Bringing Back Dean Bicknell’s 1973 AMC Javelin A

ldergrove, B.C. resident Dean Bicknell may not be trained as a mechanic, but the 46-year old likes to tinker, and uses the time in the garage to hang out with friends and members of his family.

Bicknell has always been an auto enthusiast and has owned a number of interesting cars over the years. “My first car was a 1974 AMC Javelin that I purchased at the age of 17,” said Bicknell with a proud grin. “I collected a lot of speeding tickets in that car. Unfortunately, it was an almost weekly thing!” In true teenager fashion, Dean tortured that poor car with a mix of haphazard modifications and a tendency towards aggressive driving. As a result, that first car was soon headed to the recycler, but not before it stole a place in Dean’s heart.

k Memories Now a well-established businessman, Bicknell has the time and resources to enjoy the car hobby and rekindle some memories. A couple of years ago, Bicknell’s brother Dave spotted a Javelin for sale on Craigslist, and quickly alerted Dean as he thought it might be worth a look. Bicknell has owned quite a few muscle cars over the years, but he really wanted to build a Javelin because he had such fond memories of the tired model he tortured as a teenager, and you don’t see them every day, like Mustangs and Camaros. However, second-generation Javelins are quite rare as they were only produced for a period of four years (1971 to 1974), and as AMC wasn’t that large a company, they didn’t make a lot of them during that period.

“The car was tucked away in an underground parking facility in Tsawassen, but was originally from New Westminster,” said Bicknell. “The seller was asking $1,000, but I managed to acquire it for $800 along with a ton of extra parts. Almost two trailer loads in fact.” Luckily, Bicknell operates Sunnyside Self-Storage, a family business, so he knows a little about storing large quantities of stuff. The car was solid and purchased for a song, so Bicknell decided to sit on the project for a few months to come up with a plan for the build, or to even determine if it was something he wanted to tackle. “Because I got such a good deal on the car I was also well aware of the fact that I could always make a tidy profit by just selling the parts if I lost interest.” Bicknell admits that while far from perfect, his current Javelin is in pretty good shape for a driver, the real reason he bought the car in the first place. “I spent a lot of time at the auto wrecker when

I was a teen looking for replacement parts for my first Javelin after usually breaking something the night before. That car wasn’t loaded like this one and only had the 304-cubic-inch motor, but it was a lot of fun! It had lots of Bondo in the rear quarters, and was largely falling apart on its own, but after five years of ownership and the trauma that comes along with teenage driving habits I eventually had to part it out.” There have been some minor modifications to the engine, as he has his mind set on a particular performance goal, but he doesn’t want to stray too far from the originality of the car under the hood. The car has the original 360 cubic-inch, four-barrel V8 engine, but in his quest to maximize performance, it currently has an aluminum intake fitted and has been converted to high compression. On the dyno, the car is producing 360-horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque.

“I have a set of headers that I may install just to try them out for a season or two, as I want to take this car to the track in Mission and see if I can get the car to run in the 13-second range for the quarter mile. I saw 99 miles per hour at the track one day, but would really like to hit triple digits.” The goal has always been to restore the car to how it was when it left the factory, so the plan is to return it to original spec after the budding speed merchant reaches his speed goal at the track and has some fun with the car. Luckily, he has all the parts in hand to return the Javelin to the same specifications it was when it was delivered to its original owner.

“I think that we disassembled every nut and bolt on that car, and all the wear and tear parts have been replaced and everything was carefully inspected. For the most part, only original or NOS parts were used on the car. The only thing that is not AMC is the transmission, as the company sourced the three-speed automatics from Chrysler.”

Dean is happy with how the car turned out, but will continue to improve on it as he stumbles upon various parts and pieces. “I have no intention of ever selling this car,” said Bicknell with a wide smile, “as just seeing it in the garage brings back great memories for me. Resurrecting the Javelin took me two years, but it also allowed me to spend some valuable time with my brother Dave (who helped out tremendously with Bicknell’s car has only 102,000 miles on the odometer as it sat for almost the project), and that is worth more to me than the few dollars I may 20 years. The car runs strong and is largely shake and rattle free as the get for the car should I offer it up for sale. Hagerty’s Driving Experience Enters Fifth Season Hagerty is proudly entering its fifth season of the Hagerty Driving Experience, which is a program that has put more than 600 students in the driver’s seat to teach them how to drive vehicles with a manual transmission. The program allows young drivers, ages 15-25, to learn the craft while sitting behind the wheel of some very exciting classic cars. Participants are able to learn the ins and outs of starting, operating and driving a wide variety of cars from instructors and classic car owners themselves. In addition to the actual hands-on driving, students also take part in a classroom discussion that outlines how a clutch and manual transmission operate, as well as another seminar to learn the basics of vehicle maintenance. The morning and afternoon half-day sessions run about three hours and are limited to around 20 students.
