When Dodge first released details about the upcoming 2015 Challenger, we were told the SRT model with the 6.2L Hemi Hellcat engine would produce somewhere north of 600 horsepower. We, like most of the automotive world, were shocked to learn that not only would it exceed 600 horsepower, it would produce enough to lay claim to the title of the most powerful muscle car ever with a whopping 707 horsepower. The Hellcat engine is the first factory supercharged Hemi and will be Dodge and SRT’s first application of V8 supercharger technology. As the Boss 302 Mustang did before it, the car will come with two different key fobs - one black and one red. The red fob is the one that unlocks the car’s true 707 horsepower and torque potential while the black one limits you to a much more tame 500 horsepower. On top of sheer power, the new 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat features a new TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-new interior inspired by the classic 1971 Challenger; all at a starting cost of $63,995. Audi to Bring Apple CarPlay to New Models by 2016 Audi will begin offering Apple CarPlay, which is a smarter and safer way to use an iPhone in the car, in its vehicles starting in Europe next year and in North American markets by 2016. CarPlay will help integrate Audi’s built-in controls such as the Audi MMI touch system as well as dial and voice controls to easily activate SIRI. This allows Audi drivers to safely access their iPhone to make calls, check Maps, listen to music, or send and Publishing Schedule: RPM is published 6 times per year by RPM Media Inc. The Z06’s LT4 supercharged 6.2L V8 engine also produces 650 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. This engine features terrific low-end torque producing a whopping 457 lb-ft of torque just off idle and 625 lb-ft at only 2,800 rpm. It is able to maintain 90 percent of its peak torque (592 lb-ft) from 2,500-5,400 rpm. The LT4 is based on the same Gen 5 small block foundation as the Corvette Stingray LT1 6.2L naturally aspirated engine but incorporates several unique features designed to support its higher output. These features include lightweight titanium intake valves, Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads, a high compression ratio, and forged aluminum pistons with a unique, stronger structure just to name a few. A new 1.7L supercharger spins at up to 20,000 rpm which is 5,000 rpm more than the supercharger on the Corvette ZR1’s engine. This new engine will be paired to a standard 7-speed manual transmission or an all-new, paddle-shift 8-speed automatic transmission which is designed to deliver shift responses that are on par with the world’s best dualclutch transmissions. Highway Speed Limits Finally Being Raised Some residents of British Columbia will be pleased to find out that the province is raising speed limits on select highways to 120 km/h. The new limits will take effect in early July and include highways such as the Coquihalla between Hope and Kamloops, the Okanagan Connector from just outside Merritt to Peachland, and a section of the Island Highway between Parksville and Campbell River. A review of rural highway safety led the government to raise speed limits on certain divided, multilane highways from 110 km/h

It now features redesigned, sportier front and rear fascias, HID headlamps, LED signature lighting, and 18-inch rado gray alloy wheels with red painted calipers. Little is known about the powertrain range as the show car boasted a 210-horsepower 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission putting power to the front wheels. A wider range of powertrains are expected and many hope an all-wheel drive system would also become available which would certainly enhance its off-road capabilities. Although there are no official plans yet to bring the car to North America, we would find it somewhat cruel for VW to showcase the debut of the concept on our shores and not even offer it here.

There is only one person that comes to my mind who is building a supercar today that is his personal vision, the perfect fusion of artistic design and mechanical engineering. I’m referring to Horatio Pagani, who has been building cars bearing his name since 1993. Pagani moved to Italy in 1983 and found employment on the team at Lamborghini, working on the LM002, otherwise known as the “Rambo Lambo,” and later helping to develop the Countach, which would be the first car in the world to have a carbon fibre chassis. to his friend Pagani that he should approach Mercedes, and Fangio most likely did some behind the scenes lobbying himself. Today, the AMG M158 V12 engine is the only engine specifically supplied and coded to an outside supplier. The bespoke engine produced just for Pagani is modified to reduce turbo lag, and offers improved response. This is achieved through new exhaust headers, new pistons, a new intake manifold, as well as specially designed turbochargers that make the 2,950-pound car handle more like a normally aspirated car than a neck-snapping twin-turbo. Pagani could not have picked a better V12 engine to fit into his cars; Mercedes is the world’s largest manufacturer of V12 engines and makes a very fine product. The Huayra’s 6.0-litre, 60-degree V12 produces 720 bhp and 740 lb-ft of torque, giving it a top speed of about 235 mph (376 km/h). f you are a person who appreciates fashion and style, then securing the keys to a vehicle like a Mercedes-Benz E-Series Coupé should be high on your to do list. Coupés feature curvaceous bodywork, sexy lines, and superior aerodynamics. Unfortunately, all this curb appeal comes at a cost, as these sporty two-door machines lose some practicality when it comes to carrying passengers. The reality is that if carrying passengers is your priority, then buy a sedan. Coupé designs are perfect for singles and empty nesters. Interestingly, what coupés give up in rear passenger room they make up for in the cockpit, as these designs tend to offer both the driver and front passenger more room to stretch out in than a similar sized sedan. This is because the doors have been extended to enable access to the rear seating area, and extra long seat rails have been fitted to move the front seats out of the way when loading passengers.

that there is a rear bias to the 4Matic all-wheel drive system to preserve the balanced feel one enjoys in a rear-wheel drive automobile. While not a rocket, acceleration is still pretty impressive as the engine has a rather wide torque band. As a result, runs from 0-100 kilometres-per-hour can be executed in a mere 5.5 seconds. The car rides firmly but I still found it comfortable enough for longer commutes. Steering is communicative, as it is lightly assisted and speed dependent. The test car benefited from the Sport brake upgrade that comes as part of the optional AMG Sport Package, and these big, ventilated discs proved predictable and fade free during the course of testing. The Mercedes-Benz E350 4Matic Coupé would be an excellent vehicle for the image conscious individual looking to impress his or her friends and peers, but without breaking the bank. Add to this superior German build quality, luxurious appointments, and a dynamic driving experience and it becomes apparent that this sultry coupé is worth a long, lustful look.

The 2014 E 350 Coupé has a distinctive profile as it features a pillarless side window treatment, and the car sits low to the ground. The standard AMG appearance package includes an aggressive front spoiler, side sills and a rear valance, all of which help the E Coupé stand out from the crowd. Advanced LED lighting units are used front and rear, illuminating the four corners in elongated housings that represent the latest trend in automotive styling. 16 RPM Aug / Sept 2014

Power The 2014 BMW M235i Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

P

ossibly no automobile today needs more explanation than this latest BMW, the new M235i. The 2-Series is the latest generation small coupe (but not sedan), replacing the 1-Series coupe. The ‘35’ designates the presence of the 3.0-litre turbo straight-six. And then there is that 13th letter of the alphabet that enthusiasts have come to love, the big M.

horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, which, in this relatively light (1,590 kilograms) car delivers scintillating speed. With six-speed manual (as our tester was equipped), BMW claims 0-to-100 km/h runs in the very-low five-second range. The eight-speed automatic with launch control is a couple of ticks quicker. The car features M-specific chassis tuning which, for Canada, includes standard M Adaptive suspension, M Sport Braking system (with 13.4-inch ventilated front rotors and four-piston fixed calipers), variable sport steering and Michelin Pilot Super Sports tires, in 18inch size, with 19s optional. Even the exhaust system has been specifically tuned for the M235i. The DSC stability control system includes an electronic locking function for the rear differential; a mechanical limited-slip differential is available, oddly as a dealerinstalled accessory. Inside the M235i, there is nothing that strays far from the traditional simple-but-stylish BMW interior design. It is much nicer than the old 1-Series, and except for a bit of space, especially in the rear seat, it could be a 4-Series. The car comes equipped with leather seats, and iDrive is standard. Like all BMWs these days, one can control the feel of the car via the Driving Experience Control rocker switch on the console. Flick it into Sport and its character changes into “let’s drive faster” mode, as the controls (steering, throttle) and chassis (suspension) take on a keen edge. And then there is Sport+.....

There are several options groups available for order, of course, that included on our tester such niceties as connectivity, sunroof, navigation, satellite radio and Harman-Kardon audio, and these pushed the base price of $45,000 up to $53,745. 2014 VW Jetta GLI Edition 30 Story by Jordan Allan, photos by Gerry Frechette

I knew very well what to expect getting behind the wheel of the GLI Edition 30, as I have experienced a few GLI’s and GTI’s in the past, but there is still a wow factor when I first let loose on the throttle. The power figures of 210 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque are much lower than it actually feels, and the DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with manual mode only furthers that notion by providing lightning-quick shifts that allow you to burn through each gear with ease. One thing that had slipped my mind regarding the GLI/GTI family was the growly, aggressive exhaust note that is produced, which is a huge plus in my books. Another aspect of the GLI that cannot be ignored is the incredible sport-tuned suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars that is able to handle tough corners with ease, no matter the speed travelling. It is able to provide a stiff, immediate steering response that no other car in its class even comes close to, which leaves

The GLI has been a staple of the VW lineup ever since, and for the model year 2014, the German automaker has decided to honour its popular sporty sedan by offering a special GLI Edition 30 to mark the occasion. Chevrolet Volt vs Cadillac ELR Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

Y

For the uninitiated EV crowd, the Volt is an extended-range plugin vehicle with a lithium ion battery, an electric motor, a smaller double duty motor/generator, and an onboard gasoline engine. Whereas the gas engine does occasionally transfer some power to the wheels, its primary function is to drive the generator to produce electricity to propel the car.

ou might think that the newly-released Cadillac ELR is nothing more than an expensive wolf dressed in Chevrolet Volt’s clothing. And in some regards, you would be right. After driving each, however, there are definitely unique features to both of the plug-in hybrids that help differentiate themselves for different markets. The question is, are those differences enough to help GM justify the ELR’s MSRP of With a fully-charged battery (which takes about four hours via a 240volt power source), drivers can expect a range of 40 to 80 kilometres $78,250, a premium of $40,000-plus over the Volt? on pure EV mode dependant on factors including terrain, driving style and ambient temperature. I averaged somewhere around Similarities: 63 km in mostly flat city conditions with the occasional highway • Utilize the GM Voltec platform, centred around a 16.5-kilowatt hour lithium ion battery and electric trip. With the aid of the gasoline engine, total range is bumped up to roughly 615 kilometres. motor (111 kilowatt in the Volt, 135 kw in ELR) • Pure electric range: up to 61 kilometres (Volt) vs. 56 (ELR) • Alternately powered by a 1.4-litre Ecotec four-cylin der gasoline engine that kicks in to replenish energy when the battery is depleted • Seats four passengers • Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with seven- inch screen vs. Cadillac CUE infotainment system with eight-inch screen

Differences:

• Five-door hatchback (Volt) vs. two-door coupe (ELR) • Horsepower: 149 (Volt) vs. 207 (ELR) • Full driving range with gasoline assistance: up to 615 km (Volt) vs. 480 (ELR) • Fit and finish: The Volt has a much more practical appeal while the ELR sports LED headlamps, hidden door handles, carbon fibre interior trim, leather seating and surfaces • Addition of regenerative braking paddles behind steering wheel of the ELR

To achieve greater efficiency, engineers spent a lot of time on the vehicle’s aerodynamics, like making the front fascia rounded and flush to mitigate air resistance. You might notice that the Volt and Chevrolet Cruze share aesthetic qualities, which they do. Both utilize the same underpinnings, although the roof on the Volt is several inches lower and the rear window aggressively raked back to cut down on turbulence. Chevrolet Volt Entering its fourth year of production, the folks at General Motors have slashed prices and as a result the Chevrolet Volt costs $36,895, There is no doubt that Chevy’s green automobile has a polarizing $5,000 cheaper than the 2013 model - a move that is sure to convert design. Its silhouette is that of a half sedan/half wagon, but I think the front end looks attractive and the liftgate’s mostly glass construction a new crop of electric enthusiasts. 22 RPM Aug / Sept 2014

instance the small metal garnishes in the middle of each seat, a nice touch. Like other models within the brand, information and media are displayed and controlled with the CUE system that relies on touch controls. Successful receipt of a touch command is rewarded with vibrating haptic feedback that in my experience can be a very hit-ormiss situation. There are ways to skirt around completely relying on pressing the screen with your fingers, like using the steering wheel audio switches or talking to an OnStar agent to help with navigation input. Less focus is placed on geeky green tech here — rather than screaming eco, it feels more like a really nice car that just happens to be partially electric. gives a cool see-through perspective from the front seat, reminiscent of the second-generation Honda CR-X. The centre console in the front cabin extends all the way to the back, meaning there is only seating for four adults. You won’t find any traditional dials or gauges anywhere, as all the information is displayed via one of the screens located either directly in front of the driver or in the centre stack. Trying to adopt optimal driving habits becomes a bit of a game: an eco-globe next to the speedometer floats up or down depending on how hard you accelerate or brake. Keeping it in the middle means you’re using as little electricity as possible, and is a task more challenging than it might sound. I found myself drastically altering the way I pull away at a green light, or even leaving more distance between myself and the car in front so I could recoup more energy through regenerative braking by slowly coming to a stop rather than jamming on the brakes at the last minute. If you need help, pressing the leaf button on the dash will bring up helpful tips on how to be more efficient. Cadillac ELR Unlike the Volt, price might not be a big selling point for the brand new Cadillac ELR. The luxury, however, definitely is. Where the looks of the Volt might be polarizing, the coupe has a low and sleek profile with sharp clean lines and a slightly menacing demeanour.

A similar powertrain is found in both vehicles, but the electric motor has been tweaked in the ELR to up the output 135 kw, translating to a net 207 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. That’s an improvement of 58 hp and 22 lb-ft compared to the Volt, which is no small number even taking into account that it weighs 131 kilograms more. The extra grunt is apparent, and can be managed through one of four different modes such as the default Tour setting, Sport, Mountain,

The two are fairly close in size, the ELR being about 226 millimetres longer in length and 59 mm wider. The visual likeness ends there because the two vehicles are completely different animals. Attention to fine detailing is much more apparent on the Cadillac that boasts vertically-stacked LEDs in the headlamp housing, flashy 20-inch blade-style wheels (with specially engineered low-rolling-resistance

and a Hold mode that forces the car to use its gas-powered generator so you can save the battery charge during energy-hungry highway trips. A fantastic invention is that of two small regenerative paddles hiding behind the steering wheel, where paddle shifters normally reside. Pressing on it activates a brake-energy-recoup function that siphons the kinetic energy from slowing down back into the battery. There was no evithis category. The all-new V60 line of sportwagons is comprised of dence of turbo lag, and the well-sorted Haldex all-wheel drive system helped the car grip and go without hesitation. This car handles with such precision, that it is easy to forget that you are behind the wheel of a station wagon. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that the chassis of the V60 R has been lowered 15 millimetres when compared with the Dynamic chassis in the standard V60, and spring stiffness has been increased by 15 percent. A strut brace ties together the suspension strut towers to stiffen the body structure. The car tracks straight and true, and seems able to hold a line better than many sports cars I have driven. The V60R’s suspension employs advanced monotube shocks and stiffer bushings, so the car’s ride is quite firm. Enthusiast drivers will appreciate this as it enhances their ability to communicate with the car through the seat of their pants. The V60 wagons derive their architecture and chassis from the three models, all of which feature all-wheel drive. Asymmetric Tread Design Designed for Superior Wet and Dry Performance

Volvo’s new designs embrace curves and aerodynamics. The wide grille, stretched headlights and shapely hood form a striking face similar to that of the S60, but distinctive enough to set it apart from its competitors and siblings. The wedge shape of these new wagons is somewhat exaggerated by the gradual downward slope of the roof line and the use of angled rear windows.

The Volvo V60R’s passenger cabin has been designed to maximize interior space and offer optimal levels of comfort. The R Design front seats proved both supportive and comfortable, and the combination of leather and Nubuck suede material gives the car’s interior a little extra style. Instrumentation comes in the form of an Adaptive Digital TFT Display cluster which features three distinct themes and is very easy to read. All controls and switchgear are easy to reach from the driver’s position, and the overall layout and design of the controls is simple enough to promote intuitive use.

The rear seating area offers more headroom and legroom than the S60 sedan, and it proved more than comfortable enough for three average sized adults to ride in comfort. Cargo space is in abundance and the rear seats fold to accommodate larger items. The Volvo V60 R is an excellent alternative to a sport utility vehicle as it features all-wheel drive and loads of utility in a convenient-sized package.

Summer Driving

Michelin Promotes Using The Right Tires in the Summer Story and photos by Benjamin Yong magine this — it’s the dead of summer, temperatures are hitting record highs, and you’re ready to hit the beach. Instead of reaching for a pair of flip-flops or slip-ons, you pull a pair of furry boots over your feet. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Yet people do the exact same thing with their cars — and risk a lot more than just comfort — by driving around all year with tires designed for winter climates.

afternoon, and the difference was surprising. Whereas I was sliding around the corners with the X-Ice, the Primacys allowed me to turn sharply and confidently. Under hard braking at the end, the latter stopped within a significantly shorter distance. “A lot of people think ‘Well, it’s a round black rubber section that just touches the road,’” says Nadeau. “The reality is it’s not meant for that. The [winter] tire literally disintegrates and on top of that, the sidewall of the winter tire is not as strong as the all season or summer tire.” “So what we’ve seen with the Primacy is that the initial driving input you’re doing to start the corner, the tire reacts right away,

This issue was one of the reasons Michelin Canada decided to host a recent summer safe driving event, highlighting the safety benefits of choosing the right equipment. Instructor and race car driver Carl Nadeau explained why it is important to switch to all-season or summer tires in warmer weather. “I always compare tires to footwear. Like, you get boots in the winter, and then you get running shoes and then sandals. Of course the running shoe can be a real good all-around shoe, so it’s the same for tires. A winter tire is great in the winter — the rubber compound stays soft, but that softness of rubber doesn’t cope with summer,” says Nadeau. The ability to stay soft and flexible is great for digging into snow and gaining traction, but that translates into a wobbly tire that actually takes longer to grip into pavement and come to a complete stop. To demonstrate, I took two Toyota Camrys —one fitted with Michelin’s Primacy summers and another with X-Ice winters — spiritedly around a tight parking lot slalom on a warm spring 26 RPM Aug / Sept 2014

while the winter tire is more lazy. So when you turn you feel like the sidewall is moving, you feel the tread itself moving under the car and then the car finally starts changing.” Nadeau added that every second a driver loses in the vehicle’s reaction time could make all the difference in an emergency situation. As a final word, Nadeau says “The message we want to send to people is whatever you have on your car — if it’s winter tires, please just change them to all-seasons or summers.”

But there are still cars that follow the time-tested measures of performance that have been established over years of driving flat-out over everything but highways and urban streets. By this, we mean rallying, of course, and the performance that might count the most in this demanding environment is traction and handling, pure and simple. At this, Subaru has excelled for decades, as the small Japanese manufacturer has honed its famous all-wheel drive systems into its most identifiable feature. Some 20 years ago, Subaru launched the first STI version of its compact Impreza sedan, and now, the latest generation of the WRX STI has been

Subaru’s thought was that this engine is strong and a proven performer, with lots of aftermarket support, so it would continue to do the job in the STI. That it does. It doesn’t have crazy power, but it is plenty to be entertaining, and manageable on broken surfaces. Zero-to-100 km/h is in the five-second range. Also as before, the power heads out through a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission (no automatic is available) into one of the most sophisticated drivetrains on any car in the world, thanks to the Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD). Also on board the STI is the Subaru SI-Drive system, that allows you to choose from three settings that vary the engine control module and the throttle response from Intelligent to Sport to Sport Sharp, plus Active Torque Vectoring, which can apply brake pressure to the inside front wheel to facilitate more neutral cornering. All these systems make the STI a performance car for the serious enthusiast, but as we’ll discuss later, there is one more variable we’d like to see. Given the STI is based on the all-new Impreza, it benefits from all the improvements that model gets. First off, the platform is much stiffer than before, with torsional rigidity increased by some 40 percent, a very significant improvement. With this to work with, the engineers were able to specify larger, stronger suspension components than the last generation, and that combined with the surgically-sharp steering and variable driveline make for an apex hunter of the first order. But it is really a jarring ride over even small road irregularities, in normal urban-type driving. With all the electro-gear in the driveline, perhaps Subaru might

The Sport ($40,495) adds the spoiler, LED lights, power seats and sunroof, and the Sport-tech ($44,995) goes all the way with the BBS wheels, leather seats, navigation, and a big audio system. Unfortunately, the STI is no longer available as a hatchback. As a performance car, the STI can run with any car when the going gets twisty and/or off-pavement, and holds its head up in a straight line given its power output is towards the low end in these days of 400 horsepower being sort of a baseline amount in most line-ups. As an everyday car, a compact sedan that might even do double duty as a family car, the STI has a couple of fairly major idiosyncrasies to make mention of.

like to consider some variable suspension damping technology to give the occupants of the STI a bit of a break from the constant pounding. Most performance cars offer this.

In any case, the new STI is certainly high performance, done the unique Subaru way. Those who have driven and enjoyed an STI before will really love this one. But it demands compromises. Great Value 2014 Dodge Dart GT

Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

ith the recent rejigging of Chrysler’s brand strategy, Dodge is to become what many considered it to be anyway, the sports and performance lineup, with SRT incorporated under that umbrella. The enthusiast will have much to lust after at the high end of it, but down at the entry level, the Dart compact has already received performance upgrades, in the form of the GT model.

likely more durable) cloth seats, but the look is high end. So to, is the level of equipment, led by the Uconnect infotainment system that has been a big success in any Chrysler vehicle it has been installed in. The screen is big, and the design of the system is intuitive enough that the driver can easily work through the menu to get what he/she is looking for. Plus, there is a big TFT screen in the middle of the instruments for all the vehicle info, so the tech savvy will be happy with the Dart GT.

Just like almost 50 years ago, the first order of business in making a Dart into a GT was installing a bigger engine. The 2.4-litre Fiatsourced ‘Multiair 2 Tigershark’ pumps out 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed manual transmission to the front wheels, making for a flexible powertrain in real-world driving situations like around town, and highway merging. Its relatively large displacement for a four makes for some un-smoothness at times, especially when cold and/or idling, but once it is put to work, the engine moves the Dart with authority, and the zero-to-100 km/h run can be done in around the 8-second range. With sport suspension (verrry firm) and steering (quick, direct, the heaviest-feeling in its class), plus 225/40 R18 tires, the rest of the mechanicals can handle the speed, and the GT is a sporty drive. The shifter, with a shiny metal-look knob, would be nicer to use with a leather knob, and its long travel and notchy engagement, combined with the clutch pedal’s long throw, take some getting used to, to drive smoothly.

The space for large North American bodies is good upfront for what is essentially an Italian car, although adults might wish for more legroom in the rear. Still, the occupant environment is upscale for a compact.

Driving the Dart GT will get you noticed if you have specified one of the bright colours available; our tester was a regular sort of red Inside the Dart GT, Dodge has created a compact sporty luxury car, that suits the car and accented the quite rakish overall proportions, beginning with lots of soft-touch surfaces and the Nappa leather- but minus a lot of the busy character lines so many other compacts upholstered seats. So, the Dart GT is a good value in the sporty compact segment, wellequipped especially on the high-tech side, attractive inside and out, and with good power from its large four-cylinder engine. But it just doesn’t seem to be fully realized when it comes to mechanical refinement, which leaves more room for the Dodge (and Fiat) engineers to improve it. Maybe the rumoured R/T model with turbo engine will go all the way to compete with the established stars in the segment.

True Off-Road Jeep Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde

Chrysler Canada’s long-running dispute with GM Canada came to an end as this model came into production (GM owned the Canadian rights to the Wrangler name and Chrysler was arguing that GM could not use the seven-slot grill on the Hummer as it was Jeep branding) allowing this Jeep platform to finally use the Wrangler name like it does in the USA.

street drivability, which is choppy at best. True off-roaders fear this may result in reduced off-road performance, which the Wrangler platform excels at above any current offering in the marketplace. I, however, am looking forward to the change if it takes place, and I am a diehard off-road guy who prefers Jeeps as my transportation mode once off pavement. No doubt, it will generate a host of new products, as the aftermarket comes to grips with a radical new model and works to enhance whatever it is Jeep comes up with. And lets face it, the Wrangler all by itself generates more aftermarket product support than any other single brand in the market from the serious off-road suppliers to companies outfitting vehicles for backwoods campers and explorers. Now we come to this 2014 edition which Jeep labels the Polar Edition. Basically, the Polar Edition is a Wrangler Unlimited Sahara with colour-keyed

The interior is much improved over the early 07-2010 Wranglers, with easy-to-reach controls, nice large-screen navigation unit, curved dash design and easy-to-read gauges.

The introduction of the JK Wrangler was also the first time a four-door model was introduced on this platform. In the past, there were “stretched” versions including the CJ6, CJ8 and most recently the TJ Unlimited which ran from 2003-2006 – but never a true four-door model. Jump ahead to 2014 and the four-door Wrangler out-sells the two-door version by substantial numbers, and all indications are pointing to a new model in 2018 which will make for a 12 year run for this platform which features live solid axles, front and rear.

hardtop and fender flares with Polar-specific badging and interior accents, along with Polar-specific wheels, and a package of optional equipment to keep you warm and happy inside your Jeep come winter.

Like all Wranglers, the Jeep is now powered by a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and comes with either a six-speed standard or the optional five-speed automatic. The 3.6 is rated at 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and has enough power to move it around, but nothing to get you overly excited. This new-for-2011 combination provided smoother shifts, better Within the industry, all indications at this point are suggesting an indepen- power and better fuel economy than the previous 3.8-litre engine. What it is – is the best off-roader currently on the market with amazing aftermarket support to turn it into almost anything reflecting your personality and the destination you want to reach. Stepping it up Stage 2

For Stage 2, we are going to look at a vehicle that desperately needs an audio upgrade from the factory – worse so, given its price point. The focus for this system will be the 2011-2013 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. I know this vehicle well – I happen to own a 2013 model. The factory audio system is embarrassing; there were, quite simply, mistakes made in the way it was designed. We will fix that in Stage 2.

The Impreza has factory steering wheel audio controls, so we have included a steering wheel control interface and have allotted installation time to install and configure it. The navigation system in the Pioneer unit is of obvious benefit – giving you turn-by-turn instructions to help you get to your destination quickly and easily. This serves to allow your speakers to work to their highest potential, and to reduce external noise from entering the vehicle – making it easier to hear your music clearly. All connections should be soldered and taped or protected with heat shrink tubing. This will cost you a bit more in materials, but makes the system just that much more reliable. We have also allotted time in these systems for your installer to set them up carefully. When it comes to time alignment configuration and system equalization, that is a ‘by ear’ trial-and-error procedure, and it can’t be rushed. Don’t skimp on tuning; it’s a great investment in the overall sound quality of your system and is worth every penny. Many customers state that they hear new instruments, new voices and a heightened level of detail – the plucking of strings on a guitar or the movement of valves on a saxophone for example. You can start to pick out the placement of instruments in a well-recorded performance. You can see the performers set up in front of you. Even with digitally created music, you will be able to hear definition in each note, from the lowest bass frequencies to the highest treble. The music will have more impact – giving you a sense of realism. Kick drums will be felt with speed. The upper end system is good enough to start competing with. Find a local IASCA (www.iasca.com) Sound Quality event and enter. It doesn’t cost very much, and you can learn a great deal about music and your audio system from a qualified and trained judge. Some minor adjustments by your installer afterwards could result in a major improvement to the overall performance. Award-Winning Riviera J.F. Launier’s 1964 Buick Riviera was the recepient of the 2014 Ridler Award

Story and photos by Cam Hutchins

A

rguably, the ‘60s got kicked into overdrive with the introduction of the Buick Riviera, a personal luxury car designed by the legendary Bill Mitchell. Based on a full-sized model, the two-door coupe was one of the most iconic designs ever and threw Detroit’s design departments into a frenzy. Now it has taken what the Detroit Autorama’s Ridler Awards used to expect from contenders and created the same frenzy!

improve its look, but still remain a Buick Riviera. Most changes are subtle but some are wild. The front wheel arches are moved three inches forward, and hand-built louvres behind the front wheels resemble a Corvette’s, but are bigger and more brash. Rear quarter panels are hand built and the rear of the car is widened 5.5 inches to give it the

Starting with a 1964 Riviera and adding the flowing rear window of a later version, JF Launier, owner of JF Kustoms in Osoyoos, has taken Mitchell’s design to a whole new level. Keeping true to the overall design of the car but tweaking every bit of it is tricky to get right, and the Ridler Award is proof he got it very “right” indeed. Like most new customs, modern running gear allows it to often out perform many new exotic supercars, but with a totally unique personality. The overall look is so perfect that even the next generation “Boattail” rear window looks like a factory design. The original Riviera was designed to give GM a car that had a taste of Rolls Royce with the performance of a Ferrari. As Launier’s fourth attempt to win the Detroit Autorama’s Ridler Award, this is the first time it is with his own car and not customers’ cars. The Riviera dubbed “Rivision” was in a league of bulky sports car look. Hand fabricating the trunk and back secits own. Out of the 2014 Great 8 contenders, four were Chevys tion of the car gives a modern take on the classic Riviera that is completely changed, but still has the look of the Riviera. and three were Ford hot rods. Knowing the ‘64’s roof had a sedate look, Launier added the early ‘70s Riviera Boattail rear window. Mating it to the ‘64 adds a flow to the roofline that is exactly what was needed back in ‘63. So similar in looks to the Corvette, one can only speculate if it would have been a split-window for 1963 like the Corvette’s. The whole body of the Rivision has been hand-fabricated to 44 RPM Aug / Sept 2014

To make sure everyone knows this is not some trailer queen show car a pro touring-type of car, a functional lower air dam juts out purposely, and various scoops and holes in the bodywork appear for form and function. A high centre-mounted gas cap is similar to the C2 Corvettes and the exhaust leaves the car high up between the taillights similar to...the Space Shuttle?

It is a modern work of art and as such, has every advantage available on modern cars. Twin turbos are mounted in the back of the car along with the intercooling system. The pressurized air is then fed through a tube to the front-mounted engine...but the tubes go through the passenger compartment, adding a completely wicked sounds, states Launier. Although it won the Ridler award as a show car, this car is going to be driven, because it was built to be driven hard and raced. The chassis is a one-off custom perimeter frame allowing the body to sit very low. The car’s Nailhead Buick mill has been replaced by an 850-hp 6.2-litre GM LS-family V8, and early reports of the car being mid-engined are false - probably brought on by the rear-mounted turbos and intercooler seen through the rear window. The transmission is a Tremec T-56 Magnum double-overdrive 6-speed transmission, and the driveshaft shares its tunnel with the hot exhaust heading back to the turbos. This allows the whole underside to be flat to facilitate the planned 200-mph runs, and eightpiston SSBC discs on the front and six-piston discs on the rear make sure it can stop from the warp speeds. Speedtech provided the front suspension, and the Ford 9-inch rearend is a homage to traditional hot rods but with a custom-built triangulated 4-bar set up.

Although I am stoked about the great shots I took, I got to actually sit in the car and

The interior is fully skinned in leather and the hot exhaust gas is channelled under the floor and up through a large duct through the ceramic coated header and polished stainless exhaust system to the turbos. The cooler-pressurized air flows through beautiful powdercoated ducting above the passengers heads. Some wonder what was going through Launier’s head...but it works! Competing for the Ridler does not come cheap. Many of the cars are multi-million dollar builds done in commercial shops and paid for by an owner with very deep pockets. The Rivision, by comparison, was a budget build, using $300,000 in parts and materials and 20,000 hours spent over the last three years while Launier was still running a car customizing business. go for a ride. Yes it is a show car, but every surface in the car is built to be used and not wear out, and once you crawl over Launier gives lots of credit to the suppliers that gave him lots the roll cage assembly, the leather seats are perfectly suited of great equipment to work with, and the large group of friends to long drives.

RIDDLER AWARD

T

he Ridler Award is presented each year at the Detroit Autorama and has come to signify the vehicle that best conforms to new ideas, changing designs and concepts. It is named for the talented promoter Don Ridler who helped the Autorama get going in the 1950s. The Ridler Award is only for cars first shown publicly; it has gone on to be one of the most prestigious awards in the Hot Rodding world, and has only been won by Canadians a few times. Of the debuting cars at Autorama, 38 were scrutinized and eight were picked to be the Pirelli Tire Great 8. They are meticulously judged and getting to this level is an honour on its own. 48 RPM Aug / Sept 2014

might have seemed a bit of an exaggeration at the time, but it turned out to be true, with well over 150 Vignale models being built. Only one Rolls-Royce was ever built by Vignale. This custom-built one-off example was ordered by Joseph Maschuch of New York. A 1954 long-wheelbase Silver Wraith chassis was sent to the Alfredo Vignale Coachworks in Italy and was finished in the spring of 1955. There were many unique special features ordered by Maschuch; the engine block, cylinder head, generator, starter motor, air cleaner, carburetor, and inlet manifold were specifically ordered in a green paint finish.

The Success of Ferrari Sales in North America Doomed this Simple and Ingenious Design Story by Nigel Matthews

M

ost serious Ferrari enthusiasts interested in the earlier models will recognize the term NART (North American Racing Team).

During the 1960s, Luigi Chinetti was the Ferrari distributor for the United States and made a good living selling his used Ferrari racing cars to wealthy Americans. His Ferraris attracted some of the best drivers in the country; they were extremely fast, lightweight sports cars that claimed numerous victories and were responsible for Chinetti’s flourishing business. Luigi Chinetti Jr. began working on his own exciting project in 1969, one that would certainly have some financial risk. His plan was to offer the existing Chinetti clientele a luxurious and sophisticated, high-performance, four-seat bespoke automobile at a reasonable cost. The design was simple and rather ingenious. It would require relocating the front-wheel-drive engine and sub-frame from the Cadillac Eldorado into a body constructed in Italy by the famous coach building firm Zagato. The result was a 400-horsepower, 500-cubic-inch, mid-engined car with four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. The lightweight body combined with a large engine offered neck-snapping performance and acceleration. The prototype car was displayed on the Zagato stand at the Turin auto show in 1971 and again a few months later on the Chinetti stand at the New York Auto Show. The reverse rear window is reminiscent of the one used in the Ferrari Dino

However, the sale of Ferrari products took off for Chinetti and Junior’s project was shelved. Only one of these cars was built and sold, and the original owner decided to sell it a while ago at an auction in California for $68,835.
