AEM Cold Air Intake for 2015 Subaru WRX STI
Advanced Engine Management (AEM) has created an aftermarket cold air intake system for the 2015 Subaru WRX STi which produces an impressive maximum 32 horsepower gain at the wheels, plus a 31 lb-ft torque gain. The new system positions the AEM Dryflow Air Filter in a location near the front of the car which helps pull fresh air from outside the engine compartment as cooler air results in more power. Sweet and Mean Terry Friesen’s 1957 Ford

The car was originally from Oklahoma and was absolutely rust-free. Pure un-smashed body lines only accented the ome cars just stick in your memory, like seeing a ‘57 Ford dubbed great styling of the car, and Friesen made constant jabs about “Legal Cheater” racing at Mission in the early ‘70s stuck in Ab- when he owns the car, he is going to do this and that to it. botsford resident Terry Friesen’s young mind. Patience paid off and after first seeing the car in 1995, a call fiGrowing up in a family that loved Fords and ran the local Ford nally came in that it might be up for sale in 2009...but it took until Dealership back in the day meant a lot of Fords would pass through 2012 for the paperwork to actually get signed. The final straw was Dickerboom’s wife no longer wanted to drive such a “rowdy”car.

Now that the car was his, he started thinking about what to do with it, and he remembered all the great coverage the original “Legal Cheater” ‘57 Ford got in Car Craft magazine in the day, and decided not to go the recreation route. The “Legal Cheater” ‘57 Ford had been bought by a Canadian back in 1969 after a long and successful career racing NHRA events up and

a MagnaFlow 2.5 stainless exhaust with resonators and that pretty much drowns out the old school AM/FM Cassette. While the interior was left alone, the car came to Friesen rolling on a set of stock wheels with full hubcaps. He knew back in ‘57, the NASCAR guys ran the white ‘57s with coloured wheels, and one of the choices was a sharp-looking bronze. So, a set of painted 15x7s with Goodrich T/As were put on it without beauty rings, to give it the NASCAR look. Friesen drove it to Puyallup for the Goodguys run and earlier in July, went to the Vintage Road Races in Seattle. He got to meet Parnelli Jones, who drove a white ‘57 but could not remember the wheel colour....they enough to handle the load. As a result, these events are staged less as a motor race and more as a fast-paced display of automotive history. The British Columbia Historic Motor Races (BCHMR) have been held annually since 1981, first at the infamous Westwood circuit in Coquitlam, and now at the River’s Edge Road Course at Mission Raceway Park. Vintage racing is very popular in the Pacific Northwest, so it should come as no surprise that the Mission event has grown to become the largest vintage racing event in Western Canada. This year’s event took place August 15-17, and despite a brief period of showers on the Saturday, the annual festival of speed went off without a hitch as participants and fans alike enjoyed the race action as well as the amazing array of cars on display in both the paddock and the “Field of Dreams” car corral.

The weekend kicks off with one of the most popular social events on the racing calendar. In an effort to keep the memories of Westwood alive, and rekindle old friendships and rivalries, the Vintage Racing Club of British Columbia puts on an annual barbeque just prior to the weekend of races. The Westwood Reunion Barbeque is held at the track on the Friday evening, and it allows Westwood veterans and fans alike to get together and share stories and memories of the now-extinct track. Another of the highlights of the weekend takes place on both Saturday and Sunday, as many of the classic and enthusiast machines from the aforementioned Field of Dreams lot take to the track at noon each day to give spectators a visual and aural thrill. Fans had plenty of opportunity to see their favourite racing machines in action on the quick Mission track as participants run qualifying heats prior to their races. The cars are grouped for the races based on a variety of parameters such as type of car, year of production, and overall performance capabilities. A variety of sedans, coupes and roadsters mix it up in the closed wheel classes, while open-wheel formula cars and exhibition models are featured in their own categories. This year’s Westwood Cup feature race was an open-wheel affair featuring the Formula Ford class, one of the most popular classifications of race cars in the world.
this year’s event relished the opportunity to see everything from classic muscle cars, Japanese sports and GT machines, and the best classic sports cars from Europe lap the track, while a handful of classic motorcycles were also on hand to add some flair.
The 50th Anniversary of the arrival of Japanese automobiles to our shores was part of the celebration, so a highlight for me included witnessing a trio of Datsun 510 models carving their way through the field of Porsches and BMWs as these spunky cars were a force on the Westwood circuit when I was a kid. I was also impressed by the racing prowess displayed by a variety of Volvo products, as the often clumsy looking early designs proved to be highly capable competition machines when piloted by veteran wheelmen and women.

Seeing a fine example of a Player’s GM Series Chevrolet Camaro and an old Frank Allers Reynard Toyota Atlantic car run in anger again reminded me of the heyday of Canadian auto racing when Imperial Tobacco financed pro level racing across North America. The family-friendly event takes on a festive atmosphere, as smiling car nuts circulate among the cars and racers, reliving memories and telling stories about old cars and past racing exploits. A small concession area of vendors and product displays allowed visitors to take a break from the action on the track and recharge their own batteries by getting shelter from the sun, or food in their bellies. If you are an automotive enthusiast and appreciate the sounds, smells and sights of old cars run in anger, then you will need to plan a visit to the British Columbia Historic Motor Races when they return to Mission in August 2015.

For every new car at L&S, there were several older ones, some of them part of a few anniversary celebrations. They included one hundred years of Maserati, 50 years of Mustang, and 50 years of GM Muscle Cars, and the latter included several cool GTOs from the mid-sixties. Story & photos by Gerry Frechette

he Luxury & Supercar Weekend in Vancouver has, in just a few short years, become the social event of the summer for the owners and admirers of expensive collector cars. Held once again in the verdant splendour of Van Dusen Gardens and in brilliant sunshine, the finest cars in Western Canada, from classics to muscle cars, exotics to customs, competed for numerous awards in the judged competition.
To no one’s surprise, the Best of Show award went to the exquisite 1933 Alfa Romeo 1750 6C GS, owned by noted local collector David Cohen. This car might be the most decorated local car ever, having won two major awards at two of the most important classic car shows in the world, Lake Como in Italy, and Pebble Beach, CA.

Two future classics that sell for over $1 million each were parked next to each other. The Pagani Huayra and McLaren P1 are two of the most sensational exotics ever, and drew big crowds all weekend.
The Area 27 exhibit featured the ‘Rivision’ custom Buick Riviera of J.F. Launier of Osoyoos. The trophy in front of the car is the Ridler Award from the Detroit Autorama, the top custom car award in the USA.
There were several pre-World War 1, brass-era cars on hand, all over 100 years old. The class-winning 1911 Chalmers is 100-percent original and complete, and has only 11,555 miles on the clock!
