he AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) Canadian Car of the Year category winners were announced recently with Porsche, Subaru, Hyundai, and Mercedes being the big winners as each manufacturer saw two of their vehicles crowned in their respective categories. The Porsche 911 Turbo S was named the Best New Prestige/Performance Car and the Porsche Macan S was chosen as the Best New SUV/CUV over $60,000. Subaru’s winners were the Legacy 2.5i being crowned the Best New Family Car under $30,000 and the Outback 2.5i winning the Best New SUV/CUV under $35,000 category. Hyundai saw its Sonata win Best New Family Car over $30,000 and the Genesis taking the Best New Luxury Car over $50,000 crown. Finally, the Mercedes C-Class was decided to be the Best New Luxury Car under $50,000 and the Mercedes S-Class was named the Best New Prestige Car. Rounding out the rest of the category winners were Kia, Honda, Volkswagen, BMW, Volvo, Toyota and Ford. All 15 category winners are now in the running to be named the AJAC Canadian Car or Utility of the Year which will be announced at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto in February. For the complete list of winners, check out www.ajac.ca. Cadillac to Add High-Resolution Streaming Video to Enhance Driver Vision and Safety Sometime in the later part of this year, Cadillac will add high-resolution streaming video to the function of a traditional rearview mirror, which will remove obstructions that often get in the driver’s view, such as passengers, head restraints, the roof, and the rear pillars. This provides a field of vision that is an estimated 300 percent greater than a standard mirror. A high dynamic range allows the camera’s video feed to reduce glare and allows for a crisp, clean image in low-light situations. The in-mirror display is an industry-leading 1280x240 pixel TFT-LCD display with 171 pixels per inch and a hi-def camera Publishing Schedule: RPM is published 6 times per year by RPM Media Inc. Mazda6 Diesel Engine Delayed Once Again, This Time Due to Performance Issues Mazda first announced its plans to put a four-cylinder diesel engine into the Mazda6 sedan way back at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show, and still to this day, we are waiting to see that come to fruition. An Automotive News report states that the engine (aptly named the Skyactiv-D) has once again been delayed, this time due to the fact that the performance aspects aren’t quite where they want
them to be. According to Automotive News, the initial plan was for the 2.2-litre engine to be so clean, it could get by without an after-treatment system, which is a huge factor for the increase in price of diesel cars versus their gas counterparts. This new system has experienced performance issues, though, thus extending the delay. As of right now, there is no time frame of when we might be able to see the new engine. Volkswagen Golf R Touch Concept Displayed for First Time at CES in Vegas Volkswagen recently debuted its Golf R Touch Concept vehicle for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The vehicle features an infotainment system that incorporates gesture control as the next step in controlling your vehicle’s amenities, as a simple hand gesture in front of the infotainment display is only needed, rather than actually touching it. Despite the complexity and number of functions, the vehicle was created to reduce driver distractions while maximizing personalization and intuitive operation of the car. Nearly all controls are implemented via touchscreens and sensor switches. The Golf R Touch is equipped with three screens - a 12.8-inch infotainment system touchscreen, a Control Centre 8-inch arranged beneath it to control climate and media functions, and a 12.3-inch Active Information display which are the digitalized instruments. Originally, the Veyron’s production was supposed to see only 300 examples, but it was extended to another 150 after the introduction of the Grand Sport roadster in 2008. An Autoblog report states that 442 of the 450 supercars have been sold, meaning there are just eight more examples left to be sold. Production of the Veyron coupes came to a halt in September 2011, but production of the Grand Sport and Vitesse roadsters have continued and will do so until the final eight units have found a home. It would take Bugatti about two months to produce those final cars once orders are placed. The big question will now be, once the Veyrons are all sold out, what will Bugatti have in store next?

2015 Porsche 911 Targa Story and photos by Russell Purcell

the Targa 4S benefits from a more powerful 3.8-litre unit that is good for 400 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.
he Porsche 911 has been in continuous production for over half a century, and during this period, it has evolved to represent the Acceleration runs to 100 kilometres-per-hour can be clicked off in perfect pairing of performance and practicality among the world’s a mere 5.2-seconds in a Targa 4 fitted with the short-throw manual gearbox, and a 5-seconds flat in one blessed with Porsche’s PDK automatic. The more powerful Targa 4S will achieve this performance measure in a quick 4.8-seconds when equipped with a manual, and 4.6 with the PDK. The sound of the engine and its free-flowing exhaust is pure aural bliss and best appreciated with the top retracted. While tooling around in a convertible can be a really pleasurable experience, the inherent weakness of drop-top automobiles is that they tend to exhibit chassis flex, as without the fixed roof structure, the body and frame lose much of their strength and integrity. To combat this malady, Porsche engineers have created a clever design that incorporates an aluminum-finished centre hoop (a design nod to the original cars, at least in a visual sense), a separate curved glass rear window unit, and a cloth-covered magnesium roof panel. The
sports cars. It is a vehicle that can be driven daily on the road, but come the weekend, it is perfectly suited to tackle a track event. There are currently 19 models of the 911 available for model year 2015 (eight of which are cabriolets), with the most recent addition being two versions of the reborn 911 Targa. The Targa, like all its brethren, features a horizontally-opposed sixcylinder engine and your choice of a 7-speed manual or 7-speed PDK automatic transmission. There will be two models on offer, the Targa 4 and the Targa 4S, and both cars come standard with all-wheel drive. The Targa4 has a 3.4-litre engine which produces 350 horsepower and 287 lb-ft of torque. For those buyers looking for a little more zip, 12 RPM Feb / Mar 2015
The retractable hardtop is stowed away in a small compartment situated immediately above the engine compartment. Apparently, this design managed to save Porsche a substantial sum of money, which has been passed on to the consumer in the form of a lower price. With the top retracted, there is surprisingly little wind turbulence in the passenger cabin, as the Targa design seems to do an excellent job of directing airflow away from the car’s occupants, at least at normal (legal) operating speeds. The Targa’s handling is superb, as Porsche has had 50 years to dial the 911 in, and feedback from the electromechanical steering and the seat of your pants help you maintain and appreciate the car’s inherent balance and precision.
centre hoop actively stiffens the car’s body structure, but also acts as a roll bar to provide some protection to occupants in the event of a roll-over. The Targa’s top is completely power operated, and the impressive piece of engineering can be retracted in about 19 seconds. However, it is necessary to point out that the car must be stationary to operate the roof mechanism, unlike the setup used in 911 Cabriolet models which can be operated at speeds up to 50 kilometres-per-hour. Apparently the support arms of the Targa’s roof structure are not strong enough to guarantee stability, and thus, proper operation, at similar speeds.
While the Targa is only half as stiff as a 911 Coupe, the engineering team was careful to bless the Targa with a higher level of chassis rigidity than that of a Cabriolet model. As a result, the Targa possesses the exceptional handling dynamics one expects from a modern 911, and in fact, feels almost as poised as the fixed-roof car. Barely a squeak or rattle was detected during the seven-day test period, even when the car rolled over road irregularities or train tracks. That is impressive! To further minimize the impact of cowl shake on the driving experience, Porsche fits a slightly softer suspension to the Targa and Cabriolet models that employs a specially designed shock absorber that features a dedicated rebound spring that will firm up the ride as suspension travel increases. This is a clever engineering trick and it works very well.
RPM Feb / Mar 2015 13
It is great to see the 911 Targa back on the Porsche menu, as the car represents the perfect compromise for those buyers struggling with deciding between the Coupe or a Cabriolet. The practicality of
Innovative technologies abound in the ever expanding Porsche catalogue, and both Targa models come standard with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), a clever innovation which enhances handling when cornering to allow the 911 driver to explore the true dynamic capabilities of these finely tuned machines. Our test unit was equipped with Porsche’s Sport Chrono Package ($2,110) which sharpens the car’s throttle response, steering, suspension and brakes. The company’s optional ($2,390) and very trick Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system was also fitted to our test vehicle. PASM is an electronic damping control system which actively and continuously regulates damping forces according to driving style and road conditions. In addition, the suspension is lowered by 10 mm on PASM equipped cars. The driver can select from two modes using a separate button on the centre console: ‘Normal’, which is a blend of performance and comfort, and ‘Sport’ where the setup is much firmer. It should also be noted that the Targa is heavier than both its Cabriolet (+40 kg) and Coupe (+110 kg) stable-mates, but the extra weight does not interfere with the overall driving experience.

Rolls-Royce, realizing that there will always be a market for cars that inspire some degree of driving passion, set out to develop a two-door version of the Ghost sedan. But rather than just make a conservative hardtop with squarish roof, as in the past, caution was thrown to wind, so to speak, and the Wraith sports a full fastback roofline above the otherwise traditional R-R body design. This startling contrast in style, all in one vehicle, certainly garners attention from proletariat onlookers, and sets this Roller apart from all but the Phantom DHC (convertible, if you must), as the sedans do their best to be a bit understated for such large, portentous vehicles. Inside, through the two reverse-hinged coach doors that must weigh a couple of hundred pounds each, there is little to distinguish the Wraith from the Ghost, apart from the lower roof and compromised rear vision. The interior of the tester was slathered in an off-white leather that was sinfully smooth, and contrasted with the dark wood and piano black trim. The seats themselves are more like big firm thrones. Chevrolet Bolt Concept No, I’m not talking about the redesigned Volt that also made its debut at NAIAS, but this is Bolt with a B. As in, the concept car that is fully electric, has a range of approximately 300 km and is expected to start at $30,000. Designed for long-range driving in Canada, the U.S. and other global markets, technology is a key driver of this little EV. Infiniti Q60 Concept The Q60 sedan has been long overdue for a reimagining, and Infiniti teased showgoers with a new two-door concept coupe. Sleek and silver, this two-plus-two seater has at its heart one of Infiniti’s next-gen smaller and more potent powerplants slated for production within the next couple of years: a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 (see a recurring theme here?) Like other current products, features like the signature exaggerated mesh grill and Direct Adaptive Steering are all there, and the company is introducing Infiniti Intuition, a customizable digital cabin environment that can be set differently for up to four drivers using specialized keys.
Bentley Mulsanne Speed No top 10 list is complete without something completely decadent, like the American debut of the 2015 Bentley Mulsanne Speed. Everything about this luxury liner is big: the reengineered powertrain, a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V8; the horsepower, 530; the torque, 811 lb-ft (!). For a car of this mag-
nitude, it still only takes 4.8 seconds to reach 100 km/h and tops out at 305 km/h. Thanks to increased efficiency, drivers can expect an extra 80 kilometres of range to a tank, although I’m going to guess that prospective buyers aren’t too concerned about fuel costs. 20 RPM Feb / Mar 2015

Carried over is the excellent DOHC 5.0-litre engine debuted a few years ago, and it has been tweaked to now pump out 435 horsepower, nearly as much as the 2012 Boss 302 had. Needless to say, the GT so-equipped is a seriously fast and capable beast, as that power is all very usable, and the car can be enjoyed nearer its limits than similar cars with another couple of hundred ponies. Nevertheless, Ford will introduce the Shelby GT350 with 500+ of them this year, as the horsepower wars continue unabated.

For the Mustang enthusiast who doesn’t need that much power, and wants the style without the added costs, there are two other choices. The standard engine remains the 3.7-litre 300-hp DOHC V6, like the V8, available with six-speeds manual or automatic. We drove an automatic, and for the base powertrain, we were quite impressed with its flexibility and capability. It felt especially lively off the line, with ample low-end torque, and the transmission shifted crisply via So, imagine the challenge Ford had in developing a new generation of the Mustang. The last version, introduced for 2005, was a success on many levels, and was a “retro” design, harkening back to the 1967 model. So, the new model couldn’t be as overtly retro, but had to still look the part and respect its ancestors. It had to push all the right buttons with the Mustang enthusiast, in terms of style and performance. It had to be a thoroughly modern car technologically. It also had to fit into the current environment of safety, efficiency, emissions and worldwide appeal that all new cars have to. Not a small task, right? But the new Mustang checks all those boxes, and then some. Looking at the new car, there is no doubt that it is a Mustang, with the big grille, twin three-bar taillights, and fastback roofline, but the 22 RPM Feb / Mar 2015

The rear suspension is now independent, which will certainly eliminate the solid-axle gyrations encountered when the pavement gets uneven in a corner taken near the limit. The EcoBoost four, for all its improved efficiency (9.2L/100 km combined and as low as 7.4 on the highway, versus 12.5 combined for the V8, a big difference), doesn’t sacrifice a lot in performance, especially the subjective aspects of it. The car feels quick enough with the six-speed manual, which is more important than hard numbers on a stopwatch, especially in the mid-range where almost all driving is done, when the turbo is all spooled up and the engine is pulling hard. Below about 2,000 rpm, getting off the line, acceleration is less than neck-snapping, though. And at the high end, above 5,000 rpm or so, the engine starts running out of breath a bit as it approaches the paddles behind the steering wheel. Without any of the available the redline. Segment Competitors: Hyundai Elantra Coupe, Honda Civic, Scion tC, VW Golf, Mazda3, Volkswagen Jetta The Skinny: The Forte Koup is the sportiest offering in Kia’s Forte lineup and it looks the part with a low, wide stance and cool LED accents in the headlights. are a great way to burn through the gears. Pros: Incredibly fun to drive thanks to the combination of sporty feeling suspension and a powerful drivetrain. Cons: If you’re a tall person, headroom will most certainly be an issue. The Verdict: The Forte Koup definitely impressed us during out testing as we didn’t expect it to be as fun to drive as it is. he Jaguar XF mid-size luxury sedan makes a return appearance for 2015 with no changes, and remains a handsome, well-appointed luxo-cruiser that won’t break the bank, all things considered. The original XF debuted way back in 2007 and received a facelift five years later, aligning it more closely with the company’s XJ flagship. Features have subsequently been added to produce the car I recently tested: a supercharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine and an “Instinctive” all-wheel drive system in 2013, and a choice of premium sound systems by English audio component manufacturer Meridian in 2014. The styling is quite sporty for this class of vehicle. The contoured headlights are smoked and outlined along the bottom and outer sides with LED daytime running lights; the front bumper has a gaping
like I was always in control. The “Instinctive” part of its name comes from its ability to constantly monitor grip levels. During optimal driving conditions, most of the torque is applied to the rear wheels for a greater feeling of performance. When it’s wet, slushy or icy, up to 50 percent of the torque can be transferred up front. To further increase safety, there is a comprehensive set of driver assist technologies at play including anti-lock brakes, stability control and cornering brake control. With its long list of standard features, the only extra option on my press car was a $350 heated front windscreen. The 2015 Jaguar XF 3.0 AWD starts at $67,500.

As Mercedes-Benz itself puts it, the drive to succeed demands reinvention. The new C-Class is stronger, lighter, safer, smarter, and more powerful. hen one thinks of sport-minded compact sedans from Germany, the BMW M3 is usually the first model that comes to mind for most people, as the German automaker has been busy marketing its highperformance M models for decades.
When driven in anger, the roar of the engine and accompanying exhaust note will reveal to those around you that you are driving a special automobile, but it is also subdued enough to keep you from drawing unwanted attention from the authorities when traipsing through busy urban environments. Handling is exceptional, largely due to the technological marvel that is Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system, which is arguably the best such system in the world. The car tracks straight and true, and understeer has been virtually engineered out of the car as it now has better weight balance. The suspension is a little stiffer than that of a traditional executive class sedan in this category, but this is so that the enthusiast driver will be better able to feel how the car is handling. The ride will not beat you up and is perfectly suitable for daily duty.

Responsible for controlling everything from radio pre-sets to Applications are now controlled using AppLink, which acts as a liclimate settings, it was common to hear drivers complain about aison between the car and software on your phone such as Spotify, non-responsive touch buttons and complicated menus. This time, simplification was the name of the game, and Ford has tried to make commands easier to execute by emulating a smart device’s display and functionality. “We continue to think and behave like a technology company. When we revealed SYNC back in 2007, we really couldn’t have predicted how much mobile device connectivity would influence our lives and our businesses. You have to remember, we introduced SYNC even before Apple introduced the first iPhone,” says Raj Nair, Ford chief technology officer and group vice president, Global Product Development, at an executive briefing in December. “It’s intuitive, easy-to-use, and responds to commands quickly. We watched and learned how people interact with their smartphones and tablets, and we developed an all-new graphical interface that looks and performs just like a smartphone or tablet, but with specific details to make it appropriate for use in a car.” That means functions like phonebook access and navigation are no longer held hostage by tiny touch-sensitive rectangles on the four corners of the screen. They’re replaced by big boxes with big words in the centre that change depending on what menu button you press at the bottom: Audio, Climate, Phone, Nav, Apps or Settings.
Pandora, SiriusXM and others. For iPhone lovers, Siri Eyes-Free capability has been added. One of my favourite new features is the convenient ability to automatically update the SYNC firmware via a Wi-Fi connection.
The screen is bright in the daytime to cut through the sun’s glare, and switches to a darker background automatically at night. When you have something like a map on the screen, users can “pinch” the screen with two fingers to zoom in, which should come naturally to anyone who has used a modern cellphone.
Ford revealed a couple of demo units for people to try out, and I have to admit from a few preliminary pokes and swipes, it already looks to work worlds better than the former setup. The real test will come when SYNC 3 is officially released in new vehicles later this year.

Famously, broadcloth and Mohair were offered on closed cars. John Dillinger wrote Henry Ford to compliment him on the power of the V8, and when he chose getaway cars, the V8 Ford topped his list. In 1931, the 200 cu. in. engine produced only 40 hp, but the 1932 engine’s improvements generated an increase of 10 horsepower. With improved head design, better carburetion and exhaust manifold, and a newly-designed stronger crankshaft, the little Model B engine had 50 horsepower.

Model B engines were also used for racing, and could be modified with pressurized main bearings and drilled rod journals, and some sported a HAL overhead valve conversion or Riley 4-port or 2-port cylinder heads. Fuel pumps on the Model B engine, instead of a gravity system like its predecessor, also yielded a huge improvement in drivability. For the first time in Ford’s history, two models were offered. They were very similar, except that the Model 18 used the new V8 flathead engine and was offered at only a $10 price increase. Of course, the sales of the V8 Model 18 were much higher than the four-cylinder Model B, but with the great the late 1950s. Shortly after Mrs Gibbs’ passing away, the car was sold to depression in full swing, Ford did not make a profit in 1932. Only Nash and a used car dealership in Richmond, B.C., and Stew and Sylvia Braddick bought it in late 1958. General Motors were “in the black” out of all the car manufacturers. The Canadian cars had Canadian serial numbers and imperial gallons on the fuel gauge. The chassis was made by Ford. The bodies were made by Murray Coachworks, with suicide doors versus the five-window, which had conventional doors. The cost of the Deluxe Model B was $650, and an additional $15 for the optional rumble seat. The three- window coupe was only offered as the more expensive “Deluxe” model in 1932.
The price was rumoured to be in the $1,000 range and because of the high price and originality of the car, they did not turn it into a hot rod or race car. The Braddicks operated the Payless Auto Parts store on Hastings for years, and the car was driven sparingly and often seen in the front window of the store. With such a prominent location, it was seen and admired by all sorts of Car Nuts, and finally Stew sold his prized car to Ed Aveling in 1974. RPM Feb / Mar 2015 39

His determined father, Enzo, sought help from the company to which he had once successfully applied for work back in 1919 – the huge Fiat Corporation – and this time he was successful. The transversely mid-engine V6 would be a first for Ferrari. Another first was the name that it would go by. Devoid of any Ferrari logos or script, the new model was named after Enzo’s son and was simply known as the “Dino.”
The Dino by Ferrari
The car was an instant success. It was quick and had responsive handling that separated it from earlier, heavy front-engine V12 models. The first generation Dino was known as the 206GT. They sold like hot cakes, and most remained in Italy. In 1969 the model name was changed to the 246GT and it was fitted with a larger 2,418 cc engine. In 1972, the 246 GTS Spider (lift-out roof section) was introduced. Production of both the GT and the Spider continued until 1974. The total production from 1969 to 1974 amounted to 3,913 GTs and 1,274 Spiders. The Dino caught the attention of young executives. Despite its slightly lower performance figures, it turned out to be a strong sales competitor to the Porsche 911S.
One of the most popular Ferraris of all time, the Pininifarinadesigned, Scaglietti-built Dino laid the foundation for the present generation of Ferraris. f you have owned a vehicle for any length of time and have never encountered the friendly (or perhaps occasionally hostile) services of a tow truck, then you are an anomaly! Many a pristine show car or collector car began the journey back from being a relic on the end of a tow truck hook. The industry has evolved and the older trucks that used hooks, chains and a piece of wood have been replaced with wheel lifts that do not cause any damage to the bodywork. The ultimate tow is a flatdeck truck. During the mid-1970s, I drove a ground-hugging modified MG Midget with a front spoiler that would be ripped off in seconds by a conventional tow-truck. The only tow-truck in Vancouver that could tow me was operated by BCAA. It featured an arrangement of two bars that were placed ahead and behind the front tires and were attached to straps making a cradle that was lifted up by the tow boom that protruded over the hood. Ernest Holmes was the owner of the only automotive repair shop in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1915, John Wiley was driving his Model “T” Ford on a trip that ended in a mishap with the “Tin Lizzie” ending up in the Chickamauga Creek. Holmes and six men to the rescue! Using a car and a rope, it turned into an event that would take almost the entire day. As Holmes’ repair business flourished, he explored how he could move disabled vehicles to his shop, to avoid the unpleasant task of chilly roadside repairs. In 1916, he came up with the solution. Holmes modified a Cadillac by attaching a triangulated structure equipped with a manually cranked system, made up of pulleys and steel cables, with a hook attached to the end. He patented his invention and called it the Holmes 485 wrecker, named after the cost, which was $485.

The Holmes Company grew into North America’s largest tow truck manufacturer. Ernest Holmes died in 1943. His son Ernest Holmes Jr. continued running the company until he retired in 1973. The International Towing and Recovery Museum in Chattanooga is located a few blocks from the original Holmes repair shop. On display is the oldest known surviving tow truck in North America. It is a 1916 Locomobile, built at a hefty 1916 cost of $6,000.
