t’s our favourite time of the year here at Performance Plus, as we attend the candy store of Iwhich the automotive aftermarket, the 2015 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show, goes November 3-6 at the Las Vegas Convention Centre. Since the first show back in 1967, it has seen continuous growth year over year, with attendance numbers reaching 125,000 in 2014, plus over 2,300 exhibiting companies filling over a million square feet of floor space. It truly is one of the yearly must-see automotive events, and having become veterans of the show over the last few years, we thought we’d help break down just what exactly you’ll find at each of the four halls, plus what goes on outside.

Contributing Writers / Photographers: Jordan Allan Cam Hutchins Russell Purcell Benjamin Yong

North Hall – Inside of the North Hall, you’ll find the Collision Repair & Refinish, Mobile Electronics & Technology, Restyling & Car Care Accessories, Tools & Equipment, plus the First-Time & Featured exhibitors related to those categories. Featured here will be painting equipment, the latest in car audio and video, eye-catching exterior products, and the newest tools and shop equipment.

Performance Plus Magazine is published six times per year by RPM Media Inc.

Central Hall – In what surely is the biggest hall at the show and is the ideal spot for you gearheads out there, you’ll find the Racing & Performance exhibitors, the Restoration Marketplace, and Hot Rod Alley. The Racing and Performance section will showcase the latest in all things fast, like superchargers and turbochargers to exhausts and headers. The Restoration Marketplace boasts vehicles dating as far back as the 20’s, and Hot Rod Alley features the latest creations and innovations from the Hot Rod industry.

Pick up your copy at your local Performance Shop or at the following participating locations:

South Hall Upper – The Upper South Hall at the show features the Trucks, SUV & Off-Road, Powersports & Utility Vehicle exhibitors, plus Business Services. The Truck section is another favourite of ours, as you can find just about any part or product to spruce your rig up, from tonneau covers and bed liners to suspension kits and sidebars. The Powersports section features all the newest products and services for motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides and scooters. South Hall Lower – The Lower South Hall is where you’ll find the Global Tire Expo, the Wheels & Accessories exhibitors, and maybe even a few models helping show off all of the new products. The Tire Industry Association (TIA) has teamed up with SEMA to provide this tire exhibition and conference that targets all segments of the tire industry. The Wheel section is filled with thousands of stylish wheels from every major manufacturer for cars, trucks and racing applications. Outside – Last but not least, the grounds around the convention centre have almost just as much to see as the inside, as here you’ll find thousands of vehicles showing off all of the products found at the booths inside, plus even more exhibitors. Additionally, the Ford Out Front section features drifting demonstrations, while the GM Proving Ground offers ride-alongs with precision drivers. Those of you who have been lucky enough to attend the show in years past know just how big it is, and for those who haven’t, we strongly suggest putting it at the top of your to-do list, as it truly is a gearhead’s dream, and the mecca of the automotive aftermarket.

BIG BOS The car boyhood dreams W

hen I was a young boy, I used to pass a bright orange 1970 Boss Mustang on my way to school each day. I was always a wise child, so I took the short route to school in the morning so I could sleep in, but in the afternoon I would take an extended route home just to catch a glimpse of the menacing looking muscle car that resided under a big oak tree a few blocks away from my house. I would ride my bicycle as fast as I could just in case the owner was getting ready to go to work. The speed of my bike was dictated by whether or not I heard the distinctive rumble of the car’s throaty exhaust. Recently a colleague mentioned that he has a friend who just so happened to own a 1970 Boss 302, which immediately piqued my interest as I still feel a strange longing for the bright orange Boss Mustang and its glorious V8 rumble.

Story and photos by Russell Purcell

SS 302 are made of!

When I arrived at the entrance to the large barn within which the car was being stored, I could feel my heart flutter and my excitement level rise in anticipation of getting reacquainted with the subject of a boyhood dream. While not an official numbers matching Boss 302, this special car is as close to an original as you will get for far less money. It is owned by Tom Dufour, an automotive restoration expert who operates Do-4-U Auto Body located in Mission, BC. Armed with a wealth of experience with muscle cars, Dufour used his talents to carefully craft the car using all original Boss parts, carefully sourced and prepared to recreate one of the most glorious road machines of the 1970s. The 302 engine that originally came with these cars had a power output of 290 horsepower and 290 pounds-feet of torque. It was mated to a Ford top-loader four-speed manual transmission with a Hurst T-handle shifter. However, this car has had its factory 302 replaced with a 351 Cleveland as the latter offered better performance. Â

The 1971 Boss 351Cleveland featured here has been revised to incorporate a bigger camshaft (625 lift, 292 duration) to boost output to 450 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of torque. This car runs a three-speed automatic. The 351 motor comes into its own at the top end, so when you stomp on the gas pedal, this car really delivers a visceral, and very exhilarating, driving experience. The torque band is wide enough to provide plenty of grunt at all reasonable engine speeds, so the Boss driver will feel confident that they will never be short of power. The Boss 302 is essentially a race car engineered for the street, so it should come as no surprise that cornering ability is this car’s strong point. In fact, the Boss 302 was designed to be the best handling Mustang of the period, and as such it really holds its balance through the curves. There is just a hint of understeer when you are carrying extra speed into the corners, but the transitions between these can be executed with confidence as the car’s nose goes where you point it, and there is very little body roll. The Boss 302 featured a number of revisions for 1970. These include a European-look front fascia, a new two headlight treatment, the addition of a front lip spoiler with a more rounded profile, and gill-like air scoops on the front corners of the car’s fender extensions. The rear of the car lost its concave shape and the taillights were now recessed into the flat black panel. One of the most recognizable styling cues on a Boss 302 is the “hockey stick” stripe package designed by Larry Shinoda, which are made of reflective tape. The ones affixed to this Grabber Orange example appear crisp and black, but when brushed by the beams of a headlight or a camera flash they transition to silver. In 1970, the majority of Boss 302 buyers ordered the optional “shaker” ram-air hood scoop which actively boosted performance by forcing cool air into the air cleaner housing. An over-sized fibreglass rear spoiler and window louvres were also available as optional accessories. The Boss 302 was only produced for a twoyear period. The idea was to use this special machine to build interest in the Ford brand, and the Mustang in particular. The car was born and bred to be a high-performance showpiece, and its dynamic handling characteristics and speed were honed and perfected on major tracks around North America as Ford campaigned the nimble pony cars in the SCCA’s Trans-Am Series. Dufour plans to give this car a full restoration and I hope I get to visit with it again once it is finished, as it is always a thrill to see iconic machines like the Boss 302 returned to their former glory.

otorsport fans living in the Pacific Northwest and beyond: start your engines and make your way to the brand new World of Speed (WOS) in Wilsonville, OR. About a 30-minute drive south of Portland, there you will find an 82,000 square-foot complex - fittingly situated at the site of a former massive Dodge dealership - dedicated to machines that go fast, whether they have wheels, rudders, wings or all of the above. “The World of Speed is a motorsport museum that’s designed to educate and celebrate motorsports, specifically aimed at teaching the next generation of kids automotive and mechanical skills,” says education director John Amschler. “So it’s a full-on shop program built inside of a motorsports museum that will cover everything from boats to land speed record cars to drag racing, sports cars, stock cars. We have something that will appeal to everyone here. Upon opening on April 24, Katie Schoen, vice president of boutique agency Lawrence Public Relations that is representing the WOS, says it is 12 Performance Plus Magazine OCT / NOV 2015

the brainchild of local Oregonian couple and businesspeople Sally and David Bany. “The founders have always had a passion for cars - they were high school sweethearts but their first date was at Sidewinders (former Portland motorcycle track),” says Schoen, adding passion soon turned into a hobby of collecting vehicles of all sorts. “People have told them, ‘You guys should start a museum,’ and so it started from that and evolved.” When you enter through the front doors at WOS, the size of the facility really makes an impression because much of the display area is in one giant room, as opposed to being sectioned off. Guests begin the tour underneath a racetrack-inspired “Start” banner and walk past a row of classic muscle cars and hot rods, like a restored 1965 Ford Shelby GT 350 with 3,000 original miles, accompanied by signage explaining their significance. The purpose of WOS is certainly to entertain, but Amschler points out the founders wanted to pass on interest and knowledge of the industry to youngsters, which is why many of the exhibits contain a hands-on component. been turned into a workspace complete with functional lifts and an assortment of tools. “We have three race car simulators that are built on real race cars, so these aren’t shells or video games. How often do you get a chance to sit in a Winston Cup car, much less drive it? This is the 1998 Johnny Benson car he drove in Winston Cup, and all the buttons and switches in it work. It’s a completely immersive experience. The next one over is Adrián Fernández’s ‘95 Indy Car and it drove out at PIR (Portland International Raceway). It drove in the Indianapolis 500 and it’s a real race car that’s been turned into a simulator. And as far as we know, these are one-of-a-kind,” he says.

Going into full educator mode for a second, the affable Amschler gives a bit of a history lesson as we stand in front of a recreation of the inside of a typical 1940s garage. Hanging from the ceiling is a model of the P-38 Lightning fighter plane made famous during World War II, and he says is what provided several styling cues for the 1948 Cadillac (think tailfins).

Make sure you don’t leave the museum without checking out one of its most visually arresting displays. In the corner are four NASCAR vehicles used in the Daytona 500 between 1974 and 2000, including Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Chevrolet Impala, suspended four-and-a-half metres above ground on a piece of replicated track matching the actual incline of the oval speedway.

-Install the new electric fan temperature switch. It’s an on/off thermal switch, so the fan begins to cycle when the temperature reaches 185F. When it cools down to 170F, it will cycle the fans off.

26 Performance Plus Magazine OCT / NOV 2015

-

STEP 5

STEP 6

-Maradyne recommends using an adjustable thermostat on all installations. The fan temperature switch must turn both on and off at a temperature above the control setting of the engine thermostat. Carbureted vehicles=160F water thermostat & 170F fan switch “off” setting, factory fuel injection=180F water thermostat & 185F fan switch “off” setting.

-Install the thermostat switch into the intake manifold. Use a thread seal on the threads (never use Teflon tape as it will electrically insulate the switch) and install it into the manifold. Now, all of the mechanical items have been installed.

STEP 7

-Get the electrical components out of the bags and review the diagrams provided. Maradyne makes this process simple. The end of each wire is labelled and where a connection to chassis ground must be made, a companion wire for that purpose will be labelled and taped to the harness.

28 Performance Plus Magazine OCT / NOV 2015

-

STEP 8

STEP 9

-Mount the relays, be sure to put them away from any heat such as on the side of the engine compartment. Connect the wire harness as shown in the wiring instructions. The two red wires with sealed fuse holders for the dual fans connect to the battery, the output terminal of the alternator, or an accessory “lug terminal” on the fuse panel, if one is available. Ensure any connection will sustain 20 amp per fan continuous current (40 amps for two fans).

-Connect the battery. -Ensure proper installation by disconnecting the temperature switch and touching the “temperature” wire to chassis ground. With the ignition switch “On,” the fans must turn on when this wire is grounded. With the ignition switch “Off,” the fans must not turn on when this wire is grounded. -If an adjustable fan temperature switch was used in the installation, you must now start the vehicle and set the switch. When the engine temperature reaches the desired engagement temperature, rotate the shaft of the switch until the fan engages.

Petty liked the ‘32, but back in 1974 he got a ‘48 Ford with finned flatheads. He eventually dropped a 300-horsepower small-block Chevy and Turbo 350 transmission with a Chevelle ten-bolt rear end. Doug Curran had sold him a kit to hang the tranny and rear end, along with a disc brake kit up front. In 1994, while sitting around the campfire in Shuswap, his friend introduced him to another car guy with the remark that now you have someone to talk to. Bantering back and forth about cars, it turned out this fellow had built a ‘46 Ford Coupe, and at the first big show he took it to in the States, he was offered crazy money for it and took a bus home. The other guy tells Petty about the “Barn Find” ‘32 Ford Tudor Sedan in Airdrie, Alberta, last licensed in 1953, and how some crazy old farmer finally decided to get rid of the car. Petty offered to trade his driver ‘48 straight across for the forlorn ‘32 Tudor. The guy thought about it but decided against it. Petty later got a call from a friend in the interior, Fergie, who told him some dude from Alberta was asking about Petty and his car and if it was any good. Petty wasted no time in making contact and making sure a trade happened. Part of the deal was to get the car put in his name and it was delivered to his home in Surrey. Being the second owner of a 1932 Ford Tudor Sedan is not something to be taken lightly. Even in 1994, the ‘32 Ford was becoming an icon in the Hot Rod world and as a member of the Pacific International Street Rod Association (PISRA), Petty knew he had to build this car the proper way. Sitting in his garage was an empty slate...ready to be transformed into whatever Petty could imagine...but also only what he could afford. He came up with an ingenious way to make money to finance his project car. Petty went to every swap meet he could find and bought only 1932 Ford parts. The popularity of 1932 Fords was increasing in leaps and bounds and so was that of the parts. Petty spent lots of time buying and selling ‘32 Ford parts using a Greyhound bus to ship massive fenders in old fridge boxes....the boxes cut up to barely fit under the buses in the luggage compartment. When enough cash and parts were stockpiled, serious disassembly of his ‘32 began. He could not believe how much “rust never sleeps” as the pretty solid floors of 1994 were now more like a cheese grater. Pin holes showed up after media blasting. Evidence of black fenders with a Washington blue body and Tacoma Cream pin stripes was found, but Petty had seen the colour of choice in 1994 when he first got the car...it was the bright “Speedway Blue” of the Toyota Tacoma pickup. Some things just make sense and with the help of Bill Townsend, the car was painted by Sandy Morita. The frame was taken apart with all rivets removed and a new front Model A cross member from Chassis Engineering as well as an X member was purchased. The Model A front cross member helps to lower the car. Ken Posie sold him the kit to hang the parallel leaf rear end that allows for a smooth ride. George Criddle had just finished his own ‘32 frame, so he put Petty’s on his jig and mounted the new pieces and boxed the frame. The front suspension is your typical four bar with a dropped axle. The springs had the eyes reversed on the shackles to lower the front of the car as much as possible. To clear the scrub line, 15-inch wheels were used, as were swap meet Plymouth Volare rotors and Chevelle calipers up front, with drums in the back. The rear end is out of a 1975 Mercury Comet with 3.55 gears to replace the original 3.07 that made it almost impossible to use the 5th gear on the Tremec out of a 1988 Mustang. Petty brought home the rolling chassis in 1998. Once the chassis was complete it was time to really decide what direction to go with the car. Picking the early American Graffiti ‘60s as the era, Petty imagined what would be the coolest rod in the high school parking lot circa 1963. Chopping the roof was too much for a high school kid but a slick white interior and an “Earl Schieb” paint job were in. Taking your wheels to the school shop and cutting out the centres and reversing them was also popular, so chrome reverse wheels were in, 15 inches up front and 17s out back. Wide Whites from Diamond Back Tires are mounted on each corner.

So following this style, the body was taken to Doug Rutherford Jr. who did the structural rebuild of the car and put in patch panels and floors, and squared the body. It then went to Jim Flett’s shop, and the head fabricator Russ Tortisshell handled the assembly and fit & finish of the car. The soft top was not going to be filled like so many modern hot rods, so Petty asked Vancouver Island ‘32 Ford Guru Al Clarke who handled his roofs, and was turned onto Dave Lukinuk of Davlin Upholstery. White was originally considered but this car was going to be driven and the white often yellowed and got dirty. The roof was done with original type material in Black and Petty looked at all the great interiors Lukinuk was doing and they started talking about what could be done. Being a true artist, Lukinuk drew up some ideas on paper based on Petty wanting a white interior with blue insert panels. The world is wide open when it comes to interiors for a ‘32, but Petty hit a home run when he found the interior trim for a 1959 Chrysler Saratoga two-door sedan on eBay. A New Yorker named Neil Gobbi scrounges old trim pieces and sells them online. He gave Petty the measurements and it seemed right so he plunked down $60 and had the trim shipped to him. Only needing a couple of dings removed and a quick polishing, the trim looked great but did not quite fit. After further fiddling, the trim was then swapped side-to-side and flipped upside down, and it fits perfectly. Lukinuk also added the great blue carpeting and inserted a pattern of holes to allow the hidden speakers to work well. Petty has a Secret Audio deck mounted under the rear seat controlled by a remote control. Parts were sourced from all over, including California and Honest Charlie’s Speed Shop in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The car has many period-correct pieces, either originals or knockoffs, including a ‘40s style steering column and ‘36 Ford Banjo wheel from Limeworks in CA, an Auburn-style dash insert out of So-Cal Speed, and Classic White Hot Gauges. The heater is another swap meet part found in Portland for $20.00 that had just the right art deco appeal for this build. The engine is a ‘94 5.0-litre that has been dressed 32 Performance Plus Magazine OCT / NOV 2015

down to look old school. Fuel injection was removed and a pair of finned valve covers and Holley 600 carb finish the look. Claire Henderson worked his magic under the dash and wired the car front to back. It was painted and towed to PISRA’s 40th Anniversary Run at Langley Speedway where it sat on borrowed wheels without an interior. One sharp-eyed spectator asked how he drove it without pedals. The car was completed in December of 2013 and has been featured everywhere including the ICBC and Snap-on Calendars, a couple of magazines and as far south as the Portland Roadster show where it took third place in the Sedan class. All ‘60s show cars had names, and for this one, Petty chose “The Tiki Dream.” The blue paint, the Pan-Am themed seat belts, Tiki shifter and the large Tiki pinstriped on the rear of the car add to the Polynesian theme. Now, after almost 20 years without a Hot Rod to drive, Petty is once again rekindling his youth by giving young chicks rides in his ‘32 Sedan... but this time, they happen to be his granddaughters!

All-New MSD Atomic AirForce Intake Manifold for LS7

Hotchkis has recently released its Stage 2 Extreme TVS Sport Suspension kits for a plethora of GM B-Body cars such as the Chevy Monte Carlo, Malibu, and El Camino, the Buick Regal, and the Pontiac LeMans and Grand Prix with small block engines. The kit includes tubular upper and lower control arms, heavy duty tie rod sleeves, sway bars, lowering springs, adjustable upper trailing arms, lower trailing arms, and all necessary hardware. The kit has been designed on the track but is comfortable enough for local cruising. The kit provides a one-inch drop from the original factory ride height.

The brand-new MSD Atomic AirForce intake manifold for the GM LS7 engines deliver improved airflow and distribution to improve the performance of both stock and modified engines. It features a unique bell-mouthed runner entrance that help maximize airflow and minimize shrouding, while optimizing the available plenum volume for an unobstructed flow path over opposing runners. A polymer molded two-piece design allows for easy access to the runners for porting. The Atomic AirForce accepts an OEM or 103mm throttle body plus stock or aftermarket fuel rails. It bolts on and comes complete with new gaskets and hardware for installation.
