine that was bored out to increase the displacement to 416 cubic inches (6.8L), and then equipped with a Whipple Supercharger, working together to produce nearly 1,000 horsepower. The unique blue colour, HRE wheels reminiscent of 1980s Camaros, and carbon fibre hood finished off what truly is a great looking build.

Battle of the Builders Crowns 2016 Winner The 3rd Annual Battle of the Builders Award Winner was crowned at SEMA Ignited, which was an after-party coming at the tail-end of the 2016 SEMA Show. The competition starts with 260 possible candidates all displaying their builds at the show and is trimmed down first to 21 and then to 10 and then finally down to three finalists on the last day of the show, with the winner being announced at SEMA Ignited. This year, the top 3 came down to Jesse Greening with his 1961 Chevrolet two-door bubble top sedan, Cam Miller with a resto-modded 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, and Kyle Tuck with his blacked-out 1941 Willys Coupe. The ’61 Chevy was thought to be the favourite heading into the final three, but at the end, Cam Miller and his ’69 Camaro was named the winner and crowned champion of the 2016 version of Battle of the Builders, with Jesse Greening placing 2nd and Kyle Tucker coming in 3rd. Miller owns HS Customs based out of Logan, Utah, and dedicated three years of his life to the build. For a complete list of finalists and photos of the builds themselves, check out www.sema.org.

Flex-a-lite 200 Dehumidifier Helps Control Humidity in Garages The new Flex-a-lite 200 Dehumidifier is able to help keep humidity in garages under control which helps protect cars and tools from rust and other issues that can arise from exposure to excessive moisture. High humidity environments during winter and summer months can promote rust on sheet metal and chassis components and can also corrode tools or chrome finishes. The Dehumidifier can remove up to 74 pints of water per day at 80-degrees Fahrenheit and 60 percent relative humidity, and has an on-board humidistat to set the optimum humidity level for that garage. Additionally the product can also be used to dry an area after flooding or to help dry wet materials. For more information please go to www.flex-a-lite.com
