Ferocious Cougar Sheldon Potts’ 1968 Mercury Cougar
The other package was called the “XR7-G.” Starting with the XR7 model, all of its upgrades include these features hen deciding what collector car to finally buy, one looks at plus many more. Vinyl roof covering, leather seats, woodthe cool cars you have seen growing up, and take special grained dash with tachometer, trip odometer, oil pressure interest in ones you have actually owned. This seemed an easy and amp gauges, map lights and rear seat courtesy lighting. task for B.C. native Sheldon Potts, whose first car was a 1968 Cougar, followed with a 1968 Firebird and then a 1972 Challenger and later a mid ‘70s Camaro. With this long a shopping list, Potts should have been able to find the car of his dreams in a weekend. Sadly, he had set his sights on the Holy Grail of his list...a 1968 Hertz Cougar...but only 188 were produced. To buy a special edition Gurney Cougar seemed easier, but he still was not able to find a Gurney Cougar intact and for sale. Interestingly, there were two cars built with Gurney’s name attached to them. The prominence of the SCCA Group II sedan racing series, aka TransAm, using stock-looking Detroit cars, was not lost on Lincoln Mercury. Dan Gurney was Captain and his name and likeness were associated with Mercury’s advertising plans for the Cougar. According to Gurney, his name and likeness was all he contributed to the Cougar Gurney Specials. To add to the confusion, in 1968 there were two Gurney packages. For 1968, Lincoln Mercury produced 11,899 Dan Gurney Specials and only one of these was an XR7 model. They built 188 of the “XR7-G” cars for Hertz and also made available to the public 431 non-Hertz XR7-G cars. No 1967 or 1968 Cougars were factory convertibles; the American Sunroof Company installed all the Cougar sunroofs and also was known to convert customer’s cars over to convertibles. The less-expensive “Dan Gurney Special” for 1968 offered vinyl seat upholstery and standard Cougar interior, turbine wheel covers and a Dan Gurney Special sticker in the passenger rear window. One buyer opted for this package to go on a fancier XR7 model. 28 Performance Plus Feb / mar 2015
A special console had fog lamp switches and switches for optional sunroof. There was a special front valance housing fog lamps, locking hood pins, special XR7-G badges, remote control “bullet shaped” mirrors and an extra-loud horn! Of course, the piece de resistance is the special Gurney fibreglass hood complete with two non-functional scoops, unless you ponied up for the 428 CJ, and then the scoops are functional. To further add confusion between the XR7-G and the Dan Gurney Special, some of the XR7-G cars had Rader aluminum wheels and some had XR7-G centre caps on Cougar styledsteel wheels. One other Cougar was available in 1968. The GT-E came with a big-block; some were 428s and some were even 427 side oilers, and the ‘68 Cougar was the last factory car from Ford with the legendary side oiler 427! The Cougar was also only offered with a V8; no six-cylinder was offered in the ‘60s.
It was a 1968 Cougar XR7 that had started with a 390 with standard heads breathing through a two-barrel carb. The car also was ordered all those years ago with a tilt-away steering wheel and rear passenger shoulder belts; only 99 of the 1968 Cougars came that way.
After Potts had exhausted the internet and forums looking for a good Cougar, he found one going to auction in late 2006 at the Hilton Head Auction in South Carolina. He got the Auction documentation and after successfully bidding over the phone, he got the car of his dreams.
According to the Marti Report, this Cardinal Red Cougar was built in the Dearborn factory with “Whisperaire” air conditioning, C-6 Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic transmission, 2.75 standard axle ratio and whitewall tires on styled steel wheels. “Tilt-Away” steering wheel, power brakes, steering, tinted glass, AM/FM radio,

The front seats were leather but not at all comfortable for Sheldon and his wife, so they found a set of leather seats out of a fancy late-model Mustang, and now they can drive long distances without worrying about backaches. The steering wheel got changed but the rest of the interior looks to be original and very functional. A few years back, the car was entered into a contest and it got a cool rear window decal from a local FM radio station. Although the contest is long gone, the decal seems to keep the car cooler in the summer, so it gets to stay. The car was bought and refinished to be driven, and as well as many local shows, it has gone to Port Angeles for car shows and to the West Coast Cougar Show in Salem, Oregon, and will continue going as long as possible - or until a 1968 Hertz Cougar comes along... shoulder belts all around and the leather seats looked after the driving. For appearances, it was ordered with the black vinyl roof, door edge guards, and front and rear bumper guards, and it was built four days ahead of schedule on February 5, 1968.
The numbers and some data were collected from the owner Sheldon Potts, as well as a few websites, and the author appreciates these parties for their data and keeping the car hobby alive and well, and for being a great source of facts for car collectors and enthusiasts.
The car had not got too far from home in its first 38 years, as it was originally sold new in Jacksonville, Florida. When http://xr7g.mercurycougarregistry.com/history/ the car got home, it had a white vinyl roof, probably to less- http://www.cougarclub.org/production.htm en the harshness of the Southern sun, and unfortunately, http://www2.cougarpartscatalog.com due to lots of the vinyl roof cars not having paint applied under the vinyl before installation, rust can be a problem. The lower edge of the roof at the trunk area was showing problems and repairs were started. The repairs turned into a major campaign to make a perfect Cougar. Today, we get to see a car that was perfectly drivable with some patina, changed into a freshly rebuilt 390, fresh black vinyl roof and gleaming new Cardinal Red paint with correct pinstripes. Countless hours were spent to make the car right, and if it was not available from Westcoast Classic Cougars, it was not used. The final work was done by Randy Stockbruegger. After upgrading the power of the engine, the stock steel wheels got changed to beefier Weld Wheels and bigger tires because this car gets to go play every now and then..

This engine upgrade is the second-stage build for the 1991 Ford 5.0L. We are using a set of Trick Flow Twisted Wedge heads along with some other components from the first stage. Trick Flow is the go-to company when it comes to small-block Ford performance heads, with dozens of choices, chamber volumes, valve sizes and more. With the injection system, we ordered a Holley fuel pump kit. It came with two filters, fuel pump, an array of fittings, 16 feet of high pressure fuel line and a pressure regulator.
There are four fuel injectors, all of which inject fuel below the throttle plates. The throttle body is rated at 950 cfm and up to 600-hp engines. The throttle body fits all square-bore-type intake manifolds. The braided hose connects the two fuel rails together. Fuel goes into one rail and returns to the pressure regulator then back to the fuel tank from the other.
The heart of the system is the injection computer and handheld programmer, used for initial set-up and diagnostics.

The system comes with an array of studs for the throttle plate to attach to a wide array of throttle cables.
The pressure regulator can supply two fuel rails, has a provision for the fuel pressure gauge (the set screw), and a return-to-tank port.
The fuel system includes a pre-pump filter, high-volume fuel pump and after filter. It’s best to install the assembly as close to the tank as possible and as far below the centre line of the tank as you can.

The super stock line ends are very easy to install – but near impossible to take back apart (ask me, I tried), so make sure you measure twice and cut once. The fuel line is also of an excellent quality. If anything, Holley needs to include a little more hose in the kit. They welcomed my feedback and asked me to make some measurements, and they let their techs know. I needed one extra 6-foot length, and what I got from the parts store was of such an inferior type, I ordered and waited for more from Holley.
The Terminator system can control spark to any performance distributor and ignition box, and there are several diagrams included depending on your system, but I’m a big fan of GM HEI-style conversion distributors. I have used these Proform distributors on three different engine builds (none of them GM engines) with great success, and at under $200.00, they are a great buy. One-wire hook up and a tach feed so the injection knows the RPM for the rev limiter and fuel metering. One thing that is needed on Ford engines with a roller cam is to replace the cast iron distributor gear with a bronze gear. I got this one from Comp Cams when I built the bottom end of the engine.

You might not be familiar with this small canister but it’s a Fitch Fuel Catalyst System. I have used one in the past with great results on a stroker 4.6L sixcylinder I built a few years ago. The engine produced lower emissions and increased fuel economy (go ahead, call voodoo, but I have the Air Care results to prove it). As it works by enriching the fuel in the fuel flow, I wanted it installed before the self-programming stage took place with the new injection.
A Lokar gas pedal was used to best fit in the engine bay, MSD 8.5mm ignition wires provide spark and all that was needed was to set the initial parameters, turn the key and let the engine warm up. After that you need to drive in as many conditions you will expect to find during the way you plan to drive the vehicle and the computer will fine tune the fuel system via the wide band O2 sensor in the exhaust, and of course, air density and engine temps.
With the engine at Top Dead Centre and the vacuum advance in the position that would allow best adjustment, the distributor was dropped in and the terminal that lined up with the rotor was marked with a 1.
The only sensor with the kit that doesn’t reside on the throttle body is a water temp sensor. It, of course, needs to go into the intake manifold in the water flow passage. The harness is well-marked, and you just need to work your way around and snap all the fittings together.

Not easy to take pictures of the handheld, but during the setup wizard, you’re asked a few simple questions, above or below 400 cubic inches, cam type, ignition type, etc, and you need to press the gas pedal twice and hit OK. After that, the fuel pump primes and you can turn the key. Once up to 160 degrees, the computer goes into a learning process. You can monitor the engine’s progress, fuel ratio, set RPM at idle targets, set the rev limiter, then get out and drive it in as many types of scenarios as you can and the system will learn as you drive.
