Dart Releases Aluminum LS Next Engine Block Nearly one year after releasing the cast iron LS Next engine block, Dart Machinery has unveiled its aluminum counterpart. At a weight of 107 lb (49 kg), the LS Next aluminum block is made from the finest casting materials and addresses many high-performance troubles found in OE LS power units. Firstly, it corrects internal oil leaks and introduces a stepped bore to maintain oil pressure in the main galley. Cascade vans, Calgary, AB. work is refreshing in today’s cookie-cutter world: the more unique and different, the better. And with a glut of awards (they’ve actually received, on average, between four or five awards per show, since 1996!) attesting to their skill and aptitude for this sort of work, it should come as no surprise, then, that Cascade’s work is known well beyond their home city of Calgary’s limits. (This publication alone has featured their work on a few occasions!) And although we’ve come to know them for their wild paint choices matched only in insanity by their interiors (how many ‘30s Fords have you seen with Ostrich hide upholstery?!), it goes without saying that Cascade can handle slightly less extreme jobs with aplomb. After all, if you can stitch and skin a custom seat with the hide of a flightless bird, stretching a repro seat cover over a seat bun hardly seems difficult. Likewise, should your old convertible need a little TLC, they’re more than happy to provide that, as well.
A
long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, vans were cool. The year was 1974; Watergate had just come to light, People magazine saw its first issue hot on the newsstands, and a dazed and confused Japanese soldier finally surrendered Lubang Island to its Filipino owners after spending 29 years denying the conclusion of World War II. And vans were cool. And rightfully so! They were big, powerful, did good burnouts and Mr. T eventually ended up behind the wheel of one, so their cachet is undeniable. But their real draw was their interiors. Infinitely customizable, they could be fitted with everything from infamous shag carpeting all the way up to full camper conversions with sleeping areas, tables, and the works. It’s in this market that Cascade Vans and Interiors was born.
Obviously, as with any field that allows some room for personalization, it’s impossible to pin down any sort of exact price for their services, and Dale does maintain that either the vehicle itself or pictures thereof are the best way to get an accurate estimate. However, ignoring the various variables (like material), when pressed, Dale did spit out a few surprising figures for us, like this one: $1,600 - his ballpark figure for an out-of-the-box convertible replacement for your generic droptop muscle car. We were astounded (and slightly depressed), having spent countless hours wrestling our own soft-top kits into submission only to discover our subsequent rise in blood pressure was all for a savings of a few odd dollars. Should you require a custom-made soft top, Dale puts that figure around the $5,000 mark; a figure that’s largely dependent on the materials chosen. Almost as surprising were his quotes for interior work, with a complete restoration costing roughly $7,500 (which included everything from carpets and seat covers to door panels and windlaces). Not terribly surprising on its own, that figure is made more impressive when compared to Dale’s opening bid for custom work: $3,000. Apparently it’s true! While some interiors may run upwards of $60K, Dale assures us that, thanks to oftentimes easier installations, custom interiors can in fact be cheaper than stock!

aurie Peterson of Canadian Customs and Hot Rods has had a dream career for a Carnut. Starting off as a mechanic for a Cadillac dealership, he drag raced very successfully a Studebaker Champion, and eventually opened a repair shop with a partner. He also was into building and repairing custom cars and hot rods on
so it came off very easily. One of the most radical modifications was the chopped roof....it is not even off a ‘54 Buick. The look of the 1957 Buick and Oldsmobile roof appeals to Peterson more than the 1954 roof. It turns out, in 1957, Buicks and Oldsmobiles had identical rooflines, and an Oldsmobile donated its roof for the project. The three-piece back window and roof were cut off a car in Vancouver, Washington at the “American Classics” wrecking yard. The roof is chopped three inches in the front and three-and-a-half inches off the back. The portholes on the front fender were moved below the stainless trim and the fender vent was repositioned. Headlights from a 1957 Lincoln and taillights from a 1950 Chrysler are nice custom touches. A more radical feature is the rear quarters, lengthened four inches to give the car a longer lower look. The hood had its corners rounded and the all emblems and handles are shaved. Caddy wire wheel replicas complete the “50s Custom” look and only a few small pieces and the rear bumper were rechromed, as the rest was in great shape. All the stainless was polished.

The name and logo for his new business was based on an old Canada Custom sign his Dad had found. Canada Customs and Hot Rods was born. He had just finished an amazing 1954 Chevy Bel Air and was looking for a project for himself. He wanted something different, but big enough for the family and reliable enough to go places. In 2008, looking online for a 1954 Buick Special led Peterson to Vancouver Island where there was one for sale. The car had probably been restored at some point in its life, and it was a nice clean runner. Stripping the car to bare metal, there was only one very small part of rust and the paint had not adhered properly, 28 Performance Plus Feb / mar 2014

The Buick had the interior done in a subtle black-and-grey cloth to match the black paint, and she was ready to drive. Peterson took the car to the “Westcoast Kustoms Cruisin National Meet” in Santa Maria, California and drove the car there with its original drivetrain. Although it was fully custom on the outside, its running gear was totally stock...except for Fatman drop spindles up front to lower it. The 264 cu. in. overhead valve V8, complete with Dynaflow transmission and the enclosed drivetrain, cruised down the highway like a champ and the car was named Best Wild Custom and Best Use of Wire Wheels...and he was up against the likes of John d’Agostino After driving it for three or four years, a Super Wildcat 425 out of a ‘65 Riviera was found and mated to a TH400 transmission with modern driveshaft and ten-bolt GM diff. To further improve ride and handling, NASCAR trailing arms bought brand new from South Carolina were added. Not one to leave too much alone, a dual-quad carb setup with chrome air cleaners was found on eBay. A lot of power, considering the car

has the stock factory power steering and brakes, but it was built for cruising, not racing. Now the car was perfect...but it did not get driven too much in 2013, as Peterson had found two new loves in the summer of 2012. One was a nice little stock-looking Austin Healey 100-4, ice blue with wire wheels, but a Ford small block and T10 transmission give it a bit more oomph! He also bought a 2001 NASCAR Busch Series car and set about converting it to road course racing spec. It was a PJ Jones, Yellow Freight race car, and ended up in L.A. with a
stunt guy who has a fleet of cars for the movies. It was in “The Love Bug” with Lindsay Lohan, painted up as the Home Depot car, and possibly also “Talladega Nights.” To compete on the local road courses, the car needed high-caster spindles, different matched coil springs, not stagger springs, and a rear sway bar. Peterson also changed the upper control arms and anti-dive adjustments, along with freshening the motor.

In 2013, he was getting his full race licence and during his last required race, he broke a roller lifter and then the valves got bent in practice. Scrambling to find a new motor to swap out at the track, an old friend from high school that Laurie had not seen until starting road racing came to his rescue. Craig Johnson offered his Datsun 240 Z race car to Peterson, so he could finish qualifying for his licence in 2013.

The long low Buick Special is a far cry from what Detroit put out, but the subtle nature of the modifications make it look like it should have come from the factory this way. On our first trip to Bonneville, someone burst out of a motorhome to tell us Gene Winfield had just spun 13 times at over 200 mph. No t the top of the list of car events one must attend, Bonneville one was hurt so it was kind of cool to track down Gene in the pits to Speedweek is in a class all its own. To start with, let me men- talk with him afterwards. From the Starting point to the Pits is a bit tion free parking. That is right - free parking....right near the event, of a drive but you can wander through the pits and look at the cars too. No shuttle buses or 6:00am arrivals. You head off the highway a few miles East of Wendover, Utah and head North until the “Bend in the Road” and then head East...and there you are, at the Salt. The entrance to all this magic is going to set you back about $15 per day and that gets you front row seats to the action...as long as you bring your own chairs.

At night, the cool cars are all over downtown Wendover. During the day, the action is on the Salt...or should I say, inaction. Anyone used to drag racing had better just simmer down a notch as the quartermile just grew by 40 times and cars do not run down the course until the other car is safely off it. The starting line is a casual deal with the hot contenders running the long course and the smaller vehicles typically on the short course. The spectators line up perpendicularly from the starting point, and make sure you stand near someone with a CB radio so you can keep up with the action, as that is the only PA system on the salt.

The drive to Bonneville from Vancouver is about as long as the drive to Edmonton....but with fewer Albertans. But there are lots of Canadians competing on the Salt. The town closest to the Salt Flats where the Bonneville Speedweek takes place is called Wendover and strangely enough, it is located on the border with East Wendover being in Utah and West Wendover being in Nevada. first weekend, since many teams arrive, race and break and then head out, leaving rooms available. To be safe, book ahead of time. Head south of Vancouver to Seattle and then take I- 90 East towards Spokane, then I-82 to Yakima and work your way to Twin Falls and head south. You could go for another couple of hours and stay at Jackpot in Nevada before getting up the next morning and driving to the Salt. The trip is 1,500 km and takes about 14 hours of driving. Once in Wendover, you should make time to visit the Airport and its little museum highlighting the Enola Gay Bomber that trained out of Wendover during WW II. old aircraft and marvel at the original barracks that housed the airmen and crew back in the day. Also in Wendover, hot rods are everywhere. Most of the hotels have a few parked outside of them and during the early evenings, the streets are plugged with salt-covered machines cruising up and down the strip in some vague homage to American Graffiti but where the cops are all younger than the juvenile delinquents driving the hot rods. On the Salt, the hot rods are there as well and they look so picturesque with the stark salt and mountains in the background. I was lucky to talk with many enthusiasts and get them to move their cars a few yards away to take amazing shots. One Vancouver guy, Bert Straiton with an old Henry J with a Ford SHO mill in her, allowed me to take a picture of him holding an old broken 45 record. Years ago when Straiton was there, an old timer gave him a 45 record. Straiton asked “what is this?” and the old timer said...”now you are a Record Holder at Bonneville.” Since then, the record is always kept in the door pocket of his Henry J...and you guessed it, after it got cracked, he has now “broken a record” at Bonneville.
Not all the cars are there to break the sound barrier. Depending on the car and motor, almost any car can set a record at a pretty modest speed considering that now, all the big three in Detroit make cars capable of 160 mph or more. One old Buick run by Jeff Brock of Rocket Heads Racing with body modifications more fitting a postapocalypse sci-fi movie was running a straight 8 and managed to hit 165.735 mph. It was an “XO GCC,” meaning it was a “Competition Coupe or Sedan” and must have a chopped roof and other modifications, and the XO designation consists of inline engines with flatheads or overhead valves, flathead V8s except Ford or Mercury, and V12 passenger car engines of designs prior to 1959. This class of engines is typical of what ran at the Southern California Dry Lakes in the ‘40s and ‘50s. On the first day of runs, local boys “Original Fast Guys II” ran a top speed of 241.918 mph at the Mile 2 point and then slowed down by 10 mph at the Mile 3 point. Later in the week, they hit 271.041 mph. They were running a Lakester GL body/chassis with a C engine (306 thru 372 cu. in.) Continued on Page 43

Streamliners run in classes called BFS, FS, BGS, GS or DS with at least two wheels covered and a minimum of four wheels....but the wheels do not need to be in a rectangle. Lakesters cannot cover the wheels with any aerodynamics and front air dams cannot be wider than the inner vertical plane of the narrowest set of tires. Lakesters come in BFL, FL, BGL and GL with minimum wheelbases from 110 to 180 inches depending on the engines used. The alphabet soup you are required to learn to figure out the competition means any dyslexics should take up short track dirt ovals. Another B.C. boy, Roger Manson with his polished Jeep powered by an early â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;60s Pontiac 4-cylinder, turned out (meaning leaving the course before going the distance). It seems one of the connecting rods wanted a better view of the action and put a window in the side of the block. But Roger has another four blocks ready to go...and he has gone through 50 of them in his racing days.

Forget the math...just figure out how to get the time off and go to Bonneville.

Upcoming Events Calgary World of Wheels n February 21, 22, and 23, the BMO Centre at Stampede Park in Calgary, Alberta will host the 48th running of the World of Wheels Show. Featured at this year’s show is the Jim Leslie Award Competition, WOW “Battle of the Techs” engine building competition, Vi n t a g e A l l e y, Live Music from Brokensmoke, pinup girl contest, a muscle car shootout and tons more. A few celebrities will be attending the show such as WWE Superstar Sheamus on Friday from 6-8 pm, WWE Superstar Chris Jericho on Saturday from 12-3 pm, and “American Pickers” Danielle Colby Cushman. Also worth checking out will be the Freestyle Motocross Stunt show which runs at different times throughout the three-day event, and the Diesel Powerplant Performance Corner presented by Diesel Performance Specialist. Admission to the show will cost $16 for the general public, $5 for children aged 6-12 and children under 5 get in for free.

Portland Roadster Show The 58th annual running of the Portland Roadster Show will take place on March 1416 at the Portland Expo C e n t e r i n Portland, Oregon. This year’s show will be once again put on by the Multnomah Hot Rod Council as well as Portland Roadster Show organizers. Featured guests at the show will include legendary car builder George Barris, who is best known for designing and building the original Batmobile, car builder John D’Agostino, and six Miss America contestants. The 2014 edition of the show will see the addition of the Kustom Kulture Hall which will be located in Hall-C of the Expo Center and will feature pre-1964 traditional hot rods and custom cars, motorcycles, bicycles, music and more. Over 400 rods, customs and bikes are expected to be at the show. Admission is $15 to the general public, and kids 12 years old and under get in for free. Winnipeg World of Wheels The 40th annual Piston Rings World of Wheels show will run from March 14-16 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre in Winnipeg, MB. This year’s show is certainly not lacking in star power as featured on the Pony Corral Restaurant & Bar celebrity stage will be Danielle Colby Cushman from “American Pickers” on Friday from 6-
10 pm, WWE Superstar Shawn Michaels on Saturday from 12-3 pm, and Canada’s own WWE Superstar Chris Jericho on Sunday from 12-3 pm. In order to celebrate the 40th anniversary, show organizers have wrangled a number of vehicles featured in Hollywood movies, such as the Fast and Furious Charger, Mad Max Interceptor, Green Hornet Black Beauty, Knight Rider Kitt, and the Back to the Future Delorean. Some other notable features are Gene Winfield’s Chop Shop demonstrations, Miss World of Wheels pageant, and Drag City Canada featuring vintage dragsters. Admission to the show costs $14.00 (plus $1.50 fee) for general admission, $5.00 for children 6-12, and free for children under 5. Draggins Rod & Custom Car Club Car Show The 54th annual Draggins Rod & Custom Car Club Car Show runs on Friday April 18th and Saturday April 19th at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, SK. This show is the longest-running club-operated car show currently in Canada, the first one being held in 1967 with a total of 1,500 visitors and around 30 cars to look at. Since then, it has grown to over 300 vehicles, with the attendance numbers hitting near the 20,000 mark at the 50th show in 2010. Over $10,000 in trophies and cash are up for grabs in the judged competitive event where exhibitors compete in various classes and years with categories such as best paint, best engine compartment, best interior and best engineered up for grabs. Another staple of the show is the popular “Battle of the Automotive Technicians” which features two teams attempting to assemble a V8 engine in the shortest amount of time. ‘The Fonz’ is Coming to Canada! It’s showtime again! Get ready for ‘Cars, Stars & Guitars!’ when the 18th annual B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show rolls into the Abbotsford Tradex Centre for three great days of motorsport action Friday April 18 to Sunday April 20, 2014. The big news for 2014 is the confirmation that ‘The Fonz’ is coming to Canada and will appear at this year’s event. As part of the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the hit 1970’s TV show ‘Happy Days,’ Henry Winkler’s attendance is sure to please many local hot rod and custom motorcycle enthusiasts. Joining ‘The Fonz’ are returning custom car legends George Barris and Gene Winfield along with ‘Voodoo Larry’, one of America’s top ‘retro’ customizers, who will make his first appearance at the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show this year.
